In October 2000, temporary seismographic stations were installed above the Trail Mountain Mine, Emery County, Utah, USA to supplement a regional network. Over seven months, 1826 mining-induced seismic events were recorded with a magnitude range of M 0 to M 2.2 (Arabasz et al., 2002, 2005). Routine event locations for this dataset cluster around the longwall mining activity during the recording interval. However, applying a double difference relocation technique to the routine locations significantly improves the correlation between mining activity and event location. The resulting relocations depend greatly on station distribution and the number of arrival time picks. We use this dense temporary array to assess station distribution requirements for applying the double difference technique at other mines by systematically removing data from available stations, thus simulating sparser networks. The insight gained using the Trail Mountain dataset is used to develop a metric for assessing the usefulness of above-mine networks and to develop a tool for expanding seismic network coverage. To verify the appropriateness of these tools for wider application, we examine data from two additional mines located in the western United States. Improving the relative locations of mining-induced seismic events highlights the association of these events with active portions of the mine. Clusters, regions of quiescence and relative timing of events can be used by mine operators to assess hazard, optimize production, and evaluate performance of mine plans. The lessons learned from this study may be used in future network design to improve accuracy of event locations at other mines.

Based on the relationships between severity measure vs. productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of US underground coal mine injuries in 1996 by mine size. From the 1996 data, it was concluded that, generally, the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour) but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). However, within very large, large and medium mines, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r = -0.43, - 0.36 and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a deeply nested analysis would be required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

INTRODUCTION THE flotation process for the concentration of ores is a method by means of which one or more of the minerals in the ore (usually the valuable ones) are picked up by means of a liquid film and floated at the surface of .a mass of fluid pulp. Here they are separated from the other minerals, which remain immersed in the body of the pulp. In general, the minerals which are floated are sulphides of metallic luster, but some other minerals of metallic luster such as graphite and some sulphides with adamantine luster, such as sphalerite and cinnabar, are amenable to treatment by the process. The importance of flotation lie's in the fact that it is primarily a "slimes process" by means of which the particles of valuable mineral, too fine for efficient gravity concentration, are saved with a high percentage of recovery. Recoveries in the mills treating low-grade copper sulphide ores have been advanced 10 to 20 per cent. by the installation of the process and similar increased savings have been accomplished by the same means in mills treating sulphide ores of zinc and lead. When finely ground ore containing sulphides mixed with a siliceous or earthy gangue is brought gently onto the surface of a body of water, in a direction forming an acute angle with the surface of the water, a considerable portion of the sulphide constituent of the ore floats on the surface of the liquid, while the gangue sinks. This is the so-called film flotation, exemplified by the Wood and Macquisten processes. When gas bubbles are introduced into a fluid pulp composed of finely ground ore and water, to which has been added (1) a small amount of certain oils, or (2) a small amount of certain acids or acid salts, or (3) a small amount of certain alkalis or alkaline salts, or (4) a small amount of a mixture of oil with acid or alkali, the sulphide particles in the ore are brought to the surface on the gas bubbles. When data points, plotted on X-Y coordinates, lie along a simple line, their regression can be matched to a high degree of accuracy by one or other simple algebraic expression (Boot and Cox, 1970). Under these conditions, interpolation is axiomic. Further, if the expression defines no more than a straight line, a parabola or other such line which can be related to some specific mechanism which generates the points, then extrapolation might be valid. However, any extrapolation would depend on the continued, unchanged functioning of the mechanism. Studies of more intricate assemblages of data points have long been based on representation by means of series (Fourier, 1811). If sufficiently complicated, several different algebraic expressions can represent the same intricate regression accurately (Hoerl, 1954). However, without reference to a mechanism, no extrapolation is contemplated. Typically, variations in the prices of minerals with time are. sufficiently complicated to render invalid any simple attempts at extrapolation. The computer, however, can be used to derive algebraic expressions which match complicated regressions and also can be represented by the functioning of a mechanism (Becker, 1984). The techniques involved have been applied with advantage in the study of time series representations of mineral prices.

The Yallourn Open Cut Mine has recently commenced mining operations in the new East Field which will supply the 1450MW Yallourn W Power Station for the rest of its 30 year design life. The authors describe the design and implementation process followed during the rehabilitation of the areas disturbed by works associated with mining in the East Field. One area of the East Field, the old external overburden dump, has been of particular interest and is discussed in detail. A discussion on the fire protection considerations is included as these are critical and often misunderstood as being contrary to good rehabilitation design practice. Finally, the development of a master plan for the rehabilitation of the Yallourn Open Cut in general, incorporating the East Field work, is discussed.

