Flotation behavior, of magnesite and dolomite pure minerals was studied separately. Rice bran oil (a source of fatty acid ) was used as a collector for both minerals . The aim of this study is to find a separating zone in the flotation of these pure minerals to be used in the separation of their mixture. Factors affecting the flotation process, such as pH and collector, were studied. It was found that magnesite can be separated, from its mixture with dolomite, in the pH range of 5-7. At this pH range flotation recovery of dolomite reaches~98% where magnesite reaches ~20% only. Besides, the effect of collector concentration on the flotation shows that the separation of magnesite from dolomite is feasible at a collector concentration of 3x10-4 M. At such concentration, dolomite recovery reaches ~98%, where magnesite reaches 25%. The differences in the flotation behavior of dolomite and magnesite were investigated by studying the adsorption isotherms of rice bran oil on magnesite and dolomite surfaces. The adsorption study indicates that while there is an excessive adsorption on dolomite surface, the adsorption density on magnesite was restricted to be lower than monolayer capacity. The adsorption behavior of dolomite and magnesite was discussed in the light of their solubility and crystal structure. It was found that due to the higher solubility of dolomite than magnesite, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions are available and more reactive on dolomite surface increasing collector adsorption. In addition, it was indicated that dolomite mineral has a crystal lattice structure more compatible to the geometry of the fatty acid carboxylic group than magnesite. However, the adsorption of collector on dolomite surface is more compact and more regular than on magnesite surface.

Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

Information on volatilities is presented. The conclusion is reached that explosive pressures are significantly enhanced by inclusion of these materials.

Load-haul dump vehicles (LHDs) are used to move waste rock and ore in underground mining operations. The LHD is designed for bi-directional operation and the driver sits sideways to the direction of travel. LHD operators have higher reports of low back pain and neck discomfort than other mobile equipment operators who do not sit sideways in the vehicle, but are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV)1. Exposure to WBV is linked with reports of lower-back pain, neck problems and spinal degeneration2,3. Static sitting postures, sitting with the neck and back twisted, and sitting with the back in an unsupported posture are also linked with an increased risk of developing back pain4. The objective of this study was to determine typical vibration exposure levels and driving postures for LHD operators. Methods Whole-body vibration exposure was measured at the seat-pan, in accordance with the ISO 2631-1 standard5, on seven LHD vehicles with a 10 yard bucket haulage capacity. Vibration data were recorded with a Biometrics™ DataLog II (P3X8) and stored on a 128 Mb Simpletech™ multimedia card. Comparisons were made to the ISO 2631-1 Health Guidance Caution Zone (HGCZ) in order to determine potential injury risk. Operator posture was monitored with three digital video cameras which were secured inside each operator’s cab to the top left corner, top right corner and back right corner. Reflective tape was placed on each driver’s shoulders, head, and back in several locations and in several locations on the vehicle seat in order to aid in posture coding. Posture coding was performed with 3DMatch v4.50 multiple video view analysis feature. Vibration measurement and posture recording occurred simultaneously for 60 minutes while the LHD operator performed typical duties. Results and Discussion Results indicate LHD operators may be exposed to whole-body vibration levels putting them at risk for injury (Table 1). According to ISO 2631-1 the frequency weighted acceleration values corresponding to the lower and upper limits of the HGCZ (for an 8 hr exposure duration) are 0.45 and 0.90 m/s2 respectively5. Six of the seven vehicles showed exposure levels within the HGCZ defined for 8 hours. Preliminary video analysis indicated LHD operators were exposed to potentially harmful levels of WBV while adopting asymmetric postures (Table 2). For example, one LHD operator (Figure 1) worked with his neck twisted greater than 40 degrees for 93 % of a 60 minute work cycle. According to the Swedish National Work Injury Criteria, neck rotation should be less than 15 degrees if the motion is required for greater than 80% of the work time6. The current phase of office development at Canary Wharf in the London Docklands