Polypropylene (PP) and its composites have an increasing use in automobile and domestic industries. Since the published results on strain rate effect on yield behavior do not match, and there is a high attention paid for effect of nanometeric fillers on deformation behavior of composites, in this research the strain rate effect on yield behavior of PP and the effect of nanometeric fillers on deformation behavior of PP have been studied. Microscopic observations and tensile tests in different strain rates on neat PP samples and on samples filled with 5, 10 and 15 %wt have been used. A dramatic change in behavior for the modulus and post-yield slope curves when the strain rate is between 0.0433-0.05 s-1 has been observed. Microscopic observations on PP indicate a change in deformation mechanism from shear yield to crazing at the same strain rate that the change in behavior of curves occurs. It has been observed that in PP nanocomposites with higher amount of calcium carbonate, fracture in early stages of deformation occurs in lower strain rates. In other words for a fixed stain rate there is a critical filler percentage such that if the filler percentage is higher then early-stage fracture will occur. Similarly for a fixed filler percentage there is a critical strain rate and in higher strain rates early fracture will occur. The critical stain rate will decrease as the filler percentage increases and vice versa.

The FASTMETSM Process is a coal-based process for converting iron oxide fines into metallic iron. The end product, direct reduced iron (DRI) is used as a low residual charge material in electric arc furnace steelmaking. This paper describes the FASTMET Process and its potential application in the United States. Operating results from a 175 kg/h process simulator are presented. Characteristics of the end product are discussed. Process economics are reviewed along with plans for scaling-up the process to full commercial size.

Mineralogy may be applied to the selection of appropriate separation techniques, as well as to assist in the evaluation of problems causing loss of metals and other economically important elements during plant processing. Mineralogic studies may thus help develop techniques to optimize metal recoveries. The present paper describes how such factors as the minerals in which the elements of interest are concentrated, their chemistry, the chemistry of the associated minerals, grain size and textural associations with other minerals in the ore, may affect decisions on separation techniques for the recovery of economic elements. A number of case studies are described in which the mineralogical observation of ore samples has revealed the cause of problems experienced in the extraction of select precious and base metals, or has been decisive in the choice of appropriate techniques for recovery.

The explosibility of coal dust has long been recognized by competent investigators as constituting one of the dangers of mining coal and in the use of pulverized coal as a fuel in industrial plants. The Bureau of Mines has carried on extensive series of experiments dealing with this subject, and has not only developed methods for the practical prevention of this danger, but in the, course of these experiments has developed a standard method of determining the relative explosibility of coal dusts and other organic dusts.3 Oil shale contains compounds 'of carbon and hydrogen that are either of a petroleum nature and are strongly ,adsorbed upon the incombustible part of the shale, or else are present in the shale as a compound ("kerogen") which has the property of changing into petroleum-like products when acted upon by heat. The oil shales may contain varying amounts of the organic matter, ranging from a trace to more than 66 per cent, depending upon their richness; therefore, it is important to know whether the dusts formed in mining and handling these oil shales are explosive when mixed with air and if so, to indicate remedial measures. This paper gives the results of explosibility tests of several pulverized oil shale's, selected as being typical of those which in the future may be used in commercial shale-oil production test on a sample of typical Colorado oil shale has been., published in an earlier paper.4

