IN analyzing the relation between the orientation of new grains and that of the deformed matrix of axially extended and recrystallized single crystals of face-centered cubic metals, a two-stage rotation process" is generally used where the first rotation is made in order to account for an "adjustment of orientation to the environment of strain."&apos; It has been argued that in spite of the difference of orientation, which may amount to as much as 12" (in a brass),&apos; between the octahedral plane as observed in the parent lattice and in the recrystallized grain, it is believed to be a common plane in the sense that it constituted the nucleus in the parent strained crystal from which the new grain grew.&apos; A possible source of the deviation in orientations of a common pole in the new grain and that of the deformed single crystal matrix from which it has grown may be found in the distribution of strain resulting from the plastic deformation. It might be expected in view of the incongruent nature of shear&apos; that the perfection of the octahedral plane along which glide has occurred is disrupted and that this disruption constitutes the strain from which nuclei of new grains can grow during recrystallization. Evidence for the existence of strain along glide planes was first detected by Taylor" in 1927 and substantiated by Collins and Mathewson&apos; in 1940. In their investigations, however, the deformed single crystalline specimens (aluminum) were cut mechanically along the glide planes followed by mechanical polishing. X-ray exposures (glancing angle) of only 8 min with filtered radiation were used. It was later shown&apos; that this type of surface preparation did not remove with all certainty the mechanically disturbed surface. It was felt that a re-investigation of this phenomenon using more refined techniques might reveal a more correct extent of the strain resulting from the deformation which might correlate the deviation of the common pole of the recrystallized grain with the acting slip plane of the matrix crystal. In accordance with these thoughts, a single crystal of a brass (70/30 nominal composition) M in. in diam x 5 in. long, tapered as in previous experiments,&apos; was extended and carefully documented with respect to elongation and shear. Disks about % in. thick paralle&apos;l to the primary slip planes were cut from the specimen by means of an etch cutter." These disks represented volumes of the specimen which had been extended 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pct. Copper Ka monochromatic radiation was obtained by reflecting 35,000 v copper radiation from the c-cleavage face of a pentaerythritol crystal. The monochromatic radiation was collimated and led on to the disk set at the proper 0 angle for reflection from the primary (111) planes. The monochromatic beam was aligned in a plane containing the active slip direction. Following a 10 hr exposure at the theoretical Bragg angle, the disk was reset at 0 + 1°, 0 — 1", 0 + 2", 0 — 2", etc., until no Bragg reflection was obtained. The disk was then rotated 90" about its polar axis, and the same X-ray procedure was used. The results are shown in Table I. It may be seen from the results in Table I that the plastic deformation (20 pct elongation) produces fragments of the glide plane which are rotated or tilted as much as 25 " from the normal position on a purely block slip model. In addition to the large variation in 0 angle in the slip direction, there is a variation in 0 as much as 20" in the direction at right angles to the direction of slip, i.e., <110>. In view of the results shown, it may now be argued that the strain distribution finds its origin in the incongruent nature of the slip process.&apos; The use of the two-stage rotation process seems valid in attempting to explain the relation between the orientation of recrystallized grains and the matrix from which they have grown. Applications of proven real time, through-conveyor elemental analysis technology and benefits achieved will be discussed using case studies in base metals, iron ore and phosphate operations. PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) technology and its background in minerals applications and applications which are expected to further improve its utilization will be reviewed. Short payback through operational benefits such as removal of waste from feed, increased feed grade and overall improved productivity will be demonstrated based on results achieved at several processing operations. PGNAA technology is most applicable to conveyed flows as it is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, segregation/layering, mineralogy or dust. As a transmission method able to penetrate in excess of 500mm of rock it provides extremely representative results continuously measuring through the full conveyed cross section and reporting results typically on one to five minute accumulated increments to the control room. Multi-elemental results and moisture content are used for active process control: diverting conveyed flow increments(bulk sorting), blending ore types in plant feed, and providing advance warning of significant quality changes to the downstream plant operators (e.g. flotation). Elements of interest may include deleterious components as well as target metals. Ore feed quality measurements are also useful in metal accounting, ore reconciliation and real time feedback to mining operations. Further benefits can result when combined with other technologies such as particle sorters, to upgrade diverted increments of subeconomic material to achieve higher feed grades and lower deleterious content to the main process. Measurement of elements (e.g. silica) which correlate with ore hardness or grinding characteristics can be used to moderate feed rate to grinding mills to prevent overload, hence optimizing grinding performance and reducing energy and grinding media consumption. Pebble flows can be analysed and uneconomic increments diverted to prevent recirculating flows consuming mill capacity unnecessarily. This also increases average feed grade.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dyke/stock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions. &nbsp;

