Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sulfur) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

PERHAPS the most interesting paper of the subsidence session on Monday morning was that by Roland D. Parks entitled "Yieldable Metal Props for Underground Support." This paper described the development of a telescoping prop made from two pieces of pipe. The lower and larger in diameter has cast in it a soft metallic alloy which is slowly extruded through an orifice in the upper and smaller piece of pipe. In this way, the length of the prop decreases gradually as the load from the roof increases. The stress-strain diagram for these props, as tested in the laboratory, is almost ideal, and can be duplicated satisfactorily in successive tests. They have not yet been tested underground. Another paper of much interest was presented by Prof. P. B. Bucky. It is an addition to his series on structural models as applied to mining and was entitled "Effect of Approximately Vertical Cracks in the Behavior of Hori¬zontally Lying Roof Strata." It was illustrated by motion pictures of a model under test. After explaining the un¬derlying theory, the apparatus and the mode of testing, Prof. Bucky set forth the effect of vertical cracks in a mine roof, as follows: (a) the wider the crack, the weaker the roof; (b) where the sides of the crack are in juxtaposition, there is little weakening of the roof; (c) grouting cracks whose sides are not in contact restores the strength of the roof until it may be as strong as, or stronger than the uncracked roof. Small paper props helped sustain the roof. Both the nature of the material and its bonding affect its behavior under stress.

But undoubtedly, it is vital to guarantee solid walls, safe operations environment, beyond to avoid ore losses and pit constraints caused by poor rock breakage on detonation. Kinross Gold Corporation owns the biggest Brazilian Gold Mine, located in Minas Gerais state. Morro do Ouro mine has reached over 30 years of operation, and due its mature age, the complex has developed its pits, becoming them deeper and surrounded by high walls.

IN view of what has happened in - the past three years, it seems incredible that industrial corporations continue to write to engineering and mines schools for "promising members of the graduating class," or, indeed, that they even send representatives to the colleges to interview engineering graduates. Certainly, by this time, every company should be aware of the fact that recent engineering graduates are almost nonexistent and the number is not likely to increase within the next several years. At the February, 1945, annual meeting of the Local Section delegates of the A.I.M.E. in New York, W. B. Plank, professor of mining engineering at Lafayette College, summarized well the situation of the colleges by titling his talk "The Lost Generation of Engineers."

The adsorption of zinc species onto silica in ammonical solutions has been studied. Adsorption isotherms reveal that increasing adsorption occurs as the solution pH is made more alkaline. Fr-IR spectroscopy revealed that the adsorbed species is a zinc ammine complex.

WITH rapidly diminishing oil reserves: a great percentage of which are uneconomical at present prices, some of the existing methods of development and production will have to undergo radical re- visions to meet the changes continually taking place in the petroleum industry. Imagination in an engineer is a great asset. The fancy of today is found to be the realization of tomorrow, and with this thought in mind, there is here presented a more or less imaginative picture which, to my mind, has a meritorious basis. Directed drilling has reached a stage of accuracy sufficient to allow the prediction that this art will be used in the future development of oil structures, especially those \\,it11 thin sand bodies 'and steep dips. Directional drilling in a number of fields in California has gratifying results. Wells which practically laid pipe lines through the oil sands have enjoyed a greater drainage radius with a consequent greater initial and cumulative production. In one field where the vertical thickness of sands was approximately 550 ft., wells drifting at an angle as great as 55 deg. fro111 vertical had over 1100 ft. of perforated pipe in contact with these sands. Após o bobinamento com temperatura controlada, as bobinas são resfriadas até um valor próximo da temperatura ambiente para o processo de decapagem. Há uma bibliografia farta no que diz respeito à temperatura de bobinamento e seus efeitos nas propriedades mecânicas e na microestrutura do aço plano laminado a quente. Contudo, pouco se encontra sobre a influência das taxas de resfriamento pós bobinamento nas propriedades mecânicas e na microestrutura do aço, especialmente nas propriedades finais de materiais que são submetidos à laminação a frio e recozimento. O tempo médio de resfriamento com água é de dois dias. Já o tempo para resfriamento com ar é de sete dias. Estudou-se o efeito das referidas taxas na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas para um determinado aço tanto após a laminação a quente como após a laminação a frio e recozimento.

Large amounts of copper slag containing about 40 wt% iron is generated during the process of producing copper. Recovery of iron from the copper slag is very essential not only for recycling the valuable metals and mineral resources but also for protecting the environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of separating fayalite by oxidation-reduction process into Magnetite and silicate phases in intermediate temperature condition. Experimental results show that when the oxidation reaction at 1000℃ for 120min and the oxygen flow is 0.1L/min, most fayalite decompose to hematite, less part of magnetite and silica. And then, the mixture of carbon and oxidation product is pressed into blocks and reduced to magnetite and silica at 900℃ for 90min. A magnetic product containing about 57.9wt% iron was obtained from the magnetic separation under a magnetic field strength of 100 mT.

