This handbook describes effective methods for the control of methane gas in mines and tunnels. It assumes the reader is familiar with mining. The first chapter covers facts about methane important to mine safety, such as the explosibility of gas mixtures. The second chapter covers methane sampling, which is crucial because many methane explosions have been attributed to sampling deficiencies. Subsequent chapters describe methane control methods for different kinds of mines and mining equipment, primarily for U.S. coal mines. These coal mine chapters include continuous miners and longwalls, including bleeders. Coal seam degasification is covered extensively. Other coal mine chapters deal with methane emission forecasting and predicting the excess gas from troublesome geologic features like faults. Additional coal chapters contain methane controls for shaft sinking and shaft filling, for surface highwall mines, and for coal storage silos. Major coal mine explosion disasters have always involved the combustion of coal dust, originally triggered by methane. Thus, a chapter is included on making coal dust inert so it cannot explode. Methane is surprisingly common in metal and nonmetal mines around the world, as well as in many tunnels as they are excavated. Accordingly, a chapter is included on metal and nonmetal mines and another on tunnels. Proper ventilation plays the major role in keeping mines free of hazardous methane accumulations. The ventilation discussed in this handbook, except for the chapter on bleeder systems, deals only with so-called face ventilation, i.e., ventilation of the immediate working face area, not ventilation of the mine as a whole. The omission of whole-mine ventilation was necessary to keep this handbook to a reasonable size and because a huge amount of excellent information is available on the subject.2

The primary limiting factor for hoisting capacity from great depths is the self-weight of the typical steel wire ropes used for mine hoisting. Steel wire ropes possess properties making them very suitable for mine hoisting including high strength and durability, but have the negative characteristic of being relatively heavy in comparison with their strength. Also, as hoisting depths increase, the service life of steel wire ropes decreases due to the higher stresses and physical effects on the ropes. The significantly higher strength-to-weight ratio of synthetic ropes compared with steel ropes offers the primary advantage of hoisting a larger payload with a similar size rope and hoisting plant. The beneficial properties of synthetic ropes could be used to improve the overall economics of deep underground mining both for new deep shaft projects and for existing mining operations expanding to deeper orebodies. A research and development program has been initiated to evaluate the suitability of a fully synthetic rope for the mine hoisting application, including rope discard methodology and NDT testing. The three phases/projects are: 1) proof of concept with focus on coilability under load (successfully completed in 2012); 2) high speed and load durability optimization & NDT Development; and 3) in-situ mine trial.

A new method called Effective Dispersion Analysis of Reflections (EDAR) was recently developed to effectively analyze the dispersive waves generated from lateral impact to piles. This paper presents the results of nondestructive length estimation of existing piles through EDAR. EDAR provides a new visualization method for analyzing wave reflections by transforming the response into the frequency domain thus eliminating the need to perform difficult peak picking in the time domain. In addition to being able to analyze dispersive waves, EDAR also incorporates the effects of radiation damping due to the surrounding soil leading to more accurate length estimates. Concrete filled steel tubes of different embedment depths were tested both in laboratory and field conditions. Length estimates obtained were within 10% error margins after careful analysis accounting for the presence of soil effects and effects from pile top reflection.

There are large areas on all of the continents with environments which are favorable for deposits of zinc and lead of Mississippi Valley type. In the developed countries, these environments have for the most part been quite thoroughly explored for the near surface deposits, and it will be necessary to direct more effort to the search for deeper buried deposits from which much of our future production must come. The difficulties of exploration for deep ore of this type are many and formidable, but the area of permissive environments beneath deep cover is many times as great as the area of the known near surface ore districts. It is a reasonable assumption, therefore, that numerous deposits wait for discovery and development. The finding cost, however, is certain to increase, and it is essential that concepts and techniques of exploration be improved if we are to sustain a reasonably strong productive capability into the 21st century. Exploration for deeply buried deposits requires at the outset relatively large areas of favorable geologic environment. The favorable horizons must be within economic limits of depth for the exploration as well as for the mining techniques which are currently available; and there must be some condition, design or strategy which will assure the explorer a reasonable chance of obtaining maximum benefit from discoveries which he may make.

