The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

"This paper gives a brief introduction and presents recent enhancements in the MillMapper technology developed for thickness gauging and condition monitoring of liners in grinding mills used for mineral comminution. It also introduces the recent expansion of MillMapper functionality aimed at mill operational optimization. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces at feed, shell, and discharge ends with millimeter accuracy. Data capture takes nominally 5 minutes, hence interruption to mill operation is negligible.The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and discussion of recentlyimplemented innovations such as liner change out forecasting, automatic ball charge volume and weight measurement, and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement for mill operational control or load cell calibration are presented. Combined weight information provides control over load related issues such as load fill levels for relining, or start-up load after reline. Feature descriptions are followed by a listing of the numerous advantages over existing techniques and the benefits to operations. Results from the application of MillMapper are presented throughout.INTRODUCTIONThe need for thickness gauging of liners of grinding mills used for mineral comminution is well known but the task is rarely completed to a satisfactory standard. Liner failure resulting from excessive wear can have expensive consequences. Furthermore, mill performance as well as liner wear are known to be correlated to lifter bar geometry (Napier-Munn et al., 1999; Rajamanni et al., 2005). At present, the following techniques are routinely used to gauge the thickness of mill liners:1. Visual inspection;2. Ultrasonic thickness gauging (for steel liners); and3. Physical inspection (e.g. nail inserted in rubber liners)"

The Impala No. 1A ventilation shaft is located approximately 15 kms north of Rustenburg and is accessed via the R510road from Rustenburg to Northam/Thabazimbi. This situation is shown on the location plan in Figure 1. The geology at the site consists of an upper layer of black turf of about 1 metre in thickness, grading into weathered norite. The depth of weathering is generally less than 5 metres. Zones of deeper weathering may occur along fracture zones associated with faults and dykes. Groundwater occurs mainly within the weathered/fractured aquifer system. The ventilation shaft is a 5.1 m diameter upcast shaft ,and forms part of a system of ventilation shafts to complement the existing infrastructure as mining progresses down the new twin decline extension of Impala 1 shaft. The principal reason for these shafts is to lessen the risk of an extended RAW and also to counter the effects of the heat build-up as the mining goes deeper, with the resultant effect that the existing cooling centre (fridge plant) becomes more remote from activities. The No. 1A shaft (upcast) is positioned approximately 1,2 km on down dip from the main shaft and the No. 1Bshaft (downcast) approximately 1,2 km further. Geological information was used from a borehole 1,2 km away on strike from the upcast shaft. The first shaft (1A) is a 5,1 m diameter hole to be fitted with two 2,2 MW fans, whilst the second shaft (1B) is 4,1 m diameter to accommodate a 7MW fridge plant.

"The IREDES1 Special Interest Group (SIG) for drill rigs has been active since its launch during MineExpo 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. SIG for drill rigs is responsible for the development of an IREDES drill rig profile, including the exchange of production planning, performance, and quality reporting data between various kinds of drill rigs and the databases used by the operating mine. During 2001, a first draft of the drill rigs profile was jointly prepared by drill rig suppliers, mining companies, and third-party suppliers and reviewed during several SIG meetings. The profile for prototyping projects was released in mid-2002; the first official IREDES release was based on feedback received from these projects.In 2002, LKAB and Atlas Copco decided to carry out an IREDES prototyping project using the Simba L6C production drill rig. The goal was to verify the drill rig profile and identify potential problems prior to the official release. This was done by implementing the IREDES prototype version into LKAB’s production planning and Simba rig control systems. The Simba rig control system was designed to handle drill plan and logging information coming from the mine planning system. In parallel to this, the mine production system was adapted for drill plan export and logging data import in IREDES format.This paper presents the most recent results of the IREDES prototyping project. Results from late 2002 show that the basic architecture of the drill rig profile works and that a common language for data exchange, IREDES, will be a central requirement for future mine automation.As a result of the IREDES prototyping project, the IREDES standard was approved at the IREDES board meeting held at the 2003 CIM Annual Conference and Exhibition. Soon thereafter, IREDES compliant products, including drill rigs and mine production planning systems, were put on the market."