The operation of gaseous mines is a problem, due to the fact that we have not only the ordinary mine accidents to guard against, but have also the ever present menace of a mine disaster involving a large number of human lives, and the destruction of valuable property. In looking over the reports of mine disasters throughout the country in the past several years, we find that methane gas, coming in contact with an ignition agency of some kind, has been the source of at least 75 per cent of our mine explosions. Coal dust, of course, plays its part in propagating the explosive action throughout the mine workings and rendering it more violent and destructive; nevertheless, the initial ignition of a body of explosive gas-sometimes of very small volume-has been the primer for the large majority of our mine disasters. We find also, that the places of initial ignition are most frequently found at the working faces, or in close proximity thereto. This is mainly due to the following reasons: First-The working faces are, as a rule, the places where methane gas is most freely generated. Second: They are places that are most poorly ventilated. Third-They are the places where ignition agencies are most frequently found. The sources of ignition, as a rule, consist of naked lights, the shooting -of shots, defective flame safety lamps, and electrical arcs. The problem, then, in the operation of gaseous mines, is primarily to so ventilate the working faces that an explosive mixture is not likely to occur, and to endeavor to keep away from the working faces all sources of ignition. To do both of these things may seem impossible. Nevertheless, by working along both of these directions, a great many disasters can be avoided. The efficient ventilation of the working faces is paramount. By efficient ventilation, we mean the continuous passing of large volumes of air at the working faces. This can only be accomplished by adequate ventilating equipment, capable of being driven by at least two independent and distinct sources of power, together with large, clean, straight air courses which are free of short turns, constructed areas, and leaky doors and stoppings. In other words, furnish a suitable course for its travel through the mine. Many of us sharpen our pencils and rack our brains to properly estimate the proper size pump and pipe equipment that may be needed to handle a certain amount of water. We estimate the size of copper conductors to a nicety. We immediately rush to repair leaks in our water, compressed air or electric lines. But how many of us give serious thought to the travel of the air through our mines, the health and safety-giving fluid on which so much depends! In driving air courses, a certain economical cross-sectional area should be adopted and maintained as standard. When turns are necessary, they should be made with long radius curves, and the cross-sectional area should be increased on the curves. All entry stoppings should preferably be built of monolithic concrete, with suitable hitches into floor and ribs, and after the concrete has set, they should be examined and leaks due to shrinkage and settling should be eliminated. Overcasts and their approaches should have cross-sectional areas larger than the entries leading to them, to allow for the sudden change of direction, bearing in mind that air wants to travel in straight lines. Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice. The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. Many high-grade manganese deposits of the world occur in marine transgressive sedimentary sequences deposited on stable platforms. These include the Nikopol and related deposits in the Soviet Union and Groote Eylandt, Australia, among others. We suggest that the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains and the vast area of Cretaceous rocks in the middle of North America are favorable provinces for sedimentary manganese deposits because regionally transgressive units are widespread. North America has 16% of the world's land area but only about 0.2% of known high-grade manganese reserves. This disparity is difficult to reconcile in view of the fact that large areas of North America are underlain by rocks that we consider at least broadly favorable to contain manganese ores, and we suggest, therefore, that important high-grade deposits remain to be found in North America.

Mining at the Mt Leyshon Gold Mine in semi-arid north Queensland stopped in 2002. Newmont Australia has recently initiated a thorough post-closure water management study of the site by revisiting the existing information and conducting new water-related investigations. The focus of this paper, which is the first publication on post-closure environmental management of the site, is an overview of the site water quality in view of the sources and spatial distribution of polluted mine water, and also the performance of cover systems in controlling water flux though mine wastes. Since the mine closed the rehabilitation of waste rock dumps and tailings dams have significantly improved water quality in the surface receiving waters. However, the Scats Stockpile, the Heap Leach and Old Plant areas, which can potentially produce acidic waters, enriched with heavy metals and arsenic, are the top management priority. Modelling of the potential transport of contaminants in groundwater needs further investigations. A detailed examination of the waters in seepage sumps showed high concentrations of manganese, cobalt, nickel and selenium, which were previously overlooked. The study also showed distinctive chemical signatures for waters at different locations: the waters draining from scats, supergene materials and waste rocks have distinctly lower pH and higher concentrations of dissolved iron, sulfate, heavy metals, Mg, Mn, U, Se and As. While, the tailings sumps are more alkaline, and are enriched in Na and Cl. The southern tailing sump is characteristically As rich. The waters draining from the supergene materials have higher Cu concentrations. Assessment of the cover monitoring systems showed that although covers pass the design criteria, automated recording of data may ignore any failure of the monitoring system. Recalibration of the moisture sensors not only showed realistic moisture values compared to rainfall data but also showed that the permanently installed system records values that are higher than those of the mobile system. Event-driven recording of data overlooks infiltration events. Besides, with a higher time resolution (daily measurements) the breakthroughs could be clearly detected. Modelling of the water balance in covers is underway and an example is given here. Newmont is currently reviewing water management options and is willing to share the lessons learned.

