This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation , and utilization of coal . This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British committee . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey, in charge , J. W. Buch, Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology; H. J. Rose , Vice - president and Director of Research , Bituminous Coal Research , Inc .; and F. H. Reed , Chief Chemist , Illinois State Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These , together with microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations , are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. , where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproduction of all declassified reports . A Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports is issued weekly by the Department of Commerce , Office of the Publication Board , and is sold by the Superintendent of Documents , Government Printing Office , Washington 25 , D. 1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1977, 12 companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 65% of production capacity. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 31% of the total capacity; Gulf Coast States 23%, Northern States 26%, and other Southern States 20%. Based on estimated producer prices output of primary metal in 1977 Has valued at $4.6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered 'in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1977, building accounted for about 25%; packaging 22%; transportation 21%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 9%; and other uses, 12%.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimination of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To determine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with reference to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope.

THE proper material of construction for a given purpose is that material which meets the requirements satisfactorily at the lowest ultirnatc cost. It is consistent with this principle that most aluminum castings are made of an alloy containing about 8 per cent. copper. This alloy possesses mechanical properties satisfactory for general engineering purposes together with manufacturing characteristics leading to the production of finished castings at low cost. It is to the aluminum industry what gray iron is to the iron and steel industry. Just as some services require "semi-steel," malleable castings or steel castings instead of gray iron, there is a certain and growing demand for aluminum castings of superior strength or ductility, or both. Since the beginning of .the industry producers and others have sought to develop alloys or processes by which such castings could be made. Out of these efforts have emerged many alloy compositions and special processes, of which only a few have had sufficient merit to survive. It is the purpose of this paper to describe those which seem to the authors to offer the greatest promise for the production on a commercial scale of aluminum castings of superior mechanical properties, with special reference to heat-treated castings. The suitability of an alloy or process for actual manufacture is affected by so many factors that the problem of appraisal is not a simple one. Since this is such an important part of the whole subject it is proposed to discuss briefly some of the requirements. The final verdict is of course the result of commercial trial and experience. It will therefore, perhaps, be profitable to employ a somewhat historical method of treatment in discussing the subject of alloy development. Coals may be divided into six classes-anthracite, semi anthracite, semibituminous, bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite. The first three cla~ can be distinguished by dHferences of composition, particularly the proportions of fixed carbon and the ratios of the fixed carbon to the volatile matter in the cools. The last three classes can be distinguished by di:fferences in physical character, chiefly in color and in manner of weathering. Lignite is brown, not black, and has generally a woody look, but it weathers in much the same way as subbituminous coals. On exposure to the air lignite slacks or crumbles. The lumps check and fall into small irregular pieces that exhibit a decided tendency to separate into extremely thin plates. Hence lignite deteriorates greatly during storage or long transportation. The most characteristic feature of the composition of lignite is a large percentage of moisture. '!his high moisture content reduces the fuel value of freshly mined lignite, and the partial evaporation of moisture, on expooure, causes th6 fuel to check and fall to pieces. Consequently, attempts to increase the efficiency of lignite as a fuel involve reducing its percentage of moisture and increasing its ability to endure storage and transportation. "The future of the uranium industry in Canada during the next twenty years will be very dependent on political and social issues on a world scale. Technology, as such, will tend to be of lesser importance. Nonetheless, some technical changes can be anticipated.This paper deals with milling of uranium ore, leaving further processing and nuclear power production to specialists in these fields. An attempt has been made to look at uranium production technology in Canada in relation to that in other countries, and to draw interference regarding future changes that seem probable in the Canadian context. In particular, recent advances in mill equipment are considered.The chemistry of uranium and its relatively low concentration in most ores has been responsible for a completely hydrometallurgical approach to mill processing, and this should continue. In spite of little commercial success to date, pre-concentration of lower grade ores will be researched further in order that these ores can compete with higher grade deposits in Canada.The discovery of the relatively high-grade ores of the Athabasksa region will undoubtedly influence choice of mill processes and equipment. To maintain flexibility and ductility of tunnels crossing active faults, various mitigation measures are being utilized depending on fault offset movements and seismic design criteria. Examples of those approaches are simple bell and spigot joint, articulated joint, and complex deformable longitudinal bolt and spring joint system with seismic isolation washer. This paper presents a summary of tunnel fault crossing mitigation approaches and design considerations using previous relevant experiences in California as well as case histories from Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, Greece, and Italy found in literatures. Comparisons are made between large and small diameter tunnels, transportation, and utility tunnels, as well as bored, mined and cut-and-cover tunnels. Recent innovations, such as Japanese and Italian techniques, for tunnels crossing active faults are also discussed.

