This paper looks at the various stages of development of open stope drilling techniques. Due to the structural nature of the orebodies mined by open stoping it has been necessary to review mining methods. In-the-hole hammer drilling proved to be the solution to many problems encountered in horizontal percussion drilling.

The 66th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened in the Opticon Theatre, Snowmass-at-Aspen, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Past President, Stanley C. Shubart, Secretary-Treasurer, Schloss & Shubart, Inc., Denver, Colorado. Mr. Shubart welcomed the guests and was pleased at the large attendance, in view of the fact, that the site for the convention had to be changed at the last minute from the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park to Snowmass-at-Aspen. He stated that Joe Ward, our General Chairman, could not be present due to the serious illness of his wife, Thelma. He called on Bob Wilson, Chairman of the Registration and Hotel Committee, to give his report on applicants for membership since the last meeting. Mr. Wilson stated that there were 89 applicants and 242 registrations, an all-time record. A list of new members follows.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments using Illinois No. 6 coal to determine the effect of asymmetric wear on airborne respirable dust (ARD), specific energy, cutting force, and normal force. Plumb-bob-type bits--one new bit and four ground with different sized flats--were used. Constant-depth linear cuts at 0.32, 0.64, 1.27, and 2.54-cm cut depths were made. Both cutting force and normal force increased as the flat area increased. Specific energy demonstrated a statistically significant increase with flat area at the 0.32-and 1.27-cm cut depth only. Specific ARD showed a statistically significant decrease with increasing flat area only at the 0.64-cm cut depth. Increasing cut depth increased cutting force but decreased specific energy and specific ARD. Normal force increased with increasing cut depth for the new bit but exhibited a maximum at 0.64 cm for the bits with flats.

Geologic profiles constructed from exploratory drill holes gave basic geologic information for bidding on 4913 ft. of twin rock tunnels under the Potomac River. To provide additional geologic information for construction, tunnel faces and shafts were mapped throughout excavation. This information was plotted in plan and section so that geologic structure could be projected ahead and prediction of conditions could be made. In structurally complex areas, 3-D models were made and used to show the geologic structure. Core from exploratory drill holes was relogged and structure oriented with that found in the tunnels to make the ultimate use of the core and refine the geologic picture. As excavation proceeded, geologic mapping showed that the projection-prediction approach was useful and essentially correct.

An integrated statistical-geostatistical modelling of gold exploration data of Gurahar Pahar prospect of Mahakoshal greenstone belt in Central India has been attempted. Statistical modelling of gold accumulation and width reveal a positively skewed 2-parameter lognormal distribution fit with an estimate of mean gold as 0.84 gram/tonne. Geostatistical modelling provided a spherical semi-variogram function fit with mean kriged estimate and mean kriging variance of gold as 0.76 gram/tonne and 0.23 (gram/tonne)2 -respectively. Ore inventory and grade-tonnage relationships for a selected part provided an estimate of 3,36,000 tomes of ore with an average gold of 0.76 gram/tonne at 0.5 gram/tonne cutoff grade.

Single aluminum crystals were subjected to creep in simple shear on the (111) planes in the slip direction. The activation energies for creep were calculated from the effect of small abrupt changes in temperature on the creep rate just before and immediately following the temperature change. The results definitely establish the fact that creep of single aluminum crystals occurs by-three unique processes, characterized by thethree distinct and isolatable activation energies: The 35,-500-cal-per-mole activation energy obtained at the highest temperatures was ascribed to a dislocativationtion climb process; the 28,000-cal-per-mole activation-energy process, occurring over the intermediate-temperature range was attributed to a cross-slip mechanism; and it was suggested thot the 3400-cal-per-mole process observed below 400°K may be the Peierls energy. THE most pertinent question regarding the phenomenon of creep in crystalline materials is concerned with the identity of the crystallographic mechanisms of deformation that control the creep rate. For many years slight progress was made in uncovering the basic mechanisms for creep. Numerical simulations using the discrete element method (DEM) were carried out to investigate the flow patterns and stress field redistribution at the hopper and feeder interface. The influences of different filling heights, belt speeds and clearances between the hopper bottom and feeder surface on feeder loads were studied. Meanwhile, experiments were conducted by utilising wedged plane-flow hoppers with different configurations and horizontal feeders with various clearances. The simulation results were compared with theoretical values and experimental measurements. In terms of the cases presented in this study, simulation results reveal good agreements with experimental observations regarding the flow pattern. Being similar to the theoretical values, the simulations provide close predictions on vertical feeder loads for steady flow states, but they may show significant overestimations for initial states. When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

Disturbed zones of rock have been measured for blasted highway rock cuttings by Matheson and Swindells of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) of Great Britain. These zones have been shown to be directly attributable to the blasting process and accordingly vary in depth depending on blasting technique. Perimeter blasting such as smoothwalling and pre-splitting has been shown to be effective in reducing the depth of disturbed rock. Although extensive work has been carried out on surface excavations for medium diameter (l00mm) blast holes, none has been undertaken for underground excavations.

