Before specifications are discussed it may be well to define the term "Mineral Aggregates." Professor K. B. Woods (1) defined "Mineral Aggregate--An aggregation of sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, or other material of mineral composition used in combination with a binding medium to form bituminous and portland cement concrete, macadam, mastic, mortar, plaster, etc., or alone as in railroad ballast, filter beds, and various manufacturing processes, such as fluxing, etc. " This definition is too all inclusive for the purposes of this paper; therefore, this discussion will be confined to specifications for natural aggregates which means sand and gravel and crushed stone, and limited primarily to coarse aggregate which is aggregate larger than one-quarter inch in size. To the uninitiated, this may seem to be a very limited subject on an unimportant material. However, aggregates are essential in all types of construction. A 24,300 tonnes per year state of the art Silicon smelter is being constructed for Barrack Silicon Pty Ltd at Kemerton, 20 kilometres north of the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The plant is designed for the reduction of high purity quartzite lump to metallic silicon in two 27MVa Demag submerged arc electric furnaces. The primary reductant, a high purity charcoal, will be manufactured at the plant from locally sourced jarrah wood waste (Eucalyptus Marginata). The legal issues surrounding the regulation of subsidence are among the major concerns facing the underground mining industry today. Whether subsidence occurs almost immediately as a result of longwall mining or without warning as a result of room and pillar mining conducted years ago, the resulting disputes are highly controversial and typical of the disputes involving the competing interests of surface and mineral estate owners. Until recently, the law governing these disputes was firmly established under the common law. The passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act 1, the utilization of new mining technologies, and the general heightened environmental awareness of our times, however, have interjected new issues into this area of the law. State and Federal court decisions and administrative agency interpretations have helped clarify some of the issues. However, as evidenced by the many recent lawsuits between operators, surface owners, and regulatory agencies, many uncertainties still exist.

Solvent extraction is widely used in hydrometallurgical processing of uranium for purification and upgrading leach solutions prior to recovery of metal values. Conventional solvent extraction processing utilizes mixer-settler units to achieve mixing of the aqueous and organic phases. Use of mixer-settlers permits continuous treatment of feed, but the processing rate is restricted by the time required for phase separation after mixing. Because of the high-shear type mixing used in a mixer settler a portion of the organic phase becomes mechanically entrained in the aqueous resulting in loss of extractant. For this reason application of mixer-settler units is often limited by the settling area required for phase separation, especially for systems where high volume throughputs are desirable or necessary. Several alternatives to mixer-settler operations involving the use of column extractors have been proposed. Packed columns (1-2), in which organic and aqueous phases are fed countercurrently, utilize packing materials similar to those used in gas absorption or distillation columns. Extraction columns utilizing rotating(3-5) or reciprocating elements(6-7) to achieve mixing have also been developed. Van Dijek(8) originated pulsed columns, in which mechanical or air pulsing of the phases enhances the mixing in the vessel. Each of the above column processes involve varying degrees of mechanical complexity which may lead to operational difficulties.

At Brunswick Mine, an increase in the number of seismically-related falls of ground and in particular rockbursts occurred during 1999. This was due to the ever-increasing stress levels in the remaining ore reserves, mining in difficult highly stressed areas and in particular troublesome geological features. In conjunction with the Noranda Technology Centre, development of rockburst support systems started at the Brunswick Mine in 1996 and efforts were accelerated in 1999. A support package consisting of #6 gauge chain link mesh, #0 gauge heavy mesh straps, and a 1 m by 1 m pattern of modified conebolts was developed. The conebolts were modified to enable mixing of the resin anchoring. Two major rockbursts occurred during an intense seismic episode at the Brunswick Mine from October 13th to 17th , 2000.The area was evacuated approximately four hours before the first burst hit, and remained closed during the seismic ?flurry??. The first damaging activity occurred around midnight on Friday the 13th, and a second damaging episode occurred on the 17th that included a local Richter Magnitude 2.7 event. The second rockburst had dimensions of approximately 5 m by 5 m by 20 m or 2150 tonnes of massive sulphide material (density 4300 kg/m3). The first failure area was more extensive, caving approximately six metres of an intersection back with the lateral extent not safely measurable. This paper briefly describes the mining conditions that led to the bursting, the seismic response of the region, the mechanisms thought to have caused the bursts, and a yielding support system which had been partially installed before the burst.

