THE 142D MEETING of the Institute is rapidly shaping up with splendid prospects of a strong technical program and the lighter side of this annual occasion amply provided for. The date is February 20 to 23. The technical sessions will be held in the Engineering Societies building; the smoker-dinner, the informal dance, and the annual reception and dinner, at the Commodore Hotel, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The news to date on the technical side is as follows: Mining Methods-Subsidence The Mining Methods Committee has prepared an interesting program which will be divided into two sessions to be held early in the week. At the first there will be papers on mining methods and development, including a description of the "Sinking and Equipment of No. 2 Shaft at Minas de Matahambre," by Dudley D. Homer and R. H. Cromwell. They describe in considerable detail the equipment used and the practice followed in sinking this important shaft, giving detailed costs and performance figures. Hoist¬ing ?arrangements and mining practice at the "Red Ore Mines of the Woodward Iron Co. at Bessemer, Ala.," are described by Tenny C. DeSollar, superintendent of mines, in a second paper. At this session of the Mining Methods Committee, H. M. Roche and R. E. Crockett, of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite Mining and Milling Methods, will present their paper, "Iron Ore Mining at the Scrub Oak Mine." This mine is in the highlands of New Jersey about 40 miles west of New York City. Prof. Robert K. Warner of Yale University will present a paper on "The Selection of a Mining System," which should have an interesting discussion. Pierre R. Hines, of Portland, Ore., will present, with stereopticon slides, his paper on "The Owyhee Tunnels, U. S. Reclamation Project, Owyhee, Oregon," describing one of the recent irrigation undertakings.

T HE smelting industry in Utah is represented by four plants: The Midvale of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mini.ng Co., the Murray of the American Smelting and Refining Co., the Garfield of the same company and the Tooele of the Inter- na.tiona1 Smelting Co. The first two are lead smelters, the Garfield plant is a copper smelter while the last named embraces both a lead and copper smelter. A total daily smelting capacity of over 10,000 tons is represented, of which 4000 tons is lead smelting capacity. With the exception of Tooele, forty miles distant, all of these smelters are within twenty miles of Salt Lake City. Pyrometallurgical operations in this district are con- fined entirely to the production of unrefined bullion, which is shipped east to the various refineries of the respective companies. The smelting industry in this state had its beginning away back in the latter days of the Civil War, many years before the completion of the trans-continental railroad. Ox teams were still bringing their companies of better fixed Mormon emigrants across the plains to the valley of the Great Salt Lake and those in lesser circumstances were still pushing their hand- carts over the same roads to the temporary abode

YELLOWKNIFE, the most northerly Canadian gold mining district, is once more in the throes of a boom. Touched off by spectacular and well-publicized diamond-drilling results on the property of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd., mining companies and the general public are competing for mining claims and for the shares of companies owning mining claims in the area, with little regard for values. Such a stock-market boom has various unfortunate consequences but undoubtedly one beneficial result is that considerable amounts of money are made available for serious development. The Yellowknife mining area lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, in the Northwest Territories, at a latitude of approximately 62°30' north. THE Eastern magnetite industry has not failed in its contribution to the war program during the past year. Man-power shortage was the critical problem in maintaining production and for the last half of the year, owing to lack of man power, it was necessary for some mines to change from seven to six days per week schedule. At Cornwall, Pa., the mine operated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. produced approximately 2,000,000 tons of crude ore and 1,200,000 tons of iron ore concentrates, a decrease of about 10 per-cent compared with the previous year. Railroad haulage in the open-pit at this mine was discontinued, being replaced by Mack trucks of approximately 30 tons' capacity. At the Mt. Hope mine in New Jersey, the Warren Foundry and Pipe Corp. produced about 195,000 long tons of crude ore obtaining 70.000 long tons of lump ore and 35,800 long tons of concentrates. An additional 24,500 long tons of concentrates was produced from a stock pile of 47.000 long tons of crude ore accumulated during the latter half of 1943, following the fire in their old dry mill. THE Metal Sales Department, with offices in New York, is responsible for the sale of the Company's products, with the exception of gold and coal. At present the department handles the sales of lead, zinc, silver, antimonial lead, , cadmium, bismuth, arsenic trioxide, and tellurium; gold is shipped direct to the United States Mint and coal is marketed by United States Fuel Company's own sales organization. The department keeps in close touch with the metal markets and collects information on marketing conditions, which it makes available to other departments of the Company. The electrolytic lead produced at the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., is a high-uality product marketed as corroding grade under the "U. S. S.-ELECTRO" brand. It is largely sold to manufacturers of paints, pigments, lead oxides, and storage batteries.

