The fatigue-failure characteristics under high-frequency (10 KHz) cyclic loading were determined for a marble, granite, and quartzite. The rock speci-mens were cyclicly loaded (using a high-power piezoelectric sonic transducer) at a constant strain amplitude generated by forming a longitudinal standing stress (strain) wave in the cylindrical test specimen. The number of load cycles required to fail each rock type at a given strain amplitude was deter-mined. The fatigue fractures were tensile in nature and the fracture load amplitudes were as low as 30 pct of the static tensile strength. Also the internal heating of the rock caused by the material damping (internal friction) was measured. The damping and internal heat generation in the specimens was analyzed to show that nearly all of the power input can be accounted for as a change in enthalpy in the specimen. Using these results the thermal strain in the rock was calculated to evaluate its contribution to fatigue failure. The thermal strain was found to range up to 30 pct of the dynamic strain amplitude depending on the load amplitude and the number of load cycles. The specific energy required for failure was determined and possible applications of the high-frequency fatigue fragmentation process are discussed.

The Tyrone copper solution extraction and electrowinning plant was the first such facility built by Phelps Dodge Mining Company in 1984. Over the next 20 years, the aqueous flow rate capacity of the plant has been expanded from the original design of 12,000 gallons per minute (gpm) to 34,000 gpm to meet production goals in the face of declining copper grades in the leach solutions. The ability to process higher aqueous flow rates through existing equipment comes at the expense of increased organic loss through entrainment to raffinate. These losses of organic (diluent and extraction reagents) can account for up to 10 percent of the plant?s total operating costs. With the recent dramatic price increase of petroleum-based products, these operating costs due to losses are sure to increase. This paper will discuss recent improvements at the Tyrone SXEW plant that have resulted in a 40 percent reduction of organic losses. These improvements include picket fence modifications, new fence materials, organic recovery systems, and operational practices within the solution extraction process.

Cyanide is a significant contributor to the cost of producing gold. Any reduction in cyanide consumption that is achieved through more reliable measurement, and/or more efficient management of cyanide dosing rates, can produce a significant financial saving to the mine operation.

Development during 1942 led to the discovery of 26 new fields in the Texas Gulf Coast, as compared with 27 during 1941. Of these, 19 are classed as oil fields, 4 distillate fields, and 3 gas fields. Production from the new fields amounted to 614,467 bbl. to October 1942. Producing Sections.—Discoveries in I942, compared with the previous two years, classified by producing formations, are shown in the following table: It is interesting to note the increase in Wilcox discoveries due to the extensive geophysical campaign that has been con. ducted since 1940. Drilling.—During the year 688 wells were drilled, of which 574 produced oil or gas and 114 were dry. This represents a considerable decline in activity over the previous year, when 1405 wells were drilled in the area, of which 1081 were producers and 324 failures. Jackson County continued to hold the lead, with 222 wells completed. Production.—-Despite curtailed drilling, production amounted to 118,009,451 bbl. for 1942, indicating a slight increase over the 113,726,893 bbl. produced during 1941. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include condensate and distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties most of the activities referred to. The number of wells drilled includes only field wells; not wildcats. Outstanding Fields of 1942 The Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 270 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the new discoveries of 1942. Of these the most outstanding from the standpoint of production are listed in Table 4. Each of these fields produced one million barrels or more during 1942. Some of the fields where new extensions are occasionally referred to as separate fields, such as West Columbia and New West Columbia, or Thompson and South Thompson, are combined to give a more accurate outline. Two interesting facts may be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields: (I) that the Lolita field, Jackson County, is the only discovery since 1938 to produce more than one million barrels annually, although there have been 79 discoveries since Jan. I, 1940; (2) that 20 of these 26 fields produce from the Frio. New Fields ALief, Harris County.—Pure Oil Company's No. I Mike Albanese was drilled to 8637 ft. in Cook Mountain shale. In Pt- and Au-keeping complex ores processing, about 10% ~ 15% of noble metals are lost with true tailings that are due to low floatability of Pt- and Au-keeping minerals by the conventional collectors. With the aim to achieve the effective recovery of noble metals at flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni and Au-keeping ores organic complex reagents keeping electron-donating atoms of nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur or phosphorus may be offered as selective collectors for the indicated minerals. These rea-gents tend to form complex compounds with PGM. Besides this, Cu-Ni-Pt and complex Pt and Au carbonated mica ores are characterized by finely disseminated (up to nanometer size) mineral forms of Pt in multivalent states. In this connection, the use of a combination of the strong ionic collectors with nonionic reactants that are capable to derivate complex compounds with multivalent PGM seems to be expedient for this type of ores. In the research new complex reactants were tested such as cyclic alkylene-trithiocarbonates, oxyalkyl butylxanthogen acid ethers, a combination of the collectors ? mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and dialkyldithiophosphates (DTP). Sorption and flotation tests were made with monomine-ralic samples of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and Pt-Cu-Ni sulfide ore samples. Sorption properties were examined by the extractive UV spectrophotometric method and potentiometric measurements. To indicate a structure of modified xanthate solutions the method of a thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was applied. The chromatographic behavior of the basic components of modified xanthate solution ? ButX, cyclic propylene-trithiocarbonate (PTTC), diethyl-dithiocarbamate (DEDC) and the product of its modification ? oxypropyl-S-ether of dithiocarbamatic acid was studied on plates ?Silufol UV ? 254?. The composition of organic solvents and its ratio in a mobile phase was deter-mined for simultaneous chromatography of the main components of a reaction mixture. It was found that operating selectivity of MBT, DTP and cyclic alkylene-trithiocarbonates incorporated in modified xanthate in relation to Pt-Cu-Ni and Au-containing sulfide minerals might be explained by an electoral sorption of this nonionic collector on a surface of the minerals studied. It was demonstrated that the application new reagent modes with the use of a combination of designed complex reactants helped to increase the extraction index of Pt- and Au-keeping minerals from complicated ores.