includes twelve multi-storey buildings varying from eighteen to forty stories in height. The area of Canary Wharf South comprises five multi-storey buildings with low level in fill podium and garden areas. Three of these multi-storey buildings have "pile-cap" designs where the entire building load is applied to the piles. The remaining two buildings have "piled-raft" designs where allowance is made in the design for part of the building load to be transferred to the raft formation. Using a piled-raft design approach has enabled savings to be made on the number of piles used below the raft. This paper describes the calibration analysis undertaken to validate the design method. The ground conditions at the Canary Wharf site are typically fill and recent gravel deposits over the overconsolidated clay and sand of the Lambeth Group. Below these strata is the Thanet Sand. The Lambeth Group provided the founding layer for the raft and contributed to the pile shaft resistance. The Thanet Sand stratum provided the bearing layer for the 1.5m diameter base grouted bored piles. The piled-raft design required an assessment of the building load transfer through the raft to the formation layer. This load transfer led to significant increases in effective stress in the soil below the raft and thence a corresponding increased the capacity of the piles. This interaction of the raft with the prepared formation contributed to between 27% and 45% increase in total vertical load carrying capacity of the piled-raft substructure compared with the pile-cap design method. The development of the piled-raft design was carried out in three main phases: ? Development of the approach and validation analyses. ? Design work on various schemes resulting in detailed design packages. ? Validation analyses using full 3D finite element analysis (presented herein). The validation of the piled-raft design approach was initially carried out against published case histories for piled-raft interaction. To improve on the validation work a full 3D finite element analysis of a simplified pile raft and superstructure (which contributes stiffness to the raft) was undertaken; the analysis included only a quarter of the structure due to assumed symmetry of the structure and vertical loading. This 3D validation analysis is presented herein. The analysis was carried out using the Oasys LS-DYNA finite element program. Prior to carrying out the analysis of the piled-raft an initial finite element analysis was carried out to back analyse a fully instrumented field pile test providing accurate modelling of a single pile performance. This back analysis allowed confidence in the soil parameters used in the 3D model; comparisons of shaft and base resistances between the pile test and the FE model calculations for the single pile are presented. The parameters provided in this work were then carried into the full 3D model of the piled-raft. The 3D model of the piled-raft structure included 18 piles (12 full piles and 6 half piles on an axis of symmetry of the model).

A new process was studied at large laboratory scale at Université Libre de Bruxelles, under contract with Metallurgie Hoboken-Overpelt. A two cathodes (1m long ; 0.2 m high) channel cell was used at 2000 A/m2, with an electrolyte flow rate up to 1.8 m/sec. The main results may be summarized as follows : cathodes are electro¬refined grade in analysis ; metallographic structure and surface roughness are kept under control up to 1.3 cm (one side deposits) ; silver in cathode is controlled by CI and Br ions in solution ; organics must be used at very low concentrations (in the range of 0.1 mg/1, with a consumption of about 0.01 mg/lh).

This report describes the total effort that went into developing environmental test criteria for general mine instrumentation. The project was a two-phase effort. Phase I consisted of research and mine visits to develop an environmental profile for mine instrumentation. The profile was translated into general requirements and then into test requirements. A review of existing government and commercial specifications was performed to determine if they matched mine instrumentation test requirements. Finally, a set of environmental test procedures was developed for the testing of mine instrumentation. Phase II consisted of selecting and purchasing sample mine instrumentation and subjecting them to the previously developed tests. The purpose was twofold: (1) to evaluate the criteria developed for use as an instrumentation test document and (2) to determine the effects of the various criteria on a representative sample of both proven and newly developed instrumentation. The test criteria were then modified, based on the results of the testing, and are listed therein.

