A major domestic aluminum producer raised its price for primary aluminum metal from 44 cents per pound to 48 cents per pound, effective August 5, 1976. Other major producers have increased their list prices by equivalent amounts COAL: The strike which began July 19 in southern West Virginia enlarged by early August to involve approximately 80,000 miners in nine States. As of August 4, the aggregated loss of production is estimated to be 5.8 million tons. Reportedly, at this time, the railroads which serve the struck areas are feeling the largest impact with coke plants and electric utilities relying on stocks which are generally high.

"By newly developed ICP method, trace amounts of As(III), As(V) .,Sb(III) and Sb(V) were precisely determined within accuracy of sub ng/ml. As(III) and Sb(III) were separated from As(V) and Sb(V) by extracting into ·xylene as diethyldithiocarbamate complexes using diethylammonium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDDC), and then back-extracted into nitric acid for a quantitative determiruition by ICP-AES equipped with hydridegeneration system The recoveries of As(III) and Sb(III) were satisfactory throughout the extraction with 0.04mol/l DDDC in xylene from lmol/l hydrochloric acid solution and the back-extraction with 7 mol/l nitric acid. As(V) and Sb(V) were reduced to As(III) and Sb(III) by ascorbic acid and potassium iodide, and their quantities were determined as mentioned above. The detection limits were found to be 0.58ng/ml for As(III), 0.63ng/ml for Sb(III) using 50ml of a sample. The proposed method was applied to analysis of the real sample.Introduction In drain, arsenic(AS) concentration is prescribed below 0.lmg/l, so As must be removed. So it is an urgent necessity to develop for determining concentration of As(III) and As(V). Antimony( Sb) has resemblance .chemical property to As. So Sb was experimented the same as As.The separation and determination of As(III) and As(V) have been carried out using several methods, such as ICP after copreclpitating separation, HPLC, direct hydride generation atomic absorption. However these methods have some problems. One of main problems is that HPLC and direct hydride generation atomic absorption methods are influenced by coexisting elements."

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely, and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once the analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at the power plants. A quality assurance program can also help the mine deliver a consistent product to the electric utility's power plants. The importance of the three major tenants for a good quality assurance program: accuracy, timeliness and consistency, are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

THE conventional method of making water gas involves individual plants for the separate carbonization of coal to coke and the subsequent gasification of coke with steam. The process demands lump coke, preferably made from the best quality of coking coals. The ash in the coke should have a high melting point and the gasification process suffers a loss of efficiency when cokes with low ash-melting points are used. In Britain, these coals are generally the most expensive and they are readily available only in certain localities. The coals not suitable for making lump coke, or yielding only poor quality coke, are much more widely available and are generally cheaper. DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES In Germany, processes have been developed and operated commercially for the production of water gas from very low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignites, but much less effort has been spent on processes to use coals of intermediate rank, which are widely available in Britain. The brown-coal processes use coal in the form of either dust or briquettes. The most successful of the dust-gasification methods is the Winkler process, which made a substantial contribution to German oil production during the war. It uses coal in the size range 0 to 8 mm and the fuel bed is blown with a mixture of oxygen and steam at a rate high enough to give it a characteristic boiling motion or, in present-day phraseology, at a rate more than sufficient to fluidize it (Fig. 1). Air cannot be used to provide the heat required for gasification, for vari¬ous reasons. In the first place, to make the process continuous by mixing air and steam would involve the production of a lean gas containing much nitrogen. If a separate blow were used, a large amount of potential heat would be lost because the blow gas in such a process would contain a very high percentage of carbon monoxide. Oxygen is necessary therefore and oxygen remains relatively expensive for use in gasification. In the Winkler generator, formation of clinker caused by local overheating does not occur, because of the mobility and high heat transfer of a fluidized bed. These properties of fluidized dusts have been used most successfully.

FOR discharging and diffusing the gases from the reverberatory furnaces and converters the Morenci Reduction Works has been provided with one of the largest reinforced concrete chimneys ever built. It is 612 ft. high from the bottom of the foundation to the cap at the top, and has a minimum diameter of 24 ft. inside the lining near the top and 38 ft. 10 in. at the bottom. Its estimated capacity, at the elevation of 4338 ft. above sea level, is about 1,000,000 cu.ft. of gas per minute at a temperature of 500° F. and an atmospheric temperature of 90°. Under these conditions the draft will be at least 3 in. of water at the flue inlet. The gases enter the chimney through a steel balloon flue 33 ft. high and 15 ft. wide, the bottom of which is 19 ft. above the ground.

