Zinc-bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as electric arc furnace dusts, Waelz oxides, galvanising ashes, brass foundry and converter fumes are marginally attractive, both technically and economically, for processing by the Imperial Smelting Process or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolytic plant. The EZINEX« Process allows the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form from these materials, together with regeneration of the leach liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarises the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroammino complex, permits the recovery of other valuable metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver. These are recovered as a metallic cement, consequently improving the economics of the process.

For the past five years the University of Queenslandhas, through its various workshops, been preaching to Australia that there was a potentially hazardous situation from earthquakes for urban Australia. A few people outside The University accepted this, but largely the warnings fell on deaf ears.The 1989 Newcastle earthquake changed that per-ception. The most important lessons to emerge from Newcastle were (i)the realization that in continental areas small earthquakes cause widespread damage:(ii)the local geology of an area is of great importance in the damage done by an earthquake.These two factors clearly indicate that, in the future, we must take far greater account of the "Urban Geology" of an area. This paper discusses the need for urban geology and its impact on seismic risk and compares that with the traditional methods of assessing seismic risk.

A whole mine, computer-controlled communication and monitoring system for both normal and emergency use is installed and operating in the U.S. Steel Robena Mine complex near Uniontown, Pa. Portions of the system, including the coaxial cable and the key underground and surf ace phones, have been operating for over a year and a half. During this time the basic concept has been modified and new line amplifiers with directional switches have been developed to eliminate some problems in implementing the loopback feature. The quality of the audio and the availability of the system have been outstanding. Since early summer almost all subsystems have been completed. The experience with the telephone system itself, the pocket-pager call alert, section wireless radio, hoistphone, television, environmental monitoring, control and monitoring of equipment, voicedownlink/code uplink post disaster communications, post disaster through-the-earth monitoring, and the system center failure diagnostic routines are reviewed.

Carlin-type. disseminated, sediment-hosted gold deposits can be better described as hydrocarbon-associated gold deposits. A new genetic model for these deposits involves the intrusion of one or more small bodies of magma into a shallow hydrocarbon reservoir or ma of hydrocarbonenriched rocks, imposing a convecting geothermal system on the local groundwater. Pyrite, commonly associated with the organic material, provides a substrate for deposition of gold and other trace elements in an environment rich in dissolved sulfide. Both diagenetic and hydrothermal pyrite may act as gold depositional sites. Thermal cracking of hydrocarbons, catalyzed by illite, subsequently generates an oxidizing environment by depleting hydrogen. As oxidation increases, arsenic sulfide minerals and barite m stabiied at first. Increasing hydrogen depletion converts sulfide to sulfate, generating acid oxidizing conditions which: alter pyrite to hematite; continue the deposition of sulfates; and ultimately develop late stage acid-sulfate assemblages containing minerals such as kaolinite. alunite. and jarosite. Gold released from the oxidizing pyrite is redeposited as free gold, and pehaps remobilized.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently initiated the Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. This is a multidisciplinary study along the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is designed to collect, compile, and analyze new and existing data on natural aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel), as well as water, and energy resources. To identify aggregate resources in the Front Range, a 1:500,000-scale reconnaissance map showing locations and quality of both bedrock and surficial sources of natural aggregate in the Front Range urban corridor was prepared by processing the digital geologic maps of Colorado and Wyoming. The first step of the process was to identify map units as either bedrock or unconsolidated material. Bedrock was classified according to type (i.e., limestone, granite, gneiss, etc.), which in turn was classified based on the suitability of the bedrock for use as crushed stone. Unconsolidated materials were classified according to relative age, with the older, more weathered materials being defined as less suitable for use as aggregate than younger materials. As a spin-off from the Front Range Project, the techniques developed for analyzing the Front Range geology have been modified and expanded to include all of Colorado and New Mexico. More detailed digital aggregate maps (1:24,000 scale) are being prepared in collaboration with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Maps from the CGS "Atlas of Sand, Gravel and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties" show the distribution of potential resources of sand and gravel and provide general information about the physical properties of the resources. These maps are being digitized and merged into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. In addition, the project is adding more specific information to the maps about deposit thickness, volume, and quality. This additional information is being obtained through field-characterization studies and modeling activities. The GIs data base can be displayed and queried using off-the-shelf software such as ArcInfo?, ArcView?, and Map Professional?. In addition, the USGS is developing a decision-support system to assist users in analyzing various land-use options on resource availability.

