"Flotation tests were conducted on a mixed copper ore sample containing bornite and malachite with trace quantity of other secondary copper minerals. The bornite component was very floatable, in sharp contrast to poor flotation characteristics of other copper minerals. A Box-Behnken experimental design methodology was used to study effects of three main reagents, namely potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), hydroxamate (Cytec 6494) and diethylenetriamine (DETA). Pine oil, as a frother, was used at a fixed concentration. Three main models constructed using a statistical software included malachite recovery, overall copper recovery, and copper grade. Bornite recovery was not modelled as its recovery was consistently over 99 % in the presence of hydroxamate and PAX. In each model, the hydroxamate dosage was the dominant parameter (at 95% significance level) determining the recovery of main components including that of gangue, which manifested itself by lowering the copper grade of the concentrate. In comparison, PAX was effective only at 90% significance level. DETA did not affect the overall recovery of copper or malachite significantly, but appeared to cause a significant decline in the concentrate grade, especially when used simultaneously with hydroxamate. Various quadratic models developed for the flotation system investigated are presented."

The development of increasingly more sophisticated and powerful retreat longwall equipment has led to ever wider and longer panels. To maximize gateroad development efficiency, provide for effective face recovery, andlor reduce ventilation pressures, entries are cut across longwall panels in advance of longwall retreat mining. These entries must be supported to prevent falls of immediate roof in advance of the face. Recently, cut through entries and predriven recovery room entries have been supported with various combinations of roof bolts and passive support. The cost and relative success of these support systems has varied considerably. Eighty-Four Mining Company, Fosroc, and Sub-Technical have developed and implemented an efficient, yielding, multiple component, cement crib to support longwall panel cut through entries and pre-driven recovery rooms. The cutable crib consists of an inexpensive flyash cement pillar poured in a bag, within a temporary metal form. The form is moved to a subsequent cutable crib location after the initial hardening of the flyash pillar. The remaining entry height between the mine roof and the top of the flyash cement pillar is filled with a specially designed bag filled with Fosroc's Tekset cement formulation. The diameter of the pillar and thickness of the Tekset bag are designed to accommodate the anticipated front abutment loading and entry convergence.