The comparison of actual energy of comminution with theoretical surface energy presents a wide gap. On the other hand, Solid State Theory presents a viewpoint that places actual energy of breakage in understandable relationship with the theoretical strength of materials. Therefore the physical background of comminution theory favors Kick's Law. A11 discussions of comminution theory appear farfetched when comparison is made of the actual energy of crushing with the energy input called for by thermodynamic theory. Quoting Taggart:' "The work required to crush halite was of the general order of 0.10 kg cm per sq cm of new surface produced (based on air percolation) whereas the theoretical energy of this new surface, based on thermodynamic calculation by a number of investigators is 1 x 10'4 kg cm per sq cm or the work expended was 1000 times the new surface energy — an indicated crushing efficiency of 0.10 pct." It is frustrating to probe into comminution theory with the prospect that the energy one is measuring is 99.9 pct waste energy. Do the laws of comminution deal with energy consumed by mineral breakage or with waste heat energy? There seems to be something wrong. Solid State Theory may provide the answer. The following statement is particularly apt to the situation: "The fundamental fact about metals and indeed all materials, is that they are much weaker than they should be. By this, we mean that if the stress required to cause a given plane of atoms to slip past a neighboring plane is calculated from basic atomic and Solid State Theory, the resulting number is some 1000 times too large to be accounted for by errors in approximations or assumptions. We know now that this is due to dislocations, and we even have a fair understanding of the details of the process by which dislocations make a crystal weak. An intriguing possibility which suggests itself, results from the discovery of very minute metallic crystals which are apparently free of dislocations and which have a strength approaching the ideal value for a perfect crystal." Here we have an extraordinary reversal of the situation. The actual energy for breakage is only one-thousandth the theoretical instead of 1000 times as given by Taggart. But the theoretical energy presented by Solid State Theory is the binding energy between atoms (or ions) in a crystal lattice. This is the kind of energy envisaged by Kick's law. The surface energy or the other hand corresponds to Rittinger's law. Comparison of theoretical with actual, on the basis of surface or on the basis of Rittinger's law, seems to present an absurdity; yet Rittinger's law is confirmed by an impressive array of experimental evidence. Comparison of theoretical and actual on the basis of Solid State Theory or, in other words, on the basis of Kick's law seems reasonable; yet there is not a scrap of evidence to verify Kick's law. The situation appears paradoxical, but the developments in the next section of this paper show that the paradox is a hint to a strange turn of events. ENERGY-WEIGHT FRACTION FUNCTION charles3 has presented a final equation showing the relation of energy consumed in comminution to size of product n{-1) a-n + 1 E is energy, C is proportionality constant, a and n are constants and k is the coarsest size in the ground product (size modulus). In the course of study of a large amount of experimental evidence, Charles discovered that in the general case, a-n + 1 approximated zero. For some reason, a and n differed only by unity. But if a—n + 1 = 0 within experimental error, then it is obvious that Eq. 1 states that it requires an infinite amount of energy to grind any sample to any size. This is a case where nature gives an absurd answer to a man-made mathematical equation, hence something is wrong with the equation. An adjustment must be made to fit the equation with experience. Activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys have been dctermined by equilibrating mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide at known oxygen Pressures in a thermobalance at 1300°C. Conzpositions and iron activities of the oxide phase at equilibrium are known from previous work, and compositions of the Fe-Pt alloy phase formed at equilibrium were detcvt?zined from the observed weight changes of the samples. The activity curve obtained shows a strow negative deviation from Raoult's law. THE present investigation was undertaken as part of a research program dealing with phase equilibrium relations existing among the oxides of iron and titanium at 1300°C. At low oxygen pressures of the gas phase in equilibrium with these oxides, the iron activity of the system is high, and considerable alloying of iron with the platinum used as a container material takes place. Thermodynamic data for Fe-Pt alloys at 1300°C are needed in order to evaluate quantitatively the extent of such reactions. Larson and chipmanlhave determined activities of iron in Fe-Pt alloys at 1550°C by equilibrating platinum metal with CaO-iron oxide-SiOzmelts in which the iron activities were known. Compositions of the resulting Fe-Pt alloys were determined by chemical analysis. Mundiath and Gerassimov2 have studied thermodynamic properties of Fe-Pt alloys by electromotive force measurements in the temperature range 550" to 1000°C. The experimental method used in the present investigation is a slight modification of that used by Grube and Ratsch3 in studies of NiCr-alloys. