This paper deals with the Asarco method for the determination of equipment availability. It is apparent that no single availability equation will provide all of the information necessary for the complete record of equipment availability. In the Asarco system, three separate availability records are carried on major equipment. The first is mechanical availability, the second is operational availability, and the third is a historical record of equipment use. The derivation of the three items and the definitions of the time elements used in the various availability equations are presented and discussed. The Mission unit of American Smelting and Refining Co. is located in Pima County, Ariz., approximately twenty miles southwest of Tucson. The unit consists of an open pit copper mine and concentrator. The concentrate is shipped by rail to company smelters at Hayden, Ariz., or El Paso, Tex. Mine stripping began at Mission in the fall of 1959, and construction of the 15,000 tpd concentrator was started in the spring of 1960. The first ore was treated in midsummer of 1961 and full ore production was reached in August 1961. At that time over 46 million tons of material had been moved from the pit. Current production (ore and waste) averages over 100,000 tpd. Total production to date (ore and waste) is over 120 million tons. The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.5 and 3 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year product Lon period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 Indexes. Initial capital investment is $33.8 million for the 1.5-MM-tpy mine and $61 million for the 3-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $52.5 and $94.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $34.87 and $31.31 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $12.06 and $10.94 per ton for the 1.5- and 3-MM-tpy mines.

Man's material advance from one level of civilization to the next has involved the development of new, more useful tools and the utilization of energy greater than he alone could produce. These two essentials for material progress have developed at an ever increasing rate in the last century. While the first really successful use of mechanical energy derived from burning fuel was in James Watt's steam engine which pumped water from coal mines in Cornwall about 1770, there was still very little use of mechanical energy in mining by 1900 except for pumping and hoisting. Compressed air, having some of the characteristics of steam and which operated engines not unlike steam engines or steam hammers, powered the first attempts to mine coal with energy greater than human muscle could provide. When direct current-powered traction cars replaced horse-drawn transportation cars on city streets, it was natural that direct current locomotives should begin to replace animal and human power in mine haulage. Slowly, trolley and battery locomotives were developed and introduced. With d-c systems being established for haulage, it was natural that improved cutting machines should be developed and powered by d-c motors. Thus began the years of

Devido ao grande aumento da concentração de gases do efeito estufa, a criação de uma energia limpa tem sido um desafio para a ciência e as indústrias. Após identificar possíveis soluções para este problema uma alternativa seria a utilização de biomassa vegetal com capacidade térmica como fonte energética redutora no processo de redução do minério de ferro em altos-fornos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo utilizar capim elefante (Pennisetum purpureum) e carvão mineral na injeção de finos pulverizados pelas ventaneiras de altos-fornos nas siderúrgicas a fim de reduzir custos da produção de ferro gusa e reduzir a dependência de combustíveis fósseis no processo. O capim elefante é uma fonte renovável e de rápido crescimento que através da fotossíntese captura o CO2 da atmosfera, reduzindo a poluição causada pelos altos-fornos. Para simular a injeção dos materiais estudados foi construído na Escola de Minas - UFOP um modelo de partículas de combustão para analisar as amostras. Outras técnicas são utilizadas para caracterização como combustão, calorimetria, análise de gás, análise química imediata e elementar. Assim, em teoria, esta pesquisa mostra que o capim elefante misturado com carvão mineral através de sua injeção em altos-fornos mostrou-se viável em termos metalúrgicos e ambientais.

ABSTRACT: A 400m2 (480 yd2) heavily reinforced high-strength concrete slab 800mm (31 inch) thick had to be demolished. Underneath it was a 300mm (12 inch) thick underlying structure consisting of three layers: a cushion coat, a water barrier and a concrete layer that protected the water barrier. It was strongly desired by the owner that the underlying structure, especially the water barrier, remain undamaged during the blasting demolition of the reinforced concrete slab above it. This paper discusses the design of the demolition blast, problems encountered, and practical solutions to these problems. First, the impact caused by the charge explosion on the remaining structure was studied. In order to limit crack propagation in the concrete to the bottom of the concrete layer, the concrete isolation layer underneath the bottom of the slab to be demolished was left in place, to protect the water barrier and its protection layer. The effects of blasting vibrations on adjacent concrete were analyzed and precautions were proposed in the design. A safe blast design meeting the requirements to protect the water barrier below the slab was detailed. Rainwater collected and stored above the remaining underlying structure remained in place for two weeks, confirming that the design and blasting were successful.

Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1943 resulted in the discovery of 11 new fields as compared with 12 discovered in the same area during I942. Of the 11 new fields, eight are classed as oil and/or condensate and three as gas fields. In addition to the new discoveries, several more or less important new horizons and extensions were encountered in some of the older fields, as noted in the text under the heading "New Pays and Extensions.'' Drilling During the year, 418 wells were drilled, as compared with 356 drilled during 1942. Of these, 323 were field wells, of which 188 produced oil, 21 were gas wells and 114 were dry holes. The remaining 95 viere wildcats, 12 of which produced oil, 4 produced gas and 79 dry holes. Distribution of themwildcats with respect to the various trends may be summarized as follows: over the 91,340,492 bbl. produced in the same area during 1942. The production statistics in the text and the accompanying tables include condensate or distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties all of the drilling and production" data applicable to this particular area. Outstanding Fields of 1943 The Upper Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 178 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the 1943 discoveries. Of these Table 4 lists those that were most important from the standpoint of production. Each of these fields pro duced in excess of one million barrels of oil during 1943. Some of the interesting facts to be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields are: (I) four of the fields— namely, Conroe, Hastings, Friendswood and Thompson—each produced more than 10 million barrels during 1943, whcrcas Conroe and Hastings were the only fields that produced 10 million barrels during 1942; (2) some of the older fields (discovered prior to 1920), such as Barbers Hill, West Columbia, and Hull, are still producing in excess of one million barrels annually; (3) some of the fields more than doubled their 1942 production—e.g., Anahuac and Friendswood. The relative contents of Au in a series of groundwaters from water bores and exploration drillholes, located near Au mineralisation at Stawell, Ararat, Clunes and Ballarat in central Victoria, were found to be clear indicators of relative proximity to mineralisation in each region. In the same series, waters with anomalous concentrations of As distinguished Au mineralisation in bedrock from secondary palaeochannel or deep lead Au. In some groundwaters, acid pH values, high sulphate relative to other anions and detectable concentrations of reduced Fe reflected sulphide minerals associated with bedrock Au deposits. Close to some ore zones, locally anomalous groundwater concentrations of Mn reflected the Fe carbonates that accompany Au in these zones. In addition, elevated concentrations of other elements provided geochemical signatures for the aquifer lithologies associated with Au mineralisation. Of the lithological indicators Co and Ni, U and F, Rb and Cs, Mo and Li respectively reflected the mafic, felsic, potassic rich and quartz zones, principally in the Stawell mine area and to a lesser extent those at Clunes and Ballarat. Mineral stability diagrams, based on groundwater activities of K', Mgt and H`, demonstrated that a series of ore-zone groundwaters follow a trend that conforms with a biotite to sericite to kaolinite alteration sequence in aquifer mineralogy. This is a good illustration of how present day groundwaters under surface conditions can reflect the underlying mineral sequences that accompany these Au deposits. These observations around mine areas suggested that groundwater chemistry could provide a rapid and cost effective method of assessing prospectivity for An of extensive areas in central Victoria. To test this, regional sampling and analysis of 355 bore waters was carried out in a region where potential An bearing rocks are covered by Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments and volcanics. Contoured elemental abundances and distribution from this program indicated five zones in which groundwaters had elevated Au and despite the cover, appeared to reflect variations in the underlying Palaeozoic rocks. Three of the Au zones could be in terrain affected by extensions or intersections of faults, a feature in common with the established Au deposits in central Victoria. Reflections of concealed Palaeozoic rocks included a possible zone of concealed Cambrian greenstones that coincides with three of the Au zones. It was concluded that each of the An zones represents a groundwater Au focus that warrants follow-up exploration.