"More efficient drilling and blasting techniques have shown measurable improvements in throughput at the Barrick Goldstrike wet grinding mill.A decrease in throughput at the autoclave, due to increasingly hard ore, was identified in early 2002. A team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas participated closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative to ensure that it would address the needs of both groups, with the target of improving throughput in future years, despite the projected harder ores. Plant studies were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting could positively influence throughput. At the Goldstrike mill the greatest opportunity from the D2M initiative is realized on the hardest ore. Grinding throughput for softer ore, <15 kWh/st, can meet or exceed the downstream pressure oxidation requirements. Grinding throughput for harder ore, >15 kWh/st, is limited by the SAG milling capacity. Better fragmentation in the D2M ore, as demonstrated by image analysis, increased throughput 5% to 10% (25 to 50 stph) compared to the standard mining methods.Better fragmentation and a subsequent increase in mill throughput were achieved through the use of:1) Electronic caps for more precision and flexibility, as well as for allowing extremely fast shots.2) Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation (VOD), to provide for improved shock energy.3) Improved distribution of the explosives by decreasing pattern spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Goldstrike Open-Pit group, along with the Process division, began experimenting with novel blasting technology and techniques to improve mill throughput in the spring of 2001. The origins of mine closure practice have influenced the way in which it is implemented by companies and regulators. Mine closure practices essentially started developing in the 1970s in countries with advanced economies and mature mining industries. In these settings, the emphasis was justifiably placed on restoration of the landscape and an attempt was made to return to the ?natural? pre-mining land cover. These practices continued to evolve and incorporated socio-economic and cultural aspects, especially after the Brundtland Report in 1987 and the subsequent Earth Summit in 1992. Today mining is increasingly occurring in remote parts of developing countries where there may be significant need for infrastructure such as roads, clinics, and schools. The costs of returning land to low (economic) value pre-mining use may be far greater than establishing a viable postmining land use that could potentially add value to the community and take pressure off sites for greenfield development elsewhere. Furthermore, natural resource limitations (such as topsoil availability) may limit the degree to which the historical land cover can be re-established. Establishing post-mining land uses may aid in mitigating the loss of employment that is inevitable when mines close. Stakeholder participation in establishing post-mining land cover and land use options is critical for long-term success. Similarly, third parties must be identified to support the development of the post-mining land use This paper draws on the experience of the authors in several developing countries and presents a case for maximizing re-use of mining infrastructure. The paper does not advocate the adoption of poor rehabilitation standards, nor or the wholesale destruction of land capability, but rather leaving key infrastructure in place for post-mining use that may support sustainable development.

"The mining market is researching innovative methods to train the workforce for mining which is normally extremely difficult to get. Thus, the dynamic simulation-based technologies become an essential pillar to educate and train the inexperienced staff at the pace required by this industry. Even if Operator Training Simulator (OTS) systems are commonly used in most of industries, knowledge transmitted to operators are unfortunately not ""capitalized"" in general. The OTS systems are usually delivered as a single hardware and software platform and very little as a full service long-term.In this article, an integrated solution to increase the efficiency of the operators is proposed. This solution is based on the combination of dynamic simulation, processes knowledge, virtual reality and the knowledge capitalization through the creation of simulation scenarios and e-learning. The Codelco Ministro Hales plant simulation project for a copper concentrator plant is presented as a real life example.IntroductionDynamic and real-time process simulation have proven to be a must in the development of greenfield projects, providing mechanisms to design and test controls design, interlocks, start-up, shut down sequences and operator training, among others (see (McMillan, 2006) for further details). Early adopters of this technology were utility power plants; in the petrochemical industry have become a standard, and in the mining industry the use of dynamic simulations is growing, especially in new projects and training of operations personnel for the adoption of best practices and new technologies, see (Nikkhah & Anderson, 2001) and (Toro, Ortiz, & Yutronic, 2012).This paper outlines a solution that utilizes dynamic simulations as the base of an integrated platform for operational effectiveness, which takes into account the current scenario of new mining projects and operations, where high turn over rates and needs of specialized workforce have given a special value to this kind of technologies."

