Sublevel caving techniques at Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) in Sweden have undergone significant modification over the years as management strives to maintain mine viability amidst rising costs and erratic iron ore prices. LKAB, which is 96% state-owned, is Sweden's principal iron ore producer and operates three iron mines north of the Arctic Circle. By far, the largest of LKAB operations is the Kiirunavaara (Kiruna) underground iron mine which extracts an estimated 30 million t/y of ore, Other iron mines include the Malmberget underground nine, rated at 12 million t/y of ore, and the Svappavaara open-pit mine, rated at about 4.5 million t/y. Mined ores from Kiirunavaara and Svappavaara are shipped by rail to the northwestern harbor of Narvik, while Malmberget ores are sent to Lulea, located to the southeast. LKAB iron ores are marketed by Malmexport AB, which is owned jointly by LKAB and Granges, Sweden's base metal producer.

Rather than attempting to present a summary of the many and highly varied papers that have been presented at this symposium on sampling and grade control, I will attempt to extract the general philosophy of analysis and approach, and attempt to identify the trend of future developments. First, the term "sampling" is used with its broadest connotations. A sample consists of a representative portion of a larger mass, and must represent the mass not only in the grade of contained metals or minerals, but also in all other respects in terms of mineralogy and mineral quality (1, 5), deleterious materials, recoverability of economic components, physical behavior, geophysical response (I), and even archaeological and environmental aspects (7, 11). The sample must be taken from a locality and in such a manner and quantity that it is representative of the larger rock mass. This calls for complete and accurate geological control and an understanding of the nature and distribution of the contained chemical and physical elements and a record of the effectiveness of the different sampling methods. Second, value of a given mass of ore material is based upon its profitability - the difference between recoverable value and costs to achieve recovery, beneficiation and sale. There is a strong movement in mining geology control toward more complete analysis in determining cutoff grades and in grade control, as illustrated by the kriging of metallurgical recovery factors as well as grade at the Mercur Mine (8). To achieve a "profit- ability factor" as a guide for economic mining practice requires further integration of: 1) the value of contained metal or mineral, 2) percentage recovery of values, 3) dilution of ore with waste rock, 4) addition to, or loss of value as a consequence of by-product materials or deleterious components, 5) cost of producing a saleable product plus mini- mum profit to justify the effort (cutoff), and 6) cost of land restoration (7, 11). All these parameters vary with the rock type, rock structure, mineralogy, depth, geometry, mining and metallurgical methods, but they must be sampled and analyzed if sampling and grade control are to reflect profitability. A wide variety of deposits has been presented at this symposium; each deposit with its own problems and special solutions. Deposits containing high unit-value components, e.g. precious metals and diamonds, present special problems in the obtaining of accurate samples and generally require statistical analysis control methods or may disregard or modify occasional high or occasional low values, based upon experience (12 ) Grade control may be accurate for the long term but may vary for the short term. Bulk sampling is always essential. Deposits containing metals or minerals with low unit value are very sensitive to transport costs, and they are often very sensitive to small amounts of deleterious components or differences in physical or chemical behavior. Problems of sampling and grade control change with the genetic type of deposit, with the stage of deposit development and with the size of the information base. Precious metal epithermal deposits (2, 6, 8), because of rapid vertical zonation and erratic lateral distribution of values, have always been difficult to evaluate and maintain grade control and ore reserves. On the other hand, evaluation and grade control are relatively easy in bulk-low- grade deposits (4, 13). However, these deposits generally have a low margin of profit and are sensitive to mining and beneficiaton costs, price fluctuations and political costs. Industrial mineral deposits (5) often must be evaluated on the basis of their behavior, rather than by chemical analysis. Environmental impact generally increases with the scale of the operation, but certain elements or minerals have especially high impact effects (7, 11). In the exploration phase there is no production control of sampling procedures and careful geological observations are particularly essential. The greatest number of problems is related to the oxidized outcrop where the chemical environment of the ore body has changed and the contained values may have been enriched, depleted or values left unchanged (2, 6). Present evidence suggests that gold values may be very mobile under certain conditions (2, 6) and stable under others. Everything must be sampled in detail. Principal values and by-product or deleterious elements may vary dependent upon their position within the soil profile. Such factors as geomorphic position, erosion rate, vegetation, climate, etc., may affect the interpretation (1, 3). This program provides a fixed-price contract for site remediation and case closure and is well suited for large pro­jects with multiple PRPs, such as Superfund sites. Because Kvaerner is a large engineering/construction firm and not a consult­ing firm, we can offer this type of contracting mechanism that envi­ronmental consulting firms are hesitant or unable to provide. With TRAC™, Kvaerner assumes financial and technical responsibilities for carrying a site through the closure process for a fixed price. Liabilities carried on our client's balance sheet for site closure can be removed when they sign up forTRAC™. In many instances, a profit can be realized as the liability on the balance sheet may exceed our TRAC™ fixed-price cost to close the site. Bonds and other sureties securing the site can be released and set­tlement with other involved parties can be quickly reached. For a project to be considered for this program, it typically meets the following criteria: 1) The project site should be physically separated from other contaminated sites 2) A reasonable quantity of site investigation data must be avail­able including site-usage history with or without a projected fea­sibility study(ies) and/or remediation design 3) Access to perform all necessary work must be available. After a review of all site data, K vaerner develops a "risk menu" to manage financial risks. In this "menu", each compo­nent of the project is assigned a level of probability that the costs will occur. Then the base cost of each activity is "weighted" by multiplying the potential cost growth by the probability. This analysis assures that the financial risks are appropriately defined, weighted, and mitigated and a realistic fixed price is developed. Upon acceptance of our proposal and conclusion of contract negotiations, Kvaerner takes over future responsibility for clos­ing your site. This allows the client to: 4) Release reserves obligated on financial statements for the site (and potentially realize a profit if the TRAC™ fixed-price cost is less than our client's booked obligation) 5) Finalize cost settlement with other responsible parties, insur­ers, etc. 6) Redirect resources involved in the environmental manage­ment of the site 7) Cap legal and administrative costs In addition to performing the site cleanup and closure work, at our client's request we are able to: 8) conclude lease obligations for property 9) dispose of equipment and buildings

