Blasting vibration information is now commonly used to diagnose blast malfunctions. These range from limiting vibration levels to protect normal dwellings to determining scatter in detonator firing times, and even to rating of explosives in the borehole. Although blasting vibrations have the potential to yield reliable information in all these issues, there are key restrictions on their specific use, which are often ignored. These include all aspects of instrumentation, and sensor layout, as well as methods of analysis. This paper highlights these limitations. It emphasizes the distinction between near-field and far-field seismic recording in terms of borehole dimensions and blast geometry. Several case studies from both underground and open-pit blasting operations are discussed to illustrate and emphasize the essential characteristics of blasting vibrations and their optimal use in diagnosing blast malfunctions.

A field inventory was made of the mineral, geologic, geothermal, and groundwater resources of three geologically recent lava fields in the desert of Oregon. The term "resource" was applied with care: a "resource" must have particular value or worth, although it need not be economically viable. The spectacular volcanic features of the area have particular scientific and general interest and thus constitute geologic resources. The mineral endowment, mostly occurrences of low unit value such as stone and cinders, in large part are not resources, due to market conditions, regulations, and other factors. These and other conclusions will be used by the Bureau of Land Management in its multiple land use planning process for the area.

IN 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temper-atures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several parti-cles had become one unit. From this dis-covery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the appli-cation of about 30c0 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper pro-duced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. Under his direction, this problem was solved by William H, Osborn and Harry Howard Stout, Jr. They developed the process and technique for producing cathode copper in brittle, friable form, and to them must be given the greater part of the credit for this phase of the development program as well as for that relating to the gas cleaning of the cathode particles.

The definition of refractory gold ores and concentrates, including mineralogical characteristics, is reviewed. The chemistry of roasting and process conditions such as feed size, temperature, and time are discussed. A typical metallurgical program for developing a roasting process scheme is presented. The application of various types of furnaces for roasting is described. Requirements for scrubbing off-gases to meet environmental air emission regulations, and general information regarding engineering design parameters for roasting are presented. Roasting is sound technology for processing refractory ores and concentrates, but it is essential that the metallurgy of each ore or concentrate is well defined before commercialization. A fluid-bed roaster is the preferred type of furnace for roasting. Environmental regulations for air emissions must be carefully addressed.

A number of investigators have studied the electrokinetic potential (?) of kaolinite as a function of pH. (1,2,3,4,5) These investigators all agree that the ? is negative except at quite acid pH values. The actual shapes of the curves reported by the several authors vary considerably. In spite of the general negative character of kaolinite the mineral has a rather high anion exchange capacity. (6,7,8) The cation exchange capacity is the lowest for the clay minerals. (6) It has been shown that anionic surfactants adsorb readily onto the mineral even up to neutrality, often in quantities exceeding the reported anion exchange capacity. (7,8) At least part of the anionic adsorption should be onto positive edge sites thought to exist on the mineral. (9,10) In the present study ? of kaolinite was measured as a function of pH using both the streaming potential (sp) and microelectrophoresis (m.e.p.) methods. In addition ? was measured at various pH values as functions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride (TMDAC) concentrations. In some experiments decyl alcohol (DA) was added.

Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident reconstruction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed, namely (i) remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sight-lines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

Such a schedule should specify when and if blocks should be extracted in such a way as to maximize NPV, while satisfying wall-slope and production capacity constraints. It is well known that this problem can be modeled with integer programming (IP). However, integer programming is not used in practice because the size of typical block models makes such problems intractable to standard IP solvers. In this article we describe a scalable IP-based methodology for solving very large (millions of blocks) instances of this problem. We show that embedding standard IP technologies in a local-search based algorithm we are able to obtain near-optimal solutions to large problems in reasonable time. This methodology has been tested in several mine wide block models.

