A newly developed coal flotation collector ZFC and its flotation characteristics for five different coals were introduced in this paper. ZFC is an emulsion composed of 27% diesel oil, 70% water and 3% surfactants. The main surfactant is synthesized with oil which is environmental favorable and reproducible. Compared flotation experiments show that, at the same dosage, ZFC give 2%~5% recovery promotion than typical collector with only a slightly ash content increment, but saving 70% diesel oil. Zeta-potential and Wetting heat measurement indicate that the surfactant helps the interactions between oil and coal particles, the industrial application tests in several coal preparation plants demonstrate that ZFC is suitable both in technical and economical aspects.

On July 1, the Bonneville Power Administration announced a 25% power cutback because of lower than normal stream flow. In September, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down one 23,000-ton-per-year potline at its Vancouver, Wash., primary aluminum smelter. Alcoa also announced that the last of four potlines at its Point Comfort, Tex., primary aluminum smelter would be restarted in October. A new 3-year contract was signed and workers at three Alcan Aluminum Ltd. primary aluminum smelters in Canada returned to work. It was estimated that it would take about 3 months before the smelters were operating at full capacity.

The present knowledge on ground movements and mining damage is mainly based on observations made when mining seamlike deposits. The studies, rules, and regulations in different countries agree in that the differential ground movements, especially the strain, account for the damage to structures. Accordingly, large buildings are particularly susceptible. The opinions on what amount of ground deformation induces what degree of structural damage are not quite uniform. Mining damage can be reduced or prevented by structural and/or underground precautions. The latter comprise measures for generally reducing the ground movements (leaving pillars, filling, partial extraction) and for reducing temporary movements (rapid extraction, specially arranged workings). Because the differential movements decrease with increasing depth of mining, safety pillars are largely dispensable at greater depths. Shafts are mainly affected by the vertical derivatives of rock displacements, but extraction in the vicinity of shafts is feasible even under difficult conditions. The theoretical concept of the ground movement process established in part 1 of this work is in qualitative agreement with the facts herein observed. As a quantitative approach, it should be applied to calculating ground surface movements rather than rock movements about underground openings. It can be extended by introducing more detailed strata characteristics.

A 3-month study in 1971 of the Essen Roof Support and Rock Mechanics Research Center's program of roof and support evaluation included 25 mine trips. German miners must adopt mining methods and environmental control measures involving methane drainage and water infusion to improve productivity under severe natural conditions. Pressing problems in ground control must be solved such as cavities in front and above the supports at longwall faces and excessive convergence in gate roads. The Center developed automatic data processing methods to quantify the results of roof and support surveys and to establish criteria. Another approach to ground control is the study of mine models. The Center's laboratory has the facilities to test elements of powered roof support and whole assembled units. Face automation and roof control by powered shields are novel developments that are under close scrutiny in the field as well as in the laboratory. Though the Essen Center's roof and support evaluation techniques are tailored to the needs of the coal mining industry of the Federal Republic of Germany under conditions vastly different from those in the United States, some application may be found here, for instance, monitoring faces and roadways and preventive maintenance of hydraulic systems.

As a portion of a general program for the synthesis of hard materials, a method was sought by which the hardness and density of tungsten carbide (WC)-cobalt compacts could be increased. It was demonstrated by Cotter that these improvements in quality could be made by employing an electric-resistance sintering process in which heat and pressure are applied simultaneously to presintered compacts composed of powdered tungsten carbide and cobalt. This conclusion was based on tests of material prepared by Cotter on welding equipment in use at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N. Y. Rockwell-hardness tests made at Norris and core-drilling tests made at the Mount Weather Station of the Bureau of Mines indicated that, for some purposes, carbide material made by this process might be superior to the chemically analogous commercial products prepared by ordinary sintering methods. A program to develop optimum conditions for the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts was initiated. The program was followed by a systematic evaluation of the hardness and density of compacts prepared by this method along with a series of carbide compacts furnished by various manufacturers. This paper presents a description of the electric-resistance sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt compacts and the results of comparative physical tests.

