RECENTLY a comprehensive investigation of the various sigma binary alloys was published by Duwez and Baen.1 It was shown that the following conditions are necessary for the formation of the sigma phase: (1) the difference in atomic diameters of the two alloying metals must not be more than about 8 pct; (2) of the two elements which form sigma, one must exhibit a body-centered cubic structure while the second metal must be face-centered cubic, at least in one of its allotropic forms. In addition, a tetragonal unit cell was proposed and powder patterns of six sigma phases were indexed for d spacings greater than 1.640 kx. Since the indexing, based on tetragonal symmetry, led to only fair agreement, the possibility of sigma being orthorhombic was investigated. Various methods for indexing orthorhombic powder patterns are de- scribed in the literature.' The method used in this investigation was a graphical examination of the differences in values of sin' 9 for the adjacent lines of the powder diffraction pattern. This method led to a complete indexing of the Cr-Co (60-40) pattern. Because of the strong similarity between the various sigma alloys, it was then possible to assign indexes to the patterns of Fe-Cr (50-50), Fe-Cr-Mo (30-30-40), Fe-V (50-50), Co-V (50-50), and Ni-V (50-50). The values of sin' 9 and indexes of the six sigma alloys, together with visually estimated intensities, are presented in table 1. In general, the similitude between the six patterns is quite good. For spacings greater than 1.75 kx a few differences are noticeable. In the Ni-V pattern, no (320) exists and the two strong lines (030) and (031) are separated by only two lines of lower intensity, unlike any of the other sigma patterns. However, very little is known about the Ni-V phase diagram and it is possible that the equal atomic percentage composition in this system lies in a two-phase region. Chromite tailings assaying 21.2 per cent Cr2O3 was upgraded to 48.7 per cent Cr2O3 at a recovery of 72.0 per cent using column flotation with a mixture of anionic collectors at pH 11. Electrokinetic methods were used to elucidate the mechanism of collector adsorption and correlate the findings with the optimum flotation conditions. Multivalent constituent ions such as Cr3+, A13+, Fe2+ and Mg2+ were found to adsorb on chromite surface and shift the zpc of chromite in the direction of oxide form of the mineral. The anionic collectors also imparted a negative charge to chromite in the entire pH region. The higher zeta potentials obtained upon adding the anionic collectors is ascribed to the adsorption of anionic surfactant onto the positively charged chromite surface. The positive sites are generated through formation of significant amount of hydroxy complexes of magnesium at pH 11. Complementary infrared data reveal the absence of a shift in the spectra indicating the possibility of physical adsorption in the system.

With the steady increase of molybdenum demand worldwide and the favorable molybdenum market, many technological innovations on both process and equipment have been developed and applied in many modern molybdenum plants around the world. This paper introduces the most commonly used molybdenum flotation flowsheet, together with the introduction of the flotation chemistry. Many different types of flotation cells are used in modern moly plants, and each type of flotation cell has its own unique advantages suited for particular ore and process conditions. The amount of nitrogen contained in an austenitic stainless steel affects its properties significantly. The maximum content of nitrogen feasible in a range of experimental low-nickel austenitic stainless steels containing significant additions of copper is evaluated The nitrogen content is calculated based on published interaction coefficients, and by use of the FACT thermodynamic computer program and database. The differences between the two methods of prediction can be attributed to inaccuracies in the published interaction coefficients. The calculated nitrogen contents of some experimental alloys are compared with the actual nitrogen contents obtained when the alloys were produced in an induction furnace. The actual nitrogen contents obtained were higher than those predicted by either method, and this is believed to be due to a super saturation of nitrogen occurring in the melt, which was not relieved during the short period in which the charge was molten. It was evident that the experimental alloys can contain between 0,25 and 0,40 per cent nitrogen (depending on temperature, composition, and nitrogen pressure) when melted in a sealed induction furnace, and this is more than adequate for the purpose of forming and stabilizing the austenite phase.