Juntas soldadas por centelhamento (flash butt welding) de trilhos de aço do tipo intermediário foram caracterizadas mecânica e estruturalmente. Além disso, ensaios preliminares de dilatometria foram aplicados ao metal base e correlacionados ao processo de soldagem. Os resultados indicam que o metal base atendeu aos requisitos da Norma AREMA (2013). A microestrutura de toda a região soldada é formada por perlita e os ciclos termomecânicos provocaram significativas alterações no tamanho das colônias perlíticas e na sua morfologia, com destaque às mudanças de espaçamento interlamelar em toda a junta e início de esferoidização na região de transformação parcial. Como consequência das alterações morfológicas da perlita, a microdureza foi significativamente reduzida na região de transformação parcial e refino de grãos. A taxa de resfriamento média após o processo de soldagem foi estimada a partir dos ensaios de dilatometria.

Current research into coal based synthetic fuels is taking place on two fronts, fuels for power generation and conversion of coal to ultra-clean fuels for transportation. Present research into solid synthetic fuels is concentrated on development of clean coal technology which will meet or exceed the proposed cap and trade emissions set forth in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Research into ultra-clean liquid fuels is concentrated on either direct or indirect liquefaction process which could be used to manufacture both diesel fuels and gasoline.

The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. IT is generally agreed that cold-working mechanically refines the grains into smaller fragments and with continued working these are oriented with certain crystallographic directions bearing a relation to the direction in which the metal is worked. Some of the energy expended on the metal during plastic deformation appears in the form of heat, but a very small portion remains in the metal as stored energy. The entropy, specific heat capacity, temperature at which recrystallization will just begin, density, ductility, elasticity, tensile strength, and resistance to corrosion are affected. These properties have been studied extensively and some of the changes in the physical properties due to cold-working were attributed to lattice distortion.1-8 The broadening of the K. lines on the X-ray diffraction diagrams of plastically deformed metals is believed to indicate lattice distortion, and consequently the existence of internal stresses. The evidence supporting this theory rests solely upon the observed experimental fact that the dif-fraction lines are broadened and the K a doublets are completely diffused. Elam9 has reviewed the matter of lattice distortion in relationship to the hardening of metals by plastic deformation. The X-ray diagrams of plastically deformed metals differ in general from annealed metals. The hardening of a metal was believed due to lattice distortion.9 The resolu-tion of the doublet is lost when a metal is cold-worked and the Lane spots are elongated. At one time this elongation was thought to indicate the elastic bending of the crystal planes. However, more careful work showed that the asterism was due to new orientations developed within the fragmented grains during plastic deformation. Some theories attrib-uted the hardening to fragmentation of the grains into smaller units.

