"Coal-water mixtures (CWM) of concentrated fine coal may be transported in pipelines but this is influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. The objectives of this study are to investigate the importance of surface charge, solids concentration and dispersant addition on the rheology and stability of a fine Witbank coal-water mixture (<75 m). Zeta potential, rheology and stability were measured with a Malvern Zetasizer, a AR1500EA rheometer and a static rod penetration test, respectively. Sendep 30D, Sendep 30F and Norilose 8058, all supplied by Senmin International, were used as dispersants, at dosages of between 0.1 to 0.5% dry coal (w/w). Solids concentration was varied from 10 to 58% (w/w). The zeta potential was found to be positive at low pH and decreased sharply with increasing pH to a minimum of -50 mV at pH 10. The zeta potential decreased with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest zeta potential of -63 mV was obtained for Norilose 8058 at a dosage of 0.3%. CWM rheology was Newtonian at lower solids concentrations but became non-Newtonian at solids concentrations over 40% (w/w), with an initial yield stress and pseudo plastic behavior. The yield stress decreased sharply with increasing dispersant concentration for all dispersants. The lowest yield stress was obtained for Norilose 8058. The addition of dispersants resulted in significant improvements in stability. A penetration ratio of over 70% was obtained for Norilose 8058 after 10 days. In summary, the addition of dispersants resulted in a decrease in the zeta potential which increased the electrostatic repulsive forces between particles, thus improving both CWM rheology and static stability.INTRODUCTION Coal Water Mixtures South Africa’s energy economy depends heavily on coal. It accounts for about 70% of primary energy consumption, 93% of electricity generation and 30% of liquid petroleum fuels (Eberhard, 2011). The transportation of coal to export markets and power generation stations is a problem in the South African coal industry due to ageing and inefficient rail infrastructure. This problem is intensified by the long distance of coal haulage, delays in the time required to load and unload wagons, and environmental challenges related to air pollution and water contamination. Fine coal may be transported more efficiently and economically in a pipeline as a highly concentrated coal water mixture (CWM). Typically a fine coal CWM will contain 60-75% coal, 25-40% water and nearly 1% of dispersing additives (Atesok et al., 2005; Dincer et al., 2003). However, the transport of CWMs in pipelines is strongly influenced by both CWM rheology and stability. Here, a low viscosity is required to reduce power requirements, as well as good stability for transport and storage. We are regularly told that before making a new investment one should seek the advice of his banker. If we were to place the subject matter of this paper before bankers. other than those who have experience in our mining camps, their reply would probably be evasive. However, if for example: a mining company asks them for a loan and offers as security certain mining investments, they are, in most cases, explosively candid. The idea is preposterous, unless, under Section 88 of the Bank Act, the mining company is able to deposit with the bank, gold or silver bullion, to an amount sufficiently in excess of the loan, to provide for what the banker describes as a reasonable margin of safety in case of contingencies. In addition the directors of the mine personally must jointly and severally guarantee payment of the loan. With any of these conditions missing the banking atmosphere becomes chilly. The local manager explains that the general situation, and particularly European conditions, are so unsettled that head office has warned him that his discretionary powers must not be exceeded under any circumstances.

