It seems to me that uniformity of mining law in North America must of necessity start with uniformity in each country. I understand that the Provinces of Canada have the right to make their own individual laws and conditions, to prescribe the terms under which the prospector or the applicant for mineral titles may secure the same. That is not true of the states in the United States. In this country, the Federal Mining Law was made applicable to the public domain, which, at the time of the adoption of this Act in 1872, was chiefly west of the Missouri River; it is impossible to locate a mining claim in most of our eastern states. It is true, however, that there are certain holdover rights, mostly obsolete, arising from the fact that at the time of the formation of the Confederation of States, the land that belonged to each state became the property of the Federal Government. I am not quite correc-t in that, it was sometime after the adoption of our Constitution, I think it was 1778, but those rights were largely, by agreement, surrendered to the Federal Government; but it is a fact that the great acquisitions of territory in the West, with the single exception of Texas, were of domain that came into the possession of the Federal Government and our Federal Mining Law applies to that territory. No state has the right to (by legislative enactment) enlarge upon the rights given by the Federal Mining Law, governing the acquisition of mining claims in its territory, within its boundaries. Each state, however, may, and some of them do, limit somewhat the rights given to the prospector. For instance, the Federal Mining Law provides that a claim may be taken, staked upon the public domain, of 600 ft. in width and 1500 ft. in length. Some of the states, like South Dakota and Colorado, have at times said "that is an excessive amount of land for a single mining claim; we will therefore limit it to 300 ft. or 200 ft. in width." There is, therefore, not any direct and immediate need for uniformity of mining laws in the United States, such as there might possibly be if it were considered at all desirable upon the whole in Canada. The initiation of mining rights under the Federal Mining Act is the act of discovery of valuable mineral in place, referring now to the lode mining claims, but the same is true of the placer claim. For many pu@oses uniform strength is desired over a long temperature range, coupled to a band of softness at the hot end for easy shaping. Various types of material fulfill such a requirement to different degrees, depending on the regularity of their atomic structure. In long-chain polymers and vitreous glasses the irregular structure leads to a steep temperature dependence of deformation resistance and the temperature band between the hard and brittle condition and the soft condition is only about 100 C. In crystals and especially metals the atomically regular structure leads to a much smaller sensitivity over a wide temperature band, thus approaching the ideal behavim. The reason for this insensitivity is that the regular crystalline structure deforms by the movement of dislocations and the elastic interactions of dislocations in- PLASTICS, GLASSES, AND CRYSTALS The ease or otherwise of deformation varies with temperature much more in some substances than in others. This is an important matter when service over a wide temperature range is needed, especially volve energies of several hundred electron volts compared with which the energy of thermal agitation is insignificant. However, temperature affects a metal's defmmation resistance through its influence on the annealing, m coarsening, of the three-dimensional dislocation network. This coarsening is a phenomenon very similar to grain growth and ideas about grain growth can be applied to it. Taking into account also the temperature dependence of the glide resistance from alloying additions, a reasonable account can be given of the overall effect of temperature on deformation strength and of stress and grain size on deformation rake. Special structures me described. some arising from these ideas and as yet untried, which may benefit metals and polymers but not ni-treous glasses. when in addition a degree of softness suitable for shaping is required at some stage. It would be nice if one could write on this subject in as much detail about plastics, glasses, and so forth, as about metals, but there has been far more study of this matter in metals than in other substances, which is one reason why most of this paper concerns metals. However, in Fig. 1 there are shown the deformation strengths of several nonmetallic substances as a function of temperature. Explosive fracturing of metal is usually considered to be an imprecise process but, by careful consideration of shock-wave geometry, precise results are obtainable. The limited development of such charges is attributed to experimental difficulties. A charge configuration has now been devised in which a prismatic wave-shaping element is used to resolve the shock-waves entering a target plate into two convergent components. The extreme pressure caused by their collision initiates a diamond fracture in the proximal target face, and coincidence of reflected tension waves generates a fracture in the distal face. A combination of these effects breaks the target. An embodiment of S.R.T. is described which is flexible, magnetic and contains no cavities.

Anglo Platinum?s Polokwane Smelter is situated outside Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province in South Africa. A single 168 MVA six-in-line rectangular furnace smelts dry concentrates containing platinum group metals (PGMs). Furnace energy consumption since commissioning is presented, showing that energy efficiency improves as capacity utilization increases. An energy balance for the furnace is outlined, indicating the measured or calculated energy losses from the hearth and side-wall cooling, the copper coolers, the upper furnace walls and roof, and the energy losses in off-gas, matte, and slag. From the energy balance, the potential to improve energy efficiency by controlling the slag temperature, the slag level, and the off-gas volume is derived. Furthermore, the impact on the energy balance of different concentrate types is discussed, as well as the potential impact of replacing all upper waffle coolers by plate cooler panels.

