"This paper describes the theory, design, building, and testing of the passive magnetic bearing stabilizing system which is the core of the passive magnetic bearing system. The stabilizing system is made up of two large magnetic disks opposing themselves with a stabilizing disk in the center which allows the system to self-locate in a null position without the need for external power sources or sensors. When outside forces act upon the stabilizer, the magnetic fields interact with the stabilizing plate to return the system to its null position. Collaboration between two industry leaders has allowed an actual prototype to be built and tested providing real data to prove out the theory.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic bearing/stabilizer systems have many advantages over conventional mechanical bearing systems. These include near-zero drag losses and no need for lubrication since the rotating elements make no mechanical contact with the stationary elements of the bearing system. However all magnetic bearing systems must contend with a constraint known as Earnshaw’s Theorem in the early 1800’s, this theorem asserts the impossibility of constructing a stable, non-contacting, electrostatic or magnetostatic levitation system using only fixed charges or fixed magnetic poles, such as those produced by permanent magnets. Because of the constraint imposed by Earnshaw’s Theorem virtually all present-day commercial magnetic bearing systems are of the “active” type. That is, they employ electromagnets that are powered by amplifiers the inputs to which come from sensors embedded in the bearing system. These sensors are a part of a feedback loop that operates to keep the levitated rotating parts of the bearing stable and centered. The resulting complexity means that active magnetic bearings are expensive, require periodic maintenance, and continuously consume electrical power to energize their amplifiers and their electromagnets.Passive magnetic bearings are, of course, also subject to the constraints imposed by Earnshaw’s Theorem but they solve this problem in a straightforward and simple way, with only “passive” elements that take advantage of a loophole implicit in the derivation of Earnshaw’s Theorem. This loophole is that Earnshaw’s Theorem as derived applies only to static systems, i.e. an assembly of stationary permanent magnets arranged so as to levitate an object containing other permanent magnets. The theorem can be overcome if dynamic effects are taken into account. In active magnetic bearings the “dynamic effects” involve the afore-mentioned sensors, amplifiers, and electromagnets."

The U.S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Research Center,1 has developed and field tested a spatial, spectral sensor for measuring the thickness of mineral deposits. Knowledge of the dielectric constant of the material is not necessary because the electrical properties of the media are determined automatically along with the thickness or distance measurement. The technology was developed to measure the thickness of coal remaining in the roof and floor of a mine or the thickness of a coal pillar remaining between two mining entries for the purpose of guiding a mining machine. However, field tests have shown the new technique is equally valuable for measuring the thickness of each layer in a multilayer manmade structure such as highway paving or building foundations and the thickness of geological deposits other than coal, such as, salt, granite and sandstone. The noncontacting electromagnetic technique uses spatial modulation created by moving a simple dipole sensor antenna in a direction along each axes to be measured while the complex reflection coefficient is measured at multiple frequencies over a two-to-one bandwidth. The antenna motion imparts spatial modulation to the data and enables frequency domain signal processing to solve the problem of media, target and antenna dispersion. The technique overcomes the problem of multipath reflections from nearby metal structures and avoids the use of radio frequency absorbing material. In its present form the system measures material thickness of zero to over 3 m to within ±2.5 cm accuracy. The system parameters are variable to suit the application but for most applications default values of 40 cm antenna motion with measurements made at 401 frequencies from 0.6 to 1.4 GHz at each of 32 antenna positions with a power level of 0 dBm or less are more than adequate to provide a satisfactory signal-to noise ratio. In the range of 0 to 10 m the system operates in the continuous wave mode and by simply turning off the transmitter for ranges beyond 10 m the problems of time domain processing are entirely avoided. The technique can be implemented with a vector network analyzer, a servo controlled L-band antenna positioner, an IEEE488 bus controller and a process computer. An electronics package designed and constructed to operate in the harsh mining environment and providing 1, 2 or 3 dimensional image presentation is being evaluated as a replacement for the network analyzer. A boemita é importante na preparação de catalisadores, adsorventes, revestimentos, alumina e materiais derivados de alumina quando porosidade e resistência mecânica são desejadas. Sob condições hidrotérmicas foram preparadas boemitas a partir de 3 precursores diferentes: de uma gibsita comercial, e de pseudoboemita fibrilar e de monohidróxido diacetato de alumínio, ambos sintetizados em laboratório. A síntese foi realizada em autoclave mantida à temperatura de 160oC, em diferentes tempos de envelhecimento térmico. Ao final do tempo de síntese, as dispersões foram secas ao ar, à temperatura ambiente. A diferença nos materiais sólidos de partida pode ter alguns efeitos na morfologia final do cristal de boemita, sendo esse o objetivo desse trabalho. A estrutura cristalina dos cristais obtidos foi caracterizada por DRX e a morfologia foi examinada por MEV.

