"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase the capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont Mining in Nevada was faced with such a need in its carbon-in-leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corp., tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop-in replacement screens using a three-dimensional screen panel. The synthetic pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade its urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing and other scalping applications.In spring 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick’s local area representative, met with Newmont to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the CIL train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, NV. The process was originally designed for about 12+ kt/d (13,000+ stpd) but the throughput has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned. Newmont now requires 14.5 kt/d (16,000 stpd) to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity, and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production.Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing’s oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging, and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and, thus, larger machines, screening media that does not blind or a combination of both.In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick had been working on a revolutionary threedimensional panel that would add nonblinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 in July of 2013. It was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

This study investigates the evolution of dimensional properties of grinding products, namely, the mass, the surface area, the length, and the number of particle distributions with the energy input in a ball mill. The size analysis of the mill products enables the calculation of the mass distribution of each material at predetermined size classes and then the determination of the other dimensional properties by taking into consideration the geometry of the particles. Based on the distribution of dimensional properties, an effort was made to determine whether the grinding products are fractal in nature. The effect of material type and grinding conditions on the relationship between the dimensional properties and the specific energy input was also investigated. Special importance was assigned to the study of the specific surface area and the surface area production rate, both during the initial grinding stages and at higher energy levels. The determination of the surface area production rate allows the identification of the grinding limit and the maximum specific surface area which could theoretically be achieved. This approach has as ultimate objective the maximization of energy efficiency and subsequently the minimization of the high grinding cost.

In 1974, iron pellet production in the Great Lakes region reached the 53-million-tpy level, accounting for more than 88% of the nation's pellet production. By 1978, pellet output from the Great Lakes district will climb to at least 78 million tpy. To achieve this 50% increase in output, the US iron and steel industry is investing at least $1.25 billion in new mines and pelletizing plants, mostly in Minnesota and Michigan. The biggest effort is concentrated in the Mesabi Range of Minnesota, the heart of the US steel industry's major iron ore source: here, plans for two new taconite plants-one by Hibbing Taconite Co., and the other by Inland Steel Mining Co.-and three major expansions of existing facilities are already under way to boost Minnesota's total iron pellet capacity from the current 41.2 million tpy to 65 million tpy by 1978. The facilities being expanded are those of US Steel Corp. (Minntac operations), Eveleth Taconite Co., and National Steel Pellet Co.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. Applying geophysical techniques in potential geothermal areas has received: little attention in the United States, though it is widely used and accepted in New Zealand and Italy. In those countries it has been demonstrated that geophysical surveys can be useful in locating new geothermal areas and in directing test drilling programs. Geophysical studies in a thermal region can provide structural information and, if conditions are right directly; locate subsurface hot waters. They can give indications of sub-alluvial rock types and of the thickness of alluvial cover. In certain cases they can be used to estimate the power potential of a hydrothermal system.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

Considerable attention has been given to the restoration of low-level radioactive (<1000 pCl/g) sites contaminated during the early years of the atomic energy program. Current clean-up activities which involve the relocation of contaminated soils to licensed disposal sites have been shown to be very costly due to the large volumes of soils which must be excavated, transported and stored. Recent characterization studies conducted at Virginia Tech suggest that the volume of soil requiring disposal can be greatly reduced using mineral processing techniques such as classification, density separation and froth flotation. This article discusses the application of these technologies for soil remediation and describes a conceptual flowsheet for treating soil samples from two contaminated sites.

This paper examines the likely productivity improvements that have resulted from the introduction of technological advances in underground coal mining during the decade from 1977 to 1987. Included in these advances are the changes in longwall mining; the introduction of larger, more reliable, more repairable continuous miners and shuttle cars; the introduction of remote control and flooded-bed scrubbers; supersections; and other improvements. Procedural improvements are also examined and quantified, the unexplained gains in productivity are attributed to??other factors", among them an increasing maturity of the work force, stabilization of the mining laws, increased labor-management co-operation, and economic urgency.

The Bureau of Mines used portable infrared scanners to examine the surface of pillars and faces in the Somerset mine near Somerset, Colo. Zones of temperature buildup, indicative of potential combustion, were detected with the scanners; their existence was verified by temperature measurements with conventional instrumentation. Temperatures of 32° to 6° C were measured on surfaces with normal temperatures of 26° to 35° C. The infrared instruments and techniques appeared to offer a rapid and efficient method for locating potential trouble spots in mines susceptible to fires caused by spontaneous combustion.

Mining of material without blasting and / or selectively becomes more and more important for high quality ROM-products. Surface Miners have been developed especially for this purpose. The cutting technology of these machines has been improved, so that harder material as well as wet and sticky materials can be cut with better results now. Especially the cutting drum design and more precise drum manufacturing process now allow production and equal tool wear over a long period. The better knowledge of rock parameters influencing the cuttability and cutting results allow higher production, less cutting tool wear and therefore reduced production costs.

The history of underground coal mining has developed through the years from a manual digging and loading process to the highly mechanized pro- cess that it is today through the use of electric power. Mine power systems have closely followed the continued pattern of improvement and mechanization, through necessity and the application of technological advances, At the beginning electric power used in coal mines was confined to haulage. Since d-c power was better suited to traction drives, mine power systems naturally developed using direct current. During this development, a number of street railway systems were in service, using 550 volts, and it was natural that mine trolley systems went in at 550 volts. As machines for mining operations developed and the number of operating mines increased, a safety hazard developed through the use of 550 volts. Most regulating agencies opposed the use of 550 volts, and after a time the maximum voltage permitted was limited to 300 volts hot line to ground. Up until this time most mines had operated with one central generating station, which served utilization power to the whole mine. Power demands were not very great and transmission losses were within reasonable limits.