The enormous and constantly increasing demand for limestone to supply a multitude of uses is a remarkable feature of the mineral industries. As approximately 130,000,000 tons of limestone are produced annually, it is not surprising that deposits at or near the surface are gradually being exhausted and that less advantageous supplies are being worked. Quarries are becoming deeper and wider year by year, and in many places the volume of overburden that must be removed to allow open-pit work has increased alarmingly. Quarrymen are also gradually learning how expensive it is to sort and clean stone from a deposit overlain by poor material. As such conditions confront the limestone industry, the natural tendency is to seek some modification in method whereby the handicaps of increasing cost may be met and overcome. Operators, some of them unwillingly, have been forced to conclude that underground work in drifts and tunnels is the most logical solution of the problem. The unwillingness of some is largely due to unfamiliarity with mining and to the unfounded fear that costs must increase and dangers multiply when mining is undertaken.

Pellet sizing plays a key role in the productivity of the entire pelletization and subsequent induration processes, whereas uneven pellet sizing can increase the circulating load of the balling circuit inducing operational instability leading to production loses. The present work focuses in comparing the agglomeration kinetics, expressed as the number of pellets produced in a determined target size range, of different organic binder-bentonite binder systems. The batch experimental results show that the binder system has a great influence in the resulting pellet sizing, which could lead to advantages in terms of balling circuit efficiency and eventually operational de-bottlenecking.

Aluminium alloys have gained popularity in many industries due to their high strength and low weight. One shortcoming of aluminium alloys is their poor resistance to abrasion and erosion wear compared to materials such as stainless steels. In this project, aluminium alloy 2014 (AA2014) was coated with a 1.5 mm thick laser-deposited layer composed of silicon, copper, and aluminium with the aim of increasing the wear resistance. The amount of silicon, copper, and aluminium added to each sample was determined by a mixtures model. It was discovered that the Al-Cu system is very sensitive to silicon additions and that wear resistance depends on the primary phase to solidify as well as on the final phase distribution. Two primary phases were identified; alpha aluminium and theta intermetallic. It was observed that the clad layer increases both the hardness and wear resistance of AA2014, and that the material solidifying as primary alpha aluminium displayed a lower hardness but higher wear resistance than the samples containing primary theta phase. All clad layers performed better in terms of wear resistance than the unclad samples. The knowledge gained and principles used in this project could be applied to many other aluminium alloys.

"A numerical algorithm is described for the simultaneous prediction of the thermomechanical behavior of the materials and microstructure evolption during metal forging. The numerical development is based on the finite element solution of the thermoviscoplastic deformation of metals coupled with the internal state variable model describing the microstructure evolution involving work hardening, recovery, recrystallization and grain size distribution. The finite element code for rigid viscoplastic deformation is developed based on the modification of the existing code for the thermal and fluid flow calculations. The code is tested against and compares well with the results reported in literature. The procedures for the integration of the · rnicrostructure model into the macro finite element model are described. Results are presented showing the characteristics of materials dynamics and mechanical deformation during simple metal forging processes.IntroductionIn industrial deformation processes such as hot rolling and forging, the workpiece undergoes both macroscopic plastic deformations and microstructural evolution. A computer model that allows to predict both materials dynamics and macroscopic deformation is obviously more useful for both fundamental understanding and deformation process optimization. For some industrial applications, especially those involving novel, light and high strength materials, such an integrated model is critical in that both materials and thermomechanical 'behavior during forging must be carefully controlled to obtain the products that meet the desired strength requirement [I]."

Os Aços Inoxidáveis Duplex possuem uma estrutura constituída basicamente por ferrita e austenita na proporção aproximada de 50%. Este trabalho estudou a influência da temperatura de um tratamento térmico na morfologia e fração de ferrita e austenita no aço UNS S32304. Os tratamentos térmicos realizados consistiram no aquecimento das amostras, desde a temperatura ambiente até a temperatura de 1250°C, seguido de um resfriamento lento em um segundo forno estável em uma determinada temperatura. As amostras permaneceram neste segundo forno por um intervalo de tempo necessário para que suas temperaturas atingissem exatamente um valor desejado, sendo então imediatamente retiradas e resfriadas em água a 20°C para preservar a estrutura resultante do ciclo térmico aplicado. As amostras foram metalograficamente preparadas, atacadas e analisadas com o auxílio de um microscópio ótico. As frações de fases medidas por MO se aproximaram dos resultados obtidos por simulação utilizando o software Thermo-Calc. A morfologia das fases variou significativamente com a diminuição da temperatura de tratamento, uma vez que a austenita se mostrou mais fragmentada nas temperaturas mais baixas, porém o bandeamento não deixou de existir na estrutura.A transformação da ferrita em austenita se mostrou fortemente dependente do tempo.

