A model of ore value distributions is presented that is the culmination of a statistical approach rather than simply a model that has been successfully applied to the evaluation of ore reserves. Detailed geological and physical observations based on large sampling data sets have been used to support the statistical modelling. Fundamental to the modelling process is the concept that the occurrence of a given grade value in space is a function not only of the presence of the mineral but also of the fact that it is associated with a specific trapping mechanism. The stability of surface slopes undergoing subsidence due to longwall mining was investigated to examine the effect the subsidence had on the stability of the slopes. Stability analyses were performed on all slopes along both longitudinal and transeverse sections of the longwall panel before and after subsidence. Both finite- and infinite-slope analyses were performed with both drained and undrained cases. The results indicated that the changes in the stability of slopes due to subsidence were insignificant for the cases analyzed. Although significant lateral ground movements were recorded, these were not attributed to slope failure. Explanations for these movements are presented in the paper.

Anomalous geologic or stress conditions ahead of a longwall face have the potential of causing great harm to both the individual miner and the mining operation as a whole. NSA Engineering has been developing seismic tomography techniques to image the panel ahead of the face. This paper presents the results of afield effort in which a 60-m (200-ft) segment of a longwall panel containing a fault zone was surveyed daily as the face approached. Stress distribution, geologic structure and dynamic elastic properties within the panel were plotted and compared to static laboratory measurements. The surveys successfully imaged an anomalous stress concentration that was likely influenced by the presence of the fault zone. The calculated dynamic physical properties generally agreed with the laboratory measurements.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, sawdust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blast hole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be tailored to suit the material to be blasted by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mix- ture. Results obtained in the field indicate that these low density explo- sives can lead to significant cost savings without compromising fragmentation or production.

Based on current sedimentation theory an on-line thickener model was developed and coupled with an extended Kalman Filter to obtain additional information such as the compression zone level and concentration, a corrected underflow concentration, the inventory, and some rheological information. The on-line model was installed and tested for robustness for periods up to three days in an industrial environment giving good results. Emphasis was given to signal processing and selecting the appropriate input variables for filtering. The analysis of the thickener from a phenomenlogical point of view provides for better operation, establishes the limiting operating conditions, and assists in the design of control strategies.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete segmental rings are the final tunnel lining for approximately 85% of the alignment for a 6.706-meter (22-foot) internal diameter tunnel being built as part of the East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project. This paper describes the approach adopted for the design of the steel fiber reinforced concrete segments, the development of the performance criteria for the segments, and the testing program used to confirm the performance of the materials and segments in the laboratory and in the field.

The installation of a final cleaning column at Ok Tedi Mining Limited was carried out to increase final concentrate grade in order to reduce concentrate handling, shipping and treatment charges and to reduce penalty payments. To fast-track the project a decision was made to install a full-size column on one of the two parallel circuits, designed on information readily available and utilising the experience of mill staff and an engineering consultant, rather than delay installation while a pilot scale program was conducted. A 3.66 m diameter by 12.8 m high column was installed to produce 40 t/h of final concentrate from a combination of rougher concentrate and recleaner concentrate. The column design and sparger system were by Cominco Engineering Services Limited.

During the years when Americans were most active in investigations of the many substances containing nitrogen or ammonia, viz.: 1869 to 1875, my connection with certain chemical industries led me to experiments in the direction of the recovery of wastes from coal-gases. I take from my notes such memoranda as I think will be of interest, in the hope that some benefit may be derived therefrom by engineers at present attempting to utilize the waste products from coke-oven and blast-furnace gases. An examination of the conditions governing the manufacture of gas along the Atlantic seaboard, and an intimate knowledge of the mine-products used by the different large works, naturally led me at first to consider the well-known foreign methods of concentrating the available soluble salts in a modicum of water. The result was sufficiently promising to warrant a full line of experiments. At that time, no attention seemed to have been paid to the values of " gas-liquors." Nearly every gas-works in the United States wasted its wash-water in the sewers. The nitrogen in bituminous coals varies in quantity from 0.75 to 1.50 per cent. of the total weight.