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) General. Mixtures of platinum metal and iron oxide were equilibrated at 1300°C in atmospheres of known oxygzn przssures, and the course of the reactions was followed by measuring the weight changes of the mixtures. The principles involved in the derivation of composition-activity relations from these measurements are illustrated by the composition triangle for the system Fe-FeZO3-Pt shown in Fig. 1. Take as an example a mixture of FeZO3 (hematite) and platinum such that the total composition is represented by point T. If this mixture is heated to 1300c in air (poz = 0.21 atm) and the oxygen pressure is then reduced gradually, the oxygen content of the oxide phase decreases and increasing amounts of iron enter the metal phase. As the oxide phase and the metal phase for all practical purposes are insoluble in each other, their compositions are represented by points moving toward Fe along the joins Fe-Fe,03 and Fe-Pt, respectively. The total composition of the mixture during this process also changes, but only with respect to oxygen content, because the vapor pressures of iron and platinum are negligible at 1300°C. Hence the change in total composition is described by a straight line (constant Fe/Pt ratio) radiating from the 0 apex of the composition triangle Fe-Pt-0, of which the triangle in Fig. 1 is a part. Only one such line ("oxygen reaction line", T-T",) is shown in Fig. 1. The total composition of the alloy-iron oxide mixture at any instant must, in addition, be located on the straight line (conjugation line) connecting the two points representing the compositions of the two coexisting phases. It therefore follows that the total composition of the mixture at any instant is represented by the point of intersection between the conjugation line and the oxygen reaction line. An example of the situation prevailing at a chosen oxygen pressure, po2, is shown in Fig. 1 by points a' (alloy composition), b' (oxide composition) and T' (total composition). Point b' is known from the work of Darken and Gurry,4 and point T' is experimentally determined by the observed weight change of the mixture (distance T-T). Hence, point a', the composition of the alloy, is determined from the above data as the intersection between the join Pt-Fe and the extension of the straight line bl-7'. was investigated by reacting thin discs of calcium oxide with gas mixtures of CO2, CO, and Son. Its value was 19,300 * 300 cal independent of temperature in this range. No solid solubility of sulfur in calcium oxide was detected within the limits of the experimental method and it is estimated to be below 0.025 pct by weight. The importance of lime in desulfurization is well-established but complete information on the pure phase equilibrium: CaO + 1/2 s2 = CaS + +02 [11 is not yet available. The goal of this work was to evaluate solid solubility of CaS in CaO and to determine the free-energy change associated with Reaction [I] at temperatures of 1400" to 1650°C. The equilibrium constant for Reaction [1] can be written: It is convenient to rewrite Eq. [2] in the form: where A = {Ps /PqJ1'2 has been referred to' as the "sulfurizing power' of a gas mixture. In this work, thin discs of CaO were suspended in a vertical tube furnace and exposed to CO + CO2 + SOz gas mixtures having known values of A. The samples were then analyzed for sulfur. As expected, X-ray diffraction confirmed that CaS was the only sulfur-bearing phase formed at the relatively low oxygen pressures used. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Reagent-grade CaCO3 was pressed in a 3/8-in.-diam pill die and prefired in air to produce CaO discs weighing between 0.004 and 0.01 g. Several discs were used to provide a suitable weight for chemical analysis while maintaining a large surface area to react with gas mixtures. These were placed in a platinum mesh basket and suspended in the gas stream in the hot zone of a vertical tube furnace. Desired gas mixtures were prepared from cp grade CO and CO2 and anhydrous grade SO2. The method of soap bubble displacement was used to calibrate capillary flow meters. While this gave excellent results with CO and Con, some problems with bubble insta- bility and soap film "drag" arose with the use of SO2 at low flow rates. Hence, frequent sampling and analysis of gas mixtures was carried out to insure proper control of the ingoing SOZ. The furnace used for gas:solid equilibration was a vertical mullite tube externally wound with 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh wire having a diameter of 0.028 in. An inner tube of $ in. ID served as the reaction chamber having Pyrex ground joints sealed to the mullite to provide gas-tight connections at top and bottom. A Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple was inserted into a protection tube adjacent to the sample basket to measure sample temperature during a run. Constant-temperature control to 2C was observed at any desired set point within the range of this investigation. This was accomplished by a control thermocouple imbedded in the furnace windings which served to actuate an electronic controller wired for high-low operation. The sulfur analyses of the solid samples were carried out using a stoichiometric combustion technique based on the method of Fincham and Richardson. Some analyses were done using a modified evolution method3 but these were used primarily to check the results of the combustion method. The results were in good agreement but the combustion technique of-ferred an advantage in economy of time and material. CALCULATION OF GAS EQUILIBRIA Heating a given mixture of CO + CO + SO2 to high temperatures gives rise to a large number of product species. The details of calculating the partial pressures of these products of interaction and dissociation can be found in several references4,5 and need not be repeated here. The thermodynamic data selected for the major species in the gas mixtures are shown in Table I. Equilibrium constants from these reactions were combined with oxygen, carbon, and sulfur balances and a computer program written to facilitate the calculations. Some early difficulties in reproducing experimental results were finally traced to the effect of atmospheric pressure changes. No reference to consideration of this question had been found in the