Scope of Section The physical characterization of an ore or mineral mixture in such detail that mineral processing may be effectively applied to create more useful products is one part of the technology of sampling and testing. In addition, the evaluation of the multitude of separation processes, both physical and chemical, combined with ancillary opera¬tions and performed on samples at a laboratory scale, is another part of the testing procedure. Although analytical techniques provid¬ing quantitative determinations of elemental compositions are an im¬portant and necessary supplement to any testing program, that field of endeavor is a well-developed, separate entity beyond the scope of this Section. Sampling procedures cover the practice of selecting representative quantities of test materials in the field to evaluate mineral deposits, and extend to techniques of obtaining process samples in slurry and bulk ore as part of process evaluation. The same techniques are appli¬cable, of course, to standardized methods of metallurgical accounting. Sampling is also an important facet of successful on-line measurement of slurry properties such as assays and particle size in the practice of automation. However, the sampling methods in this case can be different from those needed for precise testing and accounting pur¬poses. Sampling was well defined in Taggart's Handbook as "the opera¬tion of removing a part convenient in size for testing, from a whole which is of much greater bulk, in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested (e.g., specific gravity, metal content, recoverability) are the same in both the whole and the part removed (SAMPLE). The conditions of the more stringent definition, that the sample shall be completely representative of the whole as regards all aspects save bulk, are practically never fulfilled when heterogenous mineral mixtures are sampled." Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing, Section 19, "Sampling and Testing," continues to be a very useful compendium of principles and techniques, particularly as applied to manual methods for han¬dling samples. In the intervening years since its last revision, substan¬tial progress has been made in both the theory and the techniques; thus, this current contribution is designed to be an extension of the earlier work, yet complete enough to provide procedural guidelines to methods of continuing validity. Although basic principles of testing remain unchanged, the meth¬ods of applying those principles have undergone great change. New testing equipment has become available, yielding a greater precision of results. Testing methods have been refined which, in many cases, allows for a valid scale up of flowsheet designs without the necessity of costly pilot or prototype plant development. Justification for a Sampling and Testing Program* The proper evaluation of a mineral property is a complicated process. It often is done on a team basis with the exploration geologist, mining engineer, mineral process engineer (extractive metallurgist), economist, and product utilizer (ceramist, chemical engineer, chemist, metallurgist, etc.) all represented. The mineral processing engineer is a key member because he can provide a go no-go answer to the question, "Can this ore be processed economically?" In addition, his judgment on the response of even the initial sample to processing can be an invaluable guide to the proposed process and its mutations. Since the capital investment and operating costs are so sensitive to the type of process used, the judgment of the mineral processing engineer forms an important part of the early evaluation of the profitability of a new mining venture. This early estimation of the processing approach is all the more important since, for some metalliferous ores, the capital investment for mill, smelter, water supply, and tailings disposal exceeds the cost of the mine. At present, for commodities such as coal, the reverse is true. There is a smaller capital investment for the coal preparation plant than for the mine. In general, both the capital and operating costs escalate very rapidly in the following order: gravity concentration of alluvial deposits (e.g., dredging), gravity concentration of lode ores, flotation, simple hydrometallurgical processes, and complicated hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The latter two processes may cost 100 to 1,000 times more per ton treated than processing of a simple alluvial deposit. This dictates that the valuable mineral be concentrated as much as possible to minimize the total tonnage treated in the more expensive operations. Within each of these ore-processing categories there is a wide range of process sophistication and hence of capital and operating costs. Perhaps the greatest variations are in the chemical processing of ores. These range from the simple leaching of a copper waste dump to very sophisticated hydrometallurgical processing of ores in increasing order of cost. Because the overall cost of a mining venture is so sensitive to the process selected, it is essential that the mineral¬ processing engineer evaluate the ore in the initial stages of the development of an ore body. As better samples become available, he must continually revise his estimate of the process to be employed. The sampling and testing process must be a necessary and continuing activity throughout the life of a project. One fundamental aspect of nearly all mineral deposits is the inherent variability of the mineral assemblage and composition. A utopian goal of any processing plant is to have the process so flexible and so well-defined that an automatic process control system can optimize the economic recovery at all times. Since this is rarely possible, a continuing or at least a periodic testing program is desirable. Variables to be considered are: 1) Ore body inconsistencies. 