THE following pages c9ntain a brief description of the processes involved in the manufacture of silica brick at the Sydney plant of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. Silica brick manufacture was commenced at Sydney in 1918, for the purpose of supplying the requirements of the steel plant, where about three million silica bricks were used annually. Previous to that date, all silica refractories were brought to Sydney from American sources and were subject to a freight cost of nine dollars per ton, or about twenty-seven dollars per thousand. As a preliminary step to manufacture, a thorough investigation of all possible sources of silica in the vicinity of Sydney was carried on during 1916 and 1917. ?Eighteen separate deposits were examined. Of this number, only four were found suitable for brick making, and the Leitches Creek silica, being the nearest of these four deposits to Sydney, was selected as the raw material for the proposed plant. CRYSTAL MODIFICATIONS OF SILICA A brief review of the silica minerals may serve to indicate why careful investigation of sources of supply is necessary before actual brick-making is attempted. The crystal modifications of silica, i.e., quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite, all possessing alpha and beta phases, play a most important part in determining the suitability or otherwise of the resulting brick. By heat treatment, any one of these forms of silica may be converted to either of the others. The inversion temperatures (after Fenner) in degrees Centigrade are shown on rage 160.

"INTRODUCTION This is the second report of investigations describing tests in full-scale commercial heats of steel-using electrolytic manganese having a purity of about 99.95 percent, produced in the Bureau's pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev. The first report dealt with tests in cooperation with two companies can the use,of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel. 3/ Plans aril cost estimates for reasonably large commercial, electrolytic plants based upon pilot-plant experience, as well as the comments of a number of concerns where electrolytic manganese has been tried, are contained in another publication.4/ The tests in cooperation with industry are part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigations of methods of utilizing low-grade domestic manganese ores, thereby the United States leas dependent upon foreign sources of manganese for metallurgical use. The Boulder City pilot plant already has demonstrated the feasibility of producing electrolytic manganese from several of the most important reserves of low-grade manganese ore. As the ferromanganese normally used by the steel industry represents the bulk of the Nation's manganese requirements, the usefulness and possi¬ble advantages of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of steel must be established if electrowinning from domestic ores is to become an important factor of manganese supply.Preliminary arrangements for the cooperative tests at the Atlas Steel Casting Co., Buffalo,. N. Y., were made with E. L. Altenburg, vice president and general manager of the company, by A. A. Dow. 5/ The data on the tests at the Atlas plant presented herein are based upon reports of E. L. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to separate the F from byproduct Zn concentrates obtained from fluorspar (CaF2) production, as part of the Bureau's effort to devise efficient, environmentally acceptable technology for recovering Zn from resources considered undesirable by Zn producers. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was found to be effective in F removal, while ammonium carbonate [(NH4)2C031 was not. The most important variables for reducing the necessary residence time were found to be temperature and agitation. Optimum leaching conditions were 75° C and 500 r/min for 2 h at 40 pct solids with 0.2 g acid per gram of concentrate, which resulted in a 98.3-pct F extraction. Zinc losses during F removal were in the range of 2 to 3.3 pct. Other elements such as Fe, Cd, Ca, and Cu were also partially dissolved. About 93 pct of the F was removed from the leach solution by neutralization and precipitation with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]. Additional treatment might be necessary to limit the buildup of soluble elements in the recycled leach solution.

Closed chamber incineration (CCI) is a novel technique by which irradiated nuclear graphite may be destroyed without the risk of radioactive cation release into the environment. The process utilizes an enclosed combustion chamber coupled with molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs). The transport of cations is intrinsically suppressed by the MCFCs, such that only the combustion gases are conducted through for release to the environment. An example CCI design was developed which had as its goal the destruction of graphite fuel elements from the Fort St. Vrain reactor (FSVR). By employing CCI, the volume of high level waste from the FSVR will be reduced by approximately 87 percent. Additionally, the incineration process will convert the Sic coating on the FSVR fuel particles to SiO2, thus creating a form potentially suitable for direct incorporation in a vitrification process stream. The design is compact, efficient, and makes use of currently available technology.