The potential application of flotation for the treatment and processing of a fine-particle coal stream was investigated for the Chaili Coal Washery of the Zaozhuang Coal Mine Administration, Shandong Province, China. A goal of the test work was to evaluate the application of the Microcel™ flotation column and compare its performance to conventional flotation. Small-scale flotation tests were performed in the laboratory and on-site with fine coal slurry samples from the plant thickener underflow, i.e., the washing plant's undersized reject material. Flotation tests were conducted on-site with a 7.6-cm diameter Microcel™ column and with small-scale conventional cells. Column flotation tests were performed to determine a recovery-grade relationship for the fine coal feed, which contained about 24% ash, and to obtain sufficient data to enable scale-up to a large diameter unit. A primary objective as to establish the maximum throughput capacity of a Microcel™ flotation column while operating to produce a clean coal product with ash content of 7.5-7.8%. Results of the test work indicate that this product quality could be achieved at feed rates of 15-19 tph to a 3-m diameter Microcel™ flotation column. Lower ash products, i.e., 5-7% ash, were obtained but at lower column throughput capacities. Comparative flotation tests, conducted with conventional flotation cells, indicated that a product ash of only 8% or greater was achieved in a single-stage test.

By caving a block into the workings of its open pit and using the block as an ore transfer, the lnspiration Consolidated Copper Co. has solved a transportation and sizing problem, making possible a great expansion of open-pit methods as applied to Inspiration ore-bodies. FROM 1915 to 1948 the entire production of Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. was supplied from underground mining. The sole method used was block caving. Underground haulage and hoisting facilities were designed and geared to large-scale production. Beginning in 1948 open-pit mining was substituted for block caving in a portion of Inspiration's Live Oak orebody. The idea proved so attractive that before the Live Oak pit had come into production, another pit on the Colorado orebody (now the Thornton pit) had been laid out and stripping started. It should be noted that these orebodies were not new and the entire program was one of changed methods of mining. Since part of these orebodies had already been mined by block caving methods, it must be recognized that haulage levels had been established under the area or adjacent to it. The orebodies lay on the south side of Inspiration Ridge, while the shafts, crushers, and treatment plants are all on the north side of this ridge. The existing main crushing plant was designed to take a maximum of 12-in. material, and all ore was sized to this dimension by passing through grizzlies in the stopes. In the original planning for open-pit work much thought was given to the transfer of ore to existing underground levels for haulage and hoisting from the regular shafts. If this could be done the necessity of crossing the ridge could be eliminated. Final decision called for cutting a road through the ridge, installation of a primary crusher at an elevation of 3968 ft on the north side of the ridge, and railroad haulage with existing facilities to the main coarse crusher. This decision was brought about by the difficulties of properly sizing and transferring to underground haulage large tonnages of coarse breaking oxide which lay on the upper benches of the proposed pit. Trucking over the ridge on a 7 pct grade would give a cheaper and more flexible operation in handling this material. The benches in the pits are laid out at 50-ft inter-vals and designated according to elevation above sea level. The lowest bench in the original pit was laid out at 3500-ft elvation. All haulage roads are on a 7 pct grade and a vertical lift of 468 ft was considered about the maximum economically possible from a cost standpoint. After 2 years' operation the advantages of pit mining, both from the standpoint of costs and flexibility of operation, became more and more apparent. Studies were then started to develop the extension of open-pit mining to more of the ore reserve than had been planned originally. The idea of transfer raises was again explored. Obviously, as elevation of the pit was lowered, shorter transfer raises would be needed to reach the main haulage levels. Transportation from the lower elevations to the rim of the pit by belt conveyor or skip hoisting was also considered. However, it was recognized that sizing would be required both for conveying and regulation of feed size to the main crusher plant. This would necessitate a fixed or portable crusher located somewhere in the pit. It was known that the sulphide ore at the lower elevations was softer and easier to break than the overlying oxide of the upper benches. This sulphide ore is very suitable for grizzly sizing. Calculations indicated that for ore mined on 3650 elevation, costs for trucking to the primary crusher, crushing, and delivery by railroad to the coarse crusher would equal costs for dropping the same material to the 600 level, hauling underground, and hoisting directly to the coarse crusher bins, provided a suitable method of sizing and transferring could be developed. Above 3650 elevation costs would favor surface haulage; below they would favor underground haulage. As Project Managers for the Blair Athol Coal Mine Project, CMPS selected a number of computer systems to assist in project control. The areas where computers were used were: 1) Planning & Scheduling 2) Procurement Reporting 3) Document Control 4) Accounting 5) Cost Control 6) Control of project management and engineering manhours The computer packages selected were generally effective in their own areas. During 1982, CMPS acquired an in-house project control package called GC/Cue. Project control systems for the project are progressively being set up on this system. The advantages of this type of system are: 1) Improved accessibility of information, due to on-line operation and the use of VDU's. 2) Improved turn around time for computer runs and production of reports. 3) Improved presentation and format of reports. 4) Lower costs.

