Tae purpose of this paper is to present types of charts adapted to aid in the graphic solution of fan-performance problems of selection and operation, and to urge the adoption of similar charts by the National Association of Fan Manufacturers as standard forms for presenting fan-performance data. As matters now stand, it is difficult for the average engineer to solve such problems because a laree number of variables are involved, and performance data are not presented in a manner that permits their direct application to many problems encountered in practice. The performance of any centrifugal machine is determined not only by the machine itself but also by the fluid-flow system on which it operates. Actual performance of centrifugal fans is therefore e matter of the type, size, and speed of fan, on the one hand, and of the relation of pressure to quantity of flow, as determined by the physical condition of the airway system, on the other.

As a part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing natural resources in Alaska, the Bureau of Mines studied the tin-bearing gold-placer deposits in the Tofty area of the Hot Springs district in central Alaska. The principal objective of the Bureau's work was to obtain facts about the extent and character of the placer deposits (including tailing) to indicate the economic or strategic tin-production potential of the Tofty "tin belt." A secondary objective was to determine (if possible) the bedrock Source of the cassiterite and other minerals found in the placer deposits. The placer phase of the work was begun in July 1954 and was continued during the 1955 and 1956 field seasons. Extensions to, and connections between, known placer channels were sought by 82 churn-drill holes. The Bureau drilling did not expand the placer deposits beyond the limits established by drift-mining operations and by previous drilling done by private concerns.

Blast furnace slag (BFS), one kind of typical solid waste in the steel industry, was used as structural materials to synthesize NaNO3/BFS composite phase change materials (C-PCMs) by mixing and sintering method. NaNO3 in the composites functioned as phase change materials (PCMs) and BFS as structural skeleton to maintain a stable external form. In this study, the prepared C-PCMs could remain in the solid state without salt leakage even if operating temperature exceeded the melting temperature of NaNO3. The composition and structure of BFS and the prepared composites were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and TG-DSC analyses. The results showed that NaNO3 was well incorporated in the pores of BFS. The melting temperature and latent heat of the final composites were 300.5 °C and 65.53 J/g, respectively. The product also had good thermal storage performance and durability even after 100 thermal cycles. The energy density of the product was calculated as high as 468.03 J/g for an temperature range of 50–400 °C.

The ever changing conditions in the coal-mining industry and the increasing competition of other fuels such as oil, natural gas, wood refuse, etc., have made it imperative that the coal operator be in a position to supply a constantly uniform and clean product. The old idea of putting on the market "anything so long as it's black" no longer holds good. Today's users of fuel have to consider the amount of heat per dollar they obtain from the fuel they buy. Burning of coal has become largely mechanical, at least so far as industrial coal is concerned, and industrial coal is the kind the bituminous operator is for the most part called upon to supply. When we get into things mechanical, the matter of precision has a mighty bearing on efficiency. Precision in coal means standardization of quality, or uniformity of preparation in size and also in ash and moisture content. The trend of coal mining is ever towards more and more mechanization. Mechanization means coal-cutting machinery, loading machinery, conveying machinery, etc. Although such methods cut the cost, the cleanliness of coal so mined and loaded is not controllable to the same extent as when each operation is by hand labour. The operator has therefore the problem of mining his coal as cheaply as possible, but at the same time preparing a product which will to the utmost satisfy his customer. The answer is a mechanical cleaning plant. Before installing a cleaning plant, however, the operator must take into consideration the cleansability of the coal from his particular mine. This is accomplished by taking representative samples of the seam or seams to be treated, and subjecting these to screen tests, followed by float and sink tests on each size product. From these tests, it can be readily found to what degree of cleanliness the several sizes can be prepared advantageously, and also what will be the percentage recovery of cleaned coal. The accompanying tables give the results of representative tests on Michel coals of minus-2-inch size. All coal over 2-inc.h was intended to be hand cleaned. The coal-cleaning plants in general use at the present time come under two broad classifications, namely, wet and dry.

Tests were conducted in the Experimental coal mine to study some of the factors that should be considered in fighting mine fires and to obtain data on the effectiveness of different types of extinguishing agents. The investigation was confined to class "A" fires in a zone 20 feet long, involving coal burning on the floor, on the floor and ribs, and on the floor, ribs, and roof of the mine entry. It was determined that the time elapsed between ignition and attack of the fire is very important. A fire in the early stages was found to be controlled more easily and quickly than a similar fire that had burned longer. It was also found that, under suitable conditions, a fire in the floor, ribs, and roof develops very rapidly and consequently might spread over a considerable area if not brought under control quickly. The ventilating current affects fire-controlling operations markedly. Attack in intake or fresh air is highly advantageous, the chief inconvenience being the radiant heat from the fire. Attack in direct return air was impossible for the fires tested in this investigation, because of the high temperature. Universal-type gas masks for noxious gases and smoke offered no protection against the intense heat. Approach to a fire in the return air behind a water-fog curtain is not feasible unless the direction of air flow can be reversed. In one" test fresh air was carried to the fire area with a line brattice. Although the entire controlling operation was in fresh air and masks were not necessary, it was considerably more difficult to control the fire than when a similar fire was attacked in intake air.