Wet stirred media milling is a widely applied grinding process in the field of mineral processing to produce <10 μm ground materials. In this paper, the results of wet stirred media milling of different Ti, Fe and Cu-oxide and phosphate minerals are presented. During the experimental work, grinding of ilmenite, vivianite, hematite and cuprite was carried out in a continuous operation wet stirred media mill. During the experiments, the particle size distribution and specific surface area of the ground materials were determined after a certain grinding time, as well as measuring the specific grinding energy, thereby determining the grinding kinetics of the different minerals. The measurement results showed the differences and similarities in the grindability of the individual minerals. Nano particulate vivianite, hematite and ilmenite was successfully manufactured in a stirred media mill; however cuprite was characterised as the coarsest final product for the same grinding circumstances. O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar o desenvolvimento da compensação de sopro no Alto-Forno 3 da CSN durante as manobras dos regeneradores para o ciclo de sopro com o incremento da vazão do ar soprado vindo do moto-soprador. Para a realização deste trabalho utilizou-se a metodologia DMAIC. Na apresentação do resultado final serão demonstrados valores alcançados em torno de 60% de redução da pressão da base do alto-forno com o desenvolvimento e por consequência, um aumento de sua produtividade.

Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level told mine. stalled placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. BN (Boron Nitride) based composites were prepared with hot-pressing by using h-BN as main material in ceramic preparation process. The relative density, bending strength, vickers’ hardness, thermal shock resistance, thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, phase composition and microstructure were tested and analyzed by using modern testing technology. The results indicate that the best formula is B, the relative density is 97%, the bending strength is 260 MPa, the hardness is HV5 343kg/mm2, the thermal expansion coefficient is 2.8×10-6℃-1, the thermal conductivity is 22 W/(m.K) and have no crack after thermal shock for 20 times by water cool. XRD analysis indicates that the main phase compositions are h-BN, β-Si3N4 and sialon. SEM studies show that the grains wrapped up by solid solution.

O quartzo contido no concentrado, medido pelo teor de SiO2, é um dos principais itens de controle de qualidade do concentrado produzido em usinas de beneficiamento de minério de ferro. Nas usinas de beneficiamento da Samarco Mineração S/A o processo de concentração é realizado em etapas de flotação reversa de quartzo. São utilizadas tanto células mecânicas quanto colunas de flotação. A especificação do concentrado final produzido na usina de beneficiamento é obtido em uma etapa de flotação em colunas (3 colunas; 3,6mX14m). Com o objetivo de melhorar a performance desta etapa de flotação em colunas foram identificadas algumas oportunidades de melhoria, a saber: substituição dos spargers por slan jet; redistribuição e reposicionamento dos borbulhadores; substituição de chapéu chinês e do distribuidor de polpa equalizando a alimentação das colunas; otimização dos parâmetros de processo (vazão de ar e camada de espuma); realização de testes de flotação em bancada com amostras do fluxo que alimenta as colunas variando a dosagem de coletor. Nos testes em bancada uma éter-amina foi utilizada como coletor de quartzo. Os testes de bancada mostraram a possibilidade de reduzir o teor de SiO2 no concentrado de forma significativa aumentando a dosagem de coletor até 75g/t. A partir das modificações no sistema de aeração, distribuição da alimentação das colunas e com a adição de coletor, a taxa de redução de SiO2 passou de 20% para 40%.

Syncrude Canada Limited is presently studying commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailings of the openpit A lhabasca tar sands operation. When tar sands are processed and upgraded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be removed f rom the extraction circuit and beneficiated to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. Calculated recovery rates indicate that crude oil production capabilities of 105,000 barrels per day would provide 26,000 tonnes of zircon and 114,000 tonnes of titanium minerals annually. The titanium minerals concentrate is a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile; it could be used as recovered or upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the consrruction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada, a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm&apos;s Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. Main ventilation fans are used in all the mines and they run continuously 24 hours a day and 365 days in a year. Any improvement in their performance can lead to considerable power saving. The basic principle for selection, operations, and related measures are discussed in brief in the paper. The contributions of different elements of mine fan on its performance are discussed in brief. The means to improve efficiency of a running fan is also discussed and the importance of saving even 1 Kwh is elaborated. It is found that the cost of the energy saved may even permit a replacement fan to be procured in a few years time.

