The low-grade talc deposits in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, are associated with a mafic-ultramafic rock complex that is part of a widely distributed schist and gneiss group. These rocks form a synform structure overlying Inner Piedmont lithology. Paragenetic sequence of the Tallapoosa talc is interpreted as enstatite-anthophyllitetalc. Talc occurs as massive boulders formed by the alteration of enstatite-anthophyllite and as finely disseminated discrete particles in the enclosing saprolite matrix. Weathered rock reaches depths as great as 60 feet. The quality and quantity of the talc, however, are variable. Mineral analyses of the talc-bearing samples, by petrographic grain count, indicate a talc content of 16 to 26 percent. Most of the talc occurs as plates or scales that are moderately stained with limonite. Fibrous talc also occurs in the deposits and is often mistaken for anthophyllite asbestos which is intimately associated with the talc. The size, shape, and occurrence of the talc deposits precludes any method of min¬ing other than open-cut. A small-scale mining operation began in the district in 1969. Potential capacity of the operation is 5, 000 tons per year. Inferred reserves, based on field investigations, are placed at approximately 8 million tons. During August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook sampling and measuring of the Kennedy zinc tailing pile near Hazel Green, Lafayette County, south-western Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of this lead-and zinc-producing area at a time when it was extremely important to increase the production of metals for the Nation's War program. The tailing pile was the residue from old jigging plants that treated ore from the Kennedy mine, one of the oldest and. largest mines in the district. Because retreatment of tailing by modern milling methods was proving economically successful at other sites in the southwestern Wisconsin field, the Bureau?s investigation was designed to assist the potential operators in evaluating the feasibility of a retreatment operation at this site. The study involved measurement of the tailing pile and sampling by means of auger to determine the average metal content within the narrowest possible limits. A total of 46 auger holes ranging in depths up to 40 feet and aggregating 886.5 feet of bore were drilled in the tailing pile, and weighted samples from each hole were analyzed and averaged to determine the zinc and iron content of the tailing.

The importance of Somerset County, Pa., as a coal producer is due in large measure to the presence reserves of low-volatile bituminous coals. Although many coal beds of minable thickness are present, the important reserves are to be found in those beds underlying the Pittsburgh bed. The Kittenning beds and Freeport beds, which are responsible for the bulk of the present coal production in Somerset County and contain the largest reserves to meet future coal requirements, are usually thin and entirely free from impurities. The Pittsburgh bed, which has been such an important coal deposit in the coal areas immediately west and south of Somerset County, is of secondary importance in this county. Although generally rather friable, Somerset County coals have enjoyed wide receptability as excellent coals and to some extent have been utilized in the metallurgical market.

Roasting of refractory gold ores has been a commercial process for many years. Improvements in design of fluidised bed roasting technologies and low capital and operating costs compared with other refractory treatment processes can potentially make roasting a viable option.However, gold extraction from roasted ores carried out on laboratory scale equipment often invariably yields lower recoveries than other processes such as bio-oxidation or pressure oxidation. Non-optimal laboratory roasting conditions can incorrectly write roasting off as a process option.Low gold recoveries from the cyanidation of calcine products from roasting can often be attributed to roasting conditions not favouring gold liberation and agglomeration processes, particularly if lockups of elements such as arsenic are being pursued for environmental reasons.This paper reviews the conditions favoured for gold agglomeration and accessibility of gold to cyanide, test conditions to achieve gold liberation and agglomeration on laboratory scale and designs that incorporate staged decomposition and roasting to make roasting a more commercial option.CITATION:Aylmore, M G and de Klerk, L W, 2013. Posteriormente, se realiza la descripción de la geología en el área del Core Shack, adonde llegan las cajas de testigos. La información de las leyes está compuesta por análisis de plasma de acoplamiento inductivo (ICP), espectroscopia de absorción atómica (AA) y análisis volumétrico (Volumetría). El trabajo de recopilación de información de los sondajes por parte del equipo de perforación era muy laborioso y rutinario. Para evitar demoras y errores en la visualización y análisis de la trayectoria de los sondajes, se implementó la automatización de la trayectoria de la perforación en tiempo real.

