"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. A method was developed for calibrating photographic emulsions and retrieving working curves for emission spectrography. The values obtained from a digital readout or a recorder chart of a comparator-microphotometer are converted to light intensity values using an emulsion characteristic curve derived from a quartic polynomial preliminary curve. The characteristic curve, consisting of Seidel transform versus the logarithm of intensity, is split into two cubic polynomials at the zero value of the transform, resulting in eight emulsion calibration coefficients. These methods allow use of the calibration curves even at very small and very high intensities, thus extending the range of analysis. Use of a small computer allows rapid calculations. A computer program was written to formulate, code, and file each working curve along with its statistical error. Proper coding of the input data permits the direct printout of the concentration of the elements under investigation.

One New Change is a landmark retail / commercial development in the City of London. Integral to the structure is the three double storey basement from which the building is serviced. The building construction involved a ?top down? (up down) construction technique to give programme benefits. In addition, the planning authority stipulated that 10% of the energy demand had to be met by Renewable technology. Cementation Skanska has not only delivered the foundation package - comprising secant piling and foundation bearing piles including Cemloc® plunged columns - but, alongside subcontractor Geothermal International, also installed a 1.7MW ground source heating and cooling system using Energy Piles® and open?loop wells to provide the renewable energy. The works were successfully installed and completed within a tight programme, and within the logistical constraints imposed by an inner-city location, concurrent demolition works and multi contractor involvement in the basement construction.

The optimisation of a mining operation requires precise ore grade control, metallurgical accounting, and laboratory sampling protocols, which are implemented by using accurate and flawless sampling systems. Good sampling practices, and sampling technologies in these fields have been historically poor and too many existing sampling systems available on the market are flawed in many ways. This is mainly the result of a poor understanding of the Sampling Theory, and the natural result of international standards on sampling that fail to present the Sampling Theory in a logical way, that still promote non-probabilistic sampling, and that fail to address the important details that make a correct sampling system. Many standards barely mention the Sampling Theory in appendices when it should be clearly the main body of a reliable standard on sampling. As a result, many standards show only little expertise in the Sampling Theory. Conventional statistics should only be a scientific tool for the Sampling Theory to reach its height, which has always been well understood by its creators. Conventional statistics can indeed be addressed in appendices of standards in sampling, but not the other way around. Until the Sampling Theory is recognised as the main body of a standard on sampling, incorrect sampling technologies will plague the market, and make it impossible for mining operations to optimise their mining and metallurgical processes. This paper makes a short list of correct new sampling technologies that have been created with respect to the principles taught in the Sampling Theory. Also, suggestions are presented to create better international standards on sampling, which would provide a stronger incentive for manufacturers to build correct sampling systems, and for engineering firms to install only sampling systems that respect the rules of sampling correctness listed in the Sampling Theory.

RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to maximise health and safety performance in the mining industry through implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events. A comprehensive knowledge base has been captured for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This will be extended to outburst, coal burst and bumps, interface displays and controls, tailings dams and inrush in 2013. RISKGATE presents substantive and leading edge controls to assist industry stakeholders in the design, management and reporting of organisational and regulatory compliance requirements. From a broader industry perspective, RISKGATE provides an environment for knowledge capture and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and best practice in the identification, assessment and management of risk. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry. All major Australian mining companies are contributing topic experts to this broad industry initiative. In the first 24 months, nine coal mining companies nominated over 80 different experts who contributed over 400 days of individual time to the knowledge capture workshops. RISKGATE is the largest single Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety (OHS) initiative to date.

