The Australian Magnesium Corporation Limited (AMC) is constructing the worldÆs largest magnesium metal plant at Stanwell, 24 km west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The $1.3 billion, 97 000 tonne per year plant is scheduled to commence production in mid-2004. It will produce magnesium from magnesite using the innovative, locally developed AM Process Technology which enables magnesium to be produced at internationally competitive costs. The technology will enable the plant to have the lowest environmental impact of all the available magnesium production processes. The project will meet current world-best-practice environmental and emission standards while on a life cycle analysis, magnesium produced by the Stanwell plant will result in net reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. Magnesium is the lightest of the structural metals. Its high strength to weight ratio and ease of casting and machinability makes it particularly suitable for the manufacture of light weight automotive components. Reducing the weight of motor vehicles through the use of light weight materials such as magnesium is the current primary means adopted by the automobile manufacturing industry to improve motor vehicle fuel efficiency and the lowering of emissions of greenhouse gases. The Australian Magnesium or AM process has been developed over the past decade by AMC in conjunction with the CSIRO to produce magnesium from magnesite mined at AMCÆs Kunwarara deposit. Over $200 million has been spent developing the AM process, designing, building and operating a demonstration plant at Gladstone and to complete an environmental impact statement and receive environmental approvals as well as funding for the commercial Stanwell Project. The paper outlines the development of the AM process technology, the operations of the Gladstone demonstration plant confirming the process technology, its operating costs and environmental performance. The paper covers the particular attention that was given to minimising the production of CHCÆs, the development of new cover gases for molten magnesium, the minimising of emissions of greenhouse gases and the life cycle analysis of magnesium as a replacement for steel and heavier metals in motor vehicles which confirmed its use resulted in a net reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. The project received both Commonwealth and Queensland Government environmental approvals by August 2000.

In a study of the blast-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines has made many experiments for the purpose of determining the exact nature of the combustion of coke in the neighborhood of the tuyeres. Two papers1 presented at a meeting of this Institute discussed somewhat the practical aspects of coke combustibility in its relation to the operation of the blast furnace. In a later paper,2 Sherman and Kinney discussed the possible effect of variations in the combustibility of cokes on the furnace operation, and find that the "reoxidation theory" of Koppers and the "heat concentration theory" of Brassert³ are insuffcient to explain the variation in the conduct of different cokes that has been observed by furnace operators. In their report to the D-5 Committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, with which the Bureau of Mines has been cooperating, Perrott and Fieldner4 seem to agree with Sherman and Kinney that, for practical purposes, the nature of the combustion of coke at the tuyeres of any furnace is constant and is affected neither by the physical properties of the coke nor by the nature of the furnace operation. They omit as unimportant any tests on the combustibility of coke from their proposed methods for standard tests on coke. In the last two papers, it is pointed out that performance tests, in which all other factors except coke quality are kept constant, are to be desired and