Equations capable of representing combined first -and second-stage creep behavior include the Andrade, Cottrell-Aytekin, Garofalo, and de Lacombe equations along with a third-degree polynomial in t1/3. Employing some recent high- temperature creep data for arc-cast tungsten the effectiveness of these expressions was evaluated. It was found that, in this instance, the most accurate representations were afforded by the third-degree polynomial in t1/3 and the de Lacombe equation. Also noted was the fact that the Andrade equation gave results just slightly inferior to those obtained with the third-degree polynomial, definitely better than those due to the Cottrell-Aytekin equation, and slightly superior to those furnished by the Garofalo equation. EXPRESSIONS designed to describe combined first -and second-stage creep behavior must possess certain specific characteristics. At time zero the equation must reduce to a strain value corresponding to the instantaneous deformation on loading. Then in the early moments following load application transient-creep behavior must be described to reflect a creep rate which constantly decreases with time. And finally at larger time values linear (or at least nearly linear) strain-time behavior must be accounted for to yield the steady state or minimum creep rate. Some equations, such as the one based on the parabolic creep law, yield fairly satisfactory results in transient analyses but are not effective at all when combined first- and second-stage data are to be analyzed. Other equations give equally accurate results in both instances although in general the complexity of the equation is slightly increased. For example the Andrade1 equation: has found fairly general application in expressing first-stage creep behavior. Furthermore the contribution of the exponential term becomes more and more prominent as the time increases and causes this equation to exhibit a point of inflection at large values of time. With a proper selection of equation constants the curve can be made fairly flat in the region of the inflection point indicating a desirable equation form for combined first- and second-stage creep analysis. Another equation form with the proper characteristic is that of Cottrell and Aytekin:2 e =a +bt1/3 +ct [2] Obviously as time increases the first derivative of this expression approaches a constant value to suggest application to combined first- and second-stage creep analysis. Similarly a third-degree polynomial in t1/3: e -a + bt1/3 + ct2/3 +dt [3] has the same characteristics. Expressions of this type have been shown3 to be very effective in the analysis of transient-creep behavior and the fact that the first derivative has the same characteristic as Eq. [2] suggests use in the combined analysis.

The Blue Joint Mtn. RARE II area may contain barite resources. One claim, the Woods Creek Barite No. 1, contains two veins of barite of drilling mud quality. The quantity of barite present could not be determined due to limited surface exposures. Sections 1, 2, 11 and 12 of T. 2 S., R. 23 W. in the study area are classified by the U.S. Geological Survey as prospectively valuable for geothermal energy resources. These sections border Blue Joint Creek Hot Springs, which are outside the study area.

It has been found that by superimposing symmetric alternating current over the process, the rate of nickel and cobalt leaching from metallized products with copper sulfate solutions increases by a factor of 1.5 to 2.0 and the apparent activation energy of the process investigated is reduced from 12 down to 6.6 kcal/mole. It appears especially attractive to use alternating current for anodic dissolution (oxidation) of metallic scrap of refractory metals and their alloys in ammonia electrolytes permits production of high-grade commercial products in the form of respective ammonium salts using a short and virtually reagent-free process flowsheet. Similar approaches can be applied also for electrochemical processing of nickel and copper scrap in sulfuric acid media with subsequent recovery of pure sulfate salts or electrolytic processing. Electrochemical technology for recycling of tungsten-cobalt (WC 15) and tungsten-rhenium (WR 20) alloys has been also investigated. In the former case, anodic oxidation of carbide alloy was carried out in nitric acid electrolyte with production of pure tungstic acid. The research conducted has indicated that the physicochemical effect of alternating current results in a lower activation energy of electrode reactions due to changes in the mechanisms of the electrode reactions themselves.

With a growth of 718 per cent in the petroleum industry from 1901 to 1931, there was a corresponding increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry. This was first met by increasing numbers of college graduates from the old established courses in chemistry, geology and engineering. However, a need began to be felt for scientists and engineers specially trained for the petroleum industry. In 1912 the University of Pittsburgh established the first department in any university in the world that offered major work in petroleum engineering and petroleum geology. In Europe, the first major work in petroleum engineering was offered in England in 1913 at the University of Birmingham. The University of California and Stanford University offered major work in petroleum engineering in 1915. Since that time at least 10 other American universities and colleges have offered major work and at least 12 others are now offering some courses dealing with petroleum and the petroleum industry.

The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.