In the explosives industry, individuals face a multitude of hazards while working in mines, quarries, and construction sites. Safety becomes an ever-present driver as companies attempt to control costs, promote quality service and products, and grow business all while ensuring employees return home safely every day. One of the most challenging hazards that threatens the goal of absolute safety is flyrock. Ensuring that a blast does not result in rock leaving the blast area, thereby creating a danger for personnel in the vicinity, can be complicated due to the multitude of factors. Shot design, geology, operational procedures/techniques, explosive products, security plans, communication methods, and drilling practices can all adversely affect the safety of individuals helping execute a blast through an increased risk of flyrock. Flyrock can also pose a major threat to the public and other non-blasting personnel in proximity. Like many other industries encountering various challenging hazards, the explosives industry has recently adopted innovative technologies to help mitigate the risk of complex hazards such as flyrock. Specific applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly referred to as drones, employed in the explosives industry can help reduce the likelihood and severity of a flyrock incident. This paper explores a case study and theories of how the integration of drone technology within blast security plans, mine planning, blast design, design auditing, and blast area clearance procedures can help to decrease the risk of a flyrock event through the provision of data and information previously unavailable. Multiple opportunities exist during a blasting operation to gather data using drone technology. It is these data-gathering opportunities that can be leveraged to be maximally equipped for the mitigation of flyrock. Better data from drones can be sourced and used in security plans and clearance measures as well as utilized during mine planning and blast design. Increases in the quality and quantity of information during these crucial steps of blasting has proven to be an effective way to increase the peace of mind for explosive end users. This peace of mind, along with design flexibility and adherence to performance, is why the integration and utilization of drone technology is key for effective flyrock risk reduction

"The 4c segment is a part of the ""Oman National Railway Project” linking the mining area in the surroundings of Thumrait and the port of Salalah. It is 90 km long and the last 40 km stretch crosses a mountainous area near the city of Salalah. The project includes the excavation of a 33 km double and single bore tunnel and 10 km of safety tunnels. This mountainous area is a holiday destination for Omanis, thanks to its beautiful landscapes, especially in summer time due to the monsoon rains. The tunnelling design had to take into account both these environmental constraints and the limestone rock formations crossed, which are affected by significant karst features. Given the context, the conventional tunnelling method has been preferred. INTRODUCTION The Oman Railway Project (Fig. 1) covers the construction of approximately 2,150 km of railway line for freight and passenger transport which will connect together Oman’s main towns and industrial sites and it will form part of the Arabian Peninsula railway system “GCC Project”. The non-electrified double-track railway line must guarantee a speed of 220 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains and must guarantee the transit of AAR (Association of American Railroad) H and D plates using clearance envelope according to AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association) requirements. The design alignment must have maximum radiuses of curvature of 3,250m and a maximum gradient of 1.0%. The project is divided into 9 constructional and functional segments. •,Segment 4c will be constructed in the southern region of Oman, close to the border with Yemen, to connect the town of Thumrait with the Port of Salalah. •,Segment 4c will run through the Dhofar region and will be mainly used by the freight traffic which currently travels by road."

"Fluctuation in market price of mineral products has enforced mining companies to cut down their operating costs. One useful way of reducing operating costs in mining operations is to make optimal operational decisions, incorporating efficient mining fleet management systems (FMS). Over the last 50 years, several types of FMS have been developed and introduced in the mining systems around the world. However, there are two major shortcomings in existing systems. Firstly, none of the existing systems consider effects of the short-term plan on dynamic truck assignment. Secondly, most of the existing FMSs make decisions in a way that optimize a specific objective while ignoring others. Herein, we propose a multi stage and multi objective FMS that deals with aforementioned shortcomings of the currently available systems. The developed FMS, in its upper stage, links semi-dynamic operational decision making process to the short-term production plan by simultaneously assigning shovels to mining faces and allocating trucks to the shovels by implementing its first multi objective decision making model. Then in its second stage, in a real time dynamic decision making process, it assigns trucks to shovels and corresponding destinations by optimizing its second multi objective decision making model. The developed fleet management system has been verified using an Iron ore case study and the results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Open pit mining method is the most common method to mine mineral from the earth. Based on Wetherelt and van der Wielen (2011) there exist 2500 open pit metal mines that are categorized as industrial scale mines. Over all of those, the amount of material handled using truck and shovel material handling system is more than the amount handled by all other systems together (Humphrey & Wagner, 2011).It has been proven by several studies that more than 50 percent of operating cost in a truck and shovel based open pit mining operation is accounted for material handling (Moradi Afrapoli & Askari-Nasab, 2017, Alarie & Gamache, 2002, Ahangaran et al., 2012). Thus, introducing even 1 to 2 percent cut in its material handling cost saves huge amount of money for the stakeholders. Over the last 50 years, two major areas have been identified to cut this cost. On one hand mining industries have been implementing equipment with higher production capacities, and on the other hand, researchers have been developing operations research techniques to make dynamic decisions as close to optimal as possible to deduct operational costs in truck and shovel based mining operations."