A general discussion of the structure of the junk automobile recycling system shows that the generation of stripped automobile hulks and scrapped automobiles is price inelastic. As a result, it is extremely difficult for the price mechanism to automatically achieve an equilibrium that will prevent the accumulation of excessive automobile wrecker inventories and vehicle abandonment by the last owners of scrapped cars. The new shredder processing technology and the new portable flattener technology have altered the structure of the junk automobile recycling system. The shredder technology has increased the demand for processed automobile scrap. This increased demand is reflected in higher prices paid for hulks by scrap processors. The portable flattener has reduced the transportation cost of shipping hulks to processors. The two new technologies have eliminated, at least potentially, the net cost of shipping stripped hulks so frequently incurred by wreckers in the past. The elimination of this cost eliminates the economic incentive for excessive wrecker inventories. Unfortunately, the incentive for last owners to abandon their cars does not appear to have been eliminated by the new technologies. The last owner of an automobile with no spare parts value is still likely to incur a cost by delivering his automobile to the recycling system. Although a subsidy payment is probably unnecessary to reduce excessive wrecker inventories, such a payment might be one solution to the problem of automobile abandonment. However, there are a wide variety of subsidy programs that could be introduced. Before any Federal subsidy program is introduced to reduce automobile abandonment, it is recommended that the program be tested on a limited basis in many different parts of the country.

In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded 1,000. Of this number, some 84.5 per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and lignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and lignite.

This article is instead about an emerging application for diamonds, hard rock percussive drilling with diamond drill bits. Diamond’s outstanding wear resistance has long been taken advantage of in core drilling. However, until now diamond has been less successful in hard rock production drilling in the mining and quarry industry.

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15 000 tpa magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China. Site construction commenced in February 2005, with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005. Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005. Since that time, ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken. This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies the types of serious accidents that occur most frequently at small underground coal mines and describes the strategies that could help prevent these accidents. A wide variety of methods for improving safety are suggested, including improvements in the design of equipment, work procedures, work schedules, safety programs, and emergency response plans, as well as techniques for diagnosing the potential hazards associated with new technologies and work procedures. Some of the papers in this volume focus on preventing specific types of mining accidents--ones associated with materials handling (primarily back injuries), equipment maintenance, improper machine guarding, and ground failure during retreat mining. Although the recommendations in this volume are heavily influenced by research performed at underground coal mines in the Appalachian coalfields, most of the papers contain advice that is equally pertinent to almost any type of mine.

FOR a number of years up to the economic setback of the 1929-1931 period, the greatest proportional advances in the mineral industries in California were made among the substances in the nonmetallic groupings, particularly among the so-called industrial minerals and the salines. During the past year or two, although these have not regained the stride that marked their progress in the preceding decade, we can still record, -some new developments. California produces annually between 55 and' 60 different minerals on a commercial scale. Wood preservation may be defined as the art of protecting wood from decay. In its broadest sense, however, it includes a much wider field. It might be more properly de-fined as the art of protecting wood from destructive agents, such as decay, insects, marine borers, mechanical wear, etc. The earliest data on record for the preservation of organic bodies is found in Egyptian manuscripts. The bodies which we call mummies were impregnated with antiseptics, of which the principal were natrum (sodium sesqui-carbonate), sodium chloride, and sodium sulphate. After being steeped in the solution, they were subjected to either a boiling or baking process in a bituminous preparation. The first attempts in Europe to preserve timber were made by the Greeks and Romans. They extracted essential oils from the juniper and cypress trees, and either rubbed these oils into the wood they wished to preserve, or bored thousands of small holes in the wood and poured the preservative oil into the holes. The famous statues of Jupiter and Diana were carved out of wood. The ceremony of pouring in the preservative oil by the High Priests was a religious pageant of great importance, of which there are many records.