The vapor phase deposition of molybdenum and tungsten from the hexacar-bonyls has been thoroughly investigated by Lander and Germerl, and shown to yield well-bonded coatings on a variety of hot metallic surfaces. They also demonstrated that chromium coatings2'3 could be similarly deposited, but did not investigate this metal extensively. Recently, conditions have been described by which this compound can be prepared in quantities sufficient for laboratory scale plating experiments, and it is the purpose of the present communication to outline the results of preliminary experiments upon the plating of chromium from its carbonyl. Apparatus and Technique The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig I. At one end, connected by a short length of rubber tubing, is a Cenco Hypervac 20 pumping continuously. At the opposite end is a needle valve which allows a small stream of purified hydrogen to flow through the apparatus. Connected in series are a trap T1, maintained at the temperature of dry ice and acetone, the plating chamber, and two traps T² and T3 containing crystals of the carbonyl. T² is kept in a constant temperature bath (not shown), while T³ is at room temperature. Stopcock S6 allows the hydrogen flow to by-pass the carbonyl traps. A McLeod gauge is connected so that it can measure the pressure at the pump through Se, or the pressure at the plating chamber through S9 and S6. The standard (12 liter) volume connected by Sb is used to determine the volume included by S4, S6, SB, Slot the needle valve and the McLeod gauge. Knowledge of this volume allows calibration of the flow of hydrogen. The apparatus* is built entirely of pyrex, except for the needle valve, the rubber connection to the Hypervac, and the cover of the plating chamber. The plating chamber is water-jacketed, with a large brass top allowing insertion of the specimen to be plated. Set into the brass top is a ground glass stopper through which thermocouple leads are sealed. The thermocouple wires (pure Pt, and 87 pct Pt-13 pct Rh) serve the double purpose of measuring the specimen temperature and suspending it in the chamber. Surrounding the chamber is the coil of an induction heater, H. The apparatus is designed to allow variation of the following conditions: (I) the specimen temperature, from room temperature to about 1000°C, (2) the carbonyl vapor pressure, from 40 to 220 microns, and (3) the hydrogen flow. The great Bingham Canyon mine and mill complex of Magna, Arthur, and Bonneville had their beginning in a 300 ton per day operation which was commenced by Daniel C. Jackling and his associates in 1904 as the Utah Copper Company. This small plant was quickly expanded to 500 tons per day and eventually Kennecott, the Utah Copper successor, was processing about 45,000 tons per day of ore in each of its mills, Magna and Arthur. Finally, in 1966, the Bonneville crushing and grinding plant was added to produce a slurry of ground ore for flotation concentration at the expanded Magna and Arthur mills. Bonneville is one of the few railroad dump primary gyratory crushing plants constructed in recent years; another which is described in this Monograph is Cuajone in Peru, started in 1976. Two others are the Climax Henderson unit and the Phelps Dodge Tyrone crusher, which has been fed by trucks since it commenced operation. The Bonneville, Henderson, and Cuajone crushers are all located considerable distances from their mines, hence the use of rail haulage. Shovels in the Bingham pit are 8 to 15 yd capacity; and ore is sent to the Bonneville crusher in 100 ton rail cars, where they are dumped, two at a time, by a hydraulically driven rotary dumper. Ahead of the 54 in. by 74 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratory are two grizzlies, each 27 ft 9 in. (8.46 m) long with bar spacings of 4 ½ in. (114 mm) at the feed end and 6 in. (152 mm) at the discharge end. Grizzlies are sloped at 38. Oversize rocks are re- moved from the crusher pocket by an overhead crane, and the crusher produces a nominal 6 in. (152 mm) product. Rail cars are dumped in the direction away from the crusher, and water sprays at the dumper level and in the rock boxes are used for dust suppression. There are two 72 in. by 19 ft (1.83 m by 5. 8 m) apron feeders under the 500 st cr'ushed ore pocket and two more under the grizzly undersize pocket. Feeder speeds are variable up to 72 fpm. Grizzly undersize is dropped to the feeder pocket by three shelves forming a rock ladder attached to the pocket walls. Each pair of apron feeders, one for crushed ore and one for grizzly undersize, discharge to a 72 in. (1. 83 m) picking belt for tramp removal; this belt feeds one of two 54 in. (1.37 m) feeder conveyors which in turn discharge to a 60 in. (1. 52 m) takeaway belt operating at 175-300 fpm (53.3 - 97.4 mpm). Both picking belts are equipped with metal detectors and tramp iron magnets, and a separate 30 in. (760 mm) conveyor is used to remove tramp material.

Coal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation's deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only after ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental compositon of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines. There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First, after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies. Further. assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location, a mining company could predict anew mine's respirable dust elemental composition in the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof, coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design. much time and money could be saved. Scope of work To investigate the variability of the chemical characteris tics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and midwestern United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee (1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs. The procedure that was used to produce the laboratory generated respirable dust was based on the Hardgrove grindability test since it reflects the pulverizing characteristics of coal. This test was chosen for several additional reasons. First, it is repeatable and reproducible. A consistent amount of input energy is used as well as a specified size range of feed material to be crushed (the channel samples). Second, it is thought to generate secondary dust in a way similar to that of the crushing and grinding of the coal and rock as they pass through the arc-shaped cutting path of the CM's cutter head. The potential effect on dust generation by this secondary grinding mechanism may be at least as much as that produced by primary fragmentation, which is dust produced by the cutting action of the bit against the coal or rock (Roepke. 1984). Finally, the Hardgrove grindability test is well known and is used in the coal industry to guide mineral processing engineers in estimating the capacity of mills used to grind coal. One hypothesis of dust researchers in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust is that the elemental as well as the physical characteristics of coal mine dust will make a difference in the incidence and severity of CWP. Coal mine dust is generated not only from coal, but also from any rock partings contained within the seam or any roof or floor material mined with the coal. Thus, coal mine dust may not have the same elemental characteristics as the coal being mined. Given that hypothesis, mixtures proportional to each thick¬ness mined of roof, coal, and floor rock derived from the channel samples of the face areas from which the respirable dusts were generated by the CMs were used to produce the feed material that was pulverized in the Hardgrove machine.