"This study assesses the Novosol® process, an emerging technology developed by Solvay to treat heavy metals from dredged sediments using phosphoric acid. The main goal is to convert toxic metal ions, such as Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ to insoluble metallic phosphates. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated by performing the chemical reaction in a tubular reactor, followed by convective drying and maturation of the treated sediment at ambient temperature and finally thermal destruction of the organic matter by calcinations (500°C-700°C). Selected variables (acid concentration, volume fraction of solids, flow rate, drying and calcination temperature and time) were investigated. Laboratory scale experiments were carried out with various combinations of these parameters. The influence of the quantity of acid and the temperature of calcinations on physical properties of the sediment and stabilization of the heavy metals are discussed. Introduction The French territory counts 525 000 km of rivers which transport each year on average 6 million m3 of sediments. Their deposit causes the silting of channels, rivers and lakes. This completely natural phenomenon is exacerbated by the introduction of industrial and urban wastes into the erosion and sedimentation process. This silting leads to clogging of rivers, with a reduction in their flow rates. Consecutively, other problems appear, such as flooding risks, decrease of biological purification capacity and associated loss of the biodiversity. The presence of toxic compounds (from industrial, household or agricultural origins) in the sediments worsens the situation, and requires curing to restore the natural environment and its function. The dredged sediments are either spread on agricultural land, land tipped, confined or sent for chemical or physical treatment [12]. The first research programmes on toxic sediments appeared at the end of the Eighties in the United States, in Canada, in the Netherlands and in Germany. Several techniques of treatment were developed for the sediments; these techniques can be used alone or in combination. These techniques include extraction and concentration of the pollutants: the pollutants are isolated from the sedimentary matrix and the sediment is decontaminated. In some cases of organic contaminations, the pollutants are destroyed by chemical oxidation or biodegradation and in other cases, the contaminated material is either stabilized (mixed with hydraulic binders), or destroyed (incineration) [14,15]. Phytoremediation by afforestation has also been reported [19]."

The use of ground-probing radar as a reflection mapping tool has expanded greatly in the last few years. This tool can now be used to produce near surface information which is very useful to geotechnical engineers. Using the lightweight field equipment now available, it is possible to use the radar within mines and tunnels to obtain information which may impact the safety and production of these operations.