The acidic and metal rich waters that are generated from acid sulfate soil (ASS) drainage can have damaging impacts upon ecosystems. The most obvious impact has been the discolouration of water and occasional fish kills. ASSÆs produce these acidic and metal rich waters when pyrite in soil is oxidised. Land management techniques are an essential long-term requirement to minimise the amount of pyrite oxidation. Acidic water that cannot be prevented through land management can be neutralised by other techniques. Powdered lime is the most common material in agriculture that is applied directly to soils and waters. Powdered lime can be expensive and if applied dry it may aggregate. Since the aggregated particles of lime are larger they could sink rapidly in the water column and not react. In waters with high concentrations of dissolved iron and aluminium the lime particles may become coated with a metal oxy-hydroxide precipitate, which will decrease its reactivity. A unique lime-dispensing machine, the Waterways Lime Spreader, has been developed to neutralise acidic waterways. The Waterways Lime Spreader can produce a solution rich in fine lime from larger limestone fragments. The current size of the machine means only 3.5 grams per second of limestone can be emitted. This output will neutralise low acidity waters, however, for high acidity waters the time for neutralisation can be long. More reactive chemicals such as hydrated lime or increasing the size of the machine will reduce this neutralisation time. The Waterways Lime Spreader is also capable of producing slurry mixtures if powdered materials are required. Trials with the Waterways Lime Spreader were undertaken in part of the Clothiers Creek catchment located in northeast NSW, Australia. A small drain with a water volume of 4 m3 was neutralised with crushed limestone to pH 6.9 from an initial pH of 2.6 and an acidity of 902 mg/L CaCO3 in 160 minutes. In comparison a drain with a slightly larger volume of 6 m3 that had an initial pH of 3.2 and an acidity of 753 mg/L CaCO3 was neutralised with hydrated lime to pH 11.8 in five minutes. The Waterways Lime Spreader has been used successfully to neutralise water from acid sulfate soils. It is expected that future applications of the machine may be for the neutralisation of acid rock drainage or acidified lakes.

Support characteristics of in-cycle trusses are analyzed using a photoelastic model loaded by tightening a truss in the sequence normally used in an underground mine. Stresses in the roof at its center point and at the junction of the roof and rib are examined. Effects of zero tension and unequal tension in the inclined anchor rods are presented. Effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof surface and on tension in the separate truss members are examined. Conclusions are drawn relating to (1) the effects of tension in the inclined anchor rods on uplift and compressive stress parallel to the roof surface, (2) the effects of subsidence on stress in the roof surface, and (3) the effects of subsidence on tension in the truss members.

The oil and gas industry in Indiana in 1938 showed considerable improvement over the preceding year. Most of the drilling and development during the year, as in the past several years, was in the Indiana portion of the Illinois Basin, but increasing interest was apparent in the old Trenton area, for possibilities of further production in the Trenton formation and the underlying St. Peter sandstone. Interest in all other portions of the state was at a new peak, since many areas have never been prospected. Natural gas production continued to drop during 1938, since new discoveries have not been able to keep pace with the rapid decline in older areas. Oil production increased considerably, chiefly through the discovery of new fields. Older fields contributed about the same quantity of oil during 1938 as during the preceding year. There were 159 wells completed in Indiana during 1938, an increase of 25 over the preceding year. Of these, 48 were oil wells, 41 were gas, and '70 failed to find commercial production. Forty-three, or about 20 per cent, were wildcat. Six of these were productive—three oil wells and three gas wells. Thirty-nine wells on which operations started during the year had riot been completed by Dec. 31. Fourteen others were temporarily abandoned, with the possibility that several will be drilled to completion in the near future. A new oil field (Heusler) was discovered in May 1938, in sees. 1 and 12, T. 7 S., R. 12 W., Posey County. Production was found in the Waltersburg (Upper (Chester) sandstone at a depth of approximately 1775 ft. At the close of the year, Heusler field had nine producing wells and two drilling. The Point township area, Posey County, near the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers, held promise of good production from the McClosky lime, but offsets to the, discovery well had only shows of oil. The discovery well declined rapidly in production arid was finally plugged. In the Oaktown field, Knox County, a wildcat came in with a good flow of gas, extending the field to the east, and proving considerably more acreage. The leaching behaviour of BHAS copper matte in oxygenated acidic sulphate chloride solutions at 85¦C has been studied using samples containing 34% copper, 41% lead and 12% sulphur. Copper sulphide in the matte, essentially Cu2S was found to leach in two distinct stages. Similar to the behaviour of pure chalcocite, copper dissolution in the first stage was affected by the availability of oxygen in solution. The presence of chloride ions in the leachant was essential if there was to be any leaching in the second stage (which usually commenced after about 40% of the copper had been taken into solution). Lead sulphide in the matte was oxidised to lead sulphate and formed a shell around the partially leached matte particles. Electrochemical studies showed that this lead sulphate and/or sulphur produced during leaching can form a passivating layer around the copper sulphide. However, this layer was disrupted when chloride ions were present. A Plackett-Burman analysis was used to determine the species in the recycled leach solution that affect the leaching of copper. Under the experimental conditions used, in the first stage the rate of copper dissolution was influenced by the concentrations of sulphuric acid, Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(III) and Cd(II). In the second stage, the rate was futher modified by the concentrations of Cl(I) and As(V) ions. In solutions of low acidity and high As(V) concentration, insoluble copper arsenate formed which coated the partially leached matte particles and acted as a barrier to futher reaction.