By offering savings in space and capital cost compared to ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, horizontally mounted jet fans are commonly used worldwide to ventilate vehicular tunnels. They discharge high-velocity jets to transfer momentum to the surrounding airstream to induce longitudinal flow in the same direction as the jet. Vertically mounted jet fans installed in exhaust shafts have been successfully used to ventilate a large passenger rail overbuild in New York City. A comparison of shaft dimensions, vertical placement of the jet fans and measured shaft airflows is presented to evaluate optimum jet fan configurations. Measured shaft airflows are compared to airflows predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a three-dimensional model of the overbuild.

Introduction A computer program was developed for analyzing drum-type hoists before modifying an existing system or designing a new one. Its use permits the preliminary evaluation of a system before seeking technical assistance from mine hoist designers and manufacturers. The user-friendly program accepts a variety of data and analyzes hoisting systems for any balance state. The program can be used to calculate skip capacity to yield a desired production rate, solve for drum face width, select a permissible wire rope, estimate total horsepower of the hoist plant, and estimate annual power cost. Whether required for a large mining complex or for a relatively small operation, a hoisting system must be carefully designed to ensure the efficient, reliable, and safe flow of material. Because shaft sinking and hoist installation can total between 2.5% and 3% of the cost of opening a deep mine, proper hoist selection is critical. Today's mining engineer has at his disposal the most powerful design and analytical aid ever, the microcomputer. There is, unfortunately, limited software for the study of hoisting systems, unlike that for other materials handling equipment (Manula and Albert, 1980; Prelaz et al., 1964; Bucklen, 1969; Thompson, 1985). HOIST reduces a time-consuming set of calculations to a concise package of interrelated subprograms. A literature review revealed no common-user programs to analyze hoisting systems, although at least four major hoist designers/manufacturers/installers have their own in-house programs. To provide a tool with which the mining engineer could preliminarily analyze a materials hoisting system or could check the calculations of a hoist contractor, a computer program was developed. HOIST was written in BASIC for the IBM-PC for ease of program adaptation and to encourage field use on compatible systems. Details of program development are omitted, since the basic principles of hoisting analyses are relatively straightforward, simple, and readily accepted (Harmon, 1973; Nordberg, n.d.; Adler, 1957). Program features, intended usage, and benefits of the computerized solution are emphasized over theory development and mathematical rigor. Background The mine hoist system that is selected and installed at a mine is the "lifeline" of that mine, with installations lasting 20 years or more. Thorough study is warranted to ensure that productivity demands are met at a minimum cost per ton. The increased cost of a large, powerful, high-speed hoist must be offset by increased production to justify its selection. To optimize this tradeoff, an extensive hoisting analysis should be performed. The analyses to properly size the skip (or cage), the drum, and the hoist drive are conducive to computerization, permitting rapid evaluation of changeable operating and design parameters, such as velocity, acceleration, state of balance, and productivity demand. The program is particularly useful in conducting sensitivity trials, such as investigation into the effect of change of productivity on skip capacity and on horsepower of the hoist drive. HOIST is currently limited to the study of drum-type hoists with cylindrical drum(s). However, only minor changes to the program would permit analysis of friction hoists and conical drum configurations. Model development and testing The program is based on accepted equations and physical relationships. Examples of manual calculations formed the basis for decision points and program branching. Data is input in the order that it would be needed if the problems were solved manually. The choices are arranged likewise. HOIST was developed in sections, with manual solutions performed to check program logic. The testing became more rigorous as sections were completed. Output from one section becomes input for following sections, as appropriate. The simplified flow diagram of HOIST is given in Fig. 1.

