El Modelo o Acuerdo de impacto beneficio (AIB) es una propuesta metodológica desarrollada en Canadá desde 1970, que busca generar consenso entre la empresa minera y las comunidades impactadas social y económicamente por un nuevo proyecto, mediante la firma de un contrato en los que se enumeran los impactos y las medidas de mitigación que se efectuarán en contraprestación para evitar el daño. Los Acuerdos de impacto beneficio permiten guiar el relacionamiento entre las partes, controlar expectativas y mitigar el impacto social. La firma de una AIB es el inicio de la licencia social para operar (LSO), lo que la convierte en un activo intangible del proyecto.

From 2013–2017, there were over 1,120 documented injuries, including fourteen fatalities, from ground falls in underground mines in the United States (MSHA 2017). The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft area of 8-gauge welded-wire screen were evaluated using a test frame designed for testing multiple load-pull locations. In previous tests, load-pull contact was always in the center of the bolted screen section. In this study, larger pull contact areas are used to simulate roof falls. The information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to better understand the loading behavior and surface control capability of roof screen in underground mines. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded-wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in NIOSH’s Bruceton Research Center Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. Previous tests to evaluate the performance characteristics of various types of screen have been conducted by the University of Alberta (Tannant, 2001). In this study, the load-displacement properties of welded-wire, chain-link, and expanded-metal mesh were measured by performing full-scale pull tests. A flat steel plate was pulled through a screen test sample that was bolted to a special test frame while the pulling force and mesh displacement were measured. These tests established the general load-displacement behavior of the screen. Peak load capacities and stiffness were determined for each screen type, showing how welded-wire mesh has a much stiffer initial loading response, whereas chain-link and expanded-metal mesh have large displacement capabilities and exhibit significant post-peak ductility.

The Mt Lyell Mine at Queenstown, Tasmania was re-opened in 1995 by Copper Mines of Tasmania Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mt Lyell Mining Co Ltd. The re-opening followed over 100 years of copper and gold mining at Mt Lyell. Major changes in practice were implemented across the site. Preventing further damage to an already disturbed environment was a major priority. Sublevel caving, at a lower cut-off grade, replaced open stoping for the deep underground mining. Development and later stoping are handled by a contractor, National Mine Management Pty Ltd, in the largest underground contract awarded at the time. Large scale sublevel caving was new to Mt Lyell and not widely practised in Australia, requiring studies and systematic development of the method, particularly in drilling and blasting. Rehabilitation and upgrading of mine infrastructure have been and will continue to be a challenge. The mine has, since 1995, returned to being a stable producer with potential for growth.

"Generally, the concentration of bauxite flotation tailings is around 10%, a large amount of water in tailings needed to be recycled in the flotation process. Sedimentation and dewatering properties of tailings were investigated under different conditions. Surface high negative charges on mineral particles are the key factor to destroy the settlement of tailings when the pulp pH is around 8.9. Hence, the modification of pulp pH around 7 is necessary to the diminution of the repulsive force between mineral particles and then the acceleration of sedimentation of tailings. Anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is the best flocculant for the settlement of tailings in all tested polyacrylamines. P-toluene sulfonic acid shows better properties than hydrochloric acid for pulp pH adjustment when anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is used as flocculant. Although the flotation of diaspore is depressed in the presence of polyacrylamine using sodium oleate as collector, but the recycling water traded by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touenesulfonic acid does not show the depression effects on the flotation of bauxite ore. The lower residual content of polyacrylamine in recycling water treated by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touene sulfonic acid plays an important role. INTRODUCTION Generally, the waste water generated from mineral processing plant is usually treated by sedimentation, oxidization, electrodialysis, ions exchange, active carbon adsorption and flotation technology, and the treated water is also used again in the industrial process. Flotation was adopted widely to improve the quality of bauxite from low grade diasporic bauxite in China. For flotation, the grinding fineness of bauxite is over 90% -0.074 mm, sodium carbonate and sodium hexametaphosphate were used as regulators, so the tailings pulp is very difficult to settle and be dewatered (Y. Wang et al., 2004; Y. H. Wang et al., 2007; Wang Yu-hua et al., 2008; Wang Yuhua et al., 2011). The water recycling of bauxite tailings are becoming the highlight for the industrial application of the flotation process for bauxite ore. Researchers in China shift their attentions onto this topic."

