"This study focuses on comparing the “blinding” effectiveness of various organic additives as part of a general review of using organic additives to mitigate preg-robbing and improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores. The laboratory results compared the impact of various organic additives on the prevention of gold adsorption using both activated carbon and ore samples containing carbonaceous matter, generally referred to as total carbonaceous matter (TCM). Although several organic reagents were found to have a significant blinding effect on activated carbon, these results did not translate into increased gold leaching efficiencies with actual ore samples.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing refractory ores, which contain carbonaceous matter, have been problematic in cyanide plants for many years. In industry, preg-robbing by carbonaceous matter may be mitigated using various techniques including flotation, to remove the carbonaceous matter; addition of blinding agents, to passivate the carbon surface and prevent adsorption of gold cyanide complex; roasting, to partially or fully destroy the carbonaceous matter; chemical oxidation (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986); pressure oxidation; or microbial deactivation (Dunne, Staunton, & Afewu, 2013). Carbon-in-Leach and Resin-in-Leach are also used as process alternatives in which activated carbon or resins are used to compete with the carbonaceous matter for gold cyanide adsorption. For highly preg-robbing ores, thiosulphate leaching may be considered as an alternative to conventional cyanide chemistry (Baláz, et al., 2000). Natural carbonaceous matter is composed mainly of hydrocarbons, organic acids, and graphitic/amorphous elemental carbon. Natural elemental carbon that behaves as activated carbon is considered to be the main reason for preg-robbing, although the true nature of this phenomenon is not fully understood (Tan, Feng, Lukey, & van Deventer, 2005). In general, the hydrocarbon fraction is assumed to have negligible interaction with gold, while organic acids, such as humic acids, may form complexes with gold, inhibiting its extraction in cyanide solutions. Organic reagents have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Abotsi & Osseo-Asare (1987) tested various organic compounds, with two possible effects in mind. First, the organic compounds were expected to adsorb onto the surface of the solids as anionic/cationic species; the resulting electrostatic interactions between the Au(CN)2- anion and the negatively/positively charged surface would inhibit/enhance the gold uptake. Second, the organic reagents were expected to coat the surface of the carbonaceous component in the ore, limiting the available adsorption sites and reducing gold losses. "The Archean Blake River Group is best known from a central volcanic complex in Rouyn-Noranda. This volcano-tectonic depression, delimited by the Hunter Creek fault to the north and the Horne Creek fault to the south, is interpreted to be a cauldron approximately 20 km in diameter. Its western and eastern boundaries are the Flavrian Plutonand the D'Alembert shear zone respectively. The complex has an exposed stratigraphic thickness of 10.5 km. Two cycles, composed of andesitic units overlain by bimodal, andesite - rhyolite units, are observed in the area, and are, in turn, overlain by an andesitic unit interpreted to be the lower part of a third cycle.The southern sector of the Blake River Group, south of the central volcanic complex, is considered to be outside the limits of the cauldron, but partly contemporaneous with it. The maximum stratigraphic thickness exposed in this area is 4 .6 km. At least two cycles occur in this sector. The oldest unit, a pre-cauldron andesitic to basaltic unit, occurs only in the southern part of the sector. In the north, two partial andesite - bimodal cycles, interpreted as contemporaneous with the cauldron volcanism, are observed.The eastern sector of the Blake River Group, east of the central volcanic complex, apparently overlies the complex. Two units are observed in this sector: a lower bimodal unit and an uper andesitic unit. The bimodal unit is coupled with the uppermost andesitic unit of the central volcanic complex to form a cycle, and the andesitic unit is considered to be the uppermost unit of the Blake River Group. The total exposed stratigraphic thickness in the sector is 2.5 km.The western sector of the Blake River Group, north and west of the central volcanic complex, is interpreted as the lateral equivalent of the complex. Three andesite - bimodal cycles are exposed in this sector, giving a total stratigraphic thickness of9 .5 km. The two lower cycles correspond directly to the central volcanic complex cycles; this correlation is facilitated by two stratigraphic marker units observed on either side of the Hunter Creek fault: the Fish-roe rhyolite flow, east of the Flavrian pluton, and a spherulitic rhyolite lapilli-tuff, west of the Flavrian pluton.Many of the volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits found in the central volcanic complex are spatially and temporally associated with synvolcanic faults, and felsic domes and feeder dykes that are the sites of felsic volcanism in the bimodal units. However, these features also occur outside the central volcanic complex, and the similarities recognized in this work between the complex and the surrounding area suggest that such deposits need not be restricted to the central volcanic complex. The presence of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits outside the complex confirms this."

