Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.

Gravity separators are commonly used in multistage cleaning and scavenging circuits to improve the quality and/or recovery of the final concentrate. Unfortunately, studies suggest that many industrial plants are poorly designed in terms of equipment layout. This shortcoming can often be attributed to a failure by engineers to make use of fundamental process engineering tools for circuit design. One of the most important of these is linear circuit analysis. This powerful tool makes it possible to mathematically compare the relative efficiencies of circuit configurations in advance of experimental testing. This article provides a basic review of the linear circuit analysis concept and discusses some of the key insights it provides for the layout of multistage circuits. An industrial case study is provided to show the tremendous impact that this process engineering tool can have on the design of multistage spiral circuits in a heavy mineral wet plant.

A brief review of Computational Thermodynamics software concerning the modeling and prediction of reactions involving metals, slags and fluxes is presented. Their application for various steelmaking treatments is discussed. Examples concern phosphorus removal in BOF and EAF, ladle steel desulfurization, and specific treatments for inclusions control in semi-killed or Al-killed carbon and stainless steels.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. Production of tin and tungsten concentrates began in 1932, and to date more than 550,000 tons of ore have been mined for a recovery of 8,856 tons of tin concentrates, and 3,056 tons of wolfram concentrates, valued at approximately £6,500,000.This paper reports part of an investigation undertaken by the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of C.S.I.R.O. to study the mineral composition of the ore in relation to the apparent failure of cassiterite and wolfram mineralization to extend below the present working limits of the mine, and was first issued as Mineragrapnic Report No. 639.GENERAL GEOLOGY:The deposit consists of a series of quartz veins in a northsouth trending sheeted zone, transecting folded slates and...

En el Perú, el cobalto @>0.1% de concentración se da principalmente en sistemas hidrotermales, particularmente en yacimientos de tipo IOCG y en vetas altoandinas de Zn-Pb-(Ag)-Ni. El primer tipo se presenta en al menos dos segmentos del cinturón de yacimientos IOCG de la costa, entre Lima e Ica. El segundo ha sido documentado principalmente en la Cordillera Oriental, entre Huánuco y Puno. Se han identificado 29 sistemas de vetas y mantos significativos entre ambos tipos. En las vetas, estos ocupan porciones restringidas de 100-500 m de largo, 50-200 m de alto y 0.2-1.5 m de potencia, sugiriendo masas prospectivas del orden de 0.2-0.5 Mt por cada sistema.

The CSO 52 Storage Tunnel and Pump Station project consists of 4,700 ft of hard rock tunnel, 2 intakes, and a 4 MGD wet pit pump station. During the geotechnical investigation, it was determined that the host geology contained abundant suldes. The purpose of this paper is to detail the investigation and subsequent determination that acid producing materials would affect the project during construction as well as long-term exposure of tunnel lining and permanent components during the operational life cycle of the tunnel and pump station. Details regarding the interaction between tunnel components and the acid producing material are also provided.

After half a million meters drilled with Wassara we are now confident that ITH hammers powered with simple water will become an established product for production drilling. Today four drill rigs in LKAB Malmberget equipped with Wassara drill about 25 000 m per month of 4 1/2" holes. In Kidd Creek, Canada, Was sara is used for production drilling in stopes with good results. The first Wassara 6" hammer has drilled a 36 meter long, completely straight horizontal cut hole for drifting in the LKAB Malmberget Mine. Main advantages are about doubled penetration rate, very good air quality and improved hole cleaning which facilitates stabilized drilling. Disadvantages are resistance to new technology and, in some cases, the increased use of water.

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

Attempting to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic" and "macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also untlerly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all sepregation effects. Undercooling and Nuclei Formation It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus temperature. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number illcreases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. Temperature Gradients and Heat Dissipation during Freezing Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period. A galvanic cell, using liquid MgCl2 or MgC12-CaC12 mixtures as the electrolyte, has been used to determine activities in Mg-A1 liquid alloys between 700' and 880°C. The incovporation of a chlorine electrode in the cell also allowed measurements to be made of the standard free energy of formation of MgCl2(l). The results are shown to be in good agreement with thermo-chetrlical values from the literature, and this is taken as evidence that the small, known solubility of magnesium in iMgCl2 introduces no significant error in galcanic cell measurements. Within experimental error, the activity coefficients and relative partial molar enthalpies at 800°C are shown to be represented by the following "subregular" solution equations: logy~~ =-0.68(1 -xMgj3 log yAL =-1.02(1 - XMf + 0.68(1 - XMf H.M = -4400(1 - %)3 / cal Mg 7Ag' HZ =-6600(1 - xA1)' + 4400(1 - XMf cal SCHNEIDER and toll' have used a transpiration technique to measure the vapor pressures of magnesium over Mg-A1 alloys between 544" and 594°C. amsstad,' however, has since suggested that the extrapolation to zero flow rate, used by these authors in interpreting their apparent pressure vs flow rate data, gives unreliable results. Rogers, Tomlinson, and Richardson,3 in interpreting the results of solution equilibria between Mg-A1 alloys and liquid MgC12, also considered the measurements of Schneider and Stoll to be unreliable and preferred to derive activities for the alloys from the earlier boiling point determinations of ~eit~ebel~ and the partial molar heats recommended by Kubaschewski and ~atterall.~ These latter heats were based substantially on the early calorimetric work of Kawa-kami but, unfortunately, his work on other systems has sometimes been found to be inaccurate.7 Rogers et al., in the above-mentioned paper,3 tentatively concluded that the most likely species responsible for the limited solubility (0.3 mole pct at 800°C) of magnesium in MgC12 were Mg° (neutral) and Mg2++. Two more recent studies8,9 have supported Mg2++ as the soluble species. In the present study, activities in Mg-A1 alloys have been determined by means of a galvanic cell involving liquid MgCl2 or MgC12CaCl, mixtures as the electrolyte. Since the reactive nature of magnesium precluded simple Faraday yield experiments, a chlorine electrode was incorporated in the cell in order that the performance of the cell could be checked by measurements of the heat and free energy of formation of MgC12. This procedure was considered necessary since it has been suggested1' that the solubility of a metal in a molten salt might introduce electronic conductivity; also, previous determinations of the standard electrode potential for MgC12 differed by as much as 70 mv11-13 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. Analyses of the materials used in preparing the alloys and the electrolyte mixtures are presented in Table I. The alloys were prepared by induction melting weighed amounts of the metals in a graphite crucible held under an argon atmosphere. Pure anhydrous magnesium chloride was prepared by heating the mixture MgCl, . 6H20 +NH4C1(1:1) to 650°C, followed by melting under dry argon. The melting point of the dry MgC12 was found by differential thermal analysis to be 714.8oC, which compares well with the accepted value of 714C.14 This agreement was taken to be an indication of the high purity of the dried salt. In several investigations the correlation has been studied between the fuel consumption and the reducibility of the charged material in the zone of indirect reduction in the blast furnace (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). It has been found that increased reducibility allows greater gas utilization which accordingly lowers the fuel consumption. In direct reduction units this relation has not yet been fully established partly owing to the lack of accurate test methods and experience with different materials as regards reducibility. However, since the production rate in a direct reduction unit is closely related to the time required to reach high degrees of reduction, the reducibility must be regarded as one of the most important properties of the material.