The commonly accepted genetic theories of Pilbara iron ores and Woodie Woodie manganese ores have often presented them as quite unique. This apparent uniqueness is not confined to just iron and manganese, but is also seen in gold and copper deposits in Western Australia. The published material on iron and manganese ores would seem to have either a quite complicated genesis or none at all. An alternate theory for the origin of these deposits is presented which involves a protore with simple oxidation and pH controls with hydrothermal fluid sources from the diagenesis and dewatering of the underlying strata. This theory explains the distribution, thinning, cold dolerites and very high concentrations of deleterious minerals observed in these deposits. This genesis system is also related to the systems that deposit hydrothermal gold and copper in sediments in the region.This paper presents the author’s observations, sampling and mapping after several decades studying and exploring for the minerals in Australia and locations overseas. All of these theories were developed with (or in spite of!) the guidance of Mal Kneeshaw, but would never have seen the light of day without him and the others presenting here. It is not what I would call scientifically polished, and possibly deserves more detailed studies; it is, however, presented as a discussion paper.CITATION:Schwann, P B, 2015. The mechanical properties of low-hafnium, arc-melted, Kroll-process zirconium are presented. The effect of temperature on the ultimate strength, yield strength, proportional limit, elongation, hardness, Young's modulus, electrical resistivity, and impact strength are shown, The effects of cold work and annealing on the tensile properties, bend radius, and formability, as determined by cupping tests, are also given, Tensile properties are compared, in part, to those obtained on earlier graphite-melted zirconium and on crystal-bar zirconium. INTRODUCTION The commercial production of high-purity, low-hafnium bearing zirconium has been achieved, and this metal is becoming available for industrial use. However, there is little published information regarding the physical and mechanical properties of this product; and, since there have been many improvements in the production and arc-melting techniques of zirconium in the past 3 years, it was considered advisable to present the properties of the vastly improved zirconium representative of current production.

The paper deals with a process that allows the recycling in a cupola of EAF dusts with 18 % Zn. It produces dusts with zinc grade higher than 50 - 55 % and commercial cast iron with less than 200 ppm Zn, 50 ppm Pb, 0.15 % S. The paper focuses mainly on lab tests made with the aim to develop an effective formulation of self reducing - melting pellets. With such a formulation, agglomerates develop a breaking load higher than 125 - 150 kg without any thermal treatment. Zinc and lead are volatilized in the cupola with yields higher than 95 % at 1200 OC, before any melting. Sulphur is transfemed into gas and slag. All these conditions allow to lower zinc, lead and sulphur grades below the cast iron specifications. Results of first bench scale tests performed at Fonderie Piret to validate the process will be presented.

Iron removal by precipitation as jarosite from Fe-Ni-Co sulfate solutions, (synthetic or real, resulting from laterites leaching) has been investigated. Precipitation was carried out at 95 C, and at an initial pH 1.6, which was either kept constant with CaCO3 or Li2CO3 additions, or left to drift with the evolution of the reaction to lower values. The precipitation of K-, NH4- and Na- jarosite was initially examined using synthetic solutions. In all cases, hydronium ions were incorporated into the precipitate as well. Residual iron in solution was lower (0.2-1 g/1) and equilibrium was achieved faster (within 4-8 h) when precipitating K¬jarosite at constant pH, using CaCO3 for neutralization. Nickel and cobalt losses were small. Na- jarosite precipitation was also studied from real solutions with high initial iron content, under constant pH=1.5, controlled with CaCO3 additions, and it was shown that low residual iron concentration in solution (0.3-0.5 g/1) can be achieved again, with relatively small nickel and cobalt losses. The thickening and filtration characteristics of the precipitates were excellent in all cases examined.