So many ceramics look the same, but are they?In the past 20 years, there have been significant changes in the materials available, as well as changes to the supply chain, for ceramics used in wear applications in the hard rock mining industry. The biggest change in supply has been from the Chinese market, with many suppliers promoting their products as æstate of the artÆ. Some of them are state of the art, but are they all? There will be some concluding remarks in this respect.There are still some outstanding new developments coming from the more traditional suppliers and these should not be ignored. However, as an end user, how can one be sure that the product received meets the technical specifications of that material?This paper will address some of the questions on how to differentiate between different materials by giving a technical overview of the current (but not exclusive) range of popular ceramics, plus incorporating how these ceramics are used in process plant products by presenting case studies. The presentation will include technical data coupled with micrographs of various ceramics to illustrate just why they are different.It will also be shown that by careful selection of the wear material, it is possible to gain significant benefit when using superior materials in an ore processing plant. The impact of cost of the products, life, process efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs will be considered using cyclone components as an example.The properties (including the microstructures) of the various ceramics will be compared to the application in order to get some understanding of what is considered good or bad.Misra and Finnie (1982) summarised their paper, æA review of Abrasive Wear of MetalsÆ by saying:à it is difficult to give guidelines for selecting materials for abrasive wear resistance. Each application is a different one, and a design engineer has to take into account various other factors such as impact, fatigue and corrosion which are often coupled with abrasive wear. The principles and utility of in-situ coal gasification are discussed, and a first field test conducted by the Alberta Research Council in 1976 near Forestburg, Alberta, is described. The test was carried out in a 12-ft subbituminous coal seam under 60 feet of cover. Within this seam, a 30 by 60-foot block , containing approximately 650 tons of coal, was delineated by four injection/production holes which were oriented to take advantage of the natural fracture system in the coal. Linkage between holes was established by reverse combustion and gasification was accomplished by injecting air into the ignited coal. No steam was injected but operating pressures were adjusted to utilize formation waters for partial carbon -steam gasification. The coal gasification runs lasted six weeks and gasified an estimated 900 tons of coal ,' during sustained periods of gasification, a fuel gas with heating values of between 110 and 150 Btu/scf was obtained. Plans are now being developed for excavating the test site and inspecting the subsurface cavities created by gasification.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the recent applications and improvements made in the process and equipment for the recovery of metallic zinc from secondary metals by means of high temperature electric resistor furnace distillation. The process and high temperature furnace, as developed by Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, Research and Development Department, was described in a previous paper. † Since the publication of that paper the process and equipment have been licensed to others. Consequently its field of application has been expanded, particularly for the treatment of scrap brass, galvanizers dross and scrap zinc. Other applications are being considered, particularly the melting of metallic titanium and special alloys requiring a controlled atmosphere. Consideration is also being given to modification in design that would allow the melting of copper cathodes for the production of oxygen-free and electrolytic tough pitch copper shapes without the necessity of blowing and poling. In the design of a furnace for melting copper cathodes it is intended that the fundamental principle of charging the solid material into a large pool of molten metal through a double door charging vestibule as shown in Fig 3 of the previous paper, † would be adhered to and, in addition, either dehydrated and desulphurized producer gas or commercial nitrogen, that is, approximately 96 pct nitrogen, 2 pct hydrogen 2 pct CO, also dehydrated, would be used to provide a protective atmosphere for the resistors and to flush out more soluble gases from the molten copper. The operation of a small unit producing approximately 1000 lb of copper per hr has shown that the commercial nitrogen will allow the production of tough pitch electrolytic copper when the metal is transferred from the meltdown unit contemplated to a special type induction unit where the oxygen absorption and temperature can be controlled. Standard practice in treating low grade scrap brass has been to oxidize the zinc by blowing air through the molten metal. This operation results in the recovery of approximately two-thirds or less of the zinc content of the brass in the form of an impure zinc oxide having only a fraction of the value of the zinc in metallic form. The balance of the zinc is lost to slag, fume and drosses. Fig 1 shows the revised flow sheet of the process for the treatment of scrap brass. For this application and as shown on the flow sheet a low frequency induction furnace has been substituted for the Wilkins-Poland type as a melting unit. This type of furnace has been found the most suitable for the purpose as will be shown by the following discussion. Serap Brass The melting of refinery scrap brass preparatory to distillation presents a melting problem quite different from the usual melting of brass mill scrap for recasting because refinery scrap is a heterogeneous mixture of alloys each having different melting and boiling points, and coated with a variety of corrosion products and foreign materials. In addition, brass and copper plated pieces of sheet iron, stainless steel, ceramic materials, and others are present that do not melt except at temperatures above the boiling point of the liquid bath. In the previous paper it is noted that difficulty was encountered in the melting of refinery grade scrap brass without excessive loss of zinc by volatilization and that 5 to 10 pct razorite flux was used to alleviate this condition. While this flux was successful in preventing the excessive loss of zinc by volatilization it interposed a low heat conductivity layer between the source of heat and liquid charge and resulted in lowering the melting rate of the furnace. This same problem presents itself in all types of furnaces in which the metal is heated by radiation and conduction from above the charge. Remining of abandoned coal mines in Pennsylvania requires the implementation of pollution abatement and mining techniques called Best Management Practices (BMPs). Water-quality data from over 100 remining sites with more than 230 abandoned discharges were analyzed with respect to the types of BMPs employed to abate the pollution loadings of acidity, iron, manganese, aluminum and sulfate. Discharges exhibiting a significant decrease in acidity were most highly associated with sites where large volumes of alkaline materials were encountered (66.7%) or added (63.7%). The best results for iron loading were achieved with large-quantity alkaline addition (54.6%) and water handling systems (47.8%). Water handling systems (47.4%), daylighting (40.7%), and revegetation (40.2%) were associated with significantly lower manganese loadings. The decreases in acidity and sulfate loads associated with increasing the amount of alkaline material in the backfill indicates that the production of acid mine drainage can be retarded by adding large quantities of alkaline materials.