2) Zonal variations. 3) Feed variations from mining plan or methods. 4) Variable performance of processing units due to wear. 5) Seasonal or other changes affecting processing conditions such as water quality, temperature, etc. 6) Changing market conditions for product quality or byproducts. 7) Technological advances in processing methods or equipment. 8) Increasing demands for environmental control. 9) Changing economics of competitive processes, of supplies, of capital investment vs. labor costs, etc. Sampling Procedures Preliminary Guidelines for Sampling Ore Deposit Studies. t At a very early stage, it is essential that the mineral processing engineer receive a sample of the ore. This may be a portion of the diamond drill core or a split from the trench, pit, churn drill, channel, or sheet sample. Even a grab sample may have some value, but it should be selected by the mining engineer or exploration geologist to be as representative of the ore body as possible within his best judgment. The sample delivered to the process engineer should have been subjected to as little prior crushing as is practical since fine sizes are difficult to concentrate. In addition, finely ground ores are readily oxidized and thus may give misleading test results. Furthermore, ground samples may make it impossible to eval¬uate either the comminution or the coarse-gravity concentration pro¬cesses. For an initial evaluation, a good deal may often be learned from a sample of only a few pounds if that is all that is available. To obtain the maximum information from a sample, its selection should be carefully discussed with the mineral processing engineer. In addi¬tion to being as representative as possible, the mineralogically distinct samples should be carefully segregated rather than composited. Since drastically different processes are often needed to process samples of differing mineralogy, considerable care and time must be exercised during this sample collection step. The segregation of samples showing gross mineralogical differences, such as the oxide caping on a sulfide deposit or a laterized zone, is easy. It is the more subtle changes in mineralogy that can often elude the field man. Yet these differences are often sufficient to dictate that an entirely different type of process be used. Obviously, the selection of these initial samples for ore testing and mineralogical studies requires that it be done by a man of consider¬able experience and judgment. While the mining engineer or field geologist is collecting these samples, he should also note and convey to the processing engineer such details as water quality and availabil¬ity, terrain, potential mill location, tailings-disposal areas, case of transportation, etc. As the property is developed with additional drill holes, adits, etc., larger and more representative samples will be required to develop the ore-processing flowsheet more adequately. If pilot-plant studies are required, a very large sample may be necessary. Though the type and amount of sample collected for flowsheet development investigations vary widely, gathering a representative sample of the ore body is a prime requisite for any process development effort. During the last decade, MHO has continued to diversify the feed. of its Hoboken smelter. The range of feed materials including larger proportions of precious metals has been extended and the production of minor metals has been developed. These diversifications have required further improvements at the smelter. Attention has been particularly focussed on an increase of productivity, compliance with emission standards and achievement of the highest recoveries of valuable elements. The assaying and sampling facilities have been considerably expanded and the different processing steps of the smelter are now also systematically controlled and managed by simulation models. The charge preparation at the sinter plant, returns handling, sinter conditioning and corresponding ventilation systems have been completely renewed. The annual smelting requirement is now achieved with two blast furnaces instead of three. This is the result of rebuilding and enlarging one of the furnaces and, of a completely new concept of the charge proportioning and charging systems, together with oxygen enrichment and blast air preheat. Ventilation capacity has also been drastically increased. A 7 MVA electric furnace for cleaning the slag from both blast furnaces. contributes to improving the overall metal recovery.

