An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are suitable chemically under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke regardless of preparation. This report is one in a county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Mingo County, W. Va.

Today's coal mines are turning more and more to belt haulage as the key system to transport coal out of the mine. The advantages of using belt for both intermediate and main haulage are numerous. Belts are reliable high capacity haulage mediums that can be utilized at low operating costs. They are adaptable to rolls in the coal seam and can handle relatively steep grades. They are not noisy, operate with a minimum amount of labor, and are easily extended and retracted. Belts require the least power of any haulage medium, are easily controlled by push- buttons and interlocks, and present low fire and safety hazards. Belt haulage can also be the largest source of operational problems for mine management when not installed correctly. This chapter and Chap. 6 concentrate on proper installation of both the static and dynamic components of efficient belt haulage. This chapter looks at the static system component, composed of the belt drive, its installation and operation, as well as belt takeup and transfer point construction. These components do not change readily over the life of the installation, hence the term static system. Chap. 6 discusses the dynamic system of belt line construction, which includes belt splicing, breaking down and reanchoring the tailpiece, and extending the belt line, plus operational and maintenance items for belt operation. This chapter is divided into three major topics. The first is a general discussion covering the points necessary for designing an efficient haulage system; the second looks at installing belt drives, head rollers, and takeups, and the third discussion centers on installing efficient and effective transfer points along the haulage system. Each will address the design and construction issues facing the engineer or construction supervisor in charge of installing the system. Before looking at the static system, it may be useful to review some of the basic design factors and considerations of all belt haulage systems. The material usually carried on an underground belt is a mixture of raw coal and rock, commonly known as run-of-mine (ROM) coal. This mixture has certain material characteristics that guide the mining engineer to the final and proper belt selection. The characteristics looked at most frequently are: 1) Angle of Repose is the angle at which the material will freely make a pile. Most ROM coal averages a 35"-39" angle of repose. 2) Angle of Surcharge is the angle a pile will assume on a moving conveyor. This ranges from 5" to 15" less than the angle of repose in most materials. For ROM coals, 25" is the average angle of surcharge. 3) Flowability, which determines the maxi- mum cross-sectional area needed to carry any given material on a belt. It is measured by the angles of repose and surcharge of a material and also serves as an index of the safe incline angle for the belt line. These characteristics, plus practical engineering research and development work are defined by an organization called the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) for most bulk materials. CEMA also provides a code for each classified material depending on the characteristics above and the subjective considerations of the average size to be encountered, the abrasiveness of the material, and any miscellaneous characteristics (oil resistive, corrosive, etc.) which may be important. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations-in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Deparment of the Interior. It presents analytical data for 4,397 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1952 and January and February 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.

"It is great significance to realize the efficiently and comprehensively utilization of iron, manganese and aluminum from refractory high-aluminum and high-manganese iron ores. Aimed at the two types of low grade refractory iron ores, mineralogical characteristics were studied. The direct reduction behaviors and evolution of mineral compositions of single iron ores and their blended ones were analyzed, and the corresponding reduction mechanisms were demonstrated. The results showed that only a part of iron oxides in high-aluminum ore are transformed to metallic iron after reduction, while the other react with aluminum and silica to form fayalite and hercynite which are difficult to be reduced. For the high manganese iron ore, most iron oxides can be reduced to metallic iron and manganese oxides can combined with aluminum-silica minerals to form galaxite and tephroite, promoting the reduction of iron oxides. Co-reduction results demonstrate that reduction of high- aluminum ore can be promoted by adding with high-manganese ore. Metallization and metallic iron grains increase dramatically by elevate high-manganese blending ratio. At the ratio of 60% high- manganese iron ore in the pellet feed, iron-slag separate well with a slag assaying 28.51%~36.35% Al2O3 and the recovery of iron and manganese can be reached 93%, respectively. The high-aluminum rich manganese residue was recycled with H2SO4. INTRODUCTION The growth of the Chinese iron and steel industry has been pushed forward by its rapid economic development in recent years, and 1126 million tons of iron ore have been consumed in 2014, where 933 million tons were imported according to the data from World Steel Association [1]. However, iron resources are limited, and especially the reserves of high-grade iron ores are declining, so it is of significant importance to optimize the mining rate of iron resources [2] and to utilize low- grade refractory iron resources, such as high-aluminum iron ore."