The rock mechanics approach to stability problems of steep rock slopes dealt with in this article has particular reference to the concept and methods of analysis developed by the Salzburg, Austria, school of rock mechanics. These theories are based on the principal postulate of the anistropy of the technological properties of in-situ rock masses. The present approach, which is more in line with geological engineering concepts, differs distinctively from the soil mechanics and engineering geological concepts commonly practiced in the United States. PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING APPROACH TO GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVAILABLE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS At the present time two different concepts are available for engineering analysis of underground structures and foundations in different earth material: soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Of these two branches, soil mechanics is, after 40 years of initially revolutionary and more recently evolutionary development, well established. Its principal concept of replacing in-situ soils or rock masses by perfectly homogeneous substitues has resulted in many practicable methods of analysis which, if applied with judgement, have resulted in successful applications throughout the world. Conversely, rock mechanics is still in the early stages of revolutionary development. Few, if any, standard concepts or methods of analysis have been established. Opinions vary widely. At present the professional background of an investigator very often determines the engineering concept to be applied to a particular problem, rather than its actual requirements if considered objectively. This paper stresses the rock mechanics or geological engineering point of view advocated by the Salzburg group. A review of the soil mechanics concepts is considered beyond the scope of this paper. The purpose of this symposium is to challenge industry to better air classification, and as a first step toward fulfillment, to spotlight three fairly recent, aerodynamically designed, highly efficient air classifiers. This discussion does not intend to imply that present practice is bad. Actually, when present air separators are used for the jobs for which they were originally designed, they give high production and uniform operation, with a minimum of maintenance. The customers of nonmetallic mineral pigment producers, however, are making increasing demands for finer products, such as 99.9 pct -20µ, which appears to be beyond the economic capabilities of standard air separators industrially used over the last 10 to 30 years. Here is an actual example. A 10-ft diam pebble mill is in closed circuit with a conventional 12-ft diam centrifugal air separator, grinding 20-mesh wollastonite to a series of fine grades up to 99.97 pct - U.S. No. 325 mesh (44µ). Fig. 1 shows variations in fineness of mill discharge (or air separator feed), recycle for regrinding (or air separator tails), and product as measured by a wet rotating sieve test. For example, when the mill is turning out a product 80 pct -325, the mill discharge or separator feed is 30 pct -325, and the coarse tailings or recycle is only 5 pct -325. Hence 25 pct of the 30 pct available is accepted as product. This is efficient separation, and the ratio of recycle to feed is only about 2: 1. How- ever, to make a product testing 99.97 pct -325 the separator feed is 62 pct -325 and the coarse tailing 60 pct -325. In this case the recycle ratio is about 13: 1 and the economic limit to produce fineness has been substantially reached with this given equipment and process arrangement.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. The Carbon Disclosure Project (the pre-eminent global initiative for institutional investor collaboration on climate change) groups the business risks (and opportunities) related to climate change into four categories: 1. Regulatory risks from tightening legislation (and opportunities for companies that can make the carbon market work for them), e.g. rising costs for carbon and energy-intensive processes. 2. Competitive risks & opportunities generated by a possible decline in customer demand for carbon/energy intensive products (and opportunities from a consequent rise in demand for efficient / low carbon products). 3. Reputational risks from perceived inaction on climate change (and benefits to those perceived to be ?solutions providers?). 