This Bureau of Mines publication identifies areas having sufficient coal reserves to support synthetic natural gas (SNG) development and summarizes those areas having the highest potential. Capital requirements, mining and coal cost factors, water availability, and coal-quality data pertinent to SNG production are presented. Evaluation of individual coal reserve blocks was based upon coal and water requirements of the Bureau of Mines Synthane coal gasification process.

Designing and constructing tunnels in seismic prone areas present unique challenges to both designers and contractors. The Westside Purple Line Extension Project– Section 3 in Los Angeles requires crossing an active fault that may subject the tunnels to extreme structural demands. In order to ensure that the linings will safely accommodate the fault movement, a revolutionary composite section—steel plate embedded in the intrados of the precast concrete segmental tunnel lining was finally selected. Additionally, continuous expansion steel plates over the circumferential joints will be installed to mitigate the potential opening of the circumferential joints.

Operations downstream of mining and beneficiation are still being subjected to increasing scrutiny as highly capitalized projects have been either slow to achieve their targets or have actually failed to do so. Leaching and smelting projects have fundamentally high calls on capital and technology as reaction rates are increased and the capture and disposal of unwanted products are subjected to greater restrictions. Separating value from waste inherently becomes riskier as the purification of the desired product imposes greater demands on the process to produce benign wastes. When we superimpose on the chemistry of the project severe predictions of throughput rates, that bring in facets of manufacturing, we are introducing complexities that the records show are not handled well. This paper discusses some of the more common challenges that operators face and what methods are available and are likely to be successful in preventing the loss of value as projects are brought on-stream. This thinking needs to start much earlier and at greater intensity than our industry has normally chosen to employ.

An evaluation of the use of manually activated, installed,. dry chemical fire protection systems on underground metal and nonmetal mine vehicles is described. In addition, an assessment of the possible health risks posed by the dry chemical extinguishing agents used in such systems is provided. Work involved installation of fire protection hardware on an operating piece of underground metal/nonmetal mine equipment and, via actual fire tests, a determination of the effectiveness of the hardware in extinguishing on-vehicle fires. Two fire protection systems were installed on a Caterpillar 988 front-end loader in St. Joe Mineral's Fletcher mine, near Viburnum, Mo. Both a fully pressurized Safety First CM-20 and a nonpressurized cartridge actuated Ansul A-101 were installed for comparative purposes. Both systems operated satisfactorily during an 8-month endurance trial period which preceded the actual fire tests. Each system was able to extinguish an 18" x 4" class B test fire placed in the engine area of the machine. The health hazards analysis of dry chemical powder consisted of a detailed search of published literature relating to these multipurpose agents. This data was verified via a controlled laboratory analysis of two monoammonium phosphate based powders (Safety First Unikem and Ansul Forey) and an analysis of air samples collected at various locations on the test vehicle during the fire tests. Although the powder was found to be nontoxic, two potentially dangerous thermal decomposition products were identified--ammonia and phosphoric acid. However, later analysis indicated that an operator would not be exposed to dangerous concentrations of either compound if he were to remain outside of the powder cloud. A "Selection and Use Manual for Manually Activated, Fixed Fire Suppression Systems on Underground Metal and Nonmetal Mining Equipment" was prepared both as an, appendix to the report and for distribution under separate cover.
