The reasons for selecting two stage pebble milling in preference to conventional methods of grinding are discussed. Commissioning of the first section was completed in October, 1969. Improvements in both the operating and engineering aspects were then incorporated in the section commiss ioned in March, 1971.

A study of the effect of various corrosive waters on five different types of cements indicated that those cements containing less than 5 per cent tricalcium aluminate were the most resistant to corrosion. INTRODUCTION Oil field experience indicates that some formation waters are excessively corrosive to some cements. A study has been made to determine the most corrosive waters and the relative resistance of various types of cement to these corrosive waters. PROCEDURE This study of the corrosion of cement was limited to an evaluation of the effect of various corrosive waters on five different types of cements. A determination was made of the types of cements which offer the greatest resistance to corrosion and of the chemical contents of waters found to be the most destructive to cements. The laboratory tests were conducted by immersing small cylinders of 20 samples of set cement in various corrosive waters. The initial mixing of most of the cement slurries was done using Tulsa tap water as the mixing water; however, a few of the slurries were mixed using a sulfate water as the mixing water. When the 20 samples had been immersed for a period of nine months, they were removed from their corrosive baths, inspected and photographed. The field tests were conducted by placing ten cement specimens, each contained in a screen wire thimble, in the gas anchors of insert pumps in wells in six different fields. The specimens were observed whenever it was necessary to pull the pumps and were returned to the 1aboratory when deterioration had reached a serious state. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS In both the field and laboratory tests the resistance of the different cements to corrosion was determined by the condition of the samples and the number of samples of each that were in good condition at the end of the immersion period. Table I lists the various cements tested in the order of their resistance to corrosion with the most resistant at the top and the least resistance at the bottom. An analysis of Table I reveals that the upper half of the table predominates in slow set and sulphate resisting cement.: (low 3CAO.A12O3 content) while in the lower half the port-land and high early strength cements are in the majority. Of the last two the high early strength cements appear to offer less resistance to sulfate water corrosion. An investigation of the composition of the cements listed in Table I indicated that as a general rule the cements containing less than five per cent tricalcium aluminate will exhibit the greatest resistance to corrosion. The destructive action of various corrosive waters was compared by listing the waters in the order of those containing the largest number of samples that failed completely. These ratings are presented in Table II with the most corrosive waters listed first and the least corrosive last. Figs. 1 and 2 show the end views of cement samples which had been immersed in the baths of five per cent MgSO, water and the five per cent Na2SO4 water respectively in the laboratory. These .pictures are representative of the results obtained and present a pictorial evaluation of the corrosive resistance of various types of cements.

THIS country was faced with the possible necessity of utilizing nonbauxitic ores for producing aluminum during World War 11. Construction of four experimental plants to treat such ores by four different processes was authorized1-4 including one at Salt Lake City, for the conversion of Marysvale alunite to metal-grade alumina and potassium sulphate by the Kalunite process.' An aluminum reduction plant in Tacoma, Wash., with a capacity of 50 tons of aluminum per day, was constructed to handle the Kalunite alumina produced at the Salt Lake City plant. The alumina and aluminum plants were Defense Plant Corp. projects operated by Kalunite, Inc. and Olin Industries, Inc., respectively. Kalunite alumina differs from Bayer alumina in several respects, particularly in that the former contains potash instead of soda. The presence of potassium in the alumina feed to the cryolite bath was stated by aluminum technologists to be undesirable under the usual operating conditions of aluminum furnaces. In 1940, about 20 tons of Kalunite alumina produced in the Kalunite pilot plant, were reduced electrolytically in a 10,000 amp furnace at Battelle Memorial Institute and at the aluminum reduction plant at Neuhausen, Switzerland. These relatively small scale tests indicated that satisfactory commercial aluminum could be produced in a practical manner. The Tacoma plant reduced about 2,500,000 lb of Kalunite alumina to produce more than 1,200,000 lb of aluminum, in accordance with the accepted gractice for reducing Bayer alumina. It was desired to determine whether commercial aluminum could be produced on a large scale and to establish the technological differences in commercial reduction practice between Kalunite and Bayer alumina. In the course of collecting data, the effects of the abnormal chemical composition and physical properties of Kalunite alumina were observed wherever possible. Tacoma Reduction Plant The reduction plant had two pot lines, each with 120 cells in series, operated at approximately 32,000 amp. Each cell was provided with a single rectangular Soederberg continuous anode, with side-pin electrical contacts. Each cell was hooded and ventilated through a stack connected to 14 other cells, with 25,000 cfm blower. When the plant started operation in 1942, all of the cathode linings were of block construction. Rebuilt cells were of rammed paste construction.

