The average quantity of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil in 1934 was 638,000 B.t.u., or about as much heat energy as contained in 5 gallons of fuel oil. Although the total heat utilized in 1934 was slightly above 1933, crude runs to stills increased 4 percent, hence the average requirement per barrel declined from 660,000 B.t.u. in 1933 to 638,000 B.t.u. in 1934 (see fig. 1). The average for 1934 constitutes a new record for firing efficiency, being just under the previous low of 1929. Heat consumption at refineries depends on many factors, of which the trends in yields of gasoline and lubricating oils are probably most important. The yield of gasoline is indicative of activity at cracking plants, which type of plant utilizes more than the average amount of heat per gallon of product. The yield of lubricating oils is indicative of the extent to which credo oil is refined; that is, it takes considerably more heat to refine a barrel of crude through lubricating oils than it does to separate only gasoline and kerosene. The yield of gasoline decreased from 43.7 percent in 1933 to 43.4 percent in 1934; on the other hand, the yield of gas oil and fuel oil increased. Although the yield of lubricating oils increased slightly in 1934 the theoretical increase in fuel requirements probably was offset by technical improvements, such as solvent refining.

Fouling of heat recovery process equipment may significantly decrease their heat transfer efficiency. In Copper Flash Smelting process flue dust tends to form build-ups on the heat recovery boiler walls. Thermal transportation properties of copper flash smelting flue dust and its components have been studied. The effects of porosity and temperature on thermal transportation properties have also been determined. The results indicate that dust and its components are effective thermal insulators and build-up layers on the boiler walls are likely to decrease greatly the heat transfer efficiency of the boiler. Decreasing dust layer porosity has a strong increasing effect on thermal conductivity and increasing temperature has a slight decreasing effect on thermal conductivity. The results may be used in CFD-modelling and optimisation of the process.

In our investigation of the Behavior of Calcium Sulphate at Elevated Temperatures with Some Fluxes,' we incidentally studied the decomposition of ferric oxide when heated in a current of dry air. We found that at 1,500° C., with 15-min. periods of heating, Fe²,O³, hardly changed in weight, the greatest loss being 0.23 per cent., and we therefore concluded that the compound remained unchanged at 1,500° C. in a current of dry air. In a more recent experiment we heated Fe²,O³, in a current of dry air and found that there was a decided loss in weight. One is that the dilatometric method can be applied with a large variety of rates of heating and cooling, whereas thermal analysis—that is, the study of the transformational characteristics by means of heat evolution—is limited to the rates of heating and cooling that reveal the evolution of heat. The dilatometer can be used for the study Of reactions at zero rates of heating and cooling; that is, isothermal reactions. As you will hear this afternoon, the rates have been pushed up as far as 500°C. a second. The other advantage is that the dilatometric method shows that a two-phase region is a two-phase region, whereas the thermal analysis merely reveals the temperature at which the rates of heat evolution are greatest.

"A numerical model of the induction hardening process of steel cranks has been developed and the predicted results of temperature and phase distribution during this solid state phase transformation process are verified with experimental data from the literature. This heat treatment process involves heating the crank to the austenitic temperature range followed by rapid quenching in water to harden the surface of the crank. The model has been developed using ABAQUS, commercial FEA software. The formation of martensite, pearlite, and retained austenite phases are modeled and implemented through a user defined function in ABAQUS. A sensitivity study on the various process parameters affecting the amount of phase distribution has been carried out.IntroductionThe type of surface and sub-surface microstructure as well as the residual stresses that are present in a component after manufacturing, significantly affects it fatigue performance. The wear resistance of the automotive components such as crankshaft, gears, camshaft and bearings depends on the surface hardness. In order to achieve the surface hardness, these steel components are subjected to a type of quench hardening heat treatment process. There are several heat treatment processes available for the industrial application to improve the mechanical properties of the final part. Case hardening using induction heating is one of the widely used industrial techniques for improving the surface microstructure of a steel component. It consists of two stages i.e. induction heating cycle, followed by quenching in a fluid medium (usually water or oil)"

