Certain choices for the shear elements of the inhomogeneous distortion in the phenomenological theory of martensite formation are examined for their agreement with crystallographic and X-ray data of iron alloys. The assumption that the shear elements must represent slip or twinning systems characteristic of bcc metals is found to covey all observations, even when a small uniform dilatation is taken into consideration. In bct martensite, (011) becomes a possible twinning or faulting plane, in addition to {112), and qualitatively similar X-ray line broadening is to be expected from both. The basic concept inherent in the current theoriesl-4 of the formation of martensite is that the interface between the parent (austenitic) and product (martensitic) phase is an invariant strain plane (i.e., one that is undistorted and unrotated). Experimental evidence that the interface is of such a nature is available in certain transformations2'5'6 but for the transformation in iron alloys direct observation has not proved enlightening. Internal strains resulting from the formation of the small martensite platelets within the parent austenite matrix7 make it difficult to produce the desired evidence. Indirect evidence, however, such as the continuity of scratches in passing from untrans-formed to a transformed region, strongly indicates that the habit plane in iron alloys is an invariant strain interface. The scatter in habit planes in a given specimen8 would suggest that internal stresses have a slight but definite influence. On the other hand, composition changes which affect the lattice parameter can alter the habit plane appreciably, and by an amount greater than the scatter.' The success of the theories depends on the choice made for the "inhomogeneous distortion" or "complementary shear'' in the analysis and also on the choice for the parameter 6 representing a small uniform dilatation. In the approach developed by Wechsler, Lieberman, and Read'," it is implicitly assumed that 6 is unity. In the case of iron alloys, all observations cannot be explained without varying either the inhomogeneous distortion or 6 . Bowles and Mackenzie3 considered only the effect of varying d. They found it difficult to reconcile the wide scatter of habit planes with the theory and were forced to the conclusion that it may also be necessary to consider variations or different choices of the inhomogeneous distortion. Wechsler and Read" considered a limited number of possible choices for the inhomogeneous distortion, but no variation in 6, though this could easily have been introduced if so desired. "TiO2 has been loaded on cordierite porous ceramic to prepare the SCR catalyst carrier by using both APCVD and sol-gel technology. In APCVD method, TiC14 and O 2 were used as reaction precursor. TiC14 was gasified by using N2 as carrier gas which was controlled to 500sccm. Its reaction temperature and reaction time were limited to 773K and 30min respectively. The physical properties, SEM and SEM-EDX of the TiO2-cordierite carrier and the properties of SCR catalysts prepared by these carriers have been tested. The tests showed that TiO2 loaded by APCVD method were of graininess shape and even accumulation. The loading rate of TiO2 and the specific area of carrier sample were increased 114% and 21 % respectively comparing with sol-gel technology. In the result of sol-gel method, the maximal difference of Ti content was 66.92%, while the result of APCVD method was 18.89%. It demonstrated that TiO2 was uniformly attached with the cordierite ceramic by using APCVD method, which would ensure more active ingredients well loaded on the Ti02-cordierite carrier. This difference made the denitrification ratio of catalyst prepared by APCVD method was 8.1 % higher than that of catalyst prepared by sol-gel method.IntroductionIn recent years, the emission of NOx, which were caused by coal-fired power plants, has gotten more and more attention. SCR (selective catalytic reduction) is the most effective technology to DeNOx [ll. The core technology of it is the catalyst. The SCR catalyst usually uses Ti02 as the carrier, and V2O 5 as the active component [2, 3] . However, the thermal stability and mechanical properties of TiO2 carrier are unstable, which would influence the performances of the catalyst. The commercial catalyst generally uses WO3 or MoO3 to promote its heat stability at present [4-7] Besides, TiO2 is expensive. Compared with TiO2, the cordierite is of good thermal stability and lower price. So loading Ti02 on cordierite porous ceramic as carrier to produce SCR catalyst is of good prospects [S, 91 • Currently, TiO2 is usually loaded on cordierite by the sol-gel method. But some research has shown that the sol-gel method easily reduced the loading performances of TiO2, such as distribution, combination, etc. APCVD (atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition) has many advantages to preparing TiO2 films, such as high bonding strength, fast reaction rate and so on [l0-13l_ In this paper, TiO2 has been loaded on cordierite porous ceramic to prepare the SCR catalyst carrier by using both APCVD and sol-gel methods. The properties of the carriers prepared by the two processes have also been compared."

