The monoclinic to tetragonal inversion of zirconium dioxide was studied by single-crystal X-ray methods, high-temperature X-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis. The unusual features of the inversion, such as no definite transition Lperature, hysteresis, and athermal kinetics, were confirmed for powders who mean crystallite size was greater than 1,000 A. Samples of mean crystallite size below 1,000 A displayed classical kinetics, obeying a logarithmic rate law. A detailed mechanism based on Ubbelohde's theory of continuous phase transformations was proposed which is consistent with all the experimental facts.

Development work in mines of St. Joseph Lead Co., Southeast Missouri, using trackless loading equipment shows definite advantages: Speed of cleaning, ability to work on steep grades and sharp crosscuts, good later tracking conditions, and possibility of wasting rock in old abandoned stopes. THE Desloge mine is one of a group of mines owned by the St. Joseph Lead Co., in the so-called Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. It has been operating approximately 40 years producing a daily tonnage ranging from 1600 to 3800, depending on various factors. On an average, the present mine is 300 ft deep with an extreme extent of 2.7 miles by 1.7 miles. Most of the present mining is in the lower horizons of the Bonne Terre dolomite, a fairly soft rock requiring no support except occasional channel iron and roof pins. Due to the contour of the underlying sandstone and porphyry, some development work has been through short stretches of these different formations. In some areas the lower part of the dolomite is quite sandy and generally is considered abrasive. Sizes and Methods of Drifting Have Changed: Development work has, like other phases of mining, changed considerably in the last 20 years, from cleaning by hand to the use of a mechanical method. The conception of a standard drift has also changed. Before the advent of mechanical loading in stopes there were many pieces of main line drift averaging 7 ft high x 9 ft wide. Some changes in drilling equipment have been made such as reducing the weight of column, clamp, air feed, and fittings to go with the HC10 Cleveland jackhamer. Other changes have been made in drill steel such as the use of detachable bits; throw-away variety, screw type, and the tungsten-carbide insert bits. Later developments have introduced spiral-welded pipe with victaulic couplings, millisecond exploders, bulky powder, and the use of electric cap lamps. Experimental work is going on continually in various phases of development work, some to be tried and discarded, others gradually to become standard practice. To sum up, the standard method of development now in use at Desloge is as follows: The work is done on a two-shift cycle 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Two men known as development drillers comprise a crew on each shift. These two men arrive at their work about 7:30 to find a round blasted by the previous shift. After scaling down back and walls they proceed to the cleaning operation, using either a Joy loader and shuttle car, a drag hoist mounted on a slide ramp, or an Eimco Finlay to load into a 21/2 ton mine car. Cleaning may take from 2 to 4 hr depending on conditions such as length of round broken, length of haul, and other variables. After fitting up pipe and setting up columns and drills they are ready to drill a round which should measure 9 ft high x 11 ft wide and break from 5 to 7 ft advance. Proceed southeast along State Route 634 about three-quarters of a mile, at which point an old longing road turns north along a ridge and leads to the marl outcrops about one-half mile distant. The Philbates property lies three-quarters of a mile farther west along State Route 33 from the junction with State Route 634. The property lies north of State Route 33 and east of State Route 623 (fig. 1). The marl deposits are on the north end of the farm. The Chesapeake Corp. tract comprises 174 acres and the Philbato property 58 acres."

The authors review the literature and discuss the application of methods to the design of thickeners for ilocculated metallurgical pulps. The use and evaluation of flocculents is described. Experimental data show that design based upon laboratory settlingdata is acceptable. The economic aspect of design is also discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years there has been little change in the methods for the design of thickener installations. While modifications have been made in the method of applying the data all methods have been based on the observee settling rate of the solids. The development of a theoretical approach based on physical data would involve so many variables which affect the settling rate that the more practical approach of direct observation seems unlikely to be replaced as the basis of design.The advent of synthetic fiocculents has introduced a modification in operation which affects design and should be considered. The authors review the subject and attempt to bring it up to date with present day procedure. Until recently the original work of Coe and Clevenger (1916) remained the basis of thickener design. They described their observation of the different zones encountered in settling, namely clarification, feed, transition, and compression or thickening- zones. The solids pass through the transition zone in settling from feed density to some higher density where settling ceases and ·some compression or compaction effect controls. the density obtained. The point at which the settling zone ceases to exist is known as the critical point.