X-ray diffraction, differential thermal, ad rnetallo-graphic methods were used to establish the Dy-Pb Phase diagram. Lead additions lower the 1377°C transformation temperature of dysprosium to 1360°C leading to an inverted peritectic reaction. The 327°C melting point of lead is lowered by dysprosium additions to about 326°C yielding a eutectic reaction. A second eutectic reaction occurs at 13.3 at. pct Pb and 1200°C. The dysprosium-richest intermetallic compound DysPb3 melts congruently at 1695°C and crystallizes in the hexagonal Mn5Si3 (D8,) type structure. The peritectic decomposition temperatures for the remaining compounds are Dy5Pb, at 1555C, DyPb2 at 955C, and DyPb3 at 880°C. A fifth compound near the DyPb stoichiometry exists over a 310°C temperature range decomposing at 1130°C by means of an inverted peritectic reaction and melting incongruently at 1440°C. The crystal structures of the compounds are discussed. A systematic study of the rare earth-lead alloy systems is underway in an effort to supply information concerning the alloying behavior of the rare earth metals. The Dy-Pb phase diagram is the fourth system to be investigated in this study. The Yb-Pb,1 Y-Pb,2 and Eu-Pb 3 diagrams have been published recently. Utilization of the rare earth series of metals as a research tool in this manner should yield a better understanding of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The lead used in this investigation was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and was specified to be 99.99 pct pure. The dysprosium was prepared in this Laboratory by the calcium reduction of the fluoride followed by distillation of the dysprosium. The major impurities in the dysprosium in ppm are: A1 (<40), Ca (400), Er (<50), Gd (<200), Ho (<200), Mg (<50), Si (30), Ta (400), Tb (<100), Y (<50), 0 (651, H (15), N (not detected), F (430), C (35). Alloy Preparation. Most of the alloys were prepared by melting weighed amounts of dysprosium and lead in sealed tantalum crucibles. The tantalum crucibles were sealed by are-welding in a He-Ar atmosphere welding chamber. Thus the alloys are in contact with He-Ar at about 1 atm pressure. Homogenization was achieved by holding them in the liquid state for about 1 hr, cooling, inverting the crucibles, remelting, and repeating the process at least twice. Since these alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum crucibles, chemical analysis for final composition was thought to be unnecessary. No detectable reaction of these alloys with the tantalum crucible was observed by metallographic examination. Metallographic evidence was also used to confirm the homogeneity of some of the alloys prepared in this manner. The compositions of a few alloys, which were prepared by nonconsum-able are-melting, were corrected for the small weight losses involved by assuming that the weight loss is due to vaporization of lead. The specimens obtained from the alloy samples were prepared under a dry-argon atmosphere because they were rapidly attacked by air and moisture. Thermal Analysis. Differential thermal analysis methods were used to determine the liquidus curves and reaction horizontals of the system. Both Pt vs Pt + 13 pct Rh and W + 5 pct Re vs W + 26 pct Re thermocouples were used to measure the temperature. An X- Y recorder was used to record the specimen temperature and differential electromotive force between the specimen and molybdenum standard. The arrest temperatures were measured potentiometri-cally. The accuracy limits (* values) associated with the reaction temperatures obtained by this method were estimated on the basis of both the reproducibility of the particular temperature value and the accuracy of the thermocouple at a given temperature. Liquidus temperatures were obtained from cooling arrest data while both heating and cooling arrest data were used to establish the horizontals of the diagram. Heat treatments during the thermal analyses of the alloys between 40 and 70 at. pct Pb were necessary in order to approach equilibrium conditions. The samples were held at temperatures between the various peritectic horizontals for l to 2 hr before the thermal analyses were continued. The entire range of compositions was investigated at the expense of a minimum amount of materials by adding appropriate amounts of lead to master alloys. More than sixty alloys were analyzed by this differential thermal method and for each alloy the results given herein are taken from two or three heating and cooling cycles. X-Ray and Metallographic Methods. Slice specimens for metallography and powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared from rod-shaped samples which had been melted in sealed 0.62 5-cm-diam tantalum crucibles. The specimens were heat-treated in sealed tantalum crucibles which were protected by sealing them in argon-filled quartz ampules. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the ampules in ice water after heat treatment. X-ray powder specimens were sealed in 0.3-mm-diam glass capillaries under a dry-argon atmosphere. Copper, iron, and chromium radiation were used to obtain the powder patterns for these alloys. More than 150 powder patterns were obtained for specimens of various compositions and heat treatments. Fire refining of copper consists of two stages copper oxidation and copper reduction. Very frequently the capacity of the anode furnace is determined by the rate of copper reduction, The analysis of factors affecting the rate of the oxygen reduction from a liquid copper with solid carbon or injected hydrocarbons pointed out the role of the mass transfer in a liquid copper in final stage of the reduction. Experimental results of copper reduction with graphite and injected natural gas in laboratory-scale crucibles showed two stages of the reduction process with a sharp change of the controlling mechanism. The estimated dynamic surface area of gas bubbles based on the measured bubble frequency and the gas flowrate allowed for the determination of the reaction constant as a degree of the partial pre-combustion of the air/natural gas mix. The variation of the used reductant as a function of the oxygen concentration and temperature has been evaluated based on the determined kinetic model. The intensification of copper reduction in fire refining has been discusses on the basis of obtained kinetic data and analysis of various factors determining the time of reduction.