Britannia metal is a white alloy consisting primarily of tin and antimony, the tin greatly predominating. The alloy usually contains a small amount of copper and occasionally very small amounts of one or two other metals, such as bismuth, zinc, and lead. It is capable of being cold-rolled, it takes a high polish, and it is fairly noncorrosive; properties which make it a popular metal for many household and traveling utensils. Britannia metal is similar in many respects to pewter and has largely replaced pewter in the arts, but it should not be confused with that alloy, because pewter is essentially a tin-lead alloy, while Britannia is a tin-antimony alloy. In view of the fact that so little has been published concerning Britannia metal, the authors feel justified in presenting the results of their investigation, particularly since the behavior of this alloy under cold rolling and heat treatment differs so greatly from that of other metals and alloys. The old craftsman, engaged in the making of ornaments or tableware, heated the cold-rolled sheet metal or his finished product to a straw color corresponding to about 375" I?., claiming to produce thereby a harder and more rigid article. The fact that possibly led him to this heating was that a reheated article or sheet made from Britannia metal has a distinct metallic ring when struck a sharp blow, whereas an unheated article or sheet has a leady, dead note. No doubt he has associated the metallic ring with a greater rigidity and strength, and justly so, as will be seen later. The approximate analysis of the metal we investigated was 91 Sn, 7 Sb, 2 Cu, and the molten metal was bottom-poured into an iron mold yielding an ingot 7 3/4 in. wide by 11 in. long and % in. thick, the casting temperature being 800" F. The ingot was cold-rolled to a sheet 0.032 in. thick, sufficiently large samples for experimental purposes being cut from the sheet at intermediate stages. The samples were all tested for hardness with scleroscope and Brine11 machine, then heated to 212" F. for 30 min., and again tested after cooling to room temperature. H. M. BOYLSTON, Cambridge, Mass.-I would first like to ask what machine Capt. Bellis used to make his tests on impact strength. I have made some tests with the Charpy impact machine, the specimen being supported at both ends and nicked in the middle, and, find that the results do not always agree with those obtained by the Izod and other machines. I would also like to ask what effect the composition and heat treatment of the tool steel had on the drilling of his rifle barrels, as compared, with the heat treatment of the steel itself? I notice that the analysis of the composition of steel used shows sulphur 0.050 and phosphorus 0.065; I should like to ask how those high limits of sulphur and phosphorus came to be allowed? I have some data which lead me to feel pretty certain that those high limits make for very unsafe steel in rifle barrels. It has never been explained to the satisfaction of all of us, why the manganese is so high: 1.22 per cent. I believe several reasons have been stated; among them, that it is high in order to compensate for the high sulphur, and also to increase the elastic limit and improve other physical properties of steel. Lastly, I wish to ask whether Capt. Bellis has tried any different methods of heat-treating his steel rifle barrels? Apparently these were all heat-treated before machining; has he had any experience with heat-treatment after machining, especially after drilling? Those questions may seem somewhat outside of the range of this -paper, but they are important, and if Captain Bellis can give us any information, it will be very helpful. Dr. J. A. MATHEWS,* Syracuse, N. Y.-The same subject was discussed here last year, and the earlier papers by Dr. Carle Hayward seem to indicate that nothing was gained by the length of time of 'tempering. (It should be borne in mind that his results were based upon electrical and magnetic measurements and not upon tensile tests.) That idea has been accepted as gospel by steel workers, until late years, and particu-larly in connection with alloy steels, on which there is no question that the effect of time of tempering is very marked.