Process development is one of the principal tasks required in the course of turning an exploration discovery into a mine. Exploration geologists should have an understanding of the more important metallurgical processes and the test work required for each process. The paper discusses the important metallurgical processes, the test work and sample requirements for each, and the costs and time requirements to accomplish the testing. The limitations of reverse circulation drill samples for metallurgical testing are discussed. The level of process definition required to support engineering studies: scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies are also described.

In room and pillar mining a large number of working points are arranged to follow a mining pattern. Geological and roof control problems can be overcome or their effect minimized by varying this pattern. Longwall mining on the other hand, fixes the mining pattern for anyone panel. This aspect of longwall mining leads to constancy, so that a well-conceived organization, ventilation, dust and roof control systems lead to daily repetition and subsequent simplicity of control. All the same, a fixed mining pattern calls for a very careful consideration and selection of design parameters. (Ref. 1.)

Single stage semi-autogenous / autogenous (S/AG) milling has become a common design for a variety of ore types with the advantages of being comparatively low capital cost and flexible for future expansion. The single stage SAG/AG milling option is ideal for starter projects with significant exploration and expansion potential. Currently a number of the largest SAG mills designed are installed in single stage configuration. This paper discusses the challenges associated with the process design of single stage SAG/AG milling circuits, the design flexibility required to ensure a robust circuit and the operating techniques adopted at successful installations.

O presente trabalho teve como foco principal à análise do efeito da adição padrão da liga inoculante (FeSi T2) no tratamento do ferro fundido nodular fabricado pela BR Metals Fundições (Barra do Piraí / RJ, Brasil). Avaliando-se assim, com análises químicas, as pastilhas retiradas associadas aos corpos de prova em formato de cunha, e análise metalográfica destes últimos, o efeito do processo de inoculação padrão através da correlação de amostras inicialmente não inoculadas e após o tratamento de inoculação e nodularização. Foi possível observar efeitos da inoculação em função do tempo de fading, que diminui a quantidade de nódulos (nódulos/mm²). Tendo como base os dados na literatura de produção de ferro fundido, onde indica que o tempo de fading faz com que ocorra a diminuição nas partículas ativas para nucleação de grafita livre.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has conducted an intensive VertiMill® (VTM) survey program at the Cannington mine concentrator as part of the ‘collaborative research in stirred milling technology’ program funded by Metso Minerals. Since 2003, Cannington has progressively added grinding capacity into the circuit through VTMs operating in secondary and regrinding duties. Cannington was one of the first mines to adopt this technology in secondary duty by installing two VTM-1500-WBs as part of a capacity expansion to produce sub-100 µm rougher feed. Subsequently, an additional VTM-800-WB was installed in the lead regrind circuit to prepare sub-20 µm cleaner stage feed.Several surveys were carried out to evaluate the VTM performance over a range of changed conditions. Among the key changes in operating variables were circuit power draw, feed rate and water addition to the bottom of the mill. The average specific energy for secondary duty was 3.7?kWh/t. The lead and zinc regrind mills consume 8.1 and 15.3 kWh/t respectively. Generally, the VTM installations have successfully prepared feed for rougher and cleaner circuits by reducing the top size into the floatable regime with steeper particle size distribution, which has led to enhanced recovery. "This paper presents a case history of a successful construction-phase pile load test program that optimized the pile design in challenging ground conditions at the Great Neck Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The improvements and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant included the construction of several new structures to comply with new stringent nitrogen discharge requirements and new design flow. The challenging ground conditions included up to 20-ft thick organic deposits with weight of hammer blow counts and up to 14 percent organic content and tidal ground water that was near the ground surface. The foundation design evaluated various deep foundation alternatives and selected driven closed-ended pipe piles then filled with concrete as the most suitable foundation. The selection process included considerations of cost, risk, vibrations, noise, and schedule. The contract documents utilized an innovative approach of performing an optimization load test program that was implemented during construction to optimize pile lengths and reduce potential vibration and construction schedule.This paper discusses the details of the successful load test program including static testing, dynamic testing, and the innovative contracting approach utilized to implement the construction phase load test program. It also discusses the successful development and implementation of driving criteria for production piles and construction challenges. The successful load test program resulted in savings of several hundred thousand dollars, optimized schedule, and lower environmental impacts.SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Great Neck Water Pollution Control District (GNWPCD), located in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau, New York, owns and operates a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that discharges treated effluent through an outfall to Manhasset Bay, which is a tributary of the Long Island Sound. The site is located west of Manhasset Bay and is surrounded on three sides by local roads, and commercial, industrial, and recreational properties. The site has a gentle slope ranging from elevation +20 to +7 from west to east, respectively, based on the Nassau County Datum.To comply with new nitrogen discharge requirements and new design flows, the GNWPCD contracted CH2M HILL, Inc. and William F. Cosulich Associates as a Joint- Venture (JV) to design and provide services during construction of eight new advanced nitrogen removal facilities."

