"The Station “C13” of Warsaw Underground Line II, with tunnel crown 10m below the water table, required the excavation of three connection tunnels, underpassing a six-lane in service road tunnel, working from two lateral shafts. After the collapse occurred while digging the first tunnel, the use of artificial ground freezing was chosen to ensure the excavation under safe conditions. A complex freezing pipe geometry and excavation sequencing was necessary because of the interferences of the overlying road tunnel diaphragm wall foundations, shaft internal structures and previous grouting activities. A combined freezing method was used: nitrogen for freezing the tunnel arches, brine for freezing the intermediate wall and for maintenance stages. Sandy and silty sandy layers were frozen around the crowns and sides. No treatment was necessary for the inverts, lying in clay. A monitoring system of ground temperatures and structure movements allowed for successful completion of work in 8 months. INTRODUCTION The C13 Station of the Warsaw Underground-Line II is located on the West bank of the Vistula River. It consists of two shafts and three connecting tunnels, passing under the Wislostrada (WS) Road tunnel. According to the initial geotechnical investigation, tunnels should have been excavated in high-plasticity clay, but during the first borings non cohesive soil was encountered. Additional investigations were performed on both shafts and a more detailed stratigraphy was reconstructed (Lombardi et al. 2015). Layers of fine sand, sandy silt and sandy silty clay were present along the tunnels crown arches and in the North East tunnel they extended down to the centre line (-13.735m above the Vistula River medium level). Based on the new stratigraphy, it was decided to stabilize the crown and control the groundwater inflow from the face with jet-grouting columns extending the treatment down to the clayey soil, but a collapse occurred in the North West tunnel with soil and water inflow inside the shaft."

In Sept., 1960, a steam-drive project was started in the solution-gas drive area of the Schoonebeek field. A part(ern of three five-spots and one four-spot was selected covering an area of 65 acres. The pay in the project area has good lateral continuity and dips slightly to the northeut; it is about SO ft thick and permeability increases from 1,000 and at the bottom to approximately 10,000 md at the top. The oil originally in place was 12.6 X 10' bbl. The oil has an in situ viscosity of about 180 cp. At the start of the steam drive the cumulative primary production due to. solution-ga.7 drive amounted id 4 Percent of the oil originally in place. Reservoir pressure had dropped about 120 psi and no significant primary re-.serves remained. Some 11.3 million bbl of steam (all steam quantities are expressed in barrels of water vaporized) have been injected, resulting in production of an additional 4.1 X I0 9bl of oil, or 33 percent of the oil originally in place. This corresponds to a cumulative oil-stearn rario of 0.37 bbllbbl. It appears that the steam preferentially moves r updip while liquids are produced mainly from downdip wells observations indicate that tile steam flows through only the upper part of the formation. The lateral steam distribution in the pattern is satisfacrory since several prodriction wells hardly reacted and, hence, cori tributcd little to the oil production. Production performance and results from material balance calcutlations agree satisfactorily with the results of large-,scale laboratory experiments. On the basis of these experirmental results the .steam drive, together with a cold water follow-up. is expected to bring ultimate recovery to a value of crt leas: 50 percent of the oil originally in place. No serious production problems have been encountered. However, due to mechanical fuilure, two old prodriction wells and one injection well had to be replaced. An extension of the. steam drive in this area is under connstruction. Introduction The Schoonebeek oil field, discovered in 1943 and developed after World War 11, is situated in the eastern part of the Netherlands. The main oil reservoir in this field is the Valanginian sand. A completely sealing fault divides this reservoir into two areas (Fig. 1): the southwestern part of the sand body where primary production is ob- tained by means of a solution-gas drive, and the remain. der where edge-water drive is the production mechanism. In the greater part of the field the reservoir consists of a single, unconsolidated sand body. The net thickness ranges from 30 to 100 ft and the top is between 2,400 and 2,800 ft below sea level. Formation permeability varies from approximately 10,000 md at the top to values of the order of 1,000 md at the bottom, and porosity is about 30 percent. The reservoir contains a paraffinic oil of 25" API gravity with an in situ viscosity of 160 to 180 cp. Initial oil saturation was high (85 to 90 percent). The relatively large quantity of oil in place (more than 10' bbl), and the low ultimate primary recoveries expected from this field — approximately 15 percent stock-tank oil initially in place (STOIIP) for the water-drive area and 5 percent STOIIP for the solution-gas drive area — clearly indicate ample scope for secondary recovery. Because ies-ervoir and crude characteristics made this field suitable for thermal secondary recovery, a hot-water drive project was started in the water-drive area about 10 years ago. A few years later a steam drive and an in situ combustion project were started in the solution-gas drive area. This paper deals with the performance of the steam-drive project, which was started in Sept., 1960, and which is still in operation. Design of Steam-Drive Project, An experimental investigation of the steam-drive process carried out by schenk in 19561 indicated that under schoonebeek conditions steam injection could be an attractive secondary recovery method. the findings and encouraging results of a pilot test in the Mene Grande field in venezuela,i led to the design of a steam-drive project in the schoonebeek field, Pruject Site and Pattern In 1958 the reservoir pressure in the solution-gas drive area had decreased to about 120 psi, and oil production rates of wells in this area had dropped to 7 to 10 B/D. The cumulative primary production was about 4 percent STOIIP, leaving an oil saturation of approximately 85 percent. In view of the large amount of oil left behind in the reservoir, the solution-gas drive area was selected for the planned steam-drive project. The area in the vicinity of Well S1 3 (Fig. 2) was considered to be suitable since it is at least partly isolated from the rest of the field by faults and the sand is relatively thick (about 80 ft).

