"Traditionally, the geologists of Canada have been occupied with the tasks of finding new mineral bodies, locating gas and oil fields or hunting for economic deposits of industrial minerals. A very minor percentage of graduate geologists have applied their skills to solution of the ""urban blight"" or employing their understanding of ""Nature"" for the optimum use of land by mankind. However, things are changing quickly. The role of the geologist in the planning process is being established. It is an exciting time! Geologists are now being consulted on a wide range of urban planning problems. These vary, tor example, from assessment of the geological environment for the new communities of Erin Mills and Meadowvale, which will have total populations in excess of 100,000 people (truly a satellite city), to a complete geological/ geohydrological assessment of the new sanitary landfill for the city of Guelph.Use of geologic techniques and methods for urban studies must be enhanced with certain skills not taught, in the past, to the geologist. These include airphoto interpretation, soil mechanics, geohydrology, municipal engineering and highway engineering to mention a few. The geologist has the unique training to assess the natural environment and to discover, warn and explain the implications of man's attempt to command his environment."

Rod Mill Grinding is an important and fundamental step of the concentrating process in Marcona Mining Company's plants at San Nicolas Bay, Peru. This Paper summarizes experience in regard to consumption and specifications of grinding rods based on twelve years operation of the grinding circuits. Marcona operates a Plant complex producing 10 million tons per year of beneficiated iron ore products including pellets, sinter feed concentrates, high grade concentrates as slurry and filter cake. Processing capacity is 15 million tons per crude ore per year of which 13 million are around in rod mills. A continuous testing program was carried out over the years. Initial studies of daily production operations gave indications of poor grinding rates in relation to mill size and power consumption, with a high rate of broken liners and rods. The broken nieces of rod were not automatically expelled and further interfered with grinding efficiency, while replacement of liners caused unwarranted do n tire. Objectives were to improve all phases of the Process by studying the effects of changes in rod diameter, length, alloy constituents, and volume and weight of rod charge.

"One of the major problems discussed over the last years is a possibility of mining of seafloor massive sulfide deposits. In spite of the pessimistic points of view on their commercial development, they are still of great interest and continue to be studied (Hannington et al., 2011). Recently, Barriga (2012) paid special attention to the underestimated amount of massive sulfide hydrothermal fields and pointed to the importance of the buried fields and subseafloor mineralization.This study examines the geochemistry of seafloor and subseafloor precipitates collected at the Peterburgskoe (19°52´ N) and Irinovskoe (13°20´ N) hydrothermal fields (MAR) during the 34th cruise of the R/V Professor Logatchev in 2011. These fields were discovered by the Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition in 2010 and 2011, respectively (Shilov et al., 2011; Beltenev et al., 2012). The Peterburgskoe field, associated with basalts, is located 16 km west of the main rift valley at the depth of 2800-3100 m at the junction of a large non-transform discontinuity with the second rift ridge parallel to the rift valley. The Irinovskoe field occurs at depths of 2700-2850 m and has a northwestern satellite sulfide site, both confined to an oceanic core complex (MacLeod et al., 2009), which includes mafic and ultramafic rocks. The details of geological structure of the fields may be found in the relevant papers.Diverse samples were collected from the hydrothermal fields: seafloor massive sulfides, Fe-hydroxide crusts, SiO2-rich sulfide-bearing precipitates, and subseafloor mineralized rocks (Melekestseva et al., 2014a). Massive sulfides may be subdivided on the Fe-rich and Cu-rich types. The marcasite-pyrite, pyrite, hydroxide-marcasite, and chalcopyrite-pyrite (Fe-rich) mineral types are dominant in the Peterburgskoe field at lesser amounts of sphalerite-hydroxide-chalcopyrite and pyrite-covellite-chalcopyrite (Cu-rich) massive sulfides. The mineralized sulfide-talc-carbonate-chlorite, chlorite-sulfide-quartz, and hematite-sulfide-quartz rocks host stringer-disseminated sulfides including chalcopyrite, covellite, and pyrite."

