Over 200 delegates attended the SAIMM Colloquium on Flotation, which was held at Mintek on 22nd September, 1983. In introducing the programme, the Chairman of the Technical Programme Committee, Mr Eugene Fivaz, said that an attempt had been made to strike a balance between theoretical and practical papers, which he hoped would provide something for everyone. He wished to record in advance the thanks of the Institute to S.A. Cyanamid for sponsoring the lunch, and to Bateman Equipment Limited for the cocktail party to be held at the end of the day's proceedings.

The National Institute for Metallurgy was the venue for a one-day colloquium on 'The Chemistry of Processes for the Recovery of Gold on Activated Carbon'. Organized by the South African Chemical Institute (Southern Transvaal Section) in collaboration with the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the colloquium attracted tremendous interest from the mining industry. Some 300 metallurgists, engineers, and chemists were brought up to date on advances in this technology made by scientists of NIM and the Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL).

Much has been written in the past about the non- cataracting ball mill as typified by the installations of the Tennessee Copper Co. at Copperhill and the three units of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. in its Humboldt and Republic mills. Because no direct comparisons are available from the Cleveland-Cliffs plants and because the published data of Tennessee Copper Co.'s London mill covered a period of development over several years, it has been difficult for engineers to grasp the full significance of the non-cataracting economics.

The viscosities of various FeO-SiO2 slags were calculated using a previously developed structural-based model. Using hole theory and the atomic pair model, an expression was derived to relate the viscosity to temperature and the fraction of the bridging oxygen in silicate melts. The deduced equation was successfully applied to predict the viscosities of FeO-SiO2 slags in the composition range of 0.1 < XSi02 < 0.423 for several temperatures. The calculated data agree well with the experimental viscosity data.

A late-1980 airborne EM/magnetic method test over the State Line kimberlite area of Colorado-Wyoming shows weak but recognizable anomalous responses to the known pipes. The magnetic survey indicates the presence of several shallow subsurface bodies adjacent to the known kimberlites, which are interpreted as possible blind diatremes. The survey data, in profile and contoured map form, has been correlated with geological map information available at the time. It can serve as the basis for reexamining kimberlite distribution in the area, taking into account geological findings during the recent work on known bodies.

Y.-The results stated by Rey and Brevers are so startling that they are of great interest, as the concentration of a low percentage of cinnabar by differential flotation yields a high-grade concentrate in the presence of either arsenical or iron pyrite. The authors say: "Cyanide can thus be used to depress arsenopyrite and make a good cinnabar-arsenopyrite separation. A cinnabarpyrite separation could probably be effected in the same way." Corrosive sublimate at the present price of mercury would be a very expensive reagent but the expense would be justifiable if a high rate of concentration could be obtained with a high extraction. On my request, special tests were made in the Punitaqui mill in Chile along the line suggested by the authors, without any improvement of either grade or extraction. As the recovery of the cinnabar in a complex sulphide of chalcopyrite and pyrite gave unsatisfactory results, I had tests made at the testing laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. at Stamford, Conn. As these tests turned out to be highly satisfactory, not only at Stamford but later at the mine, they are presented here. Meeting, Oct. -04, 1913.-The sum of $1,250 was directed to be sent to the International Engineering Congress, 1915, in accordance with the terns of the Institute&apos;s guarantee. It was voted to request the several Technical Committees to recommend names of their members as sub-chairmen and members of sub-committees to co-operate with the Bureau of Mines. The Finance Committee was empowered to send all members in arrears a notice that the provisions of the Constitution, by which they cease to hold the privileges of membership if their dues are not paid by Jan. 1, 1914, become operative on that date, unless the Directors vote to extend the time in each individual case. The report of the Nominating Committee, printed on page i, was accepted. It was voted that a notice to be prepared by the Committee on Increase of Membership and an application blank for membership be printed in the front of each Bulletin. The report of the Committee on Patent Law Legislation was adopted and the Committee discharged. The Budget of the Chairman and the Secretary-Treasurer of the Colorado Local Section for the balance of the present calendar year was accepted and an appropriation of $47.75 made to them. Upon the nomination of two members of the Committee on Honorary Members, backed by 13 members of the Institute who are not members of the Board of Directors, Dr. Frank Dawson Adams, of Canada, was unanimously elected an Honorary Member of the Institute. Upon the nomination of two members of the Committee on Honorary Members, backed by 11 members of the Institute who are not members of the Board of Directors, Mr. Ezequiel Ordoñez, of Mexico, was unanimously elected an Honorary Member of the Institute.