This study aimed to identify a way to reduce the use of bentonite in the pelletization of magnetite. With this goal, different combinations of binders were compared to bentonite by examining the quality of pellets obtained by balling drum agglomeration. Pellets were subjected to routine tests that included simple compression of the wet and dry 105°C pellets, dropping wet pellets to determine their ability to survive handling and submitting pellets to thermal shock to determine how they tolerate drying and preheating. The best results use sodium silicate (1.5%) as a binder and show that it is possible to pelletize iron ore without using bentonite.

Os aços carbono são materiais metálicos muito importantes na fabricação de peças para a indústria metal-mecânica. Parafusos, hastes, eixos, pistões, engrenagens são fabricados a partir desse tipo de aço, mais especificamente do aço SAE1040. O objetivo desse trabalho foi de avaliar a influência da presença de 0,2% em massa de cromo nas propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas de um aço com 0,4% em massa de carbono. A liga padrão SAE1040 e esta liga modificada com cromo foram submetidas a tratamentos térmicos de normalização, recozimento, têmpera e revenimento, e comparadas às durezas e microdurezas das diferentes amostras entre si. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram que a adição de cromo é um método eficiente quando se deseja aumentar a resistência de um material. Observou-se que os valores de dureza e microdureza para o aço com a adição de cromo apresentaram-se maiores em relação ao aço padrão, como consequência das microestruturas obtidas, principalmente após têmpera e revenimento. A adição de 0,2% em massa de cromo no aço carbono influiu na melhora das propriedades mecânicas do aço tornando-o mais interessante na fabricação de peças para a indústria metal-mecânica.

"Recycling of ADC12 alloy scraps for fabrication of open-cell aluminium foams has been conducted via pressure infiltration method of replication process. The scrap, up to 50 wt.%, was melted with pure aluminium billet, followed by infiltration in a replicated mold of polyethylene foam structure. Compared with the pure aluminium foam, the compressive strength and hardness are higher for the foams with recycled scraps. The increase in foam mechanical properties is due to the presence of Si hard phase in Al matrix. The strength and hardness of the foams also increase with increasing contents of the scraps.IntroductionRecently, open-cell metallic foams have been brought to considerable attention of many industries due to their superior properties; such as large surface area, high specific strength, thermal conductivity, high service temperature and excellent anti-microbial activity, that cannot be found in conventional materials [1, 2]. Typically, open-cell foams are used in functional applications for which a requirement of high strength materials is not demanded. Good examples of such applications include heat exchangers, bone-replacement implants, interconnects, catalyst supports, and sound insulators.Among all types of open-cell metallic foams, aluminium (Al) is the most widely used base metal, due to low material cost, low density, low melting temperature and good corrosion resistance. To improve mechanical properties of Al foam, modification of foam microstructure with addition of alloy elements or ceramic particles is commonly carried out [3, 4]. ADC12 alloy is a typical die-casting Al alloy with high content of silicon (Si) close to the eutectic point in Al-Si binary phase diagram. The alloy is extensively used in the casting industry, due to high wear and corrosion resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion and excellent castability [5]. The mechanical properties of Al-Si alloy are strongly dependent of Si content."

In 1989-90, the Bureau of Mines appraised selected high resource potential areas containing gold, rare-earth-element, or pegmatite deposits in or near the Black Hills National Forest. Available mineral resource data were used to construct mine and mill models and to compute discounted cash-flow rate-of-return analyses. Using this information, the economic feasibility of possible operations and probability (in the nonmathematical sense) of exploration and development within the next decade were assessed. High exploration and development probabilities are forecast for gold deposits around existing and permitted mine areas near Lead-Deadwood and west of Galena. The area east of Galena has low to moderate exploration and development probability; the Rochford area has low to high exploration probability and low to moderate development probability; the Keystone area has low to moderate exploration probability and low development probability; the Medicine Mountain area has moderate to high exploration and low to moderate development probabilities. Exploration probability in the Bear Lodge Mountains area is high for rare-earth elements and gold; development probability is low. Exploration probability for gold in the Mineral Hill area is low to moderate; development probability is low. The current level of activity associated with pegmatite mining in the Black Hills would probably not change significantly in the next decade; both exploration and development probabilities are low to moderate.