At the Annual Meeting of the Institute, February, 1908, the following amendments to the Constitution were proposed for action at a future business meeting (see Trans., XXXIX, xxvii) To Art. II. After the first sentence of this Article, add the following sentence « These classes may be subdivided by the Council, according to profession, length of membership, nationality, or other conditions not inconsistent with the provisions of this article." To Art. III. In the first line, substitute " fifteen " for "ten " dollars. At the Annual Meeting of February, 1909, action upon these amendments was postponed to the next business meeting (see Bulletin No. 27, March, 1909, p. xiv). Of these two amendments, the first has been withdrawn, as unnecessary-the subdivision thereby authorized being already practicable without such amendment. The second amendment will be acted upon at the next Annual Meeting, February 15, 1910, and the Secretary has been instructed to call the attention of members to the subject in such a way as to secure a general vote upon it. A special circular, now being prepared by the Secretary, will shortly be sent to all members. Year Book of the Institute. O presente estudo tem como objetivo demonstrar a cinética de recristalização e o amolecimento da liga C272000 processada na laminação a frio com uma deformação de 75%. Para determinar o modelo cinético Johnson, Mehl e Kolmogorov (JMAK) foi adotado a temperatura de 450° entre 5min. a 50min. Restaurando totalmente a microestrutura deformada plasticamente sendo progressiva a elevação do tempo e da temperatura. A caracterização microestrutural das amostras foi utilizado microscopia óptica e metalografia. Conclui-se que o modelo JMAK satisfaz a forma de nucleação da recristalização da liga C272000.

Devido a seu preço competitivo e alta resistência à fluência e à corrosão, atualmente as colunas dos fornos de reforma são confeccionadas com tubos fundidos por centrifugação de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos da classe HP modificados ao nióbio. Apesar de projetadas para uma vida mínima de 100.000 horas em serviço, falham frequentemente devido a intercorrências operacionais que levam ao superaquecimento localizado, designados surtos de temperatura. No presente trabalho, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microanálise por energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDS) foram utilizadas para estudar duas colunas trincadas após um surto de temperatura. Descobriu-se que o NbC reprecipita na morfologia de pequenas partículas nos sítios onde a fase G foi dissolvida durante o surto de temperatura. Desta forma estas partículas servem como marcadores microestruturais da ocorrência do surto.

En la flotación de sulfuros polimetálicos, en particular la combinación Cu-Pb-Zn, la selectividad en la flotación primaria colectiva es clave para el resultado global del proceso. Cu y Pb deben flotar en la etapa primaria y el Zn rechazado. Un diagrama de flujo típico utilizaría depresantes (NaCN, ZnSO4), activadores (CuSO4), espumantes y colectores. Utilizando un mineral polimetálico sudamericano se desarrollaron colectores más selectivos contra el Zn en la flotación primaria sin comprometer la recuperación de Cu y Pb, y a su vez mejorando la recuperación de Zn en la posterior etapa de flotación de Zn.

Experimental oxidation tests at high temperature (1000-1200 °C) on SiC samples have been respectively performed under wet and dry air atmosphere for different holding times. The thickness of thermally grown oxide was experimentally measured by DEKTAK Stylus Profilometry. The results showed that the oxidation rate was increased with temperature and holding time, corresponding to a passive oxidation regime which led to the formation of SiO2 layer. The sessile drop method was employed in order to measure the contact angles between Si and SiC at high temperature. Contact angle can be varied from 39.6° to 75.6° by controlling the atmosphere. The deoxidation of the oxide layer and infiltration of liquid silicon caused a decrease in the contact angle.