The wrought alloys of aluminum with small amounts of copper and of magnesium have, with the development of the automotive and aircraft industries, sprung into prominence through the medium of duralumin; but the cast alloys remained in the background because their possibilities in the heat-treated condition were either not recognized or not fully investigated. In 1919, the Bureau of Standards published a preliminary survey1 of this field, which pointed out that, in general, the ultimate strength and the percentage of elongation of the alloys of aluminum with and without magnesium could be improved by so simple a treatment as heating at 932' F. (500" C.) for 2 hr., cooling in air, and aging at room temperature for several days. British investigators, too, working with chill-cast material, found that" considerable improvement in the mechanical properties of copper-aluminum alloys may be obtained from suitable heat treatment applied to castings."' Jeffries and Gibson8 made the first contribution to the literature dealing exclusively with the heat treatment of sand-cast aluminum-base alloys, describing the effect of small additions or of combinations of copper, magnesium, and iron on the response to a short heat treatment comprising heating at 932" F. in a nitrate bath for 1 hr., quenching in fish oil, and reheating at 300' F. for for 1 hr. Their results disclosed the facts that the ultimate strength and the percentage of elongation of sound alloys were usually, and quite uniformly, improved by heat treatment; that with the iron content ranging between 0.36 and 0.88 per cent. and the silicon content between 0.24 and 0.60 per cent. the effect of increasing the copper content (Tables 10

Good toe breakage and a flat working bench after blasting are important parameters to achieve a high productivity during material loading and reduce the necessity for secondary blasting. Good toe breakage requires a proper burden – side spacing design and a suitable sub-drilling. With unfavourable jointed rock mass conditions the use of horizontal bottom holes still can be found as common work practice even that this is associated to high risks.

Introduction It is thirty-odd years since I first entered the mining field by working underground at Anyox, which makes 1t clear that I can qualify as one of the older generation and claim the privilege of dealing in generalities and broad impressions. In this position I find it interesting to re~ view the salient changes that have taken place during the past quarter-century and indulge in some speculations concerning the future, with the hope that my comments may be of value to others engaged in the field of mining geology. As indicated by the title, the treatment is a perspective from a single viewpoint rather than an attempt to give a complete and impartial analysis. This plan, while deficient in some respects, has the advantage of being more specific than one based on .a. compilation of opinions. An additional advantage is brevity, which would be difficult to obtain on a subject of this scope if it were viewed from all angles. In conformity with the general plan, specific references to the literature have been avoided as much as possible, although a number of publications of general nature are listed at the end of the paper. This procedure is intended to give credit to the sources used without making them in any way responsible for the interpretation. The starting point for the discussion is the situation as it existed twenty-five years ago, when, as a recent graduate, I first had a fairly complete picture of it. However there is one impression of an earlier; stage that seems worth mentioning. In one of my first courses in geology the statement was made that some of the leading authorities of the previous generation, who guided geological thought at about the beginning of the century, were inclined to question the value of an association with mining. This attitude was no doubt exceptional, and certainly it was not adopted by the students who laid the groundwork for mining geology in North America. But its existence even in a limited circle is significant m showing how far the application of geology has advanced as the result of the investigations started during the first part of this century.