The Albion phosphate-district embraces a territory about 4 miles wide and 6 miles long, in a northerly and southerly direction, situated in Levy county, Florida. The Florida Central and Peninsular railroad, running from Fernandina, a shipping port on the Atlantic, to Cedar Keys, on the Gulf of Mexico, passes through the center of the district. The post-office and railroad station is in the town of Albion. The physical features of the district present a series of white aqd whitish-gray sand-hills and ridges, rising about 130 feet above tide-water. The sand lies in a loose body, like that seen on the ocean beaches. In places the hills have the appearance of sand-dunes, such as are seen along the Platte river, in Nebraska. Beneath the sand are found the phosphate-deposits, which are partially exposed in places, but, for the most part, lie buried to a depth of 15 feet and more. In this district the phosphate is designated as " hard rock,"

IN the mathematical statement of the law of mass action, the activity of each substance consumed or produced in a reaction is used to obtain a numerical constant which is characteristic of the equilibrium of that reaction at the given temperature. The activity in many cases is equal to, or proportional to, the concentration. If this is the case, any units denoting concentrations, such as weight percentage or mol fraction, may be substituted in the equilibrium expression. It is even permissible to use mixed units provided only that each unit is that used in defining the activity of the corresponding substance. The indiscriminate use of concentration units in writing equilibrium constants sometimes leads to very erroneous results. On the other hand, what appear to be contradictory results from similar investigations often might be resolved if the activity is the quantity that is used to determine the equilibrium constant for the reaction in question. De-sulphurization serves as an important illustration. Sulphur in lron and Steel The control of the sulphur content of the finished product is one of the oldest and broadest problems in the metallurgy of iron and steel. In general, this control must be exercised through the action of a slag, and for this reason experimental studies of the distribution of sulphur between slag and metal have assumed considerable importance. Under slags of the type found in the basic open-hearth furnace the ratio (% S)/[% S] does not in general exceed about 8. Under blast-furnace conditions, however, de-sulphurization ratios of 50 to 100 are readily obtained, and under laboratory conditions using similar slags, the ratio may be as high as 400. The fact that blast-furnace metal is much more readily desulphurized than is molten steel rests upon two distinct phenomena. The first of these is connected with the slag reaction. In the open-hearth furnace, the equilibrium in the following reaction places a definite limit on the sulphur content of the slag: S + 0-- = 0 + S- - where the symbols underlined indicate elements dissolved in the liquid metal, while slag constituents are represented as ions. The high oxygen content of the open-hearth bath prevents this reaction from proceeding far enough to effect good desul-phurization. In the blast-furnace process, however, the oxygen activity is limited by the presence of carbon in the metal and in the coke bed and the controlling reaction becomes: S_+O- + C_=S- + CO(gas) [2] The second phenomenon which contributes to the easier desulphurization of blast-furnace metal is the effect of high concentrations of other elements. These elements, notably carbon, silicon, and phosphorus, increase the thermodynamic activity of sulphur several fold. As a result of this increase, the escaping tendency of sulphur from the metal phase is increased and its removal facilitated. Previous Studies It becomes, therefore, a matter of importance to determine the effects of various elements upon the activity of sulphur in the melt. The experimental approach to this problem has been made through the equilibrium between sulphur in the melt and gaseous atmospheres containing hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. The reaction and its equilibrium constant are written as follows: S + H2(gas) =H2S(gas);K1 = -- [3] Pn2 • as where the symbol a, represents the activity of the sulphur in solution in the metal. The understanding of the chemical behavior of sulphur in steel and pig iron rests on a firm knowledge of the binary system Fe-S. A number of studies of the equilibrium have given closely agreeing results from which the activity and free energy of the dissolved sulphur may be found. The recent paper by Sherman, Elvander, and Chipman1 includes a discussion and quantitative comparison of the results of several of the significant researchesr-" on dilute solutions of sulphur in iron. The results of this study indicate that the relationship between the ratio Ph,s/p+ and the percentage of sulphur in solution is not a linear one. This

