There is a considerable amount of lignite reserve in the form of thick seams in Turkey. It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behaviour is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient production, especially when top coal winning by means of caving behind the face is applied. A comprehensive modelling of deformations and induced stresses is vital for the selection of optimum production strategy. In this study, numerical modelling and analysis of a longwall panel at Omerler underground coalmine have been carried out by using the software called FLAC3D developed based on the finite difference technique. Firstly, a 3-D numerical model of the M3 panel has been prepared. Secondly, induced stresses formed around the longwall face have been determined as a function of face advance where the face was located at the bottom of thick coal-seam. Results obtained from modelling studies have revealed that the front abutment vertical stress was maximum at 7 metres in front of the face and magnitude of front abutment stress was found to increase up to a distance of 200 metres away from the face start line. As the face was further advanced after 200 m from the face start line, there was not any significant change in the characteristics of front abutment stresses. Results of numerical analysis of the panel were in good agreement with in situ observations.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s annual conference and expo, MINEXCHANGE 2026, will take place Feb. 22–25, 2026, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The event will foster a hub for innovation, technical exchange and policy discussion for the global mining industry. Over four days, attendees will take part in short courses, technical sessions, field trips and networking events that highlight the advancement of the mining industry. The conference’s keynote session, titled “Regaining America’s Mineral Dominance,” will start at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 in the Grand Ballroom E–J. The speaker will address the sweeping policy actions now shaping the nation’s mineral future, following a series of executive orders issued by the Trump administration designed to bolster domestic mineral production and energy security. These directives, including Immediate Measures to Increase Domestic Mineral Production (EO 14241) and Establishing the National Energy Dominance Council (EO 14213), have set in motion a coordinated effort across the Departments of Interior, Energy, Defense and Commerce to enhance the United States’ position as a global leader in critical minerals. The invited speakers include Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox and Nate Foster, managing director of Rio Tinto Kennecott, who will examine how policy and industry are converging to meet surging demand for minerals essential to modern technology. Governor Cox is expected to highlight Utah’s long-standing role in American mining, from the early development of Kennecott Copper to its current position as a producer of 40 of the nation’s 50 identified critical minerals. Foster, meanwhile, will offer insights into Rio Tinto’s extensive operations in Utah, including the Kennecott Copper Mine — one of only two operating copper smelters in the United States — and the company’s ongoing efforts to build more resilient, sustainable supply chains. Rio Tinto’s work in critical mineral production, from copper and tellurium in Utah to new operations in Arizona, has made it a fundamental figure in the U.S. mineral economy. Projects such as the Resolution Copper development and the revival of Gunnison Copper using Rio Tinto’s innovative Nuton technology illustrate how private-sector leadership is driving sustainability in domestic mining. These advancements come at a critical moment for the industry, as copper prices remain near historic highs. The keynote session will emphasize that meeting future mineral demand will require a concerted effort between government, industry and technology partners to secure responsible, domestic production. "Mining processing plants are the most high-performing industrial enterprises in the world economy system. Even at an average-scale mining enterprise, the grain-size separation equipment continuously processes 105 to 106 dissimilar mineral particles per hour. In separation by physical properties, their number increases by at least 10 to 50 times. Mathematical modeling of such a high flow of discrete particles is carried out using two different approaches: the discrete-particle and the phenomenological methods. The calculations demonstrate the possibility of handling big data when describing the processes of separation of granular material. INTRODUCTION The interest to the screening process and the process of formation of new screen designs in Mekhanobr is traditional since the moment of its foundation. It is symbolical that the first publication of the Mekhanobr proceedings in 1924 was the monograph dedicated to screens and screening products as such, which was the first one in the world at that moment. It was a book of Prof. L. B. Levenson, one of the founders of Mekhanobr, who headed the Technical Bureau of the Institute. Vibratory screening is the most mass process in the technologies of solid minerals processing, which determines significantly the energy demands of crushing and grinding cycles, and at some enterprises determines the quality of the final product, for example in case of crushed stone, coal or abrasive materials production. The general understanding and simulation of the process of poly-dispersed granular materials vibratory screening was developed at several conceptual levels taking into account the features of classification of materials with different size and density.Considering the real industrial processes of vibration screening, it shall be noted that at the sieve surface of the screen in the initial part of the deck the classification in a thick material layer (in natural conditions) occurs, which further transfers to a thin layer (free movement). In the process of screening of light minerals, for example coal or metallurgic feedstock, screening is mainly performed in the thick layer."

Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.