"Fine coal separation has been always concerned. The froth flotation is not efficient in desulfurization because of the low rate of sulfide liberation from raw coal, the natural hydrophobicity caused by sulfur concentration on the surface of sulfide, and the presence of large amounts of middling feed. An efficient centrifugal gravity separator was employed to separate for Shandong –0.5mm high sulphur coal, the partition curve of centrifugal separator was obtained with conclusion that the Ecart probable error value of the separator is 0.095, the imperfection I value is 0.128. Finally, comparing with the coal flotation using progressive release method, the result shows that the effect of the desulfurization with centrifugal gravity force field based on density difference between coal and minerals are much better than that of the floatation which operates based on the difference in surface properties. It provides a efficient technical way for fine coal separation. INTRODUCTION Coal plays the most important role in the energy consumption in China. Although natural gas, wind energy, nuclear power has made great progress in recent years, but the share of coal in the final energy consumption accounts for 70-80%, which is determined by energy storage of China. Under the requirement of environmental protection, the clean utilization of coal resources becomes more and more important, and the need has already been identified. Coal washing and processing plays an important role in the process of high-efficiency and clean utilization of coal. For the separation of fine coal, flotation is a traditional method for effective separation and has been used in large scale industrial applications in coal preparation plant. However, for the separation of difficult-to float coal, especially fine oxidized coal and low–rank coal with hydrophilic surface, flotation is usually inefficient [1-3]. Although many pretreatment methods have been adopted, including grinding, microwave pretreatment, new flotation reagents, the problem of efficient separation has not been completely resolved [4-6]. Thus, an enhanced gravity separation method using particle density difference rather than hydrophobic difference was proposed for the separation of fine coal. Many research results have proved that this is a practical and effective method of sorting. R.Q. Honaker used Falcon C10 concentrator, Knelson centrifugal separator and spiral separator to clean the fine coal with size of 600*210 µm and 210*37µm, the effects of different operating parameters on the separation index was discussed. The results show that the separation density of Falcon can reach 1.6, and the Ep value can reach 0.1-0.15. This paper revealed that for the separation of fine coal with high sulfur content or fine grained content. Falcon has high separation efficiency with low cost. Separation results present in another paper showed that the desulfurization efficiency of inorganic sulfur was better than that of flotation [7-8]."

Naica consists of at least 10 mantos and 40 chimneys that have produced over 15 million tens of ore with 10% Zn, 13% Pb and 13 oz/ton Ag. The ore occurs in thick-bedded, folded Cretaceous limestone. Fractures and 26 Ma old felsite dikes with an initial strontium isotopic ratio of 0.708 localize the mineralization. The mantos follow the dikes and have abundant early skarn with manganohedenbergite, calcic garnet, idocrase, quartz, calcite, wollastonite, schellite and later sulfides. The chimneys arise from the mantos and change from silicate-rich to silicate-free sulfide limestone replacements. Carbon, oxygen and sulfur isotope data on carbonates, silicates, sulfides and sulfates are compatible with a single evolving (magmatic?) fluid.

"China is a major coal producer and consumer. It is necessary to mine the steeply pitching coal seams due to development of the coal industry to meet the increasing needs for coal. Flexible shield supports mining is a safe and efficient mining method for steeply pitching coal seam that was first applied in HuaiNan mining area in the 1970s. The coal seams are steeply pitching in DaAnShan Colliery, so mining is mainly done by the flexible shield supports method. The roadway lay-out and extraction technology are researched in order to improve the safety, yield and work efficiency in the flexible shield supports working face. Optimization of the flexible shield supports mining method is discussed. The main optimization aspects are as follows: (1) the angle of working face and mining track roadways are increased from 23° to 28°, and (2) the technology and parameters of coal breaking are optimized. Applicable conditions, as well as advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. Finally, a comparison is made of the two different flexible shield supports mining methods, namely ""bench blasting . technology"" and ""piecewise blasting technology"".INTRODUCTIONChina is the largest producer and consumer of coal in the world and relies heavily on coal for energy production. At present, Chinese production is about 42% of the worldwide production, and coal has accounted for 76% of primary energy production. Coal plays a dominant role in the structure of energy production and consumption, which is fuel and an important industrial raw material but it is non-renewable. In recent years, the high inclined seams (35°< angle of coal seam < 45°) and steeply pitching coal seams (angle of coal seam >45°) have drawn increasing attention in the mining sector along with the growth of coal mining. There are two reasons. First, there are abundant reserves of high inclined and steeply pitching coal seams in China, which account for 15- 20% of total reserves (Xie, Dong-hai, 2007). Highly inclined and the steeply pitching coal seams are mined in more than 50% of the western mining provinces such as Sichuan, ChongQing, YunNan, GuiZhou, XinJiang, GanSu, NingXia, etc. As the mining of mineral resources continues west in the 21st century, the study of coal mining in high inclined seams and steeply pitching coal seams will be of great importance. Secondly, better quality coal has become scarcer in the eastern mining areas after years of exploitation, so steeply pitching seam mmmg is growing more prevalent. In short, carrying out research on steeply pitching seam mining technology plays an important role in sustaining the development of the Chinese coal industry."