The Freeport McMoRan Bagdad Solvent Extraction (SX) circuit is the oldest plant of its kind currently in operation. The plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second SX-EW operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) plant near Miami, Arizona. Over the years of operation, the configuration of the SX has gone through many changes to accommodate a variety of pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades and flows. Although modifications to the original plant configuration are numerous, the Bagdad SX circuit has maintained its general form consisting of multiple long and narrow settlers. The unique configuration of the Bagdad SX circuit presents a variety of operational advantages and challenges; however, it continues to operate at a level recognized in the industry as excellent.

A moderate thermophilic microorganisms, has been isolated (45?) from a typical sulphide mine in the region of Mo Jiang located in the southwest of China. The culture has been used to extract copper from chalcopyrite concentrates obtained from De Xing copper mine. The majority of experiments were carried out in 300mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 150mL volumes of mineral suspension. Effects of some variable parameters such as solids concentration, pH and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite obtained from De Xing copper mine were investigated. For a given concentrate the most important factor affecting the fractional copper extraction was the size of the mineral particles. The overall rate of leaching was found to be limited by the area of mineral surface. The attack started in cracks and genetic defects and finally reached the whole chalcopyrite surface. As a consequence of this, the ore showed strongly cracks. The additive of ferrous sulfate increases the bacteria activity, but did not improve chalcopyrite bioleaching. The results indicate that the nature and relative proportions of the various minerals present have been shown to be important factors.

The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold recovery technology from oxidized gold-copper ore of one of deposits in Russian Federation. Gold and copper grades in the ore are 9.5 g/t and 0.4%, respectively. Various options of flowsheets, such as direct cyanidation, thiourea leaching, flotation and gravity concentration followed by subsequent cyanidation of con-centration products, were tested. It was established that gravity-cyanidation technology with filtra-tion leaching tails and the use of solutions in the recirculation is the optimal option for ore treatment. The proposed flowsheet provides gold recovery for 91.0% at NaCN consumption 2.5 kg/t ac-cording to the results of pilot testing. Ammonia-cyanide gold leaching was also examined. In comparison with cyanidation, gold leaching solution in system NaCN-NH4OH-(NH4)2CO3 allows NaCN consumption to be reduced three times from 4.5 kg to 1.5 kg per 1 ton of the ore and provides the same gold recovery. Based on the laboratory and pilot plant tests results of gravity-cyanidation technology of gold dissolution, process design criteria were developed.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la influencia de los costos de producción sobre el nivel de los precios a largo plazo a través de dos formas: en el caso de las minas de producción, cuando los precios son muy bajos y no guardan relación con los costos, las menos competitivas se ven obligadas a cerrar y en las de costo medio a postergar sus proyectos de exploración y desarrollo, ocasionándose muchas veces una disminución en la vida de las minas.

The Bureau of Mines substantially reduced shale degradation in a coal mine by two spray coat applications of a water-base epoxy sealant. More than 12,700 square feet of passageways were treated, and in 18 months only one failure occurred. This failure was due to improper spray application, Material costs averaged 13 cents per square foot, and labor costs were 7 cents per square foot. Labor included moving all materials into the mine, the setup time for each of the areas coated, and application of coatings.

THIOPAQ technology developed and marketed by PAQUES Bio Systems in Balk, Netherlands, has been successfully used at commercial scale at the Budelco zinc refinery in the Netherlands for the treatment of contaminated groundwater since 1992. In essence, THIOPAQ technology consists of two biological process steps in series: sulfate reduction to hydrogen sulfide (anaerobic) and sulfide oxidation to elemental sulfur (aerobic). The biogenic sulfide produced can be employed for the chemical precipitation of metals in solution either inside the anaerobic reactor or in a separate vessel. Since the solubilities of most metal sulfides are much lower than of their respective hydroxides, considerably lower effluent metal concentrations can be achieved with THIOPAQ systems than in neutralization processes which immobilize metals predominantly by hydrolytic precipitation. In recent years, PAQUES has made significant advances in the design and operation of aerobic and anaerobic bioreactors for metal-sulfur systems. Moreover, the company has increased its technology portfolio to allow the development of more process oriented applications of THIOPAQ technology. A new PAQUES designed plant at Budelco treating sulfatecontaining proceswaters will be started up in 1999. The sulfate reduction is accomplished in a 500 m3 reactor in which hydrogen is used as electron donor. The endproduct, ZnS, is used for Zn and H2S04 production.