In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of Celestine were investigated firstly. Based on which, the thermodynamic analysis of Celestine reduction was discussed. And the experiments of Celestine carbon-containing pellets used in rotary hearth furnace process were studied. The results showed that it is feasible to deal with Celestine by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction process. When the temperature is 1200°C, C/O ratio is 0.8 and holding times is 20min, the conversion rate of SrSO4 in Celestine is above 95%, the utilization rate of Celestine is nearly 100%. This study can provide theoretical and technical basis on economical and rational use of Celestine.

O processo de fabricação de gases do ar (oxigênio, nitrogênio e argônio) utiliza água como componente de resfriamento, para manter a temperatura do gás e dos equipamentos dentro dos limites operacionais. A qualidade de água está diretamente relacionada com a eficiência dos equipamentos rotativos, sendo assim quanto mais eficiente o sistema de resfriamento, menor será o impacto operacional, refletindo também no resultado financeiro da planta. Com o objetivo de melhorar o resultado operacional da unidade foi avaliada a troca do sistema de resfriamento convencional por um sistema com evaporative cooler.

Production forecasts derived from the medium-term schedule represent the best path forward for underground mining operations to achieve corporate and operational goals. Unforeseen circumstances, such as equipment breakdown, can cause significant deviations from established production forecasts in the short term. Such situations require timely mitigation of the effects of the deviations in order to stay as close as possible to the medium-term plan. This paper presents a deterministic mathematical formulation for short-term scheduling that addresses this challenge. The formulation is able to make up for deficits resulting from operational disruptions by minimizing deviations from medium-term production goals and medium-term activity start dates. We demonstrate this in a case study by simulating disruptions involving reduction in ore extraction capacity and development advance rate. Aside from the rescheduling capability, this formulation can help mine planners conduct analysis on the impact of various disruptions on the schedule. The formulation can help identify those conditions or disruptions that are more detrimental to the achievement of forecast targets, or otherwise. The formulation also affords mine planners the flexibility to prioritize one production goal over the other, depending on operational conditions at the mine. In the future, we seek to incorporate in the formulation respirable dust, diesel particulate matter and ventilation constraints in order to create more realistic schedules, and enhance miners’ health and safety.

"Continued emphasis on water and energy conservation with less operator attention has created a need for more sophisticated cooling tower controls. A joint Betz/ASARCO project has produced a computerized water parameter controller and automated pumpless feed unit. Interfacing the unit via radio modem to the operator control room computer allows real time system status monitoring. Incorporating SPC principles to monitor and regulate all pertinent parameters yielded enhanced water control. This paper described the system design and present the results of a six month trial.BackgroundReducing operating costs and better manpower utilization are two of the largest concerns confronting maintenance managers today. At the ASARCO plant in Amarillo, a trial has been initiated to prove that it is possible to accomplish both of these objectives by using automated cooling tower control. The system is being adapted from a unit that was designed for continuously operating cooling towers in refineries and power plants by Betz Equipment Systems Division, a subsidiary of Betz Laboratories, Inc. The System l3000™ is designed to continually monitor conditions in the cooling system and to provide adjustments to the chemical balance for corrosion and deposition control. At Asarco, the unit was installed on the Rodline cooling system which operates on an intermittent basis.The primary justification for this project is to reduce costs of the five cooling systems in the plant. Current procedures require an operator to make visual checks every two hours on the five cooling towers as well as run lab tests on the water to insure proper treatment levels. This manpower can be better utilized by controlling the towers and collecting all the data available at one central location, in this case, the boiler house."

