High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology is a novel process that could potentially be the step-change needed in ore processability in the mining industry. The propensity of high voltage pulses towards mineral-enriched ore particles during treatment makes this technology selective and has the potential to enable ore pre-concentration by size separation. In this study, the potential for pre-concentration of a low grade copper-gold ore sample subjected to HVP pretreatment is investigated and compared to that achievable after mechanical breakage in JKMRC’s rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). The data show that a better pre-concentration result can be achieved after HVP processing than conventional breakage. The gold pre-concentration potential is much better than that observed for copper. 4D HVP pre-concentration characteristic curves were produced to assess the metallurgical performance possible as a function of energy input. The case study shows that when targeting a nominal metal recovery of 90 per cent for gold, the HVP pre-concentration technique can split the low grade ore (0.9 ppm gold and 0.28 per cent copper in the feed size 26.5-37.5 mm) into two components – a low grade oversize material (0.3 ppm gold and 0.15 per cent copper) and a high grade undersize material (1.0 ppm gold and 0.3 per cent copper). The mass split to the low grade is 23 per cent. Under this mass split scenario, gold recovery to screen undersize is 90 per cent and copper recovery is 85 per cent. The HVP treatment of this feed size requires a specific energy (spark) of 2.8 kWh/t.There is further research that would be required before industrial uptake of the HVP pre-concentration technology would be possible. Two recent antitrust cases, coming from widely separated areas, different industries and involving wholly different facts were decided by the Supreme Court on June 7, 1965. The decisions in these two cases may well prove to be the most important and far-reaching decisions in the field of labor law that have been handed down in the last 24 years. These cases, although quite dissimilar factually, had one common element. In both, the gravamen of the antitrust violation was bottomed on the terms of labor agreements negotiated by a multiemployer group. These cases are usually referred to as Pennington1 and Jewel Teat. Since a number.-of references will be made to the antitrust laws, it may be well to state briefly the applicable portions. Section I of the Sherman Antitrust Act makes "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal...". Section 2 imposes criminal sanctions against "Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states...". Under Section 4 of the Clayton Act a person who sustains damages as a result of a violation of the antitrust laws is entitled to recover treble damages plus costs.

"Lamps and lighting products are the most commonly used electrical products around the globe. With the improvement in lamp technologies, lighting products have grown complex and hence require an improved recycling process. The LED lamps consist of various valuable metals such as iron, copper, aluminum, chromium, silver, and gold, as well as non-metals such as glass, plastics, and fibers. In addition, there are also traces of hazardous substances such as lead, arsenic, and mercury. A major step in the recovery process is size reduction, and researchers have suggested that up to 40% of the total valuable material is lost during the shredding and grinding processes. SELFRAG is a high voltage selective fragmentation comminution technology that uses high voltage pulses in a water medium to efficiently separate the metals at a coarser size without generating many fine particles. It has been proposed that during the fragmentation process of electronic waste (e-waste), the metals can be separated without fine grinding. This research considers the applicability of high voltage pulse fragmentation for LED lamps. Eight different types of LED lamps were processed through the SELFRAG unit at varying pulses to study metal liberation. The product obtained was characterized for metal liberation, metal grades, and liberation analysis. The specific energy consumption for this size reduction process was also monitored. INTRODUCTION Lamps and bulbs are the most commonly used electrical products in homes, offices, industrial operations, and streets. According to Energy Star research (2006), an average US household has more than 40 sockets for light bulbs and consumes approximately 2100kWh every year for lighting. The development in lamp technology has pushed the boundary for newer products. The LED lamps have been taking over the market from the incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). According to the US Department of Energy (2012) and myLEDlight.com (2007), LED lamps have several benefits over other lamps. LEDs produce light hemi-spherically, which increases their efficiency in directional light emission. It has higher breakage resistance from vibration or transportation. LED lamps use up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs thus making them highly energy efficient; They have a longer lifespan, lasting 10 times longer than a CFL and 133 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulb. Because of all the benefits, Smallwood (2014) suggested that the market of LED lamps will grow to $12.2 billion by 2018."

In the transpassive region, about 0.4 to 0.8 V (SCE), aggressive oxidation of pyrite occurred. The reaction products in this region were Fe(III) oxide, sulfate ion and partially oxidized sulfur intermediates. The growth kinetics of the reaction product film, resulting from transpassive oxidation of pyrite were studied using chronoamperometry measurement with both stationary and rotating disk electrodes. The effect of electrode rotation speed, solution pH and temperature were examined. Potentiostatic measurements were well correlated by a paralinear rate equation, suggesting the formation of an intermediate passive film, associated with the simultaneous dissolution of the outer layer of the film. Activation energies of 66.17 kJ/mole (15.83 kcal/mole) and 38.67 kJ/mole (9.25 kcal/mole) were obtained for associated parabolic and linear rate constants respectively, at an applied potential of 0.6 V.

Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. Os aços com médio teor manganês são uma classe da terceira geração de aços avançados de alta resistência (AHSS), combinam propriedades mecânicas como ductilidade e resistência mecânica e são assistidos pelo efeito TRIP, características determinantes para sua aplicação na indústria automobilística. Convencionalmente, tais ligas são produzidas por meio de laminação a quente e a frio, seguidas de recozimento intercrítico. No entanto, o trabalho a morno têm ganhado interesse com o intuito de reduzir custos e tempo operacionais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a influência da laminação a quente e a morno por meio de análises de microscopia óptica, eletrônica de varredura, difração de raios x, microdureza Vickers e técnicas de EBSD em um aço 8Mn- 0,08C. Observou-se uma microestrutura mais refinada e deformada no material laminado a morno com um maior percentual de austenita retida, o que derivou uma menor dureza. Na amostra laminada a quente, o valor médio de dureza evidenciou uma microestrutura martensítica de baixo teor de carbono. Em relação à textura verificou-se uma maior intensidade de componentes da fibra a na amostra laminada a morno devido a um maior grau de encruamento neste processamento termomecânico.

Through laboratory and underground studies, the Bureau of Mines has evaluated the use of passive barriers (dust shields) to help confine dust generated by longwall shearers to the face area. Laboratory studies focused first on selection of the optimum barrier design, which proved to be a simple, gobside barrier (made of conveyor belting), coupled with a headgate splitter arm, which was found necessary to prevent the dust cloud from entering the walkway at the headgate end of the shearer when cutting tail to head. Further laboratory testing was done to determine whether using passive barriers in combination with different water-spray dust-reduction methods, including the shearer-clearer system developed by the Bureau, would improve dust reduction over that from using the water sprays alone. It was found that the combination of gobs ide passive barriers plus the full shearer-clearer system was most effective, and surmised that this would be especially useful in thicker seams. However, underground testing revealed that the shearer-clearer system alone was 35 pct more effective in reducing dust contamination than when used with the gobside passive barriers, and far more effective than using passive barriers with a conventional water spray system. For such an effective system as the shearer-clearer; the reduction in avail-able space over the top of the machine actually impeded system performance; this was shom1 in both eastern and western mines. But when used with comparatively inefficient water spray systems, the passive barriers, used in combination with a headgate splitter arm, provide consider-able help in reducing dust levels in the walkway.

One of the problems with mining projects is the setting of the design criteria that will best match the requirements. Normally this is expressed in economic terms but can be other factors. With massive orebodies these problems are often compounded by the general lack of distinct mining boundaries. A technique using evaluation surfaces was developed at Palabora for the underground mine design. This technique has subsequently been applied on several other mining projects to assist in the determination of the design criteria. This paper discusses the method, illustrated by some of the results of these studies.

BUMPS in No. 2 Mine, Springhill, N. S., furnished the main feature for discussion at the morning meeting* on Ground Movement and Subsidence on Feb. 18. Walter Herd, the author of the paper by which the discussion was introduced, not being well, was unable to be present. The paper was presented by T. L. McCall, who laid stress on the presence of sand- stone as the cause of bumps, on the value of retreating longwall in eliminating such phenomena at the coal face and on the advantage of wide headings with packs on either side, leaving space behind them for any coal that bumps might dislodge. George S. Rice, who presided, referred to his visits to the Nova Scotia mines and said that bumps usually occurred only where the coal was thick and strong and the roof and floor both more than usually hard. If any of the three were weak, bumps were not likely to occur. In the Nova Scotia mine, to which Mr. Herd referred, there was no material for packwalls and for this reason as well as for safety he had been convinced that long- wall retreating with a small percentage of pack walling was the most feasible plan.

