This paper presents a modelling tool that can be used to predict the behaviour of solvent extraction processes. In particular, this model allows calculating metal extraction efficiency as a function of pH, solvent flowrate, stripping flowrate and aqueous feed flowrate in the mixers-settlers. Gas and coal dust, as potential harmful elements (PHEs) produced during mining, are considered two serious threats to the safe mining and the health of miners because of its explosive and pathogenic properties. To solve this problem, compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology was used to control the gas and coal dust in excavation working face in this study, and spray testing platform and wind tunnel were used to investigated the suppression effect for gas and coal dust. In addition, sink test, and agglomeration experiments were also used to analyse its suppression mechanism. Testing results show that the dust reduction efficiencies of compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology for four different particle sizes were 80 per cent, 91.43 per cent, 94.74 per cent and 94.46 per cent, and improved by 14 per cent, 10.86 per cent, 8.42 per cent and 4.25 per cent compared to water spraying. Moreover, the gas suppression efficiency also can be increased more than 20 per cent. Sink test, and agglomeration experiments results show that compound reagent improves the spreading efficiency of the liquid on the surface of the coal by changing its wettability, and this process can not only slow down the desorption rate of gas by forming a water-sealing effect in the coal surface indicated, but also promote the agglomeration of fine-grained coal dust.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is a gold mine that is located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Drilling and blasting activity is applied in order to support mining production. Drilling and Blasting (D&B) planning is conducted by its engineers. A drilling and blasting contractor conducts drilling and blasting activity. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of the scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) in explosive charging sheet application to increase blast efficiency. The function of the scaled depth of burial is to maintain stemming height above explosive charge in order to prevent the ‘over energy’ condition, to reduce the excessive fly rock possibility, to maintain rock fragmentation (digger’s productivity) and to increase blast efficiency. The focus of this paper is to implement the scaled depth of burial as a reference in D&B planning and practice, especially in designing stemming height. The purpose of this paper is to validate that the scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool in D&B practice in PT.IMK. However, scaled depth of burial cannot applied as an engineering tool to determine stemming height above explosive charge for trim blastholes and secondary blasting area. In general, the implementation of the scaled depth of burial in PT.IMK is applicable for production blastholes (ore and waste blasting). In conclusion, it is clear that scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool to create explosive charging sheet and also to increase blast efficiency (ore and waste blasting) in PT.IMK.

This paper provides a logical approach to developing a TSF design concept through: • Identifying key properties of tailings and containment structures; • Reviewing underlying principles for effective operation; • Showing how these apply to select an appropriate TMS; and • Demonstrating how to align the TMS to site-specific constraints and TSF design. This approach follows a path of rigorous data analysis independent of discharge parameters (whether low-density slurry, paste or cake disposal) to select the most cost-effective and sustainable approach for any given material or site.

Plans are underway to extend commuter rail service underground into downtown San Francisco. The Salesforce Transit Center (STC) was completed in 2018 and will serve as a new transit hub, including a commuter rail station after two future connecting tunnel segments are completed. The northern segment, known as the Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX), which will extend the rail line from its current terminus at 4th and King Streets to the STC, is currently in Preliminary Engineering. The southern segment, the subject of this paper, is a 1.6-mile tunnel known as the Pennsylvania Avenue Extension (PAX), which is currently in the pre-environmental planning stage, with alternative alignments under evaluation including single bore versus twin bore options. This paper discusses project challenges, including highly variable tunneling conditions in soil and rock, a congested urban project site with limited space for construction staging, alignment crossings of large existing buried infrastructure, and complicated interfaces with future and existing rail operations.

In open pit mining, ore and waste are hauled outside of the excavation area by trucks that move along a system of ramps. The design of these ramps must be carefully addressed because they have to comply with geomechanical constraints to ensure the stability of the pit walls, provide access to the different levels and phases, but also maximise the value of the extracted ore and reduce the extraction of waste. Because an optimisation approach able to deal with the design of the full ramp system seems to be out of reach at the moment, this paper addresses the problem of designing one ramp providing access to a single pushback, which has been determined beforehand. The optimisation objective is therefore to find a ramp that gives access to one given potential volume, while minimising its impact on the economic value of the volume. Two versions of the problem are formalised. One version allows the extraction of ore and waste only if this extraction is necessary for the ramp system. This version somehow minimises the intrinsic value of the ramp system. In the second version, it is possible to extract more than is needed by the ramp system. For instance, this takes into account the possibility of attaining ore on the wall opposite to the ramp as soon as the ramp reaches its level. In the setting mentioned above, the contribution of this work is three-fold. First, the computational complexity of the two different versions of the problem is presented and discussed; in particular, they are shown to be NP-hard. Second, compact integer programs modelling these two versions are proposed. Third, an efficient GRASP algorithm able to cope with the large instances of the problem is proposed. To assess the proposed approaches, the models and algorithms are applied to real instances with an off-the-shelf solver, illustrating and discussing their potential and relevance for the two versions of the problem. They are also compared with other approaches from the literature in terms of value and resulting designs.

Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. The Beverley uranium mine û now in production in the remote north of South Australia at1000 tonnes per annum û was established to meet a projected, but little-recognised shortfallin primary supply of uranium for the nuclear industry in the early part of the 21 st century. Inthe context of AustraliaÆs lack of bi-partisan support for uranium mining and the nuclearindustry, a four to five year window of opportunity existed from 1996 to establish the mine.During this period, Beverley achieved a number of firsts including: the first ISL mine inAustralia; the largest ISL mine in the world and the first to produce more than 500 tonnes ofuranium in its first year; the first to be established under a new Native Title regime in SouthAustralia; and the first to be established under a revised South Australian Mining Act.Beverley was brought into production against the background of: hostile opposition fromanti-nuclear activists; a suspicious and at-times hostile media; a regulatory and politicalcommunity that was unfamiliar with ISL mining; commercially unsophisticated Aboriginalgroups; an inexperienced engineering industry; and the vagaries of development in a remote,semi-arid location with neither population nor infrastructure. The lessons that can be learnedfrom Beverley showed that û like much in life û flexibility and timing are crucial.

Previous testing was performed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to improve longwall dust control using underside shield sprays with a longwall directional spray system. This testing provided encouraging results toward respirable dust exposure reductions for longwall personnel, achieving as high as 99% dust reduction at some sampling locations along the longwall personnel walkway. Additional laboratory testing was conducted to test these underside shield sprays in conjunction with a shearer-clearer spray system located on the longwall shearer body. The purpose of this testing was to determine if the underside shield sprays interacted positively or negatively with the shearerclearer sprays. Results from this testing indicate that while the shearerclearer system influences where the respirable dust particles are directed, underside shield sprays can still lower respirable dust exposure for longwall personnel.

This paper describes an installation of a medium-voltage adjustable frequency motor drive (AFD) on a high starting torque regrinding mill. This type of application is typically found in the mineral industry dealing with hard ore. The AFD electrical architecture is introduced from line to load. The type of closed loop encoder feedback motor control algorithm is briefly described. The results of the AFD motor identification auto-tuning are compared against the manufacturer’s supplied data. The motor drive performance results are shown for pre-ramp DC fluxing, high starting torque with overload current, excessive load torque stall condition, and blocked rotor. The instrumentation and arrangement for the two watt-meter method to capture low frequency data are presented. The data shown is from the input power quality meter, the AFD computer tool, the output motor protection relay, an oscilloscope, and load shaft connected strain gauge (rotating telemetry for torque assessment). These types of high starting torque constant torque loads are found in mining and process industry applications employing AC adjustable frequency drives. Using field results should help demystify the use of voltage matching output transformers in AFD applications including constant torque loads

In the modern world of demolition safety is paramount and unnecessary or unquantifiable risks are not accepted (FasterCapital, 2024) and all risks must be kept As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) (BSI, 2017). This principle has led to a huge reduction in deaths in the last 50 years and the statistics continue to improve although this is starting to plateau (Beal, 2007). Under normal circumstances, this is now simply part of the normal way work is done and systems are in place to ensure both safety and economic profits are assured. What happens when the environment is less controlled and risks are unknown, such as after a natural disaster, war, an accident or a stand-up from a failed demolition attempt? A dangerous structure cannot responsibly be left alone with a fence around it so some action must be taken, but how can this be done safely and responsibly? An incident in Didcot, England in which half of a power station’s boiler house being prepared for an explosive demolition collapsed suddenly, killing four men in 2016 provides a useful case study of how technology, creativity and planning can be used to conduct complex demolition fully remotely to avoid any further risk to life.

The demand for steel products in modern society is prompting the iron ore industry to optimise their operations to ensure sustainability of fines and lump products. One of the key components in the iron ore transportation chain are belt conveyors. The energy consumption of modern belt conveyor systems has reduced considerably over the past few decades, however, there is still significant scope for further reductions, especially when heavily loaded long overland belt conveyors are considered. A new rail based continuous bulk material transportation system has been developed by researchers at the University of Newcastle to reduce the energy consumption of heavily loaded and long overland conveyors. The Rail-Running Belt Conveyor technology is a state-of-the-art continuous belt conveying technology which provides an innovative and novel departure from conventional continuous bulk material transportation systems with significant energy and economic benefits. This paper presents an overview of a Rail-Running Belt Conveyor variant which considers an enclosed belt. Enclosed belt conveying has the benefits of encapsulating the bulk material, and thereby reducing dust emissions and moisture ingress, in addition to being able to negotiate smaller radius horizontal and vertical curves leading to greater flexibility. To quantify the primary differences between conventional conveying technologies, the Denver office of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (USA) developed a case study for an 11 km long conveyor. The conveyor design throughput was 2750 t/h and included a small net elevation loss of 10 m. When considering CAPEX the Rail-Running Pipe Conveyor equipment supply cost is approximately 45 per cent of the cost of a conventional pipe conveyor, while savings upwards of US$50M emerge for CAPEX combined with five years of OPEX. The savings vary with the topography and density of the bulk commodity, with iron ore generally showing increased savings because the high bulk density increases rubber losses in conventional conveyors.