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. "The following paper focuses on the developing relationship between the members of theInternational Society of Explosive Engineers (ISEE), and the mining students from the BritishColumbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). During the past two years mining students and theISEE members have worked closely in developing a student chapter within the society and onFebruary 1st 2015, the first Canadian Student Chapter was recognized at the annual generalmeeting in New Orleans. This paper discusses the benefits that both the industry and studentsgain with a strong relationship. The mining students recognize the importance for filling the rolesof retiring members of the society and industry. Prior to 2015 the school had only offered a twoyear diploma program in mining and mineral exploration methods. That included a brief sectionin the use of explosives in the mining industry. In September of 2015 students were recruited forthe first ever Bachelors in Mining and Mineral Resource Engineering program. This engineeringdegree includes a full four month course in advanced blasting and rock fragmentation. Studentssuccessfully completing the diploma program will have an entry level of technical understandingin how blasting is conducted. The students successfully completing the bachelor degree will havean in depth technical understanding of explosives and rock fragmentation. Having this uniqueand dynamic multi-level program provides the explosives industry with a pool of talent that canbe used to fill positions with graduates for all levels of the blasting industry."

PT Freeport Indonesia is currently building the DOZ mine. It is a 25 000 tonne/day block caving operation which is scheduled to reach designed production levels by the fourth quarter of 2002. This paper describes some of the issues and challenges faced by the operation when introducing a new undercut method part way through the project. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed as well as the expected benefits of the new method.

Dimitri Kececioglu (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—The idea of applying metal cutting theory to comminution and vice versa is very impressive. Among others, the demarcation of wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely Kick&apos;s and Rittinger&apos;s, draws attention here. A study of Figs. 6 to 9 shows the following: In Fig. 6, 1 point out of 8; in Fig. 7, 4 points out of 26; in Fig. 8 only 1 point out of 13; and in Fig. 9 practically none out of 13 points fall out of curve No. 2. Also when grinding particles smaller than 5x10." in. it is difficult to measure very accurately the grinding forces, chip geometry, and particle size. In view of the above it would be difficult to make a positive and distinct demarcation of the Wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely, Kick&apos;s and Rittinger&apos;s. The idea of using machine grinding to determine the comminution properties of materials is indeed unique. The following cautions come to mind, however, regarding applicability of machine grinding data to comminution: 1—Grinding gives uniform particle size, whereas comminution gives a variety of particle sizes in the same process. The fact that grinding gives uniform particle size is not necessarily an advantage because in comminution the overall energy under actual comminution is desired and comminution invariably results in the production of a variety of particle sizes. 2—In grinding, a small particle is ground off a comparatively large surface. In comminution small bodies are broken down to smaller bodies. This makes it difficult to establish a concept of reduction ratio in machine grinding. 3—The mechanics of machine grinding involve direct shearing action under very high strain and comparatively high compression at the shear zone, whereas: comminution involves direct dynamic compression and surface friction with comparatively little strain and shear. Consequently the mechanics of machine grinding appear to be different from those involved in comminution. Hence one might arrive at erroneous con- clusions when comminution characteristics are eval-uated from machine grinding results. It is noticed also that functions other &apos;than Eq. 16 which do not involve the concept of direct proportionality of useful energy input to new surface area created (Eq. 2 and particularly Eq. 12) may be derived to fit the, data of curve No. 2. One such relationship may be u = ct-", where c is a positive constant and n is a positive constant less than unity. This, of course, is made possible because data of a very small range. of particle size are being fitted by the curves of No. 2 and the hereby suggested relationship. A sound comminution theory should be applicable to a relatively large range of particle size. George B. Clark (Department of Mining Engineering, University of Illinois)—While the experimental work of Walker and Shawin this article is of intrinsic value in revealing certain fundamental aspects of machine grinding, milling, and related processes and in adding to the store of information concerning the comminution of solid materials by this particular process, it appears doubtful that the results of their research can be employed to verify either Kick&apos;s or Rittinger&apos;s theories. Both these laws were originally developed and proposed on the basis of very simple, idealized hypotheses. The creation of parallel idealized physical laboratory conditions which would be required for either their proof or disproof appear to be well beyond the scope of human ingenuity, at least at present. One great weakness of the imputed verification is that the spread of the points plotted on the graphs is not sufficient to permit accurate &apos;curve fitting. The range of particle sizes included in the belt and wheel grinding is not extensive enough to show any general trends, particularly for the horizontal portion of the curves, said to represent Kick&apos;s laws. That the milling; grinding, and turning data obtained by Walker and Shaw for both metals and minerals happen to comply with. certain interpretations of these two theories under certain specialized conditions