"The high injury rand fatality rate in coal mining, as compared with other industries, has caused the mining industry to become more and more interested in accident prevention methods.The prevention of accidents in the mining industry is probably not as simple a problem as it is in other industries, but if the experience of coal mining companies who have taken up the work of accident prevention seriously during recent years means anything, there is little doubt that most mining companies car improve their accident records very materially.Such results can be obtained in practically all instances without adding to production costs. In fact, there is little doubt that a well-organized program of accident prevention Will bring about a 'material production cost reduction due to increased efficiency, lower labor turnover, fewer delays due to accidents, better satisfied workmen, and a direct saving in compensation costs as well as many other items of expense.The more closely a. person is connected with the work of accident prevention, the more he becomes a believer in the value of amity in human relationships and the more he is able to exercise a spirit of toleration, fairness, justness, and helpfulness toward the problems of others, whatever those problems may be. Human nature responds to just these expressions of good willAnother great and invaluable effect of working for safety, is the fact that it is building up in the mind an appreciation of that which is constructive and, conversely, in opposition to that which is destructive In other words; the person who is sincerely striving to prevent accidents because they are destructive, costly, tad injurious, is subconsciously training his mind to look on any proposition from a constructive point of view. Working for accident prevention and safety is about the finest social training any person can have. It does not make a Person a financial Wizard or an executive genius, but it does make for the highest type of citizenship.While humanitarian reasons alone should be sufficient to maze accident prevention work an important factor in every mining organization, there are other reasons as well, since it has been proved conclusively that there can be no efficiency and economy without safety, as somebody pays when safety is lacking. Every safety device pays dividends; every safety application evaded is an assessment and a loss. Dangerous conditions are the most expensive and extravagant conditions in or about a coal mine. The economic gains are of considerable interest to all coal mining companies and this is brought about as before stated--through decreased compensation rates, the reduction of labor turnover, etc."

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

Discussion of the paper of Edward Keller, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2093 to 2115. GEORGE L. HEATH, Hubbell, Mich.:-In the admirable paper quoted, is mentioned the date when the 5-g. assay was first proposed is a standard for refined metal. The author omitted, however, to mention a later paper,1 which contains a proposal for the use of a single " stock solution " of mixed acids, which has been adopted by the American Brass Co. and others. The suggestion is made that such a scheme would save time and manipulation with converter metal. Unless the low current of 0.5 ampere and the large excess of nitric acid, recommended by Mr. Keller, have been proved necessary to hold up antimony-and selenium, the use of the mixed solution which we have adopted will permit the use of 1 ampere of current per square decimeter of cathode surface, until the solutions have become colorless. At this point, we wash the covers and reduce to 0.5 ampere to prevent oxidation or contamination. The ordinary split electrodes have been used. With strong current, at least, the use of an excess of nitric acid tends to the neutralization of the solution before the end of the period, from the formation of too much ammonia., and this is detrimental. Antimony deposits more easily than arsenic, and tends to drag the latter dorm with it. There must, be some such explanation for the fact. that we have made hundreds of deposits of pure cathodes from Lake material containing no antimony, but as. high as 0.5 per cent. of arsenic. By placing an assay beaker in the Frary solenoid, or rotary device, a cathode deposit with less than 0.01 per cent. of impurity is easily obtained in one operation from 3 g. of whitneyite, carrying from 7 to 10 per cent. of arsenic. In such a case, it is necessary to test several times for end point and remove the plate as soon as no brown tint appears (at once) when hydrogen sulphide water is added to the test portion on the spot plate. Edward Keller's proportion,, of solvent figure out as 14 cc. of strong nitric to 11.4 cc. of sulphuric acid (1.84).

"The removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from coking wastewater was experimentally investigated using a three-dimensional electrode reactor. The experimental results showed that the refractory organics in coking wastewater can be effectively removed by this process, and COD removal efficiency was affected by the operating parameters, such as electrolytic retention time, particle electrode dosage, initial pH, current density, aeration amount and electrical conductivity. The experimental results show that the three-dimensional electrode could have a COD removal efficiency of more than 60% and a running cost of no more than 6 YUAN (RMB)/t. This indicates the great potential of a three-dimensional electrode reactor in engineering applications as an advanced treatment methods for coking wastewater.IntroductionCoking wastewater is generated from coal coking, coal gas purification, and by-product recovery processes of coking; it is composed of phenolic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ammonia, cyanide, polycyclic nitrogen-containing aromatics, acyclic compounds, etc. Most of these constituents are refractory, poorly biodegradabile, toxic and carcinogenic [1-3]. Currently, coking wastewater is usually treated by different forms of A/O biological nitrogen removal processes as the primary treatment means, but the aforementioned processes are not efficient enough to meet the requirements of the National Discharge Standard in China (GB13456-1992). According to the continuous requirement on improving environmental protection for the coking industry (revised 2008), increasing wastewater utilization ratios and reducing the discharge of effluent in the coke industry have to be implemented for cleaner production and sustainable development. Therefore, advanced technologies need to be developed to treat coking wastewater and reutilize the product as industrial cooling water, which would be one of the best choices to achieve zero discharge of wastewater and reduce water consumption per ton of steel produced. In this study, a three-dimensional fluidized bed electrode reactor was adopted for the advanced treatment of coking wastewater, and the effects of operating conditions, including particle dosage, initial pH, current density, supporting electrolyte, as well as aeration amount on the COD removal rate, were investigated. Its running costs were also estimated."