By contrast with viscometry and sedimentation, no actual measurements of the applicability of Stokes' law to steelmaking have ever been reported; instead, the proof for and against Stokes' law has been inferred from the frequently observed phenomenon that inclusions collect in the top scum and the bottom of ingots. As such proof is unsatisfactory, continued reference to Stokes' law in steelmaking, even as a model for calculating the terminal velocities of rising inclusions, should be avoided. In fact, all conclusions that have been reached regarding size, density, and viscosity on the flotation of inclusions could be made more rationally without Stokes' law. A worthwhile exception is that of Mitsche1 who in 1934 used Stokes' law to show not only the expected effects of size, density, and viscosity on flotation but also the beneficial effects of i) melting under a slag layer (now Electro Slag Refining); ii) treating melts with synthetic slags (Ref. 2 gives recent applications); iii) bubbling an inert gas through the melt (recent applications in Refs. 3 and 4); and iv) altering the solid/ liquid interface characteristics. At this point, it should again be emphasized that the boundary conditions for which Stokes' law was derived place enormous restrictions on the law but its application, as noted earlier, can yield useful results in some fields under certain conditions and within well-defined limits. When compared with inclusions, which may be solid or liquid, spherical or irregular, dispersed or coagulated, interacting between themselves and the melt, floating in a liquid which is in a state of motion of varying intensity5 and contained in vessels of various shapes and sizes that may change with time as in a solidifying ingot, the conclusion is obvious-Stokes'

JUST four years ago, in March, 1930, Gilbert LaBine discovered the rich deposit of pitchblende and silver ore on the east shore of Great Bear Lake, 30 -miles south of the Arctic Circle, which brought a new mining district into being. His original discovery is now the property of Eldorado Gold Mines, Ltd., but other groups have been active. Vigorous prospecting has outlined a mineralized zone that extends at least 100 miles from north to south. In this area silver discoveries have been relatively common; pitchblende, as might be expected, has been harder to find, though a deposit has been located this spring nearly 100 miles south of Eldorado that may be of great importance.

INTRODUCTION Three major plant processes control the operation of an uranium in-situ mining plant. The three pro- cesses can be categorized under the headings termed - loading, elution, and precipitation. All other plant processes can be subcategorized under the three. In summary, the major plant processes in an in- situ mining plant are: 1. Loading - The pregnant lixiviant from the production wells flows through anion exchange resin. The loading of the uranium on the resin is controlled by various factors, such as ionic strength, valence, functional groups, etc. 2. Elution - The uranium-loaded resin is eluted or regenerated by a high ionic strength solution. The effluent from this process is de- fined as the pregnant eluate. 3 . Precipitation - The pregnant eluate is chemically treated to attain the ideal conditions for the selective precipitation of uranium. Hydrogen peroxide is an ideal precipitating agent under URI conditions. This paper will focus on two of the major processes: Elution and Precipitation. For the most part this relatively young industry has grasped the theory of liquids in continuous flow for the operation of the plant processes. Likewise, URI initially operated the two processes of interest with the continuous flow concept. Through laboratory experiments, URI has abandoned the flow concept and operates the eluting and precipitating stages with the concept of "batch" processes, whereby only one container, filled to a specified liquid level, is chemically processed. In the proceeding sections, each of the two pro- cesses will be discussed in detail, from their original concept to the present operation. Only minor modifications were made to the existing circuits for the conversion with results revealing a greater level of efficiency. ELUTION The elution of the loaded anion exchange resin can be achieved by different high ionic strength solutions. The selection of constituents is dependent on both chemical and economic considerations (i .e., efficiency and operating/restoration factors). The regenerant presently used is a pH 9.5 solution containing 7.5% NaCl and a mixture of Na2C03/NaHC03. expressed as 2.5% NaHC03.

It is important to study structures and their retrofitting techniques in order to avoid earthquake-induced seismic damage within countries that are prone to earthquakes. Todays, micro piles are employed as useful structural components for seismic behavior improvement. The present study analyzes inclined micro piles subjected to seismic loading by using the three-dimensional finite difference method (FDM). FDM assumes an idealized three-dimensional soil-micro pile model to perform logical behavior evaluation in the event of an earthquake. Linear and elastic micro piles and elastoplastic soil were employed in this study. The Mohr-Coulomb criterion was employed in the failure control of the micro piles. The micro piles were subjected to the 1978 Tubas earthquake records. The numerical results were compared to experimental data. The comparison revealed good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data. The inclined micro piles were found to sufficiently enhance soil strength under seismic loading, inducing smaller displacements than vertical micro piles. Furthermore, the soil and inclined micro piles showed salient interaction.