IN a previous study1 of the effect of heating com-mercial titanium in air on its subsequent friction coefficient against other metals, as well as itself, it was found that the friction coefficient markedly decreased from a value of about 0.7 to about 0.3. A tentative explanation was given that surfaces normally produced at room temperature are not contaminated sufficiently to prevent seizing or welding of the titanium to the softer mating metals. The latter tend to cleanse themselves during rubbing over the harder titanium. It was thought that the lack of a contaminant protective film on the titanium was due to the high solubility of titanium for oxygen and nitrogen and hence an inability to form a contaminant oxide or nitride. This explanation requires the ratio of the surface absorption rate to the diffusion rate to become much lower at room temperature than it is at high temperatures. In order to check the phenomenon further, commercial titanium specimens were nitrided or oxidized at 800°C for 20 hr in flows of prepurified N2 and 01, respectively, at about 1/2 in. H2O above atmospheric pressure. Friction runs were made in argon using a freshly cut copper hemisphere (cut in argon) on surfaces cut successively into the diffusion layers in the titanium (cut in argon) using the techniques described in a previous publication.' DPH values (100 gram load) were made as a function of depth into the diffusion layer using a Tukon tester. Also, micrographs were taken at separate cross sections to indicate the diffusion layers. The results obtained are presented in Figs. 1 and 2, which show the "static" friction coefficient vs hardness for the nitrided and oxidized specimens, respectively. A separate measurement of the friction coefficient of clean copper vs iodide titanium also was made. From results reported in the literature' giving the oxygen and nitrogen contents as functions of the hardness, cross plots were made showing the friction coefficients as functions of the amount of interstitial solute. These plots are given in Figs. 3 and 4. From micrographs of the diffusion layers and the phase diagrams, it was deduced that the data in Figs. l through 4 correspond to the single phase a region. The points observed on the compound regions have been excluded from the figures. It is apparent that nitrogen or oxygen in solution in the a titanium markedly affects the friction coefficient against a softer mating metal. Discussion of Results These results are extremely interesting from both a practical and theoretical viewpoint. The theoretical implications will be discussed first. According to Bowden, the friction coefficient should be given to a good approximation by the relation where a is the fraction of contact area that has welded, a is the shear strength of weaker component, and H is the hardness of softer component. Using this relation alone, it is difficult to understand the results because none of the terms should be affected by a variation in the oxygen or nitrogen content of the harder and stronger metal, titanium. Even if the ratio of S/H for titanium is used in Eq. 1, the ratio has been shown to be independent of oxy-gen or nitrogen content.' If a more rigorous equa-tion is used combining Eq. 1 and a result given pre-viously" for the case where welding is absent, then the relation obtained is µ = a S/H + (1-a) a W aß/H where a is constant and Waß is the work of adhesion between the two metals comprising the friction couple. This relation states that if a is less than 1/2 or so, variation in the work of adhesion Waß between copper and the titanium should affect the friction coefficient markedly. It is reasonable to expect that the work of adhesion will depend on the oxygen or nitrogen content of the titanium. Nowadays, there are some new requirements for the supermarket floors. The floors are loaded by high point- and moving-loads. In spite of this fact, it is necessary to ensure the stiffness of the floor and the stiffness of its support. When pile foundations are designed in the case of weak soil, the piles are recommended under the foundations of the supermarket and also under the floor layers. The example of foundation of a typical supermarket located on long­standing municipal dumping ground is presented. Indirect foundation - CFA piles, 0.5 m in diameter and 4.5 to 20.0 m long, was de­signed. Fifteen trial loading tests were carried out.