For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man&apos;s time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don&apos;t always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day&apos;s production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. The Salmita Gold Mine is located 240 air kilometres northea t of Yellowknife on the east shore of Matthews Lake. Salmita is one of several gold showings which are regionally associated with the steep easterly dipping contact zone between mafic, intermediate and fe lsic volcanics to the west and overlying finely laminated argillaceous sediments to the east. The volcanic assemblage forms a narrow 2 m to 7 m wide north to northwesterly trend ing Belt of Yellowknife Supergroup Archaen greenstone rocks. The contact zone exhibits exhalite character and the increased sulphide content provides a di stinct VLF-EM , IP/Resisti vi ty and/or magnetic signature. Gold occurs at or near this contact in three main settings: associated with si liceous vein-like structures; with finely disseminated sulphides within ericitic altered upper fe lsic tuffaceous unit ; or with quartz in narrow shear zones within the overlying sediment . The B-Vein is of the former type with free mi ll ing gold occurring within a highly sil iceous zone having an average widtn of 1.69 m. Alteration is intense within the immediately su rrounding host lithologies and includes the development of si lica, carbonate, sulphide, sericite and chlorite with minor graphite, epidote. tourmaline and scheelite. The mineable zone above the 4th level (-200 m) ha an average strike of 160 m and is divided into three south plunging ore shoots separated by the regional Salmita Shear Zone in the south and by a low-grade structural hiatus in the north. Production from the B-Vein commenced in August 1983 based on a diluted in situ ore reserve of 140,000 t grading 26.6 git Au . As of December 31, 1985, a total of 131 ,537 t grading 27.8 git Au have been mined at a ra.te of 160 t per day and a 96.4 percent recovery, to produce 3,522 ,000 g (113,227 ounces) of gold . Current (January I, 1986) reserves total 45,500 t grading 37 g/t Au down to the 10th level (-500 m) .

"Segregation of impurities during refining of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) is an option to produce solar grade silicon (SG-Si). Directional solidification is a last step in production of SG-Si effective for removal of metallic impurities. The possibility is investigated to use metallic impurities originally present in MG-Si for removing boron and phosphorus. MG-Si has been treated using two methods: 1) alloying with calcium and 2) refining with Na2O-CaO-SiO2 slag, both by controlled cooling. The microstructure of silicon and the impurities distribution have been studied before and after the treatments. Using EPMA phosphorus and boron have been detected in 1-2 wt% concentration range in several intermetallic compounds in grain boundaries after both treatments. This observation points to a different possible mechanism of silicon refining from boron and phosphorus. Controlled cooling improves migration of phosphorus and boron to the silicide phases in grain boundaries, which can be removed by acid leaching treatment.2. IntroductionStandards for silicon solar cells and growing demand on “green” energy require economical and efficient route to the production of solar grade silicon. Refining of cheap metallurgical grade silicon is one of the promising options, where application of existing metallurgical approaches can result in cost-efficient production on industrial scale. Focus in refining is on impurities, which are most difficult to remove: B, P, Al, Ti, due to their large segregation coefficient in silicon and low vapour pressure [1]. Moreover, more environmentally friendly technology in comparison to the traditional Siemens process [2] will be in accordance with societal needs. Based on properties of common impurities in metallurgical grade silicon, alloying refining and slag refining are suggested as competitive techniques having potential effect on removal of impurities harmful for conversion of solar energy [3, 4]. Alloying with Ca followed by acid leaching was found to be effective for removal of Fe and Ti from silicon [5] and to enhance also removal of boron [6] and phosphorus [7, 8]. In the work of Inoue et al. [8] drastically increasing removal of phosphorus from silicon has been observed with an increase of Ca content and a thermodynamics-based explanation was provided. Since phosphorus has been found to condense in the secondary precipitate mainly composed of CaSi2, it can be removed together with iron and titanium by consecutive acid leaching treatment. Slag refining is one of the metallurgical methods proposed to be effective for refining of metallurgical grade silicon from boron [9, 10]. Slags with additions of the following oxides to silica have shown positive effect on removal of boron: CaO [11-13], Na2O [11,14]. Mechanism of slag refining from boron is based on oxidation of boron followed by its incorporation in the slag network [9,11]; the same mechanism is suggested for refining from phosphorus taking into account that oxides of boron and phosphorus are known as network-formers [15]."

