It frequently occurs in the establishment of reduction works, in an entirely new and untried mining district, that the metallurgist in charge finds considerable difficulty in determining the process best adapted to the ores which he receives for treatment. At the first glance it would seem easy enough to decide what style of furnace is best adapted for beneficiating any one class of minerals. If the ore possessed a quartzose gangue and was comparatively free from base metals, while salt could be obtained at a reasonable price, one would naturally resort to a chloridizing roasting, and pan or barrel amalgamation for the extraction of its silver contents. If galena or carbonate of lead was the prevailing mineral, and charcoal could be obtained at moderate figures, the blast-furnace would beneficiate the ores most advantageously. But if, as is usually the case in Colorado, the ores consisted of an intimate mixture of galena, zinc-blende, copper-pyrites, and noble silver minerals, associated with an overwhelming mass of siliceous heavy spar, or limestone gangue, the common reverberatory furnace can be used to the greatest advantage ; and, although the product is only a copper matte, I do not hesitate to affirm that it can be treated, and the silver, gold, and copper produced at nearly the same price for which silver and lead can be separated. In Germany, blast-furnaces are frequently used for this same purpose, both for argentiferous and non-argeutiferous copper ores; but any one who will take the trouble to examine the statistics of smelting at Fahlun, the Oberharz, and other Continental works of this description, will see that the expenses are far too great, and the production much too small to think of employing this method in our mining districts, where only the softest and most miserable kind of charcoal is obtainable. I propose in this paper to give an accurate account of the expenses incurred at the Mount Lincoln Smelting Works in treating the same kind of ore, and producing the same end-product in both blast and reverberatory furnaces. I have taken for comparison a favorable campaign of the blast-furnace, and a good average month's running of the reverberatory. The Atlanta mine is located in east-central Nevada, approximately 360 km (225 miles) from Las Vegas. It lies in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Pioche. The property is currently operated by the Standard Slag Co. under a joint venture agreement with Bobcat Properties Inc, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Operations began in May 1975, and the mill is currently processing 109 000 to 122 500 t/y (120,000 to 135,000 stpy) of gold- and silver-bearing ore. Open-pit mining takes place in a breccia zone that occurs between Ordovician limestones and dolomites on the footwall and Tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia ore is among the most abrasive in the world-shovel teeth must be replaced every week, 19-mm-thick (3/4-in.) steel chutes last about a month.

U.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal dust compliance data sometimes shows high silica levels at roof bolters. However, it is unclear whether this silica normally originates from the bolter itself or from other dust sources upwind of the bolter research studies to answer this question at individual mines have been conducted. However, operational practices vary from mine to mine thus, the information gleaned from any one study cannot be accurately extrapolated to describe silica dust sources in most mines. In this paper, three decades of bolter dust research are reviewed the results showed that, while inadequate maintenance on the bolter dust collection system can result in excessive dust, more likely reasons for high silica levels are inadequate ventilation of the mine entries being bolted and dust traveling downwind from the continuous miner to the bolter. "In the interest of accident prevention it is felt that a report of the measures taken during the past four years toward the reduction of fatal accidents in Alabama, especially in preventing falls of roof and coal, will be of interest throughout the mining districts.In order to determine the primary factors in the reduction of fatal accidents from falls of roof and coal, the operators, State Inspection Department, and the Alabama council of the Holmes Safety Association were asked: ""What has your organization done to help in the reduction of accidents from fails of roof and coal?"" The responses to this question have made this report possible.To bring out briefly the reduction in fatal accidents from falls of roof and coal as well as from all causes, the following three tables have been prepared.These statistics have been compiled from the records of the State Inspection Department.In the order mentioned, it is felt that credit for the reduction in fatal accidents from falls of roof and coal should be given to the individual operating companies, the State Inspection Department, the Alabama council and chapters of the Holmes Safety Association, and the Alabama Mining Institute. The individual operating companies naturally head the list in that they are directly concerned from a humanitarian as well as a financial point of view. The State Inspection Department through frequent and thorough inspections and by providing necessary statistics is largely responsible for the reduction. The Alabama council and its affiliated chapters of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association through its publicity and education reaches a large number of employees throughout the mining district. The Alabama Mining Institute defrays the council expenses and thus makes possible much of this service to the Alabama mining industry.In 1925 there were 49 fatalities, equivalent to 115,169 man days per fatality, from falls of roof and coal, which was by no means a good record; in 1926 the number and frequency of accidents were reduced to 42 fatalities and 149,096 man days per fatality. When in 1927 the fatalities from this cause mounted to 61 and the man days per fatality were reduced to 89,903, it was quickly realized that more concentrated efforts must be exerted to reduce such accidents.As early as August, 1927, at which time the fatalities from falls had reached a total of 31, the following letter from the Chief Mine Inspector was written to each operating company in the State and was the initiation of a very strenuous campaign by all parties concerned towards the reduction of accidents from falls of roof and coal."