?Wyoming bentonite? has become almost a world-wide trade mark for high quality sodium bentonite. Although bentonite is produced in more than a dozen U.S. states the largest producing area covers Wyoming and adjacent parts of Montana and South Dakota. Bentonite was originally known as Taylorite and later renamed Bentonite by Dr. Sam Knight, the State Geologist of Wyoming. The new name came from the Fort Benton shale member of the Mowry Formation. Bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of the montmorillonite group of minerals. Since bentonite has good ion exchange capabilities, various cat-ions are easily replaced. These cations are usually calcium and sodium; however, magnesium, lithium, potassium, and others can be exchanged. One way of classifying the clay is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium as the dominant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling properties than sodium varieties.

THE geology of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is so familiar to every one interested in mining that I will only note as an introduction that the main producers are mines whose orebodies lie in the Revett or Burke quartzites ; that the known orebodies in the eastern part of the district all lie north of the Osburn fault; that the Prichard formation is quite generally looked upon as being unfavorable for lead deposits ; that the monzonite intrusive mass extending north from Gem to Sunset Peak, and over into Cedar Creek divide, is considered to have been the prime agent in the crea-tion of our orebodies, and that diabase dikes are a quite common feature at most of the properties with which I am familiar. Some of the exceptions to these statements may be mentioned. The Interstate-Callahan mine is considered the exception disproving the alleged relation between large ore-deposits and the Prichard formation, but this property was primarily a zinc producer, with lead secondary, though of sufficient tonnage to be a valuable product. A second interesting occurrence in the Prichard worth calling to your attention is the Jack Waite property, on Tributary Creek, north of Murray. This vein lies at a low horizon in the Prichard forma-tion, and the ore differs essentially from others in the same horizon elsewhere in that it is a clean, medium to coarsely crystalline, lead ore carrying very little zinc, about one ounce silver to ten units lead, and is accom-panied by a clean quartz gangue or vein filling. I believe that quartz was the primary mineral in the fissure, and that the lead ore was deposited in the vein as a replacement of the quartz.

The separation and recovery of copper from cyanide solution has been investigated since the early 1900s. The precipitation of copper using sulfide ion was patented in 1911 by Williamson, published by Leaver & Woolf of the USBM in 1931 and Cyanamid in 1960s. The current practice of sulfide precipitation is used in various processes such as “SART" for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery. The precipitation of copper sulfide requires the pH of the clear solution to be in the range of 4-6. The precipitated copper sulfide can be sold to smelters. Alternatively, copper cyanide can be precipitated from clear solutions in the pH range of 2-3. However, selling copper cyanide is challenging because of its cyanide content. Past work has focused on the use of boiling sulfuric acid to convert copper cyanide to copper sulfate as published by Seracini in 1991. This paper describes a simple process to convert copper cyanide to copper oxide using sodium hydroxide at ambient temperatures. The cuprite can be sold to smelters or used as a feed to an electrowinning circuit to produce copper cathodes. The process provides an effective method to recover copper from cyanide solutions with a lower capital requirement.