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations.

Assist in controlling or extinguishing fires that occur in abandoned mine lands (AML) by providing a compilation of information on past fire control projects, the estimated extent of the current problem, and factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML tires. Conventional fire control methods and their probable effectiveness are evaluated. Background Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard from toxic fumes, deterioration of air quality, and subsidence. Although fires on AML occur in every coal-producing State, the severity of the problem varies, with most underground fires occurring in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. Surface fires are prevalent in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and scaling, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success (see figures 1 and 2). Bureau of Mines Study The Bureau compiled information from a variety of sources and found that the problem of AML fires is a serious one. Such fires can involve a high degree of hazard and can be difficult and costly to control. AML fires usually involve smoldering combustion in outcrops, waste banks, or abandoned mines. Given the nature of these fires, it is unlikely that the extent of the problem or the cost of solutions will decrease in the near future.

This paper presents a case history of a successful construction-phase pile load test program that optimized the pile design in challenging ground conditions at the Great Neck Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The improvements and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant included the construction of several new structures to comply with new stringent nitrogen discharge requirements and new design flow. The challenging ground conditions included up to 20-ft thick organic deposits with weight of hammer blow counts and up to 14 percent organic content and tidal ground water that was near the ground surface. The foundation design evaluated various deep foundation alternatives and selected driven closed-ended pipe piles then filled with concrete as the most suitable foundation. The selection process included considerations of cost, risk, vibrations, noise, and schedule. The contract documents utilized an innovative approach of performing an optimization load test program that was implemented during construction to optimize pile lengths and reduce potential vibration and construction schedule. This paper discusses the details of the successful load test program including static testing, dynamic testing, and the innovative contracting approach utilized to implement the construction phase load test program. It also discusses the successful development and implementation of driving criteria for production piles and construction challenges. The successful load test program resulted in savings of several hundred thousand dollars, optimized schedule, and lower environmental impacts.

Lightweight basic refractories suitable for use in some sections of the all-basic furnace were developed. Potential advantages of such refractories are lower weight, improved resistance to thermal shock, and less tendency to spall off the working face. Plant trials in positions not subject to heavy loading or severe erosion seem warranted. Forsterite (2MgO.SiO2), stabilized dolomite (2Ca0?SiO2 + MgO), and chrome-spinel [(Fe,Mg)0?(Cr,Al) 031 refractories were fabricated using bubbles as the principal component in the brick mixtures. Bubbles were blown from melts of the basic raw materials as they were tapped from a conducting-hearth arc-resistance furnace. The bubbles were graded, bonded with synthetic Forsterite plus mineralizers, dry-pressed, and fired to temperatures of 1,600° C. or over in a gas-fired kiln. Refractory properties of the bubble brick were compared with those of insulating refractories made by burning combustibles out or dense brick mixtures. Lightweight refractories fabricated of bubbles were one-third lighter in weight than dense bricks of like materials. Their mechanical strength was satisfactory, and their resistance to thermal shock was excellent. In tolerance to open-hearth slag and in resistance to thermal shock, the chrome-spinel bubble bricks wore the best of the refractories tested. Basic refractories of the insulating type were about 40 percent lighter in weight than dense commercial refractories, but they were mechanically weak and not suitable for superduty service.