A basic ingredient for rapid tunnel excavation is material handling. In construction of tunnel projects in urban areas material handling requires additional input to maximize performance. Urban projects share the same problems experienced in all tunnel construction and they must be dealt with. Howeve.., Urban constraints add a larger dimension. APPLICATION ENGINEERING A MUST A word of caution. To achieve increasing speed of excavation in tunnels whether in Urban areas or elsewhere will require much creative thought and energy. It would be a false premise to assume that major breakthroughs will result from this conference, or shortly thereafter, or to hope that a success here or there can translate into a universal solution. The reality, as we see it is that rapid progress and great economies will accrue on any given project only if effective application engineering is carried through. By all means take advantage of past experiences but, do not at the peril of costly undertaking, blindly accept the program of a successful job elsewhere as automatically suited to your project. Tunnel construction in urban areas is at best a difficult undertaking made more difficult in this period of greater awareness of environment, of conservation and of the quality of living by sophisticated urban communities,. A construction job represents a necessary nuisance to urban communities. To minimize this nuisance many regulatory laws are adopted. These regulations can and do slow down tunnel jobs and pyramid costs.

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.INTRODUCTION – THE GEARLESS PRINCIPLE The principle idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)"

The electrowinning of beryllium from beryllium oxide (BeO) using a molten-salt electrolyte composed of 56 LiF-37 BeF2-7 BeO (mole-percent) was investigated. Anodes made of porous carbon were found to be superior in current-carrying capacity and gave a lower cell voltage than other types of anode material tested. When porous carbon anodes were used) the resultant increase in anode area prevented anode passivation. The cell voltage was 3.3 volts) and electrode current efficiencies of 50 to 70 percent were obtained. The electrodeposited beryllium was recovered as beryllium powder or was coalesced to metal beads by heating to 1,300° C.

Best practice in the design and construction of soil cover systems for mine waste management has advanced extensively over the past two decades. While significant progress has been achieved, we still have little experience with respect to proven performance for cover systems that must last hundreds of years. Some cover designs appear to be functioning well, while at the same time the performance of many more are now being called into question. This presentation evaluates the integrity of cover systems from both a global and local perspective in relation to the uranium industry within Canada.

"During the last decades investigators of many countries shows an increased interest to alloys which are characterized by miscibility gap in a liquid state. It is connected with essential possibilities of control of structurization in such alloys because of the melt at certain temperature parameters is · emulsion with disperse phase inclusions. These ensure essential influence ·on structurizations.The certain inclusions can play a role of lubrication ensuring ""wearless"" process. The sizes of inclusions of this phase can be rather large proportional to sizes of strengthening phase (up to 1000 nm). Other inclusions ensure process of strengthening of a main material. In this case requests to a dispersibility character of distribution and structure of such inclusions are much higher.The multicomponent alloys of system of copper - (Fe - Cr - C)- alloy concern to the number of advanced compositions. The copper alloys with structure of a type of a ""frozen emulsion"" in which strengthening phase· is a chromium pig-iron are characterized by high thermal stability in the extreme operating conditions. The mechanism of inclusions forming is emulsifying of a melt in miscibility gap at temperatures close to temperature of binodal under superimposition of external effects.The main complexity of producing of ware from such alloys is .a providing in their structure of necessary dispersible inclusions uniformly distributed all over the volume. Thanks to a selective action of electromagnetic fields on liquid phases with various electroconductivity relative velocity of phases is created and is regulated the ratio of their ""apparent"" specific gravity is changed. Excitation of pulsing force effects with the certain frequency on interphase surface allow actively to influence on process of a dispersion of a liquid metal medium."

