Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

This paper presents the implementation of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) in the general-purpose commercial software package COMSOL Multiphysics for multi-field thermo-hydromechanical problems in discontinuous porous media. To this end, an exclusive enrichment strategy is proposed in compliance with the COMSOL modelling structure. COMSOL modules and physics interfaces are adopted to take account of the relevant physical processes involved in thermo-hydromechanical coupling analysis, namely: the mechanical deformation, fluid flow in porous media and heat transfer. The model preprocessing, level-set-updates, coupling of the relevant physics and postprocessing procedures are performed adopting a coherent utilisation of the COMSOL’s built-in features along with the COMSOL’s LiveLink for MATLAB functions. The capabilities and performance of the proposed approach are investigated by examining several multi-field thermo-hydro-mechanical simulations with reference to the block caving process in mines.

Introduction Until recently, there were many jobs for mineral engineering graduates. Traditionally, minerals-related career paths available to university graduates stem from rather standard offerings in the disciplines of mining, metallurgy, petroleum, geology, geophysical engineering, and mineral economics. Within each discipline, there exists many career opportunities. In fact, until fairly recently, the most difficult decision for most graduates was choosing among all the available alternatives. Unfortunately, this relative state of euphoria changed quickly and dramatically within the minerals sector. Within two or three years, graduates from minerals-related engineering disciplines found it exceedingly difficult - and then almost impossible - to secure employment in the minerals sector upon graduation. At the same time, there were dramatic reductions in production requirements and, ultimately, mine closings. This resulted in massive layoffs and often termination of professional personnel possessing significant and valuable industrial experience. Obviously, this worsened an already bad employment picture for those hoping to begin a career in minerals. Certainly, there is no universal agreement on what the future offers for the US minerals industry or the career opportunities associated with it. However, there are a number of considerations that deserve study by students, faculty, administrators, and industrial personnel before minerals-related career paths are chosen. Where Will the Jobs Be and How Many? Everyone is aware that the minerals industry is very cyclic. It is not surprising then that job opportunities for new graduates also fluctuate. Typically, there is a two-to-four year lag between industry's engineering manpower needs and the academic community's ability to produce this talent. Due to the response lag, there will necessarily be years when supply and demand do not match. Employment Projections It is extremely difficult to anticipate what the key career paths might be within the next few years. Considerable speculation remains with respect to whether activity in the US minerals sector over the short-, intermediate-, and long-term will improve, remain status quo, or further deteriorate. However, some information pertaining to the prospects for career opportunities in mining engineering was offered by Tingley and Ghose (ME, Sept. 1983, p. 1274) from a study performed by Fenvessy and Schwab. Results from this industry-sponsored survey suggest that the US will experience 700 more mining engineers than needed in 1985, 1300 in 1990, and 1800 in the year 2000. These conclusions were based on the assumptions that future graduate levels remain flat and demand increases 3.6% annually. Educators quickly argued that depressed job markets, coupled with university student mobility, would negate the assumption of flat mining graduate levels in the immediate future. Student Mobility Student mobility from one engineering discipline to another is high. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the tremendous growth in programs such as computer engineering and computer science at the expense of enrollments in the more traditional engineering programs. The ability and willingness of students to quickly change engineering disciplines in response to existing and perceived job market demands have created significant student, faculty, and resource dislocations within universities nationwide. The environmental impact assessment of the Imperial Smelting Process for metallic zinc and lead production in Shaoguan Smelter, China, was carried out by the life cycle assessment method. The detailed inventory analysis of the Input/Output in the process during 1998-2000 was conducted and the allocation was done among the main products of zinc, lead and sulfuric acid, according to the system expansion and substitution principle, The environmental impacts were assessed by using the following five Eco-indicators: Gross Energy Requirement (GER), Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP), Heavy Metal Toxicity (HMT) and Solid Waste Burden (SWB). The results from this study are useful to address the environmental situation of the technology practice in this smelter, and provide a scientific basis for the further improvement.