The Woodcutters deposit, 65 km south- southeast of Darwin, N.T., consists of a series of veins of pyrite, sphalerite, and galena with some silver, cadmium, antimony, and arsenic minerals. The veins are hosted by the Early Proterozoic Whites Formation, a sequence of black slates with interbedded carbonate rocks and minor ash tuffs. The known orebodies occur about 300 to 500 metres above the contact of Whites Formation with the underlying Coomalie Dolomite, which consists of dolomite and magne- site. The stratigraphic setting is lithologic- ally similar to that of the Mt. Isa deposit, Queensland. The orebodies are replacement veins occ- urring along fault and dyke structures which are sub-parallel to the axes of a double-nosed faulted anticline. The orebodies are in part associated with two unusual carbonatized lam- prophyric dykes. The dykes were intruded after the fold and its slaty cleavage were formed. The ore has replaced the dykes and host rocks and is therefore late-stage hydrothermal miner- alization. The known orebodies are open at depth. A "bonanza" of high-grade ore occurs at the upper part of the largest orebody and is currently the subject of an open cut mine planning study by a consortium of companies headed by Nicron Resources Ltd.

The known high grade mineral re- sources in the United States are fast becoming exhausted; viable new deposits are more difficult to find and more expensive to develop; operating and capital costs have increased to meet more stringent regulatory standards. By contrast, international producers enjoy a cost advantage as a result of higher mining grades, improving technological competence, and more favorable government support. The domestic base minerals industry is finding it more and more difficult to compete in world markets. It has become essentially a marginal industry today. The current philosophy of taxation in the United States has evolved over the past century. The structure of the taxing system is based on the assumption that a firm must be able to pay its tax imposts out of profits. In principle, firms incapable of supporting the tax load should be replaced by others that can do so. This philosophy applies equally well to the mining industry, so long as it remains economically healthy. However, mineral resources are finite. The situation in the domestic base mineral industry has changed fundamentally in recent times. For the reasons given above, much of the industry now cannot continue to compete profitably in the open world market; and there are no known alternative domes- tic mineral resources more capable of doing so. Under these circumstances it is important to consider the effect of taxation not only on profitability, but also on survivability.