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the rock mass in high seismic risk environments has great potential. Unfortunately, there are many unanswered questions about how to best implement a hydraulic fracturing program at individual mine sites, and even how to best use our engineering tools to evaluate these plans. To give the hydraulic fracturing field tests at LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine the best chance of success, fully-coupled, discontinuum numerical modelling Itasca’s 3DEC code was used together with statistical simulations of the fracture network. For modelling purposes, it was assumed that hydraulic fracturing successfully reduces seismic risk through 1) the creation of hydraulic fractures along a plane at each injection site, and 2) activation of existing discontinuities. A variety of scenarios for the mine were evaluated, which focused on site specific uncertainties (such as the spacing of the pre-existing discontinuities) and practical solutions (such as the hydraulic fracture spacing, selection of injection medium, and hydraulic fracture site location relative to production). The discrete fracture network (DFN) realizations were developed using available statistical data for discontinuities near where hydraulic fracturing was planned.

Joined modeling of stressed state and induced seismicity is a means to join geomechanics with seismic observations. When applied to quantifying rockburst hazard, it provides, on one hand, estimations in terms of mechanics, such as stress concentration, and, on the other hand, in statistical terms of the risk analysis developed in mining seismology. The modeling became possible due to progress in computers and numerical methods. However, despite tremendous increase of computational abilities, the joined modeling is still quite time expensive. To make it available for wide use and real time simulations, there is need to reduce the time cost of its key stages: calculation of stresses, caused by mining, and simulation of seismic events, induced by these stresses. The present work aims to decrease the time cost. The stages are time costly because of the same reason, which is a very large number N (up to millions) of elements, representing rock structure, openings and flaws. This leads to immense computational complexity (roughly of order N2) of conventional accounting for pairwise interactions between the elements. The complexity may be notably reduced, when employing the fact that interactions decrease with growing distance between elements. Specifically, the fast multipole methods (FMM) avoid the complexity N2, by employing translations of far-fields from whole collections of sources. This reduces the complexity to the order 22, where p is the number of terms involved in a single translation, is the number of translations, and is the dimension of the quantity translated. Still, for conventional FMM, the complexity remains too high to routinely perform joined modeling of stresses and seismicity.

NIOSH researchers collected basic data from two blast rounds at the SSX-Steer Mine as a component of a larger study on controlled blasting, the goal of which is to reduce injuries from falling rocks in underground mines. Drilling and blasting procedures at the mine were observed. Rock mass property data were collected, a program of seismic monitoring and analysis was conducted, and 3-D laser survey scans of the workings before and after each blast were performed. The geologic data showed that the rock mass quality was characterized as poor to very poor. It was essentially uniform within the panels examined. The recorded seismic data indicated that fill material acted as an effective damper to seismic energy. The pre- and post-blast laser scans showed both over-break and under-break conditions, highlighting the problems associated with blasting a weak rock mass. By comparing the achieved results to the intended design, potential improvements in the drilling and blasting practices can be identified. Comparison of these data with similar data from other mines will help define how various combinations of rock and fill behave during blasting. Through studies such as these, data collection procedures and analysis techniques can be refined. An ultimate goal is to develop blast procedures tied to rock mass characteristics that can minimize damage to rock in the perimeter of the opening, limiting the amount of loose rock and improving the safety of miners.