"INTRODUCTION During the last decades, many underground facilities for the storage of hydrocarbons have been excavated worldwide and the technology is fully mature. Similarly to other underground structures, the initial basic design has to be adapted along with the work progress, in order to cope with the actual site conditions and in particular the geology, hydrogeology and associated rockmass quality. In addition, Client’s or underground Contractor’s constraints (such as resources availability, schedule or cost impact) may vary from design to construction and require last minute adjustments. Engineers are required to introduce flexibility and anticipation of unexpected situations (similar to the above-mentioned) while conceiving large underground facilities. Although most of the cases require only minor adaptations, crucial parts of the facility have sometimes to be considerably modified and reviewed. This article will present four cases evidencing how the design of one of these essential structures - the concrete plug – has been adjusted during site implementation without impairing the initial performances. Hydrodynamic containment The product containment of the unlined caverns discussed here is ensured by the principle of hydrodynamic containment. A permanent water flow is naturally or artificially maintained with an orientation toward the storage cavern and then, neither product-tight membrane nor lining are required. The hydraulic gradient (and the associated water flow lines), being directed from the surrounding mass toward the cavern, prevent from outward migration of the product. If the hydraulic gradient is not sufficient or if the water table is evidencing instability, water can be artificially injected into the rockmass through purpose-built boreholes, drilled from dedicated galleries. This water injection system, called the water curtain, is generally located several tens of meters above the level of the cavern. This principle is illustrated here after."

Para a maior eficiência na técnica conhecida como Slag Splashing, empregada com fins de manutenção e reparo de refratários de convertedor LD, a escória deve apresentar características apropriadas em termos de viscosidade e fração de sólidos. No presente trabalho, desenvolveu-se uma metodologia híbrida, combinando a utilização de padrões para a caracterização visual de escórias na planta, baseada em critérios de atribuição de notas, com a simulação termodinâmica usando o software FactSage para determinação das fases presentes na escória, quantificação de fração de sólidos e cálculo da viscosidade efetiva. A metodologia proposta permite identificar os quadrantes ideais de viscosidade efetiva, fração de sólidos e teor de ferro total, de modo que se possa garantir escórias com notas altas, apresentando qualidade apropriada para o processo. Os resultados indicam que as escórias com nota 3 (ótima) são obtidas nas seguintes condições: temperatura de fim de sopro de 1690-1720ºC, viscosidade efetiva na faixa de 0,070-0,650 Pa.s, fração de sólidos de 13-22%, teor de ferro total na escória de 14-17,5%..

In recognition of the practicality of using inclined micropiles as elements for foundation support to resist static and seismic loading conditions, specifically in retrofitting projects, this study presents an investigation into the beh avior of an inclined micropile subjected to simultaneous lateral load and bending moment. Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed using the finite element method to assess the influence of micropile geometrical parameters such as angle of inclination, length, and diameter on the response of micropile-soil system. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is used to define the behavior of soil and stabilized soil around micropile materials and the micropile, constructed of concrete and steel, is assumed to be elastic. The interaction between soil and micropile is taken into account by defining interaction elements covering both tangential and normal behavior. The study is carried out using nonlinear FEM analyses. The results of these simulations indicate that negative micropiles, in which slip surface deflects downward, have higher lateral load capacity than positive micropiles with slip surface deflecting upward. The conducted research also shows that increasing the diameter and the length of micropile increases the lateral load capacity. Increasing micropile diameter is more effective in increasing lateral load capacity. A relationship is developed from statistical regression analysis of the finite element modeling computations to estimate the lateral displacement of a micropile inclined at an angle of 30o in silty sands.

CITIC Heavy Industries has a large installed base of grinding equipment throughout Africa in different configurations, including high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill and semi-autogenous ball crusher. The total installed power of CITIC’s mills exceeds 430 MW. In this paper, we compare several typical grinding circuits of copper in Africa with about 15 kt/d throughput based on ore properties, process selection, equipment sizing, and key equipment capital and operating costs. Actual operating performance is also introduced. The comparison for the following mine sites provides a general reference for the selection of copper grinding circuits with this approximate throughput: Kamoa-Kakula Copper Mine with high-pressure grinding rollers with ball mill circuit, and Deziwa and Sicomine Copper-Cobalt Mines with semi-autogenous ball crusher circuits

In 1930 , 65,448 long tons of virgin or primary tin were consumed by 1,292 establishments in the United States , representing about 91 per cent of the total consumption as computed from imports , exports , and stocks at the beginning and the end of the year . The reported consumption was equivalent to 38 per cent of the world's tin production in 1930 , estimated at 171,000 tons , and was 12 per cent less than the 74,369 tons consumed by 1,307 establishments in 1928 . Decreased consumption of new tin in 1930 ás compared to 1928 was a reflection of the general industrial depression . All of the tin- consuming industries showed substantial decreases except tin plate and terneplate , white metal , and tinning , which showed small tonnage increases aggregating only 1,200 tons . The largest tonnage decrease was in the use of new tin in babbitt which declined 33 per cent in 1930 as compared to 1928. This was largely attributable to the decreased production of automobiles and trucks , which was 24 per cent lower in 1930 than in 1928. Percentage decreases in other important tin- consuming industries were as follows : Solder 18 per cent , bronze 19 per cent , tin foil 40 per cent , chemicals 23 per cent , tin oxide 44 per cent , and type metal 46 per cent . The distribution of the amount consumed by various uses during 1927 , 1928 , and 1930 is shown in table 1 . Consumption studies indicate the fact that variation in tin consumption from year to year parallels the fluctuations in demand for the already wellestablished tin products . For example , the manufacture of motor cars and trucks3 required only 11,000 tons of tin in 1930 compared to 19,000 tons in 1928 ; the canning industry continues to require the greater portion of the tin plate and much of the solder . Recently developed industries , while affecting total consumption of bearing metals , solders , etc. , to some extent , have made little change in the relative importance of these commodities as consumers of tin .