THIS paper is a study of the differential flotation of the sulphide minerals in the presence of salts of silver, lead and zinc. In practice, accidental activation due to these salts is more important than their use as reagents to replace copper sulphate. The general method of investigation has been based upon contact tests, the temperature of 35°C. being chosen in conformity with earlier work. Potassium ethyl xanthate and potassium amyl xanthate were selected as collectors and pure sulphide minerals were used. The experimental procedure has been outlined in earlier papers and all solutions were kept carbonate -free.1,4 Contact, or spreading of an air bubble, at a mineral surface indicates the presence of an adsorbed collector film. PURITY OF REAGENTS The xanthates were purified in the usual manner.1 Neither the cyanide nor the sodium hydroxide solutions contained sufficient carbonate to give a precipitate with barium chloride solution. The silver sulphate was prepared from pure silver nitrate by evaporation with concentrated sulphuric acid until there was no evidence of brown fumes. This solution was diluted and the difficultly soluble sulphate washed with water so that unchanged nitrate was dissolved. The resultant crystalline powder was pure white. The lead and zinc salts were prepared by dissolving especially pure lead and zinc in C.P. nitric and sulphuric acid solution and the crystals drained. The standard solutions were checked by titration. It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. RESULTS The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when, zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

"BACKGROUND As of December 2015, there are roughly 475 road tunnels within the United States according to the most recent national tunnel inventory data compiled by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); whereas, there are more than 615,000 highway bridges on public roads. The FHWA estimates that tunnels represent nearly 100 miles of Interstates, State routes, and local routes. Tunnels are part of the national transportation infrastructure and represent a significant financial investment for the owner and, hence, the tax payers. Tunnels, that are not properly maintained, usually require more extensive repairs and consume more resources. Tunnels must provide safe, reliable, and effective transportation even as these structures age and deteriorate. Furthermore, tunnels generally remain in service for extended periods of time due to their very high construction costs. For example, many tunnels were constructed decades ago during two historic periods of highway system expansion; the first period correlated with the era of public works programs linked to the Great Depression of the 1930-40s; and the second period of expansion occurred with the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950-60s. As such, these tunnels are fast approaching 60 to 80 years old. Congress enacted the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which was signed by the President on July 6, 2012. This legislation followed a fatal tunnel incident on July 10, 2006 and a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report1 that noted the importance of conducting regular tunnel inspections. MAP-21 authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a mandatory inspection program for all tunnels on all public roadways (Bergeson and Ernst 2015): To help safeguard tunnel users and to ensure reliable levels of service, the FHWA developed the National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP), which is comprised of the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS), the Tunnel Operations Maintenance Inspection and Evaluation (TOMIE) Manual, the Specifications for National Tunnel Inventory (SNTI), and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE). The data collected from the program will be stored in a National Tunnel Inventory (NTI) database. A comprehensive and refresher training program was also developed to help qualify and certify key tunnel inspection personnel to include the program manager and team leader."

The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

Fire detection using Carbon Monoxide sensors is based on the assumption that a rise in the level of Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere over a fixed, predetermined ambient level is indicative of a fire. The method is simple, reliable, and effective in those mines where the only source of CO is from undesired combustion. Ambience for this purpose is defined as that level of the gas that is present on a day to day basis whose source is not a fire. In a diesel powered mine the level of CO can and does vary so widely from hour to hour and minute to minute that the selection of a predetermined, fixed level represents a compromise between sensitivity and reliability. The compromise is a best of both and worst of both situations and the computer system often resembles the little boy who cried wolf instead of a state of the art early fire monitoring and detection system. Cyprus Coal personnel have developed method of determining the ambient level of CO in the atmosphere on a real time basis and using that dynamic ambient level to determine whether or not a fire exists in the mine. The method has been given the name of Wave Trend Crossing.