Os precipitadores eletrostáticos são equipamentos responsáveis pelo despoeiramento dos gases de processo que atravessam o forno de grelha móvel. O processo de sinterização no forno gera uma grande quantidade de particulado que são retidos por estes equipamentos, portanto têm grande importância no processo da Samarco e para qualidade do ar nas comunidades do entorno. A eficiência dos precipitadores é monitorada através da emissão de particulado no topo das chaminés. Neste estudo foram analisados os fatores elétricos e dimensionais que afetam a eficiência de despoeiramento e, portanto, os mecanismos que recolhem as partículas. Foi também avaliado o balanço de massas do equipamento e a capacidade de coleta de particulado de cada campo do precipitador eletrostático. Desta forma foi realizada a otimização do tempo entre batimentos de placas e ajustes lógicos para a diminuição de entradas de ar falso no precipitador. As ações resultaram em aumento da eficiência do funcionamento do equipamento, com redução do baseline de emissão de particulado. Resultados adicionais foram identificados através da redução de manutenção de válvulas duplas, maior controle operacional.

A DISTINGUISHED engineer, the active head of a large mining company, has said that surveying attains the dignity of a profession only in the hands of a few men-the few who know how to keep notes that will be understood by even a novice without further word of explanation. Of all mine-records, survey notes are perhaps the most important. The maps made from them serve as a working-guide, and as framework for other data ; and when, from any cause, access to underground workings is shut off, the surveyor's record often becomes invaluable. So seldom does a surveyor have a chance to check underground surveys by making a closure, that he is compelled to rely on the precision of each step of his work for the accuracy of the final result. When data are fully recorded on the spot, the notes, even in the hands of second parties, become evidence of the care and precision with which the surveying was done. It is worth a great deal to be able to pick up the work of a former surveyor where it was left o$; and to be able to carry it forward without retracing from the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to describe the survey-note system of a mine now under my direction, in which underground surveys had to be relied upon entirely for the proper division of rich ore-bodies between neighbors, thereby placing a premium on accurate surveying and permanent records. In survey-work, it soon turns out that paper is the least item of expense, and that little is gained by trying to economize note-book space. For many purposes it is best to record notes on cards or loose-leaves, which may be left in the office at the end of the day's work, and need not be carried into the mine again, there to become smeared with grime and grease. Updating the openpit vehicle transportation network has the problem of being time consuming and low precision. To address this problem, a high-precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in openpit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3+C (DeepLabv3+Concat) is presented, and the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3+C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the openpit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicles meeting in openpit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy is proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in openpit mines. At the end of the study, vehicle running simulation was carried out on the road network model using Unity, a 3D visualization simulation software. The high-precision unmanned road network model of openpit mines studied in this work can further promote the construction and development of smart mines by acting as a high-precision map for unmanned vehicles.

Increasingly pelletizing discs are used for the recycling of dust and sludge. The applied pellet feed is highly variable, for example in terms of chemical composition, grain size distribution and raw density. These raw materials related factors lead to a destabilized pelletizing process, which initially must be homogenized through special mixtures, as well as the use of binders or additives. There are many possibilities to reach stringent restriction of material related target factors. On the one hand it is helpful to be flexible by changing the process parameters of the pelletizing disc. On the other hand, it is necessary to use a material-binder-formulation, which leads to a highly stable pelletizing process. The paper deals with an example of the use of agglomerating device, pelletizing disc, to prepare different dusts and sludges for material recycling. These dusts und sludges are mostly generated in metallurgical processes, e.g. sinterplant, blast furnace and steelworks.