Some industrially relevant applications for pyrite nano/micro-particles have been proposed in the literature, such as the catalysis of chalcopyrite leaching, the removal of As(III), As(V) and Cr(VI) from solution, as photovoltaic devices, and others. Even though pyrite can be recovered from solution by flotation, for some applications it may be beneficial to provide pyrite with magnetic properties. In this work, a methodology to synthesize magnetic shell/core composites made of pyrite as the shell and either natural or synthetic magnetite as the core is presented. The size of the magnetic composite may range from tenths to hundreds of microns. The synthesis is basically made by stoichiometrically mixing iron nano/micro-particles with sulfur microparticles with magnetite particles, and bringing the mixture in an oxygen free atmosphere from 200 to 300 °C for 4 h. The composites were characterized by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction.

The objective of this research work is to increase the drilling ratio represented in tons per drilled meter (ton/m) to reduce mining costs. One of the key characteristics of this research is the use of the ITH (in-the-hole) drilling rig with a water-powered hammer, also known as Wassara™. The patented Wassara™ in-the-hole hammer is powered by high-pressure water instead of air. To reach the objective, a new design of the blast pattern was implemented considering the following: Burden from 1.7 m (5.6 ft) to 2.8 m (9.2 ft) Spacing from 1.7 m (5.6 ft) to 2.7 m (8.9 ft) Drill diameter from 89 mm (3.5”) to 102 mm (4”) Drilling length from 15 m (49 ft) to 30 m (98 ft) Borehole deviation < 2% The result of this new design is the optimization of the drilling ratio (ton/m); having as a baseline 5.2 ton/m with traditional equipment and obtaining 13.7 ton/m with the ITH drilling, which generates annual savings of $2.43M.

A novel, low-pressure adaptation of Praxair?s coherent jet technology utilizing CoJet lances was developed for application at Inco&apos;s Copper Cliff Smelter where oxygen is available in large tonnage quantities but only at relatively low supply pressures (< 193 kPa header pressure). The project objectives were to evaluate the effect of coherent jet technology on controlling oxygen lance accretion (?horn?) formation and to increase oxygen efficiency in the Inco Oxygen Top-Blowing Nitrogen Bottom Stirring (TBBS) MK Reactor used for converting nickel- contaminated chalcocite to semi-blister copper. This paper describes the development and subsequent implementation and testing of two CoJet lances in this application.

Clay is used in the production and manufacture of materials for the construction of buildings from remote periods. Advances and improvements of its properties have allowed several applications to this raw material. In this work the quality of four types of ceramic tiles manufactured or used in the northwest of the state of Rio de Janeiro and in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais was evaluated. Geometric, physical and mechanical aspects were evaluated according to the Brazilian standard NBR 15310:2009. The results indicate numerous nonconfor- mities with highlights for geometric parameters, surface flatness and yield tests. The nonconformities found in the samples indicate that there was a failure in the production control of the product and in the approval of the control of the lots.

There are presently in use many grinding mill control schemes and concepts. This paper presents one operating method of controlling the particle size of the cyclone overflows for proper metallurgical results and controlling the level of the cyclone feed sump and new feed rate to obtain lowest unit cost of finished (ground) material which is usually at the maximum grinding mill throughput. This system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy. Both of these factors lead to better operator understanding and acceptance. The low capital investment of this system also makes it more attractive at the Buick Concentrator when compared to other more complicated systems utilizing mass flow measurement and a computer to calculate circulating load and infer particle size. Furthermore, it has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value. There are several reasons for maximizing mill throughput at Buick. The milling rate before automatic control was too low when compared to mill throughput increases planned for the future. Through this new operating system, it appears Buick will not have to make major changes of mill motors and speeds to meet the increased? production rate. Also, since power costs continue to escalate, it is desirable to maximize the throughput to the grinding circuit and reduce overgrinding to achieve a reduction in power cost per ton of ore milled. Presently, 45% of the concentrators&apos; total power is consumed in this grinding circuit.