The high temperature (180-200 OC ) pressure oxidation (02 - HzSO4) process for the recovery of gold from refractory concentrates (FeS2/FeA8S) is simulated with the aid of a computer model. The model centers on the continuous operation of a multi-stage horizontal autoclave. In particular the effects of key process parameters controlling the autogenous operation of the autoclave are critically examined. The building elements of the model are (i) the continuous particle size distribution function of the concentrate, (ii) the residence time distribution function of the slurry and (iii) the shrinking core kinetics. Conversion is calculated on the basis of the segregated flow model. For the calculation of the particle size distribution at the exit of each compartment the population balance model is employed. The effects of feed rate, feed preheating, cooling, autoclave configuration and rate limiting regime (chemical reaction vs. gas-liquid mass transfer) on the autogenous steady state operation are discussed. Finally optimum reactor design and operation criteria are indicated.

If internal commotion can be called life, the Mexicans have certainly lived more in the last seventy-five years than any other people. To the oppression of the Spanish viceroys succeeded the sanguinary tumults of the Revolution of Independence, after which the Supreme Congress bequeathed its heritage of uncertain power to the empire of Iturbide, the only one ever established by Americans upon American soil, with an American at its head. That shortlived reign mas followed by years of ceaseless, bloody, and, to the superficial observer, meaningless revolutions—the deeper political and ecclesiastical significance of which it is beyond the scope of this paper to discuss. Then came foreign intervention, the ill-fated Austrian&apos;s brief supremacy, and the final triumph of the patriot cause under rugged old Benito Juarez, who crowned the victory of arms by a series of reforms breaking forever the temporal power of the Church and ushering in the calmer era which has lasted from the first accession of Diaz to the present day. During all those troublous times, the revolutionary ocean, that rolled so deeply over all other relics of Spanish dominion, had left almost unaltered the ancient laws of Spain, still lifting themselves above the tide, like landmarks of a flooded world. INTRODUCTION In 1982 and 1983, as part of the mine design program for a New Brunswick potash mine, series of laboratory tests were conducted on potash and salt samples obtained during the mine exploration program. Concurrently, two rock mechanics monitoring programs were initiated in-situ the short term test at site A, and the long term test at site B (figures 1 and 2). SHORT TERM TEST (FIGURE 1) The purpose of this test was to obtain a quick confirmation of laboratory data and comparison of the rock response to excavation with the data available from Saskatchewan potash mines. Instrumentation in the main drift was installed on Day 4 after excavation, and the pressure cells were pressurized on Day 33. The packer type cells in the east crosscut were pressurized on Day 25. Excavation of the west cross-cut was begun on Day 71. This "mine by" test has provided important information required for calibration of laboratory tests, as will be shown later. The test data recorded are shown in a series of diagrams: a. initial room closures, main drift-figure 3; b. convergence graphs, main drift-figure 4; c. stresses recorded, main drift-figures 5 to 8 and, d. stresses recorded, east crosscut - figure15 Three types of instruments were used in this test. In the main drift. Saskatchewan Research Council water type hydraulic inclusions. encapsulated in potash, were used to measure lateral and vertical stresses. In the east crosscut a home-made packer type hydraulic inclusion was used to record radial stresses. The convergence stations consisted of end-grouted bars of reinforcing steel. LONG TERM TEST (FIGURE 2) The purpose of the long term test was to study the steady-state behaviour of a single opening in potash. Site B was placed in a remote area of the mine, well away from any anticipated early mining activities. To assure homogeneity of rock mass, the site was placed within a 30 meter thick vertical limb of a syncline-shaped ore body contained within a 360 metre thick vertical section of salt rocks. It was excavated mechanically as close as possible to the designed square cross-section for the entire length of the room. The square cross- section was chosen in order to achieve a comparable geometry in vertical and horizontal directions; that is, to eliminate any undesired effects of geometry interaction with lithostratigraphy which might have generated non-homogeneous behaviour. The site was extensively instrumented. As in site A, the convergence stations consisted of end-grouted bars of reinforcing steel. However, in order to avoid any measurement inaccuracies which would be associated with the brittle yield zone in the opening walls, bars were placed to the same depth in opposite sides of the opening. This allowed the convergence measurement to be obtained as the absolute convergence between two points, rather than the convergence of a single point with respect to a potentially unstable reference. For stress measurements the Saskatchewan Research Council cells were placed vertically, laterally and radially. Unfortunately, due to cost considerations, it was decided to use a compacted sand, rather than grout, to encapsulate the cells in the boreholes. Due to the extremely small strain rates, only radial ly placed cells could be adequately pressurized. The rest of the cells did not perform adequately, and are currently being replaced.

