"INTRODUCTION Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations has evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960’s-1970’s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980’s-1990’s . These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of “Operational Excellence”. Operational Excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining includes the following: • Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards • Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement. There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts. The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to affect the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process. This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement.THE RABBIT LAKE MINE AND MILL The Rabbit Lake Mine and Mill are located in northern Saskatchewan, Canada on the shores of Wollaston Lake (Figure 1).The mine was discovered in the mid-1960s and was built by Gulf Minerals, Ltd. The mill began processing uranium ore into yellowcake in 1975 from an adjacent open pit mine. A whole ore acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and precipitation forms the basic milling processes. The operation continued to produce yellowcake through a succession of open pits and finally opened an underground mine in the early 1990s. Since beginning production, over 200 million pounds of yellowcake has been packaged from the site, making it the sixth highest producing uranium mine of all time."

Generally, water-soluble polymers are effective in convergence of water jet ejected from a nozzle as they add viscosity to water. However, excessive additional polymers (added to keep water viscous) could increase friction on the contrary. Therefore, we have totally modified the jetting system from every possible aspect, such as the shape and upstream conditions of a nozzle in order to keep the flow spread to the minimum as stated in my presentation.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes and evaluates a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) based end-use data system for minerals that is designed to link the demand for minerals to economic activity in commercial uses. The new data system is two-dimensional. The first dimension of technical product classes (TPC's) measures the consumption of minerals in major primary intermediate products. The second dimension measures the consumption of these TPC's in SIC end-use sectors in sufficient detail to identify the major determinants of demand for each TPC. Intercomodity comparisons are achieved at the level of SIC two-digit major groups. The methodology was developed so that all available sources of information from Government and industry can be utilized at minimum cost. This information will be supplemented with additional data to be obtained by modifying existing Bureau of Mines canvasses so as to elicit additional quantitative responses from mineral producers. The new data system is expected to improve significantly the ability to forecast demand for minerals, and provide an information base that would, for the first time ever, permit resolution of such questions as trends in substitution among materials and the intensity-of-use of materials in end-use sectors. For the 42 TPC?s identified in the report, data are available for the new system from current sources or, except for three TPC?s that require new canvasses, can be obtained by modification of existing Bureau canvasses.

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr2O3. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 16 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, stope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider stopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

The Calmet Process for extraction and recovery of gold and silver from concentrates and high:grade ores has been a commercial reality for over two years. During that time period, almost seventy-five different concentrate (or ore) types have been processed in approximately 200 separate lots (a total of almost 2000 short tons). During commercial operation of the process at the plant in Fountain, Colorado, recovery of gold and silver into <lore' has averaged almost 93% for gold (range 81-98%) and over 90% for silver (range 76-97%) based on a fire assay target and calculated head values.

THE greatest problem confronting business managers in modern times is not production, but distribution. It would be easy to expand productive output, but it is difficult to find markets for all that is produced. The fundamental source of economic difficulty, in the view of many observers, is a lack of proper balance between productive capacity and consumptive capacity. The studies conducted by the Brookings Institution on the general subject, "The Distribution of Income in Relation to Economic Progress", have led to conclusions of far-reaching significance, which may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) We have never lived beyond our economic means or capacity. (2) We have not been suffering from general overproduction. (3) We have not as yet reached a stage in our economic evolution at which it is possible to provide adequate standards of living for everybody. ( 4) It would require less than a 25 per cent increase in purchasing power among the masses to absorb our full productive capacity. (5) Production-curtailment programmes-whatever their merit in meeting temporary maladjustments-can only lead to national impoverishment. (6) Our inability to find markets adequate to absorb the full output of our productive establishments is explained by the unequal distribution of income and consequent restricted flow of purchasing power through consumptive channels. (7) The slow rate of growth of consumptive demand serves to retard the rate at which new capital is constructed, and hence the rate of economic progress. (8) The primary need is a rapidly expanding total income, and a broader diffusion of this income among the masses of the people. (9) A broader diffusion of income can best be achieved by reducing prices as rapidly as increasing efficiency will permit. That is to say, the benefits of technological progress, mass production, and low unit costs must be promptly passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices-giving more for each dollar.