STRIPPED of its romantic possibilities, mining is a commercial business, carried on for the profit there is in it, and the business of the manager, in its ultimate analysis, is to make the profit as large as possible. The general manager of a mining company should keep himself personally familiar with all the details of its operations. If be fails to do so, chaos results, labor becomes inefficient, costs go up, and profits go down. Nowhere is this emphasized more than in Mexico. If the mining operations are extensive and complex, involving, besides the work of mining the ore, its transportation and treatment by various milling operations, and the marketing of the products, the business, to be carried on properly, must be divided into a number of main departments, which are subdivided into minor departments. Each main department should be under the immediate charge of a superintendent, or a foreman, and each minor department under a shift-boss. Organized in this way, and with all the principal centers of activity connected by telephone, the manager can keep in touch at all times with the details of every branch of the business, and be in a position to perform effectively the full duty of manager. The ?total cost of mining operations may be broadly divided under the heads of Labor, Supplies, and Marketing. Of these, it will be found, on averaging a number of cases, that the cost of labor will be about two-thirds of the total cost. The importance, therefore, of an efficient labor-department will be apparent. Low levels of thallium were detected in the mine water drainages, and process water discharges of western mining and smelting operations. This required remediation under state regulatory standards, which allow discharges of no more than .0017 ppm thallium in mine water discharges. Influent streams containing thallium can be mitigated to state discharge standards after a single pass through the series of fluidized upflow columns. Test work to determine the optimal flow rates used pilot scale systems at two separate locations treating 5 - 25 gpm of effluent. The test system at the gold mine mimics the full-scale system, which will be based on the existing upflow carbon tanks that have been converted to zeolite columns. The system installed at ASARCO's East Helena smelter has a far more complex influent stream with a high loading of competing cations. Nevertheless the columns filled with CABSORB® are successfully mitigating the thallium contamination. CABSORB® ZS500RW is a product based on the sodium analog of the zeolite mineral chabazite named herschelite.

The correct and rational approach to sampling, testing methods and mill sizing enables one to design a workable technology. This paper contains TOMS institute experience in different grinding indices determination over the last 7 years (SAG Design Test, BWi, CWi, RWi, and other). The firms in construction industry could not sufficiently adapt the rapidly emerging information technologies in recent years into their corporate structures. Therefore, in an effort to further exploit the benefits of information technology (IT), integration of the experiences and backgrounds of construction industry and the advantages of IT, is one of the most open-ended fields for improvement in this industry. Utilization of IT in the construction sites will positively affect the efficiency, productivity, quality and health & safety issues in the construction sites thus the cost and completion time of the projects. Within this context, augmented reality technology, which brings a new perspective into IT, can be put into the service of construction industry. Augmented reality which has been designed to improve the services in many application domains such as school education, military warfare, military trainings, industrial maintenance, retail and medical, can be defined in the simplest form as augmenting the real world with information from the virtual world. The main aim of this study, which presents an overview of an ongoing project, is to develop an innovative method by making a construction worker, foreman, equipment operator or a site engineer watch a very comprehensive and informative animation which will enable the said staff to perform or supervise all the phases of the activity he or she is in charge for in a more efficient, productive, safer and qualified manner by means of smart glasses using augmented reality systems. In this respect, training material related with the activities in the construction sites will be prepared and with a well-fictionalized scenario, animations exhibiting all the phases and details regarding the related activity (e.g. masonry, formwork and rebar works etc.), method of statement, correct and incorrect applications in comparison-wise manner, will be produced. Therefore, the user will be able to reach the training material, method statements etc. in the animations about the activity he or she is in charge for, enabling him or her to figure out the work as prescribed in the specifications. Basic trainings about the system will be given to target group, i.e. construction workers, foremen, operators, site engineers and managers working in the construction sites to apply the system on sites after all the system was tested. After the testings, to determine the effectiveness of this system, semi-structured interviews and survey questionnaires will be conducted among the mentioned target group. Therefore, the potential benefits of this system to the construction industry can be determined. The main target of this study is to implement an efficient, thorough construction management by orienting the staff in the construction sites to perform efficient, safe and qualified works by means of smart glasses that use augmented reality. There are relatively few studies about the implementations of augmented reality technology in construction. The outputs to be attained in the end of the study have the potential of improvement of time, cost, quality and safety parameters by ensuring a qualified, safe, efficient and productive construction management via augmented reality technology in the construction industry.