An incremental analysis based stope design optimization method was developed at Exodus, an underground project located 30 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Traditional underground stope design methods, by manually drawing stope shapes, are typically very time-consuming and lacking of consistency and accuracy. For quick reserve calculation and economic analysis, a new method named '3D Incremental Analysis based Stope Optimization' was created for mine wide stope designs at Exodus. With this unique but practical method, multiple options of mine designs were completed within a short period time, which allowed us to select the optimal cutoff grade and best stope design option for the project.

With implementation of stringent environmental regulations, ultra clean coal technology development programs have gained significant importance worldwide. As far as Indian scenario is concerned, most of the coals present in India are of drift origin and low grade, containing high mineral matter varying from 15% to greater than 50%. The inorganic or ash constituents of Indian coals are finely disseminated through the organic or carbonaceous constituents so, that commonly used physical beneficiation techniques are of only limited value in affecting separation. Chemical processes involve addition of chemicals, which react with the mineral matter and allow its easy removal. The present study envisages the effect of aqueous alkali leaching followed by acid washing on the removal of mineral matter from two different captive coals of Tata Steel at elevated temperature and pressure. The experiments are conducted at desired conditions using a bench scale pressure reactor set up having proper data acquisition and control system. The research study revealed, that it is possible to reduce the ash content up to 70% by this method. The alkali content of the product clean coal does not increase whereas the silica and alumina content reduces by nearly 58% and 62% respectively. Significant reduction in the phosphorus content is observed after the acid treatment. The crucible swelling number of the feed coal improves after the treatment. The mechanism of demineralisation was evaluated by analyzing the coal samples before and after the alkali and acid treatment using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Because of the acidic nature of the silicates and aluminates, they dissolve into the NaOH solution and form sodalite. Sodalite is partially soluble in the alkali solution. The hydrates formed during alkali treatment are partially removed due to acid wash. This study in overall provides an insight into possible alternative methods of beneficiation for removal of ash from high ash Indian coals.

A partir del año 1995 se le reconoció como el mayor productor de oro a través de un programa de exploración en la Formación volcánica Calipuy. Posteriormente, el yacimiento fue visitado por variosgeólogos que postularon diferentes modelos genéticos del yacimiento para así estimar su potencial económico -en tanto se incrementaron los datos geológicos del yacimiento. Por ello, el texto presenta el modelo genético de Tres Cruces, como el más adecuado, aunque la evaluación de su potencial econornica está aún en progreso."

This paper describes of processing tests of 8 flotation concentrates containing precious and base metals by pressure oxidation (POX) method. Concentrates 1 and 2 were gold-copper concentrates. Zinc and silver were by-products in these concentrates. These concentrates were processed by POX with following cyanidation of POX solid residues, copper solvent extraction and zinc carbonate precipitation. The recoveries of gold, copper, silver and zinc from these concentrate were 98, 99, 30 and 99%, respectively. Concentrates 3 and 4 were lead-zinc concentrates. Silver was by-product in concentrate 3. Gold, silver and copper were by-products in concentrate 4. Concentrate 3 was processed by POX with following reduction smelting of POX cakes for primary lead recovery and zinc carbonate precipitation from POX solution. The recoveries of lead and silver into ingot were 96 and 98%, respectively. The recovery of zinc was 99%. Concentrate 4 was processed by POX with following zinc carbonate precipitation and reduction smelting of POX cakes. Copper was precipitated from the POX solution using sodium sulphide prior zinc precipitation. The recovery of zinc into carbonate concentrate was 99%. The recoveries of lead, gold and silver into lead bullion were 95, 99 and 98% respectively. The recovery of copper into sulphide concentrate was 99%. Concentrate 5 was gold-pyrite concentrate, and concentrates 6-8 were double refractory gold-arsenopyrite concentrates. Silver was by-product in these concentrates. These concentrates processed by POX and CIL. The recovery of gold from concentrate 5 was 98%, and from concentrates 6-8 was 85-90. Low gold recovery from concentrates 6-8 was associated with preg-robbing factor. The recovery of silver from gold-sulphide concentrates did not exceed 10-20%. The low silver recovery was associated with argentojarosite formation that is resistant to cyanidation. The flowsheets for complex processing of precious and base metals sulphide flotation concentrates based on this test work results were proposed.

