It may seem to be almost unnecessary to occupy the time of the Institute in further consideration of a question which has been so comprehensively treated in papers already on file in our own Transactions and in those of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Unfortunately, however, the results of these concerted efforts have not been materially to increase our stock of Knowledge in the direction sought for; and as the necessity for this information is becoming.more and more apparent as the demand for structural materials increases, it is believed that by continuing the agitation by means of discussions in this and kindred societies, whose members are vitally interested in obtaining reliable data as to the properties of the materials they are called upon to work with, public opinion may be educated up to the importance of exerting such an influence upon the law-makers of the country as will result in the formation of a competent board, with adequate means at its disposal, to carry out this great work in a manner alike acceptable to the makers and users of the materials in question. It may be proper in the first place to glance briefly at what has been attempted thus hr, then to indicate some of the more important lines of needed investigation, and finally to consider reasons why government aid may with propriety be sought for in carrying on the work. Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. "Very seldom is it possible when contacting a gas with a slurry to measure the dissolved gas concentration in the slurry, and even where possible, equilibrium data with a suitable Henry.s law constant are seldom available.In general, by assuming a reasonable value for the dissolved gas concentration in the slurry and a corresponding equilibrium gas partial pressure P*, KGa values can be calculated for the pilot plant and then scaled up. Then, with the same P* value at various reaction conditions, a mixer can be designed which is quite satisfactory, having a reasonable design factor for full-scale performance."

Este trabalhou lidou com a avaliação de amostras de tijolo de argila para alvenaria estrutural com adição de resíduo cerâmico cujas dimensões nominais são 11,5x39,0x19,0 cm. As amostras foram queimadas nas temperaturas 700°C e 800°C. Elas foram coletadas em uma fábrica de cerâmica vermelha em Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brasil. De um lote, a amostra contendo 20 tijolos de alvenaria já queimada em seu forno a 700°C foi coletada, e também a amostra contendo 20 tijolos de alvenaria do mesmo lote secos apenas pelo ar, que foram queimadas em um forno de mufla a uma temperatura de 800 ° C. As amostras foram submetidas aos testes recomendados pela ABNT NBR 15270: 2005 para determinar suas propriedades geométricas, físicas e mecânicas. A ABNT NBR 15270: 2005 recomenda formulações específicas para determinar a resistência à compressão característica (fbk) da alvenaria de tijolos de argila que, para ser classificada, deve ser de pelo menos 3 MPa. Portanto, também usamos o Método Gráfico de Probabilidade e o Método da Máxima Verossimilhança para estimar os parâmetros de distribuição para comparar os resultados obtidos nos testes realizados.

Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge'. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields' (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . ' had revealed that the sludge had ' . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . '. It also noted that ' . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . '. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers' which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping' overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The thickness of the sludge capping varies between a few centimetres and three metres (Peterson, 1996). Copper precipitates from a iron as fcc E phase without formation of intermediate compounds. In the first stage of the precipitation, spherical particles with diameters < 100A are formed at a high rate. During the second stage, the particles grow at a rate given by Zener&apos;s equation for growth of a spherical precipitate. In the third stage, growth is slower. Rod-shaped particles form after long aging times at 700°C. Maximum strengthenzng was observed at the beginning of the second step of precipitation. During plastic deformation of the aggregate, particles appear to deform initially by twinning. THE work discussed herein was part of a study of precipitation of substitutional elements from a iron. Copper was chosen as one of these substitutional elements because it has about the same atomic size as a iron, and does not form an intermetallic compound with iron. The data on the iron-copper system then available were summarized by Daniloff1 several years ago. The solubility of copper in a iron has been determined by electrical conductivity measurements,2 lattice parameter measurements,3 and by saturating thin iron foils with copper and determining the copper content.4 The results of the three investigations do not agree very well, but the value of 2.4 wt pct for the maximum solubility at 840°C seems to be the most reliable,4 Fig. 1. An alloy containing 1.23 wt pct Cu was used in our work to assure starting with a completely homogeneous material. Adsorption of gold on activated carbon from gold bromide solutions was examined as a function of pH, particle size, carbon amount, initial gold bromide concentration, bromine concentration, temperature, and various cations and anions. pH did not have any effect below pH=6. Above pH=6, pH had dramatically negative effect. The adsorption results satisfied a first reaction order model. The reaction rate constant was proportional to the inverse of carbon particle radius. It was also proportional to the amount of carbon, and independent of initial gold concentration. Temperature had a very little effect at pH=l. At pH=8, the activation energy was a function of the extent of a reaction, increasing with the extent of a reaction. Cu, Fe, Ca, Mg, and Na cations and sulfate, chloride and bromide anions did not have any effect on gold adsorption. Bromine had a very negative effect on gold uptake.