"In order to liberate gold from refractory gold ores and concentrates it is generally necessary to oxidise the surrounding sulphide minerals, typically pyrite and arsenopyrite. Traditional methods of oxidation include pressure leaching, roasting and bacterial oxidation. In recent years, bacterial and pressure oxidation have found increasing favour, although these methods are by no means completely satisfactory and each is subject to particular disadvantages.A novel process has been developed as an alternative to the traditional methods whereby electro-generated ferrate(VI) ions in alkaline solution are used to oxidise a pyrite concentrate. This process has been observed to proceed fairly rapidly and could prove to be a more economically viable process, as well as being more environmentally acceptable. As an added benefit, operating in an alkaline environment is advantageous for downstream cyanidation processes.Ferrate(VI) is a relatively unknown species, due mainly to its instability in acidic solutions. However, in alkaline solution it has been observed to be sufficiently stable for use as an oxidant when used under favourable conditions. Ferrate(VI) is most conveniently manufactured electrolytically via the dissolution of high-carbon anodes in strongly alkaline solutions. Some literature has been published on the electrolytic generation of ferrate(VI) and relatively high efficiencies have been observed by both the authors and other researchers.This study utilises both electrochemical techniques and leaching experiments to examine the kinetics of the oxidation of pyrite by ferrate(VI), which is produced electrolytically. Cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk voltammetry and potential step experiments have been used to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation process."

I wish to call the attention of the Institute to a curious subject, brought to my notice last summer by Mr. Begger, the accomplished metallurgist of the smelting-works of the Boston and Colorado Company at Black Hawk, near Central City, Colorado. At these works, the richest auriferous sulphurets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chicago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crnde argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, . - at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation. I am honoured to be given the opportunity to share with you my thoughts on what will be the essential characteristics of æThe Mining Company for the 21st CenturyÆ. For me the 21st century is all about globalisation and the challenges and the opportunities that globalisation presents for the mining industry. To play on the global stage the successful mining companies must develop profiles that are global in: their operations diversity, their partnership relationships diversity, their customer relationships diversity, their workforce diversity, and their shareholder diversity. In my view æbigÆ will count in the 21st century, but big overlaid with quality: quality assets, quality people, quality partners, quality customer relationships, and quality image and reputation. Last year, Rio TintoÆs Leon Davis said when he addressed the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs annual conference that Australian resource companies that wish to become global operators must develop an unequivocal international identity that will make that company a known and trusted quality wherever it seeks to do business. He went on to say that structuring and operating a business in a way that consistently manifests the qualities that inspire respect and evoke confidence is vital. I absolutely concur with what Leon said. Unfortunately, the fact is that, as we stand at the beginning of the 21st century, our industry and many of our companies are no better accepted by the world community than was the case five, ten, 15 or even 20 years ago. In fact, in some cases, the warmth of the acceptance may have subsided. To some extent the demonstrations that we saw recently in Seattle and Davos reflect a growing distrust, disquiet and cynicism in our communities. Here, however, I see an opportunity. While on the one hand the mood of disquiet presents many challenges, it also provides those of us who are willing to get out on the front foot in addressing the issues, and engaging in the dialogue, with a very significant opportunity to create a major competitive advantage. It provides the opportunity to earn respect and the opportunity to develop a reputation as a company that is sought as a joint venture partner and a company that is welcomed by governments and communities. Importantly, also, people will seek employment with such a company and will invest in such a company. The challenge is to change the way we behave and the way we are perceived by all the key stakeholders. Many of our industryÆs traditional skills are now commodities à many can be à and are out-sourced. The new critical skill for the 21st century à the real competitive advantage à will come from creating a real and genuine understanding of our role and what we stand for. Everything we do should demonstrate not only sound business principles, but also an understanding of the political, social, cultural and environmental impacts of our activities - at an international and a local level. This concept isnÆt new - but for large companies such as BHP, where we operate in more than 20 countries with diverse cultures, languages and religions - it requires enormous energy and dedication. It is complex. It is difficult. But I believe it is absolutely fundamental to our future.

Thermodynamic calculations for antimony and its compounds have been hampered by the lack of adequate basic thermal data; much work rains even to fill the more important gaps. This paper supplies heat and free energy of formation values at 298.15° K, for the sesquioxide and tetroxide, based upon new measurements conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were obtained by combustion (bomb) calorimetry, and the free energies of formation were obtained by combination of heat and entropy data. The new values are believed to substantially improve the accuracy of thermodynsunic considerations involving these oxides.