Until recently, the fire protection systems used to protect mining equipment were based on generically designed, off the- shelf concepts. These systems were reliant on single agent approaches and were generally comprised of a series of small twenty or thirty pound chemical canisters that would discharge their contents when triggered by thermal detection means. As the equipment grew in capacity, the logic used to increase the protection was to add more chemical canisters to the system. Hydraulic excavators and large-scale mining trucks grew dramatically in size into the 1990?s and beyond; with this growth came the increase in major losses due to fire. This was evidenced throughout this period, and continues to be of great concern today. During this presentation you will learn of the significant changes that have come about as a result of this history. Today, dual-agent products, infrared detection and unit-specific, engineered systems are the primary phrases used when discussing how to best protect this equipment from fire loss. This session is a must for anybody looking to optimally protect their equipment assets and for those looking to renew and/or secure new insurance for high value equipment in the future.

In February 1996, ATLANTIC, COPPER completed the construction of a Project for Expansion and Environmental Improvements in its Smelter and Electrolytic Refinery located in Huelva. Following the expansion, the new operating concept is based on the simultaneous blowing of two converters, while increasing throughput in the Flash Furnace up to the level required to deliver matte to both converters. While the production level planned with the Project.(270,000 MTPY of copper from concentrates) was reached the following June, work since then has been carried out to optimize the new equipment .and to develop a new operating shedule. This paper describes operational experiences from the start up of the Expansion Project, difficulties encountered and operating improvements introduced, which have allow an increase of production levels up to 300,000 MTPY of copper.