INTRODUCTION Thermally induced fracture of rock is one of the oldest rock breakage techniques known to man. Primitive underground miners used fires to heat and crack rocks as early as the third century B.C. (Ref. 1). History aside, however, present-day tunneling and mining interests are reconsidering the use of modern heating units for rock fracture for some very good reasons. One of the most important advantages of many heating techniques is the lack of direct contact between the heating device and the rock. This means a lower wear rate relative to mechanical cutters, and no large reactant force to be supplied by the tunneling machine. In addition to avoiding physical contact, some heating systems (e.g., electron-beam guns and lasers) can deliver energy to a rock face much more intensely than can be conveniently handled mechanically. Thus, heating power densities of the order of lob to 107 watts/in.2 and greater can be achieved with high-power lasers. These high power levels allow much higher instantaneous penetration rates than can be achieved by mechanical cutting. Another advantage that accrues to some thermal techniques, such as, for example, surface spalling, is that the thermal fracture process works particularly well in certain rock types (e.g., granite) that are particularly hard to cut mechanically. The Bureau of Mines heated at 150° to 350° C for 0.5 to 360. days Green River oil shale that had been previously extracted by benzene to provide information on in situ processing conditions, to determine the effect of low-temperature heating on the unconverted kerogen, and to determine the composition of benzene-soluble thermal products. The methods used in determining the composition of the soluble thermal products consisted of fractionation of the soluble material, elemental analysis of the soluble products, fractionation of the polar resins by ion-exchange chromatography, gas chromatographic analysis of [n]-alkanes3 and mass spectral analysis of the branched plus cyclic alkanes and aromatic oils. The methods used to determine the effect of low-temperature heating on the unconverted kerogen remaining in the oil shale heated residues consisted of carbon-hydrogen analysis, volatile material determination, carbon residue determination, and oxidation rate determination. In general, it was concluded that significant increases in the degradation of kerogen to oil occurred between the temperature range of 250° to 350° C; that the composition of the soluble products depends upon the temperature at which they are formed; and that the [n]-alkanes are pyrolytically degraded from the kerogen structure. In particular, the 250° C heating temperature is beneficial to the formation of branched plus cyclic alkanes. Also, the heated and unconverted oil shale kerogen and the soluble thermal products become more aromatic as the temperature increases from 150° to 350° C.

Ocean mining has a number of problems which are critical to its development: ? Political hurdles on national and international stages ? The worldwide economic situation, with the possibliity of a recession ? Financial difficulties in funding further work ? Technical problems for the development of ocean mining and transport subsystems ? Demands for technology transfer This paper touches the last two points and provides some thoughts for discussion and creative objectification. The many technical problems of ocean mining will be identified and some proposed solutions will be investigated relative to the state-of-the-art technology of ocean mining and nodule transport. An outlook into the future attempts identification of the steps necessary to eventually develop components for workable systems that are not only technically but also economically feasible.

"Despite the recognized influence of product fineness on line capacity and downstream process performance, few mineral concentrators today use particle size measurement of the final product in automatic control applications for particle size. ‘Near-line’ particle size instrumentation has existed for decades and is utilized in modern concentrators, but low availability and measurement frequency, due to problems with slurry sampling and transport systems, make these technologies unreliable for use in automatic control. An innovative technology for real-time particle size measurement on individual hydrocyclones, named CYCLONEtrac™ PST (particle size tracking), has been developed by CiDRA Minerals Processing, and proven in commercial installations, demonstrating near 100% availability with minimal maintenance requirements, thus overcoming the limitations of previous technologies. Potential stakeholders require convincing, reliable information regarding the economic value delivered by automatic grind control projects. In this paper we present a methodology for estimating such value with the CYCLONEtrac™ PST technology, and demonstrate unique opportunities to improve process stability and performance. Based on actual plant data accumulated over time, the evaluation approach assesses and highlights the significant potential process improvement that can be expected with the particle size tracking technology. As an extension of previous work, in this paper we present the key operating criteria for optimizing the production of valuable metals and increase mill throughput by identifying the optimal grind size. As this requires operating closer to the process boundaries, accurate real-time particle size measurements, such as those provided by the CYCLONEtrac™ PST system, become essential for achieving the maximum potential value from every operation. For further illustration, data from three different copper plants is compared.Introduction Owners and operators of mineral concentrators constantly search for the most economically attractive way to increase the output of valuable metal. A logical approach is to identify a key parameter that has the greatest impact on the performance of multiple stages of the process and then use a holistic analysis methodology to determine how this key parameter can be controlled to optimize the final output.Particle size is widely recognized as such a key parameter; however, very few concentrators today use real-time particle size measurements for automatic control of the final product size due, to a large extent, to the inherent limitations of existing technologies. ‘Near-line’ particle size measurement instrumentation, which has been used for decades, typically suffers from low availability because the fundamental measurement technologies were developed for other, less demanding industries and then adapted to the harsh environment of the typical mineral concentration process. An outline of the key differences among the available technologies used for particle size measurement in comminution circuits has been completed in previous work, and plant data has proven the benefits of measurements on individual cyclones – something that, until now, has not been possible (Cirulis, 2017)."

