Rock falls in coal mines cause many injuries each year. Most of these injuries are not caused by major roof collapses, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate top or roof skin. Even though safety professionals and mine operators strive to reduce these types of injuries, there has not been a substantial decrease in the rock fall injury rate over the past decade. Various surface controls are used in mines to control the roof skin. One control that has proven to be very effective is roof screening. Roof screen effectively controls roof skin and provides a high roof surface coverage. Although many mines are reluctant to use screen for primary skin control because of the additional costs of time and materials, others are having great success at controlling both the costs and surface rock. In this study, injury data are presented that show a dramatic reduction in roof skin injuries when screening is used. Much of this success is due to the protection from falling rock that the operators receive from roof screen. Five case studies in which roof screen was used are presented along with the associated costs of materials, impact on bolting advance rates, and potential ergonomic risks. The effects of roof screening on skin control and safety are also included. Finally, this paper provides information about best practices and features of roof bolting machines that affect production and safety.

IN the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son John. Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, .Anne West; who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and: of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a. short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short- time in Montevideo, and on his return married Isabella Zimmerman, a daughter of the head of the firm. Their happy married life was cut short by the death of Mrs. Frazier shortly after the birth of the subject of this sketch which, occurred October 3, 1841. Mr. Frazier did not long survive her, and left his orphaned sons to, the care of his mother, from whom he had inherited a lovable and deeply religious nature, an : artistic temperament and a capacity for thorough work. Whatever of these traits fell by inheritance to these children were strengthened by the influence of their grandmother, and. the purity of mind, the delicacy of sentiment, the refinement of honor, which characterized. Professor Frazier, are due to Anne West Frazier, and are generally present in the characters of all of gentle blood who have been under the sole and immediate influence of a mature and refined woman. The LUMINEOS network was established in 2013 to monitor mining-induced seismicity in Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD), located in south-western Poland. Since the starting time, the network was improved and today consists of 17 seismometers and 10 accelerometers. Up to now, the strongest recorded earthquake in the region had Mw4.0. Both raw seismic data and earthquakes catalog for events recorded by the LUMINEOS network are fully open and available on the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/#episode:LGCD). During the last 7 years, the network improvements gave us a possibility to increase location accuracy for shallow mining events. This accuracy is influenced by factors such as the configuration of seismic stations, noise level at seismic stations, and the influence of the velocity model. Here we encountered two main issues which are worth to discuss. The first one is the low detection threshold of two seismic stations and their significant impact on the location errors. The second one is the large uncertainty in the S-wave picking. Even though S-waves are not so clearly visible on seismograms, they are very helpful in the estimation of source location and strength of seismic events in the region. In our work, we present the history of LUMINEOS network and corresponding improvement on location accuracy as well as the influence of noisy stations on the error distribution and how it is connected with location results. We also investigate the effect of the S-wave phases and how they are related to the accuracy of the earthquakes locations in the network.

Bottom blown oxygen copper smelting process, operated at high grade matte (up to 75 wt% Cu) with relatively low (2-3 wt%) Cu in slag, has been commercialized for more than five years at Dongying Fangyuan Nonferrous Metals CO., Ltd. Quenched slag and matte samples have been collected at different operating conditions while the slag temperature was measured by thermocouple. The samples were analysed by X-ray Fluorescence and Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis. FactSage computational software was used to explain the observations of the industrial samples. The analyses show that the copper loss was closely related to the operation parameters. The Fe/SiO2 in slag and temperature determine the solid proportion, which significantly affects the physical entrained and also chemically dissolved copper in the slag. The present study will be useful in understanding the slag chemistry of bottom blown copper smelting furnace and in optimization of the operating conditions to lower Cu loss in the slag.