The Yaojialing zinc-gold polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered, large skarn deposit in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt, East China. It is located in the transitional zone between the Tongling uplift block and the Fanchang faulted basin. It is mainly hosted in the contact zone between early Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry and Carboniferous-Triassic limestone, or occurs in limestone xenoliths within the intrusion. Skarn and stratabound massive sulfide orebodies are the primary ore styles. Sulfide ?34SV-CDT values indicate a magmatic sulfur source, in common with most deposits in the Tongling block. Calcite d13CV-PDB and d18OV-SMOW ratios reveal that marine carbonates were the major source of carbon in late-stage hydrothermal fluids. Gentlemen : If my first words were other than those of thanks for the high honor of being called to preside over the American Institute of Mining Engineers, I should do injustice alike to you and to my own sense of the obligation, under which I have been placed by your voluntary choice. When the position was first suggested to me, I resolutely declined to allow the use of my name, on the ground that, by training and occopation, I was not entitled to this honor, which, it then seemed to me, should be conferred only on a professional engineer. In fact, the history of the Institute, which had honored itself, as well as my distinguished predecessors, David Thomas, Rossiter W. Raymond, and Alexander L. Holley, by elevating then] to its highest office, seemed to indicate the line and the limit of safe precedent, in which I did not then see how I could be included. But my scruples were finally removed by the consideration that, as in the course of human industry, the pioneer, of whom Mr. Thomas was so marked a type, must precede the mining engineer, so fitly personified in Dr. Raymond, and be followed by the mechanical engineer, whose incarnation we behold in Mr. Holley; so all these must be supplemented by the man of affairs and finance, in order that "enterprises of great pith and moment" may be prosecuted to a successful issue. I felt, therefore, that I had no longer any right to resist your preference, or to deprive myself of what I must regard as the crowning honor of an active career. On an occasion like the present it seems appropriate to review the history in this country, during the last hundred years, of those industries which the Institute of Mining Engineers specially represents. There is much in the story with which other members of this body are more familiarly acquainted than myself; yet I fancy that to all of them, and not less to our distinguished and most heartily welcome gnests from abroad, a comprehensive outline of the progress of mining and metallurgy in the United States mill prove interesting. Cerâmicas argilosas foram processadas com adição de até 30% em peso de resíduos de pedra ornamental e queimadas a 900, 950, 1000 e 1050°C. Esta adição contribuiu para ajustar a plasticidade do corpo da argila e aumentar a densidade seca aparente, que ocasiona um empacotamento mais elevado das partículas. A cerâmica adicionada diminuiu sua retração linear com a quantidade de resíduos e evita assim alterações dimensionais excessivas nos produtos finais. Outra vantagem foi a diminuição na absorção de água com resíduos adicionados. As resistências à flexão e à compressão sofreram uma diminuição associada à adição de resíduos. Isto foi atribuído à grande quantidade de quartzo nos resíduos, que gera rachaduras e enfraquece o produto final. No entanto, até 30% em peso de adição a resistência mecânica, de acordo com a norma ASTM, é ainda satisfatória para utilização como cerâmica de pavimentação.

Partition of certain elements, particularly nickel, was determined for slowly cooled steels, the greater number containing from 0.30 to 0.35 pct C. Approximately 3 pct of the nickel, 18 pct of the manganese, 33 pct of the molybdenum, and 35 pct of the chromium occur in the carbide phase. Partition of one element is not much affected by the presence of another. THE object of this investigation was: 1—to determine the partition of nickel between cemen-tite and ferrite in a medium and high carbon series of annealed steels; 2—to evaluate the effect of chromium and/or molybdenum or both on the partition of nickel in medium carbon annealed steels; 3— to determine the partition of chromium between ferrite and carbide in a series of medium carbon annealed steels; and 4—to study the chemistry of the carbides formed in an AISI 2330 steel during both isothermal transformation, and quench and draw experiments at 1150°F (620°C). The partition of alloying elements between ce-mentite and ferrite in annealed steels has been the subject of many investigations, a summary of which has been given by Austin1. However, there is no satisfactory data available concerning the partition of nickel. It has generally been assumed that virtu- ally all of the nickel concentrates in the ferrite phase in annealed steels. Two investigators"." have reported the finding of nickel in extracted carbide residues. Recently, it has been shown4 that nickel substitutes up to 40 pct for iron in the lattice of cementite produced by the low temperature carburization of iron-nickel powders. In addition to the lack of data on nickel partition, the literature also fails to make reference to the effect of other elements on the nickel content of the carbide in nickel-bearing steels. This report describes the results of a Bureau of Mines investigation in which an elastic inclusion, orebody, or mining system is replaced for purposes of analysis with an imaginary effective inclusion of rectangular shape that encloses the region. This effective inclusion has averaged physical properties that are directly related to the average inclusion stresses. The results were in excellent agreement with those predicted by Donnell's theory (2)2 for an isotropic elliptical inclusion in a state of plane strain for all height-to-width ratios and for all degrees of inclusion hardness from very soft to very hard. The results are exact for an isotropic circular inclusion and provide an easy method of evaluating the stresses obtained by cylindrical inclusions in boreholes when the Poisson's ratio for both host and inclusion equals 0.25 for plane strain or 0.333 for plane stress. The theory was also used to predict the average stresses in 48 finite-element models of single transversely isotropic inclusions of ovaloid and rectangular shape. An interesting and useful observation from this work was that the forces on elliptical inclusions in the x and y directions, produced by applied uniaxial stresses in the y and x directions, respectively, were equal in magnitude but opposite in sign when the applied stresses were equal. This occurred when the plane strain condition was used with a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. The practical usefulness of the method is given by treating a variety of mining problems: (1) The average stresses in an orebody of irregular shape; (2) the average stresses in single-level room-and-pillar mining systems; (3) the average stresses in multiple-level room-and-pillar mining systems; (4) the effect of mining sequence on the average stresses produced during mining; (5) the stresses in cylindrical borehole plug related to host rock stresses as a function of plug hardness; and (6) methods for simplifying finite-element analysis of complex structures.

