Some basic considerations in the application of geostatistics to the valuation of ore in South African gold mines by D. G. KRIGE, Pr. Eng., D.Se. (Eng.) Rand (Fellow) There is much room for improvement in the statistical procedures that have been used by gold mines over the past decade in the valuation of their ore reserves. Improvement depends on the establishment of the extent to which the patterns of frequency distributions and the directional variograms for the gold values vary from area to area within each section of a mine. The application of the lognormal distribution and of the De Wijsian variogram model for routine ore-reserve valuations requires detailed study before some of the reservations still held by mathematical statisticians can be met. This paper provides some preliminary evidence of the extent to which these models can be used with confidence, as well as suggesting how they can be applied to their full potential.

"The Michipicoten-Goudreau area, bordering on the northeast corner of lake Suferior, has had a tectonic history related to that of the geosyncline occupied by this lake. This basin has been a major structural feature in the Canadian Shield since at least late-Precambrian time. It has been extensively faulted and was the centre of great igneous activity in the Keweenawan feriod . Many of the faults, folds, dykes, and sills in the surrounding regions tend to head directly or indirectly into this basin. Some of the faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area appear to run under the eastern part of lake Superior just as the large Keweenaw fault in Michigan extends into the lake on the south side. Some of these faults may even be extensions of or counterparts of the faults on the south side of the lake. Another set of faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area runs nearly transverse to some of these major faults, and it is evident that in some places movement has recurred at a later time on faults formed in an early period.STRATIGRAPHYThe rocks of this area, with the exception of Pleistocene and Recent formations, are all Precambrian:"

Surface water quality is determined by complicated interactions between water and land. Runoff--the flow of waters in surface streams and rivers-¬represents the total amount of water collected in a drainage basin or watershed that appears at the outlet of the basin. As the water flows through the basin, it is in contact with land and can pick up impurities from the land. Thus, surface waters are not pure--they contain impurities, or "pollutants," in vary¬ing concentrations determined by the nature of the land which they drain. The composition of surface waters thus tends to represent a steady state equilibrium between interactions of water and land. However, when man utilizes the land in the drainage basin or watershed, the natural equilibrium between water in the runoff and the land is disturbed. Such disturbances usually effect adverse changes in surface water quality, as new equilibrium conditions between land and water are established. These adverse changes in surface water quality can be thought of as "nonpoint pollution." Esti¬mation of nonpoint pollutant loads thus ultimately reduces to determining the magnitude of the differences between water qualities before and after man's disturbance of land within a watershed. The important key in making such an estimation lies in the determination of water quality in the natural or "back¬ground" condition of the watershed. In subsequent discussion in this paper, tools for making an estimation of background water quality will be described.

Rock is a heterogeneous medium, a fact often ignored during blast design. In reality, the rock mass characteristics have a controlling influence on the outcome of a blast. If the optimum blasting results are to be achieved over a range of rock mass conditions, it is prudent to understand the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing overbreak around the periphery of an excavation. The field work was performed in a drift located in a geologically dominant rock mass and also included observations and assessment of blast damage at several operating mines. The blast damage was estimated on the basis of the half cast factor. The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation, orientation , frequency and aperture of joints, number and thickness of layers and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage has been described.

KYANITE schists in the Sudbury area have been generally described by Haw,' who has also given particuLar information on preliminary treatment of three large samples from Dryden township, Ontario.' Kyanite, garnet, biotite, quartz, and feldspar comprise the main ingredients of this ore. Kyanite is the valuable mineral. About 5½ tons of —35 +200 mesh product, made by dry rod milling, screening, and separation on the Exolon magnetic separator, were available for treatment by flotation. Magnetic separation had effectively reduced garnet and biotite so that flotation feed consisted essentially of kyanite, quartz, and feldspar, the kyanite content averaging 32 pct and representing about 86 pct of the kyanite in the original ore. Earlier work on kyanite at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, s-c employed an acid circuit, but to avoid production difficulties in the use of acids and at the same time take advantage of the fact that industrial minerals respond somewhat to soap flotation, it was decided first to investigate the higher pH levels. Our shop started up in April of 1969, and during its 8th month of operation produced over 300,000 tons. Production continued to increase, and by January of 1970 tonnage rates significantly above 300,000 tons per month were being realized. Ours is a three vessel shop, producing 200 ton heats, with a normal grade breakdown indicating more than one half semi-killed carbon steel, with the balance distributed over rimmed and capped steel, alloy steel, killed carbon, and special killed drawing quality steel. The recent christening of a continuous billet caster has dictated that close to a quarter of our liquid steel be delivered to the caster.