The heat of formation at 0°C of the intermetallic compound AgMg as a function of composition has been determined by tin-solution calorimetry. In this technique, the heat of formation is determined as the difference in the heat effects, at infinite dilution, on dissolution of the compound and a mixture of its components added alternately to liquid tin from a reference temperature, such as 0°C. The experimental technique and method of calculation have been described elsewhere.' The compound AgMg is a 0 electron compound with a CsCl structure.2 In nonstoichiometric compositions of the compound, atoms of the excess component are substituted on the AgMg lattice.3,4 The homogeneity range is approximately 43 to 52 at. pct Mg at room temperature and 38 to 65 at. pct Mg at 500Oc.2 Single-phase alloys outside the homogeneity range at room temperature can be prepared by quenching. The specimens used in this investigation contained from 39.0 to 54.8 at. pct Mg. They were made available, together with analyses, by the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Co. Metallographic examination of the quenched specimens containing 39.0 and 54.8 at. pct Mg gave no indication of the presence of a precipitated phase. The measured heats of formation are listed in Table I. In a calorimetric run, four to six additions each of a specimen and the corresponding mixture of the components were made. One or two calorimetric runs were carried out with each composition depending on the amount of samples available. The limits stated in the table represent the experimental precision and not the absolute accuracy of the measurements. Thermodynamic investigations of the compound AgMg have been made by Trzebiatowski and Terpilowski 5 and Kachi.6,7 The heats of formation at 500°C derived from the combined electromotive-force values of these investigators8 are more exothermic than the heats of formation at 0°C reported here, Fig. 1. The differences cannot be explained by the difference in temperature. This is shown by the published heat capacity of the stoichiometric compound, which obeys the Kopp-Neumann rule from 0" to 500oC.9 The heats of formation derived from equilibrium data are generally considered to be less accurate than those determined by calorimetric methods because small errors in the change of the equilibrium values with temperature have a large effect on the calculated value of the heat of formation. The heats of formation derived from the combined published electromotive-force values reach a maximum at 56.0 at. pct Mg.8 Kachi reports a maximum of -4.7 kcal per g-atom at the stoichiometric composition.7 The present results also indicate a maximum at or near the stoichio metric composition, Fig. 1.

Keywords: Thermal conductivity of sulphates, flash smelting, heat recovery boiler, flue dust Accretions and build-ups in metallurgical heat recovery boilers decrease the efficiency of the heat transfer and may cause process shut downs. Transient plane source method (Hot Disk) has been applied to measure the thermal conductivities of the Copper Flash Smelting flue dusts. Thermal conductivities of copper, iron and zinc sulphates, and process flue dusts were measured. The results indicate that all the components are effective thermal insulators, having a thermal conductivity of less than 1 W/mK. Decreasing dust layer porosity has an increasing effect on thermal conductivity. Insulating layers on the boiler walls decrease greatly the heat transfer efficiency of the boiler. The gathered information will be used in CFD-modelling of the process, and in the process control.