A mineral survey of the Rough Hills WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in northeastern Nevada was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is comprised of 6,685 acres of mountainous, desert lands within the Elko District of the Bureau of Land Management. The survey entailed investigations of prospects or mineral occurrences to provide information on possible resources within the WSA. No mineral resources were identified in the WSA. The only historical mining activity was for placer gold at the Prunty prospect at the confluence of Copper Creek and the Bruneau River. Total gravel at the prospect is about 6,500 cubic yards; however, the survey showed significant gold values (greater than $0.10 gold per cubic yard) only in the southwestern portion. There, however, the gravel averaged less than $1.00 gold per cubic yard, and only about 3,000 cubic yards are present, a grade and yardage insufficient to be of commercial interest. The occurrence, however, may have value for recreational mining by hobbyists.

"This paper presents the results of a 2017 study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations within a longwall abutment pillar under deep cover. The 2017 study was conducted in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-foot-wide longwall panels under 1,185 feet of cover. One 650-foot-deep, in-place inclinometer monitoring well was drilled and installed over a 150-foot by 275-foot center abutment pillar. In addition to the monitoring well, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the 1,500-foot-wide longwall panel on the south side of the abutment pillar was being mined.Prior to the first longwall excavation, a number of simulations using FLAC3D™ (Itasca, 2017) were conducted to estimate surface subsidence, increases in underground coal pillar pressure, and subsurface horizontal displacements in the monitoring well. Comparisons of the pre-mining FLAC3D simulation results and the surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation results show that the measured in-place inclinometer casing deformations are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the 3D finite difference models. The measured surface subsidence and pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models. Results from this 2017 research clearly indicate that, under deep cover, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are approximately one order of magnitude smaller than those measured in a 2014 study under medium cover.INTRODUCTIONDue to a recent shale gas boom, approximately 1,400 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled through active and future coal reserves in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio over the past 15 years. These shale gas wells have penetrated many coal seams, such as the Sewickley, Pittsburgh, Upper Freeport, and Kittanning seams. These unconventional gas wells, whether tapped into the Marcellus or Utica formations, contain very high gas pressure. Strata deformations associated with longwall and other high extraction techniques could induce high stresses and deformations in the shale gas well casings. This could seriously compromise the mechanical integrity of the production, intermediate, and coal protection casings (Figure 1). Damaged well casings could potentially introduce high-pressure, explosive gas into underground mine workings, particularly during an extended well shut-in period, which could seriously jeopardize underground miners’ safety and health."