The nature and comparative features of anthracite and bituminous coals have been discussed by the writer in two previous papers.' Although this paper is offered as a further contribution to the subject, it seems desirable at the outset to repeat some of the descriptive matter of the early works in order to show the actual connection between various constituents of both coals and the new photomicrographs and other physical and chemical properties. Structure of Anthracite and Bituminous Coals A lump of bituminous coal (Fig. 1) is readily seen to be composed of layers differing from one another in texture, luster and thickness. There are, in general, three kinds of layers, although only two are usually seen. One is deep black, very compact, and has a bright luster; another is grayish black, has a duller luster and is less compact; the third is black, dull and porous in appearance, but because of its thinness is not often seen except on parting surfaces. This last material is charcoal. American students of coal morphology use the names anthraxylon, attritus, and fusain to designate these three constituents of laminated coal. Anthraxylon refers to the brightest bands, attritus to the duller layers, and fusain to the charcoal. Close examination of a lump of bituminous coal shows the brightest deep black layers to be embedded in the duller grayish black laminae. These deep black layers are lens-shaped and vary in thickness from thin sheets to over half an inch. They are often so continuous through the lump that their tapering terminae are not noticeable. On careful examination the duller grayish black laminae (Fig. 7) are seen to contain many very thin sheets of this very bright black material. The charcoal

Sulfur is the 13th most common element in the earth's crust, constituting approximately 0.05% of the total. It occurs naturally in its elemental form, as metallic sulfides, nonmetallic sulfates, and as combined or free sulfur in natural gas, crude oil, and coal. COMMERCIAL SOURCES Most of the sulfur that is consumed is converted into sulfuric acid before use; therefore, it is not necessary to recover sulfur solely in its elemental form. Processes for recovery are peculiar- to the types of reserves being processed. The major commercial processes as well as the general geographic locations where the appropriate reserves occur are listed in the following. It should be noted that the sulfur values may be recovered as the primary product, as a coproduct with other materials, or as a byproduct. Elemental Sulfur 1) Frasch mining is used for subterranean deposits of elemental sulfur around the Gulf Coast areas of the United States and Mexico. Generally, but not exclusively, such deposits are located in salt dome structure. 2) Autoclaving, flotation, or solvent extraction of surface deposits of elemental sulfur is practiced throughout the world. 3) Extraction and conversion of hydrogen sulfide from sour natural gas into elemental sulfur is done principally in Canada, France, and the United States. 4) Conversion of metallic sulfides from pyrites into elemental sulfur is done via the Outokumpu process in Finland. 5) Catalytic cracking and hydrocracking of sulfur-bearing crude oils to produce elemental sulfur is done worldwide. Desulfurization of refined petroleum products also yields elemental sulfur. 6) Recovery of elemental sulfur from sulfur-bearing oil sands (Athabasca tar sands) has been initiated in Canada. 7) As of this writing (1970), a plant has been constructed for the thermal decomposition of gypsum to produce elemental sulfur in the United States. Sulfuric Acid Sulfur values in the form of sulfuric acid are recovered via: 1) Recovery from smelter gases throughout the world. 2) Roasting of pyrites throughout the world with iron sinters as a byproduct. 3) Roasting of anhydrite with cement as a coproduct, primarily in Europe. 4) Processes currently are being developed for recovery of sulfuric acid from combustion gases resulting from the burning of high-sulfur-content fuel. Other Sulfur values also are recovered from waste products which normally occur in highly industrialized areas. Some examples are: coke-oven gases, sludge sulfuric acid, and pickling liquors (ferrous sulfate).