The heals of formation at 78", 195, and 273°K of the ternary compound h3SbTe2 based on the elements and based on the binary compounds In Sb and [inTe have been measured. The heats of formation at these temperatlcres of the binary compounds In Sb and In Te based on the elements have also been determined. Heal contents and free energies of the three compounds have been calculated from 0° lo 80I)°K. The free energies of joyrrzalion, heats of formations, and entropies of formation at 298°K have also been calculated. The results shown that the tertnary compound is metastable with vespecl to InSh and ln Te below 696 °K. bul is slable above that temperature. The weaker bonding of results in a positice entropy of formation which with incrensirzg temperature makes increasing negative conlvihtclions to the free energy and above 696°K renders the compound slable. THE ternary compound In3SbTez occurring in the quasi-binary system In Sb- In Te' forms on cooling at 829°K by a peritectic reaction.' Observations at 673" and 573 K have shown that this ternary compound decomposes slowly into the binary compounds InSb and1n~e.l'' It has not been possible to analyze the metastable behavior of the ternary compound because up to the present time data on its thermodynamic properties have been lacking. Some information on the binary compounds, however, is available. The heat of formation of InTe at 273°K and its free energy at 673°K are kn~wn.~'~ The heats of formation of InSb at 78", 273', 298", and 723°K have been measured5-' and its heat capacity between approximately 12" and 300"Kg9l0 is also known. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 78% 195% and 273°K of the ternary compound In3SbTez have been measured. The heats of formation of the binary compounds InSb and InTe at these temperatures have been obtained by combining new calorimetric results with previously published data. The heat contents and free energies of the three compounds at various temperatures from 0" to 800°K have been calculated. Against the background of this information, the metastability of the ternary compound will be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.l) Preparation of Specimens. The materials used consisted of the elements indium, antimony, and tellurium, the binary compounds InSb and InTe, and the ternary compound In3SbTez. The elements, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., had a nominal purity of 99.999+ pct. The compound InSb was Cominco semiconductor grade; the compound InTe was prepared from the elements by melting under a vacuum of 10-h m Hg followed by slow cooling. Three batches of specimens of the compound In3SbTez were used. One batch was prepared by melting appropriate amounts of the elements in an evacuated and sealed Vycor tube. The melt was held at approximately 100°K above the liquidus for about 8 hr, shaken repeatedly, and quenched into a mixture of ice and water. The specimen was annealed in vacuum at 760°K for 4 weeks. In preparing a second batch, a mixture of the component elements was melted and quenched in water. The resulting ingot was powdered. The powder was pressed into pellets, which were annealed in vacuum at 748" to 773°K for 4 weeks. A third batch was prepared in the same manner as the second, except that the starting materials were InSb and InTe rather than the elements. Metallographic examination of samples of the three batches and X-ray diffraction examination of a sample of the second batch did not reveal evidence of microsegregation or a second phase. The results obtained with the three batches showed no systematic differences. 1.2) Calorimetry. The calorimetric method has been described in detail." Samples of the compound In3SbTez, mechanical mixtures of InSb and InTe in the proportion of 1:2, and mechanical mixtures of indium, antimony, and tellurium in the proportion of 3:1:2 were added to a bismuth-rich bath at 623°K in a metal-solution calorimeter. These additions were made from 78°K (liquid nitrogen), 195°K (dry ice and acetone), and 273°K (ice and water). The heat effects of the additions were measured. The difference in the heat effects of the additions of a compound and the additions of the mixtures of its constituents, adjusted for differences in the concentration of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. In the concentration range not exceeding 1.5 at. pct solute, the heat effect of the additions was a linear function of concentration. The heat of formation refers to the temperature from which the additions were made, namely, 78", 195", or 273°K. Several calibrating additions were made in each calorimetric run. The calculated heat capacity of the calorimeter and hence the calculated heat effects of the additions of samples depend upon the values adopted for the heat contents of the calibrating substance. "Abstract Vibration limits for buildings with respect to ground vibrations from pile driving published in international standards are reviewed. At first, relevant vibration parameters are defined and the evaluation of vibration records is described. The sensitivity of structures to different vibration parameters (displacement, velocity and acceleration) is discussed. Most vibration standards relate to blasting activities, the dynamic characteristics of which can be significantly different to those from construction activities and in particular, pile driving. Several vibration standards are reviewed. The Swedish vibration standard is described in detail, as it is the only one accounting for several important factors, such as ground conditions, building material, and type of building foundation. Many standards limit the guidance to values based on the dominant vibration frequency and a wide scatter of frequency-dependent vibration limits exists. It is difficult to compare limiting values of ground vibrations proposed in different standards.1. INTRODUCTIONFor poor ground conditions, placing structures on piles is the most common foundation solution, while sheet piles are widely used to support deep excavations. Piles and sheet piles must often be installed in the close vicinity to buildings, structures or installations in the ground, which can be affected by ground movements and vibrations, (Massarsch and Fellenius, 2014). In many areas, environmental concerns with respect to noise and ground vibrations can restrict or even prohibit driving of piles or sheet piles or reduce the efficiency of installation. The design engineer must prescribe – often at an early stage of a project — the permissible levels of ground vibrations in order to minimize the potential risk of building damage. When seeking guidance from the literature, little or practically no applicable information can be found on how to assess permissible levels of ground vibrations."