THE Ducktown district is in the extreme southeastern corner of Tennessee, its principal railroad point being Copperhill, on the Blue Ridge division of the Louisville &Nashville Railroad, midway between Knoxville, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga. The ore deposits were discovered about 1849 and development work was begun in the early fifties. Only the "black copper? ores, products of secondary enrichment, from beneath the gossan outcrops and overlying the massive sulphide deposits, were then mined and smelted for their copper content. Upon their exhaustion, attention was directed to the treatment of the pyritic ore remaining, resulting in the devising of a, process consisting of open-heap roasting, followed by blast-furnace smelting, which was practised until 1903, when semi-pyritic smelting was-adopted. In 1908, the companies operating in the district; on account of litigation brought about by alleged smoke damage to forests and vegetation in the adjoining counties of Georgia, were compelled to erect enormous acid plants to prevent the escape of the sulphur dioxide produced in the smelting operations. The utilization of this sulphur dioxide in the, manufacture of sulphuric acid as a byproduct has added to the revenues of the companies, and at the same time has furnished a valuable source of supply of sulphuric acid to the fertilizer trade of the South, and more recently to the manufacturers of explosives for use in the production of war munitions. The steadily increasing demand for sulphuric acid for the manufacture of fertilizers and explosives, together with the decreasing imports of pyrites, from which the acid is generally produced, now makes it imperative that greatly extended resources of pyrite be developed. While the Ducktown deposits do not predominate in pyrite, they do contain an inexhaustible supply of pyrrhotite, admixed with pyrite, which can be satisfactorily employed to supplement or substitute for pyrite in acid making.

SINCE 1023, which closed the speculative era in the bituminous coal fields of the United States, there have been wide annual fluctuations in the national production of bituminous coal. These changes in annual output have been variously attributed to: (I) increased competition from petroleum products, natural gas and hydroelectric power; (2) lower unit consumption of coal; and (3) fluctuations in the general business level. The purpose of this paper is to measure, from a practical standpoint, the net effect upon the annual trend of bituminous coal production, and to give those who are interested a basis for estimating in advance the probable output of bituminous coal. It can readily be shown that changes in the level of general business affect the national production of bituminous coal more than does any other factor. Therefore it is necessary to use some standard measure of the relative business level for purposes of comparison. The Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production offers the basis for such a measure.' This Index, a weighted composite of 81 different series, rests upon the averages of the years 1935 to 1939 as loo, and is presented graphically in Fig. I. Even a cursory examination of the chart will indicate a definite uptrend for industrial production over a period of years. This uptrend is due to at least two factors: (I) an actual increase in national population, and (2) a probable increase in the per capita consumption of goods. This means that there is no such thing as a fixed Normal, rather Normal is a variable, tending to increase from year to year. In order to measure the amount of annual increase in normal, the Index of Industrial Production must be studied in relation to its major components, Durable Goods and Nondurable Goods. Durable Goods are those made from the lasting materials such as iron, steel, other metals, lumber, stone, cement, clay, glass. Nondurable Goods are those for early consumption, such as foods, textiles, tobacco, chemicals, paper, gasoline, and goods made of leather and rubber. The purchase of Durable Goods may be postponed, but Nondurable Goods must be purchased currently unless the standard of living is lowered. The Federal Reserve Indexes of durable and nondurable goods are shown graphically, 1920 to 1939, on Fig. 2 (pp. 764-765 of ref. I). It is apparent that fluctuations in the production of nondurable goods are not nearly so wide as in the production of durable goods, and that the curve of Industrial Production (Fig. I) would fall between the two curves on Fig. 2. The new Onahama N0.3 tankhouse was put into operation early in 1973. This new tankhouse, which has a capacity of 90,000 metric ton cathode per year, is distinct in many important respects from conventional tankhouses. The major objectives in design were to simplify the construction and ope- ration for reduction of the costs for labor, interest and depreciation and also to reduce the copper inventory in the tankhouse by the use of conti- nuously-cast anodes. As a result, the investment cost was decreased by approximately 30% and the inventory cost by approximately 600, while the production per unit area of the tankhouse was increased by 80 - 100% as compared with the existing conventional-type tankhouses at Onahama. By abolition of cell inspection and maximum mechanization of materials handling the labor cost was decreased by as much as 80%. On the other hand, the new system has some disadvantages, such as increase in anode scrap ratio and increased cost of anode casting. The No.3 tankhouse system is, however, still at its starting point, while conventional methods have been continuously improved over the past years of operation. It is expected that the innovational ideas behind this system will serve as bases for a more efficient electrolytic refining system in future.