"There is renewed interest in the improvement of existing copper smelting processes and the development of new technologies. It has become clear that further accurate information on slag properties, in particular, on phase equilibria are required in order to optimize these processes. It is in this context that improved experimental research methodologies have been developed specifically to provide information on phase equilibria at the oxygen partial pressures encountered in copper smelting practice. The methodology involves synthetic slag equilibration at controlled gas atmospheres, quenching and measurement of compositions of phases with an electron probe X-ray microanalyser (EPMA) with wavelength dispersive detectors (WDD). Application of modem analytical tools and careful design of experiments greatly improve accuracy of determination of phase equilibria in complex, multi-phase slag systems. New experimental data on phase equilibria for the copper smelting and converting silicate slags at controlled oxygen partial pressures in the temperature range between 1200°C and 1350°C in the ""Fe0""-Ca0-SiO2 system and in the ""Cu20""-""Fe0""-Ca0-Si02 system in equilibrium with metallic copper are reported, and differences between various data sources are analyzed."

VIRTUALLY every year inventors find one or more startling new uses for one of the varied products of the nonmetallic mineral industries. For example, in November a major step toward positive control of rainfall was made when an experimenter converted a cloud to snow by dropping a few pounds of solid carbon dioxide into it. Other examples of ingenuity in the development of markets and production methods are noted in the following pages. For most of the industrial mineral products one of the outstanding features of 1946 has been the high level of production. There are exceptions, such as quartz crystal and lithium, whose production capacity during the war outgrew current peacetime needs, but they are few. Some technical men point out that this prosperity is not an unmixed blessing to technologic progress, because so much effort must go into day-to-day production problems that relatively little opportunity is left for the pursuit of new developments.

Low-grade iron ore received from the West Singhbhum area of Jharkhand state in India was used to develop a beneficiation flow sheet to remove alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2 ) from the ore to get iron (Fe)-rich product for steel plants. Mineral characterization showed that the main mineral constituents present in the head sample are goethite, limonite, hematite, quartz, clay and gibbsite. The head sample contained about 49.2 percent Fe, 8.79 percent alumina and 12.01 percent silica. The received iron ore sample is amenable to upgradation through beneficiation to get pellet grade concentrate. The beneficiation process was established, involving crushing, screening, jigging, spiral separation, size reduction, desliming and magnetic separation. The process showed significant enrichment in Fe values to 63.5 percent Fe in concentrate, from 49.2 percent Fe. From the developed flow sheet, it is possible to obtain pellet grade fines with 63.5 percent Fe, 2.92 percent SiO2 and 2.61 percent Al2O3 with 50.6 percent weight recovery. The overall tailing loss is 49.4 percent with 34.3 percent Fe, 21.28 percent SiO2 and 14.64 percent Al2O3

"Damping behaviour of aluminite particulate reinforced ZA-27 alloy metal matrix composites processed by compocasting method is studied. The weight percentage of particulate reinforcement is 0,1,2,3, and 4%. A dynamic mechanical· analyzer is used ·to measure the damping capacity and dynamic modulus at the natural frequency of the specimen over a temperature range of 30°C to 300 °C both in the heating and cooling cycle. The damping capacity of the material is found to increase with increase in temperature and weight percentage of aluminite reinforcement although this is accompanied by a decrease in dyliamic modulus.The damping capacity and dynamic young's modulus exhibit a sharp decrease in their values around 300 °C a8 ZA-27 alloy undergoes a first order phase transition in this region which is confirmed by Differential scanning calorimetric studies. Several damping mechanisms have been evaluated theoretically for the material under study. The damping capacity at low temperatures is attributed primarily to coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch induced dislocations and high intrinsic damping of the matrix. At higher temperatures the damping capacity is attributed to ZA-27/aluminite interface, phase transformations and thermoelastic damping.IntroductionMetal matrix composites. (MMCs) offer designers many added benefits, as they are particularly suited for applications requiring good strength at high temperature, good structural rigidity, dimensional stability, and lightweight [1-5]. At present, the usage of ceramic particles as reinforcement in MMCs has attracted considerable interest from scientists and engineers. The MMCs show substantially improved elastic modulus, strength, stiffiless, and tribological properties with low coefficient of thermal expansion compared with the unreinforced matrix material."