Cu-base alloys (Cu-Zn-Al, Cu-Al-Be, Cu-Al-Ni), depending on their composition, have martensitic transformations that can be thermally or mechanically induced between a metastable structure called austenite and one or more metastable structures called martensites. In single crystals, depending on the specific composition of the alloy and the crystallographic orientation of the tensile axis, martensite-martensite transformations can be mechanically induced. The hysteresis associated to these martensite-martensite transitions is usually much greater than the one associated to the austenite-martensite transformation. Thus, martensite-martensite transitions are potential candidates for energy dissipation in a mechanical damper. Possible applications that would benefit from high hysteresis include seismic damping devices, dampers for satellites and the aerospace industry, defense and others. We present pseudoelastic cycling results of alloys submitted to different thermal treatments. Our conclusions highlight the fact that, under certain conditions, Cu-base alloys deliver better damping performance than commercially available SMAs and even the new Fe-base SMAs.

This paper presents a case history of an engineered, monitored, and tested program that provided an effective and satisfactory basis for the completion of pile foundations for Twin Dolphins 1 at La Peninsula Condominiums located in the Isles of Capri in southwest Florida, U.S.A. An 8-story building (withl-story parking underneath) along with recreational facilities (such as a swimming pool and tennis courts) had been planned for final construction. Following an evaluation of various foundation alternatives, a precast prestressed concrete (PPC) pile-supported system was selected. The building foundations were designed for pile capacities of 445kN (50 tons) and 890kN (100 tons) in compression and 133kN (15 tons) in uplift. A test pile program was performed to provide site-specific pile driving data, verify design assumptions, determine production pile lengths, and evaluate pile driving criteria. A total of 24, 356 mm (14-in.) square, 19.8 m (65 ft) PPC concrete piles were driven and dynamically load tested utilizing a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) within the building limits. Dynamic monitoring during probe pile installation and restriking was performed to estimate the ultimate capacity of the piles and to evaluate driving stresses during installation. CAPWAP analyses were preformed on PDA data to better estimate pile capacity, resistance distribution, and predict pile freeze (increase in pile resistance with time) and thus optimized the production pile lengths. Upon completion of probe pile installation, 12 of the probe piles were tested using the Pile Echo Tester (PET) function of the Pile Integrity Sonic Analyzer (PISA). PET testing was performed to evaluate the integrity of piles which had exhibited high driving stresses during PDA testing. Information gathered during the probe pile driving program was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 539 PPC piles (including 24 probe piles) within the building limits at the project site to depths ranging from 9.1 to 19.8 m (30 to 65 ft) below the existing ground elevation as part of the foundation support system. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared very well with the capacities from the CAPWAP analysis for probe piles. Use of geotechnical instrumentation and PDA assisted technology enabled each foundation support element to be constructed to its optimum capacity and at optimum cost. Furthermore, by using PDA the consultant was able to quantify a difficult to measure geotechnical phenomenon termed "pile freeze" which eliminated costly overdriving and unnecessary splicing of piles.

AGAIN in 1963, as in nearly every year since 1946, the Canadian mineral industry has established a new national record in value of mineral production. The 1963 estimated total value of $2,976 million is 5 percent higher than the 1962 value of $2,845 million.2 As in previous years, metals made up more than half the value of total production. For selected years since 1949 the category percentages and total value are as follows: [ ] Crude petroleum, Canada's most valuable mineral product, accounted for 21 percent of the total value of minerals in 1963. In descending order came nickel 12 percent, iron ore 10 percent, copper 10 percent, gold 5 percent, and uranium 5 percent. Asbestos accounted for 5 percent, sand and gravel 4 percent, and cement 4 percent. The complete list of Canada's mineral products includes more than 50 basic commodities.

The effect of longwall mining on streams and shallow aquifers has been the subject of numerous research studies for more than twenty years. As a result of these studies, it has become common to consider an overburden thickness of 400 feet as the lower limit at which longwall mining methods may be used with little or no effect on hydrologic systems. This paper presents the results of a study documenting the response of a large high order stream to shallow cover undermining by longwall methods in the northern Appalachian coalfield. The field site is located in a narrow stream valley where the overburden, composed primarily of limestone and sandstone units interbedded with shales and siltstones, ranges in thickness from 340 to 285 feet above the main bench of the Pittsburgh coal seam. Streamflow monitoring and monitor well measurements indicate that no significant loss zones or water table lowering resulted from undermining the stream or the adjacent valley bottom area. Additionally, hydrographs for shallow near-stream wells exhibit fluctuations related to natural seasonal variations, which are nearly identical to those observed in a non-undermined control well in the same watershed. Environmental factors affecting streamflow were monitored through the use of a control stream in an adjacent non-undermined watershed to differentiate between natural and mining induced changes in flow.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of a study of mine inspection records covering 2,200 mining installations over a 3-year period ending December 1974. Tables show the relative frequency of violations of certain provisions of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 in particular areas of concern, such as circuit breakers, grounding, and permissibility. Examples of past use of the data and analyses are presented.