THERE has been comparatively little work on the importance of strain rate and temperature as variables in the formation of deformation textures. For this reason the present work was started, the choice of compression being in part that of convenience and in part because of the absence of quantitative data in this area. These do not turn out to be important variables within the range studied which permits the results to be condensed into this note. Samples 1/4 in. in diam and 1/2 in. long were machined from 99.9 pct pure commercial aluminum and recrystallized to a fine grain size. A set of five samples were deformed between a spring-driven weight and an anvil resulting in roughly 20 pct strain each time. The strain rate varied because of decle-ration and shortening of the sample but would average about 10&apos; per min. Deformation at temperatures over the range of -76" to 150°C were obtained by heating or cooling the samples. Complete lubrication could be obtained by oil since the short time of contact did not permit its escape. The samples were compressed to a total true strain of 1.4 to 1.6. A larger sample was prepared similarly with spiral grooves in the ends to hold paraffin which provided essentially complete lubrication. This sam ple was compressed slowly at room temperature at a rate of about 2 per min to a total strain of 1.0. Cylindrical samples were carefully machined from these discs with a radial direction as an axis. They came from the center half of the samples and were roughly 1/16 in. in diam. The samples were etched down 15 pct to remove any surface effects. Diffraction data were then obtained for six different kinds of planes by the use of the Norton technique as applied to a fiber texture. Direct comparison between the raw data failed to reveal any significant difference between any of the samples and consequently the data from only one sample was completely reduced. The particular sample had been deformed at O°C The background was subtracted from the intensity data which were averaged over the four quadrants and then normalized to random. These data were then used to obtain fiber-axis distribution charts as previously described.2 For this sample the (422) plane was also run to assist in this inversion. The final result, Fig. 1, provided a comparable fit to that previously obtained from fiber data. About 85 pct of the material forms an elliptical texture around the <110> direction. The radius (at half height) is 5.5 deg along the (111) boundary and 8 deg along the (100) boundary. The remaining 15 pct forms a ridge running from this texture to near the <311> direction. The regions around the (100) and (111) planes are devoid of material. The earlier qualitative results of ~arrett~ are in complete agreement with the present results. The possibility has been dis-cused that the material around the <311> results from friction between the sample and compression plates.4 The present results are considered proof that such is not the case because of the uniformity of sample deformation and the requirement of axial symmetry before fiber-axis distribution charts can be accurately obtained. Recently results have been obtained to show that strain rate and temperature are important variables in the extrusion of aluminum.5 Perhaps the most important observation was that the partial recrystal-lization occurred even at room temperature. Strain rate was considered to be a factor only in that it produced a temperature change. There are many differences between the two experiments, the most important possibly being that their material was roughly ten times the purity of the present material. The present experiment, however, may not be as definitive as desired in this respect since it has been shown that compressed aluminum recrystallizes without a texture change6 although supplementary

The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) has been successfully applied to two very different tunneling projects in the U.S.. In the case of Pittsburgh&apos;s Mt. Lebanon Tunnels, two original design alternatives were prepared. The NATM alternative incorporating a reinforced shotcrete final lining was successfully bid and constructed. At Washington Metro&apos;s (WMATA) Section B-10 Glenmont Route, Wheaton Station and tunnels, a NATM value engineering redesign was prepared for the low bidder. The design incorporating a waterproofing system based on a PVC membrane between the initial and final linings was accepted by WMATA. In both cases, European experience and standards were meshed with U.S. standard practice. Examples of NATM flexibility as an original design and as a value engineering proposal are presented.

Materials for Winding Plant Components By Prof. G. T. van Rooyen (ScD) (MIT). Materials for critical applications such as winding plant components are reviewed in terms of the basic requirements which have to be complied with. It is shown that tensile testing alone is not sufficient and that impact testing also is necessary if the incidence of brittle fracture is to be avoided. As a criterion it is suggested that the brittle transition temperature (B.T.T.) determined by impact testing should in all cases be well below the lowest anticipated service temperature. A number of steels were evaluated by impact testing and it is shown that a small ferrite grain size, obtained either by chemical means such as by the use of appropriate alloying elements in the steel or by means of a quenching heat treatment, is effective in attaining a Iow B.T.T. The speed of strain aging as well as the influence of strain aging on the B.T.T. was also evaluated. On the basis of the results obtained it is recommended that steels for critical applications must conform to an appropriate grade and class of steel according to BS 4360 specification. It is further recommended that such steels be exempted from the customary six-monthly heat treatment prescribed by the Mines and Work Act, Regulation 16,18.