1.0 PROLOG Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. Water derived from mine-tailings typically contains high concentrations of H+, SO4, Fe and other metals, and it frequently suffers a decline in pH and the development of acidic mine drainage (AMD). A paper describing the results of a series of laboratory experiments with real AMD and a subsequent field trial with a in situ pilot system to assess a potential method for remediating tailings-derived water is presented here. After testing different organic substrates, residence times and flow conditions during two years to determine the most appropriate treatment for a polluted Spanish AMD, a pilot scale system combining SAPS, ALD, oxidation/sedimentation ponds and an anaerobic wetland was designed. Preliminary analyses of effluent samples indicate acidity and metal removal is occurring within the system, although sulphate removal is not complete. The results of this small-scale field trial suggest a potential cheap, long-term alternative for remediation of acid mine drainage.

"The Western Research Centre (WRC) of CANMET located in Devon, Alberta, is a modern research facility offering services ranging from fundamental research to pilot plant investigations. Recently, a 0. 76 metre diameter by 7.9 metre high Flotaire column flotation cell was installed as a demonstration unit for Canadian coal producers. Because the column cell is intended to be used for research, development and demonstration, WRC recognized that additional sensing equipment and improved process control would be required to generate good data for subsequent column scale-up and engineering design.A low cost, personal computer based control system was, therefore, designed and installed. This paper describes the stepwise procedure in developing the control strategies, selection of system software and hardware, and installation and configuration of the system.Preliminary performance data on a western Canadian coal sample are also presented. Future testwork is planned on additional coal samples to expand upon existing database."

Estimated natural zeolite production worldwide during 2004 remained at about 3.6 Mt (4 million st), about the same as in 2003. China continues to be the largest producer of natural zeolites followed by Cuba, Germany, Japan and South Korea. This may be changing, however. Since 1988, zeolite production from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines and Thailand has increased rapidly. Most of the production is consumed in aqua culture. Global demand for seafood has exceeded the ability of the oceans to supply it without over fishing. Zeolite minerals remove ammonia compounds from the ponds in which fish and shrimp are grown. It is estimated that, in Thailand and Indonesia more than 55,000 farms produce260 kt (286,500 st) of shrimp. Therefore, as shrimp production increases, so does zeolite consumption.

INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.

"Complex research of flotation concentrates of monomineral fractions of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, pyrrhotite included methods of adsorption of collectors, surface compounds by IR ATR, and surface films of flotoreagents by TEM. They revealed that the proportion of the parts of thionocarbamate (TC) and dithiophosphate had an effect on the adsorption rate of the components of minerals, on the presence of characteristic bands, and, what is an important, visualized surface film of organic flotation reagents on the particles of concentrates by TEM. The predominance of thionocarbamate in a composition selectively increases the adsorption rate constant of the components and recovery of chalcopyrite compared with sphalerite and galena. The highest flotation rate using TC is characteristic for chalcopyrite (0.62 min- 1) in case of individual use, and it's in combination with butyl xanthate (25% butyl xanthate or 3:1) 0.89 min-1 too. We studied the ternary blend - dithiophosphate: thionocarbamates: butyl xanthate. The increase of the proportion of butyl xanthate in combination reduces the contrast of the flotation rate among all sulfides.Practice flotation of refractory sulfide copper-zinc ores of the Urals (content sulfide iron - 75- 95%) confirmed that the use of a combination of selective collectors increases selective recovery of copper sulfide minerals up to 50% at the first fraction that is the conditioned copper concentrate. New selective sulfhydryl collectors resulted in high levels of recovery of copper into a concentrate - more than 90% - against 70-72% (butyl xanthate) from copper-pyrite ore. Low floatability of iron sulfides has been obtained by selective sulfhydryl collectors. Using weak selective sulfhydryl collectors can reduce pH into collective or selective flotation from pH 10-10.5 to pH = 7.2-7.5, which improves the quality of individual concentrates of nonferrous metals and their recovery. The same is true for polymetalic sulfide ore. The volume of gold recovery also increased."