In a conventional zinc refinery plant, zinc concentrates were roasted at 950°C. The calcine was ground and leached in a series of leaching vessels using sulfuric acid. The pH in the first leaching vessel was maintained at 2.5, while the pH of the solution exiting the last vessel was about 5.4. The leached residue typically contained (in percent) 0.1 Ag, 0.2 As, 0.7 Cd, 2 Cu, 15 Fe, 10 Pb, and 15 Zn, and it was classified as hazardous material according to the EP-toxicity test. In order to make the residue non-hazardous, and to recover most of the metal values from the residue, a brine leach process was developed. The process consisted of leaching the zinc leach residue in CaCI, brine solution at pH 2 for 1 hour at 90°C. Silver extraction was about 95 percent, while lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, and iron extractions were about 80, 50, 50, 30, and less than 0.5 percent, respectively. More extreme conditions of acidity could have been used in the leaching stage to increase zinc dissolution, but iron dissolution would have significantly increased which would have complicated subsequent recovery steps. The leached and washed residue passed the EP-toxicity leach test and could be disposed as non-hazardous. Silver, copper, and lead in the leach solution were recovered by zinc cementation, while zinc and cadmium were recovered by sulfide precipitation. The resulting solution can be recycled in the process after magnesium precipitation.

The platinum group metals (PGMs) palladium, platinum, and rhodium represent the key materials for automotive exhaust gas treatment. Since there are currently no adequate alternatives, the importance of these metals for the automotive industry is steadily rising. The high value of PGMs in spent catalysts justifies their recycling. The state-of the-art technology is to melt the ceramic carrier and collect the precious fraction in a liquid metal bath. As the feed material has quite high melting points, huge amounts of energy are required for this process. Hydrometallurgical treatments of the spent catalysts offer the possibility to recycle the PGMs with less energy and time demands. Moreover, automotive catalysts contain further valuable materials to improve the exhaust gas treatment. These compounds, like cerium oxide, cannot be recovered in pyrometallurgical processes. This paper deals with a special process that uses hydrometallurgical principles to recycle the valuable metal fraction from spent automotive catalytic converters. Hydrochloric acid in combination with hydrogen peroxide is used as leaching agent. This combination selectively dissolves the PGMs and the cerium, which can be recovered in separate steps. As the leaching solution is regenerated and reused, wastewater generation is minimized. Furthermore, the process residues constitute potential byproducts.

Nesse trabalho estudou-se o retardo na cinética de amaciamento estático do aço inoxidável austenitico ASTM F-1586 (ISO 5832-9) usado na confecção de implantes ortopédicos, por meio de ensaios de torção a quente isotérmico em duplo passe. Inicialmente as amostras foram aquecidas por indução até a temperatura de 1250 oC e mantidas por 300 s para solubilização, em seguida resfriadas até a temperatura de deformação (Tdef), que variou de 1000 a 1200 oC, com passes de deformações de ε1 = ε2 = 0,30, taxa de deformação de 1,0 s-1 e tempo entre passes (tp) variando entre 0,1 – 1800 s, simulando um processo de forjamento a quente industrial de um dispositivo ortopédico. Os resultados da simulação física do processamento termomecânico indicaram que 60 % do amaciamento dá-se por recuperação estática (SRV), com moderado valor de energia de falha de empilhamento (γEFE ~ 69 mJ/m2) do aço e tempo de encubação pra iniciar a recristalização estática (SRX) maior que 10 s abaixo de 1100 oC com formação de patamares nas curvas de amaciamento Xs vs tp, indicando atraso na cinética de recristalização estática (SRX) resultante do efeito dos precipitados da fase Z (NbCrN) induzidos por deformação nos contornos dos grãos austeniticos.

The preeipitation of dissolved lead from a strong brine by metallic iron is a chemically controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is insensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature.INTRODUCTIONLead and silver sulphates can be extracted from electrolytic zinc plant tailings, or residues, by leaching with strong brine solutions, the lead and silver going into solution as complex chlorides. One of the methods which can then be used to recover the dissolved lead and silver is to precipitate them with metallic iron. The deposition reactions which take place are of the type Pb++ Fe - Fe++ Pb............ (a)To fit such a method of precipitation successfully into a practical flowsheet it is necessary to have some knowledge of the kinetics of the various reactions, Le. to know how the precipitation rates vary with temperature, brine and metal concentrations, and so on. Reaction rates are also needed to design suitable precipitation vessels. However, when examining the possibility of using a brine leaching process to extract the lead and silver from the residue produced at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, it was found that, although the use of metallic iron to recover lead and silver from the pregnant brine had been reported by Ralston (1924) and by TrumbulI, Hardiek and Lawford (1948), very little was known about the precipitation reactions.