History.—The making of iron and steel from the ores of northern Mexico was for years a favorite project of the late Don Patricio Milmo, upon whose estate large deposits of coal and iron were known to exist, and with whom Mr. Eugene Kelly, of New York, was associated. Several expert examinations of the property mere made for them; and when failing health forced Sr. Milmo to retire from active part in the matter, Mr. Kelly carried on the project and associated himself with Messrs. Vicente Ferrara, of Monterrey, Antonio Basagoiti and Leon Signoret, of the City of Mexico, and other leading citizens of Mexico, Monterrey and New York, who, in May, 1900, organized the " Compania Fundidora de Fierro y Acero de Monterrey," with a capital of $10,000,000. The main reason for locating the plant at Monterrey was, that a circle drawn with Monterrey as a center, and the distance from Monterrey to Laredo as a radius, will contain all the known Deposits of iron-ore of Bessemer quality, and the greater part of the available coal, in the Republic. Moreover, Monterrey is connected with all the Mexican trunk railwaylines, and thus with the Gulf of Mexico, and supplies, therefore, the conditions necessary for prosperous manufacturing, namely, cheapness in assembling raw materials and means for wide distribution of product. It also has a number of enterprising citizens, who have been successful in mining, smelting and manufacturing operations, and a sufficiently large population to supply the necessary labor. The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering&#174; is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering&#174; is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering&#174; is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. The Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority (TRWRA) in Monmouth County, New Jersey, is replacing its aging Pleasure Bay Interceptor (PBI) with a new 54-in interceptor in a 3,250-foot long 8 to 10-foot diameter tunnel and a new 50-mgd main pump station (MPS). A comprehensive phased geotechnical investigation was performed, including SPTs, CPTs and geophysics. A channel filled with soft marine sediments was identified. The tunnel is set in stiff to hard marine soil to enable using a less expensive open-face TBM. The thickness of tunnel cover under the channel is optimized through numerical analyses to avoid a deeper pump station yet maintaining tunnel stability with controlling seepage.

"Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

A simple mineralogical regression model is described, which was devised in order to help the flotation plant cope with rapidly changing headgrades and feed mineralogy. Minerals in the feed were determined by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction and compared with plant performance parameters and flotation reagent consumption rates, using regression analysis. A mineralogical regression model for predicting recovery served to motivate flotation plant personnel and also set standards whereby flotation performance could be measured. The reagent consumption model indicated in which direction any or all of five flotation consumption rates should be altered. All practically measurable parameters, even those showing poor or no correlation, were included in the model, provision being made for the continuous update of a batch of data of 30 lines. Compared with the method of multiple linear regressions, the r2 is poorer at 0,41 (versus 0,50), but the mean standard error of estimate for both methods is identical at ± 6,6 units. The regression model is simpler than the method of multiple linear regressions, and although the accuracy of prediction is not high (41%), the mineralogical regression model proved to be successful in practice. Flotation efficiency, as measured by the mean ratio of head to tails grade, for the 9 month period after the mineralogical regression model was implemented on an hourly basis, improved from 2,8 to 3,2, which is equivalent to an improvement in average flotation recovery of 5% relative.

The 76th Regular Meeting of The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened at The Mark Conference Center, Lionshead Village, Vail, Colorado, and was in session at 9:30 a.m. A film-"Once Upon a Time" showing the stifling effect of unnecessary government regulations and the importance of protecting economic political freedoms was shown. Linville, District Sales Manager, Industrial Products Division, Uniroyal, Inc. A biographical sketch follows: Loren V. Linville was born on December 29, 1925 on the family farm near Wiley, Colorado to Scott W. and Hazel Linville. He has one sister, a teacher in the public schools and a brother who is an optometrist in Gustine, California. Loren grew up in Lamar, Colo. graduating from Lamar High School in 1944 and spent the folllowing 2 years as a radioman in the US Navy. He graduated from Denver University in 1950 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. On September 12, 1948 he married Norma. They have 3 children, Linelle, a teacher in New Mexico, Bruce an electronic technician in Colorado Springs and Kevin at home.

TWO of the aluminum-alloy systems previously studied—the aluminum-titanium and the aluminum-chromium—exhibit a peritectic reaction at the extreme aluminum end of the diagram. Preliminary work indicated that the aluminum-zirconium and certain other aluminum systems were similar in this respect. The present paper, the twentieth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, reports the results of a recent investigation of equilibrium relations in aluminum-zirconium alloys of high purity, which confirm the preliminary observations. Previous Investigations There has been only one investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-zirconium system. Sykesl prepared and studied alloys containing 0 to 70 per cent Zr. The lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of zirconium was found to be very little, if any (less than 2" C.). He placed the solid solubility of zirconium in aluminum at room temperature between 0.57 and 0.97 per cent. A few other investigators have attempted to determine the composition of the intermetallic compounds occurring in this system. Honigschmid2 obtained the compound ZrAla as a by-product during the preparation of ZrSi2. He made no attempt to prepare other aluminum-zirconium compounds. Weiss and Newmann3 prepared an alloy by heating aluminum with a double fluoride of potassium and zirconium. When this alloy was treated consecutively with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, there was a residue, which contained approximately 72 per cent Zr and 28 per cent A1 (Zr3AI4). Marden and Rich4 prepared an alloy in the same way, treated it with caustic soda, and obtained a residue of silver-white crystals, which contained 70 per cent Zr and 30 per cent A1 (Zr3A14).