The optimization and improvement of a modern integral iron and steel works gets more and more difficult as each individual plant is already operated at its best efficiency and at the lowest operational expenditures. However very often the individual plants are considered as stand-alone units and there are losses and inconsistencies on interfaces and take over points, which could be avoided and by that improving the overall performance of the iron and steel works as a holistic unit. Primetals Technologies looked into this subject extensively in the recent years and is now ready to offer new tools and services in order to assist operators to find further potential for improvement in processes, which seem to be fully developed at first sight.

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

"SynopsisThe physical properties of oxidative sintered pellets produced from typical South African UG2 ore are compared with the physical properties of pellets produced with conventional South African metallurgical-grade chromite ore (from the Lower Group 6 or the Middle Group 1 and 2 seams). A statistical evaluation of the cured (sintered) compressive strengths proved that pellets prepared from UG2 ore are likely to have the same, or better, compressive strength than pellets prepared from metallurgical-grade chromite ore. The cured abrasion strength of the UG2 pellets was also superior to that of the metallurgical-grade pellets. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) backscatter, secondary electron, and elemental X-ray mapping were used to determine the reasons for the general superior strength of the UG2 pellets. The case study UG2 ore also required 13 kWh/t less energy for milling to attain the required particle size distribution prior to pelletization, which can lead to substantial cost savings. Results presented in this paper can be utilized by ferrochromium (FeCr) producers to better quantify the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of UG2 ore for FeCr production.IntroductionChromite, a mineral of the spinel group, is the only commercially viable source of virgin chromium units. Geologically, commercial chromite deposits in the world are found in three forms, i.e. alluvial-, podiform-, and stratiform-type deposits (Murthy et al., 2011; Cramer et al., 2004). Alluvial deposits were formed by weathering of chromite-bearing rock with the subsequent release of chromite and gravity concentration by flowing water. However, these deposits are relatively small and of comparatively minor commercial interest. Podiform-type chromite deposits usually occur as irregularly shaped pods or lenses, and their distribution within a mineralized zone is usually relatively erratic and unpredictable, making the exploration of these deposits difficult and costly (Cramer et al., 2004). Stratiform-type chromite deposits occur as parallel seams in large, layered igneous rock complexes with more regular layering and lateral continuity (Cramer et al., 2004). The largest example of a stratiformtype chromite deposit is the Bushveld Complex (BC) in South Africa, which holds an estimated three-quarters of the world’s viable chromite ore resources (Cramer et al., 2004).Several chromite seams exist in the BC. The seams of economic interest are the Lower Group 6 (LG6), the Middle Group 1 and 2 (MG1 and 2), and the Upper Group 2 (UG2) seams (Cramer et al., 2004). The LG and MG seams are specifically exploited for their chromium content, while the UG2 seam is mined primarily as a source of platinum group minerals (PGMs) (Xiao and Laplante 2004). Extraction of the PGMs from the UG2 ore usually involves the liberation of the sulphide by milling and subsequent recovery of the PGM concentrate through flotation (Xiao and Laplante, 2004). Chromite in the PGM concentrate is undesirable; therefore, PGM recovery circuits are specifically designed to ensure maximum rejection of the chromite to the tailings stream. However, the chromite in the PGM tailings can potentially serve as feedstock for ferrochrome (FeCr) production, after beneficiation to increase the chromium content."

Actually, the burning of coal in powdered form is a subject that has held the attention of engineers for a century or longer. Its widespread use, however, is comparatively recent, As early as 1866 patents were granted to Messrs. Whelpley and Storer for a method of feeding pulverized coal into a furnace as an auxiliary to the grate fuel. In the many tests made during the subsequent years with various kinds of apparatus, the experimenters were handicapped in not getting the coal fine enough to obtain complete combustion and to prevent excessive formation of slag.