Distal rhyolitic tephras from the Taupo Volcanic Zone are widespread in the Auckland urban region. Some are primary air fall or flow deposits but most are reworked. Their presence indicates potential hazard for the Auckland urban region from future eruptions of central North Island volcanoes and associated secondary effects. Geotechnical problems occur as a result of weathering of the tephras yielding sensitive materials.

"The Mac porphyry molybdenum prospect is located 100 km east of Smithers in central British Columbia. The identification of anomalous levels of molybdenum, copper, and silver in three adjacent lakes, sampled during a regional lake sediment survey, lead to the discovery of molybdenite mineralization in float. Subsequent magnetic and soil geochemistry surveys, together with prospecting and mapping, located the source of the float. Mineralization is hosted by a leucocratic granite stock of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Francois Lake Intrusions which has intruded Carboniferous and Permian Cache Creek Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The stock measures 500 m by 300m at surface and is mineralized throughout. Sulphide mineralogy is simple and consists of molybdenite with minor pyrite and local chalcopyrite. Molybdenite occurs within fractures and as selvages along quartz stockwork veins and is best developed near the margins of the stock.Known mineralization is coincident with distinct soil geochemistry and magnetic anomalies. Two additional areas of the property display similar features and these remain to be tested.IntroductionThe Mac property is situated in the Babine Lake area of central British Columbia on NTS map sheet 93K/13E, approximately 100 km east of the town of Smithers (Fig. 1). The property lies on the western margin of the Hogem Range at the northern tip of the Nechako Plateau. The centre of the claim block lies at 54°51 ' 30""N and 125 °34 '30""W.Topographically, the claims are characterized by gently rolling hills ranging in elevation from 900 m to 1500 m. Slopes are forested with tall conifers and underbrush is minimal. Flat-lying areas are swampy with tall grasses and scrub brush.Presently, the property is only accessible by helicopter from bases located in Smithers and Fort St. James. Recent road construction by the British Columbia Forest Service has brought road access from Burns Lake to within 5 km due south of the property. It is expected that in the near future, roads will be advanced into the claim area to facilitate logging of mature timber."

Research is being conducted toward making underground mining equipment autonomous. This will facilitate improvements in safety by relieving workers of dangerous tasks and will increase production by providing more accurate control with less down time.. A Bureau of Mines developed microcomputer network has enhanced this research by permitting a group of diverse computers to interact with a mining machine as well as with each other over a common data link. The network is composed of specially integrated off-the-shelf hardware and industry-standard operating system and programming languages. Using the network, researchers can conduct various experiments with the mining machine using a diverse group of intelligent sensors, computers, and microcontrollers. Descriptions of the mining machine, the mining machine control computer, control algorithms, -the microcomputer network architecture, and communication protocols are discussed.

THE iron and steel activities of this meeting opened on Monday morning with the steel melting session," with G. B. Waterhouse in the chair and A. L. Feild as vice-chairman. N. A. Zeigler's paper, on "Gases Extracted From Iron Carbon Alloys by Vacuum Melbing," created considerable interest and the discussion in general was most favorable. H. W. Gillett and Louis Jordan of the Bureau questioned the method of analysis for oxygen and C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., I , expressed their surprise at the large amount of oxygen with the high ,carbon alloys. Whether the gases found existed as gas in blowholes or as oxide inclusions was also a moot point. A paper by C. D. King, on "Basic Open-Hearth Yields," was an extremely interesting and valuable contribution. It was discussed by C. E.Kinney and A. L. Feild and numerous questions were asked throughout the presentation. Mr. King then presented a critical analysis of the losses together with novel methods of calculating them. A paper by C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., on "Unreduced Oxides in Pig Iron and Their Elimination in the Basic Open-Hearth Furnace," followed. The question of silicates and oxides in pig iron created much discussion, notably by Henry Hanson and W. J. MacKenzie, who gave figures on chipping cost as a function of blast-furnace practice.