"The maintenance strategies in the mining industry are changing from operative and periodic inspection strategies to a condition-based, predictive maintenance strategy centred in vibration analysis plus complementary techniques. Condition monitoring can also help to improve availability by being able to pinpoint and diagnose problems on operating machinery at an early stage. This reduces unscheduled downtime and production losses.However, in mining, for shovels operating in transient modes, with variable load and/or speed, the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) standard approach is not directly applicable for analysis. This work illustrates how spectral order analysis and new transforms, called time-frequency transforms (TFT), allow us to monitor the shovel when it is working. Some practical examples showing the application of these analysis techniques to occasional vibrations measured on hoist and crowd transmission of a shovel are also presented. It is shown that at present, it is possible to carry out the vibration monitoring in the mining shovel while it is working, therefore avoiding the high cost of a loss of production which can occurr in traditional monitoring, where the measurement is taken while the shovel is out of production."

The lack of an iron-smelting industry in the Pacific Northwest places the ferrous metals industries under an economic handicap. No iron-smelting enterprises, now dormant, had been operated successfully. Iron made at both of hoes installations proved to be satisfactory for normal pig-iron uses. Electric power and reductants acre available in the area. Power from the dames now completed and. those being constructed insures present and future needs for basic industries. Subbituminous coal, close to the main supply of iron ore, insures ample reluctant for all smelting requirements.

THE large difference in the X-ray scattering factors for molybdenum and manganese makes the o- phase in the Mn-Mo system an interesting one to study with respect to ordering of the atoms. Such a study has been carried out using data obtained from a powder sample, and the resulting evidence for ordering in this compound is presented here. It is not possible, of course, to obtain all the details of structure for a u phase from powder data only. Most difficult of all would be the determination of precise atomic parameters. There is reason to believe, however, that the atomic parameters do not vary greatly in the different s'S and that the precise values obtained from one s structure would then allow decisions as to the ordering of atoms to be made when there is a large difference in scattering factors. In particular, the powder intensities for Mn-Mo s are for the most part in good agreement with those observed for Co-Cr, for which single crystal studies have been made by the authors.' There are a few marked discrepancies in the intensity comparison of the two s's, and these cannot be removed by adjustment of the parameters. They are interpreted as resulting from a more pronounced effect of ordering of the atoms. Accordingly, the parameters of Co-Cr s' have been used for the calculations of the Mn-Mo intensities. For Co-Cr, the space group is D4h14-P4/mnm with atoms in the following positions: 1—2 in (b); 11—4 in (f), with x=0.1031; 111—8 in (i), with x= 0.3713 and y=0.0370; IV—8 in (i), with x=0.5662 and y=0.2396; and V—8 in (j), with x=0.3160Y and y — -0.250. The unit cell is tetragonal, with an==9.10A and cn=4.74A for the Mn-Mo u phase studied here.