Decarburization in the Fe-C system by oxygen top blowing has been studied in laboratory -scale experiments. It is shown that equilibrium models fail to explain or predict either the course of refining or endpoint conditions, giving results which either are incompatible with the chemistry of the system or do not satisfy material balance requirements. Also the path of decarburization was found to vary even for heats made under apparently identica1 conditions. A promising approach to analyzing the decarburization results is to relate oxygen efficiency fm carbon removal to bath carbon content. This relationship for Fe-C heats shows the same range of oxygen efficiencies as is obtained in pilot-plant and commercial heats using hot metal-scrap charges. This implies that oxygen transfer is primarily controlled by the decarburization reaction itself, independent of other refining reactions. Therefore, it should be possible to study separately decarburization and slag-metal reactions. DECARBURIZATION is probably the most important reaction in steelmaking. Not only is it a main reaction in the refining of iron to steel but it also provides the stirring action in the bath necessary for the diffusion processes to proceed at reasonable rates so as to make a steelmaking process practical. Kinetics of decarburization in the open-hearth process has been a subject of investigation for many years.&apos;-B It is generally accepted that at steelmaking temperatures the rate of homogeneous C-0 reaction is extremely high and cannot constitute a rate-controlling step. Diffusion of oxygen through a boundary film in the metal phase has been suggested by arken&apos; as rate-determining. Recently, Larsen and sordah16 concluded from experiments in a laboratory furnace that, with oxygen supplied from air or combustion gases, the rate of "steady-state" carbon boil is controlled essentially by a diffusion process of O2, Co2, or H2O through a film of nitrogen above the slag surface. Displacing this diffusion film by a stream of nearly pure oxygen produced a ten-fold increase in the rate of carbon boil with the rates of slag-metal oxygen transfer, bubble nucle-ation, and other steps all apparently able to keep pace. In the top-blown basic oxygen process, however, the transport of oxygen takes a more direct route. and the state of bath agitation is much more turbulent than in the open-hearth process. In addition, direct contact of the gas with the metal phase provides opportunity for direct oxidation of carbon. It is likely that the rate-limiting factor for the decarburization reaction will be different. However, only a few descriptive discussions of the subject have been reported in the literature.10-l2 Studies of the decarburization kinetics based on plant or pilot-plant data are necessarily complicated and are influenced by other refining reactions which occur simultaneously. In order to investigate the mechanism of decarburization, experiments have been conducted in which carbon-saturated iron melts were top-blown with pure oxygen over a range of conditions. It is hoped that this study will form a foundation on which a more basic understanding of this important reaction may be built. EXPERIMENTS One group of blowing experiments was made in a standard 200-lb induction furnace and another group in a 500-lb induction furnace. The furnaces were modified to the general shape of a basic oxygen furnace by adding a rammed refractory cone section to the regular crucible body. Crucible and cone were of high MgO (95 pct) material. A water-cooled lance, 1/2 in. in diam and threaded at one end to take a nozzle, was used for blowing oxygen. The lance with its water and oxygen lines was supported on a cantilever arrangement so that it could be moved up, down, or sideways. Oxygen of 99.5 pct purity was supplied from a cylinder and metered through a rotameter equipped with pressure and temperature gages. Another pressure gage was located at the top of the lance. A schematic diagram of the assembly is shown in Fig. 1. Before each experiment, a weighed amount of ingot iron, containing 0.02 pct C, < 0.01 pct Si, 0.10 pct Mn, 0.019 pct P, and 0.015 pct S, was charged in the furnace and melted down by induction heating. Prior to 1907 nearly all coke was made in beehive ovens, and most of the gas produced was made in the old-style gas retorts, and while there were a few coke plants in southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia and Kentucky operating on high-volatile coals the proportion of the total product made by them was small and usually was used locally. The greater part of the coke made, and the coal gas produced, came from the Pittsburgh seam of western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, which was then regarded as the standard coking and gas coal of the country, and the best coal available anywhere for these purposes. With the advent of the byproduct oven and the building of coke plants at the furnaces, the restriction of the use of one grade of coal for making coke was removed and the use of mixtures of low-volatile and high-volatile coals began. The change in the locations of the coke plants removed the necessity of using Connellsville coal and also made sources of gas available to the public utilities other than of their own manufacture. Most of the first oven plants were built at points distant from the Connellsville region and this afforded an opportunity for the use of coals from the southern Appalachian fields, which were then at approximately equal distances from the ovens. Since that time development has been made on a number of seams of coal of great purity in southern West Virginia, southwestern Virginia and eastern Kentucky, which have been largely used for gas, cokemaking and metallurgical purposes where low amounts of ash, sulfur and phosphorus are determining factors. These coals are much lower in the objectionable elements than most of the coal shipped from the Pittsburgh seam, or than any northern coal, and when blended with low-volntile cod produce coke in byproduct ovens that is not excelled for any purpose by any coal mined in this country, and is equaled very seldom. Coal from several of these scams is shipped in great quantities without beneficlation and is lower in ash and sulfur than any but the best washed product from the Pittsburgh seam in the north. The writer has made a study of these coals to ascertain their relative qualities and the areas and reserves of coal available in each of them. No attention has been paid to the coals of Alabama, which do not compete with any of these coals, and no coal of equivalent quality is found in