Twin-bore tunnels with a single track in each tunnel are currently the most common subway tunnel configuration. However, a large diameter single-bore tunnel with two tracks separated by a center wall could replace twin-bore tunnels and introduce potential benefits but require necessary modifications to the subway system. In particular, a nominal 40-foot-diameter single-bore tunnel can be considered in lieu of nominal 20-foot-diameter twin-bore tunnels. This paper discusses the benefits and modifications introduced by replacing twin-bore tunnels with a single-bore tunnel, with respect to various elements of the subway related to the tunnel, stations, track, and tunnel systems.

The Route 6 /10 10 Interchange Design/Build project, located in Providence, Rhode Island, involves the design and construction of five (5) new elevated bridge structures to replace and reconfigure the existing interchange and to provide a link between Route 10 northbound and Route 6 westbound. Due to site logistics, headroom restrictions, and depth to bedrock, 50 ton drilled micropiles installed in the deep medium dense sand strata were initially proposed as the deep foundation solution. Post project award, Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) performed various analyses and developed an alternate driven pile solution using steel Tapertube. The results of these analyses indicated that driven steel taper tube and steel pipe piles could develop greater capacities than the drilled micropiles in the granular soil layer, thereby reducing the number of foundation elements, decreasing construction schedule and providing a more cost effective foundation alternative. A comprehensive driven pile load test program was subsequently executed by GTR and the Design Build Team led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, to assess the performance of Tapertube and steel pipe piles, including pile drivability, load-deformation characteristics under static and dynamic loading, and to develop site-specific design parameters in two (2) distinct test areas. The test pile program included dynamic, static compression, tension and lateral load tests on each test pile. Load test measurements were automated with embedded Vibrating Wire Strain Gages (VWSG) to measure load transfer with depth. The execution and results of the successful pile load test program are presented and offer unique case study and valuable data for the use of Tapertube piles on deep foundation projects in the New England region INTRODUCTION The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Route 6 / Route 10 Interchange is located west of downtown Providence. Originally constructed in the 1950’s as a highway bypass around the historic Olneyville neighborhood, the interchange consists of a series of nine (9) bridges and ramps that serve as a vital east-west link between Interstate 295, 95 and 195. Based on recent bridge rating assessments, seven of the nine bridge structures are rated “structurally deficient”. With many bridge structures shored with temporary supports as many as 15 years ago, the interchange is in critical need of replacement. In 2018, RIDOT awarded the Route 6/10 Reconstruction Design-Build Project to 6/10 Constructors, Joint Venture. Led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, the Design Build team includes O&G Industries, DW White Construction, Aetna Bridge Co. and AECOM. The scope of work includes the replacement of the bridges and ramps, and will provide direct access from Route 10 northbound to Route 6 westbound. Valued at over $400M (US), this is currently the largest project awarded in RIDOT history.

AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.

This paper studies the features of known and newly synthesized dialkyldithiophosphates and reagents with thioamide groups when separating copper-containing and arsenic-containing minerals in the flotation of skarn-scheelite-sulphide ore at the Primorskaya concentration plant. The optimization of dialkyldithiophosphate collectors was based on the study of their surface activity at the liquid-gas interface and estimated hydrophobic abilities. The flotation experiments show that the selectivity of action of the reagent increases with an increase of its surface activity and a reduction of hydrophobic ability when separating chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. IMA-225-5 was proposed as a more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collector, which increases the recovery of copper by 2.8% compared to the industrially used collector IMA-I413. Selection of the optimal structure for reagents with thioamide groups (derivatives of thionocarbamate and thiourea) was carried out according to their acidity and the presence of hydrophilic particles in their structure. Calculations were performed depending on the pH of the solution of chalcopyrite to determine the optimum reagent sorption and to further optimize the structures of these reagents. The tests with reagents with thioamide groups show an increase in copper recovery by 3-4% together with a significant increase of arsenic content compared to IMA-225-5. As a stronger collector with thioamide groups, it was recommended to use sample 234, which belongs to the thiourea derivatives. IMA-225-5 was recommended for industrial tests at the Primorskaya concentration plant. Thus, this study has shown that using dialkyldithiophosphate is more appropriate if it is necessary to increase the selectivity of separation of copper-containing and arsenic-containing minerals, and using reagents with thioamide groups, or their combinations with dialkyldithiophosphates, is more appropriate if it is necessary to increase the recovery of copper or the quality of copper concentrate with less selectivity of the process.