Gold occurrences have been known in the La Ronge Domain for many year . Mineable reserves have more recently been outlined and there is every prospect of a major gold camp being established in the domain within this decade. The La Ronge Domain lies in the Lower Proterozoic 'Trans-Hudson Orogen' and is part of a collage of Early Proterozoic crust comprising volcanoplutonic arcs, batholiths, associated volcaniclastics and volcanogenic sediments lying between the Superior Craton to the outheast and the reworked Archean basement/Aphebian cover terrain to the northwest. The domain has several lithostructural subdivisions, the most important of whjch , from a gold exploration point of view, is the Central Metavolcanic Belt. This belt is composed dominantly of a range of metavolcanic rocks and gabbroic to granitic intrusives, which geochemically resemble younger subduction-generated 'primitive' arcs developed on oceanic crust. U-Pb zircon geochronology indicates that the arc volcarusm and pre- to late-kjnematic plutonism occurred about 1890 Ma to 1850 Ma ago. The belt has an attained grade of upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and is relatively undeformed , though high strain zones occur locally. Most gold occurrences in the La Ronge Domain have been found in the Star-Waddy Lakes area of the Central Metavolcanic Belt, and in the Sulprude-MacKay Lakes area to the south which is interpreted as a tectonically dismembered part of the main belt. Both tratiformand vein-type gold occurrences are present in the domain; vein-type predominate and form nearly 90 per cent of the occurrences. The stratiform-type occurrences show a regional lithological a sociation with iron-rich sediments within proximal felsic volcanjc sequences. Some vein-type occurrences appear related to brittle fracturing associated with intrusive emplacement (the magmatic-hydrothermal "syn:' and "subvolcanic" veins) and faulting. However, most of the vein-type occurrences exhibit a spatial association with regionalscale ductile shear and other high strain zones, and were probably formed by metamorphichydrothermal processes.

A large casino complex in Cherokee, North Carolina recently underwent a $633 million expansion that involved substantial foundation challenges. The site is located in a valley on the southern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where subsurface conditions typically consist of varying thicknesses of fill overlying alluvium, residuum, partially weathered rock and rock. The fill and alluvium contain cobbles and boulders as large as several feet in diameter. The residuum and partially weathered rock are very thick in some areas, and the depth at which consistently high quality rock is encountered is highly variable. To reduce the foundation costs for the expansion, continuous flight auger (CFA) piles were proposed in lieu of micropiles. CFA piles are not generally used in this geologic environment and concerns regarding their selection included: (1) an uncertainty that CFA piles could be successfully constructed given the difficult conditions and (2) a lack of regional data regarding unit resistance values and load transfer characteristics. To address these concerns, a design-phase test program was undertaken to evaluate pile constructability, develop an understanding of the load transfer behavior, and establish the required pile lengths. The program included soil test borings, shear wave velocity measurements, timed auger probes, instrumented pile load tests and observation of exhumed piles. It was demonstrated that CFA piles could be advanced through the fill, cobble/boulder-laden alluvium, residuum and into the partially weathered rock, albeit with some limitations. Under axial loading, the pile response was very stiff and relatively high unit resistance values were measured. Pile instrumentation allowed for the evaluation and use of design pile lengths shorter than that tested, and the overall reduction in pile lengths yielded a 40 percent reduction in foundation cost. In general, CFA piles were determined to be a suitable, economical foundation alternative.