Consolidated Gold Fields Limited published annually an excellent reference, GOLD 1978, GOLD 1979, giving the Supply and Demand for Gold, Recent Developments and Prospects, Soviet Gold Production, etc. This outstanding reference is authored by Christopher Glynn, Investment Department, London, Great Britain. The 1978 Report marked the tenth anniversary of Gold Field's review of world gold market developments; and from it and the 1979 report, the following information was derived. The recovery of gold is widespread in the Soviet Union. Originally, gold was mined principally in the Urals, but in the last few years several major deposits have been discovered in the southwestern areas of the Soviet Union. One of the most dramatic discoveries has been the Muruntau deposit in Western Uzbekestan. This deposit, discovered in 1958, is reported to be the largest and among the lowest cost producers in the Soviet Union. It is located in Armenia, approximately 750 km (465 miles) northeast of the Iran-Afghanistan border, lying in the center of the Kyzylkurn (Red Sands) desert at the foot of Muruntau Mountain. Free gold occurs in both fine and coarse size in quartz veins up to 20 m (66 ft) thick associated with a small percentage of sulfides, mainly arsenopyrite. The ore zone constitutes a large gold-enriched stock work of about 4 sq krn (1.5 sq miles). The development of Muruntau was a major undertaking with open -pit development and construction of the mill and refinery complex started early in 1967, and the first gold bar poured in mid-1969. At the end of the first construction stage in 1970, the mill building was an imposing structure about 38 m (125 ft) high and 330 (1,080 ft) in length housing, probably, 11 parallel milling circuits. The first construction stage also included six 50 m (165 ft) diameter thickeners and 30 Pachuca tanks. The original mill complex was tripled in size after large additional gold reserves were discovered at a depth of 600 m (1,970 ft); and the deposit is now being exploited by both open- pit and underground workings. Ore is ground in semi-autogenous mills with the free gold being recovered into a high-grade concentrate on shaking tables. Table tailings are purnped to duplex spiral classifiers in closed circuit with the grinding mills. Classifier overflow is then thickened before being transferred to the Pachuca building where cyanidation takes place. An ion exchange resin is then added in a countercurrent

Tellurium in raw slime has recently been recovered as copper telluride in Onahama Smelter & Refinery. The slime is decopperized with sulfuric acid solution in conventional leaching tanks. The pregnant leach solution containing 45 g/l of copper and 1 g/l of tellurium is introduced to a copper telluride recovering reactor. The tail solution from the reactor containing less than 20 mg/l of tellurium is recycled directly to circulation tanks of copper electrolysis. The impurities of the product copper telluride is kept below 1% without any purification.

THE present paper is concerned with typical temperature values experienced in lamp-filament measurements as made on regular factory and engineering products. It deals with the relations existing between temperature, efficiency, lamp size, and life of incandescent lamps, insofar as they affect the rating of the product and its use by the individual consumer. The temperatures measured lie in that range covered only by the general method of radiation pyrometry, as opposed to direct methods used under contact conditions. The range of temperatures ordinarily experienced extends from about 2125° K., for the now almost extinct carbon-filament lamp, to 3200° K. for the comparatively new tungsten-filament motion-picture lamp. Most of the more common sizes of tungsten lamps have temperatures ranging from 2500 to 3000° K. Because of the high temperatures involved and the relatively small area of the sources used, we are practically restricted to two methods of measurement, both of which depend on the light radiated front the filament. The first and more usual method is that of the Morse pyrometer, dependent on the variation in temperature of the amount of light of a given color range yielded by the filament. In this case, the measured temperature is that of a small part of the incandescent body, that is, the part which is focused on the comparison filament. The second method, known usually in this country as that of "color match" and in England as "color-identity" is based on the color of the total light yielded by the filament, the comparison being facilitated by the use of an ordinary photometer- head. A more definite idea of the temperatures involved in the case of filaments of various vacuum and gas-filled lamps, is given by Fig. 1. The size of the lamp, in watts, is plotted along the horizontal axis and the temperature of the filament is plotted along the vertical axis. The lamps concerned are regular product, rated for 1000 hr. life. The temperature values for the old 16-candlepower carbon lamp and the new motion-picture lamp are shown by the cross and circle respectively.

Qualitative and interpretive information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging, and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system provides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data. A case study using a large reference database is presented; the indicator conditioned estimates have a smaller conditional bias and a smaller error variance than the ordinary kriging estimates. The results also showed that the indicator conditioned estimator is more efficient for selection in mining.

Mining is one of the oldest profession and second after agriculture. Unfortunately Mining is not so familiar in the society. Due to lack of recognition in the society, existence of mines in remote places and in dusty and humid working conditions, led the poor response for mining engineering. Mining engineering programs have been increasingly less attractive to the student population over the years due to negative image of mining industry. After graduating in mining engineering, there is not much problem of employment at present. In the last 10 to 15years most of the mining engineering graduates have joined software industry. Even those joined in mining industry also left with in 2 years of service. The main reason for this is not being satisfied with job, it is not only working conditions but also work environment, work culture, remote location of the mines etc. Though many were trying to leave mining profession, the recent economic slow down has prompted some of them to incline towards job safety and retained to mining job. At this juncture a systematic study was taken up to analyze the job satisfaction of mining engineers in India.