Until the advent of the porphyry coppers and the introduction of flotation which soon followed, crushing and grinding for many years proceeded along somewhat stereotyped lines, without important alteration in type of machinery. For the finer crushing and grinding, stamps, rolls, and various patterns of Huntington and Chilean mills were in general use. Ball-mills were in use abroad, but owing to their small capacity and the high cost of screens and steel, they never obtained much footing in the United States. Tube-mills were first introduced into the crushing departments of cyanide plants when it was found that for crushing finer than 30-mesh other types of crushing machinery were not efficient. In order to crush with one pass, these mills were made 18 to 22 ft. (5.5 to 6.7 m.) in length. Pebbles were used as a grinding medium and the mills were lined with either silex blocks or fragments of quartz or flint pebbles set in cement. While the cylindrical tube pebble-mill had been used to some extent in small installations of concentration mills, the first instance of its use on a large scale was at the concentrating plant of the Miami Copper Co., where 8-ft. by 22-in. (2.5-m. by 55.9-cm.) Hardinge mills were tried out against Chileans. The results of these experiments led to the gradual replacement of the Chilean by the Hardinge mill. Robert Franke published an article' describing the work done, comparing the two types of mills. At the same time, according to Franke, a test was run using a 6-ft. (1.8-m.) Hardinge ball-mill as a substitute for rolls for intermediate crushing on 1/2-in. material. According to Franke, this mill was soon discarded, since it was found that to obtain the desired product the mill must be limited in capacity. The Miami Copper Co. made no test with other types of ball- or pebble-mills. Following this example, others installed the conical type; and when the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. decided to build a concentrator, it adopted the conical mill. In his paper entitled, Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus, Dr. Richards has related the history of the development of the hin-dered-settling classifier and given illustrations of the several types of this apparatus which he has designed.' An earlier paper,2 Close Sizing Before Jigging, shows the nature of the hindered-settling phenomenon and the results which it produces. In the first-mentioned paper Dr. Richards describes the method of getting hindered settling and shows the relation that the constriction bears to the classifier. The question of proper ratios between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction opening Dr. Richards leaves open, aside from certain statements as to the ratios which have been found to give good results in practice. While working with a hindered-settling classifier of the type now in use at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. a number of interesting facts were brought out which have thrown considerable light on the question of proper ratio between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction and which will be made the subject of this paper. Free and Hindered Settling.—If a mineral particle be dropped into a vessel containing still water, the particle will sink in accordance with the laws of free settling in water, which are as follows: 1. Of two grains having the same specific gravity but differing in size, the larger will settle in still water at the greater velocity. 2. Of two grains having the same size but differing in specific gravity, the heavier grain will settle at the greater velocity. From these laws it becomes evident that the velocity of settling depends primarily on the specific gravity and the size of the mineral grain. The Formative Years Douglas Winston Fuerstenau was born December 6, 1928 in Hazel, SD to Edwin Arnold and Hazel Pauline (Karterud) Fuerstenau. His father, of German extraction, was a farmer and, later, a cabinet maker, while his mother, of Norwegian lineage, was a school teacher. His parents are still alive today at ages 91 and 88, respectively. Two younger brothers, Richard and Maurice and a sister, Jean, completed the family. The family first lived near Watertown and later in Lemmon and Mobridge, SD. The 1930's were a difficult period for any family in South Dakota. A decade-long drought made this a part of the dust bowl, which together with a serious infestation of grasshoppers (the locust plague described in The Bible), and the world-wide depression, made living difficult for all. In spite of these privations, Doug has many happy memories of his childhood which can be attributed to the resilience of youth and a strong family structure. He has fond memories of summers spent with his cousins on family farms where the children were introduced to farm chores at an early age. When he was old enough, he worked in a grocery store after school. At the age of 14 he spent the summer hearding 2,000 sheep near Lemmon, SD as his contribution to the war effort in that labor-short period. He remembers well the dust storms of the 1930ts, the destruction at his grandmother's farm by tornado, pulling weeds on the farm, threshing grain with a monstrous steam-driven machine and such pleasant childhood activi- ties as fishing for bullheads, hunting for rabbits, searching for arrowheads in newly plowed fields, and ice skating in the winter. THE treatment of emulsified crude oils has been a problem for years in the petroleum industry. Until comparatively recently various methods of settling with and without chemicals have been used with indifferent success. Since wells have been acidized, emulsified crudes have been produced, which acid considerably to the need for improved methods of treatment. The presence of large quantities of salts in the oils from acid-ized wells has presented several new problems to the industry. The use of hydrochloric acid in well treatments has caused the formation of sodium, magnesium, and calcium chlorides by interaction with the dolomitic limestones. These salts dissolve readily in the water normally present in the oil, and they are therefore incorporated in the emulsified oil. The crystalline salts have also been found in the oil, prevented from settling by protective films such as asphalt, resins and petrolatum. In, some instances, free hydrochloric acid has been found. The salts may be present in crude oil in amounts ranging from a few pounds to over 1000 lb. per 1000 bbl. of oil. The transportation of these crude oils through pipe lines has led to erosive and corrosive effects, which are a tremendous cost to the petroleum industry. During 1937, more than 1,200,000,000 bbl. of crude oil was transported through pipe lines. Of this quantity approximately 10,000,000 bbl. was water, and considerably more than 50,000,000 lb. was salts. If the crude oils were treated at the producing wells to remove the salts and water, an appreciable saving would be possible. The treatment would not be difficult, since it has been found that these oils are more easily treated at the time they are produced than after the aging and more stable emulsification that occur before they reach the refinery. Since great costs are involved in the use of these salty crudes at the refinery, treated oils essentially free of salts would naturally command a premium.