"Molten aluminum is routinely transported hundreds of miles to customers in large ""over-the-road"" crucibles. This is especially common for aluminum recycling organizations handling scrap and by-products. Receiving the aluminum in a molten form can save the customer time and money since in-house melting costs and capital equipment can be avoided. Additionally, the alloy can be on specification and nearly ready to use for the casting operation.A number of transport crucible designs are currently in use. The specifics of each design are based on the needs of the customer, the equipment used at both the producer and the consumer, and over-the-road transportation constraints. Crucibles are designed to maximize carrying capacity, and refractory life while minimizing heat flow and dead weight. These conflicting demands place difficult design criteria on the design engineer.This paper will review the basic advantages and disadvantages associated with molten metal transport, give examples of the design restrictions and examine several types design of crucibles currently in use."

This contribution presents an introduction into that part of the field of elastic wave propagation which is relevant to blasting of boreholes and addresses briefly borehole breakdown and the formation of the fracture network around a borehole which ultimately leads to the disintegration of the rock mass. Phenomena of this kind are encountered in mining and quarrying. Numerical as well as experimental work referring to stress wave expansion from a detonating borehole is addressed.

"Trolley lines used in connection with electric haulage in mines are a source of danger and many lives have been lost by men accidentally coming in contact with the wires. Usually the wires in metal mines are sufficiently guarded to prevent men from touching them with their person or by pieces of steel which they may be carrying or their shoulders, while walking along the level. However, it is difficult to guard effectively the wires at loading chutes along the haulage ways and in spite of safe guards, chute tappers have been electrocuted through loading bars accidentally touching the trolley line.To overcome this danger the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., at Lowell, Arizona formely used a hinged V-shaped trough made of 1-inch by 6-inch lumber, that was dropped over the wire in front of the chute, when the cars were being loaded. This arrangement interfered with the easy operation of the chute, and a cut-out device for the trolley line was devised by W. R. Gibson, chief electrician for the company. This cut-out is efficient easily constructed and roes not interfere with the operations at the chutes or with the motors operating on the same level.When the cut-out is open the electric current is carried past the gap by an insulated wire on the opposite side of the drift. A hinged board drops down over the ends of the trolley guard when the slide is open and Prevents anything touching the live wires. About ninety of these cut-outs are now in use in the mine,The levels under the scopes are timbered with drift sets placed 5 feet apart, and the loading chutes take up the space between two sets. All trolley wires in. the company's mines are carried 6 feet above the rails and guarded by two 1/2 by 6-inch boards placed on either side of the wire."

A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB's Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine's overall computerized mine planning system.

A case study based on two recoverable resource modelling techniques (indirect and direct or localised methods) have been derived using typical feasibility study or new mine drilling data configurations from the extensions of an existing mine’s massive production database. The database is from the Gold Fields Tarkwa Gold mine (~6Moz Mineral Reserves and 13-year Life-of mine). The corresponding recoverable resources from the various techniques are then analysed using the open pit Whittle optimisation process. The results were then compared based on the Whittle optimisation results to determine the efficiencies of the approaches and the validity of the recoverable mineral resource estimates for mine planning and financial forecasts (including Cash Flows etc). Based on historical production metal recovery, the paper also assesses the corresponding orebody and mine planning as well as financial risks with regards to the modelling techniques. The study shows that the localized direct and somewhat more straight forward approach if applied efficiently can provide an equally useful tool for computing recoverable resources for mine planning and financial forecasts, as compared to the indirect approach as presently in use.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a study of the explosibility of various metals and other elemental dusts dispersed in air, with a focus on the experimental explosion temperatures. The data are useful for understanding the basics of dust cloud combustion, as well as for evaluating the explosion hazards in the minerals and metals processing industries. The dusts studied included boron, carbon, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, titanium, chromium, iron, nickel, copper, zinc, niobium, molybdenum, tin, hafhium, tantalum, tungsten, and lead. The dusts were chosen to cover a wide range of physical properties - from the more volatile materials such as magnesium, aluminum, sulfur, and zinc to the highly "refractory" (very low volatility) elements such as carbon, niobium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten. These flammability studies were conducted in a 20-L chamber, using strong pyrotechc ignitors. The experimental data obtained included the minimum explosible concentrations, maximum explosion pressures, and maximum explosion temperatures. A unique multiwavelength infrared pyrometer was used to measure the temperatures. For the elemental dusts studied, all ignited and burned as air-dispersed dust clouds except for nickel, copper, molybdenum, and lead. The measured maximum explosion temperatures ranged from -1 550 K for tin and tungsten powders to -2800 K for aluminum, magnesium, and titanium powders. The measured temperatures are compared to the calculated, adiabatic flame temperatures. In general, the dusts whose experimental temperatures were closer to the adiabatic values were those with the finer particle sizes, those that were more easily vaporized, and/or those that were intrinsically more reactive.