"The project consists of a 33-story building with two levels of below-grade parking across the entire building footprint. Timely and cooperative teamwork among the owner/developer, geotechnical engineer, testing agency, structural engineer, construction manager, and pile-driving contractor resulted in an efficient, costeffective, high-capacity driven-pile foundation on a constrained urban site with significantly variable subsurface conditions. Design objectives included utilizing the highest allowable pile loads reasonably installed from a drivability perspective, using readily available equipment. A pre-production test program was performed on 16-inch-diameter (406-mm-diameter) steel pipe piles, driven closed-ended and subsequently filled with concrete. The test program included dynamic monitoring of 10 piles during installation, and of select piles during long-term restrike testing with a drop hammer, with one instrumented static load test. CAPWAP® analyses were performed on both end-of-initial-drive and beginning-of-restrike dynamic test records. The site exhibited significant soil set-up, even after relatively short wait times. Testprogram objectives included characterizing set-up profiles. A design set-up profile was used to develop depth-variable driving criteria for both 500- and 600-kip (2,224- and 2,669-kN) allowable load piles. Test program results permitted more-accurate reduced capacities to be assigned to damaged piles, and to piles which experienced practical refusal. These more-accurate assigned reduced capacities decreased the number of replacement piles required by 50 percent, saving both time and cost.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe project, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA consists of a 33-story mixed-use residential building with two levels of below-grade parking across the entire site footprint. Column service loads range from 1,400 to 4,200 kips (6,228 to 18,683 kN). The project is located immediately adjacent to an existing two-story masonry retail building with a partial basement, supported on shallow spread-footing foundations.Subsurface Conditions – The generalized soil conditions are presented in Fig. 1. Site grades were relatively level, with a ground-surface elevation of approximately +53 feet (16 m), Milwaukee City Datum (“MCD”). Fill material from previous construction was encountered to approximate Elev. +33 feet (10 m). Below the fill, medium dense silty sand, to silt with sand, was encountered to approximate Elev. +23 feet (7 m). Underlying deposits consisted of lean clay, with undrained shear strengths ranging from approximately 1,000 to 3,000 pounds per square foot (psf) (48 to 144 kPa). Silty sand, to silt with sand, exhibiting increasing relative density with depth, was found below the lean clay to approximate Elev. -92 feet (-28 m), where hard lean clay (glacial till) with undrained shear strengths in excess of 5,000 psf (239 kPa) was encountered. Borings did not extend below Elev. -103 feet (-31 m)."

San Rafael es la única mina de estaño en el Perú y la segunda en la producción mundial después de P. T. Timah de Indonesia. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la geología y exploración de dicha minera. San Rafael está ubicada en el nevado Quenamari de la Cordillera de Carabaya, Puno, cuyas vetas fueron exploradas en los niveles superiores, principalmente por Lampa Mining en 1950 y por Minsur SL, de la Casa Grace, en 1966. Posteriormente Minsur adquirió la minera donde se intensificaron los estudios geológicos en todo el nevado Quenamari, y las exploraciones y desarrollos para encontrar estaño en el intrusivo. La edad de la mineralización comprende cuatro de etapas de mineralización: a) cuarzo-turmalina, b) casiterita botrioidalcuarzo- clorita, la principal c) chalcopirita-estaño aguja-cuarzo-clorita y d) cuarzo-calcita. El estaño como casiterita botrioidal es abundante en los niveles inferiores, mientras que la casiterita en agujas o estaño fino está asociada mayormente con la chalcopirita en los niveles superiores.

"The mode of occurrence of sulfur and mercury in 57 Chinese bituminous coals have been examined using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Zeeman atomic absorption mercury spectrometer. Mercury levels in coal are related to the geographic location of the coals and types of the coals. A synthesis of result indicated that most likely occurrence modes of mercury in high-sulfur and high-mercury coals are in solid solution in pyrite. Our study from 57 coal samples showed that most values of mercury concentration in coal varied from 100 to 1000 ng/g with an average of approximately 500ng/g, and mathematical model about correlation between mercury and sulfur was gained by mathematical statistics. This is apparent that mercury and sulfur vary concomitantly from coal data (table 3) , the high correlation between them in all coals at confidence of 95% ( a=0.05 ) .1. INTRODUCTIONThere contained about one trillion ton abundant coal resources in China. As a leading level of proven coal reserves in the world, the coals mainly distributed in north China and northwest China, especially in Shanxi, Guizhou, Shanxi provinces and Inner-Mongolia autonomous region. At the same time, China has the largest production and consumption of coal, and has the output of coal nearly accounted for 37 percent of the world's production. Coal-fired power plants are the major source of energy generation in China, and the proportion of coal combustion is up to 75 percent in the total energy configuration. Therefore, the mercury pollution caused by coal-fired has become a topic of wide-spread discussions since 1990. The contamination of mercury of human activities accounted for 10 to 30 percent [1], and the mercury emissions of coal-fired flue gas has made the greatest contribution to the pollution of atmosphere[2] In the past 30 years, the global increasing concentration of mercury pollutant in atmosphere maybe result from coal combustion[2]. The mercury emissions caused by coal-burning has become the main reason of China's mercury pollution, and the characteristics of mercury pollution is closely related to China's energy configuration, additionally, the features of mercury pollution have changed from the point pollution in 1970's to diffused pollution today[3]. Mercury can be found in various types of coals, and it is evaporated into gas phase during the combustion process."