THE present list of problems relating to the physical chemistry of steelmaking has been prepared by the Committee on the Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, from answers to a questionnaire Submitted to a number of metallurgists engaged in both industrial and educational work throughout the United States. The purpose of the project is to make available to research laboratories a list of problems, all reduced to their simplest terms, the solution of which would aid in creating a better understanding of the steelmaking process. It is not intended to restrict the problems to practical steelmaking. The list also includes the study of the properties, and their correlation, as well as the physical and chemical reactions, of all Substances that occur or that may be in any way associated with steelmaking operations, Such as metallic substances, refractories, nonmetallic inclusions, and the constituents of slags. Many of the problems can be carried out in university or other research laboratories. Others may be most successfully attacked by cooperation of the research men with the operating personnel. It is the Committee's earnest wish that this cooperation be fostered. It is requested that investigators who are working on any of the problems listed and who anticipate future publication of their results, notify the Secretary of the Committee that such investigation is in progress. Suggested additions to the present list are also requested. The Committee is undertaking to act as a clearing house for information regarding the topics in this field that are being actually studied. Interested persons are invited to correspond with the Secretary. I. Data involved in the state of equilibrium for the various systems (laboratory work, almost entirely). A. (written discussion ?).-The effect of reducing gases on hot solid copper has been known for many years in the copper industry, and precautions taken to guard against it in the general practice in copper heating and annealing. In view of the statement that Bengough and Hill, in 1910, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gas within the copper itself, it is interesting to note that in Harper's Magazine for April, 1904, an article, "Life and Diseases of Metals," by Professor Heyn, illustrated the effect of reducing gases on copper by a photograph, which is shown in Fig. 1. This he entitled "Copper burst asunder by disease." After referring to the effect of hydrogen on steel, he makes the following remark: "Similar symptoms of poisoning, caused by hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen (as gas for lighting purposes), are apparent in copper when exposed to red heat. Not every kind of .copper is susceptible to this poisoning in equal degree. Copper per-fectly free of cuprous oxide is entirely exempt from poisoning. Most of the various coppers of commerce, however, contain cuprous oxide, formed during the smelting process while exposed to atmospheric influences. In such coppers, containing cuprous oxide, hydrogen causes a terrible disease on the copper being heated red hot. The copper bursts asunder and is permeated by cracks. This disease is practically incurable and can be eradicated by resmelting only. The results work destructively according to the amount of cuprous oxide contained in the copper." It must have been evident to Professor Heyn, as it was to us on reading this article, that the bursting asunder of the copper was clue to the formation of steam. Practical copper heaters have known for many years that it was quite possible to produce blisters, or large gas holes, in the interior of copper plates or bars by heating to a high temperature in reducing gases. These facts, of course, do not detract from the value of the study of the action of hydrogen gas that has been made by Mr. Pilling, but simply illustrate that the practical effect of reducing gases on furnace-refined copper has long been a troublesome factor in the heating or annealing of that metal.

[During the last few years, the necessity for development work has been generally recognized by executives throughout the oil industry, resulting in greatly accelerated progress and the adoption of many noteworthy improvements in refining methods and equipment. Several years ago, the Associated Oil Co. decided to improve distillation methods with the object of reducing refining costs. This extremely interesting work was entrusted to the writer, and W. S. James, now Chief of Research for Studebaker Corpn. of America, was selected as the principal collaborator. The latter contributed much during his two years with the Associated Oil Co., to the development work that has followed. The writer extends to the Associated Oil Co. his appreciation for permission to disclose the details of distilling equipment. In petroleum refining the principal requisites of good economics are the separation of high-priced distillates from those of lower price; maxi-mum yield of any desired distillate; lowest capital investment in refining equipment; lowest cost of operation and maintenance, and the best adaptability and flexibility of the same refinery equipment for handling crudes of widely varying characteristics. The first two items mentioned, separation and yields of distillates are determined by efficiency of fractionating equipment,. Discussion in this paper is chiefly concerned with oil-heating equipment, combustion and furl economy. It has long been well known that velocity plays a very important part in all heat transfer systems. Any betterment in specific transfer. rates in such systems must. always involve velocity. Realizing this fact, IV decided to adopt as a basic principle, the employment of energy to impart velocity required