In the Mesel sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit, the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration is controlled by steeply dipping faults and shallowly dipping lithologies. Hydrothermal alteration of carbonate rock is characterised by decalcification, dolomitisation and silicification. Intense argillic alteration occurs in a laccolithic andesite intrusion adjacent to decalcified and silicified carbonate units. Sulphide minerals (pyrite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite and cinnabar) accompany hydrothermal alteration and precious metal mineralisation. The trace elements Ag, As, Sb and Hg are zoned spatially throughout the deposit. Mesel contains a mineable gold reserve of 7.8 million tonnes at 7.3 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is preferentially localised in carbonate rocks adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion. The ore body consists of a central, near-vertical, high grade 'feeder' system flanked by tabular, inward dipping, moderate grade 'ouflow' zones. Mineralisation is controlled predominantly by two steeply dipping faults with high grade (=10 g/t) gold zones centred about structural intersections and fault splays. Gold is submicron size and locked in very fine grained (<10 microns), disseminated and fracture-controlled arsenical pyrite. The Mesel deposit developed where high angle faults guided ascending, sulphidising fluids into reactive carbonate stratigraphy adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion and during subsequent migration of the auriferous fluids along 'outflow' channels. Early decalcification and dolomitisation enhanced porosity and permeability prior to silicification and sulphidation. Gold deposition occurred late in the genesis of the deposit.

The leaching characteristics of a number of Australian uranium ores were determined under acid and alkaline conditions. Ores from the Ranger, Nabarlek and Koongarra deposits in the Northern Territory were readily leached in dilute sulphuric acid. Suitable processing conditions were: leaching at 35-40°C, pH 1·52·0 and redox potential -475 mV for periods of 16-24h with ore ground to 50 per cent -200 mesh CB.S.S.). Ore from the Roxby Downs deposit in South Australia required leaching at 55°C and a redox potential of -650 mV to achieve a satisfactory recovery. All ores contained refractory minerals which were not leached under conventional conditions, limiting uranium extraction to 86-96 per cent.Carbonate leaching of carnotite in calcrete ores from Yeelirrie and Lake Way in Western Australia yielded uranium extractions of at least 98 per cent. Leaching rates were considerably faster than those reported for other applications of alkaline leaching as the slow oxidation step was not required.

It is a widely accepted "fact" that a Koepe friction hoist is generally the best solution for production hoisting when compared to a double drum hoists. This would appear to be true if one looks at the initial capital cost of just the hoist, and also if one compares the size of the motors selected for the duty. But is this the whole story? What are the longer term costs involved in the hoist's operation, and what are the relative efficiency's of the two designs? Perhaps the Koepe hoist design enjoys a better reputation than it deserves.

"Environmental risk is becoming more important in debt and equity financing decisions in the mining industry worldwide. Demonstration of good environmental management practices and management systems has a direct impact on the ability of mine developers, operators and investors to raise financing. Based on experience in providing due diligence services, there are a number of factors that are important in assessing financial risks related to environmental issues in either new projects or existing facilities. A frame-work for understanding the importance and priorities of each element of environmental management is presented.IntroductionIn the context of lending money to a corporation, environmental issues represent another aspect of credit risk (Henry, 1989). These issues, because of their nature, represent the potential for large unforeseen expenditures if they are not known or acknowledged and are not being proactively managed. Lenders, other investors and their advisors, are becoming increasingly aware of the potential financial impact of environmental issues. Consequently, they are increasing their requirements for environmental audits to review the environmental issues, management practices and systems when they are considering financing mining and/or metallurgical processing operations worldwide.Many banks have signed the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Statement by Banks on Environment and Sustainable Development. Banks in this category include National Westminster Bank, the Union Bank of Switzerland, Deutsche Bank, and the Royal Bank of Canada."