"Economic and other factors, mostly outside of metallurgy, that strongly influence applied research, development and especially successful commercial adoption of new processes for producing primary metals and other commodity materials are reviewed. These factors, which can be both positive and negative in their influence, are often too lightly regarded in the research planning stage. They include continuing imperatives that have long influenced new process development as well as more recent trends. Both are discussed. Nearly all new materials eventually become commodities--products made to standard specifications with no producer control over price. Success requires being a low cost producer on a world wide basis. Composites and other complex material assemblages are unlikely to escape this fate as they mature.INTRODUCTIONThe adoption of new processes, beginning with research and development, for primary metals and other commodity materials is particularly difficult because each new process must supplant an existing process that is already being used commercially. There are many requirements besides technical innovation and cost superiority that must be met by the new process. Consequently, few innovations make it all the way from the research laboratory to commercial success.This paper discusses some of the factors that influence success in developing new processes for primary metals and commodity materials, based on the authors experience as a research metallurgist and industrial research manager. It begins with some of the factors that are always present and constrain successful process research and development, and proceeds to current trends that are expected to continue long enough to influence processes in the year 2000. Many of these trends are contradictory in their effect on new process development, and the future remains uncertain.The prevailing importance of these trends will vary with the material, process concept and other factors intrinsic to each case. Nevertheless, an awareness of these influences can help to avoid some of the R&D pitfalls and dead ends. Such awareness is deemed to be a necessary condition to avoid failure when commercial adoption of a new process is the goal."

The semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill at the MMG Century operation has failing load cells that are essential to the control strategy used to stabilise the mill. Currently, mill-bearing pressure is used as a proxy for the load cells, but it has been found to be a noisy signal and lacking in useful sensitivity. It is also prone to variations and drift due to temperature. After consideration of a number of options, a non-contact acoustic array has been installed around the SAG mill to provide a more stable proxy load signal as well as other information about the internal operation of the?mill.The installation consists of 12 microphones to provide some detail into the operational differences that occur during normal operations at the MMG Century SAG mill. This acoustic approach acknowledges that operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions that are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them.Previous studies have attributed the acoustic noise to a range of events that occur inside these mills (Pax, 2011; 2012). Consequently, non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour can provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. By measuring key microphone signal attributes at different positions around a mill, a holistic picture of mill internal operation can be developed.This paper will describe the installation of the 12 microphones and discuss the use of the acoustic load signals as a proxy for failing load cells. It will also present data from new observations of internal mill dynamics and the results of implementation of control using these acoustic signals. Modern computers and software provide powerful tools for the geologist to construct reliable models of geological resources, and the mining engineer to produce accurate and workable mine plans. Over the years many people have developed a phobia of computers, especially for geological analysis, modelling and mine planning. This phobia is often caused by a lack of knowledge, poor training or a bad experience. The adoption however of computers for geological modelling and mine planning is now becoming mainstream. With the correct training, a good understanding of input data, and detailed knowledge of the required results, the phobia can safely be overcome to provide mining operations with increased productivity.

Extractions of minerals from Searles Lake brines have taken place since 1873. Early operations were for borax and raw trona found on the surface, expanded after 1914 to include potash, salt cake, and soda ash. A new soda ash plant now in operation will double area production. The evaporite beds were formed by desiccation of Eastern Sierra runoff. The resulting series of brine-bearing salt beds supply the fluids necessary to feed the area chemical plants. Production methods include evaporation and crystallization for potash, borax, and salt cake; carbonation of brine to recover soda ash; and organic extraction of borax.

BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal operates Dendrobium Mine in an area 10-20km west-northwest of Wollongong in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales, Australia. The mine recently completed longwall mining in Area 3A adjacent to an overhanging rock feature known as Sandy Creek Waterfall, which had been identified as a significant, and potentially sensitive natural surface feature of the environment. This waterfall lies within the Sydney drinking water catchment area, in a surface terrain of variable topography where non-conventional subsidence behaviour such as valley closure, and far-field horizontal movements are known to occur, over and above conventional subsidence responses to mining. As a part of the conditions of approval to mine, Illawarra Coal undertook to protect the waterfall and the section of Sandy Creek immediately upstream of the waterfall from the effects of longwall mining using an innovative management process and an array of very high resolution monitoring systems. This paper outlines the type of non-conventional subsidence effects that can occur; the range of different monitoring regimes adopted in response to such effects in order to develop an understanding of the valley closure phenomenon in proximity to the waterfall and provide suitable early warning data. The paper also describes the management processes that were adopted, incorporating the use of these monitoring regimes in order to successfully protect the waterfall from the valley closure effects of mining four adjacent longwall panels in close proximity to the waterfall while continuing to maximise recovery of the coal resource in the area. The management structure adopted involved a technical committee, a steering committee, and an external independent reviewer. The technical committee was responsible for design of the monitoring systems, interpretation of the results, and making timely recommendations to the company steering committee who were then able to make informed decisions on when to cease mining each adjacent panel. The steering committee comprised Illawarra Coal management and technical personnel. Although the steering committee took advice from the technical committee, all decisions relating to mining were made by the steering committee. An external reviewer was engaged by the steering committee at the end of each longwall panel to review the results, interpretation and management decisions. This management structure was effective in successfully protecting the very sensitive structure of Sandy Creek Waterfall from potential impacts of nearby mining in the midst of active ongoing natural erosion processes.

The aquatic hazard classification system of the OECD and EU requires that sparingly soluble metal substances (SSMS) be tested using the OECD Dissolution/Transformation protocol in order to quantify the release of the ecotoxicological relevant species (dissolved ions). The SSMS category contains massive forms of metals, which due to their low solubility and slow transformation characteristics are a special case. The main factors that produce the release of metal into solution are exposed surface loading, pH, and stirring rate. The classification system at present prefers the use of mass loading as opposed to surface loading, in which case the amount of metal released will primarily be a function of the pH, and mass loading. Within the framework of the European Copper Voluntary Risk Assessment, coordinated by the European Copper Institute, we have proposed and developed a methodological procedure in which we demonstrate that surface area is an intrinsic property of a SSMS and we link the exposed surface loading to the toxicity reference value in order to obtain an aquatic hazard classification for massive metals. As example, the aquatic hazard classification for copper massive will be discussed. This approach is recommended for metal massives and metal powders.

The application of the bottom-blowing in the steelmaking process of EAF can effectively shorten the mixing time of the molten bath, accelerate the removal of carbon, phosphorus and sulfur, and improve the production efficiency and product quality. Information about the effects of changing molten steel velocity during the smelting process would help to accurately model molten bath dynamics. In this study, numerical simulation software was employed to simulate the EAF steelmaking process under variable eccentric bottom-blowing gas flow situations. Velocity field data were obtained for the different bottom-blowing schemes. When other nozzles’ bottom-blowing gas flow rates were maintained at 133 L/min, the average velocity of molten steel in EBT (Eccentric Bottom Tapping Area) was increased from 2.8 10−3 to 3.4 10−3 m/s with the eccentric gas flow rate of bottom-blowing from 100 to 267 L/min, the average velocity of molten steel in the bath increased from 4.3 10−3 to 4.6 10−3 m/s with the eccentric gas flow rate of bottom-blowing from 100 to 267 L/min.

The Broken Hill proprietary company Limited grate kiln pellet plant (1) located at Whyalla in South Australia commenced production on May 13, 1968. During commissioning, about 25,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced. Plant performance was satisfactory and acceptable under the plant guarantee. For production reasons, it was necessary to curtail the fluxed pellet run and revert to the production of acid pellets. In 1970, some 250,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced under varying operating conditions to determine the requirements for optimum quality pellets at acceptable production rates. In excess of 180,000 long tons of these fluxed pellets were exported to Japan. Problems experienced in production of the fluxed pellets are detailed, and the quality of the fluxed pellets compared to that of normal acid pellets produced at Whyalla. Brief Plant Details Run of mine ore treated was predominantly soft and friable and contained an average of 66 per cent Fe, 1.7 per cent Si02 and 1.8 per cent Al203. The main iron mineral in the ore was hematite with some martite also present. Plant feed was ground dry in ball mills 11 ft in diameter by 29 ft long to a Blaine surface area of 1600 sq.cm/g and the ground ore was wetted in a pug mill. Balling was carried out in balling drums 10 ft in diameter by 32 ft long. Induration equipment included an eighteen windbox grate 12 ft 2 in. wide by 164 ft 1 in. long, a rotary kiln 18 ft 6 in. diameter by 118 ft 8 in. long and an annular cooler 50 ft mean diameter by 7 it wide.