Brief history of photography Silver- based photographic materials are made for many applications that require different photochemical and physical response characteristics and a wide variety of formats and sizes. All of these products are laminates consisting of a surface-treated support and bonded gelatin layers. Two basic types predominate - films and papers. Films have transparent or translucent plastic supports (mostly cellulose tri-acetate and polyester), while papers have mostly a paper core coated with polyethylene resin layers on both sides (RC type). The front layer contains white titanium dioxide to provide high reflectivity and the back layer a matting agent. However, a few so-called fiber base papers are still supplied. These have a high quality paper base coated with a baryta layer ; i.e. a gelatin layer containing white barium sulfate. The manufacture of photographic film and paper supports requires special procedures and equipment, because of the severe requirements for chemical purity, optical integrity and uniformity (see Table 1 on page 10 for a list of the principal makers of film and paper supports).

The regional geologic setting is essentially a volcanic island arc built upon an oceanic basement, consisting of basalt and minor pelagic sediments (the Tinombo Formation of Eocene - lower Miocene age. Trail et. al. 1974). -- An east-west chain of intermediate and acid calc-alkaline volcanoes (the Bilungala Volcanics) was built on the oceanic basement during the Miocene. The Bilungala Volcanics are flanked to the north largely by contemporaneous andesites and volcanoclastic sediments of the Dolokapa Formation. During middle to upper Miocene time the Bilungala Volcanics were invaded by large masses of predominantly dioritic intrusive rock and it is within one of these dioritic intrusive complexes, the Bone Diorite, that the cluster of porphyry copper systems occurs. Renewed volcanic activity in the Plio-Pleistocene produced acid pyroclastic rocks (the Pinogu Volcanicsi whose distribution is controlled by present-day topography. Structural trends, largely interpreted from SLR imagery, are pre- dominantly NW or NIWJ. The right-lateral Gorontalo Fault, which trends hW through the town of Gorontalo (Katili, 19691 is the most prominent structural feature. Many of the major structures in the Tapadaa district have similar orientations and may be sympathetically related to the Gorontalo Fault.

Studies showing the effect of mixing hot exhaust gases with the intake air of a four-stroke-cycle Diesel engine are described. The results indicate a marked increase in carbon monoxide in tip exhaust gases, a decrease in oxides of nitrogen, and no significant effect on aldehydes. The increase in carbon monoxide was greater at higher fuel-air ratios and was caused partly by the increase in fuel-air ratio end partly by the decrease in oxygen concentration resulting when exhaust has was added. The application of these results to the use of Diesel engines underground is considered.

The Bureau of mines evaluated the elution of uranyl carbonate from a strong base resin with a mixed carbonate eluant in a fluidized system. The system consisted of a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) elution column with a continuous flow of solution, except for short periods when the resin increments were withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl carbonate from the mill-loaded strong base resin with an eluant composed of 1.0 [M] NaaCOs plus 1.0 [M] NH4HCO3 was studied. The effects of solution flow rate, aqueous-to-resin flow ratio, column diameter, compartment height, initial resin concentration, and column length were examined. The experimental data indicate that for the eluant examined, a resin residence time of 240 minutes is necessary to attain 90-percent elution efficiency. Also provided is a technique for sizing an elution MCIX column form pilot plant experimental data.

A two-dimensional multi-scale solidification model was developed to study the heat transfer, fluid flow, and grain growth occurring in the molten pool during the laser engineered net shaping (LENS) process. This model coupled the finite element method to calculate mass, energy and momentum transport in the macroscale with the cellular automaton technique to calculate liquid/solid phase change at the microscale. The validation of the model was performed by comparing the simulation results with experimental data from previously published works, showing good agreement in temperature distribution and the dendrite morphology (size and shape). The simulation results showed that Marangoni convection, caused by the temperature gradient along the pool surface, played a critical role in determining the flow pattern in the molten pool and exerted influence on the pool size and shape. It was also found that columnar dendrites can be formed, with dendrite arm spacings as fine as a few microns due to the high cooling rate during the LENS process. In addition, the influence of fluid flow on the dendrite growth in the pool was discussed.