A short section of 230 kV transmission line was built with four 95 ft (29 m) steel monopoles to connect a solar farm to a substation through an environmen­tally sensitive wetland in the south­eastern U.S. The foundation required to support a monopole is primarily a moment resist­ing foundation, supporting an eccentric lateral load that creates an overturning moment at the base. The moment cre­ated tends to be quite large, which often results in a large and expensive founda­tion. In this case, there were two differ­ent load conditions to support. The first load condition, a 1,612 ft kip (2,185 kNm) moment combined with 16.4 kip (73 kN) axial compression and 21.7 kip (97 kN) shear, was supported by a 12 pile above ground steel grillage. The second load condition, a 1,323 ft kip (1,794 kNm) mo­ment, 14.8 kip (66 kN) axial compression and 20.0 kip (89 kN) shear, was support­ed by an eight pile above ground grillage. Typical deep foundation choices for these types of loads would include: Large diameter drilled shaft replacement foundation, soil is removed and replaced with concrete. Dr iven piles - displa cement foundation with a concrete pile-cap at the surface to tie the piles together. Micropiles - replacement founda­tion consisting of small diameter, drilled and grout-reinforced piles tied together at the surface with either a concrete cap or a steel grillage. Helical piles - displacement foundation with an innovative steel grillage system made from mostly recycled steel to tie piles together at the surface

The basic aims of the drilling and blasting program at the Mission mine are fourfold: 1. To provide 100,000+ tpd of broken alluvium and rock material for shovel excavation; 2. To obtain fragmentation that will permit the most efficient digging of the broken material and provide an acceptable crusher feed; 3. To conduct the drilling and blasting program in accordance with approved safety procedures; 4. To obtain these objectives at the lowest possible cost. The material that is mined from the pit is divided into four different rock types and the overlying alluvium. Each of these materials is broken by using procedures tailored to its individual characteristics.

"Exploration drilling of evaporite sequences in eastern Canada has undergone significant changes in equipment, techniques and philosophy since the early 1970s. The result has been the recovery of full-size cores from properly conditioned and stabilized holes, high quality open hole geophysical logs, and high quality metallurgical samples. The majority of modifications have resulted from the necessity to preserve the integrity of the evaporite deposit, and thus ensure the potential development, combined with the need for cost-effective high quality information. This is particularly evident in the priority placed on the development of non-erosive drilling fluids, casing and cementing procedures. The results are applicable to diamond drilling exploration of evaporite deposits anywhere in the world.IntroductionThe majority of current technical and scientific literature and expertise available on such subjects as drilling fluids or cementing procedures is applicable to large diameter, deep (several thousand metres) oil-field type drilling . The differences between oil-field drilling and wire-line core diamond-drilling are dramatic: large diameter, deep holes drilled with a low rpm tricone bit using large volumes of fluid pumped through a large annulus versus small diameter, shallow (less than 600 m) holes drilled with a high rpm diamond-set core bit using small volumes of fluid pumped through a small annulus. Exploration drilling of evaporite sequences in eastern Canada in the early I970s was conducted using oil-field equipment and techniques to complete holes of moderate (1000 m to 1500 m) depth . The prohibitive cost of these operations has necessitated that subsequent exploration drilling employs modified diamond-drilling equipment and techniques developed as part of a transition away from oilfield methodology. The result has been full size core, recovery approaching 1000/0 and the ability to run open hole geophysical logs; a combination of factors enhancing the collection of high quality information (Carter, I989a)."

"The separation of nickel from the aluminum present in spent catalysts and different metallic industrial residues, is proposed in the following systems: alloy Al2Ni and the mixtures 50 wt% Ni + 50 wt% Al, 10 wt% Ni + 90 wt% Al2O3 and 12 wt% NiO + 88 wt% Al2O3. The experiments were carried out in a tubular reactor with a flow of 2 l/h of gaseous chlorine and from 200 ° to 800 °C. The final products of the reaction, extracted from the hottest zones of the reactor where characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, AA and XRF, as NiCl2 y NiCl2.6H2O while in the coldest regions AlCl3 was deposited in the first two cases and in the other there was a residue of ?, a- Al2O3, sometimes mixed with some remainder of Ni and NiO. The procedure attained different separation factors which showed the optimun conditions for the recovery of both metals. Introduction Some studies of nickel corrosion were carried out in chlorine gas at temperatures above 950ºC, and suggested that nickel is not corroded below 538ºC. [1] However, in a previous work it was shown that the chlorination allows the separation of nickel from aluminum and the formation of NiCl2 was detected from 200ºC in binary mixtures Ni-Al 50 wt%, for isothermal conditions in chlorine flux. [2] Other researchers obtained selective chlorination above 650ºC of a fly ash containing 1.4 wt% of Ni and other metals (V, Mg, Al and Fe). The Ni was separated from the Mg and NiCl2 started to vaporize at 550ºC and was after condensed in a zone of the reactor above 380ºC with 90% of purity. [3]"