Duty on Lead Reduced. -On December 28, the President signed H.R. 5047 which reduces the duty on unwrought lead from 3.5% ad valorem to 3% ad valorem, with a floor level of 1.0625 cents per pound, effective retroactively from January 1, 1980, through June 30, 1983. Pacific Northwest Power Bill Passed. -On December 5, the President signed S. 885 which will enable the Bonneville Power Administration to guarantee 20-year contracts to its 15 major industrial customers in exchange for higher rates. In effect, the bill will have industrial customers pay some of the costs of building additional generating facilities in the Northwest, of which thermal units are expected to be a major part. BPA supplies power to six primary aluminum producers which operate eleven plants having over 30% of the primary aluminum capacity in the United States.

Binder, as a necessary functional material of electrode in lithium ion battery, has a vital influence on the electrochemical performance. The humics, coupled with polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), were used as a water-soluble binder for LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode using in lithium ion battery. The techniques of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge were conducted to evaluate the performance of humics binder in LFP electrode. The reversible specific capacity of LFP (HA + PAM + CMC) electrode can reach to 142 mAh g−1 after 50th cycling (100 mAh g−1) on conditions of raw materials with 1 wt% PAM addition, humics and CMC with a mass ratio of 3:1 in binder, and the raw materials mixed in an interval order. Humics has the potential to be used as a novel, eco-friendly and high-efficient binder for lithium-ion battery.

The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of alloy additions on abrasive wear of low-alloy steels. A dry-sand, rubber-wheel abrasion test appa-ratus using ASTM G65-Sl procedure B was used for the abrasive wear tests. Eighty-six material heat-treatment combinations were abrasion tested. Results of these tests were analyzed statistically using regression analysis to see if additions of Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, AI, Cu, and S were significant in affecting the abrasive wear rate of low-alloy steels. Regression analysis was also used to confirm hardness and C affect on the abrasive wear rate of these steels. It was found that for all the steels taken as a group, increased amounts of Mn significantly reduced the wear rate, while increased amounts of Mo and S1 increased the wear rate. Analysis also confirmed previous research done by others, that increasing hardness and amounts of C reduced the wear rate. For the hardened steels taken as a class, only increasing amounts of C and Mn reduced the wear rate, while increases in Si increased the wear rate. In the class of unhardened steels, increases in C, Mn, and S re-duced the wear rate, whereas increases in Mo increased the wear rate. The steels with the best resistance to wear were two hardened experimen-tal steels similar to AISI 1055 and AISI 107S.