As the deposits located closer to the surface are getting depleted, more and more Canadian mines produce ore from considerable depths. Deep mining represents a number of serious challenges including high rock temperature. Conventional diesel powered loadhaul- dump machines and trucks so widely used in metal mines constitute an additional source of heat and noxious gases. Due to this, they have a substantial adverse impact on a quantity of fresh air required and a cost of ventilation, particularly since the mines have to meet more and more stringent regulations in this respect. In this context, the paper examines possible alternatives for diesel powered equipment, both these commercially available as those at the stages of prototypes or under development. They are reviewed with regards to their principles, required infrastructure, stage of technology development and its progress. The questions of their flexibility, practicality and economic viability are also addressed. Following the above a potential for their implementation and possible benefits (if any) in the conditions of deep Canadian mines is discussed. The paper concludes with short to medium term predictions concerning the most promising drive alternatives for vehicles destined to operate in deep metal mines.

A mathematical model has been developed for intense pneumatic smelting processes, such as the Sirosmelt group of processes, to assist in establishing optimum process conditions and to permit operator training. The model first solicits input operating conditions from disk files and from the operator. During operation, the feed, fuel, and air (or oxygen) rates are automatically adjusted to maintain the desired process targets. Alternatively, these parameters, as with all other inputs, may be manually controlled by the operator. Selected process parameters are displayed to the terminal in a regularly updated diagram of the process,. Outputs of detailed information including heat and mass balances are available for immediate inspection or for use by ancillary plotting packages. Development of a robust free energy minimization routine has led to a flexible and time efficent model capable of handling a range of pyrometallurical systems. Modelling of tin smelting, lead smelting, copper smelting, matte fuming, and pneumatic steel-making has been sucessfully carried out. Typical outputs from the model are given and discussed in terms of their internal consistency and relationship to the operation of the relevant Sirosmelt process. `

"An environmentally clean and virtually waste-less technology for treatment of domestic and industrial solid waste (HGIW) including other toxic chloride-containing materials has been developed and proven on a full scale by the Gintsvetmet Institute in cooperation with some other Russian organizations.The essence of the process is that the HGIW are decomposing in the liquid base in air-bed slag melted layer under the temperature of 1350-1400°C.HGIW is considered as fuel heat-producing energy of 1500-1800 kCal/kg with 51,7%.Processing of municipal and industrial solid waste in molten slag is carried out autogenously without additional fuel, the blowing is enriched by oxygen up to 50-70%.The complex makes it possible to treat the furnace charge without preliminary drying and sorting with big differences in chemical and morphological composition due to the versatile firing chamber.The proposed process resolves the acute and globally significant problem of dioxin formation.The purpose of the proposed technology is to ensure such destruction of the structural lattice that would guarantee irreversible transformation of the resultant substances to prevent formation of dioxins. It was established the required preconditions to achieve this purpose."

The Kokkola roasting plant uses more than 20 different zinc concentrates every year. During recent years there has been an increase in the variation in concentrate quality; in particular, the amount of fine-grained and low-grade concentrates has increased. Therefore, a great deal of development work has been carried out to improve the operational flexibility, online availability, production capacity and calcine quality of the roasting plant. This work consisted of a heat and material balance model of the roasting based on HSC Chemistry software, a new water admixture system for the concentrate feed, a new oxygen feed system for the process air line, improved cooling of the furnace and boiler and improved operational practices, dust removal and concentrate mixing. These new process control tools and other improvements, as well as some test results, will be described in this paper. The oxygen feed may be used to improve production capacity and to decrease the sulfide content of the calcine. The water feed may be used with fine concentrates to decrease both dust carry-over and the temperature in the top part of the furnace. Improved cooling of the furnace and boiler helps to increase production capacity.

"An extensive research program has been undertaken over recent years to reduce the risk of fires and explosions in underground coal mines. The research projects have integrated extensive field studies and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of goaf gas flow behaviour to develop optimum proactive strategies to prevent and control spontaneous combustion and fires ingoaf areas. The research has developed a fundamental understanding of the air and gas flowbehaviour in goaf areas and provided a detailed understanding of the eff ects of various geological,ventilation, operational and inertisation design parameters on goaf gas distribution. The researchinvestigations have also provided a better understanding of the flow behaviour of gases from the heating in the goaf areas and the effect of various gas and spontaneous combustion controltechnologies and strategies. Field studies conducted at a number of underground coal mines have shown that the proactive strategies were successful in reducing oxygen ingress into the goaf areas and in reducing the risk of fires and explosions in the underground coal mines. The results of various research investigations and guidelines for reducing the risk of fires and explosions in underground coal mines are presented in this paper."