Keywords: Sphalerite, Bio leaching, Chemical leaching Sphalerite concentrates were prepared from tailings dam samples obtained from Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. The samples were subjected to froth flotation and concentrates containing between 7% and 14% Zn were prepared. Leaching of these froth flotation concentrates were studied in ferric chloride solutions at different Fe3+ concentrations for different times at different temperatures with the influence of other species on the kinetics in mind. Complementary to this research, GeoBiotics, LLC and Exxaro Resources have developed proprietary bioleaching technology for the oxidation of base metals concentrates using GEOCOAT bio heap leaching technology in a sulphate medium. The ferric chloride laboratory work was performed in a fluidising leach reactor. The studied material was obtained from flotation concentrate produced during an investigation into the recoverability of a tailings pile at Rosh Pinah mine in Namibia. The optimum conditions for the laboratory investigation were found to be a Fe3+ concentration of 0.3 mol/dm3 at 80°C. A control was performed by using synthetic zinc sulphide. GEOCOAT evaluation tests are performed for the purpose of evaluating the bioleaching of ore and flotation concentrates by means of mesophilic bacteria, Column tests were carried out on the flotation scavenger concentrate from Rosh Pinah to assess the application of the GEOCOAT® process for the oxidation of a low grade zinc concentrate. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the Kinetic models and the experimental data by plotting the fraction of Zinc leached against time and applying the different equations to the data. The kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from both the test regimes. Habashi (1999) proposed that if a process is controlled by a chemical reaction at the interface (phase boundary controlled reaction), the following equation applies. kCt =1 ? (1-R) 1/3 Alternatively a process is controlled by diffusion through the product layer the following equation applies: [kt = 1 23- X (1 ? X) 2/3] As the anodic dissolution reaction progresses, reaction product forms either a more or less dense reaction product layer on surface As this product layer forms, a diffusion problem develops governed by the nature of the product layer. The conclusion from the study was that the kinetics is very dependent on the type of ore processed relating to the mineral composition of the ore body.

Six underground coal mine shuttle cars (three high seam and three low seam) were used to assess visibility using the concept of visual attention locations (VALs) and an improved human eye reference measurement instrument (HERMI Mark II). Each machine was assessed in the inby and outby direction of travel with no canopy and with the canopy in its highest, and lowest position. In addition, the illumination level at each VAL was determined. Results showed that the most important variable determining visibility was operator eye position. When this variable is controlled, the addition of a canopy has no effect on visibility. Further, with eye position controlled, there is no difference in visibility between high and low seam machines. The visibility and illumination assessments found blind spots in the operator's field of view located on the opposite side of the car from the operator and ahead of the machine. Suggestions for reducing the blind spots were made. The report also included a procedure manual for using HERMI and the system of VALs to assess visibility from underground shuttle cars, continuous miners, and scoops.

A combined experimental / numerical approach is proposed to investigate the bulk transfer of solute due to liquid metal feeding during shape casting of aluminum alloy A356 (Al-7Si-0.3Mg). A dumbbell-shaped experimental casting geometry has been developed, which promotes solute redistribution due to liquid metal feeding. The redistribution of solute in trial castings is evaluated based on the area fraction of eutectic phases. In the numerical model, silicon species segregation during solidification are calculated assuming the Scheil approximation, and are coupled with macro-scale solute transport due to Darcy flow in the mushy zone and feeding flow. The model has been implemented within the commercial CFD software, FLUENT, which simultaneously solves the thermal, fluid flow fields and species segregation on the macro-scale. The experimental and numerical results are compared and contrasted to examine the effects of liquid metal feeding in this casting.