A novel process, which includes hydrochloric acid leaching, iron powder cementation, sulphide precipitation and spray pyrolysis, was proposed to treat iron concentrate recovered from zinc kiln slag for comprehensive utilization. Treated by two-stage hydrochloric acid leaching, the leaching extents of Ag, Pb, Cu, Fe and Zn are 96.78%, 95.14%, 97.72%, 94.51% and 87.74%, respectively. More than 99% Cu and Ag are recovered from the leach liquor when iron powder is 25% higher than the stoichiometric requirement. More than 96% Pb and Zn is removed with three times of theoretical consumption of FeS, and the concentration of impurities of the final solution is less than 500 mg/L. Fe2O3 powder, which is spherical with a mean size of 12 μm and purity of 99%, is prepared with final solution at 700 °C. In this process, not only the metal values can be recovered effectively, but also the iron resources of zinc kiln slag can be converted into high purity Fe2O3, thus, the comprehensive utilization of iron concentrate recovered from zinc kiln slag can be realized.

The Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine was acquired by Newmont in August 2015. The high grade flotation mill project was commissioned in February 2014. The mill to date has been throughput limited due to mechanical and design issues. In order to create the most value from a throughput limited plant a campaign to provide timely ore characterization was undertaken. A diagnostic leach methodology was developed to determine gold associations by ore type. The resulting associations were then used to characterize feed blend; gold losses and optimize gold production. The diagnostic methodology is presented along with discussion on flotation implications.

"The powerhouse for the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project is being constructed at the toe of the existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Red Rock Dam immediately adjacent to the existing stilling basin retaining wall. The powerhouse excavation extends though overburden and 40 feet into rock. Prior to rock excavation, a grouting was performed around the excavation for the purpose of increasing the strength of zones of fractured rock. For the majority of the perimeter, the rock was fairly tight and grout takes were relatively low. However, for a 160 foot extent along the landside of the excavation, extensive grouting was required to treat a two to five foot thick zone characterized by artesian flows from grout holes on the order of 20 gallons per minute (gpm) or higher from a voided zone in rock that was partially filled with sand, clay, and rock fragments. This paper discusses the treatment measures used to fill and improve the strength of this zone, which ultimately entailed a combination of thick cement grout and polyurethane grout, holes spaced as close as 18 inches on-center, and two additional rows of grout holes.IntroductionThe Red Rock Hydroelectric Project (Project) is currently under construction at the existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Red Rock Dam on the Des Moines River near Pella, Iowa. At peak generation, the Project will generate up to 55 MW with an average annual energy output of 178 gigawatt-hours.The powerhouse for the Project will be located at the toe of the existing dam immediately adjacent to the existing stilling basin retaining wall. The powerhouse excavation extends up to a depth of 40 feet into rock through the St. Louis Limestone and terminates in the Warsaw Limestone. Prior to rock excavation, grouting was performed around the excavation for the purpose of improving the strength of zones of fractured rock. An auxiliary benefit of the grouting was reducing seepage into the excavation. Grouting began on July 20, 2015 and ultimately concluded on September 26, 2015.Drilling and grouting occurred as planned on the riverside (southwest) of the excavation along the cellular cofferdam and stilling basin wall (grout holes P-1 through S-13) and on the upstream (northwest) side of the excavation along the secant pile excavation support wall (grout holes P-14 through S-19) (refer to Fig. 1). The rock in these areas was generally tight with relatively low grout takes. However, on the landside (northeast) of the excavation (grout holes P-20 through P-28), partially infilled voids and artesian flows were encountered during drilling generally between depths of about 28 to 40 feet."