"Eicosanoids and cylokines produced by the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) are key mediators for the defensive role this cell plays in neutralizing the inhalation of particulate dusts and foreign microbes. However, these factors are also mediators of inflammation and their uncontrolled release may cause the lung injury and liorotic changes observed in individuals exposed occupationally to mineral dust. In vitro studies have suggested a link between the production of certain eicosanoids and cylokines released from the activated PAM. To this end, we have studied the release of eicosanoids (PGE2, TXB2 and LTB4) and cylokines (IL-1 and TNF) by cultured PAM, obtained from healthy human volunteers by bronchoalveolar lavage under basal culture conditions and following acute exposure to provocative agents such as the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and mineral dusts including silica. Studies were also carried out in the presence of specific cyclooxygenase inhibitors. The addition of LPS (10 µg/ml) to the culture medium produced a significant increase in PAM release of the eicosanoids: PGE2 (3.5 fold over baseline), TXB2 (2.8 fold over baseline) and LTB4 (4 fold over baseline). LPS also elicited a 2.5 fold elevation in IL-1 from these cells and a 9 fold increase in TNF release. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor, ibuprofen, significantly inhibited the LPS-induced rise in PGE2, TXB2 and TNF but had only a modest suppressive effect on IL-1 release. Exposure of these cells to silica dust elicited a similar augmentation in eicosanoid and cylokine release which was neutralized by prior exposure of the cells to ibuprofen. These results suggest that the enhanced production of eicosanoids and cytokines by PAM exposed to endotoxins and/or mineral dusts may be linked and that inhibition of eicosanoid release is linked to the production of TNF. IL-1 release however is not effectively neutralized by cyclooxygenase inhibition.INTRODUCTIONThe initial pulmonary cellular response to inhaled mineral dust involves the elaboration of potent inflammatory mediators from the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (1). These mediators include the eicosanoids (oxygenated metabolites of arachidonic acid) and cytokines (intercellular peptides) which are released into the alveolar space by the interaction of mineral dust with the PAM surface membrane. The eicosanoids and cytokines promote local nonvascular and vascular smooth muscle contractility changes, elicit the recruitment of additional mononuclear cells into the alveolar space, and enhance the activation, growth and differentiation of lung fibroblasts (2). In this study we sought to examine whether eicosanoid release and metabolism are linked to cytokine release when PAM are activated upon exposure to endotoxin or mineral dusts. Modulation of these pathways through inhibitory pharmaceutical agents may help attenuate the Injurious effects caused by a sustained release of these proinftammatory intercellular factors (3). To that end, we have studied the in vitro effects of endotoxin and silica on eicosanoid and cytokine release from cultured PAM obtained from healthy human volunteers."

O acumulo de liquido no cadinho e sua influência no aumento da força hidrostática são as principais causas dessa flutuação.O cadinho é uma parte crucial na operação do alto-forno por muitas razões. No entanto, por ser o local de acumulo de gusa e escória, este deve ter volume suficiente e facilitar uma drenagem sem distúrbios. Por isto, o estado do redutor/combustível, chamado “homem morto” desempenha uma importante função. Este trabalho apresenta uma breve revisão sobre os principais indicadores do estado interno do homem morto no cadinho do alto-forno.

Urea is the most used nitrogen fertilizer around the world being responsible for many environmental problems. Preparation of microcapsules from biodegradable polymer has been reported as a main system to sustain active substances, finding application in different areas. The objective of this work was to sustain urea in nanocomposite microcapsules of poly(3-hidroxybutyrate) (PHB) reinforced with a smectite Brazilian clay in its natural (MMT) and modified (OMMT) form. PHB/MMT and PHB/OMMT microcapsules were obtained by w/o/w emulsion. Characterization were performed by XRD and optical microscopy. Structural and morphological differences observed by XRD and optical microscopy shown that PHB/OMMT microcapsules are smaller than PHB/MMT microcapsules, with average size diameter ranging * 49 μm. Results indicate that PHB/OMMT microcapsules present more defects and fractures than PHB/MMT microcapsules.

This paper describes the results of autoclave testwork where ferric nitrate was hydrolysed in the presence of certain cations and anions and the resulting hematite analyzed for foreign constituents. For the cations Zn++, Ni++, Cu++, and AI+++, selectivity factors of over 107 were found. Magnesium gave 3.106. These factors are calculated as Me/Fe in solution over Me/Fe in the hematite; Me representing the metal in ion added. As-a result of the testwork at Delft University of Technology, BUDELCO (the Netherlands electrolytic zinc producer) ran a series of ferric nitrate hydrolysis tests in the presence of 10 additional trace elements. Impurity levels were prejudiced on Me2 EPHA extraction of iron from their zinc circuit, followed by HNO3 stripping. Good selectivity against base metals was confirmed, but trace elements forming anions (As. Sb) and sulphate were incorporated in the hematite. These BUDELCO results are also presented.