Anand and Agarwala recently determined diffusion coefficients by the residual activity (Gruzin) method for several tracers in large-grained, high-purity aluminum. D values at any particular temperature in the range of 400" to 630°C were about four orders of magnitude lower for cd115, 1n114, sn113, and pdlm than for Ag. Corresponding values for Do and Q in the Arrhenius equation were also quite small. It was pointed out previously that unusually low diffusion coefficients within the region of a specimen near a free surface may be the major cause of such anomalous results for impurity diffusion in silver and in aluminum.44 Anand and Agarwala considered this possibility but rejected it because their penetration profiles were "homogeneous" and "yielded diffusion coefficients obeying the Arrhenius plot". Neither of these two criteria satisfactorily prove or disprove the presence of a near-surface effect. Such can be accomplished only by direct serial sectioning in which the chips ground from the specimen are assayed for tracer content. In fact, such experiments always should be done prior to use of the somewhat indirect Gruzin method where the finer details of the transport process cannot be determined. There have been several other reports of unusually low D, Do, and Q values for impurity diffusion in silver and aluminum.1"4 It is interesting to note that all of these studies made use of the Gruzin method. Also, in all cases where the same systems were examined by use of a direct serial sectioning technique, large near-surface effects were observed. One must conclude therefore that the reported anomalous diffusion parameters for cd, In114, sn113, and pd in aluminum are due to some near-surface effect, while the results for Agl10 indicate that no such effect was encountered for this system.

Laterization of syenite and other rocks in north Alabama produced material which was picked up and carried by streams to southeast Alabama. These streams deposited the aluminum rich material in the sinkholes of a karst topography developed on the Clayton Limestone. Measurement of the bearing of the long axis of each deposit in the Screamer area, along with plotting the location of these deposits on a map, indicate a depositional pattern controlled by local fractures or solution zones in the Clayton Limestone. The sinkholes and channels dictated the original structure of the deposits. Additional structure changes have resulted since compaction of the deposits by continued solution of the underlying limestone. The original material in these deposits was enriched by the removal of silica to form bausite and bauxitic kaolin during deposition and compaction. Subsequent ground water action has reintroduced silica into the deposit leaving a core of bauxite.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. The adsorption behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions on activated carbon was studied. The gold adsorption capacity of the activated carbon and the recovery efficiency were examined. The parameters affecting the adsorption of gold on the activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, the concentration of cation and anion and the concentration of ammonia. It was found that the maximum gold adsorption was about 10 kg/t of carbon. The recovery of gold by the adsorption, from ammoniacal solutions was found to be dependent upon the initial gold concentration. Under experimental conditions, a gold recovery of 98% was obtained after 120 hrs of adsorption. It was also found that the initial adsorption rate was relatively fast, when compared to the entire adsorption period. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was determined to be 15.8 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of gold adsorption on the activated carbon was controlled by pore diffusion.