The Pao deposits of iron ore are in the State of Bolivar, Venezuela, near Upata, about 30 miles south of the Orinoco River and 90 miles east of Ciudad Bolivar. They were discovered 4 or 5 years ago and have not yet been developed to the stage of mining. In March-April, 1929, the writer devoted a week to the examination of these deposits. The maps, drill records and chemical analyses presented herewith were derived from original sources, and the field photographs were made by the writer. The petrographic and metallographic data are from notes by C. S. Ross and M. N. Short, of the U. S. Geological Survey, who have kindly collaborated in these special phases of the study. The Iron Obebodies Topography and Accessibility The deposits are in a region of low mountains representing northern outliers of the Guayanan Highlands. These mountains reach altitudes of 1800 to more than 2000 ft. above sea level, as determined by aneroid barometer. The iron ore is found on mountain crests that reach altitudes of 1915 to 1930 ft., and may be followed down precipitous slopes for 200 • to 300 ft. or more. The greatest vertical range in outcrop is nearly 400 ft., and drilling has indicated that the ore extends to this depth below the surface in one place, at least. The superior hardness of the iron ore accounts for the preservation of the local mountain crests with the intermediate valleys eroded in softer granitic rock. The deposits of iron ore are reached by a private road for automobiles branching northeast from the Ciudad Bolivar-Upata road, a distance of about 12 miles. This road was used in 1928-29 by trucks for transportation of food and camp supplies, gasoline, drilling equipment, etc., but was not suitable for the transportation of iron ore. Between Ciudad Bolivar and the iron-ore area the western two-thirds of the automobile road passes through nearly level, open country known as the savanna, largely used for grazing cattle. In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The occurrence of chromite in the Knik Valley near Palmer, Alaska, was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1941 by George Johnson, of Anchorage. At that time a preliminary investigation was made by Robert S. Sanford, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. The area was investigated on June 4 and 5, 1943, by Henry R. Joesting and Leo H. Saarela, engineers of the Territorial Department of Mines. In August 1942, a second chromite occurrence, the Highway deposit, in the Knik Valley, was reported to the Territorial Department of Mines by John E. Ryan of Anchorage.

The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is under construction now in Korea. For the stability analysis of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For this analysis, in-situ rock stresses were measured by overcoring method and horizontal to vertical stress ratio was calculated 1.07-1.32 at four sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from intact rock properties. The ratio of elasticity of rock mass was 0.16-0.55 of intact rock core elasticity. In general, elasto-plasticity with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was applied and the input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 of intact rock strength parameters, respectively. Der sechste Untergrund-gepumpt-Powerhouse-Cavern ist jetzt im Bau in Korea. Für die vergan-gene Stabilitätsanalyse des fünf unterirdischen Powerhouses in Gebrauch wurde ein begrenztess Elementsmethode benutzt. Für die Analyse wurden In-Situ Felsenspannungen von overcoring Methode gemessen und Horizontale zu senkrechtem Spannungsverhältnis waren als 1.07-1.32 an vier Stellen kalkuliert. Felsenmassenkraft und Elastizität wurden von unversehrtem Felsenei-gentümern angenommen. Das Verhältnis der Elastizität von Felsenmasse war 0.16-0.55 von un-versehrter Felsenkernelastizität. Im allgemeinen wurde Elasto-Plasticity mit Ausfallskriterium des Mohr-Coulombs verwendet. Die Eingabebindekraft und die innere Reibungswinkel waren unge-fähr 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 von unversehrtem Felsenkraftsparametern, jeweilig. L'intensite et l'elasticite de la masse de roche ont ete estimees de la roche intacte. Quant a l'elastic-ite, sa masse de roche etait 0.16-0.55 fois que celle de la roche intacte. En general, elasto-plasticite avec le critere de defaut Mohr-Coulomb etait utilisee et sa cohesion d'energie et son angle de friction interieure etaient supposees respectivement 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 fois que la parametre de l'intensite de roche intacte.

A technique has been developed that analyzes routine mill operating data to determine the key operating parameters responsible for gold losses to tails. These parameters represent the prime operating variables having a dominant effect on gold recovery. The technique quantifies these effects for the specific plant being analyzed, providing a tool to optimize recovery and costs and so enhance the mine?s cash flow. The quantitative relationships generated will be different for each ore and plant: every case is site-specific and has to be treated on its merits. Examples are provided to illustrate the considerable metallurgical and financial benefits which can be realized from optimization. The examples are taken from case studies of mills in four major gold mining districts of the world.