THE object of this note is to report briefly certain results of investigations on the Fe-In phase diagram. BISRA-high purity H-iron and 99.9 pct pure indium were used to prepare the alloys. The experimental techniques consisted of thermal analysis, optical metallography, and X-ray diffraction. A phase diagram based on the present results as well as those reported earlier by the author' is shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the liquidus points fall on a smooth line which meets the monotectic isotherm at 1470°C. The liquidus extends up to 3.4 at. pct In. The phase boundary separating the two liquidus L1 and L2 is shown dotted. The experimental solidus meets the monotectic isotherm at -0.9 at. pct In. The 6/6 + L2 boundary drops steeply to the 6 + La/y + L2 boundary at -1350°C. In this region, it is impossible to detect satisfactory thermal arrests because of the steep phase boundary. The present diagram shows that indium lowers the temperature of the d/y transforma-tion and raises the temperature of the y/a transfor-mation. The y +d region is found to be very narrow. Indium gives rise to a restricted y field when alloyed with iron. The width of this field is between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. Details of the alloys containing 40 and 50 at. pct In have already been reported by the author' and the transformation temperatures of these alloys are included in Fig. 1. It appeared from optical metallography and X-ray diffraction that the room temperature solubility of indium in a iron is less than 0.28 at. pct since alloys of 0.28 at. pct In and above, slow cooled to room temperature, contained dark etching second phase particles situated both in the matrix and grain boundaries of the a-grains, see Figs. 2 and 3. These particles were identified to be unalloyed indium by X-ray diffraction. The lattice parameter of the a phase reached a maximum of 2.8672A at the indium level of -0.28 at. pct. The present diagram, Fig. 1, is in substantial agreement with that of Stadelmaier and Fiedler' except for certain differences in detail. For example, they found the monotectic composition and temperature to be 7.0 at. pct In and 1443oC, respectively, while the present work indicates them to be 3.4 at. pct In and 1470°C. The 6 + L2/y + L2 transformation is indicated in the present work to occur at -1350°C, whereas Stadelmaier and Fiedler find this to occur at -1320°C. They also claim that the width of the y field is 0.2 at. pct In while the present work shows the width to be between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. 1) Indium, when alloyed with iron, gives rise to a restricted y field, the width being >0.5 at. pct In.

Currently, the interest to conditioning of cyanide-bearing recycled solutions with high-grade of base metals, in particular, copper has significantly grown. This can be explained by two major factors. Firstly, there are strict regulations on cyanides amount in tails and higher cost of detoxification processes. This problem can be easily solved during the ore treatment using the conditioning of solutions and water recycling. Secondly, the presence of other metals minerals which react with cyanide during gold leaching resulting in high cyanide consumption. The presence of copper is a major problem. Many copper minerals react with cyanide with the formation of cyanide complexes-Cu(CN)2-, Cu(CN)32- and Cu(CN)43-. One mole of copper consumes 2-4 moles of free cyanide. Availability of cyanide-soluble copper minerals has deleterious effect on gold leaching (gold recovery, cyanide consumption, tails detoxification, efficiency of gold elution and electrowinning). The precipitation of copper from the solutions improves gold recovery by CIL. The removal and recycling of cyanide allowed the reduction of cyanide addition to the process. The recycling of spent cyanide-bearing solutions based on the removal of copper and the return of cyanide bound in complex compounds for leaching process is an optimal way of solving the problem of gold-bearing copper ores treatment. By using the technology, an adverse impact onto gold recovery process is eliminated and at the same time reducing the cyanide consumption. Today, processes and methods of high-grade copper leaching solutions conditioning before and after gold recovery have been developed, which combine two ways of copper recovery: as a saleable product and cyanide to recover gold and reduce total operating costs. They are Cutech, MNR, SART, Cyanomet, AuGment, Vitrokele, Hannah and Cyanisorb. At the same time, these technologies have not been studied enough and described in literature. Data on parameters and operating conditions as well as introduction is not available. The conditioning technology of recycled solutions developed by IRGIREDMET JSC allows copper to be recovered as high quality concentrate and at the same time free cyanide regeneration in the recycled solution which is amenable to gold leaching. This technology was commercialized at a mine in Kazakhstan in 2008. The removal and recycling of cyanide does not require additional cyanide and is cost-effective. More cost-efficiency is achievable through selling copper concentrates, closed water cycle without the detoxification of effluents and enhanced gold recovery by CIL and cathode quality.