Transmission-electron micrographs of electro-thinned samples of bulk-aged Cu-3.1 pet Co alloy show an aging sequence, supersaturated solid solution — coherent particles — quasi -coherent particles — noncoherent particles. Hardening is due to precipitation of coherent spherical fee coball-rich particles showing coherency strain fields, which are resolved at between 15 and 30A diameter. Loss of- full coherency did not occur until well into the overaged region, even with the assistance of deformation after aging. Different average particle diameters of 123, 92, and 149 ± 10Å were observed in samples aged to peak yield strength at 600°, 650°, and 700°C, respectively, indicating that there is no critical size for peak hardening. Noncoherent particles tended to develop (111) faces and became octahedral in shape. Dislocations tended to nucleate spherical coherent particles which eventually grew together forming large elongated particles. The surface energy of a noncoherent (low-angle) inter-phase boundary is estimated to he about 50 ergs per sq cm. A number of particle lining-up phenomena were observed. Overaging is principally attributed to increase in particle spacing, progressive loss of coherency, and increase in amount of discontinzdous precipitation. COPPER dissolves about 5.6 at. pet (5.2 wt pet) of cobalt at 1110oC1 and the solubility decreases to 0.75 at. petl (0.54 at. pet)2 at 650°C and to 0.1 at. pet or less at lower temperature.' It has been known for many years3-5 that Cu-Co alloys are capable of age hardening. Since cobalt is fee above 417°C and its atom size is only about 2 pet smaller than that of copper, precipitation of coherent particles would be expected. The equilibrium phase precipitated at 700°C and below contains about 10 pet Cu in solution which tends to stabilize the fee structure, lowering the transformation temperature to 340oc.l The alloy is known to undergo discontinuous precipitation in addition to general precipitation; while the former can be seen with an optical microscope, the latter precipitates are not visible except in the grosly overaged condition.5, 6 Extensive use has therefore been made of the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate in order to follow the course of aging, and it has proved possible to measure the average particle size, spacing, approximate shape, and volume fraction and to determine that the particles are coherent without ever seeing a particle (see for example Refs. 2, 7, and 8). The magnetic measurements of particle size are limited to diameters below about 120Å.7 The present study was undertaken using the techniques of transmission-electron microscopy in order to check the above conclusions, to extend the previous magnetic work to larger particle sizes, and to attempt a more detailed correlation of properties and structure. A portion of this work has already been published.9-11 The present paper is concerned with the metallographic features of precipitation in relation to aging curves. Bonar and Kelly12'13 have published preliminary results of a similar study on single crystals of Cu-2 at. pet Co. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloy. A Cu-Co alloy, containing 3.12 wt pet (3.36 at. pet) Co by analysis, was prepared from 99.999 pet purity oxygen-free copper and electrolytic-grade cobalt. The alloy was melted and cast in vacuo in a high-frequency furnace using a graphite crucible and mold: Analysis showed chat 0.004 pet C was picked up during melting. The 1-1/2-lb ingot was homogenized in hydrogen for 24 hr at 1000°C. Slices were cold-rolled to 0.005 or 0.003 in. thickness, with an intermediate 650°C anneal in hydrogen at 0.080 in. thickness. Batches of six to ten strips were solution-treated in sealed-off quartz tubes in high vacuum in a vertical furnace and quenched by dropping into iced brine containing a device which snapped off the nose of the tube. Solution treatment consisted of 1 hr at 990°C or 2 hr at 965°C. The latter was employed for all mechanical-property studies, since a tendency was noted for the higher temperature to give porous material. Strips were usually aged individually in a horizontal vacuum furnace, inserting into the hot zone and withdrawing into a cold zone without breaking the vacuum. This method gave a rapid heating rate, permitting the use of short aging times. This Bureau of Mines report presents a method of standardizing forecasts of mineral consumption that attempts to resolve the problems caused by the use of different data bases, different definitions of minerals consumption, and different base years for making projections. Using this method, forecasts of U.S. and world mineral consumption, in the year 2000, for nine commodities (aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, tin, tungsten, and zinc) are standardized and compared. Also selected forecasts or associated growth rates are used to generate implied values of consumption for 1980-83, which are then compared to actual values of consumption for 1980-83. The economic growth predictions underlying the forecasts are examined, and some general conclusions are drawn. A description of each methodology used to generate these forecasts is given in an appendix.

INTRODUCTION The increased activity in the Aus­tralian gold industry over the last decade has resulted in a concomitant increase in the use of sodium cyanide, with a projected consumption of 80,000 tonnes in 1991. Growing environmental awareness by government, industry and the public has generated increased interest in the fate of cyanide near gold mine tailings dams and has highlighted the lack of basic knowledge in the area, particularly for Australian conditions. In 1989 the Chemistry Centre (W.A,) commenced a' project, under the auspices of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association entitled "Fate of cyanide in the Enviroment Near Mine Tailings" to investigate some of the issues arising from the management of tailings containing cyanide, The project, which has been supported by thirteen companies has three broad aims:

THE writer has carried on experimental work for several years with respect to the simultaneous dissolution of gold by cyanide and the adsorption of the dissolved gold on activated charcoal in ore pulps, fol-lowed by the recovery of the charcoal by flotation. The results of this experimental work have been sufficiently encour-aging to suggest a new process based on the principle of simultaneous dissolution and adsorption of gold, applicable to certain ores and tailings that cannot be treated to advantage by countercurrent decantation or filtration. Applications for patents have been filed and The Dorr Company, Inc. has the exclusive right to license the use of the process. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a process, state its pos-sible advantages and immediate field, and give some results obtained on a laboratory scale.