Harmon E. Keyes (Chemical & Metallurgical Engineer, Eagar, Ariz.)-Chemical dissolution of chalcocite by acidic ferric sulfate is well known. Resulting elemental sulfur may be oxidized to sulfuric acid by heated ferric sulfate. Laboratory tests at Southwest Experiment Station, USBM, Tucson, generally confirmed stoichiometric relations of 1 part Cu dissolved to 1.750 parts ferric iron reduced, using CP chemicals, dried ore samples, and apparatus cleaned with potable water. Recirculation with open-drainage percolation to increase copper in leaching solvent was followed successfully when appropriate, both in laboratory and Pinto Valley pilot tests. Before 1924 attempts to produce ferric sulfate by aerating ferrous sulfate solution were known. Initial oxidation was satisfactory, but rate slowed below practicality as oxidation progressed and acidity increased. Also, due to hydrolysis of ferric sulfate, a ferric precipitate of hydroxide and basic sulfate resulted. Both laboratory and pilot plant tests gave similar results, regardless of whether CP ferrous sulfate or scrap iron cementation discard solution was used. Rapid oxidation of ferrous hydroxide by air alone is well known to analytical chemists. INTRODUCTION Underground gold mining operations are found in South Africa, U.S.S.R., Canada, the United States, Zimbabwe, Ghana , Brazil. Australia, China and many other countries. The methods used for extraction differ from highly mechanized trackless mining in the developed countries to the labour intensive systems of the third world nations. The climatic conditions in which mines are situated vary from equatorial to arctic. The rock temperatures and the depth of workings also vary significantly from shallow to extreme depth. The Western Deep Levels mine in South Africa is the deepest and exceeds 4.000 metres in depth with strata temperatures above 55°C. These major differences between mining fields result in significantly different ventilation problems in underground gold mines. The ore types also vary and some deposits have high silica contents while other mines extract sulphide ores. Methane may also be encountered in underground gold mines and can have a large influence on the ventilation practice. A combined physical/biochemical process for the precombustion removal of 13 inorganic hazardous air pollutant (HAP) precursors, i.e., Sb, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cl, Co, F, Pb, Hg, Mn, Ni and Se, from coal was tested. Biochemical processes for removal of HAP precursors from coal potentially offer advantages of deeper cleaning, more specificity and less coal loss. The slurry column is a second-generation process for the beneficiation o f fine (60-mesh x µm coal by a combination of physical separation of mineral matter and biooxidation of pyrite. Sixty-seven percent removal of pyrite from a 60-mesh Pittsburgh #8 coal was achieved at a 35% (w/w) slurry concentration and a five-day reactor residence time. Ninety percent of the heating value of the feed coal was recovered. Among the HAP precursors of most concern, over half of the Se, As and Hg were removed from the feed coal. From 40% to 70% of most HAP precursors were removed from the feed coal. Hg in the feed coal was reduced from 0.12 to 0.054 ,µg/g in the product coal, while waste coal contained 0.24 µg/g.

The Bowdens Silver Deposit is a low sulfidation epithermal silver-base metal deposit that has formed on the northern margin of a hydrothermal system within air-fall breccias, ignimbrites and crystal tuffs of rhyolitic composition. The deposit lies near the north-eastern margin of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the rhyolitic host rocks are of Early Permian age. The silver mineralisation occurs as flat-lying zones of disseminations and silicic fracture-filling within the Rylstone Volcanics and is closely associated with sulfides of iron, arsenic, lead and zinc. High-grade silver mineralisation is also found in steeply-dipping fracture zones which host banded sulfide veins. Studies of the alteration products indicate that high temperature fluids, flowing from south of the current project area, resulted in quartz (¦adularia) û illite/sericite alteration. Cool, low pH steam-heated waters on the northern and eastern margins of the prospect area resulted in siderite û smectite-illite clay û Fe-carbonate û marcasite û kaolinite alteration. Mixing of the two fluid types resulted in the deposition of iron and base metal sulfides, a decrease in both sulfur activity and pH of the mineralising fluid, and subsequent silver mineralisation.

From an engineering perspective an ideal industrial noise control solution focuses directly on the actual source of the poise. Eliminating the noise-generating mechanism altogether obviates the need for other noise contra l treatments or hearing protection devices. However, in cases where attenuating the source is not feasible engineering controls must be oriented toward blocking the path that the sound waves travel toward employees. Acoustical enclosures are commonly used as sound path treatments to contain the noise from a machine: alternatively a control room/booth or equipment operator's cab may be used to isolate the worker from the noise. Anyone who has successfully used acoustical enclosures knows that the design procurement, and installation process is deceptively simple. Alt too often First-time efforts fait to account for many of the constraints that can render the enclosure essentially useless. Things that cannot be overlooked include: providing convenient worker access (physical and visual): allowing for proper machine operation/product flow; and supplying fresh air or preventing undue heat or contaminate build-up inside the enclosure. All of these factors must be given careful consideration, otherwise the enclosure will not perform adequately.

From the MAP3S Precipitation Chemistry Network data bank five years of data from January 1, 1977 to December 31, 1981 have been analyzed. No definite trend has been observed in the concentrations and the total depositions in the analyzed period. Comparison between the weekly and event samples show that the weekly samples could underestimate the total deposition. Preliminary results show that there is a reasonably good correlation between the precipitation composition and the emissions feeding the air in which the precipitation is formed.