4. Physical risks from changes to climatic patterns, e.g. asset damage from extreme weather events; project delays; water scarcity; resource risks as certain crops become no longer viable in certain areas and new supply chains become necessary; and potential human and socio-political impacts. All of these are already having repercussions for businesses in certain sectors and geographies. The understanding of specific impacts of climate change is still evolving but it is clear that climate change will have a material impact on the value of many businesses, either directly or indirectly. Many commentators and analysts consider that rising energy costs are likely to represent the most direct and immediate investment risk that climate change and the resulting regulatory responses will create for business in the near term. However, it is already possible to identify numerous examples of competitive and reputational risks and opportunities that are leading to significant value creation or destruction in business: the success of the Toyota Prius; the rush by the UK?s leading supermarket retailers to ?green? their brands; and the surging fortunes of companies involved in the manufacture of renewable energy generation equipment, are all manifestations of this trend. In addition, the potential physical impacts of climate change are also making themselves felt in certain sectors: an example is the Australian wine industry, suffering after an extreme and prolonged period of drought. THE PROJECT This paper describes a project undertaken for a multinational mining company to examine the physical risks from climate change across its international business operations. The study addressed 163 components of the business and included operating sites (mines, smelters, and refineries), key transport routes (road and rail) and port links. The inclusion of the transport networks and ports is extremely important; key transport routes (e.g. a key railway link) may often be impacted (e.g. by flooding) far more than individual sites due to their large geographic exposure and multiple potential failure points. Extreme weather events causing loss of life and major economic damage continue to be front page news. According to the World Meteorological Organization, January to July 2007 ?was marked by record weather extremes in many regions across the world.? Inevitably, the associated phenomena are starting to impact business and investments, not so much as deal breakers, but in changing the parameters of risk management and the approaches required to devise mitigation measures. EXAMPLES OF EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS No one event can be presented as directly attributable evidence of climate change, however climate change projections suggest that the frequency and severity of many extreme weather events can be expected to increase in a warming world. In August 2003, a heat wave struck Europe, with temperatures as high as 42°C (108°F). As summer temperatures in much of northern Europe rarely exceed 30°C (86°F), the area was unprepared for the disaster, and many thousands of deaths occurred. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage along the Gulf Coast of the United States, forcing the effective abandonment of south-eastern Louisiana (including New Orleans) for up to two months and damaging oil wells that resulted in increased oil prices. Katrina killed over 1,800 people and caused at least $75 billion in damages, making it one of the costliest natural disasters of all time. This was followed in September, by Hurricane Rita which left 119 people dead along the U.S. Gulf Coast, causing $9.4 billion in damage. In January 2006, hundreds of people were killed when Russia, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia experienced the coldest weather for decades. In summer 2007, dramatic floods in the south central region of England, UK left 350,000 people without drinking water and many without electricity. Transport infrastructure was severely disrupted; combined with floods which occurred earlier in the summer in Yorkshire (North England), the damage is estimated to total over £2 billion. ASSESSING RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE To date, only a minority of companies have attempted to quantify the risks from climate change. However, investors are seeking greater disclosure of climate change related risks and opportunities and it is expected companies that can demonstrate they are prepared for climate change will attract higher market valuations. Climate Change Threats A variety of climate change threats were examined for their potential to have a potential measurable impact on the mining company?s business operations. Those considered most significant were included in the study and are shown in Table 1 (see Appendix A). Certain threats can be considered as being cyclical in nature and the future predictions may suggest a change in the frequency and severity of such events (e.g. storms/hurricanes, rainfall, drought). However other threats are associated with a gradual change over time (e.g. loss of glaciers, loss of permafrost, sea level rises). A slightly different approach is needed to address this differing nature of the threats, as described subsequently. Climatic Regions Much of the research and data associated with climate change is collected and reported on a regional basis. An example of the climate change impacts predicted for a number of climatic regions is shown in Table 2 (see Appendix A).