Sixteen steels containing different combinations of chromium and molybdenum, in amounts up to 5 per cent of each element, were examined for microstructure and hardness after air cooling and after furnace cooling from suitable austenitizing temper- atures. Diagrams summarizing the structnres and hadness resulting from these two cooling rates are presented (Figs. 3, 4, 7).t Data were also obtained on the influence of these two elements, individually and in combination, on the depth of decarburiza-tion observed after furnace cooling (Fig. 8). Composition of Material The chemical composition of the steels investigated is given in Table I. The plain carbon steel was made in a 2 5-ton Heroult electric-are furnace, while the alloy steels were made in a 4.5-ton Ajax-Northrup elec- tric induction furnace. The cast ingots were hot-rolled to 1.75-in. bars. Air-cooled Series The I.75-in. bars were forged to flat plates, 0.25 in. thick, from which specimens 0.5 in. wide by 2 in. long were cut. The specimens were pretreated to improve their homogeneity by heating to 1830°F. (I000°C.) for 20 min. and oil-quenching. They were then reheated to 1740°F. In Victoria’s onshore Gippsland Basin, geology is driving brown coal developments, and geologists are key decision-makers. Prompted by volatile energy prices and the likelihood of a carbon constrained future, significant work has been carried out on the next generation of technologies to be applied to this giant resource. These include new-generation gasification technologies, coal conversion processes yielding products as diverse as diesel and fertiliser, drying technologies producing thermal and metallurgical coals and in situ conversion processes. However, coals aren’t coals, and brown coal available for new projects will have different quality parameters and mining economics from that currently mined.New projects are likely to be developed on coals with moisture contents averaging 60 per cent and corresponding low energy values. Whilst ash values will be low, averaging just 5 per cent (dry basis), this will at times approach 10 per cent, which is a level that would challenge the installed-generation technologies. Sulfur values will average 0.4 per cent (dry basis), but at times exceed 0.6 per cent, requiring technologies that address the potential for sulfur dioxide emissions. Whilst localised high levels of the fluxes iron (>1 per cent dry basis) and sodium (>0.3 per cent dry basis) would increase fouling of installed technologies, they may be suitable for selected next-generation technologies.Project viability for this next generation of technologies will be strongly influenced by mining cost, and geologists are playing a role in identifying higher-value coal. At its simplest, this is being achieved for open cut mines through regional, vertical strip ratio assessments, which are considered a first-order proxy for mining cost. Follow up assessments are incorporating mining and processing cost, coal quality penalties and product revenues. At a regional scale, it is informing the likely location and relative timing of future mine developments, as well as thinking around rehabilitation strategies, infrastructure and land-use planning.For deeper coal, factors like macro permeability, the ability to isolate seams from aquifers, groundwater chemistry, pressure temperature conditions, connection with groundwater recharge and in situ biota are being used as vectors to in situ coal conversion opportunities.Matching coal to the next generation of technologies has benefited from regional-scale geological studies of coal quality and mining economics, and has benefited from early engagement between geologists, technology developers and project proponents.CITATION:Maher, S and Love, G, 2014. Underground excavations exhibit different hangingwall conditions in response to varying geotechnical and mining situations. These differences need to be quantified so as to accurately determine the effectiveness of the mining and/or support strategies. A useful tool for the quantification of these differences is hangingwall profiling. Two methods of hangingwall profile measurement are described?termed irregular and periodic methods. Several data analysis techniques are reviewed for these methods and the suitable ones are discussed in detail. For irregular data the suitable techniques are the determination of the length, the average of the profile and the average absolute deviation from the mean of the profile. All of these techniques as well as determination of the moving average of the height and examination of the spectral image of the profile can be successfully applied to regular data. The effect of preconditioning on the hangingwall is discussed as an example and it is quantitatively shown that it results in improvements of conditions. The techniques described allow the engineer to quantitatively identify the appropriate support type or mining strategy and thus represent a valuable decision-making tool. It is suggested that these techniques should be employed on a routine basis by the rock engineers on the mines as part of their geotechnical classification, as well as support manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of various support types.

"Ni-Fe alloys have an inverse magnetostrictive effect (Villari effect) in which its permeability varies according to the ·applied strain. This alloy film has a potential for application as force sensors such as torque sensors, tension sensors and so on. Electrodeposition is promising as a technique for preparing Ni-Fe alloy film because of its convenience and economy. In this paper, the effects of electrolysis conditions on the magnetic properties of electrodeposited Ni-Fe alloy films were investigated. Hysteresis loops of Ni-Fe alloy films on copper substrates from sulfate bath were measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The films of low coercivity, which were preferred when used as a force sensor were obtained by introducing certain additives to the sulfate type bath.INTRODUCTIONNi-Fe alloys show an inverse magnetostrictive effect (Villari effect) that their permeability varies depending on the applied strain. The films of this alloy have a potential for application as force sensors such as torque sensors, tension sensors and so on. The authors et al. tried to prepare Ni-Fe alloy films using the sputtering technique, and produced a prototype of Ni-Fe alloy torque sensor [I]. The sensitivity was higher in the torque sensor thus produced than the strain gauge type one, and this torque sensor enables non-contacted detection. It showed excellent durability and reliability. However, the formation of Ni-Fe alloys by sputtering requires higher costs and brought an another problem that the shape of the substrate on which the film was formed was considerably limited. This causes a hindrance to the wide-range application of the force sensors. Electrodeposition is promising as the technique for preparing Ni-Fe alloy films because of its convenience and economy. In this paper, the effects of the conditions of electrodeposition on the magnetic properties of Ni-Fe alloy films were studied."