The rapid production and accumulation of mineral processing wastes in the environment can present serious threats to environmental quality and human health. Phytostabilisation with native plant ecosystems is, in many cases, a preferred option for rehabilitation of mine waste storage facilities. However, much of the literature has focused on species selection in short-term experiments to test their suitability under the often extreme chemical conditions in the wastes without addressing the fundamental requirements – ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation and functional root zones. As a result, successful examples of phytostabilisation of mine wastes such as base metal tailings have been rare, especially if success is defined as meeting the completion criteria of non-polluting and sustainable land system at rehabilitated sites. Conventional capping options to isolate reactive tailings/wastes by using physical break and/or sealing layers are often not reliable in the long term (particularly under semi-arid climatic conditions) and, in many cases, they may not be feasible in the field due to the large areas to be covered and the lack of adequate suitable materials at mine sites. By using sulfidic tailings as an example, we have proposed a new paradigm for phytostabilising mine wastes – ecologically engineered pedogenesis in tailings involving accelerated physical, chemical and biological weathering of tailings minerals to achieve hydrogeochemical stabilisation and the development of soil functions, soil horizons and functional root zones.Ecologically engineering functional root zones firstly requires controlling geochemical reactivity in the wastes (ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation), which can cause polluting effects in the root zone and plant toxicity. By means of ecological engineering, in situ weathering of primary minerals (eg pyrites) in tailings may be accelerated by adding functional materials (eg functionalised biochars and organic matter) in the waste slurry during the process of deposition. This will remove or diminish key risk factors (eg potential acidity in tailings and elevated soluble heavy metals) in the solid phase, before placing growth media for reconstructing root zones and transplanting/sowing target plant species. However, much of the acidity, soluble metals/metalloids and other salts would be transported out of the solid phase into the wastewater, which can be addressed by on-site water treatment facilities during mine operation. The trajectory and state of engineered pedogenesis in the weathered tailings may be manipulated to provide specific soil horizons within future root zones that are dynamically evolved toward fully functional soil subsystem within rehabilitated plant ecosystems.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Zhou, L and Mulligan, D, 2014. MANY baffling problems of crustal geology-of warping and folding, elevation, subsidence, and great dislocations of the earth's surface-may now be on the verge of yielding to the science of geophysics. Electric, magnetic, gravitational, geothermal, and seismic methods are being turned to the gathering of geological evidence buried by deep layers of rock, or lying beneath the waters of the oceans. In this hope, B. L. Miller expresses the opinion that these geophysical studies will sup- ply useful data bearing-on some of the more theoretical problems of North American geology. Among these for example, is the explanation of how Appalachia disappeared. This ancient land mass is supposed to have foundered beneath the Atlantic Ocean after the close of the Paleozoic era and the question arises, was it warped or faulted downward? The geophysical data, though meagre, indicate that the surface of the dense, basal rocks, the probable remnant of ancient Appalachia now underlying the Continental Shelf, slopes downwards to a depth of some two miles below sea level at a distance of 140 mi. from shore: thus suggesting that the subsidence was the result of warping downward rather than abrupt faulting.

The Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki, Japan earthquake occurred on 11 March 2011 produced a maximum coseismic slip of >50 m near the Japan Trench. To investigate why the plate boundary fault between the subducting Pacific Plate and overriding North American Plate which caused the earthquake had such unprecedented large coseismic displacement and slipped to the trench, Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 343 called Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) drilled three boreholes at Site C0019 through the earthquake fault about one year after the earthquake. Borehole C0019B dedicated to loggingwhile- drilling (LWD) penetrated ~850 meters below seafloor (mbsf) at a water depth of approximately 6890 m. The plate boundary fault is located at ~820 mbsf in the borehole and has been identified as the slip zone during the Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Borehole wall resistivity images obtained from LWD show that drilling induced borehole breakouts are available in a wide depth range above the fault but are not available below the fault. Breakouts are reliable indicators of the orientations of current maximum and minimum horizontal stresses and can also be used to constrain the horizontal maximum and minimum stress magnitudes. As results of breakout analyses, the maximum horizontal stress orientation highly varied in the upper part of the borehole, but has a clear preferred orientation in a northwest – southeast direction in the deeper part just above the fault. This orientation is approximately parallel to the direction of the Pacific Plate subduction. Stress magnitude constraints indicate that the post-earthquake stress states in the hanging wall are either in or close to the normal faulting stress regime. By inferring the pre-earthquake stress state and comparing with the constrained post-earthquake stress state, a significant coseismic stress change was interpreted. The stress change suggests an active slip of the frontal plate-interface consistent with coseismic fault weakening and a nearly total stress drop.

FOLLOWING the receipt of questionnaires from many parts of the world, the Aviation Committee is completing a review of the use of aviation in mining and petroleum operations. The summary of this study should be available at the 1937 Annual Meeting in New York City, at which time several papers will be presented on specific application of aerial geologizing. From the reports received, there is little question that this air branch of mining is here to stay. Of course, the transportation of personnel arid material continues to merit attention but it is in the division of aerial geologizing that flying is finding its widest, most technical application.