The Kidd Creek base metal deposit near Timmins, Ontario contains around 0.15 wt% Sn, mainly as cassiterite. The cassiterite occurs largely as inclusions in sphalerite, with 85% being in grains smaller than 18.5 micrometres in diameter. Concentrates and tails from the company&apos;s Cu, Pb and Zn circuits were studied to determine the liberations and recoveries of cassiterite in the products. The ore had been ground to about 65.% minus 44 micranetres in diameter (-325 mesh); 55% of the cassiterite was liberated. About 92% of the liberated cassiterite and 70% of the unliberated cassiterite were in the concentrator tails, and 20% of the unliberated cassiterite in the zinc concentrate. The company had attempted to recover the cassiterite from the concentrator tails by gravitational methods but recoveries were low. The grain size of the cassiterite in the gravity Sn concentrate was similar to the grain size of the liberated cassiterite in the concentrator tails. The design of most underground support systems has largely been based upon empirical rules. This design method has proven to be satisfactory in most cases as witnessed by the number of successfully completed works. However, the adequacy of this approach to the developing technology of ground support systems associated with deep excavation has not been substantiated. In cases where the material has definite time-dependent behavior parameters, rules of past experience become extremely vague and conservative. The Spokane Mining Research Center is currently engaged in extensive research to develop rational design methods for underground structures which will account for the many interacting factors such as in-situ properties of the rock mass, excavation methods, proposed types of support system, construction sequence, and environmental variables. This paper describes the microstructural changes that occur when quenched ultrahigh-strength steels containing OA pet C and various amounts of nickel, silicon, and cobalt are tempered. The changes that occur in hardness, yield strength, and martensite diffraction-peak widths when these steels are tempered are related to the precipitation of the carbide phases. An unea$ectedly high silicon content (about 30 pct) was found in the E -carbide phase in a steel containing only 1.5 pct Si. TEMPERED martensitic steels have such wide-spread utility that they have been the subject of numerous investigations, and a sizable amount of literature has developed on this subject.M This investigation, which is a part of a larger program to correlate microstructure with mechanical properties at a variety of strength levels, is limited to the microstructural changes that occur when a quenched 0.40 pct carbon steel (USS Airsteel X-200 steel) is tempered, and to the effects of the alloying elements—nickel, cobalt, and silicon—on these microstructures. Used in this investigation were electron microscopy, electron-diffraction identification of the carbide phases, electron-probe micro-analysis of the carbides, X-ray determinations of retained austenite, and measurements of martensite X-ray diffract ion-peak widths. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical analyses of the eight heats examined eats No. 30 through 37) are shown in Table L Heat No. 30 has the chemical com~osition of Airsteel X-200, and the remaining seven heats contain various amounts of nickel, chromium, cobalt, and silicon. The heats were air-melted in an induction furnace and cast into 8 by 8 in. ingots that were subsequently heated to 2300 and rolled to 1-in.-thick plate. Oversize 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens were rough-machined from the plates and austenitized in air at 1700° F for half an hour and oil-quenched. The specimens were then tempered in air at temperatures of 400° to 1000 for tempering times of 1, 4, and 16 hr, and finish-machined to 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens. Electron micrographs were prepared from Formvar replicas of the midthickness of tensile-specimen shanks that had been electrolytically polished and etched in nital. Electron-diffraction patterns were obtained from carbon-extraction replicas. The replicas were prepared by etching the sample surface in the same manner as for microscopy, evaporating carbon on the etched surface, and re-etching the sample to free the carbon film and the precipitate particles. Electron-probe microanalysis was performed on some of the extraction replicas. To obtain adequate fluorescent X-ray intensities, several thicknesses of replica were exposed to the electron beam so that the results represent an average composition of the extracted particles rather than an analysis of single precipitate particles. Mine planning is the backbone of all mining enterprises and determines the profitability or otherwise of any mining investment. Providing high quality ore and tailings containment at the right time are the main drivers in oil sands mining. Recent environmental and regulatory requirements also makes waste management an integral part of mine planning in the oil sands industry (Directive 074). Due to the limitation of lease area, the pit phase advancement in oil sands mining is carried out simultaneously with the construction of tailings dykes in the mined out areas of the pit. These in-pit dykes are constructed to hold tailings that are produced during the processing of the oil sands ore after an initial external tailings facility. Most of the materials used in constructing these in-pit and ex-pit dykes come from the oil sands mining operation, making it necessary to have a plan for supplying the dyke material. The research problem here is categorised as: determining the order of extraction of ore, dyke material and waste to be removed from a predefined ultimate pit limit over the mine life that maximises the net present value of the operation û a strategic schedule; anddetermining the destination of dyke material that minimises construction cost depending on the construction requirements of the various dykes as per their designs û an operational schedule. There has been developed, implemented and verified a theoretical optimisation framework based on mixed integer goal programming (MIGP) to address the oil sands long-term production scheduling and waste management problem. The research introduced the development of multiple material types and multiple destination optimisation techniques using MIGP in the context of mine planning. This study presents an integration of mixed integer programming and goal programming in solving large-scale mine planning optimisation problems using clustering and pushback techniques.