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and a manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced in situ by oxidation of pyrite. In the absence of added acid, the optimum conditions are: a molecularratio of Mn02/FeS2 of about 1&#183;0, a temperature of about 1400 C., and an oxygen pressure between 25 and 90 lb./sq. in. Under these conditions, complete extraction of manganese is obtained in six hours leaching. An addition of sulphuric acid enables an Mn02/FeS2 ratio of 2&#183;0 to be used successfully.Manganous sulphate decreases in solubility with increase in temperature above 1000 C., but even when the solubility limit is reached during leaching, reaction to form MnS04 still proceeds, and on cooling the MnS04 redissolves.INTRODUCTIONMany manganese deposits contain secondary manganese oxide minerals which are difficult to concentrate. Considerable attention has therefore been given to their hydrometallurgical treatment. In most manganese oxide minerals, the manganese is quadrivalent and must be reduced to the divalent state for dissolution. Reduction and dissolution can be accomplished in a number of ways, one method being to use aqueous ferrous sulphate solutions.A possible source of ferrous sulphate is pyrite as it is known that ferrous ion is an intermediate product in the aqueous oxidation of pyrite. It was therefore thought possible, that by heating an aqueous suspension of manganese oxide and pyrite with oxygen, the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid formed from pyrite would provide the necessary leaching reagents for manganese in situ. The strain hardening associated with the creep of magnesium single crystals at room temperatu.Je was investigated by shear tests in which the direction of stressing was reversed a number of times after creep in a <100> direction. The strain hardening was strongly anisotropic; the largest amount occurring in the direction of flow and the least 180 deg to this. The time law for creep changed from a parabolic type to logarithmic for the first and subsequent reversals of stress. For a given stress the creep strain decreased significantly for the first and second reversals and then only slightly for subsequent reversals. The logarithmic creep constant a changed in a similar manner. A linear relationship was observed between the creep strain for a given reversal and the stress. The slope for the third reversal yielded a strain hardening coefficient 12 to 16 times greater than that observed for unidirectional flow. Al-though no recovery was observed upon resting at room temperature, the hardening resulting from stress reversals could be completely removed by heating to 450" C. PREVIOUS work1.&apos; indicated that the creep rate of magnesium single crystals tested in the temperature range of 78" to 364°K decreased with time. This was attributed to an increase in internal stress resulting from an accumulation of dislocations at internal obstacles. The object of the present investigation was to further evaluate the nature of this hardening by conducting tests in which the direction of stressing is changed after previous creep in shear in a given slip direction. Goldfields (Tasmania) Limited operates a small, high-grade underground gold mine on the West Coast of Tasmania, 30 kilometres north of Queenstown. The main orebody, Zone 96, was discovered in 1989, with major development work commencing in 1993. The mine was officially opened in July, 1996. Initial production came from a shallow orebody known as the Sill Zone, some 50 - 150 m below surface, which was accessed by a 1 in 8 decline. Zone 96 lies between 350 m and 550 m below the surface and is accessed by a 402 m deep, 3.2 m diameter internal shaft from the collar level located 100 m below surface. The main ore extraction system in Zone 96 is mechanised cut and fill, using high density paste fill. Run of mine ore and waste are hoisted in a single 5.5 tonne overturning skip, then trucked from the underground collar to the gold plant ROM pad or waste dump, respectively. Ground conditions in the mine vary with orientation and proximity to major faults. The gold is contained in a sequence of strongly altered volcanic rocks adjacent to the Henty Fault. Most of the gold is contained in massive quartz, ranging in width from 0.5 m to 7 m, which has been subjected to substantial faulting. Average mineable grade is about 27 grams gold per tonne. Ore reserves in 1996 proved an initial mine life of approximately 4.5 years at 90 000 ounces gold per annum, with significant potential for additional resources from extensions to Zone 96 and adjacent zones. The lease is located in an environmentally sensitive area and a very high standard of environmental management is an essential part of the operation. This paper describes the relevant aspects of mining at Henty including grade control, ground support, backfill placement and environmental management.