Commercial modeling software and increasingly efficient computers enable today computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to be used as a tool for a more comprehensive understanding of the flash smelting and flash converting processes. CFD modeling can be used for design purposes in many technological areas, but some relevant physical and chemical phenomena are still missing in the commercial CFD solver packages. Therefore, Outokumpu has developed several subroutines for solvers to describe analytically the phenomena in the flash smelting environment. CFD sub-models of the copper concentrate and matte combustion, the particle-particle-wall interactions and for more accurate radiation properties of the gas-particle suspension are needed to ensure reliability of numerical simulations on the flash smelting and converting vessels. Several basic combustion phenomena can be modeled with a number of commercial solver packages, but own models for combustion must be included in the case of sulfides as the feed. Mathematical models for copper concentrate and solid matte combustion have been developed during the last decade. They calculate compositions of the particles and temperature, based on extensive experimental research work in laboratory scale furnaces with validated kinetic parameters and temperature measurements of reacting particles. Inside and near the concentrate burner, the standard particle tracking methods do not include the particle-particle interactions and the particle-wall interaction is too much simplified to describe properly the particle collisions with the distribution cone. Therefore, additional models for the particle-particle as well as particle-wall interactions have been written and implemented. For thermal radiation, models for the emissivity of a gas mixture and for calculating the particle absorption and scattering coefficients have been developed and tested. In addition, the advanced radiation model can be used i.e. in the enhanced simulation of off-gas cooling in the heat recovery boiler area of the flash smelter.

Study of moisture-induced swelling strain in Pennsylvanian Period rocks of the Appalachian Plateau in West Virginia shows a 2:1 biaxial horizontal anisotropy which trends NW-SE. Oriented in-situ slabs of coal mine roof rock were collected across West Virginia, dry-sawed to size, air-dried to stability, and then monitored for moisture changes and deformations in the horizontal plane through one wetting cycle and drying cycle. Biaxial swelling strains were exhibited in nearly all rocks tested, with maximum horizontal deformations occurring normally-incident to the strike of regional geologic fold structures. This relationship persists as fold strike varies across the study area. A connection with Alleghanian fold development and/or post-Alleghanian fold relaxation is suggested. Deformations were largest in shales, but occurred in sandstones and siltstones as well. During testing, moisture-induced fractures (MIF) developed parallel to the regional fold structure and ranged in size from hairline cracks to sample-destroying cracks that were orthogonal to the observed biaxial swelling strain direction. Preferential wetting and swelling of clay minerals along NE-trending fractures, related to a fold-parallel fracture fabric of regional extent across West Virginia, is the most likely reason for the observed systematic NW-oriented biaxial swelling strains. The testing methods used in this study are simple and inexpensive and produce robust results that offer insight into a regional, anisotropic mechanical weakness that imparts a dynamic, asymmetrical horizontal stress to moisture-sensitive coal mine roof rocks over time. Because a similar mechanical fabric has been reported in Devonian-age shales, these findings may have implications for shale gas developers in the Appalachian Basin challenged by rapid aperture closure rates along horizontallydrilled induced fracture networks in Devonian rocks like the Marcellus Shale. The paper concludes with an example of how the concept of a preferred swelling strain direction might be applied to improve the effectiveness of roof trusses.