The paper describing the raining operations at the Mt. Hope mine, Mt. Lope, N. J., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs of various mining operations in the United States. Mt. Hope mine produces magnetite ore. It is situated in the general northern part of the State of New Jersey. The towns of Rockaway, Wharton, and Dover lie within a radius of 4 miles from the mine. Dover is 40 miles from New York City.

The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by: (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war material; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this Critical fuel situation, an investigation was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England.

"Abstract - Rare-element pegmatites may host several economic commodities, such as tantalum (Taoxide minerals), tin (cassiterite), lithium (ceramic-grade spodumene and petalite), and cesium (pollucite). Key geological features that are common to pegmatites in the Superior province of Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, and in other large tantalum deposits worldwide, can be used in exploration.An exploration project for rare-element pegmatites should begin with an examination of a regional geology map. Rare-element pegmatites occur along large regional-scale faults in greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphic terranes. They are typically hosted by mafic metavolcanic or metasedimentary rocks, and are located near peraluminous granite plutons (A/CNK > 1.0). Once a peraluminous granite pluton has been identified, then the next step is to determine if the pluton is barren or fertile. Fertile granites have elevated rare element contents, Mg/Li ratio < 10, and Nb/Ta ratio < 8. They commonly contain blocky K-feldspar and green muscovite. Key fractionation indicators can be plotted on a map of the fertile granite pluton to determine the fractionation direction: presence of tourmaline, beryl, and ferrocolumbite; Mn content in garnet; Rb content in bulk K-feldspar; and Mg/Li and Nb/Ta ratios in bulk granite samples. Pegmatite dikes with the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta deposits occur the greatest distance (up to 10 km) from the parent granite.Metasomatized host rocks are an indication of a nearby rare-element pegmatite. Metasomatic aureoles can be identified by their geochemistry: elevated Li, Rb, Cs, B, and F contents; and by their mineralogy: presence of tourmaline, (Rb, Cs)-enriched biotite, holmquistite, muscovite, and rarely garnet.Once a pegmatite dike has been located, the next step is to assess its potential to contain Ta mineralization. Pegmatites with the highest degree of fractionation (and thus the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta) contain blocky K-feldspar with >3,000 ppm Rb, K/Rb < 30, and >100 ppm Cs; and coarsegrained green muscovite with >2,000 ppm Li, >10,000 ppm Rb, >500 ppm Cs, and >65 ppm Ta. Pegmatites with Ta mineralization usually contain Li-rich minerals (e.g., spodumene, petalite, lepidolite, elbaite, amblygonite, and lithiophilite) and may contain Cs-rich minerals (e.g., pollucite, Cs-rich beryl). The ore minerals of Ta are commonly manganotantalite, manganocolumbite, wodginite, and microlite; Ta-rich cassiterite is also commonly present. Tantalum mineralization tends to occur in albitic aplite, mica-rich (lepidolite, cleavelandite ± lepidolite), and spodumene/petalite pegmatite zones."

The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation in order to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration.

Then on April 8, President Trump issued an executive order opening federal land to coal mining to reinvigorate “America’s beautiful clean coal industry.” As the nation seeks to identify reliable solutions to meet its ever-growing energy needs, the administration is going all in on proven, reliable and readily available natural resources, including coal. This means the coal industry is positioned to play a pivotal role in the administration’s stated energy policy, and highwall mining could be an integral factor in helping the industry optimize the extraction of ore to make the most of this moment. The White House noted in a statement that the United States’ “abundance of energy and natural resources … have historically powered our Nation’s economic prosperity” and vowed to remove regulations that have hindered developing these resources — regulations that resulted in job reductions and higher energy costs for U.S. consumers, while weakening national security. “There has been an increase in electricity prices in the United States of over 30 percent in the past four years,” said Rich Nolan, president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association (NMA). “This administration wants to focus on that, inflation and on increasing electricity availability to help lower the price over time by incentivizing energy policy. Coal is definitely a high priority for this administration.” Part of the White House’s strategy is to facilitate investment in coal-fired plants. The shift comes at a time when the reliance of coal-powered energy plants has been waning. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 7.5 GW of electrical capacity from coal-fired plants was retired in 2024, following the retirement of 22.3 GW of electric generating power the two years prior.