In the course of reviewing grade control practices at the Marvel Loch gold mine in Western Australia in 1992, FSSI Consultants developed and implemented a novel approach to ore selection using a method to maximise financial return (the MP method*). The approach was based on improved grade control sampling and an ore selection method which directly incorporates both a measure of the uncertainty in knowing the true grade of selection units in the definition of ore, as well as the operating cost and revenue parameters of the mining operation. During the past four years, FSSI Consultants have evaluated and refined the use of this approach and have implemented customised variations of the MP method at seven gold mines and a gold-copper mine in Australia. The previous methods of ore selection at most of these operations were based mainly on polygonal - sectional methods of grade estimation. At all of the sites where grade control optimisation has been given a fair trial over several months of production, the use of the MP method has been consistently rewarding to the mining operations. The benefits include increased run of mine ore stockpiles and low-grade stockpiles and decreased fluctuation in the production grade. Most operations have also benefited from a consistent ability to improve production grade through high-grading of the increased ore production. The increase in ore production has the logical benefit of reducing stripping ratios, increasing mine profitability and mine life.

This paper aims to build on the strong emphasis that was placed on safety in the Sydney AITES-ITA Congress in March 2002. It will do this by comparing safety records from some major tunnelling projects in Europe and Australia over a period commencing in the second half of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century and examining reasons for the apparent marked improvement that appeared in the 1980s. Further by looking at the relationship between this improvement and current trends in the australian industry by means of a detailed review of the safety record for the Northside Storage Tunnel project in Sydney which was completed in mid-2000. The paper will conclude by providing a summary of the progressive approach adopted by the minerals industry in australia and summarising the current state of tunnelling and underground construction in australia with respect to recently completed projects and potential major initiatives.

PLASTIC flow in metal crystals and the changes in orientation resulting from it are generally understood to take place by the following funda-mental mechanisms: (1) slip on crystallographic planes, (2) homogeneous crystal rotation resulting from the slip, (3) bending of the lattice between the planes of slip, and, under certain circumstances, (4) twinning. This paper and a preceding one on iron subjected to uniaxial compression1 concern two additional processes that must now be added to this list: (5) the formation of deformation bands, and (6) the bending and rotation of these bands. The present investigation yields a new understanding and definiteness to the common terms so loosely used when speaking of cold-worked metals -"grain fragmentation," "elongated grains," and "deformation twins," "deformation bands," "etch bands," or "X-bands." Bands have been noted on the polished and etched surfaces of cold-worked metals by vari-ous investigators for more than 25 years, ? yet their nature and their significance have been so little understood that they are not treated in the most comprehensive modern texts on the deformation of crystals. The experiments in this series show that they are one of the fundamental processes in the deformation of metals, of importance in the development of preferred orientations, in work-hardening (since they have the effect of reducing the effective grain size and interfering with slip), and in the recrystallization process. The present experiments were performed on the same stock of mate-rial that was used in the earlier compression experiments1-hydrogen-purified mild steel in which the carbon content had been reduced to the limit detectable under the microscope and in which single crystals could be grown by a strain-anneal treatment.2

Panel caving of the Henderson orebody began in August, 1976. Fifty months later, on September 10, 1980, the cave zone appeared on surface as a steep-walled cavity positioned directly above the initial cave area. Although surface survey data revealed the development of a slight depression over the production area, surface inspection by geologists, three days prior to breach- ing, resulted in no evidence of impending glory-hole development. Geologic factors such as rock contacts and alteration-zone boundaries had little influence on the location of the initial glory hole. Since initial breakthrough, the glory-hole shape and growth have not directionally followed caveline advance because of topography and faulting. Based on periodic data, mine production has resulted in immediate growth of the Henderson glory hole.

Efforts to define sustainability indicators are continuing in the mineral extracting industry and sector research institutions. Comprehensive ‘sets’ of economic, ecological and social sustainability indicators for the minerals industry are a necessary precondition for rationale-based negotiations with stakeholders from society. These tools alone, however, will not suffice in a delicately balanced economy-ecology -social well-being equilibrium with ever shifting valuation of different variables. Individual interests and emotions and also ideologically motivated positions of diverse stakeholders are gaining momentum. The minerals industry therefore has to develop beyond the rational pro-arguments for mining in the form of sustainability indicators also proactively its ‘soft skills’ to deal with expectations, fears and outright anti-mining bias, if it wants to retain the ‘social licence’ to continue.

ZINC has been considered an ideal material for investigations of the behavior of dislocation walls in metals. It has appeared particularly useful for studies of the mechanisms of plastic deformation and the motion of low-angle boundaries under stress, because orientated crystals are easily grown and cleaved.