Lead-silver deposits in the Omilak area, on the western slopes of the Darby Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons, as a part of the U.S. Department of Interior's continuing program for the development of Alaska's resources. The Omilak area was the scene of early day prospecting and mining activity. The Omilak mine, which operated from 1881 to 1890, was the second producing lode mine in Alaska; the first was a small gold mine near Sitka. Several hundred tons of ore were produced at the Omilak mina; as an indication of grade, 41 tons shipped from Omilak in 1889 contained 75 percent lead and 142 ounces of silver per ton. A prominent, nearby occurrence of lead-silver minerals, found but not explored during this period, has since become known as the Foster prospect. Subsequent exploration of this prospect revealed an abundance of massive galena occurring on an outcrop and as float scattered through limestone talus. Evidence of lead deposition, together with the generally high silver content of lead ores previously shipped from the district, indicated that deposits might be found which would be commercially valuable even in this remote area. To investigate the possibility, the Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance of the Omilak area and did bulldozer trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling at the roster prospect. Data resulting from the investigation are presented in detail in this report and are summarized in the following paragraphs.

Basic characteristics of marine placer were systematically studied by chemical analyze, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction in this paper. It could be found that the marine placer mainly consists of titanomagnetite and titanohematite. A series of experiments were performed to investigate reduction-magnetic separation for Fe and Ti from the marine placer. Effects of reduction temperature, reduction time, carbon ratio, magnetic density, and grinding fineness on the reduction-magnetic separation process were investigated. And the optimal process parameters were obtained as follows: the reduction temperature 1300, the reduction time 30 min, the carbon ratio 1.1, the magnetic density 50mT, and the grinding fineness of 0.074μm 86.34%. Under such conditions, the metallization rate, iron grade of magnetic substance and iron recovery reached to 94.23%, 97.19% and 90.28% respectively, and the titanium grade in non-magnetic substance and recovery of was 57.94% and 87.22% respectively. The effective separation of iron and titanium could be achieved in reduction-magnetic separation process.

Merchants perform a number of functions in the copper market. As a major distribution arm of the copper industry, they secure scrap and other copper bearing materials for processing into usable refined shapes. These are ultimately sold to fabricators. Merchants ' hedging and arbitrage activities help keep values in proper relationship from product to product or region to region. Through these switching and trading operations, they optimize the flow of copper from mine to consumer. And finally, merchants act as a repository for copper units during times of surplus and a stockpile from which to draw during tines of shortage.

IN a previous series of papers, the results of studies made on various types of high purity base titanium alloys were presented. Included in this work were the Ti-Mn' and Ti-Cu' alloys, representative of sluggish and active eutectoid systems, respectively. The present paper gives the results of a simi- lar study made on Ti-Mo alloys as an example of a ß-isomorphous alloy system. Experimental Procedures Alloy Preparation—Six ½-lb ingots were prepared from iodide titanium and high purity molybdenum stock. The ingots were arc melted in a water-cooled copper crucible under an argon atmosphere. Each ingot was melted at least twice to insure homogeneity and complete solution of the molybdenum. This was done by inverting the ingot in the crucible and remelting completely.