To provide thermodynamic data for converting the nickel matte to liquid nickel, an experimental study was conducted in the phase equilibrium between the Ni-S alloy and the CaO-Al2O3 based slag melted in a MgO crucible at 1873 K under controlled Pso2 of 10.1 kPa and Po2 in a range between 2.5x 10-and 10.1 Pa by using CO-CO2-SO2 gas mixtures. The content of nickel in the slag at Po, of 10.1 Pa, above which solid NiO is expected to precipitate in the equilibrium state, was found to be 4, I mass% and the contents of sulfur and oxygen in the nickel melt were 0.4 and 02 mass%, respectively. ft was clarified that increase in the temperature reduces the solubility of nickel in the slag and the contents of sulfur and oxygen in the alloy, The distribution of minor elements such as gold, silver, copper, cobalt, iron, arsenic and antimony between the Ni-S alloy and the CaO-Al2O3 based slag was also studied. The distribution ratios of iron and cobalt, defined by (%X in slag)/[%X in alloy] where X is the minor element, are larger values than that of nickel, while those of copper, silver and antimony are similar to that of nickel. The distribution ratios of arsenic and gold are lower than that of nickel in the higher range of oxygen partial pressure.

"The early mining of iron ore in Minnesota was carried on with the most primitive kind of tools. The pioneers used only such equipment as could be packed from Duluth through one hundred miles of forest to the first mines on the Vermilion Range and the operations were carried on with picks, shovels, hand drills and wheelbarrows, the ore being hoisted in buckets with a horse winch and carted in horse drawn wagons to the stockpile. This was about the extent of the mechanical equipment of the Minnesota iron mines in the early eighties.As soon as a railroad was pushed through from Two Harbors to the Vermilion Range the equipment began to be improved upon; wood burning steam boilers were installed and small steam puffers displaced the horse-winches, wheelbarrows were aban¬doned and small cars were introduced. Hauling the hoisted ore in wagons was discontinued and trestles were built so that the ore could be stockpiled more cheaply through the use of cars and high piles. These same stockpiles were loaded by hand into the 10 and 15 ton capacity railroad ore cars.Within a few years a marked change took place—the hand drill gave place to the air drill, such as No. 3 Rands, Ingersolls, Sargents and some Sullivans. Tramming was done by mules, the ore hoisted in. self-dumping skips, hoisting engines were intro¬duced and it seemed as though mining as a business in Minnesota had come to stay. At this stage someone conceived the idea of making the stockpile floor about three feet above the top of the ore cars to facilitate the hand loading of stockpile ore for trans¬portation. This was done through the use of wheelbarrows at first and later by using I-ton cars running on tracks laid on the stockpile floor."