"Due to mechanical/ electrical failure in the C.C. line or inadequate availability of molten steel from coming ladle, sometimes one/two outlets of a multi-strand tundish in continuous casting unit is closed. Closing any of the outlets affects the flow distribution inside the tundish which in turn governs the quality of steel coming out. Hence it is important to study which of the outlets should be closed to have proper results in terms of flow behavior and inclusion removal inside the tundish. Present study aims at finding the effect of closing one or two outlets on flow behavior and inclusion removal in a multi strand tundish. It was found that closing the near outlet (outlet near to the inlet) increases the inclusion removal tendency than closing the other two outlets in a six-strand billet caster tundish (only three outlets are considered because of symmetry).IntroductionContinuous casting process transforms molten metal into solid on a continuous basis. This process is the most efficient way to solidify large volumes of metal into simple shapes for subsequent processing [1]. Molten metal is tapped into the ladle from furnaces. From the ladle, the hot metal is transferred via a refractory shroud (pipe) to a holding bath called a tundish. The tundish allows a reservoir of metal to feed the casting machine while ladles are switched, thus acting as a buffer of hot metal as well as smoothing out flow, regulating metal feed to the moulds and cleaning the metal [2]."

This report describes the investigational work on the development of a fire-assay method capable of concentrating, in a button of nickel sulphide, all six of the platinum-group metals present in samples of ores, concentrates, and mattes. In the method adopted, the sample is fused with a mixture of sodium carbonate, sodium tetraborate, nickel carbonate, and sulphur. The nickel sulphide formed during fusion collects the noble metals and carries them to the bottom of the crucible. The nickel sulphide button is dissolved, and the noble metals are isolated and determined. The coefficients of variation range between 1,0 and 4,9 per cent for the various platinum-group metals when they are present in concentrations between 0,3 and 75 p.p.m.

"Draw rock (small rock that forms/falls when bolting the roof and/or rib) is the cause of numerous injuries annually. These injuries result in lost work hours and low morale. The report below explains how ""Mine Safe Draw Rock Shields"" (Pans) are used in an underground operation. This report will chronicle the application of these pans in a Southern West Virginia coal mine along with testing data that measures their effectiveness. Since the introduction of these pans in 2002 the amount of reportable accidents relating to draw rock has decreased by 80%. The report below reinforces that perimeter contact is critical to the performance of these pans. In addition the strength of these products at the perimeter will determine their effectiveness. The results of the testing data outlined in this paper, along with the physical records at the study mine, confirm that the use of pans has significantly reduced draw rock falls at this facility.BACKGROUNDSupplemental support is defined as ground control that is used in addition to required support in an underground mine. Some examples of supplemental support are:• Pans• Mesh/Geogrid• Mats• Half Headers• Boards• ChannelA typical roof condition that warrants the use of pans is when loose small rock is dislodged while bolting. If the top is very scaly (loose, thin rock) additional supplemental support can be used in conjunction with pans such as mesh or geogrid (See Figure 1). Pans will provide protection where used and approximately 12 in (250 mm) out from perimeter. This is achieved by contact with a surface which will put scale in tension up to 12 in (250 mm) from perimeter of pan.INTRODUCTIONThe ease of applying a roof support system is critical to effectively operating a deep mine. Figure 2 shows how a pan is installed in conjunction with a roof bolt and bearing plate. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that supplemental support cannot decrease the performance of required support. The goal of using all supplemental support is to provide additional safety for the miner which equates to increased productivity.The ability of skin control products to contact a surface is the single most critical characteristic (Figure 3 and Figure 4). If the material does not contact the surface it cannot be effective. Therefore, the flexibility, design and proper installation of the products are critical in determining their effectiveness. Figure 5 shows the proper installation of the roof pan.To reiterate, all skin control must be applied in conjunction with a roof bolt and ASTM approved bearing plate as shown in Figure 4."

The kinetics of froth flotation and the three-phase contact (TPC) parameters are studied at temperatures varying from 20°C to 40°C. The material floated consists of glass spheres and a quartz particles with various diameters. Dodecylamine hydrocloride (DDAHCI) is used as a collector. The equilibrium three-phase contact angle is measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Scheludko method. Using a Wilhelmy method, the temperature effect on the surface tension of the DDAHCI solution is determined. The formation of the thin film on a polished plate of vitreous silica and the expansion of TPC is monitored by means of a metallographic microscope and recorded on a attached camera at different temperatures. The experimental data show an intensification of the flotation kinetics at 30 and 40°C in the case of small particles. Such an intensification is not observed with the larger particles. The cause for intensification of the flotation kinetics is sought for in the dependence of the TPC rate of expansion and induction time on temperature.