"Introduction.Powdered or pulverized coal is extensively used as a fuel, the total annual consumption*** in the United States being about 12.000,000 tons, and growing steadily. As the coal is usually pulverized so that 70 per cent or more parses through a 200-mesh sieve, it presents difficulties in sieving, because such finely divided material tends to clog the meshes. A fineness test is desirable in order to judge the efficiency of the pulverizing apparatus, and as an indication of the particle size of the coal being burned.Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, has recognized the desirability' of a standard method for determination of fineness of powdered coal. The Bureau of Mines, in co-operation with this Committee, conducted sieving tests on two standard samples of powdered coal, which are described in this paper. As a result of this work a method for making fineness tests, by band sieving, is recommended as a standard method, while a rapid method, by machine sieving, is given for routine tests.Outline of Investigation.Preliminary trial tests were made by the bureau and tentative methods were formulated for making the sieving tests both by band and by machine.Each of two samples of powdered coal was carefully mixed, and portions were sent to the twelve laboratories mentioned later. These were requested to make duplicate sieving tests on the two standard samples, by the hand-sieving and machine-sieving methods, and to follow the tentative procedure exactly as outlined. All of the laboratories made sieving tests by hand shaking and eight of them made tests by machine shaking."

Columbia University’s Manhattanville Campus expansion includes the construction of two new business school buildings. The new buildings require development of an entire city block bound by 12th Avenue, W 131st Street, W 130th Street and Broadway in Upper Manhattan. A support of excavation (SOE) package was first released, followed by a foundation package. The SOE package consisted of approximately 100 soldier piles and 280 anchors, up to 215’ long, to support a cut anywhere from 30’- 50’ below street level. The foundation package alone included approximately 1600 drilled micropiles. Given the breadth of the work scope, Hayward Baker Inc and Moretrench joint ventured on these two projects to bring sufficient knowledge and work resources to complete the work in an efficient and timely manner. This included working with the Owner/Engineer to propose different means and methods for construction to significantly reduce the schedule while meeting the design intent, such as large diameter (36” diameter) augercast piles in place of conventionally drilled soldier piles and large hollow-bar micropiles (103/51 bars) in lieu of pressure-grouted micropiles. The anchors, ranging from 3 to 22 strands, were used for earth retention through both soldier pile and lagging walls and existing slurry walls. These anchors were complicated based not only on their size and length, but also the need to drill some of them under the historic Studebaker building. The overall magnitude of the project with considerations to resource management and material lead times will be addressed, highlighting critical strengths provided by the Contractor to ensure project success. The scope of work discussed in this paper was executed under two separate competitive bid contracts. The first contract included the support of excavation work and the second contract included the foundation package. The support of excavation comprised of drilled soldier piles (performed by Case Foundation as a subcontractor to the JV), driven soldier piles, driven sheet piles, hollow bar tiebacks, multi-strand tieback anchors and micropile soldier piles. The foundation package consisted of drilled micropiles. Due to the large scope of work and critical schedule requirements of the project, the JV had to think outside the box and present value engineered alternates to expedite installation durations.

In 1996, the Dominican Republic operation of Falconbridge (Falcondo) developed a 5-year Process Control Plan in conjunction with the corporate Process Control group located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. This plan was further refined into an analysis of the areas of the highest potential economic return for the company with the reduction shaft furnace operation being the most promising. Historically, the reduction plant, which comprises 12 shaft furnaces, has been the bottleneck of ferronickel production. Since 1996 there has been a history of control development, and the current status is that all 12 furnaces are using advanced model-based multi- variable predictive control. The combination of advanced process control (APC), improved control system performance and improved process information management has resulted in an increased throughput of 6% per shaft furnace and a reduction in operating costs of 4.5 US cent/lb of Ni. The purpose of this paper is to investigate trends in exploration expenditures of a selected group of mining companies for the interval 1968 through 1971. The paper also compares these trends with other financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and comments on the implications of these trends. Although a four-year interval is hardly enough time to establish a long-range set of trends from which operating rules can be derived, the fact that the four years selected are in the immediate past gives some sense of relevance to the matter of exploration expenditures at the present time and in the near future. The sample under study here consists of 21 mining companies. Of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the extraction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining; for example, from oil and gas sates, Also, no companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in this study. Although this definition held up fairly well when studying this list in 1968, the strict application of this definition became more difficult through the years up to the present time. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business, and either deriving their income or planning to derive a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining. "Introduction.Recent experiments (Fieldner, A.C., Katz, S.H., Kinney, S.P., and Longfellow, E.S., Poisonous gas from carbon tetrachloride fire extinguishers, Jour. Franklin Institute, October, 1920, pp. 543-565), by the Bureau of Mines have shown that carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids when applied to fires produce small quantities of irritating and poisonous gases which may be dangerous in very closely confined spaces where conditions are such that the user can not escape without breathing the fumes. The results of the experiments have been confirmed in an independent investigation by the Underwriters Laboratories (Nuckalls, A.H., Corrosive action and products formed when carbon tetrachloride extinguisher liquids are applied to fires, Nat. Fire Protection Assoc. Quarterly, vol. 14, January, 1921, pp. 221-236) who conducted similar experiments for the purpose of determining the corrosive action of these fumes on metals. Both investigations showed that carbon tetrachloride vapor, hydrochloric acid gas, and phosgene were produced in addition to the ordinary products of combustion, such as smoke, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The Bureau of Mines' tests were made by applying a one-quart extinguisher to a wood fire of excelsior in a gas-tight room of 1000 cubic foot capacity. The glass and metal construction of this chamber limited the experimental fire to very small dimensions. It was, therefore, deemed desirable to make a test on a larger scale in the entry of the Bureau's experimental mine in order to similate more nearly the practical use of carbon tetrachloride and other types of extinguishers in mines.Description of extinguishers.Two series of tests were made under identical conditions on different days. Commercial carbon tetrachloride extinguishers were used in the first series of tests and ""foamite firefoam"" extinguishers in the second series of tests."