"To understand the operation of jigs and other separating processes based on differences in gravity, it is desirable to analyse the motion of various particles in given media under specific conditions. A summary of the earlier theories shows that they lead to unsatisfactory or excessively complicated formulae in cases such as coal jigging. By adopting a simplified theory of the motion of particles in a fluid, the size and duration of the initial accelerated motion of a particle falling in hindered settling can be calculated. Based on this mathematical analysis, examples referring to actual coal jigging practice show that it is desirable to prolong and/or repeat, as frequently as possible, the optimum conditions corresponding to an effective acceleration of the particles. The separation is then obtained according to gravity rather than to particle dimensions, as would be the case if the velocity of the particles• were allowed to approach its terminal value. To achieve this gravity separation, it is suggested that the suction phase of the jigging cycle be artificially prolonged and the frequency of pulsations increased as much as possible for washing the coals of smaller sizes."

Longstanding mining of copper deposits in the Legnica-Glogow Mining Basin, Poland has accumulated broad experience concerning the impact of geological and mining conditions on seismic and rockburst hazard. Methods of rockburst prevention for deep copper mines have been developed based on gathered data. Methods of rockburst hazard evaluation and rockburst control constitute a set of rockburst prevention measures. Due to their nature and location within the production process, prevention methods can be passive or active. Active methods of rockburst prevention consist of the liquidation of stresses in the areas where they are concentrated through controlled generation of rock-mass tremors and rockburst by blasting works (group extraction blasting, release blasting in the rock mass and pillars able to accumulate the stress, as well as in the roof and floor). Group blasting works as a basic method are very effective in copper mine conditions. Provocation of dynamic events makes it possible to control the timing of their occurrence. In Polish copper mines, all blasting works are made during the absence of miners in the mining fields. Daily distribution of both the number of recorded strong seismic events and volume of energy released, confirm the advisability of using this kind of rockburst hazard prevention. The rockburst hazard prevention methods developed over 40 years of copper deposit extraction are economically reasonable and offer sufficient effectiveness under high rockburst hazard conditions.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for determining the integrity of in situ leach mining wells. A self-contained trailer-mounted well integrity testing system (WITS) was designed and built to enable rapid testing of well casings for leaks as required by environmental regulations. The WITS utilizes two inflatable packers to seal off the entire casing length or any portion thereof. Water pressure is built between the packers to the desired test pressure, and the presence or absence of casing leaks is determined by monitoring the pressure drop between the packers. A winch and steel cable are used to run the packers in and out of the well. The WITS underwent an industry field test at the Irigaray in situ uranium leaching mine near Buffalo, WY. A total of 37 wells with an average depth of 69 m (225 ft) were tested at an average rate of four wells per eight-hour shift with a two-person operating crew. This represents a 75% time savings and an 83% labor savings compared to the rigid-pipe method previously used at the mine, with which a three-person crew tested an average of one well per shift.