In this paper, solid bed erosion processes and the mechanisms involved when a two-phase liquid-solid mixture flows over a bed of solids in a horizontal annulus are analyzed. There are few such studies available with some authors arguing that the flow rate for erosion is always less than the flow rate for the suspension of solid particles thus necessitating further study and analysis of such phenomena. Tests were run to determine the mechanism of erosion and the erosion velocities of the solid bed formed in a concentric annulus for three flu-ids, water, a low concentration water solution of Carboxyl-methyl-cellulose (CMC), which behaved as a Newtonian fluid and a higher concentration CMC water solution which behaved as a power law fluid. Glass spheres of 2 mm nominal diameter were used as solids. The flow rate at which erosion occurred together with the mechanism of bed erosion were determined visually, while the whole process was video recorded. Our tests indicated different erosion mechanisms and different erosion velocities for the three tested liquids, with the liquid viscosity playing a major role. The first mechanism, observed for water flow, gives erosion from the front of the bed while the second mechanism, observed for the flow of the two viscous fluids, gives erosion from the top of the bed. The role of each of the parameters to erosion is investigated, whether it is turbulent flow with the turbulent fluctuations being more capable to remove the solids from the formed bed or whether it is liquid viscosity, which results in the hydrodynamic shearing force. The results demonstrate that liquid viscosity plays a role in the erosion mechanism and yields different erosion velocities of the solid bed hence, it should be taken into account when modeling flow pattern transitions for solid-liquid flows. Prior studies have not identified this and it could be the reason of the disagreement between theoretical models and experimental and field data.

Using the capillary-reservoir technique, electromi-gvation rates of cadmium and indium in liquid bismuth were measured at several temperatures. The electric mobility of cadmium Jrom 305° to 535°C and indium from 310° to 595°C can be expressed as a function of temperature by the equations UIn = 1.52 x 10-3 exp sq caz per v-sec Migraion of both solutes was cathode-divected at a rate rnore than four tiMes tHAt previously found for siluer in liquid bisnmth. The electric mobilities of cadmium and indiulrz in liquid bismuth at 500° C are nearly identical with their respective mobilities in mercury at room temperature. AS part of a systematic study of the variables which are considered to control electromigration in liquid metals, the electromigration rates of cadmium and indium in liquid bismuth have been measured. Mass transport properties of silver in liquid bismuth have been reported previously,&apos; and measurements of tin and antimony in liquid bismuth are forthcoming. Comparisons will be made with literature values for these same solutes in mercury.2&apos;3 This series of solutes was selected to determine the effect of the solute valence on its electromigration. Silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony have nearly equal atomic masses but have chemical valences ranging from +1 to +5. They are all fairly soluble in bismuth above 300°C and all have radioactive isotopes, which are an aid in making analyses. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Electromigration of cadmium and indium in liquid bismuth was measured by the modified capillary-reservoir technique previously described.&apos; In this method irradiated cadmium or indium is added to bismuth to form alloys containing about 1 wt pct solute (<2 at. pct solute). Several quartz or Pyrex capillaries: 1 mm ID and 5 cm long, vertically oriented, are simultaneously filled in the reservoir of the liquid alloy. A direct current is passed through two of the capillaries, which contain tungsten electrodes sealed in the upper end. The other capillaries sample the reservoir during the experiment. After a measured time interval the capillaries are removed from the reservoir and rapidly cooled. The glass is then broken away from the solidi- fied alloy, which is then weighed, dissolved in acid, and analyzed for solute content by chemical and radiochem-ical techniques. An electric mobility (velocity per unit field) can be calculated from the amount of solute entering or leaving each capillary by the simplified expression1 in which Ui is the electric mobility of the solute, ?mi the solute weight change, Ci the solute concentration of the reservoir, I the current, p the alloy resistivity, and l the duration of the experiment. This expression is valid as long as the experiment is terminated before a concentration gradient develops across the capillary orifice. Earlier experiments showed that the concentration gradient formed initially at the electrode changes with time and eventually reaches the orifice, due to back-diffusion. This condition produces a solute exchange between capillary and reservoir by diffusion or convection, opposing the electromigration, which results in a lower measured value for the electric mobility. To determine if the concentration gradient had reached the orifice, the capillaries used in some of the experiments were sectioned at 1-cm intervals and the solute content of the alloy from each section was radiochemically determined. A typical concentration profile for an experiment with indium in bismuth is shown in Fig. 1; cadmium in bismuth showed similar behavior. As illustrated in the graph, very little back-diffusion has occurred in the capillary containing the cathode, since the concentration gradient is confined to the upper 1 cm of the capillary. In the capillary containing the anode, however, the concentration gradient is much broader, extending nearly to the orifice, even though the net change in solute concentration is nearlv the same in both capillaries. Since cadmium and indium probably lower the density of bismuth when alloyed, depletion of the solute from the alloy adjacent to the anode would increase the density of the liquid in the uppermost region of the capillary. This would give rise to convective mixing within the capillary, causing the broadened concentration gradient. Conversely, the alloy adjacent to the cathode should have a reduced density as the solute concentration is increased by migration, explaining the "normal" concentration profiles found in these capillaries. This disparity was not found for electromigration of silver in bismuth. Both metals have similar densities at the operating temperatures, and nearly symmetrical concentration profiles were found in the two capillaries of each exueriment. This density effect was also apparently encountered when an attempt was made to measure diffusion coefficients for indium in liquid bismuth by the same technique which was successfully used to measure diffusion of silver in bismuth.&apos; Capillaries 1 mm ID and 2 cm