Anthracite coals have been divided into three groups: (I) meta-anthracite, a high-carbon coal that is usually very slow to kindle and difficult to burn, at least on conventional equipment; (2) anthracite, a high-carbon low-volatile coal of widely accepted value as both a domestic and industrial fuel; and (3) semianthracite, a coal lying between anthracite and bituminous coal in carbon and volatile content, and also, generally speaking, in burning characteristics. Anthracite Groupings The technical differentiation between these groups, as defined by the A.S.A.-A.S.T.M. Sectional Committee on the Classification of Coals, is as shown in Table I. Tables 2 and 3 show typical analyses of anthracites and semianthracites and Figs. I to 3 show graphically the range of analytical samples. Table 4 shows the commercial sizes of coals. Meta-anthracite and Graphitic Anthracite Typical analyses from virtually every field in the United States indicate that there are few if any extensive deposits of meta-anthracite. Some of the anthracites of Rhode Island contain almost negligible quantities of volatile and would thus fall into the meta-anthracite grouping on a basis of analyses alone. However, their other characteristics indicate that it is doubtful whether they should be considered as fuels at all, but rather as graphite. In fact, this material is being mined for use as foundry facings and furnace linings.4 A typical analysis of Fenners Lodge graphite,4 from Rhode Island, is: graphitic carbon, 55.9 per cent; silica (ash), 40.6; sulphur, 1.6; moisture, 1.9; volatile, o. Other Rhode Island coals possess percentages of volatile that would throw them into the normal anthracite rather than the meta-anthracite class. However, this "volatile" is nearly all noncombustible,3,4 being composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide and inert gases, therefore its definition as volatile is open to discussion, leaving the exact classification of the fuel a moot question. The Sukari project, which is owned by Centamin Egypt Ltd, is located in southern Egypt, 770 km south of Cairo but close to the Red Sea. The project is the first new gold development in Egypt and was commissioned in the middle of 2009. In 2007, Centamin purchased the CIL plant from the Kori Kollo mine in Bolivia. This plant was originally designed to treat 6.5 Mtpa of oxide ore. The Sukari deposit contains an oxide zone close to surface with a thick zone of mixed oxide and sulphides below this. The sulphides contain relatively coarse pyrite and arsenopyrite with fine <10 µm gold inclusions. Eventually, the sulphide ore will be mined from underground. Metplant Engineering Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Bateman Engineering Pty Ltd was contracted to design modifications and additions to the Kori Kollo plant to enable it to treat the Sukari ores. The plant was designed to treat the three ore types in stages. Throughput was set to 4 Mtpa, dueto Sukari ore being harder, at a head grade of 1.7 g/t to produce 200 000 oz of gold. The oxide circuit was based on the use of the Kori Kollo plant and the difference with mixed ore was that the oxide circuit would treat flotation tailings rather than ore. This circuit has a leach capacity of 26 000 m3 and residence time of 24 hrs The main feature of the upgraded mixed ore plant was the addition of a flotation circuit to produce a concentrate which would be reground and treated in a separate leach and elution circuit. Ore is crushed in a gyratory crusher and the comminution circuit uses a conventional SABC producing a product with a P80 of 150 microns. The throughput of 580 tph of oxide ore and 500tph of mixed ore was set to match the mills from Kori Kollo, with the addition of the pebble crusher to accommodate the more competent Sukari ore. The flotation circuit comprises a single rougher circuit to maximize recovery. The concentrate is thickened prior to regrinding which is carried out in a tower mill and two SMD mills operating in series. The final product, with a P80 of 12 microns, from the regrind circuit is leached in a CIL circuit with a total capacity of 2 550 m3. Gold is recovered through a conventional pressure Zadra circuit. Tailings from both circuits report to separate tailings thickeners and are pumped to a tailings storage facility. The circuit is designed to maximize the recovery of water. The project lies in one of the driest deserts in the world and a feature of the operation is the use of sea water from the Red Sea. This water is pumped 25 km from the coast.