Abstract-Lead cake, a zinc smelter flue dust residue, consists primarily of lead sulfate. Characteristic properties of lead cake were determined in order to aid the understanding of reaction mechanisms involved in bismuth removal from lead cake by sulfuric acid digestion. Sp gr (specific gravity) measurements, surface area measurements, and photomicrographs revealed that the particles of lead cake are quite porous and seem to consist of an agglomeration of submicron grains (0.4 pm) fused together in a manner similar to cement clinker. Analysis of experimental rate data, which was independent of particle size, indicates that the dissolution reaction involves two distinct, rate limiting steps. The initial stage of reaction appears to be limited mainly by intergranular diffusion of the reactant, hydrogen ion, while the latter stage of reaction appears to be controlled by diffusion of soluble reaction products through the reaction product layer of the individual grains.

Sevim and Wang (1988a) have presented a model for designing haulage systems in underground coal mines. The authors contend that their model uses a heuristic algorithm to optimize various haulage system parameters. In reality, it would be nearly impossible to optimize a haulage system, because mining plans are uncertain and often change with respect to time. Therefore, haulage system design poses both a stochastic and a dynamic design problem, and its optimization appears to be well beyond the scope of heuristic algorithms. In regard to the authors&apos; design model and its practical significance, a number of additional issues warrant further discussion and clarification. These issues include: l) their model&apos;s alleged advantage over simulation models, 2) the correctness of their belt network design, 3) the correctness of their bunker design, 4) the necessity of their proposed bunker clearance policies, 5) the correctness of their shaft-bottom bin design, and 6) the

The report covers initial findings in an experimental program to identify diesel exhaust odorants and determine their contributions to diesel odor. The approach was to isolate selected component groups from exhaust and to evaluate the contribution of each group to exhaust odor. Results were obtained for those carbonyls and phenols that could be isolated from exhaust through inter-mediate conversion to oxime derivatives. Unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes and sterically hindered carbonyls were not included. Hydrocarbons intermediate in the diesel range were "also evaluated and an odor contribution was found from those of the aromatic group. The evaluated carbonyls, phenols, and hydrocarbons were found to account for about 20 pct of the total odor in exhaust from an indirect-injection engine during idle. For exhaust from the indirect-injection engine operating under load and from a direct-injection engine at no load, these compounds were found to have no significant levels of odor.

Carbonaceous gold-bearing ores of the type that occur in north-central and northeastern Nevada were investigated by the Bureau of Mines as part of its Heavy Metals Program. Specific objectives were to identify the carbon and organic compounds that prevent adequate gold recovery from the ore by cyanidation and to develop an economical process that would overcome the detrimental effect of the carbonaceous constituents. Activated carbon and long-chain organic compounds containing sulfur and nitrogen were found in the ore. Part of the material consisted of stable gold organic complexes. A mild oxidation technique that allowed gold extraction as high as 96 percent by subsequent cyanidation was developed. A variety of oxidants was shown to be effective in improving gold recovery, including chlorine and sodium hypochlorite (NaOC1). An electrolytic oxidation process was developed that was particularly advantageous from an economic and effectiveness standpoint.

The North Branch tunnel segment of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan Mainstream System consists of 14,075 m (45,885 ft) of 9.2 m (30.2 ft) finished diameter and985 m (3,232 ft) of 2.5 m (8.25 ft) finished diameter concrete lined rock tunnels. The TBM mining and concrete lining methods used in completing this $166million project differed from “typical” TARP construction methods in that a two-stage concrete lining was placed and the lining was initially placed concurrently with TBM mining as a two pass system in the same tunnel segment. For the main tunnel (9.85 m diameter), TBM mining averaged 24 m/day (79 ft/day), excluding downtime associated with two main bearing changes, and the concrete lining placement, averaged 117 m/day (380 ft/day) and 53 m/day (174 ft/day) for the invert and arch segments, respectively.

Foi feito um estudo do comportamento termomecânico deste aço através de ensaios de torção a quente isotérmicos e comparados os resultados com os modelos matemáticos microestruturais da literatura ajustados para o aço em questão. Determinau-se a tensão e deformação de pico, tensão e deformação crítica e o amaciamento do material e compados com os modelos utilizados.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory beneficiation tests on four samples of waste. granite sludge to devise a method of recovering silicon carbide (SiC). Froth flotation using creosote as a collector in an alkaline circuit resulted in concentrates containing over 91 pct SiC from each of the samples. Recoveries ranged from 43.1 to 86.6 pct. Single-stage flotation of sample A using a column flotation cell produced a concentrate containing 92.0 pct SiC with a recovery of 71.4 pct. Flotation using petroleum sulfonate as a collector in an acid circuit resulted in a concentrate containing 95 pct SiC from one of the waste granite products with a recovery of 97.5 pct .?