In this paper, we consider open pit optimization. At present, most methods specify the economic parameters and then find the corresponding optimal pit. But as the economic environment varies (which it does regularly these days), the "optimal" pit changes and quite often changes markedly. The questions are: by how much does it change and which parameters are most influential? The functional approach of Technical Parameterization of Reserves, devised by Matheron in 1975, gives the set of all the different optimal pits, under any economic condition. It separates technical design and economic assumptions and thus permits the use of several optimality criteria when choosing the final pit, and not just the maximization of an additive profit formula. Very efficient specific algorithms are presented to obtain all the potentially optimal pits. Fluctuations in the parameters induce changes in the optimum design. Inclusion relations that exist generate very tight bounds and hence very quickly detect optima, even when using a classical adaptation of maximization techniques (graph theory, moving cone, dynamic programming ...). The advantage of Technical Parameterization of Reserves over other methods is that it provides a nested sequence of optimal pits which can then be used for mine scheduling. Many possible mining schedules can be obtained by using the family of technically optimal projects to split up the orebody. The "optimal" schedule, which is in fact a compromise between the different requirements of the economists, the mine planner and the metallurgist, can be chosen from within the wide scope of possibilities. A practical example of mine scheduling for a chromite mine is presented in detail.

It is not often that a mining district is discovered, opened up, exploited and developed into a rich producer within the space of three or four years. Not until the year 1903 was the existence of the rich cobalt-nickel arsenides and silver of Northern Ontario even suspected by the mining public. But it is worthy of record that Dr. W. G. Miller, the man who has done so much to develop sanely and honestly the mineral resources of Ontario, pointed out [ ] the possibilities of this region at least two years before the first discovery was made. . Dr. Miller, then Professor of Geology at the School of Mining, Kingston, Ont., referred in these words to the district: "It will be seen from what has been stated on preceding pages that the district examined contains as great a variety of rocks as probably any part of the Province of equal area . . . INTRODUCTION Cracks, crevices, holes, and fissures -- here collectively termed pores -- occur in all manner of substances in sizes from those evident to the unaided eye to those well below electron microscopic levels of detection. Naturally occurring materials having varying degrees of porosity are represented by wood, rock, soil, and mineral formations. Man-made materials that are porous include ceramics, sintered metals, catalysts, adsorbents, filters, and various compacted objects. The extent of their porosity greatly influences the hardness, rigidity, integrity, and general usefulness of such materials, and assessing both their pore volume and size is becoming increasingly necessary. Means by which this pore information can be obtained is the subject here. No attempt will be made to include all techniques and variations of them that have been suggested, but, hopefully, those of most general applicability will be described in sufficient detail to enable a potential user to judge their merit for a particular need. The results of pore measurements are made useful by relating them through other tests to performance criteria such as weatherability, water penetration, frost damage, oil recovery, strength, or thermal or electrical conductivity. These tests, of course, are outside the bounds for inclusion here. A pore is variously defined in dictionaries as "a minute opening", "a small interstice admitting passage of liquid", and "an interspace between particles". Clearly any object through which it is possible to find a continuous path from one side to the other either for a liquid or a gas must be regarded as porous. (New York Meeting, February, 1913.) IT is delightful to read a technical paper like that of J. E. Johnson, The Effect of High Carbon on the Quality of Charcoal-Iron, presented in October, 1912, at the Cleveland meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.1 The clear, simple, and straightforward manner in which he describes his experiments and results makes you feel as if you had been, so to speak, at his elbow during the course of his investigations, while his method of procedure is so rational that you can fairly anticipate each step in the logical sequence of the tests performed. The following notes suggested by Mr. Johnson's paper are presented here in the hope that they may help, if only a mite, towards the final solution of a problem of considerable scientific and industrial importance.