"Previous papers (McNulty 1998 and 2004) have dealt with the causes of successful and less successful achievement of design production rate by new processing plants in the minerals industry. Examination of many case histories has allowed the construction of curves or profiles that represent projects with similar characteristics that equate to differing degrees of care exercised during the project development phase. Simplistically, decreasing care is reflected by increasing risk and a heightened likelihood of poor technical and/or financial performance.This contribution provides an update, including recent case histories, and presents a modified Series 1A curve that includes the best 23 case histories, out of a total of 81 examined, or 28%. This is done to show that some very carefully developed and executed projects can ramp-up quickly and that owners of new projects should avoid being too pessimistic in projecting early cash flow if they are certain that they have done their homework. The role of metallurgical process development in the reduction of project risk is discussed and several financial analyses are presented that express the potential monetary value of a well-designed and professionally executed metallurgical program."

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The individuality of off-highway trucks is largely determined by a number of truck components that include beds, frames, and suspensions. With the exception of tires, these features are generally standard equipment and the mine operator gets "what comes with the truck." With the advent of larger trucks, more complicated haul profiles, and sophisticated production control systems, a new truck support-component industry is rapidly appearing. The impact of the new options for off-highway trucks can be significant in terms of future fleet performance. Innovations include "Mesabi" radiator cores that reportedly offer greater engine temperature control; load indicators that insure proper truck loading at the shovel; and digital communication systems that signal truck status in the haulage cycle. The Material Service Thornton quarry is a multi-million annual production tons complex. Surrounded by busy surface highways, and divided by a railroad on the north/south axis and further divided by a major interstate highway on the east/west axis, blasting is a daily challenge. This paper deals with the problems of production blasting in an area adjacent to that interstate highway, and paralleling a busy four-lane highway. Discussion includes primary blasting issues such as borehole size, drill patterns and flyrock controls. Discussion also includes blast designs, timing schematics, smooth-wall blasting solutions, traffic and vibration concerns and many other factors influencing the success of this project.

This article deals with open pit mine planning and a computer technology known as Direct Block Scheduling, or “DBS”. This is an emerging technology for modeling mine exploitation strategies using mixed-integer linear programming. This technique has proved to yield stronger economic results compared to the Lerchs-Grossmann (“LG”) algorithm currently used at the beginning of the mine planning process. The article briefly describes the shortcomings of current practice; then, this delves into the superior results obtained by DBS technology compared to current practice. Finally, the article argues that results achieve so far by DBS could be enhanced even further. To do this, the framework to apply this emerging technology, which is also used in current practice, should be modified to better exploit the capabilities of DBS technology. To better understand this change, an illustrated case study is presented at the end of the article.

A novel process for the preparation of a-Al2O3 from secondary aluminum dross was studied. Factors including alkali dross ratio, salt dross ratio, smelting temperature, smelting time, leaching temperature, leaching time, and the solid-liquid ratio, which possibly influence the transfer of Al into water were studied, and the feasibility of using seed precipitation as a treatment technology of the leachate was discussed. The optimum condition of the process was determined as: alkali dross ratio 1.3, salt dross ratio 0.7, smelting temperature 500°C, smelting time 60min, leaching temperature 60°C, leaching time 30min, solid-liquid ratio 1:4. The results show that using the seed precipitation method, the leaching of aluminum reaches 92.71%, demonstrating the technique as a feasible and effective treatment technology of the leachate.