"Although lead, zinc, copper, and iron sulphides have been known for many years in the Bathurst region, the existence of large massive deposits was not known until the discovery of the Brunswick orebody in 1952. This was followed by the discoveries of the Anacon orebody in 1953 and the American Metals orebodies in 1954. There is no question as to the great importance of these large massive sulphide deposits, and no doubt that other sulphide deposits are to be found. The problem, of course, is where and how to find them.The discovery of the Brunswick and Anacon orebodies is attributed to geophysical work. The original discovery of the American Metals deposit is generally attributed to a regional airborne electromagnetic survey.It is generally stated that the Bathurst area is a geophysical camp, and this is essentially true, but in this highly competitive search for orebodies it is obviously impossible for an individual company to cover the entire area by a comprehensive geophysical survey. Some means other than geophysics must be used to narrow the target. The quickest, cheapest, and simplest method is geological investigations.It has been stated that nothing can be accomplished by geology in the Bathurst region, since the camp is largely covered with overburden. This is true only insofar as detailed work on certain properties is concerned. It is not true of the larger regional picture. Outcrops are scarce, but angular float is abundant, and precedent shows that angular float has moved but a short distance from its source.GeologyAeromagnetic maps published by the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys are the best guides to the geology and structure of the area. These maps supply factual information concerning the underlying rocks. When coupled with field investigations, they are very useful in the interpretation of regional geology and the selection of favourable areas. The discussion of the geology is accordingly centred upon the aeromagnetic maps. The following is essentially a working theory, based on geological facts as best reconciled with all other available information,"

Since 1950, the traditional process has been dominating the production of lithium compounds from spodumene ores to sustain the lithium market because of its economic viability and the markets need for technical grade (99.5% purity) product. This traditional process includes thermal conversion, acid roasting and lithium leaching. However, this process has not been challenged and very few studies have tried to explain its limitation (95% lithium yield) or optimize the thermal treatment. Here, α to β spodumene conversion and lithium extraction were performed in a rotary kiln on a 2 mm to 2 cm spodumene concentrate instead of a micrometric one using a 1050 °C, 30 min conversion treatment and 250 °C, 30 min, 30% H2SO4 excess leaching treatment. X-Ray Diffraction analyses were performed on the converted material to determine the conversion rate by Rietveld analysis. It was observed after thermal treatment that the α-spodumene particles fractured and divided while the impurities remained compact. A sifting was performed after thermal treatment and it was determined that 65% of the initial mass became finer than 180 μm. X-Ray diffraction analyses and lithium content measurement were performed on both fractions and it was determined that the finer fraction had a very high lithium content of 3.24 wt%. Lithium extractions were performed on both fractions separately. While the coarser fraction’s lithium yield was only 61% the finer fraction’s lithium yield went up to 99% without any additional treatment. These observations may open more economical ways for the traditional process by potentially bypassing two third of costly steps such as grinding.

FEBRUARY 15-18 will be the outstanding dates of the month for members of the A. I. M. E., for then the 141st Meeting of the Institute is to be held in the Engineering Societies Building, at New York. What with 41 technical sessions, the Annual Business Meeting at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon,, two sessions of the Section and Division delegates, minor committee meetings, and the many luncheons and dinners, the Dinner-Smoker, Informal Dance, President's Reception and the Dinner-Dance, the opportunity will be limited to do- more-than cast sheep's eyes at New York's other multitudinous attrac¬tions until the meeting is over. The technical program is diverse but well organized. The sessions are almost equally divided among the four days, with ten on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and 11 on Thursday. The meeting opens Monday morning with registration. Be sure to attend to this detail. Failure to do so may have its repercussions at the meeting and throughout the year.

Indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in New South Wales has created a serious fire hazard and increased air pollution.A survey of numerous dumps, as well as particular investigations of one badly-constructed dump, showed that factors conducive to ignition and propagation of fires in waste dumps were high contents of combustible material (coal, pyrite, wood. paper. grease), size segregation leading to ready movement of air and moisture shape of the dump (e.g. protruding sections or porous junctions), high ambient air temperatures, bush fires, and even deliberate lighting.Control methods applied in the past tended to be haphazard and unsuccessful. Under Australian conditions the technique recommended for control of existing dump fires, based on experimental work, is to spray the dump with a chemical fire retardant (e.g. a 2 per cent solution of sodium tetra borate and ammonium phosphate), to cover the dump with a suitable soil, and to seal the surface with a I per cent solution of aluminium sulphate or sodium metasilicate. The recommended method of dump construction to prevent fires is to level and seal the site, to construct a firebreak around the dump area, and to build a rectangular dump with minimum size segregation and compacted surfaces.

In early 2008 we were asked by a quarry to become involved in a conflict with a pipeline company concerning blasting near one of their underground high pressure gas lines. The pipeline company, without the quarry’s knowledge, had sought and obtained a temporary restraining order against the quarry forbidding them from blasting near the pipeline.

ROASTING FERRUGINOUS ZINC-SULFIDE ORES IN 1912, Mr. J. B. Ideating was developing an electrolytic-zinc process for application to the ores of the Bully Hill mines of the General Electric Co. These ores consist of blende and pyrite so finely crystallized and so intimately mixed that no mechanical separation of the individual minerals had been found possible. The ore was reduced to about 60 mesh and roasted in a hand-rabbled reverberatory furnace preparatory to leaching with sulfuric acid. The extractions obtained were quite irregular, varying from a minimum of about 70 per cent. to a maximum of about 90 per cent. This irregularity led to the construction of a small electrically heated roasting furnace, and to the study of roasting under definitely controllable conditions. From time to time, these studies have been extended to other ores. Several commercial-plant operators profess to have gained useful information from the results of these studies and it is hoped that their usefulness may be extended by this publication. EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRIC ROASTING FURNACE The furnace used for experimental work is shown in Fig. 1. One fire-clay sagger, or pot, was set within another and the space between the two filled with Silox heat insulation. The hearth is a cast-iron plate with an imbedded ribbon of nichrome wire; this wire heater is connected to a potential regulator, which permits a very close voltage control. A mechanically driven arm is fitted with rabble blades so arranged that a uniformly thick ore bed may be maintained indefinitely. This arm is usually driven at about one revolution per minute but its speed of rotation can be varied as desired. Compressed air is led into the furnace through a meter, and it was found necessary to preheat the air in order to secure the definitely isothermal conditions sought.

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

Miners can be exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV), when sitting or standing to operate mobile equipment. In order to prevent vibration-induced injury it is important to understand how miners can be exposed to vibration, the health risks associated with vibration exposure, methods to evaluate vibration exposure, and strategies to reduce vibration exposure. WBV exposure typically occurs when operating mobile equipment, such as a load-haul-dump vehicle, haulage truck, or dozer. The probability of health effects such as low back pain, neck pain, headaches, and gastrointestinal track problems occurring from daily vibration exposure can be determined based on criterion values published in ISO 2631-1 and EU Directive 2002/44/EC. A special case of WBV termed foot-transmitted vibration (FTV) occurs when a miner is exposed to vibration that travels through the feet. FTV typically occurs when standing on vibrating surfaces associated with the operation of locomotives, jumbo drills, bolters, or raise platforms; however, there is no set standard to evaluate health effects associated with FTV. Recent medical evidence confirms workers exposed to FTV can develop cold induced blanching of the toes, in addition to numbness and tingling in the feet and toes. In order to reduce the risk of adverse health effects from exposure to vibration, the hierarchy of controls (elimination; substitution; engineering; administration; and personal protective equipment) should be followed. Best practices should be used to minimize vibration exposure through equipment purchases (i.e. vehicles with lower vibration emissions and seats that attenuate vibration), reduced driving speeds, and improved road maintenance for example. The elimination of other risk factors, which increase injury risk when combined with WBV exposure, such as awkward working postures, should also be eliminated. Very little is known about FTV exposure therefore further research is required in order to develop exposure standards and identify prevention strategies.