In China’s Inner Mongolia Tuquan County, 1.4 billion tons of reserves of serpentine deposits were found. Because serpentine belongs to magnesium silicate, there is no good reducing agent to reduce magnesium. In the local there is also a large reserves of high-aluminum bituminous coal for thermal power, power plants each year produce a large number of high-aluminum fly ash. The aluminum-silicon alloys obtained from this high-aluminum fly ash as the raw material by carbothermal reduction method can reduce the magnesium from the serpentine. In this paper, first, the feasibility of producing aluminum-silicon alloys by carbothermal reduction of high-alumina fly ash was studied, the hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloys were obtained; and then the investigation on aluminum-silicon alloy as a reducing agent to reduce of metal magnesium from serpentine was carried out. According to the previous investigation, the optimized technical process for the extraction of metal magnesium from serpentine was proposed.

Grand Junction, Colorado’s legacy with uranium mining and milling serves as a model attracting international interest. Access to water and central location to carnotite ore containing uranium and vanadium resulted in the World War II military creating a site in Grand Junction for developing extraction techniques; subsequently, several commercial mill sites were built in the area. Uranium mills produced ore into the 1970’s as well as tonnes of radioactive waste tailings. Tailings contain radium that emits radon gas. Despite the radiation hazard, sandy tailings were added to concrete and became incorporated into roads, schools, businesses and homes. Clean up of sites containing tailings and mill sites began in the 1970’s involving city, state, and federal officials. The Climax mill site had become an auto junk yard mixed with mill tailings. A new disposal site was built out of town and away from the river in the 1990’s. After Climax mill tailings were removed to the disposal site, the land sat vacant for two decades until citizens and city officials developed a masterplan for the riverfront property. The Las Colonias river park is being built in stages including an amphitheater, gardens, businesses and parks. One of the biggest obstacles to site remediation and reuse was overcoming public outrage, fear, and lack of trust which made funding sources scarce.

"In this study, Mo containing Fe-based alloys, such as Fe-Ni-Cr-Mo, were synthesized using a mixture of Fe203-NiO-Cr203-Mo03 powders reducing with Al powders by metallothermic process which is a high energy efficient, fast and low-cost production technique for synthesis of cast alloys and advanced ceramics. Detailed thermochemical studies were simulated by using FactSage 6.2 Thermochemical software in order to calculate adiabatic temperature of the reactions and effects of initial molar composition on the final products. In the metallothermic processes, effects of stoichiometric Al addition and addition of the oxide powders (Alz03, Si02, CaO, MgO) on the metal recovery and compositions of final alloys were carried out. Final products were characterized by using chemical analysis (AAS), XRD, XRF and SEM/EDS techniques.IntroductionSelf Propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) has significant advantages compared to the high technology furnace applications, such as very short processing time, simple operation, low energy requirement and low cost [l, 2]. In a SHS process, the ignition starts the combustion and propagates throughout the reactant mixture yielding the desired product. However, the disadvantages of the process such as inhomogeneous or unreacted products due to undesirable reaction rates needs to be overcome by changing some parameters such as ignition temperature, particle size, additive, atmosphere etc. [3, 4]. This work aims to establish a scientific and engineering background in the production of some cast Fe based alloys (Fe-Ni-Cr-Mo) which are used as surface coatings, wear-corrosion-oxidation resistive applications via SHS (Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis) metallurgy which is attractive process technique regarding fast and low-cost production ability of cast alloys."

"In order to investigate the fractal feature of coalmine deep rock fragments under impact loads, variable cross-section split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus, 50 mm in diameter, was adopted to conduct impact compressive test for rock specimens from -962m deep coalmine. Various impact pressures, such as 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2MPa, were selected to implement different loading rates. Sieving statistical analyses were conducted for rock fragments after being impacted, and the particle size distribution of broken rock in various loading rates were calculated with the fractal method and then the corresponding fractal dimension was obtained. Test results shows that there is a good self-similarity and fractal feature in fragments distribution of deep coalmine sandstone under impact loads. The fractal dimension of fragments is between 1.9 and 2.7. The research also indicates that there is an approximate power relationship between dynamic compressive strength and fractal dimension, and a strength power relationship between fractal dimension and average strain rate. Moreover, there is a linear relationship between fractal dimension and specimen absorbed energy. The rock fractured process can be quantitatively described through fractal dimension, which can reflect the deep rock broken degree and is an ideal index to evaluate the distribution of rock fragments.INTRODUCTIONBroken rock is one of the most basic processes in mining operations, rock fragmentation has always been an important index to evaluate rock breaking effect (Xu & Yu, 1984). Macroscopic fragmentation of rock material is the final results of continuous development, expansion, gathering and cutthrough of internal micro-cracks. This process, developing from microscopic damage to macroscopic fragmentation, is an energy dissipation process and shows fractal characteristics (Xie, 1993). Turcotte (1986) has conducted statistical analyses of fragmentation for different kinds of geological materials under various broken conditions, and arrived at the conclusion that fragmentation distribution is a fractal."