In 1932, Japan took Manchuria, largely upon the excuse that she needed raw materials; in 1935, Italy invaded Ethiopia, largely upon the excuse that Mussolini&apos;s growing nation needed raw materials-in this case oil; from 1933 to 1935, Germany cried out for a greater share of the world&apos;s natural wealth, and since 1938 has invaded or occupied ten other countries, frequently upon the excuse that she needed-and had a right to-more raw materials.

"The modeling of gas-liquid plumes in steelmaking ladles has been the subject of many investigations. In most studies, the “modified” Froude number, based on the momentum of the injected gas, has been employed to characterize two-phase plumes. This approach has several shortcomings and is critically reviewed in the present work. Based on an extensive review of previous work and theoretical considerations, it is demonstrated that the injected momentum and consequently, the modified Froude number has no significance to gas blowing operations in Ladle Metallurgy. Instead, an approach based on the “plume” Froude number, previously shown by the authors as the proper form for Froude similarity, is extended as a simpler alternative.IntroductionGas injection is central to most Ladle Metallurgy operations. During ladle processing, the steel melt is usually stirred by an inert gas like Argon through porous plug(s) fitted in the bottom of the ladle or a lance inserted deep into the melt. The purging serves several purposes viz., homogenizing the melt, flotation of inclusions, enhancing the rates both of refining reactions and dissolution of alloying elements and promoting inter-phase interactions in the ladle.The topic of gas injection into liquid baths has been the subject of several investigations in the past. A great deal of this work, both experimental and computational, was devoted to describing the structure and properties of two-phase plumes as reviewed recently [1]. Generally, the ascending two-phase mixture is sub-divided into three distinct regions [2]: the jet core, transition and the bubble plume, respectively. The jet region, where the momentum of the injected gas is transferred to the bulk liquid, is also called the ‘momentum region’. In a similar manner, the plume is called the ‘buoyancy region’ where the motion of liquid is caused by the buoyancy force exerted by the bubbles. The proper characterization of these regions is important for the analysis and modeling of stirring operations in Ladle Metallurgy. Although many mathematical correlations exist for this purpose, some issues of theoretical and practical interest to the modeling of gas-liquid plumes need further attention."

According to the world bank1, the mining industry consumes up to 11 percent of global energy use. In comparison, 70 percent of mining projects from the six largest mining companies operate in water-stressed regions. To steer the direction of the process industries toward more sustainable practices, more than 40 governments have adopted a price on carbon. This measure includes additional taxes on the use of fossil fuels, trade programs, new standards for renewable energy, energy efficiency mandates, more stringent emissions regulation, carbon offsets, etc. This emphasis is also supported by investors shifting their priorities to reduce risk by focusing on long-term plans, including environmentally friendly operations. The metals and mining industry is at the core of the green energy mix and electrification of vehicles. This new trend creates an astronomical increase in demand for minerals. Under a 2-degree scenario, according to the latest analysis from the world bank, as new energy technologies continue to grow, it is expected that all minerals to double in demand, and the distribution of these materials will depend on their application. • Solar panels, will account for 87% of the aluminum demand, and more than 95% of silver • Wind turbines and geothermal plants will require 98% zinc and 64% titanium. • Solar and wind energy alone will demand more than 74% of the global supply of copper, and this is without considering wiring or other infrastructure to connect the grid • Battery storage accounts for 100% of the graphite and lithium demand. (Hund, 2020) • Other materials, such as nickel and steel, are also projected to more than double in demand as they are cross-technology minerals. These materials require a manufacturing process that is accountable for the emissions proper of the transformation process. It requires that these processes move from a hindsight mode focused on reporting to a forecasting mode based on run-time measurement of GHG emissions. This is a critical first step in companies realizing an economic return for doing the right thing for the environment and their communities.
