This paper presents a description of the hazards of smoke from fires, the detectability of smoke using smoke sensors, and the operational characteristics of such detectors. It places in perspective the advantage that smoke detectors have over other forms of fire detection and also provides a discussion of smoke as a significant fire hazard.

A U.S. Bureau of Mines case study of pillar recovery in high-grade ore near the Ross shaft at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD, has demonstrated the usefulness of the finite-element method for evaluating shaft pillar mining plans and shaft stability. This report focuses on mine measurements and calibration of the two-dimensional computer model and is the second in a series of three Reports of Investigations describing the Ross shaft study. In this study, borehole extensometers and other instruments were installed to provide data for model verification and to monitor the shaft. Results of the recalibrated two-dimensional model (UTAH2) confirmed the premining stability evaluation. However, after mining began, concern was expressed because cracks and other signs of ground motion appeared at considerable distances from the area of active pillar mining. In part 3 of the study, an intense three-dimensional modeling effort using UTAH3 was initiated. The results again showed that the observed effects were within expectations and that the shaft would remain safe. Three-dimensional analyses of alternative pillar mining scenarios indicated that more of the shaft pillar ore reserve could be recovered than previously thought.

he tendency of a commercially drawn cartridge case to crack in the mercury test and the relation of cracking tendency to residual stress retained after drawing were studied. The fourth drawpiece (next to the final) of caliber 0.30 cartridge cases produced by Frankford Arsenal were selected as test pieces. These exhibited an exceptionally high cracking tendency, making a detailed study possible. To obtain fast cracking in the mercury test, about 0.0015 to 0.003 in. must be removed from the wall thickness of the drawpiece by pickling, and it must be subjected to the mercury test immediately after washing. Removal of the adhering mercury by annealing and subsequent squeezing of the case in a vise was used to reveal definitely the presence or absence of cracks. Various lots of apparently identically fabricated cases were shown to possess a different cracking tendency. Machining off or boring a hole in the base gradually reduced and eventually eliminated the cracking tendency. On the contrary, shortening of the wall (body) reduced the cracking tendency only if the wall became so short that the cracking zone was directly affected. By boring out the base and pickling from the outside and then splitting the resulting rings, it was possible to determine the approximate stress distribution in the base and in the adjacent part of the wall. Small compression stresses were present in the core and the major part of the base, while the surface of the base and the adjacent wall contained high circumferential tensile stresses. On the contrary, the wall when parted from the base contained only insignificant residual stress. The conception is advanced, that the stress distribution in a drawn cartridge case corresponds fundamentally to that of a tube (wall) shrunk on a disk (base). Such a stress distribution results from the tendency of the base to recover elastically by an increase in diameter from the biaxial compression during drawing while the wall exhibits little tendency to change its diameter after progressing through the die. This is confirmed by measurements which show the base diameter to be slightly larger than the wall diameter.

"This paper traces the main advances in mine lighting from neolithic times to the 1960s. The earliest lights consisted of reeds or strips of wood soaked in grease. As man's knowledge increased, the oil lamp, the candle, kerosene, acetylene and finally electricity have allowed him to see where no natural light could penetrate. These advances in technology, however, did not come easily. Many false starts were made and great dedication was required by a few lighting pioneers to overcome the many technical difficulties that were encountered. The lighting of coal mines in particular caused unique problems, as there was the ever-present threat of methane explosions. Advances in mine lighting will continue, but these advances are only possible because men like Davy, Wolf, Marsuat and Edison paved the way.IntroductionMan's first efforts at mining consisted of merely picking rock off the surface of the earth. The sun was his only source of light. The early mines of the Neolithic age were simply vertical pits, 5 to 8 m deep. In order to follow an orebody, miners began to dig horizontally from the bottom of these pits, and as work progressed the need for additional light became apparent. With the discovery of the light-giving properties of fire, man was no longer dependent on natural light. Figure 1 gives an impression of the earliest artificial mine lighting used.Early Evidence of Mine LightingCarbonized residue from wood chips which had been inserted into rock cracks can be found in early Neolithic workings. The mines at Krzemionki Opatowski in Poland contain very narrow low tunnels that were lit in this fashion and were worked from 2300 to 1800 B. C. The wood had to burn downward to provide light and because wood burns poorly in this position, the chips were probably soaked in animal fat to make them burn more easily."