Drilling and Blasting are core operations in a mine. They impact all the downstream operations and their costs. Digital technologies exist for optimizing both drilling and blasting for many years. However, these technologies have largely been non-integrated and non-real time. This gap results in sub-optimal drilling and blasting operations. Also traditionally focus has been on optimizing individual areas (drilling or blasting and subsequent subsystems). Industry has largely lacked real time or near real time integration available to the user in the field and in the office. In this paper, a case study is presented of a large global cement company using a cloud and mobile based platform across 17 of their mines consistently over a large number of users over a period of over two years. The use of a blast platform is detailed which include blast designs, blast data collection and the trends in terms of results. On the drilling side, this paper describes the ability to capture drill logs, plod reports etc. Also actual drilling information in the field using a mobile device and its real time synchronization with a blast designer to provide visibility of expected fragmentation and vibration levels based on the drilling done. Key parameters such as hole ID, design depth, actual depth, hole status, designed and actual charge (length and weight), designed and actual stemming length are captured. The case study also highlights the challenges in technology adoption and implementation in mining in drilling and blasting. Making drill and blast results predictable should be the desired direction. Also digital technology tool adoption has been seen at the biggest miners – not so much in mid-sized miners or drill and blast contractors. Benefits of this platform on the safety side are highlighted including predictions on safety parameters and appropriate alerts if blast safety parameter / clearance zones are not met. The safety parameters are made available visually to the operator using maps and / or on drone images. Future possible improvements in the digital technology platform at the site are also highlighted including greater possible automation.

This paper will attempt to show how a metallurgical problem at one California quicksilver mine was solved, and how the solution was applied successfully at another mine. The pronouns "we" and "our," as used below, refer '0 the Bradley 'lining Co. of San Francisco. The term "concurrent firing" for the purpose of this paper can be defined as feeding and firing a a kiln at the same end—that is, of course, the upper end' This is as opposed to "countercurrent firing," the orthodox method, in which a kiln is fed at the upper and fired at the lower end. The terms "quicksilver" and "mercury" are used interchangeably. Early References The earliest work on nonferrous metallurgy, we believe, was The Pirotechnia of Vannocio Biringuccio,l its first edition having been printed in Italy in 1540. Quoting from its chapter entitled "Concerning Quicksilver and Its Ore": Quicksilver ... is one of the gods and has divine strength in itself, and also, to the annoyance of the alchemists, it is winged. Hence, when it sees that it is in gravest danger, it loosens itself from . . . every bond . . . and fies away into the heavens, escaping from the hands of those who crucify it. Almost laughing, it leaves all its adversaries mocked and scorned, with their phials and filters empty . . . How thorough a job, under certain conditions, it can do of mocking its adversaries and leaving their phials and filters empty, was found out four centuries later at the Sulphur Bank mine, on the east shore of Clear Lake, in Lake county, California, The other mine mentioned in the title is the Reed, in Yolo County, California, 35 miles by road southeast of Sulphur Bank, Reed and Sulphur Bank ranked respectively Nth and seventh in U. S. production in 1943. The earliest direct reference we can find to furnacing troubles at these mines was by Thomas Egleston in 1890.2 Speaking of Sulphur Bank, Egleston says: of there is more sulphur than cinnabar in the ore, which is a detriment to both . . . making the sulphur impure, and rendering the cinnabar difficult to work on account of the soot. In some of the early . . . furnaces the accumulation of soot from the excess of sulphur has been known to penetrate as far as the fan blower at the end of the . . . condensers, and completely prevent its revolution. In order to get rid of the inconvenience of this accumulation . . . , as well as to get a commercial value from the sulphur, it (the sulphur) is now separated by steam and sold. It is claimed that the sulphur alone pays all the expenses of ... the mine.