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125±7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenization temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166°C to 144°C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132°C to 128'C. Homogenization and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than MVT ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in two open pits (A and B) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: 1) replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores, 2) goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite, and magnetite that are disseminated in the fluorite ores, 3) partial replacement by fluorite of a titaniferous magnetite rimmed carbonatite dike in the A pit, and 4) partial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the B pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite, and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97% to 10.46% Ti02, averages 8.44% Ti02, and has an average V203 content of 0.35%. At high magnifications under the SEM, the magnetite shows abundant fine ulvöspinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range 3.21 to 5.0% and average 4.2%, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7% to 2.61%. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. The fluorite ores also have replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

Much has been written about the energy fuels including their standing with respect to reserves, their delivered Btu costs, their potential in the electrical generating market and their capabilities to meet a burgeoning demand. Yet, when all factors are placed in their proper perspective, the spiraling electrical energy market alone should guarantee each fuel a better than average market for the foreseeable future. In fact, a study made by the U.S. Federal Power Commission on the spare capacity utilities have on hand indicated that 39 of the 181 major utility systems had less than 10% reserves on hand at the end of 1969. Fuel supplies are critically low in some areas, especially in the Southeast, South Central and Midwest areas of the U.S. In other systems equipment shortages resulting from faulty equipment or delays in getting new equipment deliveries causes power failures during peak loads. In addition, lack of labor curtails the erection of some new facilities and prevents many other facilities from operating at capacity.

In the planning and erection of smelting-works, especially of such as contain the modern large water-jacketed blast-furnaces, we are often confronted with an insufficiency in the watersupply. It may be impossible to find in the immediate neighborhood of the selected site a sufficient supply to furnish the jackets with cold water. Or there may be enough water for this purpose, but it may be highly charged with scale-forming minerals held in solution. Background In the past, bentonite, an inorganic binder, was the only additive (binder) used in the production of pellets made from iron ore concentrate. Research has shown that the reducibility of conventional (acid) pellets can be increased by the addition of flux or an organic binder. The increase in pellet reducibility results in less wustite in the center of the pellet at high temperatures, such as those obtained in the cohesive zone of the blast furnace.