The investment decision making process in the insurance and finance industries is affected by new advances such as simulation techniques. These advances have improved the discounted cash flow method (DCF). In DCF, a dynamic and flexible model construction is not possible because it does not consider uncertain conditions. Each project should be evaluated taking into account the related uncertainties because the related uncertainties determine the characterization of the project. Related uncertainties can be processed in dynamic DCF, which is applicable to both financial and non-financial industries with different kind of uncertainties, such as power generation and petroleum projects. The dynamic DCF method can estimate net present value (NPV) while managing related project uncertainties with a simulation method like Monte Carlo Simulation. The simulation method is preferred because its output is unbiased. Therefore, a more realistic financial evaluation of the project can be concluded. In spite of the improvement of dynamic DCF, this project evaluation method is not used frequently in mining industry. However, the mining industry is ideally suited to this concept because it is highly dependent on estimations such as orebody size and ore grade. During the project evaluation stage, these uncertainties can be included with the dynamic DCF method. This study aims to contribute to increasing the usage of this method in mining projects. A copper reserve in Turkey is selected as a case study to apply uncertainty assessment for the evaluation of NPV.

"Chrysotile asbestos can be dyed with certain dyestuffs to form stable coloured products whose hemolytic and cytotoxicity are greatly reduced. Examples of these dyes are Thiazol Yellow G (a monazo dye) and Trypan Blue (a diazo dye). Other dye stuffs, for example, basic dyes with triphenyl methane structure, Brilliant Yellow (a diazo dye), and Methylene Blue (a thiazine dye) colour asbestos but do not reduce its toxicity. Similarly alizarin, 8-hydroxyquinoline, and representative members of the phthalein group Bromocresol Purple and Phenolphthalein.IntroductionThere is, at present, a controversy regarding the dangers of asbestos fibres, and attempts are being made to render it less toxic. One of these attempts consisted of treating chrysotile asbestos with gaseous phosphorus oxychloride, POCI], at ambient temperature and in absence of moisture. The product had to be heated at 300°C to 500°C to expel exess entrained reagent to get a material containing 0.5070 to 5% phosphate groups and known as Chrysophosphate (Lalancette and Dunnigan, 1982). This product showed decreased toxicity as measured by its hemolytic effect on red blood cells (fable 1). In another approach, Flowers (1983) showed that when chrysotile asbestos was thoroughly mixed with a solution of ferric ammonium sulphate and the slurry was then filtered and dried, the product showed a marked decrease in cytotoxicity.In the present investigation the problem of toxicity was considered from a different point-of-view. Chrysotile asbestos is a hydrated magnesium silicate that can be represented by the structural model shown in Figure 1 from which it can be seen that magnesium hydroxide groups, Mg(OH)2, form a part of the silicate structure. Certain organic reagents that are known to react with magnesium ion in solution to form chelates were reacted with asbestos to find out whether a chelate was also formed on the fibres, and if so , what will be the hemolytic action and cytotoxicity of the product."

The paper briefly summarises the work of the Titanium Research Section in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne and mentions the development of a new electrolytic process for titanium production. This process utilises the "hot-spot" cathode technique and titanium carbide anodes. An introduction is given to three further papers on titanium metallurgy to be presented to the Institute.INTRODUCTIONThe unique combination of strength, lightness and corrosion resistance possessed :by titanium and its, alloy has made them of great interest to engineers. However, high cost, difficulties of production and limited knowledge of techniques of application restrict their usage at present almost exclusively to high priority armaments.The cost of the metal is divided between extraction and processing and much research has been carried out to devise new and cheaper methods for winning the metal from its ores. Processing costs will be reduced when production volume increases.Extraction research is proceeding rapidly overseas and Kellogg (1955, p. 72) reports that 'at least seventeen companies in the U.S.A. are interested in titanium production. Of these, two are producing the metal by a modified Kroll process, three are building Kroll plants and the remainder are in various stages of research activity. The Horizons Corporation alone is contemplating electrolytic extraction and is building a pilot plant. Steinberg et aI. (1955, p. 252, p. 332) have reported the early work done by the HorizonsCorporation on electrolysis of potassium fluotitanate and titanium monoxide in fused salt electrolytes. Of these two, the former appears to be the more attractive process.

To gain knowledge of the actual accident hazards present in Kentucky coal mines, reports of fatalities during 1931, 1932, and 1933 have been analyzed and the pertinent factors included in tables, accompanied by some discussion and recommendations for the reduction of accidents from particular causes. THE Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss ; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very fre¬quent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45° to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65°. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed rock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places-where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage-a light-greenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition.