A novel liquid-liquid separation for the recovery of free or liberated gold from mixtures of fine particles was evaluated. Two inexpensive and environmentally benign fluids were selected for the study, water and carbon dioxide. The separation, which is conducted at 295 K and at the vapor pressure of carbon dioxide (6.0 MPa), is based on differences in wettability between the precious metals and other minerals. Contact-angle results indicated that, in the presence of water and liquid CO2, gold is slightly hydrophobic. The addition of CO2-soluble fluoroalkyl thiols or f uoroetherthiols increased the hydrophobicity of gold exposed to water and CO2 to a greater extent than alkylthiols. Minerals, including quartz, pyrite and magnetite, were hydrophilic. During the separation, an aqueous slurry of fine mineral and gold particles was mixed with liquid carbon dioxide. Pure gold particles (-325 mesh) were found to agglomerate at the H2O-CO2 interface. The minerals tended to remain in the aqueous phase. Despite these promising preliminary results, very poor gold recoveries were obtained when applying the procedure to an Australian gravity concentrate. This was attributed to the native gold particles in the concentrate being either too large, agglomerated in slimes or coated with minerals. Although this particular application was unsuccessful, this water-CO2 biphase technique may be applicable for other separations that require the removal of very fine, hydrophobic particles from an aqueous slurry.

"Zn-Cr alloy coating with around 15 wt% Cr has been found to have much higher chemical corrosion-resistance to steel than conventional zinc plating, while· its structure has not been clarified. The Zn-Cr alloy plating is performed at high current densities around 1 A cm-2 and for 10 to 20 sec using acidic aqueous sulfate solutions with some additives in the iron-steel industry. Due to the high current densities, it seems reasonable to consider that the Zn-Cr alloy plating proceeds under an unsteady-state condition and that the resulting coatings have a non-equilibrium phase and have a structure change in the .direction of thickness. In this research, the crystal structure of the Zn-Cr alloy coating electrodeposited at high current densities and change of the structure in the direction of thickness were examined by X-ray diffraction. The coatings containing under 20 and 35-40 wt% Cr had hcp and bee structure, respectively, while the coatings containing 20-35 wt% Cr comprised two phases with the hcp and the bee structure. The structure of the coating varied in the direction of thickness; both the hcp and bcc phases coexisted in the vicinity of the substrate, while the hcp phase became predominant with increasing distance from the substrate.IntroductionRecently it has been reported that Zn-Cr alloy coating containing around 15 wt% Cr has much higher corrosion-resistance to steel than conventional zinc plating.1-3) The corrosion-resistanc·e of Zn-Cr alloy plated steel sheet with a plating amount of 20 g m·2 is, for example, superior to that of Zn plated steel with a plating amount in the range 60 to 90 g m·2 , which is widely used for automotive bodies today.4l The Zn-Cr alloy plating is obtained by electrodeposition at current densities over 0.5 A cm·2 from a sulfate solution containing zinc and trivalent chromium ions and some additives.5•6) The deposition current densities mentioned above are much higher than those for usual electroplating processes, e.g., Zn, Cu and Ni plating, carried out about 0.05 A cm·2 • Therefore, the time required for plating is very short; around 10-20 sec. Due to the high current densities, it seems reasonable to consider that the· Zn-Cr alloy plating proceeds under an unsteady-state condition and that the resulting coatings do not have a phase expected from equilibrium diagrams; no phase diagram of the Zn-Cr system with a full composition range has been available. 7). In other words, the alloy phase plated would be a non-equilibrium phase with unknown structures."

British Mining Fields, by J. E. Metcalf. Published by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, 1969. Price 50s. (Students, 30s.). A 100 years or so ago Britain's mining industry led the world in the production of coal and base metals. Although she still maintains a sizeable-and, under the circumstances, remarkably progressive-coal mining industry, her production of most other base minerals has long since been dwarfed by mining fields in the Americas Africa, Australia and the U.S.S.R. Nevertheless the story of mining in Britain is of wider interest than the present scale of operations there might suggest, if only because the domestic British mining industry has in terms of finance, technology and manpower been the fons et origo of many highly productive mining fields outside Britain, including the Witwatersrand goldfields. British Mining Fields was published by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to give delegates attending the Ninth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Conference a succinct account of mining in Britain. The main emphasis is on underground mining of base minerals-treated regionally-with separate chapters on coal and gypsum. The author strikes an admirable balance between historical aspects, geological origin and environment of ore deposits, mining methods and economic factors, and provides a few key references for those who wish to make deeper studies. This is exactly the sort of booklet one often wishes were available on South African mining.

It was hoped that its discussion would eventually lead to the appointment of a Commission, by the great metallurgical interests of the United States, to investigate the whole subject, since it is believed that a better and cheaper artificial product can be made than any now in use, and that many other important incidental results would be accomplished by such an investigation.