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in gyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics, and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05-20 g/L (0.002-0.7 oz per gal) SO2. The effects of iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation, and pH on SO2 oxidation are also described.

Interest in the possibility of using Diesel6/ engines for haulage power in mining and tunneling is increasing in the United States, owing largely to the reported successful use of Diesel locomotives in European coal mines and to the comparatively recent development of automotive Diesel engines in this country. The extent of this interest has been evidenced to the Bureau of Mines by numerous requsts for information as to the factors that must be considered if Diesel engines are to be used safely underground.

For this paper, blending is conceived as a linear process that takes a proportion from one stockpile or location and mixes it with another proportion from another stockpile or location, with the aim of obtaining a set of attributes in the final combination that satisfies a given quality standard. A blending class is the combination of ore attributes and grade limits that should be stockpiled in order to achieve the target quality for the process Plant. Current literature considers the number of blending classes in the Open Pit Scheduling Problem as fixed; however, this paper shows how to define specific blending classes for a given deposit so that the schedule can be solved with Sequential Linear Programming. Finally, a practical application in a Peruvian copper mine is shown, involving four ore attributes: alteration code, arsenic, oxide content and copper grade. INTRODUCTION In copper ore deposits, blending for quality has not been a typical issue as it was for coal and iron ore; however, current copper deposits in the world are becoming geologically and chemically more complex than in the past and is not uncommon to have quality standards involving up to four attributes, introducing an additional complexity to the mine scheduling process [1]. In order to solve the Open Pit Scheduling Problem with multiple ore quality constraints, two assumptions are necessary [2]: - Grade constraints are defined only by specifying an upper and lower limit; - Ore attributes in stockpiles are pre-determined, i.e., the upper and/or lower grade limits defining each stockpile are already known at the time of setting the schedule. Assuming each ore attribute is classified as high, medium or low, and there are four attributes to be controlled in the target ore quality, the number of possible blending classes would be 3^4 = 81. This number is impractical to manage in Operations, and increases the complexity at the time of running the schedule; therefore, a more efficient way of classifying ore is required. Note that in practice, one blending class can be split into more than one stockpile location due to physical capacity constraints. Therefore, the number of stockpiles could even be more than 81. BLENDING CLASSES DETERMINATION For a given set of ore grades with lower and upper limits to be achieved, one has to find all feasible ore classes such that when blended, their grades will lie within those limits.

The sinking and lining of a large mine shaft with 8.0 m i.d. and 1,133 m total depth is described in detail. The ground freezing method was applied to safely sink the shaft through unstable, waterbearing strata. Following a brief introduction to the geological and hydrological conditions and the owner's shaft requirements, is the general technical concept to sink and line the shaft. Particular emphasis is put on the lining system which has to provide stability and absolute watertightness for the lifetime of the shaft, even though mining takes place in its immediate proximity. Machinery and equipment used to execute the work are mentioned and commented. Furthermore, the excavation and lining of the large filling stations using rock anchors and shotcrete are described. Details on performance rates are given.

As opposed to graphics applications in medical sciences and mechanical engineering, computer imaging of the subsurface faces a severe problem of data shortage. Most graphics softwares include an interpolation algorithm aimed at producing slick graphic output, irrespective of the attribute being interpolated, the quantity and quality of the data available, and what the map is intended for. It is suggested that the power of modern computers be also used in providing representations of the subsurface that accurately reflect actual spatial variability and the large variety of soft information available beyond hard data. Since any subsurface representation is uncertain, a measure of that uncertainty should be provided which can be used for risk analysis.