Flotation is an important process used in the concentration of iron ores. One of the challenges for process engineers is the low metallurgical recovery associated mainly with the fines fraction. In this work, the use of synthetic flocculants in iron ore reverse cationic flotation was investigated. The flocculants utilised were polyacrylamides of high molecular weight and different ionic degrees. Bench scale flotation tests were performed to compare the flotation performance with and without addition of polyacrylamides. It was observed that cationic and non-ionic polyacrylamides cause a significant increase in the metallurgical recovery. The anionic flocculant did not improve the flotation performance. An adverse effect was a slight increase in the silica content of the concentrate. Flotation with polyacrylamides was influenced by the hydrodynamic conditions of the pulp, such as agitation and the weight percentage of solids in the flocculant conditioning and flotation stages.

The two most talked of questions in the mining industry today are rock dusting and mechanical loading. The one as a matter of safety, and the other as a matter of economy, and both are of vital interest to the mining fraternity. Rock dusting and other safety methods will be dealt with by others at this meeting, so I will confine my few remarks to the matter of mechanical loading. I will not attempt to tell you what mechanical loaders are doing in the different mining fields throughout the country, or what they should do, but will endeavor to give you an outline of the work being done with mechanical loaders in No. 4 Mine of the Union Pacific Coal Company, at Hanna, Wye. In order that you may better understand and be in a position to follow me it will be necessary to cite the conditions under which we are working. and the type of loaders in use. The seam pitches from 14 to 17 degrees, and is normally 32 feet in thickness, and is overlaid with a soft sandstone roof. The panel system of working is used, planes being driven on the pitch, and rooms driven on the strike. Owing to faults being encountered planes are driven between the faults, and the. rooms on either side are in some instances 800 to 1,000 feet in depth. Rooms are advanced eight feet in height, and 32 feet in width, by hand loaders and .Toy mechanical loaders, and when driven to the boundary,, 18 feet of the remaining 24 is loaded out with Thew electric shovels, and six feet left to protect the roof. In January, 1916 the company installed a Type 1 Thew shovel, equipped with a 1 1/4-yard dipper, and in July, 1917, they installed a Type 0 Thew electric shovel, equipped with a 1-yard dipper, and in the year 1918 two additional Type 0 Thew shovels, equipped with a 1-yard dipper, were installed, making a total of four Thew shovels for this mine. The introduction of these shovels caused the employees much concern, and like all departures from the old methods of mining, met with indifference by some and open antagonism by others, so that for some time they results obtained were not satisfactory. However, by constant supervision and changes in the method of haulage the results obtained at present, while not entirely satisfactory, are much better and the production and costs are reasonably good. The Thew shovels in use are mounted on traction wheels with swivel axle and move. in all directions by their own power, and while the weight of each is approxi¬mately 20 tons, they are not as cumbersome as. one would think and are easily operated. The system used in working these shovels is to shoot the coal clown ahead of the shovels and maintain two tracks, two cars being used on each track so that shovel is loading on one track while driver is, changing cars on the other. When place is finished the shovel is run back to the first cross-cut by its own power and lowered to the next room with block and tackle, the roof coal in cross-cut being shot down to a height of 16 feet to allow passage of the boom. With better results from the Thew shovels we soon realized that it was necessary to find some method of developing rooms faster than was being done with hand loaders in order to keep the Thew shovels in working places, and in November, 1923, the company purchased from the Joy Machine Company two Type 4 B U Joy loaders, and the installation of same met with the same indifference and antagonism from the employees as did the Thew

Fluid bed sulphation roasting of bismuth concentrates began at Warrego in 1980 in con- junction with the recommissioning of the Tennant Creek Smelter. This process, develop- ed by Peko Mines, is used to separate copper and bismuth by converting copper minerals to a water or weak acid soluble form and then leaching. Pilot scale testwork conducted at the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (AMDEL) and by Dorr Oliver Pty Ltd in the USA indicated that close control of bed teaper- atures and exhaust gas composition was required to ensure high levels of soluble copper. After overcoming some initial problems, the plant now achieves typically 89 percent copper extraction. Plant capacity is 2.7 tonnes/h by design but in practice this is limited by feed analysis, air requirements, cyclone operation and calcine particle size Consideration.