for high transfer rates through a heating diaphragm, and our method of modernizing obsolete shell stills is founded on this principle. Mechanical energy is usually cheap and its rational rspcntliture is returned in the form of greatly increased heat transfer rates, on both oil and gas sides of the sheet. Certainly there is nothing new in this principle, the only novelty being that of our peculiar method of application On the oil side (Fig. I) use is made of a centrifugal pump to jet the oil against the heated sheet thereby creating a high velocity sheet flow over the entire fired area. QUANTITATIVE knowledge of the time element involved in austenite transformation in a particular steel provides a sound basis for understanding and planning heat-treatment. Such knowledge is conveniently obtained by measurement of austenite transformation as it occurs at each of a series of temperature levels. The results of these measurements usually are summarized in the form of the now familiar isothermal transformation diagram (I-T diagram, TTT diagram, or S-curve). Although a considerable number of such diagrams already have appeared in the literature, there remain many compositions of commercial importance for which no I-T diagram is available. The diagram for many such steels may be predicted from published data with sufficient accuracy for most practical purposes, but for others no satisfactory prediction can be made because the effect on austenite transformation of one or more of the important alloying elements present is not well enough known. Such a steel is Nitralloy, Type 135-Modified, which, containing about 1.25 per cent aluminum, differs from any whose I-T diagram has been published. This paper presents results of a study of the isothermal transformation behavior of a sample from a commercial heat of this aluminum-chromium-molybdenum steel, together with pertinent supplementary data including the equilibrium transformation temperatures (Ae3 and Ae1), the temperature range of martensite formation, and the end-quench hardenability. These data are directly applicable to the heat-treatment of this type of steel and are of interest in revealing some of the fundamental effects of aluminum as an alloying element in steel. MATERIAL All specimens were prepared from a 13-in. diam bar forged from a 5 by 5-in. billet from a commercial heat made in an electric arc furnace. The composition of the bar was; C, 0.41 per cent: Mn, 0.57: P, 0.016: S, 0.005: Si, 0.24: Ni, 0.17: Cr, i.57: MO, 0.36: Al, 1.26. The forged bar was normalized from 1750°F (955°C) and then tempered for one hour at 1200°F (650°C), this tempering treatment having been given to facilitate the machining of specimens. EQUILIBRIUM TRANSFORMATION TEMPERATURES In hypoeutectoid steel the minimum temperature at which austenite is completely stable, Ae3, and the maximum temperature at which austenite is completely unstable, Ae1, are of great significance in heat-treatment. The object of this investigation was to ascertain the effect of varying percentages of beryllium upon pure copper and the properties of the resultant alloys in their softest condition, the effect of heat hardening on them, and the extents to which these properties could be augmented by different combinations of heat hardening and cold rolling. The data compiled in this paper represent partial results of continuing work done by the writer during the years 1930 and 1931, which was a continuation of the unpublished ground work incepted in the laboratory of the Beryllium Corporation of America by H. B. Pulsifer in the year 1926. A short bibliography on beryllium alloys is appended to this paper. It has, of course, long been known that copper subjected to cold work is hardened and strengthened to a considerable extent; furthermore it had been qualitatively noted in previous experiments that copper-beryllium alloys seemed to take on hardness and strength as the result of cold work at a greater rate even than does plain copper. It was decided therefore to endeavor quantitatively to determine such rate of increase, as also the relative increases by combinations of cold working and heat hardening. The results are summarized in Tables 3, 4 and 5. A preliminary series of experiments had indicated that by an exposure to the heat of 575" F. for 2 1/2 hr. age-hardening of a 2.50 per cent beryllium-copper alloy took place. Slab ingots of nine different beryllium-copper alloys were prepared under identical conditions by means of the addition of a previously prepared 12.5 per cent beryllium-copper alloy to well melted and deoxidized pure copper. The ingots were then reduced by hot rolling to 12 gage (about 0.080 in.). These strips were heated to 1450" F. and quenched in cold water, and thus brought to their softest condition. (See Table 1.) Strips were next "precipitation-hardened" by reheating to a definite temperature. Similar strips to those itemized in Table 1 (which had been quenched from 1450" F.) were reheated for varying periods of time at 575" F. The hardness figures show that a metastable condition, of which the range of stability is dependent entirely upon time at the given temperature, begins to be noted in copper samples containing as little as 0.85 per cent beryllium. Unplanned ore dilution can have severe impact on the economics of a mining operation. The paper discusses and distinguishes between controllable and natural parameters influencing ore dilution, and how it can be minimized in longitudinal mining systems of narrow vein orebodies. It is shown through data of surveyed stope profiles and numerical modelling that unplanned ore dilution is a function of stope design and construction, orebody geometry, and rock mass characteristics.