L. A. ROE*—This paper is one of great value to the iron ore industry. The Humphreys spiral is a relatively new tool and gives promise of being quite useful in solving certain problems of iron ore beneficiation. Spirals have been tested on a martite ore at the Benson mine of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. in northern New York State. Our New York ore is considerably different, physically and mineralogically, than the one mentioned in this paper, and contains only 25 pct iron. This ore can be processed on spirals to give a concentrate containing 62 pct iron with an 85 pct recovery. On our particular ore we found operating difficulties when the spiral feed was coarser than 14 mesh. These were chiefly due to excessive "build-up" of locked middlings in the spiral circuit. In extreme cases these middling particles would accumulate to such an extent that the plant had to be shut down and the spiral surge tanks cleaned out. It is interesting to note that there exists a close relationship between the results of tabling a given iron ore and concentration of this same ore on Humphreys spirals. The size range of the ore must, of course, be within those limits acceptable to spiral concentration. Comparative tests on several of our mar-tite ores showed tabling results to be the same as spiral results. The authors make no mention of the use of a tailing stream splitter (now available from the spiral manufacturer) which is a useful tool in studying iron losses in the tailings stream. 011 our particular martite ore we found a considerable accumulation of fine-sized iron ore particles in the outside portion of the tailings stream. This fraction may be amenable to further treatment. E. H. ROSE*—The authors have concluded an interesting piece of work and this paper is an excellent factual account of a rapid and somewhat unusual transi-;ion in practice in the plant described. Perhaps it was modesty on their part which caused them so casually to limit to one sentence the fact that "several other methods of concentration on the fine ores representative of the Hill Trumbull group . . . failed to produce consistently an acceptable grade and recovery of finished product." The fact is that they were confronted by a difficult mineral-dressing problem and they are to be congratulated on their courage and persistence in staying with it until a satisfactory solution was evolved. A visitor to the plant might have been mildly astonished, as I was, to see one type of concentrator handling that part of the load early in the 1947 season, its experimental replacement by another a little later, and then in 1948 to see that both types had simply disappeared and their place taken by the spirals which were operating as placidly as though they had been there all the time. In working out economic methods of beneficiating Alabama red ore, most of which development is still ahead of us, it is likely that we also will pass through a period of successive disappointments, for we too have a problem where it is next to impossible either to "guess 'end right in the first place," or, because full-scale operating cost is such an important factor, to lay the ultimate answer on the line in advance by means of laboratory experimentation. Iron ore being what it is instead of what it used to be, it is encouraging to have the example the authors have given us today that a tough nut that will not crack on the first blow or the second is apt to do so on the third or fourth.

"Difficulties in the flotation of Inca's ultramafic ores at the Thompson Mill are related to the presence of serpentine slimes and some floatable rock minerals. Serpentine slime coatings depress pentlandite recovery while rock flotation decreases concentrate grade. Carboxy methyl cellulose (CMG) has been shown to promote sulphide flotation and to reject floatable rock.To improve ultramafic ore flotation, CMC addition in the rougher stage was studied in a laboratory scale column. Batch tests were conducted in the lab and followed up with continuous testwork at the Thompson mill. At 0.5-1.0 g CMG per kg ore, pentlandite recovery is increased by 5-10% in rougher flotation, pentlandite/rock selectivity is improved and pentlandite/pyrrhotite selectivity is unaffected.IntroductionAt Inca's Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson Mill, primarily by froth flotation. The sulfide ores are contained within the Thompson Nickel Belt and currently there are two operating mines, Thompson and Birchtree. Sulphide mineralization in both mines is simple, consisting of pyrrhotite (both monoclinic and hexagonal), pentlandite, and minor chalcopyrite. Both deposits are hosted by metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks with variable ultramafic rock associations. Ultramafic rocks are mostly serpentinites: magnesium rich rocks composed predominately of serpentine. There is little serpentinite at the Thompson mine, while mineralization at Birchtree is closely associated with significant ultramafic rocks.Excellent recoveries of pentlandite (Pn) and chalcopyrite (Cp) are achieved at the Thompson Mill when processing ore from the Thompson mine. In treating the ultramafic associated Birchtree ore, nickel recoveries are some 6 to 8% below that achieved with Thompson ore. Furthermore, a typical concentrate from Birchtree ore contains more rock and is higher in MgO content. The presence of rock in the concentrate is related to free floatable rock species as well as rock locked with sulfides. The reason for the difference in flotation responses of these two ores has been the subject of on-going re-search."

Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. The other half comes from brines and playa lakes in California, Texas, and Wyoming. Salt cake is used mainly for papermaking. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Appreciation is expressed to William B. "Highvale Mine, located at Wabamun, Alberta, produces thermal coal for TransAIta's Keephills and Sundance generating plants. Overburden stripping in the mine is conducted by draglines which normally operate on top of the overburden bench. In certain areas oj the mine, however, these overburden benches are susceptible to slope failure. In these areas, due to safety considerations, the draglines are utilized in the less productive chop-cutting mode, supplemented by mobile equipment where the bench height exceeds the dragline chop-cutting limit. This paper proposes maintaining the draglines in their normal digging mode through areas of unstable or jailed overburden, by utilizing a dragline carried toe buttress 10 ensure adequate bench stability. The data requirements and methods of slope analysis to design a toe buttress across an unstable highwall area are examined in rigorous detail. INTRODUCTIONLocationHighvale Mine is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated under contract. It is Canada's largest coal mine with an annual coal production in excess of II million tonnes. The mine is located approximately 80 km west of Edmonton on the south shore of Wabamum Lake (Fig. I) and production is currently provided by three pits 02. 03 and 04 (Fig. 2). The entire coal production is consumed at the nearby Sundance and Keephills power generating plants.ScopeThe mining operation at Highvale Mine has had occasional slope stability failures of its high wall overburden bench. This paper examines one such failure which occurred in the summer of 1983 at Pit 03. In addition to an investigation of the failure, Terracon was asked to recommend mine operation procedures which would minimize the impact of these slide zones on dragline productivity. A method of removing the failed material by utilizing the dragline in its normal digging mode is designed. The method's advantages and disadvantages as well as the required support procedures are reviewed."

The theoretical background for calculating friction factors for flow in gas wells by two methods is presented. The first method, requiring pressures, temperatures and specific volumes of the flowing fluids at various depths in the well bore, shows how the mechanical-energy-balance equation for vertical flow may be graphically integrated over the actual path of the expansion of the fluid in the well. Thus, assumptions regarding the effective temperature and effective compressibility of the fluid in the well are avoided. The second method presents an equation derived on a basis of the assumptions that both the temperature and the compressibility are fixed at constant effective values throughout the flowing column of gas. The second method provides a convenient and practical means of calculating friction factors for gas wells and lends itself readily to the problem of calculating subsurface pressures in a flowing gas well. The application of both methods to actual test data taken on a flowing gas well is illustrated in the paper. INTRODUCTION As friction factors for the producing strings of flowing gas wells cannot be measured directly and must be calculated from flow-test data, study of the methods of arriving at friction factors is a necessary adjunct to understanding the characteristics of flow in gas wells. There are two methods of calculating friction factors for gas wells; they differ from one another mainly in the treatment of the path of expansion of the fluid in the well. In the flowing well, the energy consumed in lifting the fluid from the bottom to the top of the well, overcoming the friction between the moving fluid and the pipe walls, and increasing the velocity of the fluid as it flows up the producing string is supplied by expansion of the flowing fluid. The available energy is determined by the expansion of the fluid that follows a path determined by conditions of temperature, compressibility and phase changes of the fluid during the expansion. A means of evaluating the available energy in a flowing gas well and determining the proportion of the available energy used in lifting the gas, overcoming friction, and increasing the velocity of flow is developed in this report. Knowing how much energy is consumed in overcoming friction makes it possible to calculate friction factors for given flow rates in given sizes of pipes in wells. Friction coefficients, as used in this report, are dimension- less proportionality multipliers used in the flow equations to satisfy the equality between the terms of the equation. The square root of the reciprocal of the friction coefficient is termed the friction factor. It has been known for many years that friction factors may be computed directly from mathematical formulas based on certain assumptions regarding the temperature and compressibility of the moving fluid in a well. A general equation is presented in this report without assumptions for vertical flow of fluids and a conventional-type equation is derived on the basis of assumptions that fix the temperature and compressibility at constant values. Accurate pressures at the sand faces in wells are required in the method of determining the productivity of gas wells, as outlined by Rawlins and Schellhardt1 in Bureau of Mines Monograph 7. Where measurements are not made with subsurface-pressure gauge; or static gas columns are unavailable, flowing pressures customarily are calculated at the sand face in the well by the use of the well-known Weymouth formula1. Natural gas engineers have realized that errors introduced by the use of friction factors as given by the Weymouth formula are relatively unimportant in testing low-capacity gas wells; they also know that such factors are important considerations in testing large-capacity gas wells. Accordingly. present research on the productivity of gas wells at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla., is being directed toward measurement of the pressure loss due to friction in flowing gas wells. It is beyond the scope of this report to show how friction factors vary with rate of flow and in pipes of different diameters, as it is intended only to develop and illustrate the use of mathematical expressions for calculating friction factors from flow-test data. The equations presented apply only to turbulent flow in circular pipes. Mexico continues to be one of the main producers of silver, lead and zinc; although this leadership is ending because of the use of obsolete technologies, which is reflected in low recoveries of these processes. The country therefore requires to develop on new technologies in the field of nonferrous metallurgy, particularly be'cause it is the second most important source of foreign exchange. A novel method, presented in this paper, demostrates that refractory gold and silver can be extracted from a complex sulphide concentrate by a one stage pressure oxidation in an alkaline cyanide solution, this is achieved by simultaneous liberation_ and solubilization of the precious metals. Both gold and silver extractions are greater than 97%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency, such as: pH, lixiviation time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density, were investigated. A summary of actual plant operations is also be included.