The challenge; to design production facilities and in particular separation equipment which have the ability to deal effectively with the ever changing composition of well fluids, over the life time of the field in which it is operating, ensuring maximum uptime of the asset coupled with consistently effective separation. Design engineers are, however, continually confronted with a dilemma when selecting materials of construction for Oil/Gas separation equipment, since they are generally obliged to select an acceptable material of construction, based on ?predicted? operating conditions, at the lowest acceptable cost. Consequently many designs are somewhat basic and do not take into account the constantly varying dynamics of the well fluids being released into the separator. As oil fields mature, oil companies endeavour to maximize revenue by maintaining oil and gas throughputs. This often results in an associated increase in water and sand volumes and, in order to maintain efficient separation, an increase in operational temperature and pressure; subjecting the equipment to operational conditions for which it was never designed. In reality, therefore, the limitations and constraints placed upon new construction design often result in Maintenance Engineers having to solve the ensuing problems in difficult ?in-field? environments. Should refurbishment or upgrade be required then the status of the platform and that of the vessel during shutdown will dictate how this is achieved. Hotwork on the vessel is generally not preferred due to the requirement for post weld heat treatment and re-classification of the pressure vessel, not to mention the added risk in terms of safety. Unfortunately, until recently, there have been few alternatives to conventional ?hotwork? repair and protection systems, especially since the performance of cold curing polymer based repair and coating systems, for use in oil and gas process equipment, has, until recently, been limited by their resistance to temperature and pressure in immersed conditions. In line with the continued development of high temperature / high pressure oil and gas fields however, recent breakthroughs in polymer technology can now offer both repair and protection solutions which are able to function effectively at temperatures up to 180°C in immersed conditions combined with resistance to the destructive forces of explosive decompression from pressures in excess of 90 bar. This paper will look at recent work that has been undertaken to determine the suitability of modern polymer based repair and protection systems as an alternative to hotwork; thus enabling newly designed and upgraded internals to be cold bonded into position and further protected with temperature resistant coatings, in order to minimize the downtime of the asset and further to protect the vessel internals from the Erosive Corrosive environment.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. Coalbed discontinuities historically have been hazardous to mining as well as obstructions to efficient production. An effective means of mapping these features is needed in order to plan safe and efficient mine development. This Bureau of Mines report discusses the use of surface seismic techniques for this purpose. At a southwestern Pennsylvania mine, a system of coalbed discontinu-ities (paleochannels) was accurately mapped by the Bureau of Mines using borehole log methods and underground observation. This site was chosen to test the value of a high-resolution surface seismic reflection on technique for coalbed mapping. A statistical study performed at this mine indicated that the probability of accurately delineating this paleochannel system with conventional borehole methods was remote. A total of 1.47 miles of high-resolution seismic survey, comprised of four seismic profiles, was conducted in known and suspected coalbed discontinuity areas. Several test holes were drilled on the seismic lines in order to evaluate the interpretations. It was found, based on these and other existing boreholes, that it is possible to predict these dis-continuities. Paleochannel washouts were correctly predicted in several instances but in other instances were either incorrectly predicted or not predicted in areas of known discontinuities.