The growth and shrinkage rates of second-phase particles of various size distributions are analyzed in terms of five mathematical models. These models apply to various forms of diffusion-controlled growth (one model) and interjace-controlled growth (four models). The expression for diffusion-controlled growth assumes local equilibrium at the interface between the second Phase and the matrix and through the choice of the proper flux area perrnits the definition of minimum diffusion-controlled growth kinetics. The interface-controlled kinetics models consider the situations where the rate-controlling step occurs at either the interlace undergoing solution or the interface undergoing deposition. In addition, each of these interface-controlled kinetics models is analyzed for interface reaction rates which are independent of the thermodynamic activity gradient across the interface or proportional to the gradient. THE variation of the size distribution of second-phase particles in a solute-saturated matrix has been a stimulating topic for many years. Research has been carried out in this area for situations where the matrix was either liquid or solid. It is well-understood that the over-all process results in an increase in the average particle size, a decrease in the total number of particles per unit volume, and a net decrease in surface area. Greenwood1 has presented a mathematical model based upon the mass balance existing between growing and shrinking particles. His analysis is stated in terms of Fick's First Law using concentration gradients set up between particles of different size as a result of the effect of surface curvature on solubility. Greenwood's analysis indicates that the mean particle size should increase approximately as the cube root of time. Asimow2 has shown that several of the simplifying assumptions employed by Greenwood may be eliminated from this diffusion-controlled model with little increase in complexity. Lifshits and Slyozov3-5 have also considered the growth-shrinkage problem involving diffusion-controlled kinetics. Their analysis was extended to include the effects of interacting particles ("kinetic approximation"), particle shape, and elastic strains. These authors also show that the mean particle size varies as the cube root of the reaction time. wagner6 has formulated expressions for both diffusion-controlled kinetics and interface-controlled kinetics in the growth-shrinkage problem. Wagner's diffusion-controlled kinetics is based upon the same form of mass balance using Fick's First Law as used by others and is shown to be applicable to situations where kr >> D (k is the interface reaction constant, r is the particle radius, and D is the diffusion coefficient). This analysis also yields a mean particle size which varies as the cube root of time, in agreement with other workers. Wagner also developed interface-controlled kinetics to handle kr « D. This model was based upon the fact that the interface reaction rate is proportional to the interface area. Wagner assumed that the rate was also proportional to the thermodynamic activity difference, ?a, existing across the interface. Thus, the specific reaction rate at the surface of radius r was defined as k • 4nr2 . ?a. It is the purpose of the present paper to reconsider the processes of diffusion-controlled growth and interface-controlled growth in the variation of particle-size distributions as a function of time at constant second-phase volume. The flotative properties of the principal minerals in Michigan's potential iron ores have been investigated to develop methods of bene-ficiation for the ores. One of these minerals, magnetite, is of considerable importance as a source of iron. Study of its flotation was similar to that of hematite1, another iron mineral in these potential ores. The present research consisted essentially of: (1) a survey of the literature on magnetite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure magnetite, (3) the development of laboratory procedure and (4) flotation experimentation. Literature on Magnetite Flotation.—For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotation of magnetite can be summarized as follows. The mineral has been floated with pine oil2, and it has also been separated from synthetic mixtures with silicates by the use of the same reagent2. Magnetite and apatite in iron-ore slimes have been separated by flotation of apatite with sodium palmitate3. These data were utilized in the present investigation. Preparation of Magnetite.—The pure mineral was prepared from the magnetic-separator concentrate of an iron ore (obtained from the Wither-bee Sherman Corporation, Port Henry, N. Y.). This concentrate was slowly comminuted with laboratory rolls and pulverizer to pass 65-mesh and was then tabled several times. Tabling yielded a relatively coarse magnetite concentrate, tailing and slimes. The two latter materials were rejected insofar as the present work is concerned, and treatment of the magnetite (table concentrate) was continued by separating it into — 65 + 200 and — 200-mesh sizes. Separation of the sizes was made by first dry screening and then wet screening. The —200-mesh material was rejected to eliminate possible introduction of error into flotation

In passing the judgments essential to his trade, the geologist may be assisted by two new methods. These will enable him to (1) arrange the minerals of a selected group of base metal mining districts in the order of their typicalities and (2) compute the degree of mineralogic association between the model so derived and a district external to the model. It must be remembered, of course, that the methods discussed in this article are no more powerful than the structure of the model used and the data available. Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America over the past twenty years are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. As early as WW II the rich Mesabi hematites were depleted, ending a 50-year era of direct shipping ores that included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines and processes were being developed to use domestic low-grade iron deposits. This resulted in the rapid development of iron ore beneficiation processes and signaled the coming trend toward concentration, sintering and pelletizing. Yet even today when agglomeration facilities are treating 90 % of the Mesabi Range product much remains to be done in keeping world-wide competitive forces in check and in ensuring the long- term utilization of these expansive ore supplies in an up-until-now captive U.S. market.

A study of the rate of dissc5lution of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in acidic solutions under oxygen overpressures was carried out by measuring the rate of formation of cupric ions in solution. Effects of temperature, oxygen partial pressure, surface area, and concentration of sulfuric acid were evaluated. A sized batch of chalcopyrite was leached in the temperature range of 125° to 175°C and in the pressure range of 75 to 400 psi of oxygen. In 0.5 N H2SO4 all products of reaction went into solution except for trace amounts of elemental sulfur. The dissolution of chalcopyrite followed linear kinetics and was essentially independent of hydrogen ion concentration for H2S04 concentrations between 0.2 and 0.5 N. The oxygen dependence indicated adsorption approaching limiting values with increasing oxygen pressure. The linear mechanism was explained in terms of steady-state adsorption of oxygen at the chalcopyrite surface followed by a surface reaction. The enthalpy of activation for adsorption of oxygen was found to be approximately 33 kcal per mole. An activation enthalpy of approximately 9 kcal per mole was observed for the surface reaction. Charge transfer reactions are not rate controlling in the process.

The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. In 1999, the Henderson Mine commissioned the Henderson 2000 project - a new truck haulage level, a new underground crusher and a 24 kilometre conveyor system to replace a 23-year old rail haulage system. Henderson has been able to continuously improve in almost all aspects of its rubber-tired mining. The rail haulage system represented one of the last barriers to continuous improvement to the overall plant performance. Many of the lessons learned in other areas of the mine were utilised to design the truck level. This paper chronicles the benchmarking, equipment selection and design of the level. Areas covered will include haulage trucks, level layout, ore chute design, traffic control, road design and crusher layout.

Longwall working in Britain developed to overcome problems arising from depth of seams causing roof and ventilation difficulties. This system became very widespread particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. In the thinner sections, in order to remain competitive, the longwall undercutting machine was developed. Following the development of the coal cutter, every other aspect of the face operation was examined and mechanized as it became a bottleneck to output and efficiency. The face system itself was modified and workings concentrated with the same objectives.