In the past 100 years in the mining industry, many references are made to the "Widow Makers", 'Miners Con" and many other derogatory names related to physical hazards. They reflect the lack of understanding of the problem facing the early day miner. Workers were enticed, in some cases, to take a chance against a medical question mark that could not be explained by the doctors of those early days. The optimism of the mining man and the challenge of work led him to believe that the physical results could not apply to himself and only applied to some of his fellow workers. Much of the time, to his dismay, he found that he had lost to the game of chance. As medical knowledge improved and mining management began to understand the effects of conditions in the mines and beneficiation plants, steps were taken to alleviate or eliminate the health hazards that were present, The organizations engaged in mining that did not take an active interest in employee health found themselves to eventually be placed in the position of being forced to take action by Federal and State legislation. We find ourselves in the 1970's on the threshold of a new era where the general public is concerned vociferously about "their" environment and the industry feels the governmental controls more strongly than ever before. It can be said that in the past 100 years we have advanced from the "Widow Makers" of the 1870's to the "Retirement Makers" of today. The difficulties of the early days in underground mining were of times compounded in the beneficiation plants above ground. As late as the 1950's some crushing and milling installations in the United States were operating under environmental conditions that complied to the then existing legislation but were below the health level sought by conscientious management. The Mission Concentrator Crushing Plant was designed in 1959 and placed in operation in July, 1961. The White River Shale Oil Corporation (WRSOC), as agent for Phillips Petroleum Company, Sohio Shale Oil Company, and Sun Shale Oil Company, is developing a prototype oil shale facility on Federal Lease Tracts Ua and Ub, located in northeastern Utah and known as the White River Shale Project (WRSP). The Ralph M. Parsons Company (Parsons) has been retained as the design engineer/constructor for the project. This paper covers the successful pregrouting of the Bird's Nest Aquifer in conjunction with the sinking of a 9.2-m (30-ft)-diameter shaft and driving of a 3.89-m by 5.64-m (18.5-ft by 12.75-ft) decline. The Bird's Nest Aquifer derives its name from the ellipsidal solution cavities caused by leaching of random-size nacholite nodules. The sodium bicarbonate nodules occur as persistent bands within a matrix of siltstone and marlstone. The team, made up of the owner, engineer/contractor, and subcontractor successfully grouted the shaft down to an inflow of less than 0.06 lps (1 gmp) and the decline down to less than 0.12 lps (2 gpm) by injecting a total of 213.190 kg (470,000 lb) of Celtite Terraseal, 113,400 kg (250,000 lb) of limestone dust, and 41,730 kg (92,000 lb) of cement into the formation.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is the largest primary producer of platinum and palladium in North America. SMC operates two underground mines in south central Montana, along the 45-km (28-mile) platinum/palladium J-M Reef in the Stillwater Complex. The Stillwater Mine exploits 9.6 km (6 miles) of deposit strike length and East Boulder Mine exploits 4 km (2.5 miles) of deposit length. The two mines are 20.4 km (12.7 miles) apart with SMC controlling a considerable length along the entire J-M Reef trace. Production at the Stillwater Mine began in 1986 and in 1988 the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) was commissioned, becoming an integral part of mine development at SMC. TBMs have been used for developing production footwall laterals (FWL) to access new mining blocks at the Stillwater Mine, as well as boring twin crosscut ac-cess tunnels at the East Boulder. Two TBM development expansion projects are currently in progress: the Graham Creek project at the East Boulder Mine, which will extend footwall lateral development 2,591 m (8,500 ft) to the west, and the Blitz project, where a TBM will be commissioned to extend east out of the Stillwater Mine to 3,658 m (12,000 ft) beyond the current production mining front. General strike and dip of the Reef is west to east and to the north, respectively.