World demand for iron ore is far from peaking, and the substantial price decline that has captivated commentators since early 2014 is not the result of widespread misreading by producers of the prospects for global market growth. Recent price movements provide little useful insight into the industry’s longer-term fortunes, apart from reminding mining companies that their businesses need to be robust against the volatility and inescapable cyclicality of mineral commodity markets. Laboratory batch tests having preliminary and orientation character aiming at improvement of the molybdenum flotation at Ellatzite copper processing plant in Bulgaria have been conducted. The following technological parameters have been screened to study their influence on the grade and recovery of copper and molybdenum during the rougher flotation stage: flotation pulp density, pH, addition of secondary collector and replacement of MIBC by pine oil as a frother. The results have shown that slightly better grade/recovery figures could be obtained for both copper and molybdenum at lower flotation pulp densities. The addition of kerosene has improved the recovery of molybdenum however, on the expense of that of copper. The effects from pH variation and the replacement of MIBC by pine oil as a frother have been almost negligible.

"Three major challenges for the mining industry are the minimization of energy use, water consumption and environmental impact. Therefore, any technique that reduces milling waste, decreases water usage and shrinks impact during mine life must be considered a major innovation in mining.To these ends, one of the most impactful developments in mining within the last 10 years has been the expanded use of high technology sensors to create preconcentrations of mine ore (Jönsson, 2014). The most common sensors used are charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras, that allow through a red, green and blue (RGB) coloring system, the separation of minerals with different colors, tones and, in many cases, with differences in brightness.More recently, the development and use of dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) to enable the separation by atomic density of the constituent minerals within a given rock has become a reality. Within this work, a rapid bibliographical review of the CCD and DE-XRT methods and examples of their usage within mining and the industrial minerals sector are presented.Sensor-based sorting in miningAutomation within mining is one of the industry’s current goals. Sensors of various kinds have been used as steps toward automation in recent years, from improving the safety and productivity of haul trucks through the use of cameras and global positioning satellites (GPS), to the divination of slope failures. Just as with other mining areas, sorting has improved dramatically and made great steps toward automation in recent years (Wotruba et al., 2014).Sensor-based sorting (SBS) uses spectromatic sensors to identify intrinsic characteristics of particles and separates them by either mechanical or pneumatic means into different product streams (Wotruba et al., 2014). SBS can be used with great effectiveness to improve gravimetric beneficiation through the selective separation or preconcentration of run of mine ores (ROM)."

In recent years the trend in copper smelting has been to expand existing smelters to increase their throughput. New smelters under consideration are large, typically in excess of 200,000 tons per year of copper. Despite this trend to larger smelters there are a number of conditions where a much smaller smelter can be economically viable. This paper examines these conditions and outlines the process concepts for a small smelter treating from 20,000 to 100,000 tons per year of copper.

Agnico-Eagle, fondé par feu Paul Penna, a toujours eu comme politique la participation des employés aux décisions de la compagnie pour le déveleppement de celle-ci. Cet écrit va permettre de mieux comprendre la façon dont la division fût développé.

"In order to produce high quality metalized products and prevent from burden cohesion during pre-reduction, self-fluxed pellets were made for COREX process in the paper. The effects of reduction temperature and reducing gas composition on pre-reduction behaviors of self-fluxed pellets are studied. The results show that the prereduced pellets have poor quality and deposited carbon appears when the reduction temperature is between 600°C and 700°C. The metallization rate, reduction degree and compressive strength of prereduced pellets are promoted by the elevating reduction temperature and mole fraction of H2. Pellets reduced by pure H2 at 800°C have high metallization rate (96.2%), reduction degree (99.4%) and compressive strength (960N/pellet). In all tests, self-fluxed pellets display normal swelling (RSI<l5%) behavior which reveals that self-fluxed pellets are suitable for COREX process. Increasing reduction temperature and mole fraction ofH2 in reducing gas is benefit for pre-reduction of pellets.IntroductionCompared with Blast Furnace, the COREX process has advantages of short flow sheet, using non-coke coal and high-energy utilization. Acidic pellets and lump ores are the chief iron- bearing burden for COREX process which could lead to low melting point substance appearing in per-reduction process. In addition, the acidic hematite pellets tend to swell during the reduction [1-3]. This will result in decreasing compressive strength of pellets, burden cohesion, bad air permeability and poor work status in shaft furnace. Adding carbonate flux could restrain burden bonding to some extent in actual production, but decomposition of carbonate flux increases energy consumption. Worse still, weak reduction potential is unfavorable to iron material reduction [ 4, 5]."