THE importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 AIME Open Hearth Conference&apos; reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. "The modest thermal efficiency of the steam turbine cycle essentially determines the heat required and, therefore, the coal consumption and ash production of pulverized-coal-fired powerplants. This paper emphasizes how some properties of coal and its ash can crucially affect the operation of a steam generator and its flue gas cleaning equipment. A brief reference to some siting factors and economics reaffirms the all-pervasive influence of the properties of coal and ash and establishes the importance of a firm supply of cooling water. The economics of scale remains a compelling factor in selecting the size of units, despite disappointing performances by some of the larger units. Environmental considerations suggest that smaller units still have a role to play. IntroductionCoal fuelled one industrial and economic revolution, beginning two hundred year s ago . It was the precursor of competing fuels, notably natural gas, oil and uranium, which eclipsed it in terms of convenience and rate of growth.The turmoil that now exists because of rapidly dwindling supplies of no-longer-cheap oil and the concerns about nuclear energy-justified or unjustified-exacerbated by an operating incident at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Powerplant, prompt speculation for a resurgence of coal, especially where it cangenerate electricity to replace energy from imported oil.The world&apos;s reserves of coal are not inexhaustible, although they are ample for several decades. Of greater import is the fact that the world&apos;s coal reserve s are more widely distributed than its oil reserves, and they appear less convenient as instruments of economic and political persuasion by opportunist powers. The crux is whether or not the world will accept all that a massive, if temporary, return to coal implies.Combustion of pulverized coal in steam generators to pro duce electricity is a 50-year-old, well-understood technique; it is undergoing continuous refinement to meet evolving environmental and economic criteria and is not found wanting. It is certainly the only technique available and technologically advanced enough to replace oil immediately on a large scale. Although it may take a decade to bring a new coal-fired powerplant into service, this delay is a reflection on nontechnical and administrative processes. Capital and operating costs of coal-fired powerplants are significant and subject to inflation, but, because of the accumulated experience in this field, the ability to control costs is better than for those energy processes which are less mature or still in embryo form. More exotic, soft energy systems, touted as the panacea for world energy problems, have still to prove themselves on the scale they are needed and under the stringent climatic and operating conditions coal-fired powerplants have already mastered."

Method - A direct approach to instrument users, initially by letter and later by telephone or personal contact was made. The resultant data was compiled to give specific use information on the seven instruments. During the course of the study attempts to evaluate the Griswold Gage were abandoned when it became apparent that the gage was not being commercially produced. One company is developing the gage for its own use. The information presented is the result of over 1200 inquiries.

Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force&apos;s Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond&apos;s recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A&apos;s ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpage in the area has controlled most of the water&apos;s movement. Pond recharge from Mine B has led to similar conditions, and the degraded water is moving towards a local public-supply well. Pumpage from Mine D&apos;s interceptor wells is controlling some, but not all, of the movement of recharge seepage from Mine D&apos;s ponds. Recommendations include the need for enhanced monitoring programs at each current mine site, development of a monitoring program for Mine C&apos;s area, development of water budgets for all mines, investigation of tailings pond compaction and sliming, establishment of mine closure plans for containment of recharged pond water, and the need for additional interceptor wells in several locations.

The Bureau of Mines developed computerized mathematical models to estimate the economic availability of Mesabi Range taconite concentrates; these are a quality model, a cost model, and an economic availability model. The quality model evaluates metallurgical test data; the cost model determines iron unit cost from mining and processing cost data; and the economic availability model determines quantity from geologic and ore quality data. By correlating all of the physical resource quality factors and dimensional characteristics with the economic cost factors associated with producing iron ore pellets, these three models combine to establish a final relation between iron ore reserve quantities and iron unit cost.

THE property of Howey Gold Mines, Limited is situated at Red Lake, Ontario, one hundred and seventy-five miles east of Winnipeg and eighty miles north of the Canadian National Railway line. The mine has been a continuous producer since April, 1930, and at present is hoisting 1,350 tons of ore per day. The shaft consists of three compartments (see Figure 1, sketch B). Hoisting is done by two skips in balance, one of which is interchangeable with a cage. Sinking had been carried out at three different periods. From the surface to the 550-foot level, the sets had been spaced at seven-foot intervals, from the 550-to the 1,060-foot level at six feet, and from the 1,060-to the 1,500-foot level at five feet. During the five years of operation, the shaft had become so badly worn, due to spill from the tipples and, to a certain extent, from the loading pockets, that re-timbering was considered necessary. It should be explained that no crushing is done underground because of the ad verse effect this would have on the efficiency of the sorting. The grizzly rail clearance above the ore pockets is fourteen inches and consequently the ore hoisted is extremely coarse. More than average spill from the loading pockets and tipples under such conditions is inevitable, and it is debatable whether underground crushing with consequent increased sorting costs would not be justified. The cost of complete re-timbering according to standard practice would have been prohibitive both directly and indirectly: A lengthy shut-down of the shaft, with the consequent disorganization of the staff and workmen, could not be considered. Accordingly, it became necessary to devise some method of repair that could be carried to completion in a very limited period of time. The shaft timber for the first 250 feet was not in need of repair. From the 250-foot to the 1,060-foot level the wall plates, posts, and blocking were in good condition. These had been protected by a one-inch plank lining put in at various periods during the past three years without interfering with hoisting operations. The end plates and dividers, however, could not be protected in this manner because of the lack of skip clearance. It was decided that, if the dividers in this section could be replaced, the shaft would be as satisfactory as if completely re-timbered. Several factors had to be taken into consideration in deciding on a suit-able method of repair. In the first place, the tipple plates had to be re-designed. To complete the job in a reasonable time, not only had work to be done on the tipple, but simultaneously from several points in the shaft itself. Since all power cables, pipe lines, etc., were in the manway compartment of the shaft, this compartment had to be left undisturbed.