"The collision efficiency for small particles relative to 2D spherical bubbles in a developed turbulent flow field were calculated applying an adopted version of the CPD program FLUENT. The turbulence field was related to bubble size and fluid properties. The results were compared with analytical theory. The turbulence intensity was found to be the most important single parameter for collision efficiency. Effects of boundary layer thickness and particle diameter were discussed. IntroductionRemoval of inclusion particles from melted aluminium can be facilitated by means of a rotor system that supplies kinetic energy and gas bubbles to the floating metal. At the surface the inclusions adhere to the surface dross or slagg which is removed at regular intervals by the operators. When applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model such a system, one experiences difficulties with the large range of turbulent length-scales encountered, from the large geometrical scales of the rotor and container, through the bubble size and down to the particle diameter. A mathematical model for the complete system will be both complex and require an extreme spatial resolution. Another way of dealing with the problem is to model the micro-scale phenomena separately and apply the results to create a model for the macroscopic system. In a previous work [12] we addressed these problems and developed a procedure for calculating turbulence enhanced flotation to bubbles. It was found that turbulence may have a profound effect on the collision rate of particles to idealized bubbles. In this study we recognize that only a fraction of the total turbulent kinetic energy generated by the rotor's work on the liquid metal may contribute to enhanced flotation. By using a model spectrum for the turbulence, the fraction of turbulent energy in eddies smaller than the bubble diameter is calculated. A twodimensional CFD model was then constructed to calculate the collision efficiency between particles and bubbles of various sizes."

Gole - Gohar Iron ore mines located in Sirjan, Southeast of Iran, have more than 1 billion Iron ore deposit and this area comprises 45 % of Iran Iron reservoirs. The aim of Wet tailing processing line is recovering Hematite ore from wet tailing of Gole - Gohar iron ore processing plant. The Investigations of Hematite recovery plant showed that the recovery of Iron ore to concentrate in Wet Tailing Processing (WTP) line is very lower than that has been predicted, sampling, and designing of the process parameters are not accurate and designed magnetic field intensity is not reasonable for the recovery of Iron in form of Hematite in this line feed. Applying of MIMS in WTP separator and changes in circuit caused in overwhelming increase of Fe recovery, from 11 to 40%. Although recovery of WTP line was improved, but low recovery of this processing line and high content of Hematite ore in WTP tailing, made applying Wet High Intensity Magnetic separators unavoidable. Two kinds of WHIMS have tested for processing of WTP line tailing. Results showed that traditional Jones separator with grooved plate matrix, is more suitable to achieve a better quality of concentrate compared to Slon® separator.

"PROJECTThe “Caltanissetta” Tunnel is part of the ANAS S.p.A (National Autonomous Roads Corporation) $ 1.3 Billion Highway 640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) Rehabilitation Project, consisting in upgrading of 62 km (40 miles) of highway. The Italian multinational construction company Cooperativa Muratori & Cementisti di Ravenna, is the General Contractor for the design and build contract. The highway S.S. 640 starts from Porto Empedocle, to the intersection with the Motorway A 19 Catania-Palermo.The entire project, double carriageway designed for speed 70-120 km/h and maximum longitudinal slope of 4.2%, is divided into two sections. First Section: just finished and opened to traffic. Second Section: mainly involving the province of Caltanissetta, length about 28 km (18 miles), works started in 2013. This second section includes the most challenging work of all the project, the “Caltanissetta” tunnel consisting of two separate tubes, each with 3.9 km length and inside diameter of 13.50 m, in order to host 2 traffic lines and an emergency line. HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT - GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGYThe plan alignment of “Caltanissetta” tunnel is formed by two tubes which are located at a minimum mutual distance of 22 m to a maximum of 63 m, with n. 9 pedestrian and n. 4 road cross passages; ventilation shafts are not provided. Overburden over portals area is about 5 m till a maximum of 120 m. Tunnel sections have variable longitudinal slope from 2.6% to 0.5%, transversal slope of about 3.5%. Right tube length is 3,992 m, left tube length is 3,877 m."