Jaguar Mining Inc. is implementing a 1.1 Mtpy, 7-year LOM gold project in the Iron Quadrangle (?Quadrilátero Ferrífero?), Brazil. Construction is on schedule and startup is programmed for Q2 2010. Mill feed grade averages 4.43 g/t and LOM gold production is estimated at 800,000 oz. The project entails two sulfide underground mines and three oxide/transition open pit mines. A state-of-the-art flotation/gravity concentration/CIP Plant has been designed based on testwork carried out by internationally recognized Canadian, U.S., and Brazilian laboratories. The mass recovery of the flotation section is only ca 10%, while its gold recovery is about 90%. Therefore, the CIP-ADR Plant will treat only 10% of the solids mass contained in the mill feed, while 90% will be fully cyanide-free material that will be partially used to feed a Backfill Plant. The leached tailings will be conveyed to a rather small tailings dam, whose 20- m3/h supernatant solution will be treated by a new electrolytic technology. The plant design contemplates a High Density Thickener for the cyanide-free rejects exceeding the backfill demand and a Regrinding Section before the Leaching Circuit. The estimated overall metallurgical recovery sits around 92%. This paper focus on the use of modern technologies to reduce costs, risks, and liabilities.

The rapid advances on the mechanical side of blast-furnace practice have not always been accompanied by a proper appreciation of the metallurgical requirements. This is illustrated occasionally by the improper use of automatic barrow chargingdevices and bins (introduced at the expense of accuracy in weight), with ores of irregular composition or ores that have been poorly graded. The 100-ft. blast-furnace has not always been advantageous, and in many instances the increase in the number of tuyeres, from 8 or 12 to 20, has resulted in decreased output. The data pertaining to this division of blast-furnace practice are now sufficiently complete to allow inferences to be made. The use of fine ores has indicated the manner in which large outputs could be obtained, as it has emphasized the fact that intimacy of contact. between gases and ore, and coke and air, were more important than the time of exposnre. It was reasonable to suppose that if more points of contact were made between the air and the coke, their union would occur in a shorter period of time, and the coke would be burned more rapidly in the same-sized hearth, and an increased output thereby obtained. In consequence of this theory, many furnace men upon relining a furnace increased the number of tuyeres from 8 or 12 to 20, or even more, frequently with unfortunate results. This circular presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that responded to the Bureau of Mines annual economic survey and reported production for 1959. The companies named herein represent virtually all producers of processed fuels of mineral origin. A few small companies may not have been canvassed or failed to respond, however, as some plants operate intermittently, and the survey is voluntary. No consideration was given to size of the plant and all plants that reported commercial production were included. Specifically excluded were plants that manufactured briquets from wood charcoal. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured solid fuels, fabricated from fine-sized mineral fuels by mixing with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped pieces, 2 to 4 inches long, weighing 2 to 4 ounces. Packaged fuel consists of 3- to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. The overall size of a popular package is 10-112 x 7 x 3-1/2 inches. Briquets are durable, may be stored outdoors, and shipped and used as bulk fuel. Packaged fuel is fragile, and must be stored indoors to keep it from deteriorating. Whereas briquets are consumed in many areas as a general residential fuel, packaged fuel is more of a specialty item, used at times as a supplement to other fuels. Package fuel is burned without removing the paper and referred to as the "white-glove" fuel.

In this work, a natural foam extracted from the Amazon buriti palm tree is investigated as possible substitute for synthetic foams. The basic physical and mechanical properties of this biofoam were evaluated. Its sponge-like structure was characterized by the amount of pores and morphological aspects. It was found that the buriti biofoam displays a very low density of the order of 0.1 g/cm3 with a relatively good compressive strength. This would be suitable for several engineering applications and as a new material with the potential for replacing currently applied synthetic polymeric foams.