Dislocation substructures in superalloy matrices of varyzng co)npositions have been studied. In general, it has been found that the alloys can be classified into ''high", ''medium", and "low" stacking fault energy classes based on the type of dislocation substructure observed in the matrix and that the substructure can be correlated to the stacking fault energy. The effect of different types of dislocation substructure and dislocation reactions on the intragranulur precipitation of carbide phases has been studied. In a Ni-Cv-Mo-Fe matrix, precipitation of MC carbides in association with stacking faults has been observed. In most superalloys, solid-solution strengthening and precipitation hardening are the chief mechanisms employed to achieve strength. The latter contribution to strength is usually achieved by the precipitation of / in certain wrought alloys. Insufficient attention has been given to the problem of obtaining strength in su-peralloys by controlling precipitation of carbides on imperfections within the matrix. The present work was undertaken to investigate the dislocation substructure in various superalloy matrices, to study the effect of such substructure on subsequent precipitation of carbides in the matrix, and to investigate whether certain modes of precipitation of carbide phases found in austenitic stainless steels2"4'6 would occur in nickel-base alloy matrices with dislocation substructures of the same type as those found in austenitic steels. 1) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Five-pound heats of the various alloy compositions reported here were vacuum-cast. The ingots were given light deformation by rolling to break up the as-cast structure and then homogenized for 24 hr. HASTELLOY alloy X (nominal composition: Ni-2OCr-17Fe-8Mo-0.05C) was homogenized at 2150°F and In-cone1 625 (nominal composition: Ni-20Cr-5Fe-8Mo-3.5Cb-0.05C) was homogenized at 2280°F. Fabrication of 0.004-in. sheet was achieved by cold rolling with intermediate annealing treatments being carried out at the same temperature as those used for homogeniza-tion. Each solution anneal was followed by quenching. The aim of this procedure was to redissolve as much of the primary carbide phase as possible. Samples of the 0.004-in. sheet were cut and encapsulated in quartz capsules and then heat-treated in the tube furnaces. Thin foils were prepared using an ethanol-10 pct perchloric acid bath at 32°F and at a voltage of 22 v. A "window" technique was employed. Observations were made on a JEM-7 electron microscope operating at 100 kv. 2) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS a) Types of Dislocation Substructure. Fig. 1 shows a schematic correlation between stacking fault energy, SFE, and the type of dislocation substructure observed in various matrices of nickel- and cobalt-base alloys. A precise quantitative determination of stacking fault energy is not implied in the figure but the correlation between stacking fault energy and the type of dislocation substructure obtained allows alloys to be divided into three classes in analogy with the classification employed by Swann and ~uttin~' for binary alloys of copper. Class I alloys are associated with a "high" SFE and show a cellular substructure of dislocations as typified by the micrograph of a thin foil of pure nickel deformed 4 pct at room temperature in Fig. 2. With decreasing SFE the tendency toward cell formation is lessened and dislocations tend to be arranged in coplanar groupings. Examples of this class of alloys with "medium" SFE are provided by the mi-crostructure of solution-heat-treated, quenched, and deformed thin foils of HASTELLOY alloy X, "Waspaloy" (prior to any aging), and Inconel 625. Fig. 3 shows a thin-foil micrograph of an alloy of Inconel 625 composition, solution-heat-treated, quenched, and deformed 5 pct at room temperatures. No evidence of any cell structure can be obtained in materials of "medium" stacking fault energy, Fig. 3, even after severe deformation. The stacking fault energy of the alloy shown in Fig. 3 is, however, not low enough to make the dissociation of dislocations visually obvious. As stacking fault energy decreases further, with successive addition of solute in the matrix, there is an increased tendency toward dissociation of dislocations and cross slip becomes progressively more difficult. Eventually, when the stacking fault energy is "low" enough, complete dissociation of dislocations is seen to occur as shown in Figs.

A solvent extraction procedure was developed on a laboratory scale for recovering trisodium phosphate, zinc, and iron from waste phosphate sludge as separate products. The sludge was dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and iron was extracted as ferric chloride by isopropyl ether. Zinc was extracted by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid in kerosine. The efficiencies of the one-and two-stage extractions ranged from 98 to nearly 100 percent. Trisodium phosphate was recovered by crystallization from the raffinate. The value of two marketable products is considerably more than than the costs of the major reagent. The process was developed to permit recycling of values in this waste and to consequently reduce stream pollution from this source.