"A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob. INTRODUCTION During a series of stakeholder meetings, a near unanimous concern was expressed related to maintenance of effective ventilation airflow on longwall faces. There was a strong interest expressed regarding the impacts of face length and caving characteristics on the ability to maintain adequate face airflow levels. This study seeks to understand and improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations across the longwall face by assessing airflow variations in terms of roof caving characteristics and face length. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers seek to identify flow paths of ventilation airflow on longwall panels with variations in roof caving characteristics and longwall face lengths. The project research aims to develop an understanding of the role of gas dynamics in variable broken rock, interactions with ventilation airflow and methane concentrations across the longwall face area. The research also addresses continuous ventilation monitoring along the shield line to provide early detection of gas exchanges between face and gob, and thus improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations around the face. In the context of this paper, the longwall gob refers to the pillared area behind the shields. This work reports on results from one project task to conduct field based research using a tracer gas to describe face air and gob area gas movement in a bleederless longwall ventilation system that incorporated a back return."

"Fine coal beneficiation in a dry way is considerably imperative for the efficient utilization and conservation of coal resource in drought regions, especially for China. In this study, a continuous vibrated gas-fluidized bed separator was established and developed based on the results of laboratory batch separation results. The fluidization behavior and the effects of several main parameters including superficial air velocity, vibrational parameters, bed height and separating time were systematically investigated. The results showed that the bed expansion increased linearly with the superficial air velocity and theoretically, higher bed expansion benefited the hindered settling process of fine coal particles. However, larger superficial air velocity would induce intense fluctuation in bed surface and a poor performance of density segregation. The conveying velocity of particles was mainly determined by the vibration angle and a predicted model was established by the nonlinear regression analysis. A theoretical model of bed height distribution was established and this model fitted the measured value well. The beneficiation performance of this separator was evaluated by separating -3+1 mm Wuhai fine coal. The results showed that the probable error, E, is 0.225, indicating a continuous vibrated gas-fluidized bed separator could achieve a satisfactory performance.INTRODUCTIONFine coal beneficiation in a dry way is considerably imperative for the efficient utilization and conservation of coal resource in drought regions, especially for China. In recent years, the increasing academic interest in the field of fine coal dry beneficiation has been aroused in most of big coal countries. In summary, recent processes of fine coal dry beneficiation are, according to their processing principles, mainly classified into two categories: dense medium beneficiation (Dong et al., 2015; Fan, Chen, Zhao, & Luo, 2001; Luo et al., 2008; Macpherson, Iveson, & Galvin, 2011) and improved pneumatic beneficiation (Patil & Parekh, 2011; Yang, Zhao, Luo, Song, & Chen, 2013; Yang, Zhao, Luo, Song, Duan, et al., 2013; Zhao, Zhao, Chen, & Luo, 2015). The former deploys artificial dense medium, such as magnetite powder and fine sand, to form a stable gas-solid suspension with certain density under the function of the upward fluidizing air flow and in some case, the external force field like vibration and magnetic field. Generally, it is believed that the process of air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) is suitable for separation of coarse coal (-50+6 mm) and can't obtain a satisfactory result for fine coal separation (Luo, Chen, & Zhao, 2002; Luo et al., 2008). However, some recent laboratory efforts (Patil & Parekh, 2011; Zhang et al., 2014) attempt to find an improved performance for fine coal beneficiation in ADMFB with some modifications. The point of these works is to use a comparatively shallow bed and finer magnetite powder with appropriate size distribution. It is known that fluidization of finer magnetite powder is prone to arouse adverse fluidization properties such as channeling and slugging. Thus, the external force is introduced to an ADMFB in order to improve the fluidization quality of a magnetite powder bed. Some recent literature on air dense medium magnetically stabilized fluidized beds (Fan et al., 2001; Luo, Zhao, Chen, Fan, & Tao, 2002; Song, Zhao, Luo, & Tang, 2012), air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (Luo et al., 2008) and Reflux Classifier (Macpherson, Iveson, & Galvin, 2010) reports that the separation efficiency, namely the probably error E value, of dense medium separation of fine coal ranges from 0.066 to 0.07, indicating a good separation performance.