I read your paper in the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with great interest, and must compliment you on its brilliance. Annandalet I have studied your paper in some detail, and am of the opinion that it makes an important contribution to the topic of the development of technological manpower, which is currently being debated in South Africa at al levels. REPORTS from smelters show that all were so occupied with the in- creased production called for during the first half of the year that little time was devoted to metallurgical developments. Improvements which have been made such as gas-firing and other alterations ill the reconstructed Hayden smelter, will require time for reporting. The labor situation at all plants held the most prominent place and put all other problems in the background. Coming events of considerable importance concerti the construction of two new smelters. The Chino unit of Nevada Consolidated which has long had its concentrate smelted at the El Paso plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. is constructing its own smelter at the property in New Mexico. The newest Phelps Dodge development of the Clay ore body at Morenci, Ariz., will call for another new smelter.

In 1874 a stockman, JE Wright of Foxlow Station, recognised copper mineralisation when he was about 12 kilometres south of the station. The find was on the banks of the Molonglo River. Several small mines were soon operating along the ridge above the river, and the village of Captain's Flat was established.One mining company established in the 1880s was Lake George Mines. It's name was to remain synonomous with the name of the town until mining and treatment ceased on 11 March 1962.

Underground or In-situ Coal Gasification (UCG or UICG), though not a new concept, is now attracting considerable global attention as a viable process to provide a "clean" and economic fuel from coal. Applying improved UICG technology to gasify deep, thin, and low-grade coal seams could vastly increase the amount of exploitable reserves. However, it is imperative that further development of this technology is based on integrating UCG practices and potential environmental impacts with accepted sustainability frameworks and processes. This paper evaluates the potential of UCG to conform to frameworks such as MMSD (Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development), Natural Step and Green Engineering, in order to define its "sustainable" potential. The paper also discusses the potential contributions of UCG to sustainability during its design, operation, closure, and post-closure phases.

Mining mobile equipment is becoming larger in order to lower operation cost and increase productivity; however, their performance characteristics are often limited by the tire capabilities. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of tire research, the lack of comprehensive knowledge on tire performance characteristics impedes the advancement of off-the-road tires. Longer haul roads, and a severe operating environment make tires more vulnerable than other components of a vehicle. Furthermore, due to a limited availability of large tires, mines are facing shortages. Thus mines and tire service companies are keen to improve tire performance, extend tire life and hence lower operating costs. This paper reviews the relevant tire performance research, analyzes tire interactions with the surrounding environment, tire maintenance practices and operational issues using a case study based on data collected during an ongoing project with Fountain Tire.

The Mt Lyell Mine, situated in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania, has a production history of more than 100 years. Previous mining activities have resulted in substantial modifications to environmental conditions at Mt Lyell and disposal of sulphidic waste rock across the lease has left a legacy of on-going environmental impacts including acid drainage (AD). In 1995 Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) was granted a mining lease Irons the Tasmanian State Government for redevelopment of Mt Lyell and indemnity from actions concerning pollution from previous occupation and use of leased land. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Mt Lyell redevelopment committed CMT to be responsible for waste rock dumps generated from their activities and to ensure that management is in-line with best practice environmental management principles. CMT commenced commercial production in December 1995 with sulphidic material from development of the underground Prince Lyell mine reporting to a single waste rock dump constructed according to a management plan developed in July 1995 and superseded by a management plan for extension in May 1997. The CMT waste rock dump currently has a total capacity of 220 000 m- and approximately 120 000 m3 of rock have been placed to-date. Material reporting to the dump is placed in a densely compacted state to a controlled surface profile. The dump is clay capped and a final revegetated soil layer placed on top. A rock pitched drain extends down to a wetland area in order to remove stormwater and minimise possible soil erosion on the revegetated sections. An integral part of the management plan for the waste rock dump involves characterisation of waste rock to identify geochemical rock types according to acid forming potential with provision for selective placement within the dump. High-risk materials are selectively placed and covered within the core of the waste rock dump, where possible, to control sulphide oxidation. Monitoring equipment has been installed in the waste rock dump by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an on-going monitoring program has been established to demonstrate the integrity of the dump cover as a barrier to the influx of atmospheric oxygen into the dump. The overall objectives of this program of work are to control the oxidation of sulphidic waste rock in the waste rock dump, minimise the risk of AD, prevent pollution of the aquatic environment and thereby demonstrate the integrity of the CMT waste rock dump management Strategy.