With the ambitious target of adding another 2,00,000 MW of power generation by the year 2017 in India the demand for coal is bound to grow. The non-coking coal deposits in India are characterized as high ash and difficult-to-wash coals. Quality improvement by beneficiation is almost mandatory due to MoEF notification to use <34% ash coal for all power plants except those located at pithead. Most of the coal washeries in India are based on wet process, where the coal fines are allowed to settle in thickeners. The coarser particles settle faster leaving the fine particles suspended for longer period. The dispersed fine coal particles contain some surface charge, which leads to the development of electrical repulsion between the particles, and as a result of this, the suspension becomes more stable. In order to destabilize the colloidal suspension, flocculants are usually added, so that the settling rate of the fine particles also increases. These flocculants are of cationic, anionic and non-anionic depending upon the type of charge released when dispersed in water. The flocculants may act partly for charge neutralization and partly for inter particle bridging and electrostatic patch formation. The effectiveness of any type of flocculants depends upon the molecular weight and charge density of the polymer. "This presentation will provide information and facts on the drilling and blasting within a frozen shaft using a full face methodology. The Author will briefly discuss the history of the sinking of a frozen shaft in Saskatchewan, the challenges faced, and the solutions delivered. The case study will include a discussion describing the series of events that led to the decision to adopt a full face blasting methodology. The case study will describe key elements such as the drilling pattern, hole size and depth, explosive products and blast vibration monitoring systems. INTRODUCTION During the shaft sinking process at a project in Saskatchewan, it was recommended that a drill & blast benching method be utilized. Following an evaluation of the site, the geological conditions proved amenable to a ground freezing system that would stabilize the rock formations and prevent inflows of water into the shaft (Table 1).The shaft sinking process required that the ground surrounding the proposed shaft be frozen by drilling several near vertical freeze holes radially at a specified distance from the edge of the proposed shaft excavation. This would allow for the circulation of a chilled brine solution down the freeze holes. The circulation is achieved by means of stainless steel pipes encased within each other to provide a delivery and return conduit for the brine (Figure 1). As a result of this periphery freezing, the ground within the shaft excavation is also predominately frozen.The finished internal diameter of the shaft was 5.5 meters with varying overall excavation diameters to facilitate different liner designs used for various rock formations. For the most part, the fully unsupported/unfinished excavated diameter of the shaft varied from 6.9 meters to 8.5 meters depending on the zone excavated. The challenge was that the proposed drill and blast excavation method posed a significant risk due to the potential to damage the freeze wall and pipes during blasting. The decision was made to commence the excavation through mechanical excavation (i.e. chip and cut) methods then change to a drill and blast method utilizing a split benching design. Through this process, the team encountered five main challenges: 1. Sub-horizontal geological structures and slips that affected blasting performance and sometimes resulted in a sloping surface to the top of the bench; 2. Confined working area for the crews and equipment due to a limited work area as a result of utilizing the split (half) bench drill and blast methodology; 3. Mechanical chipping and cutting of the one-meter buffer zone to the final shaft diameter; 4. Crews working on extremely slippery uneven frozen rock and ice surfaces, which affected safety and efficiency; 5. Establishing a blast vibration monitoring system to determine if the drilling and blasting of the full shaft excavation diameter were acceptable."

In the present study, the feasibility of recycling AA6061 Al alloy chips by a combination of ciyomilling, cold compaction and hot extrusion processes was investigated. Furthermore, the effect of Al powder addition to the recycled Al alloys chips on the mechanical properties was investigated. The characterization of recycled Al alloys was made by structural examination and mechanical tests (hardness, compression and dry sliding wear tests). The results indicated that by increasing wt. % of Al powder added to the recycled Al alloy chips the studied properties (the density, hardness, compressive strength and wear resistance) increased due to reduction of porosity in the recycled Al alloys.