The specimen of anthracite coal which I hold in my hand, insignificant as it may appear to the casual observer, speaks volumes to me and to the initiated, as it suggests and represents the entire evolution of the use of anthracite coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, the growth and development of which it is my purpose to review here to-day. During our recent visit to the Mountain Copper Co.&apos;s works at Keswiek, I picked up this piece of coal from a pile of anthracite lying in the yard, asked Mr. Edwards, the manager, a countryman of mine, where it came from, and, to my surprise and delight, discovered that it had been brought all the way from Wales, and had come out of the identical vein which my father opened near Yniscedwin, about eighty years ago. I had no idea, before this incident, of contributing to the already full and complete programme of the day; but, being requested by our distinguished President and Secretary to do so, I consented to relate here the story which this remarkable find naturally brought back to my mind.

The Omineca Belt of the Canadian Cordillera straddles the western boundary of the North American paleocontinental margin and accreted oceanic and island arc terranes. Crustal thickening of the orogenic belt was initiated in the Jurassic and culminated in latest Cretaceous and Paleocene times.Thin-skinned shortening of the Rocky Mountain Foreland Thrust and Fold Belt was balanced by basement-involved crustal imbrication within the Omineca (hinterland) Belt. Middle and upper crustal rocks of the hinterland (Selkirk allochthon) were thrust eastward and ramped onto basement of the North American continental margin. By latest Paleocene the southern Omineca Belt formed an elevated crustal welt that was at least 60 km thick.Within less than 3 Ma of the culmination of crustal thickening the belt was rapidly uplifted and tectonically denuded. The southern Omineca Belt was extended by as much as 80% as upper crustal rocks were displaced on moderate to low angle normal sense shear zones and brittle normal faults. This oro-genic collapse is interpreted to be a gravitational response to crustal thickening and thermal soft-ening, facilitated by reduction in plate-boundary-induced far field stresses.

TITANIUM, because of its high strength, weight ratio, and high melting point, became the metal of the jet age. Zirconium, because of its low neutron cross section and high corrosion resistance to hot water, became an integral part of the nuclear era. Since both metals are very similar chemically, more or less the same process is used for their production. The sudden rise of this new industry of titanium and zirconium seems to have caused some uncertainty as to the future development of processes for making these metals. Although zirconium was discovered in 1789 and titanium in 1790, it was not until 1945, six years after W. J. Kroll patented his process, that F, S. Wartman of the U. S. Bureau of Mines perfected the technique of producing ductile titanium, and it was not until 1946 that Kroll perfected the technique of producing ductile zirconium in commercial quantities. Since then the Government and private industry have spent millions of dollars each year constantly searching for new methods, with the hope that some day titanium can be produced as economically as aluminum and magnesium or as cheaply as stainless steel.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An&nbsp;EXTENDED ABSTRACT&nbsp;is available for download. As a result of the large volume and variety of data stored since its inception in 1979, as well as the basic versatility of the system, the National Coal Data Base has been performing a number of new tasks for which it was not originally designed. As considerable sets of data are used on almost every project, the use of statistical application programs has become an important processing tool.