Hydrodynamic investigations in exploratory boreholes and grouting holes are conducted for the purpose of obtain¬ing information about the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic section to be intersected by the proposed underground workings. The information obtained from the investigations provides the basis for calculating the hydrau¬lic coefficients of fractured permeable rock, the dimensions of the anticipated grout isolation curtain(s) around the un¬derground workings, the number and location of grouting holes, the injection pressure modes, and also the volume(s) of grout that will be required (Anon., 1976, 1978). The following data on each aquifer are obtained from the investigations conducted in monitoring and grouting bore¬holes and the analysis of the results: 1) the top of each hydrostratigraphic unit, 2) the thickness of each unit, 3) the ground water fluid potential distribution in each unit, 4) the coefficient of permeability, 5) the piezoconductivity, 6) the fracture porosity, 7) the geometry of the fractures in the rock, 8) the elasticity-compressibility coefficient of the fractured rock, 9) the chemical composition of the ground water, 10) the direction of flow of the ground water, and 11) the expected inflow rate of water into the shaft, drift or tunnel. STG uses its DAU-3M type flowmeter to conduct in¬vestigations of directions of flow in vertical, inclined and horizontal drillholes. The DAU-6 instrument is used to de¬termine the direction of flow of ground water in each frac¬ture or fractured aquifer. Various singular and double DAU type packers are used for pumping and for injection studies (tests) and for flowmeter investigations. Normally the instruments enumerated above permit in¬vestigations to be conducted in each separate aquifer with¬out reinforcing the holes with casings. On the basis of these investigative data, both the hydraulic properties of unfractured rock and the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock are estimated. Dual porosity rocks require special attention because they tend to segregate the grout. 3.1 FLOWMETER INVESTIGATIONS IN BOREHOLES The STG flowmetric methodology is based on the mea¬surement of the ground water flow rate through the borehole by hydrostratigraphic interval after the disturbance of the hydrostatic equilibrium in the "hole-aquifer system" (after pumping or injecting). The relationship of the head changes to the discharge into or from a particular hydrostratigraphic unit obtained during the tests serve as the basis for calcu¬lating the hydraulic properties. Flowmetric investigations facilitate the determination of the number of aquifers, their depths, their thickness, the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock and the magnitude and direction of the flow of ground water. 3.1.1 FLOWMETER HARDWARE STG conducts flowmetric investigations in boreholes using its DAU-3M-108, DAU-3M-73, DAU-3M-57 and DAU-3M-44 instruments.' They have respective external diameters of 108, 73, 57 and 44 mm. The type of flowmeter selected for use depends on the borehole geometry and the technological scheme for carrying out the investigations. Boreholes with a drilling diameter of 76-93 mm are inves¬tigated with the DAU-3M-73 flowmeter; boreholes drilled by bits with a diameter of 112 mm and more are investi¬gated using the DAU-3M-108 flowmeter. The DAU-3M¬108 and DAU-3M-57 instruments are used for flowmetric investigations with a packer. 3.1.1.1 The Downhole Sensor The sensor design of the DAU-3M-73 hole flowmeter is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the DAU-3M-108 instru¬ment is similar to the design of the DAU-3M-73 instrument. The frame of the flowmeter sensor shown in Fig. 2 consists of a casing, an upper and lower centering mount and two rings to which the guiding rods are attached. The upper rods are built into the connector bushing; the lower rods are built into the coupling sleeve. The borehole cable is attached using a half-coupling, a packing ring and a constriction nut. Thus, the frame of the flowmeter sensor is made so that the free passage of water to the impeller is facilitated along with the necessary rigidity. The primary moving component of the flowmeter is the double-bladed impeller, which rotates on cobalt-tungsten pivots and agate thrust bearings. Special extended air cham¬bers protect the supports of the impeller from the action of the borehole fluid which may contain fibrous and abrasive particles. The air located in the chambers shields the sup¬ports from direct contact with the borehole fluid when the sensor operates in a borehole. The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

Bonds are required by state and federal law to address reclamation when the permittee defaults. Under various principles of law, a bonding company may propose to perform the obligations of the permittee, however, the negotiations with the regulatory agencies, surface and mineral owners and other interested parties can create a very complicated scenario that requires an understanding of the law regarding environmental protection, bankruptcy and surety ship, along with technical expertise in land reclamation. This paper presents the engineering professional with a framework regarding areas of law that pertain to surety reclamation projects and negotiations with state and federal agencies and related parties. Though presented in the context of the coal industry, the principles discussed are generally applicable to the mining industry as a whole.

Frente ao crescente número de falhas por fadiga, o projeto considerando cargas cíclicas passou a ser uma fase natural da concepção e otimização de componentes, em especial de setores de responsabilidade, como aeronáutico, automobilístico e de óleo e gás. Em geral, as avaliações se baseiam em resultados de ensaios uniaxiais que empregam máquinas universais servo-controladas de tração-compressão ou tração-tração. Entretanto, embora precisos, tais equipamentos custam centenas de milhares de dólares, apresentam elevado custo operacional e de manutenção e exigem expressivo tempo para a realização dos ensaios. Como alternativas simples e baratas existem as máquinas do tipo flexão alternada (biela-manivela), as quais podem apresentar curvas de vida à fadiga comparáveis ao caso uniaxial se os campos de deformações e tensões nas amostras forem bem conhecidos. Dessa forma, buscando avançar nesse tópico e fazendo uso de refinados modelos não lineares de elementos finitos, este artigo apresenta uma metodologia de ensaios de flexão alternada controlada por deformação (curvas e-N), assim como uma análise crítica dos resultados experimentais. Foram ensaiados um aço SAE 1008 e um alumínio 1200 H14 e, além da geometria recomendada pela ASTM B593, uma nova geometria é proposta para menor dispersão dos resultados experimentais. A metodologia desenvolvida obteve sucesso na condução dos ensaios e a geometria proposta reduziu a dispersão dos resultados para o aço SAE 1008 que apresenta elevado encruamento. As curvas e-N obtidas, além de diretamente úteis para projetos mecânicos, apoiarão comparações futuras com resultados de fadiga uniaxial dos mesmos materiais.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two 2 in-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine. These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope Lo determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