The Mineral Resources Institute at The University of Alabama is engaged in a program whose objective is to develop a beneficiation system for Eastern oil shales. Prior experience (1,2) at The University had shown that the grind required for liberation of the oil rich kerogen was substantially below 20~m. Based on this fact and the rapidly emerging consensus that column flotation is the preferred method for ultrafine particle separation, efforts were focused on the column flotation of oil shale. This paper, which must be regarded as a progress report on a continuing MRI project, describes the observations made and the results achieved to date. The investigation is being conducted in two phases. The first phase has been completed and consisted of a factorially designed experiment conducted for the purpose of screening a set of primary flotation variables. The second phase, which is still in progress, is focused on optimization of the operating conditions and development of a flowsheet for specific shales.

The basic condition necessary for flotation is hydrophobicity of the surface of the mineral to be floated. For sulphides, this condition usually requires treatment with a collector solution. The conditions for this treatment have until recently usually been chosen by the trial and error principle which has indeed been working relatively well under favourable conditions; ie for simple homogeneous ores. However, the present tendency to increasing use of complex and often relatively lean ores sets increasing requirements for the control of the flotation process. This development is the reason for the present rapid development of process control methods in flotation. In addition to the already well-established practices of pH and reagent feed controls, the importance of measuring and controlling the electrochemical potential of the ore particles to be floated is recognised in the case of sufficiently conductive minerals. In fact, the electrochemical potential seems to be the basic quantity determining the flotation behaviour of such relatively well-conducting minerals as sulphides. Since the hydrophobicity of the mineral and, hence, its flotation properties are ultimately determined by the composition and structure of its surface, information on these under different process conditions is important for design and operation of efficient flotation processes. The basic requirement set for the methods used for obtaining this information is high surface sensitivity of the method. The recent rapid development of surface characterisation has produced several methods which fulfil this requirement. Their application to the problem of characterising surfaces of mineral samples in contact with collector solution is, however, often complicated. The main reason for this is the vacuum environment necessary for the measurement. In the case of flotation experiments this means that in most of these methods the measurement cannot be made in situ, but the sample must be extracted from the liquid and subsequently evacuated in the vacuum chamber of the instrument. It is essential to carry out these steps so as to avoid to the extent possible changes in the sample surface. For the purpose of establishing whether this has been accomplished it is important to compare the results of methods operating in vacuum with some available in situ method. An optimal choice of methods seems therefore to be a combination of the available powerful vacuum methods with in situ measurements. The most usual combination seems to be X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and electrochemical measurements. This choice combines the unique possibilities for direct elemental and chemical characterisation offered by XPS (Cecile, 1985) with the in situ capability of FTIR and electrochemistry. In the XPS measurements, it is essential to apply a special sample handling technique to avoid loss or damage of some sensitive species of the collector-based layer on the mineral surface. In the following will be given some examples of the application of the XPS technique in combination with electrochemical methods of sample treatment to studies of the layer formed on sulphide substrates in ethyl xanthate (EX)

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to caal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow.