Using mines in Canada, Boart Longyear, a leading provider of drilling services and products, has put its Stage 3 Coring Bit to the test and each time the bit has passed the test with great success. After more than a year in the field at a major mine operation in Sudbury, Canada, the Stage3 coring bit broke life records to become recognized as the most productive design in the industry. In addition to the proven advantage seen in regular bit life increases of as much as 300 percent in some cases, the design is quickly being recognized for its cost-saving operational impact. In Sudbury, the mine operation realized actual cash savings of more than C$45,000 within an eight-month period by making the switch to Stage3 bits. For years, the Sudbury Basin team has relied on the Alpha Extended Crown bit with the Express Waterway geometry option, ordering approximately 500 units per year. This 07 COM ECEX configuration performed well in medium-hard, non-abrasive to ultra-hard, non-abrasive formations with an average bit life of 150 m (490 ft). While satisfied with the performance of the Alpha Ex-tended Crown, the team agreed to put the new Alpha Stage3 to the test. Boart Longyear?s field engineers supplied five drill sites with Alpha Stage3 bits in a 07 COM configuration. After thoroughly testing the Stage3, the results were clear. Even with the well-known performance and versatility offered by the previously preferred configuration, the Stage3 set a new standard of bit performance. The new bit maintained its cutting edge for up to three times longer than the Alpha Extended Crown, a significant performance increase when compared to the 07 COM ECEX.

"Abstract: The combination of failure in joints of diaphragm walls and their exposure to water pressure may have far reaching effects ranging from water leakage to the risk of catastrophic loss of stability for the retaining wall and civil structures behind it. Investigations of imperfect joints in diaphragm walls have led to the development and testing of a quality tool to monitor the joint integrity of diaphragm walls during construction. By applying independent mechanical sensors (“joint inspector”) to the steel frame of hydraulic or mechanical grabs, it is now possible to record the surface conditions of exposed primary joints during the construction of secondary panels. This allows for the implementation of corrective action during the construction process should joint quality not indicate a watertight connection to the adjacent panel. The joint inspector, used for different types of stop ends, was tested on a full scale test field at several construction sites. The implementation of this new quality tool drives a new quality standard for deep excavations in inner city areas.General introduction to diaphragm wallsDiaphragm walls are reinforced concrete elements constructed using bentonite slurry to temporarily support an open trench in the ground. They are used in two main fields of application in civil construction, as foundation elements for vertical and horizontal loads (barrettes) and as retaining walls for excavation pits.Particularly for deep excavation pits in inner city areas, diaphragm walls are used as temporary or permanent walls of retaining walls. Alternative retaining wall systems would be secant pile walls, sheet piles or soldier piles, but these have disadvantages in structural strength when compared to diaphragm walls. If the vertical load of existing buildings next to the excavation pit has to be accommodated, the most practical solution can be found using diaphragm walls supported by prestressed anchors, steel struts or slabs."

"A new mineral sands operation is being developed in Georgia by Southern Ionics, Inc. (SII). Prevailing mineralogy and certain design constraints required detailed testing and circuit analysis to create a robust separation processes. The floating wet concentrator plant (WCP) and mineral separation plant (MSP) flow sheets were designed based on historical testing information and recent SII test campaigns on various composite feed samples. The flow sheets were finalized through rigorous process and orebody sequence modeling.The process uses traditional physical separation equipment; however a new MT spiral, the MG12, was selected for use on board the WCP for roughing duty. The MG12 spiral is a two-stage, twelve-turn spiral that has been proven to achieve very high recoveries of heavy minerals. The floating plant includes feed desliming operations, a central MT surge bin for optimum spiral circuit feed control and ancillary operations for concentrate and tailings handling. Scrubbed heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is then transported to the MSP for concentration of the titanium and zirconium bearing mineral fractions.The testing, flowsheet development, and plant design will be described and explained, and a brief summary of the current project status will be given.IntroductionSouthern Ionics Inc. "As mine size and tonnage continues to increase, material handling/processing equipment has also increased in size with 400 MT haul trucks, 2000 KW crushers, 12 M SAG/AG mills, 8.5 M