The DC Water and Sewer Authority's Long Term Control Plan includes tunnels, sewer separation, pumping station rehabilitation and green infrastructure to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges to the District waterways. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a deep, large sewer tunnel that will reduce CSO discharges; signifi- cantly mitigate known chronic flooding in the Northeast Boundary drainage area and improve the water quality of the Anacostia River. This paper presents the unique combination of Owner and Contractor perspectives of the entire Project from conception through procurement, execution, and contract management, providing lesson learned, chal- lenges encountered, and solutions implemented to deliver the Project successfully.

A triaxial procedure is described for measuring the modulus of elasticity and Possion's ratio of stress relief cores , that is , the concentric hole cores obtained by the overcoring technique . The elastic constant determinations can be made at stress levels comparable with those encountered in underground mining . The results from tests on an aluminum alloy calibration specimen and four rock specimens are included .

In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.

Shale gas wells drilled in longwall chain pillars are influenced by longwall mining. Longwall mining on each side of the chain pillars can create overburden movements and induce deformations in gas well casings. If the deformations result in a casing breach, intrusive shale gas could leak into the longwall mine with serious safety consequences. This study concerns five shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels in the Pittsburgh coal seam under a cover depth of 670 ft and a mining height of 7 ft. The gas wells were constructed with typical casing design, but a casing cementing alternative with uncemented production casings was practiced. Four production casings were uncemented, and one production casing was unintentionally cemented with good quality cement to a 535-ft depth and low-quality cement stringers from a 444- to 535-ft depth. The longwall faces passed by the shale gas wells as each adjacent longwall panel retreated. Production casings were surveyed by a multi-finger caliper after each panel was mined. No deformation was detected in the four uncemented production casings, but small deformations were detected in the partially cemented production casing. The maximum measured deformation in the cemented production casing was 0.05 in. after first panel mining and 0.06 in. after second panel mining. The casing deformations were also predicted by the FLAC3D model set up on site-specific overburden geology. The predicted deformations were in good agreement with the measurements in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. All five shale gas wells resumed normal production after being temporarily plugged during the period of mine-by. This study provides a successful demonstration of the effectiveness of a casing cementing alternative for decoupling production and intermediate casing, and thus minimizing the influence of longwall mining in the shale gas wells drilled through longwall chain pillars.

Seismic challenges were at the forefront of design for two parallel replacement bridge structures over the Arkansas River as part of the I-30 Crossing Project in Little Rock, Arkansas. Although not an area of the country typically associated with high seismicity, proximity to the New Madrid Fault Zone resulted in design ground motions sufficient to trigger liquefaction in alluvial channel and point bar deposits. A detailed post-award subsurface investigation program utilized CPT with complimentary borings to obtain samples for laboratory testing to assess the continuity of potentially liquefiable layers, from which we concluded that continuous zones of liquefaction across the extent of the north approach could lead to lateral spreading towards the river. An overview of the foundation and superstructure design to resist lateral spreading forces in accordance with the latest published design guidelines and research is presented. Other seismic aspects of the design are covered including timber pile ground improvement to mitigate liquefaction at the north approach embankment and foundation input motions that differ from code-based ground surface motions due to foundation stiffness, strength, and geometry. The project showcases an example of successful collaboration between geotechnical and structural designers with contractor input to address seismic challenges in the South Central US. Furthermore, the importance of considering kinematic demands on columns and other superstructure components – not just foundations – is highlighted.

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is getting popular in deeper open pit mines as a suitable alternative to truck haulage because it offers a lower operating cost due to shorter haulage distance and less truck requirement. Semi-mobile in-pit crusher, currently the most popular IPCC system, is relocated every two to five years, and the short-term plan needs to be updated accordingly. To the best of our knowledge, short-term planning with IPCC is an area of research that has yet to be explored extensively, and hardly any model can generate a shortterm extraction sequence considering an IPCC. This research work proposes a mixed integer programming model to develop a short-term production plan within a time horizon of 12 months. The model's objective is to optimally allocate shovels to minimize the cost of material handling and maximize revenue subject to meeting plant requirements, maximum allowable tonnage variation and IPCC location constraints to achieve production and NPV targets set by the strategic plan. The proposed model will be implemented in an iron ore mine case study for verification. The model is developed and solved using MATLAB. The comparison of results between scenarios with and without IPCC justifies the use of IPCC in large open pit mines from a short-term perspective.