"Kuala Lumpur Karst is a complex limestone formation that is characterized by presence of cavities, solution channels, pinnacles and floaters. Basement excavations in such geological formations are usually challenging, mainly owing to the unpredictable rock head depths and potential for groundwater inflow. Any excavation support system should have adequate robustness and water tightness. Traditionally, Secant Bored Pile walls (SBP) with struts are the preferred option for karst ground. This paper discusses a cost effective and innovative alternative solution for a particular site – using Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) and using Contiguous Bored Piles (CBP) together with Ground Anchors (GA). The site, located around one of the busiest areas of Kuala Lumpur, is a 5,700 m2 commercial and residential development. A 16.0 m deep excavation was needed for four levels of basement and excavation support along the 275 m perimeter of the development. Within the site, the depth to rock head varied from 6 m to 19 m. The basis for each solution and conditions for its suitability are discussed in detail. Some design considerations and construction challenges are also presented. The performance of the two retention systems during excavation are presented, together with comparisons versus design predictions. Suggestions for future development are also given. Advantages of this approach compared to other traditional approaches are highlighted.1. INTRODUCTIONThe geology of Kuala Lumpur is among the most complicated and geotechnically challenging formations in South East Asia. The majority of the city falls into the Kuala Lumpur Limestone formation; which is a thick, highly-weathered and cavernous limestone. This formation is pure calcitic to dolomitic in composition, having infrequent schist and phyllite interbedding (Gobbett et al., 1973).The KL limestone has a highly karstic topography dotted with cavities, ravines, interconnected subterranean channels, pinnacles, overhangs, floaters and slump zones (Tan, 2006). This results in erratic bedrock profiles even within short distances. It is not uncommon to see a precipitous rock head incidence within short distances in the same site. In most parts of the City, the bedrock is typically encountered ranging from very shallow depths to about 30.0 m. The exception to this is at the heart of the City, where Kenny Hill formation prevails above the KL limestone. In such cases the limestone bedrock can be encountered much deeper. The erratic rock head profile and the highly karstic nature of the KL limestone makes it a geotechnical challenge requiring careful consideration of suitable engineering solutions.1.1 – Site DescriptionThe site, located in downtown Kuala Lumpur, is abutted by a busy street on the North. Before development, the site previously served as a car park. To the west an access road separates the site from an empty lot; while on the east, the lot is bounded by light weight residential and commercial buildings. On the south side, the site is bordered by a road that separates it from a prominent Shopping Mall in the City. Considering the hazard involved in mining operations, statistics show that a very small percentage of accidents is chargeable to electricity. These accidents do represent quite a large percentage of those that are preventable and they are the direct result of the introduction, for purely economical reasons, of a dangerous element. The introduction of electricity in mines should decrease the hazard, and in no case should electricity be applied to the mechanical operation of equipment if by so doing the dangers incidental to mining are increased. The greater number of accidents are the result of persons coming in contact with exposed conductors at potentials varying from 258 to 508 volts direct current. The use of alternating current at higher potentials than these is quite common in large mines, but it is very rare that an accident happens from this source. This is explained by the fact that where these high voltages are warranted, proper precautions are taken, and the installations are directed by those who fully appreciate the dangers incidental to the work. Direct current is in much more general use than alternating current because of its adaptability to haulage locomotives and the low cost of installation in small operations. We are, however, coming to a more extended application of alternating current for the operation of mechanical devices used in connection with mining. Our underground direct-current wiring system is an evolution from the surface trolley and feeder systems. This is probably due to the fact that our earlier successful applications were electric locomotives, which required the use of a trolley wire. The trolley current has been almost banished from industrial establishments on the surface because of the hazard involved, yet we use it indiscriminately underground, where the dangers from accidental contact or fire are infinitely greater., This does not mean that the underground trolley systems should be eliminated, but it does imply the proper safeguarding of such equipment as is necessarily a part of the trolley systems. It is a fact that the men now employed in the installation and maintenance of mining equipment may be in many cases incompetent or not thoroughly familiar with the work, but they are the men who must do the work and, in order to do it properly, it is necessary that they be educated

THE copper-zinc phase equilibrium diagram has been the sub-ject of many investigations. Until recently, however, the boundary of the terminal solid solution of copper in zinc (eta) has not been thoroughly investigated. This paper reports determinations of the solid solubility of copper in zinc at temperatures from 100° to 400° C., the course of the liquidus and solidus for the eta solid solution and determinations of the peritectic temperature and peritectic point for the reaction between epsilon and the melt to form eta. The liquidus of the eta phase was determined by thermal analysis and the solidus by the microscopical examination of specimens quenched from temperatures above and below the solidus. The temperature of the peritectic horizontal was obtained by thermal analysis and the com-position at the peritectic point was determined by extrapolation of the solid solubility boundary of the eta phase to the peritectic horizontal. The solid solubility boundary of the eta solid solution was investigated very carefully. Particular care was used to achieve equilibrium in the alloys at each temperature selected. The X-ray, electrical con-ductivity and microscopical methods were used in determining the solid solubility limits. The X-ray method measures the changes in the solvent lattice with increasing solute content and in this manner locates the composition of the alloy at which no further change in the solvent lattice takes place, the limit of solid solubility. The method of electrical conductivity measures the conductivity of the alloys of a graded series of compositions, whereby the solubility limit is indicated by a discontinuity in the conductivity-