MOST papers on xanthate have dealt with principles rather than practice. On the assumption that many millmen are interested in knowing where and in what manner the xanthates are being used in mills other than their own, this paper will summarize the results of a recent survey of North American plants. A brief background story and a description of the xanthates will be followed with the results of that survey; then a few observations will be made on storage, feeding, and ore testing. The first xanthate was made in 1822 by Zeise of the University of Copenhagen. With commendable scientific detachment (or perhaps a bad cold) Zeise ignored a more pervading quality of the substance and named it for its color, after the Greek word "xanthos," meaning yellow. During the first 80 years of its recorded existence xanthate found use only in.small quantity as an insecticide; after the turn of the century there was some further demand for it in the vulcanization of rubber. It was not until 1922, by coincidence the centennial of Zeise's discovery, that C. H. Keller of San Francisco, seeking sulphidizing agents, recalled xanthate in connection with his experience years earlier when he had seen this material used in Europe to combat grape phylloxera. His successful tests with the new flotation reagent culminated in the basic xanthate patent (U. S. 1,554,216) in 1925. In the minds of many metallurgists the introduction of xanthate as a flotation reagent is identified with the beginnings of alkaline circuits, the first use of chemical collectors, and the beginning of selective flotation. Actually, these preceded xanthatc by a number of years. The alkaline circuit in lead-zinc flotation was introduced by Lyster as early as 1912. In 1922 Sheridann and Griswold made their momentous discovery (Timber Butte) that alkali cyanides and zinc sulphate effectively inhibited the flotation of pyrite and sphalerite in pulps made alkaline with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The use of lime to retard pyrite in copper flotation began within two years after Ralston directed attention to its possibilities in 1917. These were the beginnings of modern selective flotation, which was practiced successfully on copper-iron ores at Nacozari in 1922, and at Inspiration, Cananea, and others only shortly afterward. In the lead-zinc mills, selective flotation was of even greater economic importance at that time. The Sunnyside plant of U. S. Smelting, Refining, and Mining Co. used the process earlier than 1920, and Consolidated, Timber Butte, and others soon followed. As a chemical collector xanthate was relatively a latecomer, for the Corliss patent of 1917 covered the first of these, alpha-naphthylamine, and the Perkins patent of 1918 the second, thiocarbanilid. WMC was a late entrant into Indonesia in mid-1996, but had considerable experience and success in exploring in Asia, particularly the Philippines since 1988. Given the geological similarities to the Philippines and IndonesiaÆs superior æcradle to graveÆ Contract of Work (CoW) tenure system, the entry into Indonesia was a logical decision but nonetheless a result of detailed planning. At the time of WMCÆs entry, Busang in Kalimantan was still a 60 moz wonder and the euphoria of this apparent discovery had overflowed into every aspect of exploration. Many junior mining companies and tenement speculators were clamouring for properties in Kalimantan, whilst other serious and capable explorers had to compete for properties and exploration personnel in an era of high and often unrealistic expectations. The picture in late-1998 and through 1999 is dramatically different, as the worldwide downturn in the price of most metals coincides with financial and social crises throughout most Asian countries. The impact of this has been particularly severe in Indonesia and when coupled with the negative sentiment of the Busang fraud has resulted in an exodus of junior companies and also some of the majors. This is understandable given the much publicised social unrest, uncertainty of government, mooted changes to the eighth generation CoW, increasing illegal mining and heightened community expectations. The reality however is somewhat different and although clearly a crisis in many respects, it is also a time of great opportunity.

The Henderson Mine started production in 1976 utilizing a unique, push-pull, mine ventilation plan. As the mine expands in size, the mine ventilation requirements will increase and a more comprehensive system for maintaining ventilation will be needed. A computer simulation study was completed and has resulted in a revised, systematic, mine ventilation plan which is being implemented as mine development proceeds. Based on the computer simulation study, the new ventilation plan takes into account mining of the orebody simultaneously from both the 8100 and 7700 production levels. Present experience and empirical data indicate that volumes of air needed to adequately ventilate both production levels cannot be obtained utilizing the existing mine layout. The total volume of air needed for the mine excluding haulage tunnel will increase from 708 m3/s (1 500 000 cfm) to 1652 m3/s (3 500 000 cfm), thus a new No. 5 exhaust shaft and connecting drifts are being developed to expand the mine ventilation system to service both production levels. The original ventilation plan for the 7500 haulage level was to bring air from the No. 2 and No. 3 intake shafts and exhaust it through the 94X raise to the 8035 exhaust level and then through the No. 1 exhaust shaft to surface. Control of air volumes in loading drifts was initially planned to be achieved by air doors and air curtains. Air doors on the 7500 level require large cutouts, expensive installations and constant maintenance. The computer simulation study indicates that air- flow in the 7500-level production drifts can be con- trolled exclusively by air curtains which are less expensive to install and more effective in regulating airflows than air doors. Air from the 7500 level can be exhausted through a new raise to the new 7635 exhaust level and then through the new No. 5 exhaust shaft.