In their paper on the directional properties in cold-rolled and annealed commercial bronze,' Phillips and Samans suggest that cupronickel, under distinctly different treatments, shows both "45" ears" and "90" ears. Fig. I shows the ears on some cupronickel cups made some 17 years ago for bullet jackets for small arms ammunition. In this case the material heated to 425° C. had "45" ears, while that annealed at 950°C. showed long "90" ears" when drawn with the same tools. The method of cupping, the shape of cupping tools, etc., were found to have very little influence on the earing tendency, but the deeper the cup was drawn, the higher the ears would be. Method of Manufacture Cupronickel cast bars were 1 in. thick. Ordinarily, they were rolled with numerous passes to a thickness of 0.4 to 0.2 in., according to conditions. They were then given a single intermediate anneal, and rolled to finish thickness, frequently 0.032 in. After a last anneal the material was cupped with a "cut and draw" operation. In a small tank, slurry is passed through the high shear impeller zone with small time intervals, and a large proportion is regularly exposed to air at the surface, and at relatively high shear rates. This accounts for significant differences in the performance of large and small tanks. It is preferable to derive data where possible directly from an operating plant rather than applying data generated in small tanks where allowances must be estimated for the above differences [and where slurry aging and often substantial cooling compared to hot freshly milled ore further distorts results]. Various measurements have shown that many gold slurries can suffer extreme variability, as streamers of bypassing material or boules of hold-up periodically condstitute the instantaneous discharge from a tank - the relatively high Yield stress of slurries [around 1 to 10 Pa] causes very incomplete homogenization of slurry in any tank, the worse the larger the tank and the more viscous the slurry. To provide a background for this subject, this monograph presents leach and adsorption models based on the fundamental physics and chemistry of these processes, and includes quantitative discussions of factors which can lead to deviations on scale-up. The Throughflow model which avoids the need for such alowances is then presented, as well as a Computer Programme applying this model, and which allows direct calculation of the effects of:

Round Mountain is one of a number of locations investigated by the Bureau of Mines in its search for manganese deposits during the early phases at the strategic minerals program. The Suiter mine, on Round Mountain, had provided some 5,000 tons of manganese concentrates during the period 1917 to 1919, and early in 1941 prospecting by the Virginia Hardwood Lumber Co. in this same area had discovered manganese on what later became known as the Hall Pit. These promising indications encouraged the Bureau to begin an exploration project in search of additional reserves of manganese on Round Mountain in January 1942 (fig. 1).

THE mine here described is in the Witbank district, a coal area of the Transvaal, about 100 miles north- east of Johannesburg. and is owned by the Witbank Colliery, Ltd. The plant has a capacity of 4000 tons per eight hours, and prepares five sizes of coal. The coal seam lies at a depth of about 200 ft. below the surface, and is reached by an inclined shaft sunk at an angle of 18° with the horizontal. Although the thickness of the coal seam varies from 10 to 14 ft. or more, only about a 7-ft. bench is mined. Mining is by the hord and pillar system. Bords are driven 18 ft. wide, with pillars measuring 18 ft. square. The mine is laid out into four sections, each sewed by a main haulage way from the shaft. Arc-wall machines are used for cutting the coal. but all loading is done by hand. Native labor is employed under the supervision of white miners, who do the required blasting. The workings are practically free from gas and water, and very little timber is needed.

Mobile roof support (MRS) machines are used as roof support during pillar recovery in retreat operations in lieu of wooden posts, cribs, or hydraulic props. A Mine Safety and Health Administration-permissible load rate monitoring system was developed for the MRS by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The system uses a dedicated embedded processor to monitor changes in pressure inside the hydraulic cylinders of the MRS through multiplexed data acquisition channels and converts these pressure changes to load rates that sequentially activate three load-rate-indicator lights mounted on the machine. Each light represents a different loading rate to alert mine personnel to dangerous conditions during pillar extraction.