Mineral processing activities in general reflected the economic ills of 1981 and early 1982, but in some areas the depressed state of the industry resulted in increased activity. As were all aspects of the minerals industry, processing plant operations were severely affected by the recession-prone economy, by sagging prices for primary metal products-copper, molybdenum, nickel, iron, manganese, and especially uranium-and numerous shutdowns and layoffs. Copper production by major producers in Arizona and Utah was severely curtailed; Amax, the major US molybdenum, producer did considerable belt-tightening; and the uranium industry was in a state of disaster. Even the precious metal superstars-gold and silver-were affected, with a steady decline throughout the year in world market prices. Perhaps hardest hit have been newly developed properties, particularly in the uranium industry, and old-line properties where historical development impacts today. No longer can such properties afford the luxuries, for example, of a long haul distance between mine and plant or continued use of antiquated facilities. Surprisingly enough, the very state of the economy has caused increased activity in some sectors of the mineral processing industry. In mill design, although large projects have been tabled, smaller projects have gone on, with innovations in design, often for cost-saving reasons, that will affect future designing approaches. Economic restrictions are impacting on mill flowsheets as researchers look for improvements and better, less expensive techniques. Other unit processes-hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, concentration, materials handling-are impacted by the need for a better, less costly product. Although at the end of the first quarter of 1982, no major environmental legislation had been enacted, rumors persist that there will be a loosening of some of the stricter standards, both in the requirements themselves and in the time allowance for implementation. The year had seen some relaxation in how current legislation and standards are administered. For example, in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) operations, there has been a shift toward voluntary checking of industry compliance with work rules, rather than emphasis on agency inspections. However, the industry continues to view environmental factors as having major influence on future operations and efforts to design for environmental safety are becoming almost as important as the processes themselves. Throughout the industry there has been a further focussing on project management, recognizing the necessity for tight control of budgets and schedules-and the systems used to effect them. Many modern export terminals are now in construction while others have either been held up or cancelled. Economics and environmental permits have been some of the major problems. This paper presents a rock mechanics investigation of the time-dependent behavior of the rock immediately surrounding the excavation in a hypothetical one-entry coal mine based on the geology of the Illinois coalfields Research in the area of time-dependency is almost nonexistent and, therefore, this research was performed to make inroads into this neglected research area. Numerical analysis of a typical one-entry coal mine in an Illinois basin was performed using the commercial finite difference program FLAC3D. The immediate roof of the coal entry was assumed to be a shale formation. Shale in other formations has shown a tendency to creep with time. Therefore, in this study the authors modeled the shale in the roof using time-dependent characteristics. The input properties were taken from laboratory creep tests performed on shale. Model runs were performed at different stages, mimicking the progressive excavation of the entry. The model results showed that stresses in the roof attained the limit of yielding. Using Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, potential zones of failure were also predicted. The results showed that the current computational capacities are sufficient to explore this previously uncharted territory of ground control.

"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property. [ ] In November 2005, Essroc Cement, part of the Italcementi Group, commissioned a long overland conveyor at their Nazareth plant in Pennsylvania. This conveyor, tagged CV-105, was designed to transport 1000 tph of limestone from the quarry to the kiln, and 400 tph of hot clinker (at 300°F) at back from the kiln to a handling facility about halfway back. Conveyor CV-105 is 8969 ft (2733 m) long. It gains 152 ft (46 m) of elevation in the first 1570 ft (480 m), then is mostly flat for the remaining 7400 ft (2250 m) (Figure 1). After the limestone is discharged at the head pulley, hot clinker is loaded onto the return side of the belt. This clinker can be discharged at one of two locations.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study adsorption of sulfide collectors such as modified thionocarbamates and thioureas, xanthate, dithiophosphate, and dithiophosphinate, on galena, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, and quartz under flotation related conditions. In the case of the adsorption of modified thiourea on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and Cu-activated quartz, and of dithiophosphinate on galena, SIMS measurements have provided direct evidence for the presence of metal-collector (1:1) complexes on surfaces. In the other systems, only the collector molecular ion and its fragments were detected. The distribution of adsorbed species on the surfaces was obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. On chalcopyrite, only the copper-collector complex was found; there was no evidence for iron-collector complex. In the case of quartz, adsorption of selective collectors was observed only after activation by copper ions.