INTRODUCTION The paper presents a broad overview of the geotechnical site studies required for siting uranium tailings dams. These studies, which are interdisciplinary in nature, touch upon such related fields as: hydrogeology, hydrology, and seismicity. Tailings dams are commonly used to develop tailings ponds for the storage of the waste products generated by mine milling operations. In the past, most tailings ponds have been developed either above ground on dry land, or in existing lakes. In the United States a majority of the uranium mines are located in arid or semi-arid regions and past practice has been to store the wastes above ground on dry land (1,2). Currently, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (N.R.C.) recommends below ground disposal of uranium waste products, although they indicate that they will consider above ground alternatives (3). In Canada many of the existing uranium mines are located in a wet environment and past practice has been to use small lakes and depressions as tailings ponds (1,4). However, current practice in Canada leans towards above ground, dry-land storage (5,6,7), and the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) guidelines (5) indicate this to be the preferable method. In B.C., where a moratorium on uranium mining has been declared by the Provincial Government, there are no existing uranium tailings ponds. However, both the formerly proposed Birch Island and Blizzard uranium developments would have used dry land storage. Most of the existing non-uranium mill wastes in B.C. are stored behind tailings dams on dry land. The waste products delivered to the tailings pond comprise, the ground-up rock that remains after most of the uranium values have been removed and the excess chemicals used in the milling process. These waste products, which are called "tailings", are normally mixed with water to produce a slurry and then pumped to the tailings pond. Since the uranium recovered constitutes only a small percentage of the ore (usually less than 1%) (8), large quantities of waste rock and associated transportation water are discharged into the tailings impoundment area. Consequently, relatively large tailings pond areas are required for the uranium tailings. In recent years, major advances have been made in the design, construction, and operation of non-uranium tailings storage facilities (9,10,11,12,13,14, 15). The Bureau of Mines arranged to have a wood-frame test house built in the pat of an advancing surface coal nine so it could investigate the effects of repeated blasting on a residential house. Structural fatigue and damage were assessed over a 2-yr period. The house was subjected to vibrations from 587 production blasts with particle velocities that varied from 0.10 to 6.94 in/s. Later, the entire house was mechanically shaken to produce fatigue cracking. Failure strain characteristics of construction materials were evaluated as a basis for comparing strains induced by blasting and shaker loading to those induced by weather and household activities. Cosmetic or hairline cracks 0.01 to 0.10 mm wide occurred during construction of the house and also during periods when no blasts were detonated. The formation of cosmetic cracks increased from 0.3 to 1.0 cracks per week when ground motions exceeded 1.0 in/s. Human activity and changes in temperature and humidity caused strains in walls that were equivalent to those produced by ground motions up to 1.2 in/s. When the entire structure was mechanically shaken, the first wallboard tape joint crack appeared after 56,000 cycles, the equivalent of 28 yr of shaking by blast-generated ground motions of 0.5 in/s twice a day.

The dissolution of metallic copper powder in aqueous solutions of cupric sulphate under the influence of ethylene gas was investigated. The dissolution reaction stoichiometry obtained was: Cue+(aq) + Cu(s) + 2C2H4(g) = 2(CuC2H4)+(aq) The rate of formation of the copper (I)-ethylene complex in the above reaction was studied in a laboratory autoclave and the effect pH, temperature, ethylene partial pressure and initial concentration on the dissolution rate was measured experimentally and expressed theoretically in terms of several simple conceptual kinetic models. The results led to the selection of optimum conditions for the reaction and the suggestion of an "ion-molecule reaction" mechanism to explain the very low activation energies for the reaction system. The area of application of this reaction lies in the direction of refining impure copper such as cement copper. Several experiments were performed in which an acidified solution of cupric sulphate under ethylene pressure was used to dissolve copper from the cement copper powder in the form of the copper (I)-ethylene complex, followed by the release of gas pressure to disproportionate the complex and precipitate a purer metallic copper.

Herasymenko (New York University, New York) —The authors' experiments on equilibria between water vapor and liquid synthetic slags represent a valuable contribution to our knowledge of the nature of liquid slags. They can be regarded as a proof of ionic splitting of water molecules dissolved in slags. The assumption that water dissolved in slag was com- pletely ionized was made in my report on hydrogen equilibria in steelmaking as early as 194010. In that paper, the first systematic data were given on the content of ionized hydrogen in acid and basic open-hearth slags. WITH the present mobilization program in full swing and the enrollment in engineering colleges dropping off, many solutions are offered to relieve the shortage of trained men in the engineering profession. Industry can absorb about 30,000 engineers annually, according to the Engineers Joint Council, and forecasts indicate that the number graduating will have dropped from 38,000 in 1951 to about 12,000 in 1954. If this condition were to continue there would probably not be enough people with technical training to run industry in four or five years.