The purpose of this study was to determine if miners are at risk from exposures to chemicals used in the mining industry, and determine the nature and sources of the illnesses and injuries. The authors reviewed the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) Employment and Accident, Injury, and Illness database and identified 2,705 cases of chemical-related injuries and illnesses that were reported to MSHA from 1999-2006, involving 66 different chemicals. The main source (cause) of chemical-related cases was acids/alkalis (about 39%). The primary nature (effect) of chemical-related cases was chemical burns (about 57%). The job classification where workers incurred the most chemical-related injuries and illnesses was cleaning plant operator/media operator/boney preparation plant operator/crusher worker. The number of nonfatal days lost did not change significantly and overall, the incidence rate of chemical-related cases decreased by 36%. Chemical burns accounted for a large number of injuries; mining companies should carefully examine their personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, training methods, and safety culture to insure that their workers are protected.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a long-term groundwater monitoring and site characterization program at an abandoned 10-ha, acid-producing, copper-gold tailings impoundment in north-central Washington State. The purpose was to investigate contaminant release and transport, and attenuation mechanisms in the tailings, sediments below the tailings, and gravels downgradient of the impoundment. This report summarizes the monitoring results and physical properties of the tailings, the sediments below the tailings, and the groundwater system associated with the tailings. Water samples from the vadose and saturated zones of the impoundment were analyzed for 15 constituents. Concentrations of the same constituents were determined in water samples up to 3 m beneath the impoundment and in the shallow colluvium and deep bedrock at 76, 335, and 550 m downgradient and 168 m upgradient. Constituent concentrations within the tailings are quite variable and are influenced by pH, depth of oxidation, grain-size differential (surface area), hydraulic gradient, groundwater mixing, and the presence of hardpan layers, carbonaceous material, and organic matter. Most of the metal constituents decreased to background or near-background concentrations in the farthest downgradient well.

There's a right way and a wrong way to store diesel electric systems and similar equipment for generating on-site power, according to James Frankow, service manager for Allis-Chalmers Corp's Engine Division. In any event, the less storage the better. Many generating sets are stored before installation, especially when new construction is underway. Improper storage, or mothballing, can create initial reliability problems. Therefore; arrange for inside storage with no drastic extremes in temperature or humidity. If engines and alternators are stored in areas other than inside a dirt-free and temperature-controlled building, the unit or engine should be completely covered and protected against the environment. Before covering it with a canvas or with plastic, the unit should first be sealed at the following critical engine openings:

In this work, the selective reduction of lateritic nickel ore was carried out using sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium chloride as additives. The 5 wt% of anthracite coal, which contains 60.35% of fixed carbon and 1.9% of sulfur, was used as a reductant. All raw materials were mixed homogenously prior to the pelletization process into 10–15 mm of diameter. The reduction process was carried out to 50 g of pellets at 950 °C, 1050 °C, and 1150 °C for 60 min in a muffle furnace at atmospheric pressure. It continued with a wet magnetic separation process to separate ferronickel (concentrates) and impurities (tailings). Iron and nickel grade analysis was performed using XRF, while phase transformation and microstructure were analyzed with XRD and SEM–EDS. The results showed that the sodium sulfate was superior, resulting in the highest nickel grade in concentrate, i.e., 15.06%. The sulfidation mechanism, which could inhibit the metallization of iron, effectively increased the nickel grade in concentrate than decomposition of carbonate and chloridization process. The sulfur content in the reductant also influenced the selective reduction process. It promotes more sulfidation of iron, thus increasing the nickel grade in concentrate.

This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.

Over the past several years, Newmont Gold Company (previously Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation) developed a new technology for the flotation of refractory auriferous sulfide minerals which is referred to as the N2TEC flotation process. Starting in April 1997, the first commercial flotation plant utilizing N2TEC technology was successfully commissioned at the Lone Tree Mine near Valmy, Nevada. The Lone Tree flotation plant was designed to process 4,085 mt/d of ore producing 494 mt/d of sulfide concentrate. A flotation tails leach CIP circuit was added to recover cyanide-soluble gold from the flotation tails. A portion of the flotation concentrate is blended with whole ore feed to the Lone Tree autoclave, up to the limit imposed by the current oxygen plant capacity. The remainder of the concentrate is shipped to either the Twin Creeks autoclaves or the Carlin roaster for subsequent oxidation and gold extraction. This paper discusses the results achieved in the commercial flotation plant compared to pilot plant testing and engineering design flotation modeling. Capital and operating cost information are also presented.