ball mills, 3000 M3 flotation cells and 12.5 MW HPGR’s all with planned designs to increase in size further. Related equipment including vibrating screens have also increased in size with screens seeing feed rates of 3000 MTPH. Open circuit SAG Pre-Crush and closed circuit HPGR flowsheets are becoming more common with large screening requirements. Large multi-slope (banana) or horizontal screens are commonly used for these applications, however as the size of these screens has increased, the number and size of the brute force/overhead exciters has increased but with limitations. An example is a SAG discharge screen that will see surges of material from the SAG mill which overload the screen, reducing the screen stroke or throw causing a large reduction in screen efficiency with excessive fines & moisture in the screen oversize feed to the pebble crushing circuit. This paper will present some actual examples of the use of Two-Mass screens as a solution to these overloading problems and the advantages of Two-Mass screens in other high tonnage applications.Brute Force Drive Compared to Two Mass Drive Vibrating ScreensThe standard single mass screen as depicted by figure 1 is generally recognized in the mining industry. It is characterized by the screen body – labeled as the single mass (Mt) that is supported by isolation springs (Kiso). Have you ever had a neighbor complain about a blast one day, but says the next day’s blast was better, even though the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) increased? How about neighbors that complain about a small trimming shot, but don’t complain about a big production shot? Have you ever reduced the pounds/delay and gotten more complaints ? Mine operators are often bewildered when trying to correlate blast design parameters to homeowner complaints. When complaints come, standard practice is to set up a seismograph in the neighbor’s yard to monitor the blast. Immediately after the blast, the neighbor usually reappears from the house wanting to know the seismograph reading. When told that the PPV was 0.1 in/set, well below damage levels, the homeowner explodes saying “Your machine is wrong”. Perhaps he is right. Understanding why people complain about blasting is not about PPV, it’s all about structural response. People could care less about how much the ground vibrates; they only care about how much their house vibrates. In this paper we will examine the primary factors that control structural response. Through the use of a large array of digital seismographs, the effects of two production blasts on a community surrounding a quarry are studied. The predicted structural response resulting from each blast is calculated at 175 seismograph locations. The predicted response is then correlated to previous research on human perceptibility to vibrations. The results of this analysis and correlation give a better understanding of what the residents actually feel in their homes. The detonations of two single-hole signature blasts are also recorded by the array of seismographs revealing the dynamic characteristics of the geology ‘surrounding the quarry. Once the influence of the geology was understood, blasts were configured to disrupt the natural rhythm of the site through the use of millisecond delays.

"In 2011, a site study indicated that the application of Honeywell’s Multivariable Predictive Control Technology (MPC) to the Goldex processing facility would provide significant opportunities for improvement. Grinding MPC was implemented in the SAG Mill in June 2015. This pilot application, called Phase 1, featured one of the first Multivariable Predictive Controllers to be installed in a Canadian mineral processing plant. Since the implementation of MPC, gold recovery from the gravity circuit has increased. MPC contributed to a decrease in flotation feed particle size (120 to 112 µm) and an increase in the SAG feed tonnage (8.5% increase). MPC also increased and stabilized the % solids of the SAG feed, which can have an impact on cost reduction (mechanical maintenance). Additionally, MPC increased productivity, providing grinding operators with more time to perform other tasks. Further anticipated benefits include the standardization of the grinding circuit operation from one team to the next, thereby minimizing circuit disturbances resulting from different operating philosophies. This paper will discuss the advanced control project development and justification, the technology and rapid implementation process, the performance results and the benefits obtained.IntroductionGoldex is an underground mine located near Val-d’Or that is owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM). Between 2008 and 2011, mining focused on the Goldex Extension Zone (GEZ). In 2011, the project was halted due to geotechnical problems; operations ceased until late 2013. Goldex operations resumed in September 2013 with the M and E zones, for which there were 0.7M gold ounces of proven and probable reserves, 2.1M ounces of measured and indicated resources and 1.2M ounces of inferred resources, totalizing 4M ounces. Life expectancy was extended until 2024."