"PART 2 OF 2 (CONTINUED FROM SUMMER 2006 EDITION) CONSTRUCTION ISSUES (cont’d) The Influence of Ground Conditions on Collapse Sand and gravel strata provide frictional resistance to support active earth pressure. The angle of internal friction has only slight influence on computed stability. Sand and gravel material design parameters can be defined with SPT N-values. Silt strata should be analyzed using internal friction. Definition of soil parameters should be performed by laboratory testing. Cohesive materials, especially soft clay and peat, require careful definition for design. Shear strength should be determined by laboratory testing. Work platforms constructed over granular strata improve the ground resistance by increasing confining pressure. However, temporarily increasing overburden stress on cohesive ground reduces trench stability. If the ground contains soft cohesive deposits which are not normally consolidated to the construction overburden, these must be stabilized before attempting trench construction. Use of wick drains and surcharge fill to improve the ground is recommended. Ground stabilization work requires time, and should be performed by the Owner prior to trench excavation. The addition of cement, stone columns, or other measures to support trench excavation equipment is typically determined to be more expensive and less dependable than ground improvement. Excavation through peat can be especially problematic. Peat materials rapidly compress when earth pressures exceed preconsolidation stresses. Backfill materials provide a horizontal stress on the trench wall which can exceed the bearing capacity of peat. As the peat compresses, the trench becomes wider, and slurry levels drop and trench stability can rapidly deteriorate. If the peat is the closure layer, a shallow key is recommended. If peat is present on the trench wall, preconsolidation with surcharge is recommended. Bottom preparation and Backfill Placement Trench wall stability is a temporary condition which must be controlled by proper design and construction of work platforms and slurry features which influence ground support. Backfill materials and intimate contact of the backfill with the closure layer are permanent conditions which are the end goal of the work. The most common reason slurry trenches fail to provide working barriers is improper bottom closure. Either the closure layer is not engaged, or the backfill is not in intimate contact with the closure layer. This can result from construction problems associated with sidewall collapse described above, slurry performance and/or degradation, backfill placement methods, and failure to maintain the trench bottom clear of sediment prior to placing backfill."

The quantitative separation of tantalum from columbium has been obtained through several liquid-liquid extraction processes. The valuable metals are separated by selective extraction from organic feed solution using a mineral acid or by selective extraction from aqueous feed solutions employing an organic solvent. The greatest degree of separation was obtained when organic ketones, particularly methyl isobutyl ketone, were used. Approximately 200 combinations of various organic solvents and mineral acids were tested as possible separation systems in which the tantalum or columbium content was extracted from organic solutions of the anhydrous pentachlorides.

Civil construction is a sector of extreme impact in the Brazilian economy, with construction and demolition waste (RCD) having an extreme impact on the amount of urban solid waste. In this research it was proposed to propose a way of using these residues in the construction of concrete artifacts for structural use. Concrete specimens with sand substitution by RCD were produced in different percentages as a way to contribute to reduce,recycle and reuse thi large amount of waste from the construction industry. The objective of this work was to study the mechanical properties of structural concrete with total and partial replacement (25, 50, 75 and 100%) in sand mass. The results of the compression test indicate good quality for concretes with mass substitution of up to 75% per RCD.