THE nature of a collector-coated mineral surface has been the subject of some experimentation and much speculation. Various aspects of the problem have been isolated and studied; it is probable, however, that there exist aspects as yet unrecognized, which are needed for a complete description of the system. The recognized elements of the problem are: 1—The nature of the chemical units comprising the film and the nature of the forces holding these chemical units to the mineral surface; 2—The orientation of the chemical units at the surface; and 3—The disposition of the collector units at the mineral surface. This report touches upon all three aspects of the broad problem; it deals, however, with a new and heretofore unrecognized element—the mobility of the collector units in the two dimensions of the solid-liquid interface. Regardless of the viewpoint adopted as to whether the chemical units comprising the collector film are collector ions or molecules, held either by chemical or physical forces, the writers on flotation theory are in apparent agreement as to the orientation of the chemical units at the mineral surface. Wark and Cox' showed that the contact angle at a stable collector-coated surface in a constant chemical environment is independent of the nature of the mineral and of any resurfacing agent; it depends solely upon the collector used. They showed further that the value of the contact angle increases with the number of carbon atoms in a homologous series of compounds. Taggart, Taylor, and Knoll2 postulated that the collector ion is oriented with the chemically reactive, polar end toward the mineral surface and the non-polar, hydrocarbon-like end toward the liquid phase. In support thereof they cited the abstraction of p-p1 dihydroxydiphenylthiourea and of glycol xanthate8 by galena without a concomitant increase in the contact angle above that of clean galena. It was argued that in these cases the water-repellent layer which normally would be presented to the liquid phase owing to the orientation of the collector ions is overlain by a layer of water-avid groups, the hydroxyl groups. Implicit is the analogous orientation exhibited by a monomolecular layer of an insoluble substance at an air-water interface. It should be pointed out that these facts also are consistent with the concept that the collector units be flat on the surface of the mineral and that the response of the surface to an air bubble is determined by the ratio of the area covered by water-avid groups to the area covered by water-repellent groups; the areas being weighted according to the relative watef-avidity or water-repellency of the groups involved. The disposition of the chemical units of the collector film at the mineral surface has not received the attention it merits. Taggart4 concluded from the observed stoichiometry of the ions entering and leaving a surface that the stoichiometry is obeyed in detail at the surface of the mineral. Thus, in the case of xanthate-coated galena, pairs of xanthate ions are attached to surface lead ions. In the case of chemisorption, Gaudin and Preller postulated an agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum (the mineral surface) with those of the superstratum (collector film); in the case of the physical adsorption their position is not clear. In one place they state "the first type (physical adsorption) does not require any agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum with that of the superstratum" and in another place that "It seems, in fact, as though some slight influence of the substratum is formed even in physical adsorption." The present work shows that in some cases of chemisorption the chemical units of the collector film are in constant surface-bound motion and may not be assigned to any site of the surface, hence there is no permanent association between the chemical units of the film and the atoms or ions of the solid. The physical property of the collector film that is of paramount importance is its surface energy. Although this property is not susceptible to direct experimental determination, the related contact angle is. Much of the knowledge of the properties of a collector film derives (by deductive and inductive reasoning) from the behavior of an air bubble thereat