An overland belt conveyor system is installed for only one reason to save money. It must pay its way on a ton-mile basis over a stated period of time, and do so in competition with other forms of transportation. Such a system with its economies has recently been installed at Simco-Peabody's mine near Coshocton, Ohio by Link-Belt Company. Three miles in length, this system carries coal from open pit and underground mining facilities to the Conesville Power Plant of Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company. The coal was formerly trucked from the mine direct to the power plant; but over the years the mining operations have moved progressively farther and farther from the plant, making the over-the-road hauling distance correspondingly greater. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. The majority of the coal is recovered by conventional strip mining. Some underground mining` is performed by the high wall method.

The stability of mine roofs in permafrost zones is determined mainly by temperature and ice content. The deformation resulting from creep and temperature dependent physical properties of frozen rockmass is the dominant component of total deformation. Roof bolts can consolidate the roof and control its deformation. In this paper, a finite element model for analysis of the effects of roof bolting in a frozen rockmass is presented. The model includes the variables normally encountered when analyzing the effects of roof bolting in rocks. It also accounts for properties unique to frozen rockmass, creep deformation and the change in Young's modulus with changing temperature. The model shows that, as bolt spacing decreases, there is a trade-off between increased roof stability from increased mechanical support and decreased stability from increased conduction of heat into the frozen roof. This result was expected, and shows that, for a given set of rockmass conditions, including ice content, temperature, particle size, etc., there is an optimum bolt length and bolt density for minimum roof deflection.

During the tapping of liquid steel from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), some slag is carried over into the ladle. High levels of FeO and MnO in slag carryover increase the oxygen activity in steel melt leading to oxide inclusion formation during the ladle treatment. The demand on cleaner steels requires minimization of carryover slag. In this work, the effect of EAF slag carryover on ladle slag-steel equilibrium calculations for a hot working tool steel was studied. Steel and slag sampling were done in Uddeholm Tooling AB in Sweden. XRF and OES techniques were used to determine chemical composition of samples. The quantity of slag carryover was calculated based on a mass balance followed by thermodynamic calculations on metal-slag equilibrium using Thermo-Calc software. The agreement between predictions and experimentally determined compositions was good. This leads to the development of a prediction method for optimizing the production of other tool steel grades.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

A short course, held during the SME Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ in February, focused on software for surface and underground mine modeling. The objectives of the short course were to review techniques for surface and underground mine planning. Mine planning software vendors were invited to demonstrate how their software runs, given a standard data set. Six vendors of mining-specific software participated in the workshop. They were Exploration Computer Services (MINEX 3D), GEMCOM Services, Inc. (PC-MINE), KJRA Systems (VULCAN), Mine Development Associates (SURPAC), Micromine and MINEsoft (TECHBASE). Data set A data set was created to challenge the capabilities of each vendor's software. The criteria used for the data set selection were: • a minimum of 300 drill holes; • the data must include topography, drill hole survey, assay and formation contacts; • the deposit was multimetallic; and • there was the potential to be mined by surface and underground methods. The data set used was an actual, complex copper ore body with a small amount of gold. The ore body was close enough to the surface to be mined by surface techniques. Part of it, though, was also amenable to underground mining. To further complicate the problem, a river ran across the area of the ore body. This presented mine planners with the problem of either moving the river or mining around or below it. The ore body had not been mined, so no data was available for the tons and grade actually produced. Data for the mine planning problem was distributed to each vendor about two months before the short course. They had the opportunity to load the data into their systems, build an ore body model and perform preliminary work. During the first day of the workshop, the vendors received problems concerning the ore body. They went to work on their machines, attempting to show short course participants how their software could help solve the problem.

In considering the cost of rock excavation, but little attention has been given to the economical handling and breaking up of boulders. Very few records seem to have been kept as to the cost of such work, and although it is difficult for this reason, to set a fair price for breaking up and handling boulders of various sizes, yet the cost of this detail work enters very materially into the cost of solid rock excavation. The subject is worthy of close and prolonged study.