These are exciting times for the coal mining community. Although the industry is in the middle of a healthy boom, there are strong forces tending to counteract or at least temper the rate of growth. There are many pushing and pulling factors of interest to mining people, and a few salient ones will be mentioned here. Primarily because of a tremendous demand for energy, a demand that can't be met by other fuels, the coal industry is in boomsville. Another contributing factor to this situation is the increased overseas demand for metallurgical coal. These demands are being counteracted by a lack of people, the lead-time required to develop new capacity and wildcat strikes, among other things.

I~JTI HE work on the indium-zirconium system is part A of a larger investigation of zirconium-phase diagrams with solute elements, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony, which is intended to provide information about the metallic valency of zirconium. The system is an ideal example since the sizes of indium and zirconium atoms are nearly the same, and the solute and the solvent occur in the same row of the periodic table. The only solute from Group III B which had previously been added to zirconium was aluminum' and it was of interest to determine whether indium would dissolve appreciably in alpha zirconium and stabilize this phase in the same manner. Experimental Procedure The experimental methods used in the indium-zirconium work are similar to those described earlier for the silver-zirconium system.' Reactor Grade 1 iodide zirconium of 99.95 pct purity* and indium of 99.99 pct purity were arc cast, and then annealed in silica capsules with protective foils of zirconium and molybdenum. Annealing temperatures and times varied from 1 day at 1300°C to 43 days at 550°C. The compositions of the alloys were detcrmined by an individual chemical analysis of the actual metallographic specimens after two or more sides were examined to insure the absence of solute segregation. Calibrated thermocouples were used throughout, and the uncertainty in the temperatures reported, owing to calibration error, furnace control, and measurement of the small temperature gradients near the capsules, is believed to be well within ±2°C. Typical impurities in the alloys were found by a neutron-activation analysis of four different alloys. The results are given in Table I where the ranges of values will be seen to compare favorably with the usual values for iodide zirconium. With respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon the absence of any unusual amount of these elements compared to iodide zirconium was indicated by the alloy hardness values, since hardness is increased sharply by the presence of these elements. The value for 0 pct In, obtained from the alloys by extrapolation, is 58 2 7 VPN which is in the low part3 f the normal range of hardness found in iodide zirconium. Correlations between mass spectra and molecular structures of 186 organic sulfur compounds are discussed. The olefinic ions, the alkyl ions, the CnE2n+1 ions, the m/e 61 ions, and the m/e 35 ions in the spectra of thiols are related to molecular structure. In the spectra of sulfides, the olefinic ions, the m/e 61 ions, the m/e 35 ions, the CnH2n+1S+ ions, and the CnH2n+1SH+ ions are correlated with molecular structure. For disu1fides, the correlations relate HSSF+& and RSSH+ ions to molecular structure. Base peaks of alkylthiophenes are correlated to their molecular structures. Some unimolecular reactions of sulfur compounds in the mass spectrometer are considered. A cyclic intermediate is suggested for the reaction which produces m/e 47, CH3S+, and m/e 48, CH4S+, ions in the spectra of sulfides. An expanded ring is suggested as a possible intermediate in the reactions of thiophenes. Heats of formation of sulfur-containing ions and their appearance potentials are presented in tabular form. Ionization potentials for sulfur-containing radicals and molecules are also given. Discussion of the spectra, tabulated in the appendixes, provides an insight into the relationship of the molecular structure of a compound to the mass-to-charge ratios and the intensities of the ions in its mass spectrum. Correlations of the mass spectra with molecular structures are empirically developed by observing regularities in the spectra of the reference compounds. Correlations extend the usefulness of mass spectra because they can be employed to determine the molecular structure of an unknown compound.

(con~munication to the Secretary*):—It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental r6le played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four pheilomena of (1) excessive chlo-ridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals; (3) the presence of man-gancse oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is sbown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in arid or desert regions only; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much less soluble.