Empirical data from 91 rock excavations have been used to construct a family of slope curves on a chart relating excavation height and inclination. The highest and steepest slopes from each excavation are plotted and connected by a line. The 31 1ines appear to establish one or two geometrical slope fields through which the curves are projected. The curves apparently represent a lumped eflect of many factors too complex to be considered individually. Important factors such as geological structure or ground-water conditions can dominate the picture, but where these factors do not overshadow others, the slope chart should be useful for estimating or checking optimum inclination. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAE) has been engaged since 1962 with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in a joint research program to develop nuclear excavation technology. The Corps is responsible for collecting the requisite data on engineering and construction problems associated with nuclear excavation. The ultimate objective is to develop a capability to use nuclear explosives as a construction tool on public works projects such as harbors and canals. The present study on empirical inclination-height curves for conventionally excavated slopes is an outgrowth of an investigation' sponsored by the USAE Nuclear Cratering Group on applicability of data from existing excavations in establishing guides for engineering judgment in crater excavation. Data were generously contributed by over 50 mining companies among other organizations. Inasmuch as several companies preferred that their contribution be anonymous, all data are treated so here. Some Factors Affecting Stability Many factors affect or are suspected of affecting the stability of excavated slopes, e.g., adverse structural orientation, degree of structural ordering, ground water, climatic conditions, mechanics of excavation, and plan-profile configuration. Such factors are lumped together in developing a slope chart. Obviously geological structure and ground water can overshadow all other factors. Where such is the case, the simplification of slope charts may give an erroneous picture (not conservative enough). A further complication results from the fact that the concept of stability may vary according to the use of the excavations. For example, slope adjustments that would be regarded as failure in a powerhouse excavation, might be tolerable in a mining operation. Mine slopes are continually being modified by further excavation, and instability that would develop in a similar permanent excavation slope over a period of years might not have time to develop in a mine. Inclination vs. Height Charts Charts of inclination vs. height for particular formations or conditions have been used in the past as an aid for designing excavation slopes. Some of these have been based upon empirical analyses of collections of data and experience. MacDonald" and Lane have presented slope tables and charts for excavated and natural slopes in relatively weak sandstone and shale. Coates' has shown an inclination-height chart for slopes in incompetent rock. Most organizations have developed slope design criteria which relate bench widths, heights, and inclinations to use in various rocks. Slope data collected in present studies can be similarly used to develop inclination-height charts; however, a plot of all slopes on such a chart shows very little because of the wide spread of the data. Reasons for the dispersion of points are: (1) many slopes are not carried at optimum inclination, particularly in mines where maintaining roadways and following irregularities of ore bodies are more important than achieving steep inclinations; (2) many engineers and geologists with varied backgrounds and viewpoints have been involved in designing these slopes; and (3) each slope is characterized by a unique combination of factors affecting stability and in turn optimum inclination. Significant curves can sometimes be constructed where the points can be grouped into related clusters from the same excavation. The essence of this approach appears when only two slopes from each excavation are considered—the highest slope and the steepest slope, connected by a line segment (Fig. 1). This reduces considerably the usable data because in many cases only one of these two slopes is available. Nevertheless, the concession seems justified. "The Whitewood Mine near Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Approximately 2 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal is supplied annually to the Wabamun Generating Plant. A high water table, high groundwater pressure, and structural folds contribute to stability problems in the fine-grained overburden. Significant increases in coal recovery have been achieved in recent years through improvements in water management and mining methods. Agricultural capability of the post-mining landscape has also been improved following the completion of mining/ reclamation activities. Introduction The Whitewood Mine, located to the north of Lake Wabamun and seventy kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Figure 1 shows the location of the Whitewood Mine with respect to the city of Edmonton. The mine presently supplies two million tonnes annually of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to the 582-megawatt Wabamun Generating Plant located adjacent to the mine. The area is characterized by a high water table-, rolling coal seams and an overburden that consists of muskeg, clay and various sedimentary layers of sand, gravel and fine-grained sandstone. These distinctive characteristics require careful attention in order to not only meet the coal delivery requirements of the Wabamun Generating Plant but also to do so economically. "Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in South Africa received official recognition after the change in government in 1994.The Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) recognized the sector as a vehicle for social and economic development for historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) who had previously been excluded from participating in the mainstream economy. Having recognized the ASM sector, government introduced several interventions and support structures to foster the development of ASM, to encourage participation of HDSAs, and to address challenges facing the sector. The objective of this paper is to assess the progress made, with particular regard to challenges in the sector. The paper focuses on the policy requirements that were deemed important for the growth of the ASM sector by the White Paper on Minerals and Mining Policy (1998). These can be collated into five categories: access to mineral rights, access to finance, access to markets, technology and skills, and institutional support. The paper provides a review of the support interventions, their intended roles and impact on the sector, and identifies existing gaps and possible ways of dealing with the challenges. There is a need for research to assess the real impact of these past and existing interventions on the ASM sector to draw lessons for future development.IntroductionThe significant rise in artisanal and smallscale mining (ASM) activities worldwide has led to many countries recognizing the sector. ASM takes place in approximately 80 countries (World Bank, 2013). It is estimated that the sector employs between 20 and 30 million people around the world (Buxton, 2013). This compares to between 3 and 3.7 million in 1999 (International Labour Organization, 1999). ASM activities are widespread, occurring mostly in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America (World Bank, 2013). There has been a significant increase in the number of people participating both directly and indirectly in the sector and this is expected to continue given the socio-economic realities of most developing countries. High levels of poverty and unemployment and growing inequality continue to be largest problems facing the majority of developing countries today. The ASM sector plays an important role as a source of livelihoods, particularly for those residing in rural areas with limited economic opportunities. In the majority of countries, the recognition of the ASM sector was driven by its increasing contribution to socio-economic development through job creation, poverty alleviation, and rural development. In response, a number of intervention strategies were introduced in support of the sector to address its negative impacts and to increase its potential benefits."