"Methane is a signifi cant greenhouse gas. Methane is released from coal seams during the mining process, both in surface and underground operations. This uncontrolled release is termed æfugitive emissionsÆ and in underground mines is transferred to the atmosphere in ventilation air, known as ventilation air methane (VAM). The global VAM emissions are over 369 Mt of CO2-e/a (Butler, 2011; US EPA, 2010). Coal mines may abate this VAM or consider abatement should there be a price on carbon. These fugitive emissions are heading towards ten per cent of AustraliaÆs emissions by 2020 (Department of Climate Change, 2011).There are safety issues involved in VAM destruction. Due to the nature of coal, and coalextraction, unpredicted methane spikes above the lower-explosive-limit (LEL) can occur in theventilation air; for example outburst events or ventilation failure. This could lead to a mine fi re ifthe mine ventilation air was connected to a VAM abatement plant and the risks are left unmitigated.CorkyÆs is working with the mining industry to directly address these safety issues. CorkyÆs calltheir technology VAM RAB, which stands for ventilation air methane regenerative afterburner(VAM RAB). VAM RAB utilises the principles of a thermal oxidiser.This paper discusses fi ve independent layers of protection (ILPs) to fi rst stop methane reachingthe thermal oxidiser and secondly prevent the fl ame front from burning away from the VAMRAB. The test work completed or contemplated includes safety integrity level (SIL) assignmentto various vents, barriers and door systems to prevent a fl ammable mixture reaching the VAMRAB, proven rapid response methane monitoring sourced from the petrochemical industry, anddefl agration experiments to test the eff ectiveness of the passive geometry and active engineeringcontrols. These experiments and SIL assessments indicate that it is possible to safely connect theVAM RAB to a working coal mine.Further work is required to upscale the pilot safety work. Refi nement to the design is possible;for example improvement to safety duct controls once trialled at demonstration scale plus thermalenergy capture for power generation or other applications to provide heat. Nevertheless, thispaper shows how safety issues can be managed by a multilayer of protection approach usingvents, barriers and doors, and appropriate thermal oxidiser geometry."

"Steam Pressure Filtration (SPF) is a modified cake filtration process and is characterized by both washing and excellent de-watering of the filter cake. Compared to conventional gas differential pressure filtration, the filter cake is treated with saturated or superheated steam replacing pressurized air. Invented in the early last century, Steam Pressure Filtration has reached technical maturity in the 1990ies for inorganic particle systems, fine chemicals and coal. Especially the de-watering performance for fine particles systems below 50 µm make Steam Pressure Filtration an excellent option for the processing of fine tailings streams, to produce a stable material, which can be described by the methods of solids mechanics instead of paste rheology. The washing, which is due to the condensing steam, is able to reduce the ion load of the solid. This additional effect is able to generate a dry tailings material, which shows a reduced leaching potential of mobile ions, which originally derive from the process water. INTRODUCTION Steam Pressure Filtration is a process concept especially of hyperbaric filtration, which started its market entry in the 1990ies (Bott 1996, Bott 2002). Even though there have been many attempts to apply steam on filters before, the success story began with the combination of hyperbaric filtration and steam application and the technical solution to limit the steam treatment to a defined zone on the filter. This resulted from the scientific findings that steam mainly enhances the de-watering during the mechanical filtration (Gerl 1999). There are no or minor positive effects of steam application to a filtration process during cake filtration and after the steam breakthrough has occurred. Furthermore that time a sufficient control technology to regulate the steam consumption as well as suitable filter cloths became available. There is a growing need for de-watering technology in the mining industry, not only for the concentrate but also for the tailings streams. Several reasons argue against the established solution of damping the tails as suspension or paste into tailings ponds. There are ecological, political, societal and economic reasons, which question the tailings ponds more and more. Due to the increasing costs in the building and monitoring of tailings dams, which contain the tailing ponds, the concept of dry stocking using filtration technology comes into the game (Jansson 2016). Dry stocking converts the tailings stream form the suspension or paste state, into a material, which can be stockpiled. The latter typically is a moist flowable disperse particle system. The conversion involves a de-watering step, in which different types of filter equipment can be used, e.g. filter presses, membrane filter presses, automatic press filters or hyperbaric filters. For coarse products also vacuum filter can be applied. Due to its excellent de-watering performance and the easy scale-up properties Steam Pressure Filtration is further option for dry tailings stacking."