Data analysis of pentane and hexane adsorption from natural gas in a fixed bed of silica gel shows that constant length mass transfer zones form, the curvature of the adsorption isotherm controls the growth of the mass transfer zone and surface diffusion of molecules inside the silica gel particle controls the mass transfer rate. Curvature of the hexane isothem is more than the curvature of the pentane isotherm. Because of this curvature the hexane adsorption zones reached a constant length. In contrast, the pentane adsorption zones were always increasing in length during each run. A procedure was developed to obtain correct mass transfer coefficients using effluent curve slopes. These transfer roefficients increase with the amount of hydrocarbon adsorbed on the silica gel particle. The characteristic shape of the hexane effluent curves also show that molecular diffusion inside the silica gel particle controls the adsorption rate of pentane and hexane. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanisms that control the dynamic adsorption of hydrocarbons from a natural gas onto silica gel. Before one can deal effectively with multicomponent adsorption, the transfer mechanisms by which a single hydrocarbon component is adsorbed from the gas stream must be defined. Two principal investigations of this system have been published ' and indicate that diffusion through the gas around the particle controls the adsorption rate. Some of the experimental observations in each study either do not support this transfer mechanism or are inconsistent with the mathematical model used in analysis. In this study surface diffusion of molecules inside the particle controls the mass transfer rate of pentane and hexane. This mechanism is indicated by the effluent curve shape for a constant length transfer zone and by the variation of the mass transfer coefficient with concentration of the adsorbed hydrocarbon. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS — MATHEMATICAL MODELS Mathematical solutions for the isothermal adsorption of a trace component from a carrier gas are derived from three relationships: the mass balance or continuity equation, the equilibrium relationship between the gas and solid phases, and a mass transfer rate equation. The transfer rate is proportional to the adsorbate concentration gradient within either the gas or solid phase. Mathematical solutions of these equations usually give the adsorbate concentration as a function of time and distance from the bed inlet. That part of the bed in which the adsorbate concentration changes from a maximum to a minimum value is called the transfer zone. This transfer zone is directly related to a plot of the effluent concentration vs time which has a characteristic S-shape. This general shape is determined by the continuity equation and occurs in many processes of diffusional transfer.

In grinding-classification circuit, overgrinding, resulted from the fact that hydrophobic materials have higher density than hydrophilicmaterials, has been known as a knotty problem. By using of the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) as classifier, in this pair, the overgrinding of hydrophobic materials has been successfully minimized. Compared with the conventional hydrocyclones, the ASH has less fine hydrophobic particles in the underflow and less large particles in the overflow, which shows that the recovery of fine hydrophobic particles in the overflow has been improved in the ASH.

Active interest in the North Central Texas area centered in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone-producing zone, near the town of Avoca, in the northeast part of Jones County. This producing horizon was discovered in 1937, in the Iron Mountain Oil Company's well No. 1 Olander, in sec. 196, B.B.B. & C. survey, at 3238 to 3250 ft. During the development of this pool, it was generally referred to as the Avoca pool. As a second pool has been discovered in the same producing zone, also near the town of Avoca, the writer has taken the liberty of changing the name of the original Avoca pool to Avoca-Olander pool. Forty producers had been drilled in the Avoca-Olander pool by the end of 1938; their initial ranged from 28 to 300 bbl. per hour. Stimulus was given to the interest in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone when the Ungren-Frazier No. 1 Griffin, in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, Jones County, found the limestone from 3225 to 3250 ft., with an initial production of 931 bbl. per day. (This new pool has been given the name of Avoca-Griffin pool, by the writer.) The best well to be completed, up to the present time, is the Bert Fields No. 1 Taylor in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, which had an initial production of 748 bbl. in 3 hours. The Owen-Snebold No. 1 McKeever in sec. 158, B.B.B. & C. survey, in northwest Shackelford County, added to the interest in the Palo Pinto limestone when it extended the Ivy pool with a well in the Palo Pinto limestone from 3145 to 3183 ft., and was estimated good for 6,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 6000 bbl. of oil per day. During 1938, Stonewall County obtained its first commercial producer when the Stonewall Oil Co. in No. 1 Parriott discovered the Palo Pinto limestone saturated from 5169 to 5176 ft. and tested 371 bbl. per day. Two new producing horizons were discovered about 2 miles east of the old Noddle Creek pool, Jones County; the first, the Humble Oil & Refining Co. No. 1 Irvin, in sec. 48, block 18, T. & P. R. R. Co. survey, which had saturated limestone from 2550 to 2567 ft. and was good for 100 bbl. per day; the second, in the Humble No. 1 Horton, sec. 40, which