The variation of binary-diffusion coefficients with composition in the liquid Bi-Sn system at 300°C was measured using the capillary-reservoir technique. The experimental coefficients did not exhibit a simple composition dependence. A number of tests were also made to determine the effect of variation of density with composition on convection within the capillaries. These tests indicate that the density changes arising from composition duferences may give rise to high diffusion coefficients unless care is taken to maintain a stable configuration. In recent years there has been considerable interest in diffusion in liquid metals. However, the bulk of the work done to date has involved measurements of self-diffusion or diffusion of dilute concentrations of "solute" metals. Because there are possible applications to liquid phase processing of metal alloys and since additional data may help to clarify the nature of diffusion in liquid metals, investigations of the concentration variation of diffusion coefficients in binary alloys have been undertaken. Of past studies only two have covered large ranges of binary composition. Niwa et al.&apos; investigated the Pb-Sn, Bi-Pb, and Bi-Sn systems and Grace and Derge2 investigated the Bi-Pb system. Because of the discrepancy between the data of these investigators, it was deemed desirable to check the possibility of convection arising from the variation of density with composition. The capillary-reservoir technique of Anderson and saddington3 was chosen for the present investigation since it has been widely used for measurements involving dilute solute concentrations and it was the technique used by Grace and Derge.2 It was necessary, however, to modify the normal procedure of using a pure metal bath to avoid measurement of integral diffusion coefficients over large concentration ranges. The alloy system chosen for study was the Bi-Sn system for which there are some data available.&apos; EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In order to utilize the capillary-reservoir technique for measurements of diffusion coefficients as a function of composition, it was necessary to modify the normal procedure slightly. This modification consisted of using a reservoir composition which was only slightly different from that in the set of capillaries, in order that the integral coefficients measured might be taken over a small composition range and might thereby be assumed to approximate the differential coefficient at some average composition between that of the capillary and that of the bath. It was found that a composition difference of approximately 0.10 mass fraction provided a satisfactory compromise between a small increment in composition and reasonable accuracy in measuring changes of composition. The alloys were prepared from tin and bismuth of 99.999 pct purity. The materials were first cleaned of surface oxides, then weighed and melted to form a homogeneous alloy in a Pyrex filling apparatus. The capillaries used were of precision bore Pyrex tubing 1.000 *0.005 mm bore. Capillaries of various lengths (from 2.85 to 5.85 cm) were cut and sealed at one end by fusing a 3-mm Pyrex rod to the end. The capillaries were filled by inserting them into the filling chamber, evacuating the chamber, submerging the capillaries, and pressurizing the chamber with argon. Two sets of capillaries were prepared for each run. One set contained an alloy more dense than the bath alloy and one set a less dense alloy. This procedure was followed so that the effect of density difference on the measurement could be determined. After filling one set of capillaries, these were placed open end up in a capillary holder and transferred to the diffusion chamber which consisted of a Pyrex tube inserted into a graphite block. The second set of capillaries was then filled and placed into the diffusion chamber. The reservoir alloy, which had been melted in a separate crucible, then was poured carefully into the diffusion chamber. Sufficient reservoir alloy was used to cover all capillaries to a depth of several centimeters. All of these operations: capillary filling, melting of alloys, and diffusion anneal, were carried out in a fused-salt bath which maintained a temperature of 300"*1°C. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has extensive experience estimating the cost of mining and mineral processing operations as an ongoing part of its information and analysis studies. With the increased interest in remediation of mine wastes, the USBM is developing a methodology to expand its cost estimating expertise to include costs of various remediation techniques applicable to mineral processing and mining wastes. By integrating waste remediation costs with existing USBM cost estimating systems for mine and mill operations, a comprehensive system for cost engineering studies will be developed.

"Laboratory testing, by Lakefield Research determined that, in spite of the relatively high pyrite content of the Golden Rose (GR) orebody, it would respond well to gravity concentration followed by either direct cyanidation or cyanidation of a flotation concentrate.Economics favoured the former choice which became the adopted process flowsheet.During the latter stage of the feasibility study, the Dekalb 500 tpd copper flotation mill became available in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. This plant was purchased by Emerald Lake Resources, and was moved to the Golden Rose minesite.The crushing and grinding circuit were retained and the original flotation circuit was replaced with a 400 mtd gravity plus cyanidation circuit. The plant commissioning commenced in August 1987, and by early September was processing 300 tpd.HistoryThe Golden Rose Mine was operated by Cominco during the period 1935 to 1941 processing 146000 tons grading DAD oz/t Au at a rate of 110 tpd .The process flowsheet consisted of gravity plus amalgamation followed by cyanidation.Metallurgical TestingThe underground mining areas were below the level of Emerald Lake, and had flooded on abandonment in 1942.Samples for metallurgical testing were collected from exposed faces underground once the mine had been dewateredin 1984.In spite of the anticipated high pyrite content of the ore samples, it was apparent from the success of the previous operation that the pyrite did not interfere with the gold recovery.Laboratory testing, at Lakefield, determined that, from a technical perspective, two metallurgical options existed, as shown in Tables I and 2.Note that the very high pyrite content of the ore precluded the possible direct marketing of concentrate. The process flowsheet, therefore, had to contain a cyanidation circuit for the operation to succeed financially.Although the anticipated metallurgy was excellent with either option, the 2.1 % increase in gold recovery with the gravity plus cyanidation option made this the clear choice."