During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. Off-highway truck purchasers know the amount of tonnes, pounds, kilograms, etc, a truck will carry. However just because a truck is rated at 240 tons may in no way correlate to what that truck will actually carry. Two numbers define the carrying capacity of an off-highway truck: 1. The weight carrying capacity of the truck; 2. The volume carrying capacity of the truck. These two numbers must be in sync or the amount of payload carried will vary from the carrying capacity of the truck. Currently the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard J1363 January 1985 defines the volumetric carrying capacity of an off-highway truck. However as is well known in several South American countries, the SAE standard overrates the truck’s effective volumetric carrying capacity 15% to 20%. This paper presents a method for measuring “effective” body volumetric carrying capacity, resulting in a truck body for carrying the targeted load, matched to the loading equipment that interacts positively with the truck chassis.

In the hope that a brief description of the conditions that are favorable or unfavorable to success in the practical treatment of titaniferous ores in the blast-furnace may not be without interest to the members of the Institute, the present paper is submitted. The class of ores of which I speak may be described as magnetites, with a gangue of siliceous matter, in which a portion of the silica is replaced by titanic acid. Professor Dana, in his System of Mineralogy, gives a long list of representative analyses of titanic iron ore in which the percentage of titanic acid varies from 59 down to 34. If the percentage is below the latter figure, the ore is no longer recognized as a "titanic ore;" although, according to my experience, titanic acid is present, in small quantities, in almost all ores. In the methods followed in ordinary analysis it is usually included with the "insoluble matter," unless special search is made for it. In the ores usually regarded as "titanic "the proportion of titanic acid frequently assumes quasi definite percentages, such as from 4 to 5, 8 to 9,12 to 13, and so on, in an ascending scale to those higher percentages that do not at present concern us. The proportions quoted characterize large masses of ore that are now accessible to market and are lying idle only on account of the titanic stigma. My experience with titanic acid in the furnace began in England, fourteen years ago, with my being employed as chemist by the manager of the Norwegian Titanic Iron Company, which was at that time smelting, without mixture, ilmenite from Norway in a furnace 16' X 50'. The process, regarded as a process, was a perfect success; but the enormous quantity of fuel required, the small quantity of iron in the ore, and the cost and uncertainty of importation militated seriously against its commercial success, and a few years saw the attempt abandoned. TEIS paper, which is merely an arrangement of data collected during several hurried journeys, is offered to serve as a record, until such time as a better substitute be compiled. My observations were confined, as far as possible, over the entire distance, to the actual river valley; because near the Central Cordillera the country is so mountainous as to be im; passable in any direction but that of the dominant valleys. The river is not navigable anywhere, and for the first part of its course is a mountain torrent that runs down the bottom of narrow, almost vertical-sided valleys, through which the only road requires repeated fording, and often following up the bed of the stream ; but the rock-walls, standing clean and free from debris on either side, present the different formations with remarkable distinctness. A topographical map and a cross-seetion of the Rio Huasco is given in Fig. 1. The Rio Huasco practically rises from Laguna Grande, a lake about 17 km. from the Argentine boundary, and 3,135 m. above se-level, which is fed by direct snow-water, and by a few streams varying from a considerable volume, when supplied by the melting snow, in late spring, to little or nothing during the rest of the year. It is a somewhat pear-shaped body of water, about 1.5 miles in length and half a mile in average width, with a reported maximum depth of 45 meters. It was formed by the choking up of a narrow continuation of the same valley with blocks of an agglomerate mentioned later. The present level is some 5 m. below high-water mark (to which point, according to local accounts, it has not been filled for 35 years). In the intervening margin is a calcareous deposit about 4 m. thick, formed by the rapid evaporation of the water in the exceedingly dry air, and aided by the capillary action of an aquatic plant, growing in thick masses around the edge of the lake.