The Resource Management Act 1991 represented an innovative and unique piece of planning and environmental legislation when it was introduced. Since the Act was passed into law in 1991 it has been subject to nine amendments, many of which were of the ætinkerÆ variety. These amendments recognise that the Act has not been as successful in providing the æone-stop shopÆ for resource users that the Act was hoped to be. The latest and most significant attempt at changing the Act was the Resource Management Amendment Act 2003. The amendments made by the Amendment Act have proved to be largely unsuccessful in achieving any significant changes to the way resources are managed in New Zealand, and have failed to address many of the concerns which drove the original Resource Management Amendment Bill in 1999. The recent decision to discontinue further investment in Project Aqua has once again placed the Act in the spotlight as a significant hand-brake on major projects. This particular event has led to yet another review to be undertaken this year. The review will focus on five key areas:   1.   achieving the right balance of national and local interests; 2.   improving the design and process for local policy formulation; 3.   improving the consent decision making process; 4.   allocation of natural resources (water, air and geothermal); and 5.   supporting measures for building capacity and promoting best practice and implementation at the local authority level.  It is important for the business community and the mining industry in particular to seize the opportunity that this review provides to make sure that any amendments undertaken as a result of the review achieve the aims listed above. The review needs to be considered in light of the current regime for the management of natural resources in New Zealand. In addition to the Resource Management Act 1991, the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Building Act 1991, which form the core resource statutes in New Zealand, there have been other developments affecting the regime. Special legislation over and above the Resource Management Act 1991 has been enacted to protect the Hauraki Gulf and special legislation is currently being considered to protect the Waitakere Ranges in Auckland. In the Hauraki District mining is prohibited in some areas and a plan change mechanism is specified as the appropriate tool to use in the event a mineral resource is to be developed in those areas. The current review is a further opportunity to remedy the inadequacies of the Act.