A Bayesian decision model of minimun risk, based on the probability and costs of mine discoveries and non-economic projects, is presented for massive sulphide exploration in the Canadian Shield. The sample used for the model is composed of data relating to forty mines, sixty non-economic sulphide occurrences, and sixty occurrences of graphitic and pyritic material. These economic and barren samples consist of drill-tested occurrences which were, in varying degree, characterized by conductivity anomalies. Given the large size, the reliability and the homogeneity of the data base available for massive sulphide exploration, it is shown that certain statistical models can and should be utilized as a tool for decision-making by explorationists. Given this data base, information theory tells us that only those signals that are independent of one another will transmit information with minimum error. An ensemble of six significant multilevel signals, markedly independent of one another and consisting of numeric and geometric form descriptions derived from Bouguer anomaly, aeromagnetic and physiographic maps, were identified and evaluated by case studies. The use of these signals as input in a simple statistical procedure, or in a carefully planned and experienced visual appreciation scheme, can be of significant aid in decisions concerning the choice of favourable areas or sectors to explore in detail. The method of discriminant analysis is theoretically and practically suited for the statistical modelling involved. By way of a simulation on our statistical model, the efficiency of the model and of the underlying criteria is determined for historic cases and, by inference, for its validity in future exploration. An approximate optimized solution is derived from the model which suggests that over 90% of the known ore could be found by screening, according to a model such as that herein described, and drilling only 30% of the targets (mostly barren) normally identified and tested in current and past exploration.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are widely used for tunneling in urban areas because of their high advance rate, precise as-built profile and minimal impact to buildings and traffic on the ground. For a tunnel built by a TBM, there are strict requirements on alignment control and safety. To meet these requirements, it is important to monitor the position of the TBM. In the current practice, the TBM position data, including advance distance and line and level deviations, are reported manually to the managers on a daily basis. To interpret and analyze the position data, the managers also need to refer to various construction drawings. This practice is untimely, inefficient, and error prone for decision making. To improve the current practice, an automatic approach for real-time as-built tunnel product modeling and visualization is proposed, based on TBM position and orientation data autonomously sourced from the Virtual Laser Target Board (VLTB) TBM Guidance System developed at University of Alberta. Related information of the tunnel project, such as the as-designed alignment, soil layers, the ground, existing utility lines, is also visualized together with the model of the as-built tunnel. The modeling algorithm is presented step by step. Its application in a real-life drainage tunnel project is discussed and limitations are also identified.

This paper reviews the history of rock burst research in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho over the last 30 years. Rock bursting is a problem because of a combination of geological factors in the region--complex structure, high horizontal stresses, and strong, brittle rock that readily stores strain energy. The Bureau of Mines has cooperated with industry to study rock burst phenomenon for many years. Early work focused on methods to mitigate bursting problems within the context of existing mining methods. In the 1970's, researchers began investigating methods for altering or controlling conditions that lead to rock bursts. These control measures become part of the stope development that precedes mining or are changes in the mining process itself. Although, researchers continue to develop microseismic techniques, the major research effort focuses on developing a new mining method to reduce the number and severity of rock bursts in order to improve safety and increase productivity in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District.

"Although the role of texture has been increasingly recognised as a geometallurgical indicator of ore characteristics and their variability, the ability to appropriately quantify and correlate it with metallurgical performance remains an ongoing challenge. In this study, we propose the 3D characterisation and quantification of ore textures from drill core using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) with an appropriate image analysis methodology (grey level co-occurrence matrices, GLCM). This methodology has been specially customised for application of 3D XCT grey-scale volumes. This approach has potential as an online mine site analysis tool providing detailed 3D information on both quantitative texture and simple mineralogy.The approach is illustrated in this paper using drill core samples that were manually extracted from various rock types and textures representing the Nkomati Main Mineralized Zone (MMZ) sulfide nickel ore deposit. A preliminary classification of the samples was performed based on their particle size distribution after laboratory scale rod milling. Accompanying QEMSCAN analyses were also used to guide the interpretation of the grey-scale mineralogy and texture in the 3D XCT volumes. The resultant GLCM produced from quantitative 3D image analysis of the XCT volumes indicated sensitivity to ore variability and was able to capture a simple mineralogy and grain size distribution.