Industry requires higher speed sheet stacking. High speed sheet stacking requires equipment and techniques to solve several inherent difficult problems, such as the tendency for sheets to sail, and the need for a means to absorb the kinetic energy of the sheet without damaging the sheet. Accurate alignment of the sheets on the stack is another problem difficult to solve. The paper first analyzes the process of sheet handling into its basic elemental steps. It then describes equipment and techniques presently used for moderate sheet handling speeds, with emphasis on how each step in the stacking process is accomplished by the present equipment. The limitations to speed-up of present equipment is discussed. New high speed equipment, either recently introduced to the market, or in the process of development, is described. Magnetic, air float and vacuum conveyor stackers are compared.

Prospecting in its modern context means simply the gathering of information on which, to base plans for the utilization of our mineral resources. One prospecting system familiar to T. V. viewers is the pan of the old gold prospector which, while he prospected, could produce the wealth which financed him in his search. Present day geophysical "prospecting" systems, which are based on the real or supposed responses of an ore specimen, to various stimuli finder controlled laboratory conditions, are promoted as means of reducing the cost of prospecting. The universal drawback to all geophysical systems is that they yield "soft" data which are only presumed to be analogous to ore mineralization until they can be calibrated, by conventional prospecting systems, to each actual mineral environment being tested. By this time the system usually is no longer cheap. Since the raw data are too esoteric to be used until interpreted by geophysicists, usually in the light of their own personal theories and experience, the certainty of multiple interpretation is introduced. The concept of prospecting, at St. Joe Minerals Corporation&apos;s Viburnum, Fletcher and Brushy Creek mines in the new Missouri Lead Belt, encompasses surface diamond drilling for preliminary exploration, the sub¬sequent development of ore body tonnages and grades and the establishment of mining parameters. The predominantly flat-lying mineralized formation is mined by room and pillar stoping. In an operating mine, jackhammer holer are drilled in backs and bottoms of stopes, and chip samples are taken for assay, concurrent with mining. Thus irregularities in ore bodies or nearby discontinuities are not overlooked which are above or below the general mine

This report is a review of current research being conducted in the United States which is intended to increase the utilization of coal ash. In order that this report be as timely as possible, the majority of information was obtained by direct comunication with the people listed in the references. Due to the magnitude of the flyash research program, some projects may be inadvertently omitted. Field research on flyash for use as an agricultural fertilizer is being monitored at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.1 This research is directed at determining the plant nutrients that are available in flyash as well as the quantities of flyash that can be applied to agricultural soil without adversely affecting plant growth, Coal mine spoil and refuse bank reclamation with power plant flyash is being demonstrated by United States Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, West Virginia.2 Numerous highly visible coal refuse piles and strip mine spoil banks contribute to air, water, and land environmental problems. Revegetation of several experimental sites with flyash from bituminous coal-fired power plants was undertaken in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Conventional farm equipment was used at some of the sites while large earthmovers were required at others. The flyash served as a neutralizing agent, dilutent, and soil amendment to provide some nutrients which enhanced vegetation of the barren areas, Estimated cost of reclamation by this method is $300.00 per acre of previously leveled area. This figure can vary considerably depending upon the topography of the site, haul distance, quality of the soil and quality of flyash.

In the event of a sudden nuclear attack upon the United States, it is imperative that vital command and control centers have a high probability of survival. One such vital facility is the North American Air Defense Command Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Known briefly as NOW, this installation when completed will be housed in large chambers excavated out of granite beneath the eastern slope of Cheyenne Mountain (Figure 1). The NORAD COC, a U. S. Air Force sponsored project, will serve as the primary collection and evaluation center for data concerning unknown aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, which might bring destruction to North America. The data will be fed into high-speed computers and electronic equipment from outpost sources - radar, ballistic missile early warning stations and picket ships throughout the world. Electronically controlled display boards will make it possible to evaluate the tracking data instantaneously and to take appropriate defensive action1.