Ground support performance is critical to the safe and economical extraction of ore. This is particularly important for mass mining extractions at great depth, which are currently being considered by a large number of mining companies worldwide. As the in situ stresses concentrate around critical excavations, failure occurs at the excavation boundaries and ground support is required for the excavations to remain safe and accessible for their intended lifespan. Ground support consists of reinforcing elements that are installed within the rock mass to modify its internal behaviour (generally to within one excavation radius) and surface support elements that are installed at the exposed boundaries to retain the failed pieces of rock. For surface support to be effective, the loadings need to be transferred to the reinforcing elements; however, the combined performance of rock bolts and mesh is poorly understood in terms of the energy dissipation capacity available for a typical ground support scheme implemented at most mass mining operations.Over the last 15 years or so, a large number of large-scale laboratory experiments have been completed at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Dynamic Test Facility for reinforcement systems and surface support systems loaded separately. The objective of more recent testing has been to establish the combined energy dissipation capacity of typical and enhanced reinforcement systems combined with mesh surface support. Total energy dissipation has been separated into energy dissipation attributable to the reinforcement and to the mesh. If world oil prices stabilize at $ll/bbl, if the US decides on the "accelerated supply" case for domestic fuel resources, if investment capital is available, if environmentalists' demand become reasonable, if land withdrawals are halted, if government grants generous depletion allowances and fast depreciation write-offs, and if many other "iffy" conditions are met-then shale oil production may reach the 1-million-bpd level by 1985, according to the Project Independence Report. In the "base case" scenario, oil shale production would be, at best, about 250,000 bpd at $11 prices, and "much lower if expectations for $7 oil prices prevail." In this regard, the FEA study reflects the conclusion reached by companies engaged in oil shale development work. Thus, except for some new technological breakthrough in mining, the birth and growth of the US oil shale industry will occur only if oil prices stabilize at about $ll/bbl.

He welcomed the step taken last year by Dr. Gruner in presenting a new hypothesis, and asked Lake Superior geologists to meet the challenge of such multiple hypotheses by unbiased, study.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to identlfy and evaluate alternative binder materials for use in stabilizing and consolidating highly fractured roof along longwall faces and gate roads. The desirable characteristics of a stabilization material were defined, and an extensive search was conducted to find materials satisfying these characteristics. Of 20 materials originally scrutinized, 9 were chosen for laboratory analyses. The laboratory tests evaluated bond strength and tensile strength under both dry and wet conditions. An optimum material was not found. The laboratory analyses indicated two possible candidate materials for longwall stabilization: high-aluminous cement and two-component epoxy; however, the tensile strength of the high-aluminous cement was mediocre, and the epoxy cement is toxic, flammable, and fairly expensive. The potential market demand for an effective and economical stabilization macerial is discussed in the appendix.

In 1992, a paper was compiled highlighting a common-sense approach to electric smelting at Impala Platinum. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes. Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the US, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available.1 The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts. Definitions of some terms used in this presentation are necessary before proceeding.

[Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCR's) have been widely utilised as fire-resistant dielectric coolants; in electrical equipment used in mining applicants, including transformers, capacitors, electric motors, and electromagnets. In addition, PCB's have been used in hydraulic fluids and heat-transfer fluids and are present in many oil-filled transformers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently banned the manufacture of PCB's and equipment using PCB's, and imposed strict requirements on the continued use and disposal of existing PCB equipment. This manual discusses the EPA requirements, suggests ways to decrease the risks resulting from continued use of PCR equipment, and surveys the non-PCB equipment that is available as replacements for the PCB electrical equipment presently used in mines.]

This paper presents a comprehensive review of steel sheet piling including internationally manufactured hot rolled sections, their history, applications, installation and driving techniques. The discussion will cover both temporary and permanent installations; temporary piling used in construction of cofferdams with various bracing systems, deep foundation installations for buildings, bridges and tunnels, etc., and permanent piling used for highway, railroad and bridge construction as well as for riverbanks, piers, wharfs and docks, normally required for port facilities. In addition, cofferdams, as self-supporting gravity structures where interlock strength is of prime importance, will be discussed. The design and application of light, intermediate and heavy sections will be presented including heavy combined walls and information on Z-shaped, U-shaped and HZ sections and their corresponding interlocks. Emphasis is placed on new developments for design applications for deep foundations and waterfront structures within the "state of the art".