A combination of two factors in addition to the current Federal drilling and price regulations reduced by 120 from I942 the number of new wells completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during the year. No new prospective area was found comparable to the Armbrust gas pool, Westmoreland Co., which accounted for a seventh of the last year&apos;s drilling, and it is considered doubtful whether, even if such a field had been discovered, the drilling contractors, who have been seriously affected by the manpower shortage, could have drilled many more wells than they did during the year. New wells totaling 445 were completed for a combined footage of over 1,250,000 Dry holes numbered 131 and had a footage of nearly 400,000. Old wells drilled deeper total 55, of which 17 were found nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil Oil completions yielded an initial of only slightly over one hundred barrels from 21 wells for about the same per well average as that of a year ago. However, 65 bbl. of this total came from two wells in two new strikes. The footage drilled of nearly 33,000 gives an average of nearly I00 ft. less per well than a year ago. Two old wells drilled deeper had a combined initial of only 4 bbl. The largest oil well of the year, 40 bbl., was found in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of 3492 ft. in German township, Fayette County. The location is several miles east of the nearest oil production hut as the area that could be occupied by a pool is fairly well delimited by drilling, the extent of this production would not appear to be large. The other notable oil production was found in the Dunkard (Penna.) sand, Cumberland township, Greene County, at a depth of 1065 ft. Here the first well had an initial of g bbl. and the second 25 bbl. However, a third proved dry, and as this area is also delimited by drilling, the pool doubtless will be of small area. Gas Gas completions yielded an initial of slightly over one hundred million cubic feet per day and new wells, totaling 303, account for all but four million of this volume. Old wells drilled deeper, numbering 35, found gas. The per well average in new drilling of approximately 320 M cu. ft. is nearly 165 M cu. ft. less than a year ago and the total footage is slightly over 830,000, which is about a quarter of a million feet less than in 1942. Average rock pressure of new completions is approximately 365 lb. per sq. in. The entire volume of new production is from the Upper Devonian or higher stratigraphic horizons. In Allegheny County, the grestest activity was in Forward and Plum townships. Wells there account for more than one half the completions. Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. Marine ferro-manganese (Fe-Mn) crusts and nodules are metal-rich chemical sediments that are archives of paleoceanographic proxies and potential metal resources and targets of deep-sea mining. Traditionally, crusts and nodules are subdivided into hydrogenetic, diagenetic, and hydrothermal types. While hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are a potential resource for Co, Te, Pt, and REY, nodules are enriched in Cu, Ni, Mo, and Li, and hydrothermal deposits may be enriched in individual metals such as Mo, Ba, and Li, depending on the temperature and composition of the hydrothermal fluid. The different types of marine oxidic Fe-Mn precipitates, therefore, have different economic potential. Hence, a robust classification is not only helpful in the general geochemical characterization of such precipitates (and as such is a useful teaching tool, for example), but may also simplify the evaluation of their importance as a potential metal resource, which helps to prioritize exploration targets for deep-sea mining.