I. HISTORICAL. BARITE has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State-namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties:, Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties-Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell-but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

"The adoption of tailored-rolled or tailor-welded blanks (i.e. TRB/TWB) in the automotive industry has been known to offer great potential for the optimization of weight, function, cost and complexity. Vehicle light weighting can further be achieved by using high strength aluminum alloys like the 7xxx-series. 7xxx-series alloys are capable of delivering specific strengths equal to or greater than high strength steels. However, room temperature formability of this aluminum class is limited, so one approach to forming 7xxx-series alloys is by hot stamping. Hot stamping utilizes an elevated temperature blank and the high pressure stamping contact of the forming die to simultaneously quench and form the sheet. This paper explores the initial feasibility of tailored thickness material for body-in-white applications when processed under hot stamping conditions.INTRODUCTION Steel tailor-rolled blanks (TRB) or tailor-welded blanks (TWB) have been used within the automotive industry as a method of reducing weight, expanding material utilization, and decreasing overall part/assembly cost (Ganeasan et al., 2015; Merklein et al., 2014; Hirt et al., 2005; Kridli et al., 2000). The production of such tailored thickness materials has resulted in over $2.5 billion (2016) in combined industry sales (Mubea, 2018). As automakers begin to adopt the manufacturing practices traditionally reserved for steel such as tailor rolling/welding with greater enthusiasm for vehicle light weighting, there exist an opportunity to expand the material database to extend beyond the traditional aluminum alloys found in current production. High strength aluminum alloys, i.e. 7xxx-series, are ideal for structural automotive applications due to their high specific strength; however, they have limited room temperature formability. Hot stamping, another manufacturing practice used by the steel industry, can be used to form these high strength materials. The combination of tailoring the thickness of a sheet material and hot stamping provides an opportunity for significant weight saving within an existing manufacturing footprint. This paper explores the potential and challenges of this approach when applied to structural body-in-white components. The methods for tailor rolling, tailor welding and hot stamping are described and applied to the production of a 7075 aluminum alloy B-pillar. The results are discussed in terms of feasibility and weight savings."

"The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

Mercury balances have been obtained for the flotation circuits at Pamour Porcupine Mines, Timmins, Ontario, and at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, Bathurst, New Brunswick. The mineral form of mercury in both deposits has been ascertained. At Pamour Porcupine, the mercury is approximately evenly divided among sphalerite, native silverelectrum and tetrahedrite-tennantite; at Brunswick Mining, this element is contained mostly in the sphalerite, although tetrahedrite (and possibly pyrite) also contains minor quantities.

As a result of the main processes of the limestone treatment ? sawing, buffing and polishing, a technological waste is usually obtained. These final tailings consist of a water suspension with highly variable solid phase content and granulometric composition. Since the waste is conducted to a tailing pool or another place, this leads to environment pollution. In this work the slurry waste generated during the limestone processing in a Bulgarian limestone manufacturing company was characterized. The chemical composition, particle size distribution, solid phase content, whiteness, yellowness, abrasion, specific surface and density were determined. The possibility of obtaining building/construction materials from limestone processing waste was studied in a laboratory scale. The technological tests included thickening, filtration and drying of waste products. Continuous operation laboratory thickener was used. Coagulant Accepta® 8302 (aluminum sulphate solution) and anionic flocculant Magnafloc® 155 were found to be the most effective in the sedimentation of the products. Filtration tests were performed using a laboratory pressure filter. Drying tests were carried out in laboratory facilities using the direct heating method. On the basis of the laboratory results a technology for limestone treatment waste was developed. A production line for building materials from limestone slurry was set up. As a result the manufacturing company has a possibility to use circulating water.