When a company like Lonmin, the third largest platinum producer in the world, is mining one of the most precious metals in the world, time is money. Every piece of equipment is expected to be in top shape because every minute of downtime can add up to lost profit. Two different types of platinum ore are mined and processed by Lonmin, namely Merensky and UG2. Merensky has a grade of 3.5 g/t (0.1 oz/st) and UG2 has a grade of 4.5 g/t (0.13 oz/st). The mine also produces platinum group metals (PGM), which consist of platinum, osmium, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. Although South Africa has more than 80 percent of the world?s PGM reserves, these minerals are very scarce. Lonmin is considered a low-cost producer of these minerals, generating 21.5 t (694,000 oz) of platinum and 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of PGMs in 2012. So when the company?s Karee K3 concentrator plant in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa, was experiencing high operating costs on the transfer points, a solution was needed.

"The worldwide demand for ornamental stones in building construction is motivating the use of their wastes, generated during fabrication, to produce compound stones. This work has as its objective to investigate the production of an ornamental compound marble (OCM) under vacuum and compression processing of a polyester matrix composite with addition of marble waste as load and as filler. Square OCM composite plates were subjected to compression and flexural mechanical tests. Samples were analyzed to obtain the density and water absorption. The OCM composites presented properties within the expected range of an artificial stone.IntroductionMarble is a limestone, composed mainly of calcite, more or less crystallized by metamorphism that ranges from granular to compact in texture. It has a density 2.7 g/cm3 and its porosity is approximately 0.4%. The UNI 8458 standard defined marble as: ""every crystalline rock constituted mainly by minerals with a Mohs hardness equal to 3-4"". In marble production around70 - 75% of whole extract material is lost in byproducts generation [1,2].In function of large volume of residues generated, the ornamental stones industry has attracted ever more the attention of environmentalists [3].Actually the marble can be pulverized to obtain calcium carbonate for industrial applications. It is also possible to obtain a thinner powder to produce concretes [l]. Some authors study the use of stone residues in concrete mortars and ceramic bricks, getting better properties to these materials [3,4].The marble residues can be also used in engineered stones, or ''agglomerated"" stones, production. The most common engineered stones in the market consist, like a polymer concretes, in polymer matrix composites incorporating petreous components. In the formulation of the engineered stones, the particulate or granular petreous components are the result of fragmentation or trituration processes to which natural stones were submitted to [ 5]."

"To receive regulatory approval for a new coal mining operation in North America, extensive investigations of feasibility and potential environmental impacts, including ground deformations, are required. Figure 1 shows pictures from mine sites and an example mine map with the planned panel layout for one seam of the multi-seam longwall operation considered.The cumulative mined coal thickness of 22 meters in some areas of the operation requires a comprehensive forecast of expected ground movements and subsidence impacts (e.g., subsidence, slope, displacement, curvature and strain). In the frame of the impact study, the prediction of these impact factors was conducted by DMT using the computer program SPS 4D, based on the Ruhrkohle modeling method by Ehrhardt and Sauer (1961).This paper briefly presents the modeling method and explains the benefits and possibilities for its international application. Information gathered from literature studies on subsidence in North America were incorporated into the initial model parameterization. The article shows the ways in which the observed influences of mountainous topography on surface displacements and deformations can be considered by an extension of the subsidence prediction model and integration of DEM information.SUBSIDENCE MODELFor the calculation of mining-induced subsidence and deformation, DMT has developed subsidence prediction software SPS 4D, which is built according to the stochastic prediction model by (Ehrhardt and Sauer, 1961). The model is based on the subsidence theory by (Knothe, 1953) with a specific parametrization of the stochastic influence function and includes enhancements for dynamic subsidence calculations after (Sroka, 1978). In Europe, mainly in Germany and Poland, the model is approved by the authorities as a standard model for subsidence prediction in mining areas. However, extensive research within R&D activities has shown the possibility to predict mining-induced subsidence considering the specific mining conditions in North America (Zimmermann and Fritschen, 2007)."