The rates of solution (of hydrogen in liquid pure iron and in several liquid binary iron alloys were meas-ured using a constant volume technique. The rates of absorption and desorption were found to be equal un-der all experimental conditions. increasing concen-trations of S, Si, or Te decrease the rate of hydrogen uptake but additions of Al, B, Cr, Cu, or Ni have no measurable effect up to concentrations normally en-countered in steelmaking practice. No relation ship was found between the effect of an alloying element on the equilibrium solubility of hydrogen in liquid iron and its effect on the solution rate constant. Mathe-rnatical analysis of the data indicates that under the present experimental conditions the rate of reaction of hydrogen with liquid iron is controlled by transport of gas solute atoms in the metal phase. Comparison of the present resuts with data on nitrogen taken un der similar conditions establishes that the hydrody-nurnic conditions which exist near the surface of a metal bath are best approximated mathematically by a surface renewal model for the case of rapid in-ductive stirring and by a boundary layer model for more quiescent melts. HYDROGEN has long been recognized as being a detrimental constituent in steel. If dissolved in the molten metal in excess of its solid solubility, hydro-gen can be evolved during solidification and cause bleeding or porosity in ingots and castings. In the solid metal, lesser amounts play a definite role in causing other defects such as hairline cracks, blisters, and embrittlement. For significant refinements to be made in metallurgical procedures designed to control or eliminate hydrogen from liquid iron or steel dur-ing processing, available equilibrium solubility data must be supplemented with reliable fundamental in-formation pertaining to the kinetic factors involved in the transfer of hydrogen to or from the metal. The scarcity of such information in the literature prompted the present investigation. PREVIOUS RESEARCH Whereas much of the existing data on the solution kinetics of gases such as nitrogen were obtained during the course of thermodynamic investigations, the solu-tion rate of hydrogen has been found too rapid to be accurately determined by conventional solubility meas-urement techniques. Consequently, little work on hy-drogen solution kinetics has been reported in the lit-erature. Carney, Chipman, and crant1 attempted to study the rate of solution and evolution of hydrogen from liquid iron by employing a newly devised sampling method. Although no significant quantitative data could be obtained, it was observed that the rate of solution was approximately equal to the rate of evolution of hy-drogen from the melt. Karnaukov and Morozov2 stud-ied the rate of absorption and Knuppel and Oeters3 the rate of desorption of hydrogen from molten iron by measuring pressure changes with time in a constant volume system. Karnaukov and Morozov determined the hydrogen pressures over their inductively stirred melts with the aid of a McLeod gage and therefore, were forced to work at pressures not in excess of 40 mm of Hg. Their experimental data conformed to a mathematical correlation based on diffusion control: and the rate coefficients calculated on this basis were shown to be independent of the initial absorption pres-sure. These authors reported the solution rate of hy-drogen to be eight-to-ten times higher than they had found for nitrogen in a previous study. They also re-ported that under identical conditions, hydrogen dis-solves somewhat more slowly in iron-columbium alloys than in pure iron. Knuppel and Oeters found that the desorption of hydrogen from pure iron at 1600°C was controlled in all cases investigated by diffusion in the metal bath as long as bubble formation was sup-pressed. This was substantiated by Levin, Kurochkin, and umrikhin4 who studied the kinetics of hydrogen evolution from liquid (technical) iron while applying a vacuum. Salter5 measured the rate of hydrogen ab-sorbed by iron buttons, arc-melted by direct current, as a function of hydrogen partial pressure in a hy-drogen-argon atmosphere. A carrier gas technique was used for analysis of the hydrogen absorbed. The initial rate of absorption was found to increase di-rectly with the square root of the partial pressure of hydrogen. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Because of the rapid uptake and evolution of hydro-gen by iron-base melts, a constant volume technique was devised in order to obtain meaningful kinetic data over the entire course of the solution process. Apparatus. A schematic view of the experimental apparatus is given in Fig. 1. The hydrogen-liquid iron reaction system consisted of a gas storage bulb con-nected to a meltcontaining reaction chamber through a normally-closed solenoid valve. The gas storage bulb, an inverted 250 ml round-bottomed Pyrex flask was joined to the inlet port of the solenoid valve by a glass-to-metal seal. A more detailed illustration of the reaction chamber is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the Vycor reaction bulb was essentially that de-scribed by Weinstein and Elliott6 with the exception of a shorter, larger diameter gas inlet for this kinetic study. In position, the reaction bulb was closely by an eight-turn coil of water-cooled copper tubing which, when energized by a 400-kc oscillator, provided the inductive heating source. Quarry operators must continue to change and adapt environmental compliance methods to meet the increasingly demanding regulations. To fulfill industry needs, a computer-based decision support system is being developed to facilitate decision making that mine operators are required to make regarding environmental responsibilities. This system can help to determine permitting and compliance measures needed for air, surface water, groundwater, noise, aesthetics, vegetation, wetlands, hazardous wastes, storage tanks and wildlife habitats during the development, operation, and closure phases of mining. Operators will utilize the system's user-friendly interface consisting of mouse driven responses and limited keyboard entries on a desktop computer. The system is easy to upgrade according to the user's needs and changes in current laws and regulations. Data input models, user interfaces, and support of decision making are explained. The program permits inclusion of the decision maker's own insights through "what-if' analysis, in which the user can change ad hoc entries and check the related consequences. Using this approach, the user has complete control over all steps of the decision making process. A storm water example is selected to demonstrate the potential benefits of the support system to environmental decision makers.

IN 1932, Horace Onyett at Oroville, California, built a practical floating washing plant along the general lines as now known, using a 24 in. by 12 ft. trammel; it was fed with a ½ yard dragline bucket, rated then at 200 yards per day. Onyett dubbed his plant a 'Doodlebug' which name has clung to this type of operation ever since. In general, the 'Doodlebug' dredge is the outgrowth of the depression of 1929, wherein many dirt contractors had surplus idle equipment and a few of them ventured to use it for placer mining. Many such plants were impractical and poorly designed and adapted often to locations not suited to the purpose. However out of the general idea came refinements until today dragline dredging has a very definite place in the gold production of the world. Many of the early operators, being mainly contractors without mining experience or technical knowledge of gold saving, geology, or mechanical design, naturally went through stages of trial and error until a workable unit became standard practice. Credit should be given Bodenson Iron Works of San Francisco, who did a notable job of pioneering and building of floating washing plants; also, to Lord and Bishop, contractors of Sacramento, who were among the early operators, and to several others who built and rebuilt their plants until the weak spots were strengthened to take the beating required, and yet deliver a high degree of efficiency.