The identification and characterization of lithographic iron and sulfur oxidizing bacteria in the 1940&apos; s. opened up new possibilities and challenges for the mining and metallurgical industries. These were exploited during the 1950&apos;s and&apos; 1960&apos;s, when it was demonstrated&apos; that mining wastes and complex unused mineral resources could be economically treated by bacterially assisted heap and dump leaching processes?. During the 1970&apos;s this technology grew into a more structured discipline called "biohydrometallurgy". In the l980&apos;s efforts were devoted to the identification of a variety of organisms involved in naturally occurring leaching processes. Further efforts dealt with the elucidation, of leaching mechanisms; the leach ability of nickel, coban, zinc, and precious metals; the desulfurization of coal; and diverse biosorpion phenomena. The application of genetic engineering techniques for the improvement of microbial performance was also initiated?. Current trends in biohydrometallurgy include improvement of many of the techniques noted above, as well as application of leaching. technolog.ies to. environmental remediation scenarios. These activities afford considerable opportunities for research in the 1990&apos;s. For example, bioremectiation of abandoned mining and processing sites requires development of new and economically viable technologies capable of removing low concentrations of toxic metals from high volumes of solid and/or liquid wastes.

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) has been evaluated as a technique for monitoring the quality of an industrial zinc sulphate electrolyte. The basis of the method involves measuring a change in the polarisation of the zinc nucleation reaction at an aluminium surface and relating this to the impurity content and/or the overall quality of the electrolyte. Specifically, the technique aims to be able to indicate and quantify detrimental synergism between impurity elements, something which traditional analytical techniques are incapable of providing. The technique has found some success with regard to monitoring glue additions in a range of metal electrolytes. It has been found that investigations by a number of workers over the past 15 years have produced variable and often misleading results due to the inadvertent use of commercial purity aluminium working electrodes. It has been shown that impurity elements in the working electrode can give rise to a range of responses that are not obtained when pure aluminium is used and that the response is variable due to the lack of surface homogeneity of commercial purity aluminium electrodes. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that previous detection limits reported in the literature were based on the presence of additional peaks in the cathodic scan and not polarisation effects. The results of this study have shown that when a pure aluminium working electrode was used, the method was incapable of detecting any change in polarisation for an electrolyte containing three common impurities (Co, Ni and Ge), at concentrations that would significantly reduce optimum electrolytic performance. A range of methods was tried to sensitise the technique, including raising the temperature and acidity, and adding antimony in order to induce some synergism. In all cases the polarisation response was unchanged. Consequently, apart from the commercialised application for monitoring additions of antimony and levelling agents such as glue, CV has very limited application as an electrolyte screening technique.

An experimental investigation was carried out to study the rates of reduction of iron oxides dissolved in liquid Ca0-SO2-A203 slags by Fe-C droplets at temperatures ranging from 1325 OC to 1550 OC. The %FeO in the slag was varied from 5.5 to 18. Flash X-ray images were employed to observe the behavior of Fe-C droplets in the slags during the reactions and for determining the slag-gas-metal interfacial area. Effect of P205 in the slag and sulfur in the droplet was also investigated. The reduction rates were determined by measuring the volume of CO evolved as a function of time and the estimated slag-gas- metal interfacial area. The reduction rates have increased with increasing %FeO in the slag and the slag temperature. In view of the lack of phase equilibria data of vanadium-bearing oxide system and the desirability of them for design or optimisation of vanadium extraction process, the phase equilibria relationships of V2O3-FeO-SiO2-CaO(15 mass per cent) system were determined experimentally and then an isothermal section phase diagram of this system was constructed. Totally, 81 samples of different composition were equilibrated at 1623 K for 48 hours in iron crucible under Ar atmosphere. The equilibrated samples were quenched quickly in cold water, and then the phase constituents of all the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) measurements.

During the summer of 1930 the average daily oil production of Rumania registered a new peak at 128,000 bbl. per day. The estimated potential production as of September, 1930, was as high as 235,000 bbl. per day. During the latter part of the year, by mutual agreement, the operators decided to curtail their output to about 100,000 bbl., which brought the average for the year to 116,600 bbl. The total production for 1930 was 41,572,000 bbl. (last month estimated) as compared with 35,757,000 bbl. for 1929, or an increase of 16.3 per cent. over last year&apos;s production. The production for the last 10 years is given in Table 1. The curtailment of production was prorated per company, based on its total estimated potential production as of September, 1930, and not per field. As a consequence, at present there is little development of protected or slightly productive areas; viz., Arbanasi, with an average production of 1750 bbl. per day, dropped to less than one-third after curtailment came into effect. Moreni, with an average production of 92,000 bbl. per day, while producing 58 per cent. of the country&apos;s total output in 1929, went to 67 per cent. at the beginning of 1930 and to 75.2 per cent, towards the end of the year. The modified Mining Law of 1929 is still in effect. This law withdraws the restrictions set on foreign capital by the law of 1924. As a consequence a large percentage of proven state land was alloted through competitive bidding to foreign companies. A NEW preparation plant has been put in - operation to treat coal from the recently opened Concord mine, located about 15 miles west of Birmingham, Ala., by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., a U. S. Steel subsidiary. The mine produces metallurgical grade coking coal from the American seam for use as coke in the company&apos;s blast furnaces at the Fairfield and Enseley works. The capacity of the operation is 1000 tons of run-of-mine per hr, approximately half of which is delivered to the by-product coke plant at Fairfield after beneficiation to metallurgical grade. The remaining portion of the mine run is rock and refuse removed during preparation. No boiler coal or other fuels are produced by this mine. Preparation of the coal is done both under- ground and on the surface. The underground primary crushing station removes some tramp iron, and screens and crushes the oversize, most of which is rock, to protect the main slope conveyor.
